CHAMBER NEWS

Welcome

Welcome to the Chamber’s magazine ‘South Cheshire Business’. Currently, a huge proportion of debate and discussion focuses on many national issues including BREXIT, new parliament and major infrastructure projects, which is understandable, but we must not let these topics deflect our attention away from the local needs to develop a successful economy and community. Our front cover story is focusing on the £3m renovation of the Market Hall in Crewe. In comparison, the renovation is dwarfed by HS2, the Royal Arcade redevelopment and national issues, but it is a significant development that will begin to lead change in the town centre. As with any successful economy, it isn’t one major project that defines an area, but a combination of small and larger projects developed to work in unison. With this in mind, I encourage public sector bodies not to think that simply developing an integrated HS2 hub for Crewe will in itself be the catalyst to economic success, but rather success will be achieved through a combination of the right housing mix, a vibrant town centre, a strong private sector, injection of inward investment and excellent local education. Which in turn, will strengthen the area’s identity and quality of place. It is clear to the Chamber that Crewe and the surrounding area needs one strategy incorporating the ambitions of multiple local and national public sector bodies, but more importantly incorporating the ambitions of residents and businesses that are located in the area. One clear strategy developed locally will help all stakeholders living and working in the area to understand what is needed and how they can contribute. In pushing for the successful development of Crewe and Nantwich, I’m delighted to introduce the Chamber’s new Chair, Dr. Diane Wright (p.11), who has been a board member for many years and now steps up to lead the growth of the Chamber. Diane will be vital in shaping the Chamber to respond to the needs of the business community and lobby decision makers to create an area that is conducive to building growth and prosperity. The Chamber continues to be busy with plenty of activity supporting the local business community. Since the last magazine, the Chamber continues to attract new members (p.6), provide events to support business (p.10 – Post BREXIT Britain), support international trade (p.14 & 15), and promote the success of local businesses across the Chamber’s many media channels including the magazine. I hope you enjoy this magazine and if your company has good news to share or you’d like to take advantage of the advertising opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact Jon at the Chamber. May I take this opportunity to wish your business every success.

Work begins on £3m market refurbishment scheme

Artist impressions of the Crewe Market Hall refurbishment

Work has begun on a £3m project to transform Crewe Market Hall, with potential traders urged to register their interest in the scheme now. Building work to refurbish and remodel the Grade II listed building got underway at the beginning of June as part of a total £50m programme of investment in Crewe town centre. Opening six days a week, with a new commercial operator, the refurbished Market Hall will be brimming with high-quality, fresh food and independent eateries and retailers, while also featuring pop-up stalls and events. There will be a regular programme of activities and demonstrations and exibility for the building to be opened up during the evening for events, entertainment and other themed activities. With a planned opening date of summer 2020, Cheshire East Council is seeking expressions of interest from potential traders, who are keen to be part of Crewe’s exciting future and want to set up shop in this attractive building. Councillor Nick Mannion, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for environment and regeneration, said: “Crewe is a town that’s very much growing and the refurbishment and

remodelling of Market Hall will play an important role in the town repositioning itself as a prime leisure and retail destination. “We want to hear from traders who believe in our vision for the Market Hall and want to see it, and the town, thrive as much as we do – whether that’s an artisan wanting to retail their products, a sole trader wanting to take the next step, or an established trader looking to expand or relocate to a prime new spot.” The refurbishment will see the Victorian building’s large archways opened up as entrances and fitted with gla ed doors, while external repairs will be made to the brickwork. The interior will undergo a complete redecoration and remodelling, with the existing stalls replaced with units more in keeping with the building’s rich history, alongside the amenities that modern traders require. There will be 22 new permanent stalls, a further 12 regularly-changing pop-up stalls, event space and fully renovated and extended toilet facilities – all complemented by new ooring,

electrics, heating and lighting throughout the building. Potential traders can find out more and register their interest in the scheme by visiting: www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/crewemarkethall and clicking through to the online form. Details submitted via the webform will also be passed to a new markets operator, which will be appointed by the council in the near future. Cllr Mannion said: “We will shortly be beginning our procurement exercise to find a new operator that shares our vision for Crewe’s markets and the role they will play in the town centre’s wider regeneration. “The operator will be in place well in advance of the Market Hall’s grand opening and be responsible for making sure that it – and the rest of Crewe’s markets – becomes a prized asset in the town once more. “They will work with traders to make sure that they play an important role in energising the markets and making the most of the town’s events programme.

