Q U A RT E R 4 2019
Welcome
Welcome to the Chamber’s magazine ‘South Cheshire Business’.
I think that we can all agree that 2019 was a frustrating year for everyone including the business community, due to a lack of clarity and uncertainty caused principally by BREXIT. Let’s hope that 2020 can be a year to develop confidence, both nationally and locally. The result of the general election has provided relative clarity and a sense of direction, but there is a long way to go before we can put BREXIT behind us. I’d like to congratulate Dr. Kieran Mullan on becoming the Member of Parliament for Crewe & Nantwich and the Chamber looks forward to working with Kieran to take the area forward and realise its tremendous potential. Also, our congratulations to Edward Timpson on his appointment as the MP for Eddisbury. Equally commiserations to Laura Smith and we would like to say thank you for her commitment to the area.

SOUTH CHESHIRE CHAMBER PATRONS
At a local level, we too must create clarity and precision for the future of Crewe and the surrounding area. That’s why the Chamber welcomes the recent announcement by the Government of two potential investment funds that could significantly help trigger regeneration for the area. The funds are a Town Fund and a Future High Street Fund which total close to £50m. Both will require all stakeholders to work closely together to articulate and develop an ambitious vision for the area that will inspire confidence and drive economic growth. This investment together with the Crewe Branding activity, which the Chamber has been involved with, provides an excellent springboard for this area to develop and begin to maximise the opportunities available. The Chamber continues to be busy with plenty of activity supporting the local business community since the last magazine. The Chamber’s business awards (p.6) took place at Crewe Hall and once again our premier event was a fantastic evening showcasing the very best businesses and business people in the area. Congratulations to the winners and all the businesses who took part, you make this area very proud.

The Chamber always works closely with our local MP and we will be making sure that Dr Mullan gets involved in helping the local business community in our efforts to help to grow the local economy and create new jobs. It was also good to see Edward Timpson elected as MP for Eddisbury which covers part of our patch. Fiona and Michael take their seat at the Chamber Board
South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce has welcomed two new members to its Board Strategic Marketing consultant Fiona Rose and solicitor Michael Wright. Fiona has joined as a Director of the Board after working with the Chamber for the last three years delivering communications, social media and delivering the award workshops. In the first year of having Fiona’s support, she had helped to double the amount of award entries that the Chamber received. In her earlier career Fiona opened her first digital marketing agency in her early 30’s, won the UK contract for Reebok within six months and was honoured to be nominated in the Top Women of the Year. As a mother to two young girls, she

