Welcome
Welcome to the Chamber’s magazine ‘South Cheshire Business’. There was only one story that could be on our front cover for this edition, Bentley’s centenary celebration and the recently launched Bentley EXP 100 GT concept car (p. 6-9). Congratulations to our Chamber patron company that has been synonymous with Crewe and has helped put the area on the international map. The EXP 100 GT is Bentley’s vision of the future and their idea of making every journey extraordinary, through leading edge innovation and design. The value of Bentley to the area is unfathomable, with a workforce of over 4,000 and a substantial supply chain in the region, they have been critical to the success of South Cheshire economy. It should also be said that Crewe has been an important part of their success too, providing the skilled workforce to produce the most luxurious cars in the world.

Like Bentley, many businesses have chosen to locate in Crewe and the surrounding region, due to access to an excellent workforce, development land, and of course, transport connectivity. As you will have seen the government has asked for a review of HS2, a major infrastructure project that will increase Crewe’s desirability with businesses ten-fold. The Chamber is disappointed that a review is being conducted, but it is an opportunity to re-inforce the importance of bringing HS2 to this area. The Chamber has submitted a response to Douglas Oakervee, who will chair the independent review.

OF BENTLEY the story so far
As Bentley celebrates its centenary year, we look back on the company’s long-standing association with Crewe which began in 1938 when the first building block was placed on Pyms Lane, marking the beginning of Bentley’s famous factory.
Originally constructed to manufacture the Merlin engines which powered Spitfire and Hurricane fighters, the factory is now home to more than 4,000 Bentley employees who helped manufacture over 10,000 Bentley cars last year, for the company’s discerning customers all over the world. Many great achievements have been made, and are still being made at Bentley’s factory in Crewe, from its original construction to producing cars for nearly 80 years that sit at the pinnacle of luxury automotive manufacturing. Many people have visited Bentley in Crewe, including Royal families, Prime Ministers, celebrities and thousands of customers each year, fascinated by what they see. And Bentley always tries to give something back, working with

“Bentley is synonymous with Crewe, and Crewe is synonymous with Bentley and Bentley is very proud of that” many local charities supporting them with what they need. Bentley has donated over £500,000 to charity over the past ten years and will continue to support as much as possible.
Bentley is synonymous with Crewe, and Crewe is synonymous with Bentley and Bentley is very proud of that. The company’s commitment to the local area has never stopped and it is very thankful for the level of support received right up until the present day. The vast majority of Bentley colleagues come from the local area and the company has built up over 80 years of expertise, a lot of which is in very traditional skills. You wouldn’t get that anywhere else but Crewe. As Bentley embarks on a new journey, the support and network from the community and workforce stand stronger than ever. Bentley is proud to call its home Crewe, and will continue to do so as it enters a new chapter in its history.
CHAMBER NEWS
1888 - W.O. Bentley The story begins with Walter Owen (W.O.) Bentley, the son of a wealthy family living in London. Born in 1888, W.O. Bentley developed a fascination for steam engines and spent five years learning about locomotive engineering at the Great Northern Railway in Doncaster.
1919 - Bentley Motors
1919 - Bentley EXP 2
Bentley Motors was founded on 10 July 1919, underpinned by W.O. Bentley’s philosophy that “we were going to make a fast car, a good car, the best in its class”. EXP 1 (Experimental No.1) was the first car to bear the Bentley name, with a 3.0-litre four-cylinder engine that put it years ahead of rival vehicles.
EXP 2 was built in time for the Olympia Motor Show in November 1919, with a long list of clients eager to place hefty deposits. Deep pockets were required: a Bentley chassis cost the equivalent of three houses. Autocar said: “For the man who wants a true sporting type of light-bodied car for use on a Continental tour, the three-litre Bentley is undoubtedly the car par excellence.”
1921 - Bentley 3 Litre
1922 - Success at Le Mans
The first 3 Litre was handed over to its buyer in 1921, by which time the price had jumped from £750 to £1,100. Meanwhile, EXP 2 won its debut race at Brooklands in 1921, with the production 3 Litre models adding a string of victories to Bentley’s name.
Bentley returned to Le Mans with the full backing of the factory, with Captain John Duff and Frank Clement romping home to victory in a Bentley 3 Litre. Le Mans was instrumental in the early success of Bentley, with the victories generating a huge amount of exposure for the brand.
Bentley Boys
1930 - The Blue Train Barnato was a dinner party on a yacht near Cannes when he bet £200 that his Bentley Speed Six could beat the Blue Train from Cannes to Calais. Not only did Barnato beat the Blue Train to Calais, he even managed to reach the Conservative Club in London before the train arrived in the French port.
Having survived the Great War, these rich men were determined to live life to the full and had the feeling of invincibility. Notable Bentley Boys included Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin and Woolf Barnato who were instrumental in shaping the direction of the company.

Bentley Blower Arguably the most famous Bentley of all time, it’s ironic that the ‘Blower’ was the least successful Cricklewood car in competition. The Blower was quick, but horrendously thirsty and unreliable, serving to hasten the decline of the company. That said, it helped to put Bentley on the map, despite never winning a serious race.
1930 - The end of the W.O. era This was to be a dark era in the history of Bentley, with the company teetering on the brink of insolvency in 1930 and W.O. nearly sacked in September of that year. Everything pointed to a takeover by Napier, but the bosses at Rolls-Royce knew that this would represent a serious threat to their business.
Rolls-Royce takeover Bentley received a bid of £125,275 from the British Central Equitable Trust on behalf of Rolls-Royce, leaving W.O. shocked and the company’s future hanging in the balance. The Cricklewood factory was closed, production ceased and the Bentley brand effectively disappeared for two years.
1938 - The Silent Sports Car In stark contrast to the stern and formal feel of Rolls-Royce, Bentley had a colourful and sporty image. But the 1930s and 1940s were dark years for Bentley. In 1938, the Glass’s guide failed to list prices for Bentleys because the cost of repairs far outweighed the value of its cars.
1953 - Bentley R-Type Continental The Mark VI was the first Crewe Bentley and the first to be delivered with a body, but the R-Type Continental was one of the most desirable cars of the 1950s. It could hit 100mph in third gear before reaching a top speed of 120mph. At the time, it was the fastest four-seater car in the world.
1980 - Vickers and a new era In 1980, British defence company Vickers bought Rolls-Royce, signalling the start of a new chapter for Bentley. Against all the odds, Bentley rose again, with Rolls-Royce realising that the brand’s sporting heritage could be used to great effect.
8
BUSINESS NEWS QUARTER 3 2019
1991 - A new identity The positive vibes continued into the 1990s, with the Continental R of 1991 the first Bentley that didn’t look like a Rolls-Royce since 1965, the rebodied Turbo R commanded a two-year waiting list, the four-door Brooklands with a host of new products and the Pininfarina-designed Azure, the most powerful four-seat convertible in the world.
CHAMBER NEWS
1998 - Volkswagen and another new era In 1998, Volkswagen believed it had purchased Rolls-Royce and Bentley from Vickers. But it transpired that Vickers did not own the rights to the Rolls-Royce name, which was subsequently bought by BMW. The German giant immediately invested £1 billion to upgrade the Crewe factory.
2003 - Bentley State Limousine The Bentley Arnage of 1998 was the first new car since 1980 but it shared much in common with the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph. The Arnage was used as the basis for the Bentley State Limousine, commissioned through Mulliner to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.
2003 - Bentley Continental GT The Continental GT of 2003 was the first all-new Bentley since the Volkswagen takeover in 1998. It caused a huge stir when it was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show 2002, so much so that Bentley was inundated with orders ahead of its launch in March 2003.
2003 - Return to Le Mans
2009 - Bentley Mulsanne
In 2003, Bentley made a successful return to Le Mans when Tom Kristensen, Guy Smith and Rinaldo Capello drove the EXP Speed 8 to victory in the famous race. Two laps behind was the sister car driven by Mark Blundell, David Brabham and Johnny Herbert.
Bentley resurrected the Mulsanne for the replacement of the Arnage, unveiling its new luxury flagship at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. As the first bespoke big Bentley since the 8 Litre of 1930, it was a landmark car for the brand.
2015 - Bentley Bentayga 2019 - Bentley EXP 100 GT In Bentley’s centenary year, the company unveiled its vision of the future of luxury mobility at The Home of Bentley in Crewe. The Bentley EXP 100 GT is a physical embodiment of the future Bentley brand, reimagining Grand Touring for the future. Beyond mere mobility, the Bentley EXP 100 GT concept car will enhance the owner’s Grand Touring experience, whether driving or being driven autonomously.
If the Mulsanne felt like a nod to the brand’s history, the Bentayga felt like a break from tradition, being Bentayga Bentley’s first SUV. A Bentayga Hybrid has joined the range, with Bentley aiming to offer an electrified version of every car in its range by 2023.