CHAMBER NEWS

“It will also be the operator’s role to ensure that the markets are well promoted – drawing in customers and spreading the word about everything that is on offer.” Interested operators are invited to visit: www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/crewemarkethall where they will then be directed to an e-tendering portal – which will soon feature the Crewe markets opportunity. Here they can register and sign up to receive notifications. The Market Hall redevelopment project is part of the Crewe town centre regeneration programme, which is supported by £10m in funding from the Government’s Local Growth Fund through Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership. _

Further updates on the Market Hall scheme will be released by the council as work progresses.

CHAMBER NEWS

Chamber advises on Post Brexit Britain SOUTH Cheshire Chamber of Commerce has reaffirmed its commitment to the area’s prosperity as it works to support businesses concerned about the implications of Brexit. The message from the Chamber is: ‘We are here to help’ after receiving enquiries from local companies, particularly those which trade overseas, on the potential impact an EU divorce will have on their day-to-day operations. Many Crewe and Nantwich businesses took the opportunity to attend the Chamber’s ‘Post Brexit’ seminar which posed the question ‘What next for your business’ with expert speakers drawn from law, banking, accountancy and wealth management. The event, staged at Wychwood Park Hotel, offered business leaders a chance to put their questions to Nick Stamenkovic, NatWest Group Economist, Luke Pritchard, Poole Alcock corporate law specialist, Paul Edwards of Afford Bond accountants and Andrew Watts of Watts Mortgage and Wealth Management. Members were asked to consider practical steps to Brexit-proof their businesses including a review of their supply contracts, employment contracts, commercial leases, data protection, IP and trademarks. While the corporate sector had paired back on investment plans due to uncertainty over Brexit, consumers were still spending and confidence in the North West was riding high,

they were told. Employment growth remained strong but with EU migration at an all-time low, this was impacting those who depend on the labour, in particular the agricultural industry. Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman said: “A key function of the Chamber is to support and provide information for local businesses including those trading internationally and the smooth passage of the many goods and services produced in South Cheshire. “Currently we are helping a wide variety of local exporters prepare for the change at the UK Border following a no deal exit for the EU. “Our support extends to businesses of all sizes which are likely to be impacted in some way and are seeking advice on preparing for the Post Brexit Britain. “We continue to work closely with Cheshire East Council, Cheshire and Warrington LEP and the British Chambers of Commerce to make sure the local business voice is heard. “The Brexit event was staged to inform on the potential implications and opportunities post Brexit Britain may bring and for those who were unable to attend, we are here to offer support.” In his New Year message, Chamber President John Dunning hit out at MPs who have used Brexit for their own political gain and the lack of clarity surrounding the entire split. He was, however, optimistic for the area.

Thank you, Erika The Chamber is committed to nurturing fresh talent through its internship programme. Over the years we have welcomed many students to our headquarters where they have gained hands-on experience of planning events, handling member queries and the day-to-day tasks of being part of a busy office. It was our pleasure to welcome international student Erika, who was studying Business Management at the Manchester Metropolitan University Crewe campus. Erika has now completed her year and this was her message to us.

He said: “With its location, infrastructure and transport links, South Cheshire has all the ingredients to succeed in fulfilling its economic potential. “Also the quality and resilience of our local businesses and great array of skills and young talent, will meet the challenge and take full advantage of the opportunities that arise.” South Cheshire Chamber is an officially designated authority for the issue of EC Certificates of Origin. It provides international trade advice, export documentation certificates and best practice for exports worldwide. _

To the Chamber team, I would like to thank the Chamber team for providing me an opportunity to further increase my personal and professional skills and qualities whilst being on the internship placement. Thank you for giving me the chance to participate in professional development sessions which were very informative and inspiring. Organising and planning events whilst receiving valuable guidance and support, have been instrumental in helping me achieve my professional goals. I have gained valuable skills and experiences which not only helped me with university work but also helped me get closer to the career of my dream. Thank you for being such a great role model for me during my time with the Chamber. As my time here has come to an end, I wanted to let you know I will proudly carry what I have learned here throughout my career. I wanted to write a quick note to let everyone know that I have had a great time working for the Chamber’s team, in part because of their management style, personalities and overall environment in the office. Even though I am moving on, I will take the great memories I have of the office with me wherever I go. Thank you Erika Anskaityte

Marcus Clinton Principal and Chief Executive of Reaseheath College

Tucked away in its own 21 hectares of gardens and grounds and surrounded by farmland, Reaseheath College is one of Nantwich’s hidden gems. Interview with Jan Roberts – Pure PR Solutions