would like to lead by example and show them that they can achieve anything they put their minds to. Fiona puts her success down to her constant drive to learn, evolve and adapt in the everchanging digital industry and using the marketing channels that will get the best results for her clients. Her mission is to use the incredible experiences she has gained over the last eight years of running her own businesses to encourage and accelerate the success for the people that she works with. She has helped over 500 companies in her time as a consultant through 121 coaching, team mentoring, strategy planning and workshops. Michael is Head of Conveyancing at Hall Smith Whittingham. Locally born and educated, Michael lives in South Cheshire with his wife, children and Jack Russell. Away from work he is a keen DIY enthusiast who also treads the boards in amateur productions to raise money for charities, which, over the years, have included Wythenshawe Hospital - Cystic Fibrosis Unit, Macmillan Cancer and St John Ambulance.
He said: “I have worked exclusively in Residential Conveyancing gaining invaluable knowledge and skills, which, today, enable me to make my Clients’ journey through the conveyancing process safe, informed and stressfree.” The Board helps steer the aims and objectives of the Chamber as it works to promote activities and plans that benefit and improve the commercial, industrial and professional outputs of South Cheshire businesses. Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman welcomed Fiona and Michael saying: “The Chamber’s mission is to be an asset ‘integral to the success of local businesses and influential in promoting the future prosperity of the area.’ They share this vision and bring their excellent skills to the table.” The Chamber’s work includes shaping local regeneration and economic growth working in conjunction with the local authority and other public sector bodies lobbying in support of HS2, Crewe regeneration and infrastructure improvements.
Words from Westminster I am really glad to have the opportunity to be able to keep the business community updated on my work as the MP for Crewe & Nantwich. I know how important a thriving local business community is for creating jobs for my constituents and for generating taxes to pay for public services. The time I have already spent with local business owners has reinforced my view that setting up, running and growing a business takes an extraordinary amount of energy, persaverance and dedication. It is important that politicians understand that and don’t see business as the enemy. That doesn’t mean that it won’t sometimes be my role to challenge poor business practice and there will always need to be a balance between employees, employers and wider society when it comes to things like wages, taxes, rights and regulations. Most business people understand that. Some of the local small and medium sized businesses I have visited have really been paying close attention to the needs and wider life challenges of their staff. I have heard first hand from staff about their bosses going over and above for them in a way that isn’t captured on a balance sheet and that we need to do more to recognise. It can also mean good business sense to build up a genuine sense of family and loyalty from staff.
In terms of my focus for the business community over the next few months I have a few really key areas.
“Crewe has been awarded up to £25 million as part of a Town Deal which aims to help communities, businesses and local leaders deliver ambitious plans to transform their town’s economic growth prospects with a focus on improved transport, broadband connectivity, skills and culture.”
Successful regeneration of Crewe will bring benefits to the whole constituency but there are also immediate needs for places like Nantwich and the local villages like improved bus routes and broadband connectivity. I will need to make the case for these as government prepares to deliver a step change in investment in the regions. _