THE PRESIDENT’S PAGE
President’s Message from the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce As I write this article it seems that a satisfactory outcome to Brexit is still some way off and as the uncertainties and difficulties for business continue to grow our politicians annoyingly seem to be more concerned about political posturing rather than working together to find practical solutions that will increase business confidence going forward. It really is frustrating and it is fair to be highly critical of MPs on all sides
Equally disappointing is the Governments decision to carry out a review of HS2 which is, of course, highly significant for Crewe. South Cheshire is already beginning to see the benefit of investment arising from the potential of HS2 and members can be assured that the Chamber will be working alongside the Local Authorities and other partners to continue to lobby for the project to go ahead as planned.
On the subject of HS2, the Chamber’s Business Council recently received a presentation from Cheshire East Council as part of the formal consultation process on the Crewe Station Hub Area Action Plan. Whilst the Business Council was generally supportive of the long term proposals it felt that more short term action needs to be taken to give immediate impetus to the massive potential that Crewe has, irrespective of the spinoff from HS2 and also stressed the importance of ensuring linkages with other parts of the town. The Business Council will be continuing to press this view with the Council. I am delighted to welcome AO as our latest Chamber Patron. The Chamber was able to help AO in their decision to locate to Crewe as Expert Logistics and since then they have expanded to become one of the areas flagship companies and as well as being a major employer they also do a tremendous amount of work in supporting the community. At the other end of the scale, I was saddened to see the recent demise of local construction company Pochins. Having worked closely with Pochins over the years I must say that they were a highly pro-active company and were responsible for instigating many of the developments that helped to kick-start the growth of our local economy.

John Dunning, Chamber President
It was disappointing that the Nantwich Show had to be cancelled this year and along with it our own Pre –Show Business Reception. A lot of hard work goes into staging these events but I am sure that the the organisers made the right decision. Nevertheless, it was good that the International Cheese Show was able to go ahead which was remarkably well attended under the circumstances and I was privileged to represent the Chamber at the Presidents Lunch. The impressive array of major events that take place in South Cheshire continues to rumble on. I was fortunate enough to represent the Chamber at the opening ceremony of the Nantwich Food Festival. Then there is our own Business Awards in November which is always a spectacular event and one which I am again looking forward to. Finally, on a personal note, the new football season is underway and Nantwich Town of which I am a Director, have made an impressive start. Let’s hope it continues and good luck too to Crewe Alex who have also started well.
John Dunning President South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry
South Cheshire Chamber goes from strength to strength with increased membership and an enviable reputation as one of the leading business organisations of its kind in the UK. That was the message to members attending the Chamber’s AGM where Chief Executive Paul Colman reflected on a busy year of lobbying to drive forward growth. Amid a Government review of HS2, he reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to pushing for Crewe’s future as a high speed rail hub supported by large local employers on its Business Council and key stakeholders from the public and private sector. The Business Council has actively engaged with Cheshire East Council and the Skills and Growth Company (now subsumed into the council) on Crewe’s masterplan and voiced the concern of businesses over issues such as infrastructure and parking. On a national level, as a member of the British Chambers of Commerce, the Chamber has spoken out on Brexit uncertainty, business rates and mobile connectivity. He said: “Representation will remain be a key activity for the Chamber on behalf of the members and we need to make sure the views of business are heard specially when we are looking to realise the potential Crewe, certainly through the HS2 and Master Planning agenda, and our work through the Chamber Business Council and constant engagement with public and private sector.” On a local level, working with Crewe Pledge, the Chamber has supported initiatives to make young people ‘work ready’ and match them with
employers. It has welcomed European funding which has been received to establish nine other Pledges led by the Cheshire & Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership. He added: “We’re proud to have been at the heart of establishing an initiative that helps young people in the area become work ready and provides opportunities for them to learn about new careers and opportunities.” The Chamber’s lending arm, the South Cheshire Development Agency, continues to provide a launch-pad for start-ups. Members heard that loans over the year had amounted to £119,500 helping to create five new business and 16 new jobs. Globally, the Chamber continues to fly the flag for South Cheshire products and services through its international trade activities. Throughout 2018-19 the number of export documents South Cheshire Chamber processed was just over 1400 with an increase in value of over £300million. There are 68 exporters that the Chamber assists with documentation and International Trade Advice. The industry sectors range from motor vehicle, clothing and scientific products to education, engineering, food products and farming equipment to name a few. Meanwhile, with almost 400 members, South Cheshire Chamber continues to ride high as the Chamber with the seventh highest penetration rate out of the 53 Accredited Chambers in the country. Gary Greer of Afford Bond presented a healthy balance sheet which included revenue from 61 Chamber events attending by some 1600 people. Over the year the Chamber has remained accredited with Investors in People and ISO9001 Quality Standard. British Chambers of Commerce Accreditation will see it continue to lobby for South Cheshire on a national level. _

South Cheshire - ‘a geopolitical asset’ ‘To be a Chamber that is integral to the success of the local business community and is influential in promoting the future prosperity of the area.’ Chamber Chair Diane Wright reaffirmed these aims as she addressed her first AGM since taking over the role at the start of the year. Speaking of the dismay felt locally over HS2 and Brexit, she said: “We have spent three years, and longer in the case of HS2, being buffeted by things we have no direct control over. Because we have businesses to run and we can’t put everything on hold, we need to influence wherever we can and take control over those areas where we can create impact. “For individual businesses, that may seem difficult, but as a Chamber representing almost 400 businesses, we make that voice stronger. We know that the area of Crewe and Nantwich is important both politically and geographically, and as a Chamber we see a big part of our role as that of promoting, lobbying and influencing on
members’ behalf so that this area is recognised as a geopolitical asset.” Representation, providing information and facilitating a community where businesses speak as one, powerful voice remain the foundations on which the Chamber is built. “As a Chamber, we are in a strong position – we have a good penetration level, we offer a huge range of very successful activities and we are financially sound.” A Chamber Board member for over 10 years, Diane’s involvement came about in her former role as Associate Dean for External Engagement at Manchester Metropolitan University. She added: “We can’t make HS2 happen, but along with the Business Council (made up of the most powerful businesses in the area) we will continue to press for the implementation of regeneration plans regardless of whether high speed rail goes ahead or not.”

Crewe YMCA was the venue for the Chamber AGM. Members were introduced to the bright and airy facilities on Gresty Road and heard about its work in the community since 1982. Tackling homelessness: the YMCA provides accommodation projects preparing people to live independently. One is for single people on Gresty Road and the other for parents and children in Crewe’s West End. Working with families: It runs after School Clubs for children 9-16 and a wide range of holiday activities. There are facilities for hire which include a conference room and training room. Hiring space helps support its work. _

In August, the Chamber issued a press statement following the Government’s announcement to review the delivery of HS2 phase 2a calling it ‘extremely disappointing.’ It stated: Crewe and the surrounding area is already beginning to see the benefits of planned investment in HS2. Existing businesses are expanding and new businesses are locating in the area which is creating significant economic growth. It would be a disaster to put all this at risk. This review must work at pace with our business communities to improve and hone this crucial infrastructure project, which is so important to business confidence. We will continue to lobby for HS2 and an integrated hub for Crewe, which help the economic regeneration of the town and the surrounding regions.