What many people don’t appreciate is that Reaseheath is one of the country’s leading land-based colleges and has a national reputation for the excellence of its specialist technical education. From humble beginnings in 1921 (when there were just six female students learning cheese making), the college has enjoyed phenomenal success and growth, has achieved university status and boasts some of the UK’s best training facilities and resources. Some of the latest building projects, which are part of a recent £80 million investment across campus, include an Advanced Engineering and Agri-Tech Centre, a Sports Science and Performance Academy, an Employer Hub and new halls of residence, bringing the total student accommodation on campus to over 1000. The college also has a commercial farm, a zoo which is open to the public and an equestrian centre which holds regular competitions and events. Over 1,500 students travel in daily from throughout Cheshire and surrounding counties using dedicated college transport.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

“£80 MILLION

investment across campus” Q. Marcus tell us about your role and what you love most about your job as you head towards your first anniversary at the helm of Reaseheath College in August My role is very complex and diverse, re ecting the nature of colleges such as Reaseheath. In effect day to day we are managing a 1,000 bed hotel, transporting nearly 2,000 students into college, delivering an experience to thousands of people of all ages and managing specialist resources such as a farm, zoo and equestrian centre, all of which operate 24/7, 365 days of the year. Alongside that is working with hundreds of staff, employers and organisations that is vital to ensure the college is connected, current, leading and credible. I love this diversity and the nature of the work we do but above all the best bit is seeing the progression that students make and the successful careers and amazing jobs that many take. FE is truly life changing. Q. Can you tell us a little about your background and how you came to be at the helm of this world-class facility? I have always worked in the land based sector, my technical expertise being in equestrian and a variety of jobs in the industry before becoming a college lecturer. I have subsequently worked my way to this role via four colleges around the country and a wealth of experience in specialist FE and HE courses in both delivery and management roles. I was already a Principal but made the move as Reaseheath is one of the top land based colleges in the UK and suits my skills and background – perhaps we were meant to be! Q. The College has recently expanded to include University Centre Reaseheath, offering degrees in land-based sciences. How will this support further growth moving forward? There is an increasing need for higher level skills in the sectors we serve, with strong progression to jobs as a result. Our increased focus and development of the HE experience with the specialist staff and resources will continue to attract students who recognise this environment, expertise and progression opportunities.

Reaseheath has continued to invest in specialist resources and ensuring the offer is at the forefront of the sectors we serve. Alongside this great value has been maintained in the Reaseheath family and community with a thriving student association. Learning and teaching and experiential satisfaction rates remain high with high progression to careers. I think all this is recognised and has attracted high numbers as a result. Q. The College is a bustling centre of academia, but also places emphasis on developing practical and technical skills. How important is this to employers and how do you encourage this? I think there has never been more of a spotlight on and recognition of the importance of practical and technical skills. Employers tell us these skills are vital and place a premium on those with both these skills and the right attitudes and aptitudes for work. There has been increasing reform of these qualifications, alongside more focus on developing those employability skills and preparation for the world of work. As a result there is increasing recognition and parity with more traditional academic routes such as A Levels. Within these equal pathways to work or higher level skills is also apprenticeships and again these have been reformed to ensure they are robust and meet employer needs. All these changes have employers at the heart of their design and for our part we maintain regular communication and have also been strengthening our employer hub at the college to make that even easier. Q. What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to read, theatre, visiting attractions – especially exploring history, campervan adventures and all things coastal/nautical.

Q. Who is your biggest influence/inspiration and why? Apart from my parents who have always imparted a can do, problem solving resilience in me, in would have to be Admiral Nelson who was able to see a better way of caring for his sailors and as a result was able to inspire great achievement, often against the odds. Q. Reaseheath College is a long-standing Patron of the South Cheshire Chamber, how important is it to be part of the business community and tell us about the benefits of forging these connections. It is absolutely vital to be working in partnership with the business community to ensure we are meeting their needs and together delivering the right skills and professional training for prospective and current staff. Together we stand a much higher chance of getting it right and connecting students to work and driving productivity. Q. If you could invite anyone to a dinner party, who would it be and why? My Dad of course, Admiral Nelson for the inspirational story, Michael Macintyre for the humour, Education secretary to be able to lobby for support for specialist, technical education, Chris de Burgh for the music, Douglas Reeman for the books I read growing up and finally ueen Victoria - what the Victorians built and designed is incredible. Q. What is the motto you live and work by? Where there is a will, there is a way.