I am happy to come and meet with business owners and staff to hear about the successes and challenges you have locally so do get in touch with me on Kieran. mullan.mp@ parliament.uk. I will hopefully get to meet a whole host of you over coming years.
I will be on the Board for this project and will focus on ensuring we create sustainable improvements. That means delivering projects that will genuinely be used by local people and make a tangible difference to how attractive Crewe is for businesses.

Booming visitor economy figures on track to hit £1 billion Tourism across Cheshire East continues to thrive as new data from a survey is published. Cheshire East’s visitor economy has again increased, by £43m compared to the previous year - placing the total value of hospitality and visitor revenue at a staggering £963m. Over 16 million visitors passed through the borough, with festivals and dozens of other events and attractions continuing to boost the area’s popularity by 4.6 per cent annual growth. Of particular note is a strong rise in the Economic impact of day visitors, rising by 81.9 per cent to £712m since 2009.
Employment in the borough’s visitor economy also continues to rise, with a 36.8 per cent further increase since 2009 in full time equivalents to 11,780. Frank Jordan, executive director place and acting deputy chief executive, said:
“Cheshire East Council has a long-standing aspiration to help create a visitor economy worth £1 billion by 2020.” “We are delighted once again that our outstanding hospitality and tourism industry are continuously being recognised and are on track to meet this target at £963m.” “Cheshire East has many historic market towns and is home to a rich heritage and picturesque countryside for family days out. The borough also hosts a wealth of annual social events catering for all ages such as the Nantwich Show, The Royal Cheshire Show, the
RHS Flower Show at Tatton, the Blue Dot Festival and the many Pride events. We aim to build on this success, investing in sensational tourism schemes across the borough.” The detailed analysis of the latest figures shows a 77.1 per cent increase in the value of the visitor economy to Cheshire East since the borough came into being in 2009. Overnight stays in 2018 injected £1.55m into the accommodation sector – up 0.7 per cent on the previous year. Time is the most precious gift! Moving into 2020 you may have New Year’s resolutions, ambitions, plans and aspirations for your future business. If your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Good Business Citizenship plans are on the agenda, please consider the opportunities to help share skills for the local grass roots charities. At Cheshire Connect, we work closely with many not for profit and community groups to help identify skill requests which could help them to maintain and develop a robust and sustainable foundation. In the face of austerity and commission funding cuts, the role of the charitable organisations is vital to help support those most vulnerable in our community. There are many ways business owners, corporations and academic institutions can help with practical support, fund raising, philanthropy and skill sharing. At Cheshire Connect we focus on facilitating skill donor matches. The skill requests we receive from the local charitable organisations are wide and varied. Many skill donors reap the benefit of flexing skills in a different environment to their usual workplace and in the process identifying many transferable skills they hadn’t previously realised they possessed. Skill donors often find the experience of sharing skills gives them a better understanding of the local community issues and broadens not just work experience but enriches their personal development.