Disaster recovery event goes underground at ‘secret’ venue South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce continued its programme of events with a presentation on how to create robust business systems. Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker was the venue for the ‘Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery’ session offering guidance on how to protect against unplanned events such as natural disasters, technology failures and malicious activity. Nantwich-based Atlas Business Group and partner Datto guided delegates through a series of scenarios and potential implications ranging from loss of reputation and customers to complete business failure. Chamber members were advised how one in five businesses are affected by some form of disruption every year. Fire, flood, loss of power, loss of data or even staff were common pitfalls. Members were encouraged to protect their data and ensure the business incorporates a full recovery plan to ensure there is a quick and efficient back-up to their IT systems. Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman said: “This was the latest in our series of ‘In the Know’ events offering guidance from specialists on important topics. “This presented members with crucial information on how to protect against disaster and ensure their business continuity plan is robust and reliable.” There was also a chance to see behind the scenes of the former government-owned nuclear
bunker now a popular tourist attraction and home to the Atlas Business Group. Atlas Business Development Manager Adam Bell said: “We would like to thank everyone who attended and hope they gained some valuable information about dealing with the real threats facing todays Businesses. We are proud to partner with Datto, providing comprehensive Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery solutions for any size of business.
“We would also like to thank Daryl and Angela from the Chamber of Commerce for putting the event together, and of course Naomi and Adam from Datto, for providing a brilliant and informative presentation.” _

Cheshire East Council is staging free masterclasses to help business people learn how to win public sector contracts. Small and medium-sized businesses are encouraged to sign-up for sessions. Previous masterclasses have been highly rated by participants, with 100% recommending them to other businesses. The next take place on 27 November, at Riverside Congleton, in association with East Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and 19 February 2020, at Wychwood Park, in association with South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce.
“Each masterclass will explain how public sector procurement works, the different frameworks in public sector contracts and how to identify the best opportunities.” Based on three key areas, find, bid and win, businesses will also have the opportunity to quiz the council’s own procurement team on how they evaluate bids and award tenders.
Olivia Ryder, managing director of COS Recruitment, an established recruitment agency based in Macclesfield, attended a previous masterclass and found it very beneficial. She said: “The masterclass covered everything I was looking to find out – an organised step-by-step guide to the practicalities of finding, evaluating and preparing a winning tender. The presentation was dynamic, engaging and delivered in a down-to-earth, jargon-free manner. It had exactly the right balance of providing the useful information needed, as well as answering the specific issues of the audience.” Each masterclass will explain how public sector procurement works, the different frameworks in public sector contracts and how to identify the best opportunities. Cllr Craig Browne, deputy leader of Cheshire East Council said: “Whether you are new to tendering or looking to improve, these masterclasses offer an invaluable opportunity to learn new skills, identify your strengths and unique selling points, and help you win more tenders to secure growth.” The public sector is a massive market opportunity. By 2020, the UK government hopes to award 33% of its procurement budget to
smaller businesses, out of a total UK public sector spend of around £200bn a year. Cheshire East Council alone spends around £260m annually on contracts, supplies and services with third parties. Businesses should book places at www. eventbrite.com and search under ‘Tendering in Cheshire East’.

Council hosts free tendering masterclasses to boost local businesses
Here and now! Whether you like it or not, your business is open 24/7 on the IOT and World Wide Web. Even while you sleep your virtual business door will always be open to attract the next potential deal, the curious competitor, the next board member or potentially a new star employee. This prospect is quite daunting when we realise there is no rest from the digital world, no time to switch off and take time to reflect on the ‘why’ question as the world keeps spinning around. Around the world we hear the negative news of the rain forests burning away, people suffering in war zones, deprivation and starvation and wonder how we can, as individuals, help to make a difference? Our best antidote to overcome the sense of overwhelm in the face of the huge worldwide problems is to focus on ‘action’ and what we do best in the ‘here and now’ today, even if just a small gesture. Cheshire Connect exists to support the local issues. Cheshire has a number of defined pockets of deprivation. Indeed, in Crewe we have one of the areas identified as one of the most deprived in England. You can help by considering to offer a small amount of time to share your business, professional or academic skills to support a grass roots charity.
“CSR orientation can enhance employee satisfaction, motivation and commitment and provide added value and differentiation to attract customers, clients and helps to positively engage with stakeholders.” We believe there are always opportunities to help the local grass roots charities operating on your doorstep; non-profit organisations with the purpose to help those less fortunate in our communities across Cheshire. The process of skill sharing, just a small amount of time, could make a huge difference. You too could participate and demonstrate your core ethics and values. You can ‘live’ those values and ethics by putting ‘your words into action’ – even while you sleep! _