Q. Some colleges are struggling with their numbers, while Reaseheath, dating back to 1921, continues to thrive with over 5000 students on its books, how is this achieved? TO JOIN TODAY GO TO WWW.SCCCI.CO.UK

Do you know the importance of your travel documents? Passports and Visas are official government documents. Passports provide identity and citizenship, while travel visa grants temporary admission into foreign countries. It can be considered a global identification system, since they are used in just about every country in the world. Passports and visas keep us safe and allow us to see and travel the world for business, pleasure and education. If you sell your products or services overseas then you will need export documentation to ship the goods or export licences or permits to sell your services. If the documentation isn’t correct you risk your products being confiscated, stopped in customs or prevented from selling on. These issues could seriously damage your business reputation and create lost sales and/or contracts. So why create the same type of risks when travelling abroad for business? Ensuring you know what travel documents you require before booking your trip is essential. The South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce is authorised to create and certify Export documentation plus certify visa invitation letters for business and domestic travellers. Many local companies enquire to the Chamber about visa services, of which an invitation letter is only a small part of the process. Did you know that right

on our door step we have such expertise? The Chamber is proud to work with the team at The Travel Visa Company on a regular basis. Directors, Karen Taylor and Ray Ward have a very friendly knowledgeable team whose door is always open. TTVC based in the Quadrangle in

the grounds of Crewe Hall providing businesses and the general public with a central and easyaccess visa application centre. Karen said “We remain members of the Chamber of Commerce as they have always supported our business and we interact with many of the members on a regular basis”. I was amazed when I was informed by Philip Ashwell, Head of Sales, of the number of different types of visa just for the USA alone. No wonder people get it wrong when trying to apply for one themselves. TTVC process visa’s for travellers going to 91 countries. China being a major market

As I am often reminding our exporters when shipping their goods overseas, remember to factor in the cost of the export documentation with the order. The costs can affect your bottom line. The same should always be done when travelling for business when a visa is required. _

The world is a big place! You know you have a product or service which is exportable but how do you go about finding the right market? Everyone will tell you to do your research so here are our top tips on the research you need to do to find the right export market. It is important to plan your export market research so that you have the information you need to make decisions about: • which markets to enter and when • the best routes into a market • how to position your product or service in your chosen markets Market data should shape your plans. It could show you that a country you were planning to move into has too much competition or falling demand. Selling to a new market without the right information could cost you time and money. In extreme cases it could put your business at risk so it is important to ensure that you get it right! Decide what you need to know and plan your research to keep it focused. Start by asking: • what is the market potential? • what are the barriers to entry? • who are my competitors? • who are my customers? • what are the best routes to market? Research the market risks. You need to be aware of potential risks to your business when exporting. You can get assistance from third party legal teams or risk analysts. Risks include failing to comply with laws, regulations and customs that apply in the country to which you’re exporting. Define the potential of a market. Make sure you research the market size and its attractiveness in detail, Look for: • the size and age of the population • the country’s GDP and average disposable income • the amount and value of similar products or services • imports of similar products or services • the number of online searches for your products or services In country National Statistics Offices, the World Trade Organisation, the CIA world factbook and the World bank are some of the excellent sources of information giving you access to country briefs and statistics, regional forecast and economic research and statistics.

Online resources for market attractiveness include country guides which give an overview of economic and industry information, legal and intellectual property issues and language and cultural barriers. Overseas business risk reports can also be used to find out about political instability, terrorism, crime, corruption, human rights issues and intellectual property risks. The EU Market Access Database is also an excellent resource for trade tariffs, statistics and barriers. Always analyse the competition! Competitor analysis will help you understand the amount of competition you will face in the prospective export market and help you decide how to position your product or service. Try and find out: • • • •

their market share the price of their products or services how they market their products or services why consumers buy their products or services over others

In country Chamber of Commerce, trade associations and magazines and trade exhibition web sites are all good sources of information for this. Once you have done all of the above your next step is to compare markets to pick the right one. Gather the same information for each country and create a market weighting table. This should make it easy to get a comparative score for size and attractiveness making it clear where the potential demand is and which markets will be easier to enter. After that, you can then conduct field research out in your chosen export market. Having selected a country based on desk research, you’ll need specific information about the country and your product or service. Focus on what the competition is doing, your customer’s behaviours, motivations and preferences and the best ways to bring your product or service to market. Be prepared to spend more time and money on this stage of research. It can include both desk and field research. Sara Says “Whilst the idea of travelling and researching in the field can be more interesting, exciting and less onerous than desk based research, it is really important to do the basic ground work from home before you go. Field research can be costly so consider the most

cost effective, efficient and productive ways of doing this and what works best for you and your business” Think about attending exhibitions or events as a visitor first as this is an excellent way to clarify your research, network and make contacts, meet potential customers and future partners and assess demand for your product or service. Sara continues “There are many online resources to help you with all of the above but your first point of call should be getting help from your local International Trade Adviser from the Department for International Trade (DIT). Here at DIT we can support you through the above process and answer any questions along the way. Via our OMIS service, we can even put you in touch with our colleagues overseas to help you to conduct more in depth research, find new business contacts and partners.” The Overseas Market Information Service (OMIS) is a chargeable service offered by DIT through its network of staff in overseas embassies and Consulates. OMIS offers bespoke market research, sector advice, market entry strategies, identification of business partners as well as support during overseas visits. _