Short of capital to introduce a new idea? Get in touch The most satisfying part of the company’s growth is their ability to identify the changing marketplace, embrace it and become leaders in its development. The original concept of DVDs by post is now a distant memory but their place at the forefront of media streaming is unquestioned.
At the November Business Awards I mentioned the rise of Netflix from a start up to the US$150 Billion Business it is today. The motivation for the original concept of DVDs by post arose from an annoyingly heavy fine from Blockbuster for a late return.
NETFLIX Logo: Taken from www.netflix.com/gb/
The 10 Million plus subscribers in the UK only tells half the story if, as like me, you are a parent and your monthly subscription is not only providing your children with access to the channel but also most of their friends. One thing we need to bear in mind is that the start- up costs for this international DVD rental company were considerable and were it not for the fact that his co-founder provided $2M working capital then Mark Randolph may never have got the idea off the ground. At the South Cheshire Development Agency we operate on more modest levels but if you are short of capital to introduce or indeed develop a new idea then feel free to get in touch.
With 2020 being a Leap Year, I have always felt that this is the best year to start up on your own if only for those of you who are paid on the same date each month.
On March pay day 2020 you will all get paid as usual but in this instance you will have worked an extra day for absolutely no additional remuneration. Your boss will have got an extra day’s work from you – thank you very much.

Make 2020 your box office smash
Now I don’t suggest you treat March 2nd as a duvet day (Feb 29th is a Saturday) but maybe it might prompt you to think of starting up on your own so that come next Leap Year you get the full benefit of that extra day. Give me a call although I am still sulking from having been a same date salaried employee before I retired for 10 previous leap years. BUSINESS NEWS QUARTER 4 2019
Q. SG World has landmark headquarters on Duchy Road. Tell us more about your role and how the company helps keep people safe: Our mission at SG World is about ‘helping you make a difference’ and is really about two audiences. Our customers have a duty of care when it comes to Health and Safety, and we help provide the tools for them to instil that culture in their organisations, through our paper and electronic solutions. Our staff are our most important asset, and my role is to recruit the right people, create the environment for them to be successful, listen to them (as well as our customers) and then act when necessary. This would include new product ideas for the customer, through to enhancing the working experience for all our people. Q. SG World has grown into a global brand. Can you give us some background: The company was formed in 1969 as a subsidiary of a US business, and in 1996 my father Arnold Haase led a management buyout, and I joined in 2009. Having worked alongside him for six years before he passed away, I feel that we continue to uphold the values and beliefs that he instilled in the company, and are now on a pathway to build and grow the business to maintain his vision of becoming a global brand. Q. Away from work, you are a keen runner taking part in triathlons, marathons and half marathons. How do you bring that same drive to the workplace? On a personal note, I got to 45 and realised that I needed to challenge myself not just in work but Away from work, Mark is a keen runner
IN THE SPOTLIGHT out of work as well, and also that keeping healthy was one way to do this. I try to ensure that all our staff understand that they can have work and life goals, and through endeavour and selfimprovement, many of these can be obtained. Of course, this helps the business flourish as well when you have great people taking on that mind-set. Q. You are a married man with five children, how do to juggle the demands of your home life with jetting to SG World bases in Florida, Brussels and Dublin? It’s actually quite simple. An amazing wife and children, a fabulous PA, and I enjoy the travel and ever-changing day to day activities. Q. What do you like to do in your spare time? What spare time? In reality, I don’t like to have spare time, I like to be doing something active which might involve physical training, reading business materials, or just being in the company of my family. Q. Who inspires you and why? My inspiration is two-fold. Trying to be successful is looking at what other people do and taking the best bits and trying to apply them, so there are many people with many ideas that I look to. I am also a great believer that you either succeed or learn, and in my career, I’ve done lots of learning! so I try to use that to inspire me to avoid “learning” the same thing twice. Q. What are you looking forward to in 2020? We believe that 2020 is a year of great opportunity for us. Certainty on Brexit, investment in our people, new capabilities with state-of-the-art equipment, and of course the
main thing, a positive attitude to the coming 12 months mean we are excited and looking forward to the challenge. Q. What is your greatest achievement to date? My greatest achievement would have to be my direct and indirect work family and watching them grow and succeed in their own rights and trying to do my bit to make their hopes become reality. Q. SG World is a big employer, with 150 colleagues working in Crewe. Tell us a little about its charitable works and how it helps to motivate staff? The Arnold Haase Charitable Trust was an idea formed about six years ago, and a percentage of the SG World profits are donated to this, as well as having its own fundraising activities. Its mission is to make a difference, directly, in the local area, particularly with disadvantaged younger people. It’s early days, but hopefully what we have done so far has made a small difference. Q. How does being based in Crewe benefit the company?
“Crewe is a fantastic place to be based. Great people, a hard-working and caring community, and a place where opportunity is there, and we are all aiming to make it the best place to be for business and community together.”
Q. SG World celebrated its 50th birthday in style with parties for staff and families. How do you see the next 50 years for the company? Well 50 years is a long time, and many changes have taken place, not just in the world at large, but also in SG World. The company will continually evolve, grow and provide more employment for more people, and just continue to be a place where people are happy to come to work and also make a contribution to the wider community. Q. What is the motto you live and work by? There are two I always seem to come back to. Seek to understand. Be the best you can be.
SG World celebrated its 50th anniversary in style. The summer celebration included a marquee at the back of its premises where employees enjoyed a big family party. There was a hog roast, barbecue, Xbox bus, face painting, fairground type games, band, bar and ice cream van. At Christmas, there was a party, selection boxes for all employees and an extra two days off work on December 23 and 24. The annual company quiz night is already in the diary, where teams battle it out to win the much-coveted quiz trophy.