Here are a couple quotes from a charity and skill donor on the benefits of accessing support or opportunities via Cheshire Connects services. ‘Cheshire Connect provided us with valuable insight that we could not afford to buy-in, from a highly competent and valuable expert in the field. With the facilitation of skill-sharing, our non-profit organisation has been enabled, from the ground up, to identify and explore each area which we had previously struggled in from both regulatory compliance to customer expectations. Having an expert make recommendation, guide us through a change process and provide training to our team has been invaluable. Thank you, Dianne, for your hard work matching Recoup with CNCU.’ Georgina Richards, Manager, Cheshire Neighbours Credit Union (CNCU) ‘I have found the whole process rewarding on every level, and I appreciate the trust placed in Recoup by Cheshire Connect and Cheshire Neighbours Credit Union. I am glad that my companies can assist other organisations in the local community and their customers to achieve their goals.’ Ryan Jones, MD, Recoup Financial Solutions and its sister company Recoup and Training Solutions.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
In the
Spotlight with...
David Ashwell AO Logistics managing director
AO Logistics is a recent addition to the Chamber family of Patrons. The green ‘smiley face’ branding is a familiar sight on Weston Road in Crewe and with customers nationwide. As an online retailer of white goods and electricals, its name has become synonymous with value and great customer service. Here we meet the man at the helm, David Ashwell Interview with Jan Roberts – Pure PR Solutions
Q. David tell us about your role and responsibilities… As MD of AO Logistics, my main responsibly is to ensure every customer receives an amazing delivery experience when they order trough AO.com or any of our third-party clients.
14
BUSINESS NEWS QUARTER 3 2019
IN THE SPOTLIGHT Q. What was your background before joining AO.com? I cut my teeth in food retail aged 18 when I joined Sainsburys as a trainee manager. After spending more than 12 years with the retailer and progressing through roles, I moved to Iceland Foods as an Area Manager in the late 90’s, where I was responsible for 15 stores in South London. Following this, I moved to the frozen food retailer’s head office where I gained responsibility for several departments including; merchandising, store planning, and during my last role I was accountable for the strategy, marketing and financial performance of the appliance business within Iceland stores. Following more than 9 years at Iceland, I joined Expert Logistics as its MD, which later became part of the AO family in 2006 and in 2009 rebranded as AO Logistics. Q. How does being based in Crewe benefit the company? Crewe has proven to be an amazing place to do business, since moving here in 2012 we have witnessed many successes and without a doubt, the location of our business has played a massive part in our journey. Crewe has a fantastic and diverse workforce, with great transport links and a real community spirit.
“See people for who they really are not their job description. They will amaze you if you let them.” Q. This summer AO.com showed its support of the South Cheshire business community by becoming a Patron of the Chamber, how important is this do you feel? We owe a lot to Crewe and it was high time we repaid that debt. Paul and the team have been great and patient supporters of AO and we are delighted to be able to reciprocate through our patronage. The Chamber do great things with local business and in the community in general, and it was clear that we had the same aims. Becoming a patron seemed the right way to achieve them, together.
AO.com was honoured for its people-approach to doing business at the Chamber Business Awards last autumn, winning Contribution to the Community for charity works as well as Employer of the Year for ensuring a good work-life balance for employees. Tell us more about your policy on this. We operate to a few simple principles; we live to our values, be bold, caring, smart, driven and fun and we always see people for who they are rather than a job description. I like my colleagues to operate an “I won’t count, if you don’t count” principle of supporting one another when we need flexibility or when one of our team needs flexibility, and I think this level of support is what creates a successful team, as we all succeed together. From our own accomplishments, we feel a responsibility to help others where we can and are hugely proud of the work our people have done, for example, raising money for so many local charities. I am the one who gets to stand on stage and accept the award, but our people are the ones who give their time, passion and effort to help and I am extremely proud of every individual. Q. You have previously spoken about the company’s recruitment policy based on personality, can you expand? It’s simple, you can’t pay someone to care they just will, or they won’t. We recruit people who demonstrate our values and believe the rest can be achieved by training, support and development given within the business. Q. How do you relax away from work? I love to spend time with my wife Lisa, son Elliott and our three dogs (Kenny, Libby and Chaucer). However, when I’m not being a family man, I’m a big sports fan and although I’m now too old to play, I follow most tournaments. Finally, when I have the time, I am a bit of a dab hand at DIY, even if I do say so myself! Q. Who is your biggest influence/inspiration and why? My life has been steered through several inspirational people, too many to mention. But, suffice to say, I typically take influence from nice people, who are passionate and care about whatever they do – often they can be the biggest influencer without even knowing it.
Q. You are a family man and animal-lover with three dogs. Tell us about your other loves – classic sports cars I am a huge car fanatic; my wife thinks I’m obsessed! My first realistic car love was the TVR V8 Chimaera and I now happily own a beautiful star mist blue example called Trevor. My dream car was always an Aston, and (after saving for a long time), I have recently added a meteorite silver V8 Vantage to my collection. However, I’m sad to say, I am now officially done with buying cars, but they both make me smile whenever I drive them. I often receive comments in the office as people will tell me that they would love to own a dream car, and I always give them the same advice; if you can, do it, now! Q. What is your greatest achievement to date? I am going to stick to work for this one. Without doubt it is what we have achieved as a team at AO logistics since joining in 2009. I am hugely proud to have been a part of this journey and it has been an honour to work with the talented and dedicated family here at Crewe and across the AO group. I wouldn’t change any of it, even throughout the tough times. There is a picture in our office of the old rundown depot we once occupied, and we proudly show everyone who come to visit us to show what an incredible transformation we have achieved as a team. It’s a nice reminder of where we came from and where we are today, something I am unbelievably proud of. Q. You like to travel with your family. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? I’ve been lucky enough to travel a lot, I’ve been to many exotic places around the world and I can safely say there is nowhere I’d rather live than here. We might not have the weather but when you stop for a moment and take a look around, I’m often reminded what a beautiful country I live in. Q. What is the motto you live and work by? See people for who they really are not their job description. They will amaze you if you let them.

South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce has welcomed a major household name onboard as a Patron as it promotes the area as a great place to invest and create new jobs. The Chamber has earned the backing of online white goods and electricals retailer AO.com which operates its UK logistics centre from Weston Road in Crewe. The company which employs more than 3000 people countrywide and more than 600 at its logistics centre in Crewe, joins the ranks of several high profile businesses and organisations which support the Chamber as Patrons. Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman said: “AO.com is a huge online supplier of household appliances and electricals and a Great British success story. “Its name has become synonymous with top notch customer service and it is testament to Crewe’s excellent transport links that it runs such a large scale distribution operation from here. “Over the years we have also come to know it as a caring employer with a strong emphasis on staff development and welfare. We are delighted to welcome AO.com as our newest Patron and look forward to working together on shouting out about all that is great and good about the South Cheshire business community.” AO.com was honoured for its peopleapproach to doing business at the Chamber Business Awards last autumn. It won the Contribution to the Community category for its charity works and was named Employer of the Year for ensuring a good work-life balance for employees. Businesses heard about its unique culture led by ‘caring people’ and a recruitment policy based on personality. Managing director David Ashwell commented on AO Logistics becoming Chamber Patron. He said: “We’re delighted to have become a Patron of South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce. With our UK logistics network working out of Crewe, we have seen first-hand the vital work the Chamber does to support the South Cheshire business community. “We are looking forward to working together and with other local businesses to make the area a great place to do business and to also help attract talent into the local community.” The company joins Assurant, Bentley Motors, Cheshire College South & West, Manchester Metropolitan University, Mornflake, Reaseheath Colllege and SG World and The Guinness Partnership as Patrons. Meanwhile membership of the Chamber is growing across a diverse range of sectors. Newcomers this summer range from jam-makers and marketeers to business consultants and beauticians. _

Another fun-filled day at Assurant Building on the success of the last two years, Assurant’s European Head Office in Crewe held its third Family Fun Day event in the summer. Bigger and better than ever before, Assurant opened its door to 900 employees, their friends and their families. The event was officially opened by Assurant’s Commercial Officer, International Markets, Andy Morris, and the Lighthouse Centre’s Pastor David Edwards. Assurant and the Lighthouse centre are both actively supporting the wonderful, community programme to regenerate Flag Lane Baths to transform the locally listed art-deco Flag Lane Swimming Baths into a vibrant destination, providing a valuable resource for Crewe. Assurant’s Family Fun Day is organised by its Engagement Champion Team (ECT) who gathers feedback after every event and uses it to implement improvements year on year and the team really hit the mark this year. The ECT arranged fun fair rides and fabulous food, including burgers, burritos, and cake. Guests also competed in the ‘Assurant Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’ to see who could handle a remote-control car through a series of obstacles in the fastest time, with the winner walking away with the much-coveted trophy.
Tracy Higgs, Assurant employee, said: “I just wanted to say a huge thank you from myself, family and friends who attended the Family Fun Day. We were the first people there and – thanks to my 11-year-old grandson - practically the last out. I’m not sure how they managed to arrange for the weather to be so perfect but hats off to them. The event was fantastic, great rides, lots of prizes for the youngsters, the face painter was brilliant, and the food was delicious. It catered for the very young in our group to the adults – smashing!”
“Being able to host the Assurant Family Fun day is a great way for the business to showcase how much we value our employees by sharing such a memorable day with their family and friends,” said Andy Morris. _

Introducing Bentley’s new flying bees Bentley Motors’ historic site in Crewe is already famous for producing the models that have carried its “flying B” emblem on the bonnet for 100 years, but thanks to a new biodiversity initiative, the company is now creating a buzz with the introduction of 120,000 “flying bees” of a different kind. With the help of local beekeepers, two national hives, which are collectively home to 120,000 British Apis Mellifera honey bees, have been successfully installed on grassland at the edge of the Bentley site. The area has been sown with bee friendly wild flowers and is proving to
18
BUSINESS NEWS QUARTER 3 2019
be the perfect habitat for the bees. Each hive has the potential to create around 50 jars of honey. Peter Bosch, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Manufacturing explains: “Although our Pyms Lane site is over 80 years old, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our environmental footprint and achieve our goal of carbon neutral operations. “We already have the largest solar car port in the UK on our site - which means that all of our electricity use is now either solar or certified green – so we’ve also started to look at ways we can use our site to increase local biodiversity.
“Bees populations are in decline in the UK, so installing two hives to help boost biodiversity is a great way to make use of the grassland at the edge of the site. “Our “flying bees” are honeybees that have been bred by local beekeepers with over fifty years’ experience. With their help, we’re checking on them every week and it’s great to see that they’re already starting to produce the first Bentley honey.” _

Programme to help entrepreneurs launch new ideas starts in January In March 2019, C-Lash false eyelashes hit the shelves in Boots stores across the country – a new range specifically for people suffering from hair loss due to medical conditions or treatment, such as chemotherapy. Founded by Cheshire-based entrepreneur Codilia Gapare, C-Lash follows her breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and subsequent hair loss, including her eyelashes. We first met Codilia in 2017, when she joined our SMART Cheshire Innovation Programme, a series of business support workshops designed to help individuals and small business owners go from idea to prototype. It’s been incredible watching Codilia’s journey to award-winning entrepreneur over the last few years, and we’re delighted to announce that we’re running the SMART Cheshire Innovation Programme again from January 2020. The programme is open to micro and small to medium-sized businesses in Cheshire and Warrington, it’s a practical, interactive programme, and an opportunity to delve into their product ideas, to explore topics from business propositions to research and development.
As this programme is fully funded by the European Regional Development Fund, there isn’t a cost to attend but individuals must meet the eligibility rules. If you’re thinking about creating a new product or service, or wondering how to go from concept to market, get in touch.