Could you be an enterprise adviser? Cheshire East Council’s Skills and Growth Company is looking to recruit more ‘enterprise advisers’ to help schools and colleges inspire young people and prepare them for the world of work. Enterprise advisers are volunteers with business experience, who are passionate about helping young people make informed career choices. Using their business experience and networks, they help schools and colleges develop and implement an effective careers strategy to maximise opportunities with local employers. The enterprise adviser network across Cheshire East is delivered in partnership with the Careers and Enterprise Company – an established and successful initiative made up of advisers from all types of businesses, the public

sector and self-employed. These advisers help young people understand more about the skills local businesses are looking for and the range of job and apprenticeship opportunities available. Ian Cottrill, business relations director at Franklyn Financial Management, in Congleton, has been an enterprise adviser since February 2018 and is passionate about helping schools and colleges learn more about a career in financial services. He said: “I have found being an enterprise adviser very rewarding and inspiring. Running events, such as our stock market challenge for schools, helped students understand more about how stocks and investments underpin our global economy and how they can find a rewarding career in finance.

“I would urge anyone with business experience to join the network and raise the profile of their sector with our future workforce.” Julian Cobley, managing director of the council’s arms-length Skills and Growth Company, said: “We are immensely grateful for the time and effort our volunteer enterprise advisers commit to their roles on behalf of our schools and colleges. If anyone would like to join the network please get in touch and help us develop a stronger partnership between education and business.” _

Marketing Tips

Advertising on social media is huge right now. You can target your audience according to demographics and interests, and can target very narrowly, for example skin creams to “eczema support groups”. It is a very cost-effective form of marketing.

3

Pay Per Click on Yahoo and Bing

4

Google My Places

Try Pay Per Click on smaller search engines such as Bing or Yahoo. It is less competitive so much cheaper than Google to get your adverts shown. The cost per click is about 25% of the cost of Google.

Make sure you set up Google My Places, which basically is a free business listing on Google. This also ensures you are shown on Google Maps too.

5

Test your website on mobile – its more important than desktop

6

CRM

7

Online Customer Reviews

8

Think about traditional marketing like Direct Mail.

A large percentage of your website visitors will be from mobile devices – between 50% and 80% - so your website needs to be fully device responsive (mobile/tablet/laptop/PC) and as good on a mobile as it is on a desktop.

Building a simple CRM and email database is vital for cost effective communications to customers and prospects. Keep it up to date.

If you’re not doing online customer reviews, give it huge consideration. Search engines love to show independent customer feedback and are likely to give you more prominence than others if you have happy customers. Simply ask your customers to review you face-to-face or by email.

Its rare to get a letter nowadays in this digital world. That means that people open letters and read them! Direct Mail is so much less competitive nowadays, so your message is so much more likely to be seen.

Award honour for Dot and Gill SG World, Health & Safety documentation and software specialists, celebrated the latest winners of their Employee of the Year scheme in April. Dot Munro and Gill Meadows, Head Office Receptionists, won after originally being voted as Employees of the Month back in December 2018. Dot and Gill won Employee of the Year after receiving a large number of nominations. What makes them so special is the consistently warm, professional and efficient welcome that they provide to callers and visitors into reception – no matter what kind of day they may be having. Despite what may be going on behind the scenes, SG World’s lovely receptionists greet everyone who calls or walks through their doors with the brightest smiles and warmest of welcomes – not to mention an impeccable service. And it’s not because they have to, it’s because they want to. Not only that, but many staff will agree that they’re not only Receptionists, but confidantes and friends to those who work at SG World. They are appreciated not just as colleagues but like family members to many of the team. Gill, who has been with SG World since November 2018, was surprised but delighted to hear that they had won. She said: “I was absolutely gob-smacked! I was surprised to win Employee of the Month back in December but winning Employee of the Year was an even bigger

shock. It’s lovely because I’ve not worked for SG World for very long, so it’s the icing on the cake to the job that I love.” Dot, who has worked for SG World for 13 years, was equally delighted. She said: “I was completely shocked because all the other nominees are brilliant. I genuinely didn’t expect it! It was an honour to have won.”

Mark Haase, SG World CEO, said: “In our organisation, working towards our values and demonstrating capability in the role to the best of our abilities, are measures of our people’s skills, talents and work ethic. Dot and Gill are brilliant examples of this, and it’s no surprise that they were voted as Employee of the Year.”

Business loans that are leagues ahead As another football season comes to a close, we can only marvel at the way some clubs have now become major businesses and indeed significant employers.