Year 9, 10 and 12 students at participating schools are encouraged to research and create a new vehicle which will reduce (or even eliminate!) carbon emissions from the AO delivery fleet. The final will take place at Big Bang @ Crewe, a local fair celebrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects and innovation in the area, on 28 March. Hosted at Crewe Engineering and Design UTC, finalists will present their ideas about how
to help AO towards an even greener future. Alongside a series of fantastic prizes, there will also be mentoring and work experience opportunities available. The Challenge is focused on improving the sustainability of AO deliveries and supports ‘The Future of Mobility,’ one of four ‘Grand Challenges’ set by the Government’s local industry strategy. Both local and national employers are supporting the Challenge, including Swansway garages who are sponsoring a prize. Tickets to Big Bang @ Crewe are available on Eventbrite. The Big Bang Green Challenge is just one example of AO’s logistics hub investing in their future generation. The AO Stars team, a personal
development programme for AO logistics staff, have recently smashed their fundraising target, raising a huge amount for the Flag Lane Baths redevelopment project in Crewe - look out for more news on this shortly. _

Governors, staff and learners at Cheshire College – South & West are celebrating after Ofsted rated the College “Good”. This is the first full inspection since South Cheshire College and West Cheshire College merged in March 2017. Ofsted praised the College for its “highly-effective” education programmes, which meet the specific needs and aspirations of learners and extends beyond the knowledge and skills needed to complete their qualifications. Dhesi, Principal and CEO, commented: “Learners and Apprentices at our College are able to flourish as a result of good-quality education and the opportunities made available to them. We strive to enhance every experience, ensuring learners know that we want them to be successful and enjoy their learning.” Ofsted highlighted how College leaders and teachers have high expectations for learners, including those with Special Educational Needs, and what they can achieve on education programmes. Learners were praised for their behaviour, which contributes to a professional, friendly and positive environment across all Campuses. Inspectors summarised that the curriculum is carefully planned, with considerations to the content and delivery of programmes, enabling learners to gain a basic insight before carrying
out complex tasks, that inspire and motivate. Teachers encourage learners on programmes at all levels to be ambitious, providing them with substantial knowledge and skills. For example, learners on Level 1 Information Technology
courses are given the skills needed to pursue a career in Cyber Security. In addition, learners and Apprentices at the College are able to undertake additional qualifications to enhance their skills. For example, Engineering Apprentices study extra modules in paint technology, so they leave with a detailed understanding of the wide range of roles within industry and the requirements needed
to carry out their specific role to the highest standards. Inspectors were particularly impressed with the range of support learners can access at College, including the valuable careers guidance and pastoral care. Noting “support helps increase their resilience so that they continue with their studies and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to become successful in achieving their next steps.” Dhesi added: “It is clear that the employers and universities we work in close partnership with value our contribution to their organisation and their learners. We will continue to work with employers, universities and other organisations, to strengthen this bond, ensuring that our learners progress to employment or higher-level learning with strong values and skills, allowing them to make a positive contribution to society.” _

Buying a percentage, rather than buying the whole property outright, means a smaller deposit and a smaller mortgage. It’s a sooner first step on the ladder for lots of people. The University has received £1.7million from the European Union European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to deliver the second phase of a 12-week business innovation programme in the region over the next three and a half years. The SMART Cheshire programme will offer tailored support to entrepreneurs and small businesses across the region to help them develop new products or services and grow. As the programme is fully-funded by the ERDF, there is no cost for business owners to attend the course, providing they meet the eligibility criteria. Award-winning entrepreneurs who have completed the SMART Cheshire Innovation Challenge include C-Lash founder Codilia Gapare, and Helen Tonks, co-founder with husband Mark, of Hydraulics Online. C-Lash creates false lashes for people who have lost their natural eyelashes due to medical conditions or treatment, such as chemotherapy,
while Hydraulics Online currently exports to more than 130 countries, and has just secured a six-figure contract with a construction company in China. Speaking about her experience on the programme, Codilia Gapare said: “SMART Cheshire did not only give me the confidence that I needed to take my business forward, it also put me in touch with the Women In Business Network. It was through this network that I won a scholarship to study an MBA at Manchester Metropolitan and this, combined with the continued support from the University, has been instrumental in the success of my business.” Claire Pattison, Enterprise Fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: “Thanks to the success of our business innovation programme in Cheshire over the past three years, we’re delighted to secure the funding to continue to support small businesses. “Through this second phase, we’ll engage with 150 businesses in the region, supporting at
least 75 of these to launch brand new products or services.
“SMART Cheshire is a practical, interactive programme and it’s open to micro and small to medium-sized businesses in Cheshire and Warrington. It’s a fantastic opportunity for business owners to delve into their product ideas, thoroughly exploring the process from concept to product launch.”