Nantwich man retires from top cereal brand Mornflake A finance director who helped steer the growth of one of South Cheshire’s most iconic firms has stepped down to enjoy retirement and his growing family. Father-of-four David Warr from Willaston, Nantwich was thrown a party at Crewe Hall after a long career at family-owned cereal company Mornflake where he has been part of the management team since 1992. Over the years he helped oversee growth of the brand into exciting, new markets including America, China and South Africa and secure its place as one of the world’s best-loved breakfasts, enjoyed in 56 different countries. In that time Mornflake’s oat-based product portfolio has grown too from various lines of porridges to different varieties of fruity mueslis
and nutty granolas adored by trendy food bloggers and health-conscious cooks. Mr Warr, a trained accountant, joined as company secretary and soon after became finance director holding the purse strings of major investment including a ‘Mighty Oat’ rebrand across the product range and its famous fleet of orange lorries. He said: “Oat-based products, in particular porridge, have developed a new image and are right up there with foods recognised for their nutritional value. Mornflake has been at the forefront of this and despite its growth and enviable reputation, it has remained familyowned and proud of its local roots. “Employees feel valued and my 27 years are eclipsed by many members of staff who have
served much longer, often straight from school. I very much enjoyed my time there.” Mr Warr has retired to spend more time with his family. There are three grandchildren, including a new baby girl. One of his last duties was to join the Lea family, who own Mornflake, in welcoming His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent, the Queen’s first cousin, to the Gresty Road site where he officially opened a Cereal Innovation Centre where ingredients for tasty new lines are blended and packed before being shipped around the world. _

Taking place at the company’s Crewe headquarters, colleagues and their families were delighted by an afternoon of outdoor games, a live band, delicious food and drink and much more. During the celebrations, staff were treated to a special celebratory presentation, which showcased the company’s key milestones, achievements and memorable moments over the past 50 years. How South Cheshire Chamber can help you trade internationally As with many businesses, the “opportunity” to work through the BREXIT situation, which may add costs and time to our timeline in supporting our customers, is the most pressing of challenges at this time. As a business CMC DayMark has been proactive in ensuring that our business and our customers’ business are prepared as best as we possibly can be to manage this potential change and maintain our recognised position as the leading player in our market.
It is to this end that we work with the team at South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and International Trade Manager Jacqui Morris. Visiting our operation, delivering direct and relevant training and support to our colleagues who moving forward will manage our exports. The support provided, as with the service we supply at CMC DayMark has been second to none. The Chamber has a wealth of experience and it has been a joy to learn from likeminded BUSINESS people who understand the challenges that SME’s encounter every day, even more so in light of the BREXIT Challenges. _ Greg Fitchet, General Manager. Across South Cheshire and the wider North West, companies are realising the benefits of selling internationally – but there are still hundreds of firms that could export more. Kevin Ledwith Export Finance Manager for Cheshire, Merseyside and South Manchester explains how UK Export Finance can help. Goods and services from South Cheshire and the wider North West are in demand across the world. In the 2018 - 2019 financial year, UKEF gave business in the North West £19 million in support, enabling £46 million in contract wins. Companies that export are more profitable, create more jobs and are more productive. This is the power of exporting - it’s the ultimate winwin-win. But there are hundreds of firms from South Cheshire – perhaps including yours – that are not taking advantage of these opportunities. Why is that?
I talk to businesses every day, and what I hear a lot is that, even if they have a great idea or product, they can find getting the necessary finance or insurance from the private sector challenging. This means that they could find their cashflow restricted if they took on a big export contract, or that they worry about the risks of entering a new market. Does this sound familiar to you? If so, there is an answer.
How can UK Export Finance (UKEF) help? UKEF is the UK’s export credit agency, and our mission is to ensure that no viable UK export fails for lack of finance or insurance from their bank or insurer. I am the Export Finance Manager for South Cheshire, one of a network across the UK, and my job is to make sure that companies are getting the right export finance support and to help them bridge any gaps. This could mean anything from tailored loan guarantees to bonds and insurance.
INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Helping South Cheshire’s businesses get the Exporters Edge
UKEF can help businesses: • Win export contracts by providing attractive financing terms for overseas buyers
How can I access UKEF support? If I have inspired you to think about working with UKEF to help you export, then you can get in contact via our website and fill out a simple form, or you can contact me directly at kevin.ledwith@ukexportfinance.gov.uk. I have over 20 years of experience in supporting international trade and promoting exports, and would love to help your company succeed internationally and share the benefits of exporting.
• Fulfil orders by supporting working capital loans or contract bonds • Get paid by insuring against buyer default By getting your finances right and the appropriate insurance, you will not only put yourself in the best position to take on an export contract, but you will be more competitive and be able to win more business as a result. As I said, it’s a win-win-win.

Last year, UKEF support resulted in over £40 million worth of overseas sales for businesses from the North West. One of these companies was Cheshire based Cartwright Group, who manufacture HGV trailers. UKEF’s support for an additional working capital facility helped the company reduce the impact that this sizeable transaction could have had on its cash flow after it secured a contract to supply a major Australian retailer. UKEF can support businesses of all sizes and in all sectors. In fact, SMEs can benefit from our partnership with five major highstreet banks, which allows them to access up to £2 million of government support directly from their bank.

Culture and creativity to steam forward with new strategy for Crewe After two years of work involving national experts, councils, businesses and local people, Crewe is on-track to make arts, culture and heritage central to the community with the launch of the new Cultural Strategy for Crewe. After two years of work involving national experts, councils, businesses and local people, Crewe is on-track to make arts, culture and heritage central to the community with the launch of the new Cultural Strategy for Crewe. From spectacular outdoor light installations and vibrant, new theatrical ventures, to digital skills training for young people and dance programmes for people with dementia, Crewe has already demonstrated the commitment to making culture central to the town’s development over the next decade. The Crewe Cultural Forum, made up of over 100 people and organisations within the town, announced the creative blueprint on Monday 5 August. The strategy identifies goals to support the regeneration of Crewe through culture and heritage, aiming to create an environment where inspiration, innovation and creativity lead the economic growth of the area. From championing Crewe’s heritage, introducing new opportunities for involvement in the arts and an encouragement to creative start-ups to spark new ideas within the town - the strategy outlines six key outcomes: • Give young people a sense of cultural identity and opportunities to explore it • Create confidence and distinction for culture in Crewe • Promote, celebrate and protect Crewe’s unique heritage • Create a strong, sustainable creative and digital sector • Recognise culture’s ability to promote positive health and wellbeing • Make Crewe a vibrant place that has culture and creativity at the heart of its economic success and appeal.
Interested parties identified the need for a strategy in 2017 to enable town stakeholders to work together. They commissioned The Audience Agency to analyse box office and event visitor data, reporting on the cultural engagement habits of people in Crewe and to identify cultural programming opportunities. A core working group, including the Lyceum Theatre, Cheshire East Council, Crewe Town Council, Crewe Heritage Centre, Cheshire College South and West, South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and YMCA Crewe convened to identify main themes and generate next steps for public engagement. In 2019 the core group held a number of workshops and, with award-winning Crewe-based film company Squeaky Pedal, created “My Town Is Crewe” research films.
Opening the doors to new and emerging artists based within the town has broadened the outlook of the collective with exciting and inspiring fresh partners, such as Dope Male Performance Company and Platform Theatre, acting as trailblazers for the younger generation and ensuring a truly intergenerational approach to securing the success of the new Cultural Strategy and Forum. __