I was startled to see Manchester City parade, what must have been around 30 backroom staff who work with the players on a daily basis, at the Premier League Trophy presentation after the Brighton game. This is modern day football. Manchester United gross revenue for the coming year ending 30 June 2019 is expected to top £600M, just about 150 times that of Crewe Alex. They earn £79.4M for just being in the Premier League, around £30M for where they finish which in annual appraisal terms would rank as ‘very disappointing’) and £31M for TV appearances (which on occasions proved mildly more interesting than a Commons Brexit Debate). On the other side of the coin we have Bolton Wanderers going into Administration and setting up a Food Bank for their staff who went unpaid for some time. We now enter the unseemly annual scrap for additional players where those clubs who have players that have performed well in 2018/19 for lower ranking teams across the World, will be the subject of insane bidding, disproportionate agents’ fees, staggering wages and signing on fees. For the rest of us, we continue to operate in the real World driven by the philosophy of Wilkins Micawber – ‘Annual income twenty

pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six pence – result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds and six pence – result misery.’ If only life was still that simple. On the basis that the Chancellor will not be sending you a large cheque for simply being where you are, you competitors will not give you a one off payment for being better than them, you fail to achieve any television income from y on the wall documentaries and you achieve zero sales of your branded polo tops on Crewe Market, then be prepared for another year of hard slog.

South Cheshire Development Agency will not sponsor your vehicles, will not endorse your product (Head and Shoulders shampoo and Nivea Body Lotions would be lost on me), neither will we undertake the opening ceremony for your new photocopier. We will however look at any proposal which might help sustain or even grow your business where funding is required. We might not be able to match the Premier League financial numbers but if you are more at home with the financial levels of the Evo-Stick Northern Premier League then give us a call.

Back in early 2015 Joanne Brown approached the Chamber with a proposal to set up a day nursery within the Total Fitness site on Macon Way, Crewe. The Chamber Loan Fund provided part funding and working alongside her sister Donna the business has since gone from strength to strength with an Outstanding Ofsted rating. The efforts of Joanne and Donna plus their loyal staff were duly recognised in November 2016 when they won the South Cheshire Chamber Start-Up Business of the Year Award. The business continued to progress but Joanne and Donna were not looking to stand still. Recognising the vagaries of British weather, they looked to improve the outside facilities within the nursery and are now looking at a further capital expenditure programme to provide child-friendly surfaces and additional equipment coupled with a roofed area keeping everyone dry whilst still benefitting from outdoor activities. Again the Chamber is supporting through the South Cheshire Development Agency Limited. Joanne said: “Whilst we have always been able to provide a degree of finance to our projects, the Chamber and latterly the Development Agency have provided essential top up funding which has enabled us to see take our projects to the next level and enhance our offering.” Richard Weilding from the Development Agency commented: “We have always been impressed with the enthusiasm and business skills of Joanne and Donna and their latest proposal re ects their ongoing abilities to look

at the wider picture and prepare for the future. Their recognition via Ofsted is a testament to the excellent service they provide at the nursery each day.”

Business support to transform Crewe’s Flag Lane Baths Local residents and businesses have a unique opportunity to transform the locally listed building into a vibrant destination. Community Project plans are in place to create a 21st century social venue for the people of Crewe, preserving the heritage of the building and keeping alive the memories of many generations of Crewe residents. But first, take a look at what happened on 6th November 1937 – an occasion of great civic pride as the official opening of Crewe’s new Swimming Baths took place. In planning the building, the council was visionary, demonstrating great innovation, enthusiasm and commitment to the local townspeople. They were highly commended, living up to their motto of ‘Never Behind” – providing forward thinking and revolutionary solutions to meet their community needs. Fast Forward to the current day and the much-loved Art Deco Flag Lane Baths sits in an empty and depressing state, victim to continuing vandalism and deterioration. “The residents of Crewe are extremely saddened by the demise of this building; they strongly articulate their

dismay and are asking for it to once again become a place of benefit to the community” said local Pastor Rev. David Edwards from Crewe’s The Lighthouse Centre. Through the vision of David and the enthusiasm of a great team of volunteers, a newly formed charity ‘Always Ahead’ is launching a £3.5m capital campaign to transform the locally listed building. David explains: “Working with local residents and businesses, we can create a future for Flag Lane Baths as a dynamic

community hub for those who visit and live in Crewe. The building will be used as an all yearround facility; open every day of the week and used for different purposes including activities for youth, dedicated space and services to the homeless, extended facilities to the local community, groups and town wide activities”.