Rhino Safety Limited are delighted to announce the introduction of free advisory sessions for business owners and directors on the first Friday of every month. The multi award-winning Sandbachbased Health & Safety consultancy have built a reputation for giving expert advice and support whilst sticking to their mission of ‘bringing common sense back to health and safety’. They also have a strong ethos around business citizenship, winning two awards for their contribution to the community since starting the business in 2015. Director Cate Walter explained that ‘giving back’ has been at the heart of their business for good reason. “When we started our business we had a huge amount of support from the local community, and we found the advice and guidance we received to be invaluable in helping us to grow our business to be both successful and sustainable,” she said. Director and senior Consultant Simon Walter continues: “Until now, we have focussed on
providing our services for free to local charities, but we recently recognised that there are plenty of local businesses who need some help and support but worry that approaching a consultancy like ours will result in them being ‘hard sold’ to, or creating unnecessary work for them. These free sessions are to give business owners and directors the support and reassurance they need without any pressure to use our services on a more formal basis.” Any business owner, director or senior manager who wants to check their health and safety obligations, documentation or procedures can book into the free sessions, held on the first Friday of every month. The Fresh face of success…
Business Opportunities in Malta
On the 27th November the Chamber hosted its 4th International Trade forum of 2019. The event was made possible by a visiting delegation from Malta. Mario Galea and Melanie Debattista of Malta Enterprise presented to South Cheshire businesses the benefits of collaborating with the Mediterranean island of Malta. Whilst not many British companies would want the upheaval of moving jurisdiction there can be an advantage in setting up a base in Malta. Co-location can add a useful dimension, not just during the period of Brexit uncertainty but in terms of allowing for growth in the medium to long term. Malta has proved an ideal location because of its use of the English language, traditional ties to the UK and its economic benefits in terms of being pro-enterprise with financial incentives and skilled labour on offer. It has good communication links and, given its geographical position, is a useful springboard for anyone wanting to trade with Africa and the Middle East. “I attended the Malta Trade event to explore if there was any options for recruitment into the pharma industry being a small technical recruitment business, I was not sure if there would be any interest, but thought it worth going along, I was surprised by the level of interest received from the Maltese delegation.
“Even in the wake of Brexit, they (Maltese Trade delegation) were very open to options in order to import talent from across the EU in both Science and Engineering, across the pharma industry...” After open table networking, I was approached and asked to meet with the delegates and discussed the skills shortages and the expansion in the pharma industry needing support. Even in the wake of Brexit, they were very open to options in order to import talent from across the EU in both Science and Engineering, across the pharma industry initially, but opening up into the other growth areas in time. Since the meeting we have had further discussions about supporting Malta, the government and industry sectors, initially pharma, and a proposal has been submitted which will go live in January. I have also been offered the possibility of support and funding from Malta Enterprise, to set up an office in the future as the sectors increase and trade grows.
I would recommend attending the international trade meetings, even if, like me, you only have a very tentative interest. Because from that initial thought and conversation with Jacqui, attending has opened up a new country for me and will enable further growth for my business, all thanks to the International team at South Cheshire Chamber of Above: Geoff Flavell-Matts Commerce” _

Campaigners are pushing forward with plans to transform Crewe’s historic Flag Lane Baths into a vibrant community hub with the launch of a £3.5 million fundraising drive. One of the biggest fundraisers to date was the Big Sleep-Out, where local people braved freezing temperatures to sleep out on the bath’s carpark, helping to raise over £3,830. Among the 11 taking part, were Crewe Mayor Benn Minshall and Andy Morris, Assurant’s Commercial Officer, International Markets and Richard Weddell, Assurant’s Chief Compliance Officer, Europe. Andy, who is campaign chair, said:
“I’m fully committed to the project of making this vision a reality. With the newly-formed charity, ‘Always Ahead’, we’ll transform the locally listed art-deco Flag Lane Baths.
“Crewe residents have placed Flag Lane Baths firmly in their hearts. Feelings of belonging are vital to being part of a community and having a sense of belonging doesn’t just happen. By engaging with the local community, we can actively support participation to deliver programmes that provide young people and the unemployed with opportunities to help them

engage with employment, volunteering and training. Fundraising for the campaign is in full force.” For every person who took part in the Big Sleep-Out, organisers arranged for a homeless person to receive a hot meal and a warm bed for the night, courtesy of The Lighthouse Centre. Richard Weddell added: “The ambition of this charity and the excellent cause for which it was raising money, inspired me to take part. The idea was to have a small, but realistic insight into being homeless – and I feel we most certainly achieved that.
The Flag Lane Baths project is receiving fantastic support from local residents and businesses, Crewe Town Council and Cheshire East Council as well as some national and international organisations. But more help is needed. Whether it’s donating money, time or resources, as many people as possible are urged to volunteer their services and help deliver the project. _