Peter Robinson – LUMEN Crewe’s night of lights
“Crewe is at a unique point in its journey and has an unrivalled opportunity to capitalise on our position as the gateway to the North West.” Adam Knight, Chair of the Crewe Cultural Forum and Director of Crewe Lyceum Theatre, said: “Crewe is at a unique point in its journey and has an unrivalled opportunity to capitalise on our position as the gateway to the North West. The exciting new focus on creativity and culture that the Strategy represents is something that the Cultural Forum is proud to champion. Our town has a wealth of untapped ideas, potential collaborations and inspiring opportunities to explore in order to shape Crewe as a place where creativity in all its forms is celebrated and is allowed to thrive within the heartbeat of the community.”

Peter Robinson – LUMEN Crewe’s night of lights
Exciting plans have been unveiled to boost Crewe’s ‘feel-good factor’ and increase the town’s appeal to visitors with a spectacular season of lights in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Crewe Town Council will raise the curtain on Lumen 2019 following the smash hit success of last year’s month-long campaign which attracted more than 11,000 people from across Cheshire and beyond to its sparkling launch night. This year’s eagerly-anticipated Lumen Crewe’s Nights of Lights kicks off on November 29 and will run until December 27 with Municipal Buildings once again brought to life with a dazzling array of projected illuminations. The fun-filled launch night, which also coincides with the festive lights switch on, will include a winter market, funfair, community lantern parade, light installations and a jawdropping display by an acrobat hanging from a giant helium balloon floating in the night sky. The council is working with ArtReach and Double Take Productions, both well known in the art and entertainments industry, to stage the spectacle as part its campaign to promote leisure-led prosperity and put Crewe on the map as the go-to town for events with a difference. Crewe Mayor Benn Minshall said: “Crewe is a great place to live, work and invest and our aim is to promote that. Lumen certainly got people talking about the town in a positive way. The feed-back was fantastic. “Considering it was such a new and bold addition to our events programme, it couldn’t have been any more successful. Now I’m very
much looking forward to Lumen 2019. The event is shaping up to be just as big and bright, if not more so, and there will be a few surprises on the night.”
“The crowd-pulling Lumen launch night, which takes place from 5-8pm, will feature an unforgettable performance by unique aerial shows company The Dream Engine.” The crowd-pulling Lumen launch night, which takes place from 5-8pm, will feature an unforgettable performance by unique aerial shows company The Dream Engine. It’s staggering Heliosphere show which creates the illusion of flying will see an acrobat spiralling and spinning while suspended beneath a helium balloon above the town centre rooftops. The town council is also hosting a colourful lantern parade and wants to hear from community groups and organisations that would like to get involved. Lumen light show is not the only attraction that local people and visitors have to look forward to. Other mouth-watering events also in the pipeline. Over the weekend December 7 and 8, there will be a Victorian Christmas Market by The Ministry of Steampunk - creators of Weekend
at the Asylum, the world’s largest and longest running Steampunk Festival. The festival drew more than 100,000 people to Lincoln over the August Bank Holiday and is expected to be a huge hit in Crewe. On December 14 there will also be illuminated displays on Crewe’s Memorial Square. Further details to be released nearer the time. This year’s attractions follow on from a hugely successful 2018 campaign which saw more than double the number of people drawn to Christmas light switch-on events in previous years. The increase in footfall led to a bumper £104,995 spent in local outlets, based on a specially-commissioned survey of families attending. Food was the family treat with lengthy queues seen in cafes, fish and chip shops and coffee houses that stayed open late for the launch night. While most were from Crewe, others travelled from Stoke, Newcastle, Middlewich, Northwich and Derbyshire after hearing about Lumen on Facebook. _

Success on a plate for Nantwich Food Festival After attracting 40,000 happy visitors and 200 contented exhibitors, Nantwich Food Festival was hailed another big success. Andrew Martin, Festival Director, and his wife Linda, said: “A real highlight of the weekend was the transformation of the Civic Hall into a demonstration theatre where the four celebrity chefs and local chefs showed their cooking prowess to the delight of the packed audiences.” At the opposite end of the town centre, the Vegetarian Society hosted the 2nd demonstration theatre on Festival Friday to steer us in how to cook some plant-based recipes. For the rest of the weekend, local businesses including Festival sponsors Cheshire College, Reaseheath and Snugburys plus other local chefs, showed their culinary skills. Festival Friday evening was a treat for all, with street entertainment and lots of fun activities for children and adults alike. Live music started on Friday and continued right through until the very end of the Festival, creating a great atmosphere at both The Vine Inn Bowling Green music stage, as well as at the Love Lane music stage. The Kids Marquee, part sponsored by Alpha Omega, was again a huge success. Volunteers were kept busy all weekend helping the children with crafts, seed sowing, spaghetti sculptures and gingerbread decorating.
For the 3rd year, the burger-making competition was eagerly contested, and Olivia Howarth, aged 11, won the great prize of an iPad kindly donated by Clewlow’s Butchers. The BBQ competition was won by Sherwin Achebuche who carried off a top of the range Broil King barbecue. Festival sponsor Cheerbrook Farm Shop supplied all meat for this popular contest. The large exhibitor marquees sponsored by Mornflake, Applewood Independent, Hall Smith Whittingham and Cheerbrook, sold a great range of food, drinks and gifts. Festival Director John Coulter said: “We would like to send a special thank you to both Nantwich Town Council and Cheshire East Council. Their support of the event enables it to take place every year for the sole benefit of Nantwich businesses, and to encourage visitors to return to the town. “Festival organisers have already heard feedback from visitors and exhibitors alike. Comments gathered from a survey of exhibitors will help guide our plans for 2020.” Volunteer co-ordinator Ana Martins thanked her team of volunteers saying: “Without the passion and hard work of the volunteers, the Festival would simply not go ahead – we are all volunteers, whether we work two hours over the Festival weekend or throughout the entire year.
If anyone would like to join us as a volunteer, then just contact me via the Festival website or email me at volunteers@nantwichfoodfestival. co.uk” And Festival Chairman, Christine Farrell, added: “We want to thank the local residents and businesses for their support and patience with the organisational and infrastructural demands of holding this event in the town itself. We do this every year to ensure that visitors experience the town, not just the Festival.” Dates for Nantwich Food Festival 2020 have already been set - September 4-6. A company famed for its breakfast products worldwide welcomed a Royal visitor marking the launch of a new Cereal Innovation Centre at its Crewe headquarters. Mornflake, a long-standing Chamber Patron and home to the British ‘Mighty Oat’, played host to His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent, the Queen’s first cousin, as it continues to nourish the world with its oat-based cereals milled on Gresty Road. The Duke, 83, unveiled a plaque officially opening the Cereal Innovation Centre where the ingredients for tasty new lines are blended and packed before being sent on their way around the world. The Royal guest was told about the history of Mornflake which is Britain’s fourth oldest family-owned company, spanning 15 generations of the Lea family starting with William Lea who began milling oats in Swettenham in 1675. The Duke heard how the company is an ambassador for Crewe of global reach with products reaching breakfast tables in 56 different countries including China, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Australia – all proudly carrying the town’s name on each and every cereal packet. A rebranding exercise, hailing Crewe – home to the ‘Mighty Oat’ – was continuing to raise the profile of the humble oat as a nutritional powerhouse loved by everyone from food bloggers to extreme sport fans. The Duke was greeted at Mornflake’s Gresty Road mill by managing director, John Lea, his sons, James and Edward, and Cheshire East Mayor Cllr Barry Burkhill and his wife, Sue, Mayoress. The party was shown the automated processes involved in the Cereal Innovation Centre, which has been built on-site to upscale new lines created in the mill’s development kitchen.