Andy Morris, CEO of Assurant Europe and Chair of the Flag Lane Baths Campaign Committee says: “As one of the main employers in Crewe, it’s rewarding to work directly and volunteer with a group that works so hard for our local community. We know that residents and visitors have placed Flag Lane Baths firmly in their hearts, appreciating the legacy that many generations have experienced. Together with residents, Cheshire East and Crewe Town Councils, we want to see this legacy maintained and are supporting this vital project. By working together as local businesses, we can protect the community we all work in”. David and the team are reaching out to other local and regional businesses to support this project. This could be either financially or offering employees’ business skills, time and resources or even making introductions to other businesses and community leaders.. _

A green area targeted by anti-social behaviour is to be transformed to its former glory as a haven for walking and enjoying leisure time. Crewe Town Council and Cheshire East Council have unveiled plans to breathe life into Valley Park off Alton Street installing new pathways, cycle routes, signage, play and exercise equipment. The aim is to make the space safe and attractive to local people of all ages and encourage walking, cycling and play. The scheme forms part of a wider campaign to encourage civic pride in Crewe and brand the town as a good place to live, work, invest and enjoy recreational activities. The town council’s bid for funding resulted in a £62,000 allocation from Cheshire East Council’s New Homes Bonus fund, for the Valley Park project. They also received a further £92,000 generated via fixed penalty notices, to be used towards tackling issues of y-tipping, littering and mismanagement of waste. Now local businesses are invited to get involved by offering volunteer time as a team

building activity in Valley Park or by donating materials. Meanwhile two new Street Scene Improvement Officers are on the beat - knocking on doors and dealing directly with residents and landlords to educate and find solutions. Town Council clerk Steve McQuade said: “Crewe Town Council is working in partnership with Cheshire East Council and has employed two Street Scene Improvement Officers to work in hot spot areas, getting to understand the causes of issues. “Meanwhile alley Park will benefit from new play equipment, new footpaths and signage, and we are working in partnership with Ansa, who manage the park, to look for additional funds for a longer- term programme of improvements. “The project would help users to take back the park and under-pin activity to reduce antisocial behaviour. It’s hoped the investment will benefit many people living in the area, providing an attractive space for recreation and leisure, and a pleasant route for walkers and cyclists to access other parts of the town.”

Frank Jordan, Cheshire East Council executive director of place, said: “We are pleased to be able to facilitate this project and to be working in partnership with Crewe Town Council and the wider community, to breathe new life into Valley Park. We look forward to seeing the work getting underway and to people being able to enjoy the new facilities.” The programme will complement other community activities such as clean- ups over the past few years and Love Crewe’s work on creating a community garden in the orchard. The town council is also celebrating a £10,000 Awards for All grant for Crewe trAction – July 6th’s celebration of transport, science, art and engineering. The money will boost local participation with workshops where townspeople can create artwork and designs for a community parade. _

Mortgage company doubles in size South Cheshire Chamber member My Simple Mortgage has secured investment that will support ambitious plans for expansion in 2019. In a little over a year the size of the team has doubled, with three mortgage and protection advisers - James, Zoe, and Steve - now helping customers from first-time buyers to buy to let landlords. Founded in 2014 by James Adams, who was joined by co-director Mark Savill in 2016, the company takes a genuinely personal approach. Whether a client is buying their first home, remortgaging, investing in a rental property or needs a commercial mortgage, they aim to make the process as straightforward as possible, especially for busy local business leaders and owners who are stretched for time. At the moment, the gap between the average maturing two-year fixed rate mortgage and lenders’ standard variable rates (SVR) is the widest it has been in 11 years. Yet figures from the FCA suggest 2 million homeowners across the country stay on their lender’s standard variable rate S R when a fixed, tracker or discount mortgage deal ends. The firm has launched Mortgage Health Check, a free whole-of-market advice service to assess whether a remortgage is right for your personal situation. James said: “Many business owners and self-employed people in particular think that if their circumstances have changed or their income

Working directly with students aged 11-13 and teachers at our week-long Space Camp residential where everyone had the opportunity to take part in hands-on activities with ‘Space’ experts was amazing.” The judges commented: “Encouraging the next generation into manufacturing is a key challenge facing the industry, and it is schemes like this that make the difference. Lynn is encouraging people into the industry who would never have considered it before.” _