Town joins forces to celebrate Crewe’s rich heritage Exciting plans have been unveiled to make Crewe a more vibrant and attractive place to visit by celebrating, promoting and protecting the town’s proud heritage. Crewe Town Council and its Heritage Working Group have launched a draft consultation strategy to identify the town’s key assets and how they can be used to support the development of a town brand. A key objective of the project is to capture the memories of residents and enhance their sense-of-place and civic pride. They will be asked to state their views and contribute their stories as part of a consultation currently in place. Proposals put forward in the blueprint include: • Restoring historic Christ Church in Prince Albert Street by creating an organisation to raise funds and develop a sustainable use as a unique work space with a Gothic Grade II listed tower • Pursuing Conservation Area Status for significant areas including the ‘railway cottages’ of Dorfold, Betley and Tollitt Streets • A heritage plaque scheme to celebrate and recognise people, places and buildings of significance to Crewe, including British suffragist and women’s rights campaigner Ada Nield Chew who began a career of national political significance with her anonymous letters as a ‘Crewe Factory Girl’ in 1894.

• Creating an app-based ‘Town Trail’ to link areas and places of significance, as well as looking into the use of Virtual Reality to recreate the places which have been lost to new developments. Crewe Mayor Benn Minshall said: “When people think of heritage they often think of old buildings. But heritage is much more.
“It is about the broader history of the place, its people, their cultures, traditions, skills and beliefs.” “The modern town of Crewe, as we understand it today, only came into existence in 1837 when, on July 4, the first train called at the Grand Junction Railway station.” “In the next few decades, Crewe grew meteorically until it was a household name throughout the country and beyond. With that growth came people from near and far, just as they do today. The prospect of HS2 provides new opportunities and challenges and whatever happens, Crewe continues to evolve and change with the times. It always has done. “Heritage can bridge the evolution: It defines and connects our communities, supports well-being, helps drive growth and nurtures our sense-of-place.” Chair of the Town Council’s Operations and Improvements Committee, Cllr Jamie Messent
said: “I am extremely grateful to the volunteers in our Heritage Working Group for their hard work in compiling this draft strategy. We all recognise that we still need valuable input and we look forward to working with our community and our key partners in helping to make it a reality.” Crewe Town Council has allocated a budget Developing a sustainable of £10,000 in 2019/20 for heritage-related activities use of Christ Church as a unique work space will be with further funding one of the aims of Crewe in 2020/21. Funds will Heritage Strategy support the appearance of heritage plaques, information boards and the start of work on an app-based town trail. _

Thousands descended on Crewe for another spectacular night of entertainment marking the launch of another dazzling Lumen lights campaign. It proved a night to remember for families from South Cheshire and beyond who flocked to the town centre to see the new projection show unveiled on Municipal Buildings. More came as it shone out in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Many ‘camped out’ early in the afternoon to get a good spot on Memorial Square and there were gasps of delight as Lumen burst into colour, casting a glow over the town centre and into the night sky. Highlights of the evening also included a stunning lantern parade, colourful funfair, Cat Community Radio music stage, winter food and craft market, fireworks and jaw-dropping displays by a performer suspended over the heads of crowds from a giant helium balloon. Lumen was hailed another huge success by organisers Crewe Town Council as it works to
rebrand the town as a great place to visit with a warm-hearted welcome. Crewe Mayor Benn Minshall said:
“I am proud to see Crewe host such a huge scale event which is only in its second year - and it was quite the night to remember. Lumen is a major month-long investment by Crewe Town Council to attract local residents and visitors; as well as supporting businesses and our local economy.”
served more than 500 people. There was a queue out of the door for fish and chips and the café buzzed. Despite hustle and bustle, Crewe people demonstrated how they look out for one another. They parted to make way for mums and prams and helped wheelchair users to the front of the crowd. Festive spirit was everywhere taking the edge off a bitterly cold night. _