The Duke also heard how the firm, with its trademark orange branding, creates a variety of porridge, granola and muesli products which help support the livelihoods of British farmers by using only their oats. Mr Lea said: “Just like the railway industry, which shaped Crewe’s past and will drive it forward, we don’t stand still. Innovation is key and we strive to bring new flavours and textures to cereal-lovers who appreciate our unstinting dedication to quality and remain loyal to the brand. “We take great pride in flying the flag for Crewe and it was an honour to welcome His Royal Highness to Gresty Road as we begin this new chapter in our history.” Mornflake is a major South Cheshire employer of more than 300 people and a longtime sponsor of Crewe Alexandra FC and crowdpullers such as the upcoming Nantwich Show.

Mornflake managing director John Lea (centre) receives his award from UK Food and Drink Federation President Gavin Derby and Chief Executive Ian Wright
A family man at the helm of one of the country’s oldest companies was honoured with a special award from the UK Food and Drink Federation. John Lea, managing director of milling firm Mornflake, was recognised for nearly 50 years of service to the food and drink industry at the Federation’s annual awards ceremony, staged in London. He has served as President of both the British and European Oat Associations, the Association of Cereal Food Manufacturers, and as a Council member of the European Breakfast Cereal Association. The Federation paid tribute to an industry stalwart who continues to evolve 340 years of independent milling and leads pioneering innovation into oat-based cereals loved worldwide. It said: “John joined the group in 1972 at a time when the milling industry was still struggling to recover from the end of rationing and decades of lost investment. Through a focus on technological advance, product innovation and continuous reinvestment, he has evolved the group to be at the forefront of these and other
food manufacturing disciplines. He continues to chair the company today and is joined by his two sons and nephew in the business.” The awards are recognised as a benchmark for excellence in the food and drink industry. They celebrate talented individuals who support the industry in improving the health of the nation and are crucial to developing innovative new products. Mornflake, which mills products in Crewe and also has factories in Scotland and Wales, creates a variety of wholesome porridge, granola and muesli products which support the livelihoods of British farmers by using their oats. Its products are reached for in supermarkets nationwide including a new high-profile presence in Morrisons. Mr Lea said: “The Special Recognition award was a tremendous honour which recognised not just my role, but the expertise of our millers and the whole team.” _

Changes to First Aid training for child carers Chamber member Apple Safety Services Limited is offering a new online training platform for the Paediatric First Aid course. As of August 2019 Apple Safety Services Limited are offering a new platform for Ofsted approved Paediatric First Aid in the form of e-learning and classroom based blended training. The blended course combines six hours of practical training in the classroom, with six hours of theory based interactive e-learning. The syllabus for the course meets the requirements of OFSTED as stated in DfES guidance (April 2017); complying with the framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. The first stage is to register students onto an e-learning portal. The portal will send login details and instructions to the individuals email address provided to enable the learner to begin the online course. This part of the course predominately covers the theory side which reduces the amount of time spent in the classroom. The next step is to attend the classroom session which again is six hours learning the same life-saving practical skills that have always been taught predominately as day one. Students have three months to complete the course and multiple attempts can be made. The pass rate for the online assessment is 80%, with an electronic certificate available for download on successful completion.

BUSINESS NEWS QUARTER 3 2019
Students must have passed the online assessment prior to attending the classroom element. Michelle Carter for Apple Safety Services said: “This has obviously has a massive impact on childcare settings giving the business a more flexible approach to ensuring staff compliance. Not only does it mean that childcare settings no longer have the headache of trying to accommodate the old 2 day program but it means individuals will be able to digest and complete the theory element at their own pace in a relaxed environment. “The added bonus of breaking down the course into two modules allows childcare settings the opportunity to achieve the Millies Trust award by training all staff in Paediatric First Aid whether they are included in ratios or not. All the non-ratio staff would have to complete just the practical module which will give them an Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification on successful completion. “As soon as the course is booked this is sufficient evidence for Ofsted that the qualification is being undertaken.” _

Aqueduct Marina proves a splash hit with boat show Church Minshull-based Aqueduct Marina marked its 10th anniversary in style by staging its very own boat show. The event, attended by as many as 800 visitors, was also an ideal opportunity to launch a new logo and to underline a long-standing focus of having ‘more time for you’ - something of great importance to the Aqueduct team. It followed a successful, albeit smaller, 2018 show however this year’s show featured 30 exhibitors from a range of sectors including boat builders, boat share businesses and manufacturers and retailers of equipment such as solar panels and boat chandlery and equipment. Exhibitors reflected the deliberate intention of aiming the show squarely at the inland waterway’s community, or at anyone thinking of becoming part of this increasingly popular community. To help visitors achieve this, Aqueduct’s team were on hand to provide advice and help with anything from boat buying to finding a mooring. Boats were undoubtedly the focus of the event with new boats on show from Knights Narrowboats, Elton Moss boat builders and Breyzal Boats. And for those more interested in used craft 15 narrowboats were on display in the brokerage section. Viewing these boats gave visitors an opportunity to enjoy looking around the mooring facilities on offer at the marina. The day was eventually rounded off by a performance from renowned an Elvis Presley tribute act.
Robert Parton, Managing Director of Aqueduct Marina, said: “I would like to thank every-one who attended the show, either as an exhibitor or customer, as in doing so you have supported this growing event. I’d also like to thank our staff, who worked hard to put on the show. We look forward to seeing every-one again at next year’s Aqueduct
Boat show, or beforehand if, between us, we have persuaded a few visitors to go ahead and join the inland boating community”. Money raised during the show will go to the British Heart Foundation – Aqueduct’s chosen charity for this year, who will benefit to the tune of £421 so far.

“I was inspired to fundraise by the dedicated care of my mother in her final days and am delighted the quiz has become a much-loved fixture on the local business social calendar, attracting a good crowd every year.” It adds to the £20,000 raised by BCR and its sister company Barringtons Chartered Accountants over the years which has helped

towards various hospice projects including new mattresses for beds in the Inpatient Unit. Mr Wood, an accountant in the area for over 40 years, said: “So many local people have their stories to tell about Dougie Mac as it supports patients and their families at a time when they need it most. “I was inspired to fundraise by the dedicated care of my mother in her final days and am delighted the quiz has become a much-loved fixture on the local business social calendar, attracting a good crowd every year.” Staff working for the sister companies also combine to hold dress down Fridays, coffee mornings and whip-rounds as well as various fundraisers in their own right to boost hospice funds. Next is a Christmas jumper day. Donna Adams, Head of Fundraising & Lottery at Dougie Mac, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the generous support of Phil and his team and can only encourage other local businesses to follow in his footsteps.” Plans are in the pipeline for another BCR charity quiz next spring when supporting the hospice will be the driving force behind a team effort to stage the night. BCR helps troubled businesses get back on their feet with specialist recovery and restructuring services.