Double awards joy for special needs charity Supported Community Business (Special Needs) Ltd has carried off accolades from Aviva Insurance and Crewe Town Council in recognition of its work supporting those with learning difficulties in the community. Following the hosting of a ‘Final Friday’ event at their workshop premises, based on Crewe Gates Industrial Estate, RK Henshall Chartered Insurance Brokers nominated SCB in the Health & Wellbeing category of the 2018/19 Aviva Community Broker Awards. Following several months of canvassing and gaining public votes, a short list of projects were then judged by a select panel to become finalists. This year’s awards ceremony was held at The Monastery on Gorton Lane in Manchester, hosted by Rugby’s World Cup winning star Will Greenwood. A representative from both RK Henshall and SCB travelled to Manchester to attend the event, alongside other finalists from across Britain in the various categories. In addition to the ‘Winners Plaque’ SCB were awarded £5,000 towards the cost of installing a new warm air blower. Mark Read of RK Henshall Insurance Brokers said: “Workshop Director Colin Mills’ passion and that of his team is clear for everyone to see. Giving people the opportunity to experience the world of work is amazing and their sense of achievement is fantastic to witness. Being

awarded this by Aviva will make such a difference to the day to day running of Support Community Business and we are proud to be associated with such a worthy cause and very grateful to everyone that took time out to place their votes for this project.” Colin Mills, Supported Community Business, added: “All associated with the workshop would like to extend heartfelt thanks to RK Henshall for their nomination and support throughout the whole process. We sincerely hope this will be just the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership. We would also like to extend our genuine gratitude to Aviva for this award and their support of local community projects.” SCB went on to receive the ‘Crewe Business Award’ from outgoing Crewe Mayor, Cllr Brian

Roberts, as part of the Crewe Town Council Civic Awards. The award honoured ‘an individual or organisation who has demonstrated initiative and enterprise in business in the Town of Crewe.’ Supported Community Business (Special Needs) Ltd is a registered charity offering a unique opportunity to support ambition in special needs individuals and enable them to fulfil their potential by providing a therapeutic workshop facility where they can experience real work tasks in a controlled supportive environment. _

Clean team bag cash with help from Sandbach company Sandbach Clean Team have swept up £1000 thanks to the help of Mat White Financial Services on the town’s Middlewich Road. The company, run by husband and white Mat and Adele White, supported the volunteer organisation by applying to Aviva’s charity fund and were successful in achieving the hand-out towards the team’s good work in the community.

Mat said: “With the current concerns about waste, in particular plastic, it is very important to involve the young people of the town in order to encourage and secure future members for the Clean Team. Its organiser Keith Haines has already been most productive with the grant money and has been in touch with local primary schools to offer litter picking packs.

“A thousand pounds may not seem like a lot of money these days but it certainly is to the Sandbach Clean Team.” _

Stoke-on-Trent based design and web agency, Lawrence Davis, is proud to be working alongside The Donna Louise, to design and print all of the marketing items required for their prestigious Donna Louise Annual Ball, to be held at The China Halls, Spode, Stoke-on-Trent on Friday, 12th July 2019. The Lawrence Davis team were tasked with creating innovative and eye catching marketing concepts, based around the beautiful theme of Butter ies, to signify beauty and fragile life along with the strapline of Together we can y’. Senior designer, Sarah Price, stepped up to the mark designing an intricate origami style invitation in the shape of a Butter y, which will be used to dress a Butter y Wall’ that will be showcased during the event. The Donna Louise provides hospice care for children, young people and their families, across Staffordshire and Cheshire. Care is provided at their purpose-built hospice, in the family home, or a combination of both. This would not be possible without the support and generosity of the local community, who help raise the £4.5 million needed to run the service each year. Last year was the 10th Annual ball and the amazing supporters raised an incredible £78,000. Such a fantastic amount could help to fund services such as, 200 family support sessions, 120 home care support sessions, 40 respite stays and 20 counselling sessions….what a fantastic achievement.

“Last year was the 10th Annual ball and the amazing supporters raised an incredible £78,000.”

Of course this year The Donna Louise are hoping to increase the amount of money raised and together with Lawrence Davis’s amazing creative skill, this they are hoping to achieve. The Donna Louise supported by Lawrence Davis together we can y.

Together we can fly

Unique butterfly artwork will support hospice Chamber members The Donna Louise young people’s hospice has unveiled a stunning art installation at Trentham Gardens. ‘Taking Flight’ is a unique collaboration with many companies coming together to work for the good of a much-needed service - The Donna Louise at Trentham. On show in the Italian Gardens area to November 3, the installation is made up of 5,000 hand-made ceramic and metal butter ies – every one made in Stoke-on-Trent. The butter ies were inspired by Charlotte Thom, a former service user of The Donna Louise. The butter y designs are echoes of paintings by Charlotte, who spent time at the hospice and was a keen artist, completing an A-level in the subject before her death last year, aged 20.

Hospice Chief Executive, Simon Fuller, said “Charlotte was a familiar face at The Donna Louise from the age of seven. Her artwork was an inspiration and despite her life limiting illness, she developed into a fantastic ambassador for our hospice.”