For the seventh year Chamber member, Graham Witter, has started to plan this year’s Weston Christmas Light Display to raise money for The Donna Louise Hospice for children and young people. Pride of Crewe winner Graham will once again transform his family home and garden into a Winter Wonderland to raise vital funds the Hospice which provided respite care to his late sister, Jessica, and gave many hours of support to Graham and his family. Over the last six years Graham has raised a phenomenal £92,310 for The Donna Louise Hospice, and this year he hopes to top the £100,000 fundraising mark with an even brighter and bigger display throughout December. Graham, 24, said: “Over the last six years I’ve developed a brilliant working relationship with local businesses in our community. Many of them are continuing to support and sponsor my festive fundraiser again this December and their support means that I’m able to continue the Christmas light display in our community and raise vital funds for the Hospice which cares for hundreds of other families like my own.” This year Graham’s family house, farm buildings and garden will be transformed into another festive winter wonderland with a visit from Santa every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening. Visitors will also have the chance to look inside Santa’s Grotto, listen to festive music, try a delicious mince pie and enjoy their own #festiveicecream. Each year the light display costs thousands of pounds to organise and without the support and help of the local businesses who sponsor and support the event, it simply wouldn’t be possible. Last year more than 15,000 people visited the Weston Christmas Light Display throughout December, raising an incredible £26,760 which helped fund a learning disability nurse for 12 months and provide two sign and symbol communication workshops for hospice staff. Graham added, “I’m so proud that so many local businesses are continuing to get behind me and support the light display again this year and I feel that this demonstrates they are proud to be involved with my fundraising efforts. I owe them all a huge thank-you for their continued generosity and on-going support. “I’m delighted that Swansway Motor Group are my Principal Sponsor again this December and that Whitby Morrison, my Event Partner will once again be serving delicious #festiveicecream and will be offering visitors ‘Mr Whippy’ for a light display donation. This has been hugely popular in the last couple of years and raised a remarkable £4,300 towards last year’s fundraising total.” He added: “The hospice gave me and my family exceptional help and support in difficult times before losing my sister in December 2015. Organising the light display each year and raising money for this remarkable charity is my way of saying ‘thank you’. “I love putting on a much-loved community
event for families and young children to enjoy each year and it’s always brilliant to see so many people visiting the display every December with a smile on their face, enjoying the excitement and fun of Christmas.” Everybody is invited to visit the Weston Christmas Light Display this year between 1st -
28th December, 6:15 – 9pm at Carters Green Farm, Jack Lane, Weston. _

As the nights draw in and the leaves turn brown, Crewe Lyceum Theatre is ready to embrace the autumn with a fantastic line-up of entertainment. With its intimate, playhouse atmosphere, the theatre is the perfect host for dramas, and this season is no exception. The exciting new line up is packed full of the best of the West End, alongside family favourites, headline comedians, top quality music and fringe performances from across the region. October sees Agatha Christie inspired comedy thriller Crimes on the Coast (29-30 October) in which an English Riviera retreat turns murderous in a comedy in the style of The 39 Steps. In a very busy November which includes hilarious comedy including Sindhu Vee, Glenn Moore and Ed Byrne; the theatre also welcomes the ‘gritty and gripping’ Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers. The show which plays from 5-9 November, tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on the opposite side of the tracks only to meet again with fateful consequences. Legendary Lyn Paul returns for her farewell tour as Mrs Johnstone in Bill Kenwright’s production which has been described as ‘One of the Best Musicals Ever Written’ (Sunday Times) In December and direct from the West End, Nigel’s Slater’s Toast will be providing a slice of quality entertainment for audiences from 3-7 December. Based on the British Book Awards Biography of the Year, Toast is based on Nigel’s award-winning autobiography. Vividly recreating suburban England in the 1960s, his childhood is told through the tastes and smells he grew up with and the audience with be enveloped by the evocative sights and sounds of cookery that defined the definitive moments of his youth. Speaking ahead of the tour, Nigel, who has been very involved with the production, explained: “Toast is the story of a little boy who feels abandoned because his mother dies when he’s very young and his father falls in love with another woman. The boy’s life suddenly changes with the arrival of a woman who’s completely different from his mother. It’s about learning to make your own way and gaining the strength to do something surprising at that young age, make big decisions about your life. It is my story, so I do feel protective of it. I’ve kept a close watch on it, but everyone understood it is more than just a story of a little boy and his mum. It’s a bigger than that. It’s affected many people. There are so many children that have felt abandoned after a bereavement. There are so many children that don’t understand why this new person’s come into dad’s life or mum’s life that they have to accept. It isn’t just my story. Lots of kids have that emotionally tough time. I hadn’t realised so many people would come up to me, send me letters or write emails saying ‘That is my story. That happened to me.’” Lastly for 2019 and as the festive season approaches, much-loved comedy duo Cannon & Ball return for a pantomime packed full of fun. With sparkling sets and smashing comedy, Peter Pan sets sail for adventure from 13 December until January 5. _

Peter Rossiter, the new tax manager at Barringtons Chartered Accountants, gives the low down on legislation which could hit property owners next year. Peter, who specialises in corporation tax, personal tax and tax advisory, warns of hefty bills for those who are currently renting out a property they used to live in and are considering selling it in the near future.
Tax bill warning for property owners Homeowners who currently rent out a property they once lived in could be hit with a larger than expected tax bill when they come to sell it. New government legislation due to come in force from April 6 next year could cost an individual £11,200 in extra tax - or double if they are a married couple - when selling a home that was formerly their main residence. When a homeowner sells a property they have rented out they may have to pay Capital Gains Tax, which is a tax on any profit made from the sale. Under existing legislation, property owners currently benefit from two tax reliefs - Private Residence Relief (PRR) and Letting Relief - which reduces the amount of Capital Gains Tax they would need to pay. However, from April next year homeowners who sell a property which they have both resided in and let out will no longer be able to claim up to £40,000 from Letting Relief which amounts to a £11,200 saving in tax, meaning a bigger slice of the profit from any sale would be taxable. There are also changes being made to PRR which excludes property owners from paying Capital Gains Tax for the years they lived in the property along with an added 18-month exemption period that ultimately reduces the percentage of profit they’re taxed on.
The exemption period is to be reduced from 18 months down to 9 months which could also lead to extra tax being payable, while Capital Gains Tax will now need to be paid within 30 days of a sale rather than by January 31 with a personal tax return.
For Example: Gill and Steve are higher rate taxpayers and purchased their home for £100,000. They lived in the property for 11 years before moving out and letting out the property for a further 14 years. They decide to sell the property for £300,000. If the point of sale is prior to the 6th April they would have no tax liability. If the point of sale was post 6th April 2020, they would have total tax liability of circa £22,950 which would need to be paid within 30 days of the completion of the sale. It is therefore very important that those people who are currently renting out a property they used to live in and are considering selling it in the near future, understand the changes and what it means for them.

1825 Financial Planning Selling your business as part of a retirement plan may cross the minds of many business owners. Regardless of the size of the business, the industry or geographic location, at some point you may decide it’s time to move on to the next chapter. It can be difficult to release the reins of a business you’ve spent years building up. However making that decision can play a fundamental part of retirement planning. Here are some key considerations that could help to make the process as smooth as possible for all involved:
1
Choosing the buyer
Times of change can understandably bring levels of uncertainty so finding the right person or company to sell to is an important part of your exit plan. It could affect the business you’ve worked hard to build as well as the clients and employees who have supported you. So making the right decision means any affect felt is more likely to be a positive one.
2
Choosing the right person to take over
Many business owners want to see their business thrive even after they have stepped away – and that means putting the right components in place to ensure success. Having a buyer that’s the best fit for your company can put you in the right waters (so to speak) but if you want the business to continue to grow after your departure you also need to find the captain. To that end exit planning goes hand in hand with succession planning for many business owners and entrepreneurs.
3
Selling as a retirement strategy
Just making the decision to sell your business can be tricky. Yet for many business owners it’s a fundamental requirement in order to live the life they want in retirement.
Whilst it’s true that selling can be a great way to bolster your retirement planning, relying on this alone could potentially be a very risky strategy so having a diversified plan for your retirement funds can provide a safety net to guard against any pitfalls.
4
Thinking of selling your business?
Selling your business will likely be one of the biggest decisions you will make. It’s worth seeking expert support to ensure you have a proper plan in place for your finances as you transition into retirement. This could help you achieve your retirement goals and also give you the peace of mind to know that you’ll have enough money to live the life you want. If you’re thinking of selling your business and could benefit from this sort of support, get in touch with 1825 today to find out more.