Crewe Lyceum Theatre’s new season is now underway and is packed with an array of show stopping performances guaranteed to fire up the audiences on these cold winter nights. Back in November more than 4,000 people visited the theatre to watch Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers. Over its five day run, the production smashed all Box Office records and well and truly earned its place as the Lyceum’s best-selling week long show ever. Now with an incredible new line up of shows for the New Year, the Lyceum Theatre has once again reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to continue to develop an exciting and wide-ranging programme of shows, featuring the best of the West End, traditional family favourites, ground-breaking dance productions and hard-hitting drama as part of its extensive list. In March, the spine-tingling The Woman in Black comes direct from the West End, along with Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story in July, which plays Crewe as part of its 30th Anniversary tour. In May, gothic masterpiece Jane Eyre will give a moving and unforgettable portrayal of one woman’s quest for equality and freedom remaining one of the all-time great triumphs of storytelling to this day. Priding itself in being a unique venue at the heart of the community, the theatre hosts Sunday Night at the Lyceum in February. Partnered with The Cat Radio, the evening will showcase the very best in local talent and raise money for Leighton Hospital’s charity (MCHCT). Also during February and March there will be a two month programme of live stage work, screenings, talks, social events and exhibitions to celebrate LGBT History Month and International Women’s Day. This also includes the return of Platform Theatre’s Ada to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Crewe’s famous suffragist Ada Nield Chew. On 3-4 March the theatre will proudly welcome multiaward-winning Gary Clarke Company for the first time with Wasteland. Created to mark the 25th anniversary of the demolition of Grimethorpe Colliery in South Yorkshire and 30 years since the rise of UK rave culture, acclaimed choreographer Gary Clarke presents this thrilling yet deeply touching dance theatre production. In 1994, Gary joined family, friends and neighbours to witness the downfall of Grimethorpe Colliery, an act of ruination that not only marked another nail in the coffin of Britain’s mining industry but also added to the destruction of the working class community that surrounded it. Wasteland looks at how two different generations coped in this turbulent era of radical upheaval as industrial Britain fell and a new sub-culture emerged. Talking about the show Gary said: “For our generation, the future was very bleak with very little prospect. The rave culture gave many of us the opportunity to escape these grim and grey realities and into a new world of music and dance where we could express our inner feelings, desires and frustrations. My passion for dance grew from this discovery.” Rare archive film footage brings the era to life capturing both the tragedy of mining’s last days and the exhilaration of rave’s roots - along with a powerful rave soundtrack by Charles Webber and unique art work by Jimmy Cauty, co-founder of The KLF. Bringing all this together into one unforgettable and compelling night of dance theatre, Wasteland dives head first into a hedonistic story of loss, hope, escapism and survival. _

Chamber joins in Crewe branding exercise encapsulate this and all that is good about Crewe. Together they aim to develop a positive ‘place brand’ which attracts new families, workers, students and visitors. The project, which will run into 2020, will produce a common set of goals to pinpoint strategic investment and influence policy and decision-making. Assisting the project leaders are an award-winning team of urban designers from London-based HemingwayDesign, acclaimed for their regeneration and place brands for cities and towns including York, Middlesbrough and Blackburn. Crewe Town Council leader Jill Rhodes said: Words: Jan Roberts Pic: Peter Robinson
People are being urged to help shape Crewe’s future as part of an exciting branding project which aims to stamp on the negative and build on the positive aspects of the town. A survey has been completed for South Cheshire residents of all ages, and from all walks to life, to play a role in creating a positive vibe about Crewe as a good place to live, invest and spend leisure time. They have been asked to express their views, good and bad, on what sets the town apart – its strengths and its weaknesses and how the town can work together to regain civic pride and show off its good points to the rest of the country.
Many of these views were expressed when over 100 local people gathered for the launch of Crewe Place Branding project at Crewe Alexandra Stadium. While keen to air views on the demise of the town centre and its retail offering, several people stood up to talk about the ‘heart’ of Crewe – its hard-working and friendly people whose generosity of spirit shines through in times of adversity. Support for old folk caught up in the Beechmere fire and various fundraising appeals for local causes and children and facilities at Leighton Hospital were examples. The project, led by Crewe Town Council in partnership with Cheshire East Council and South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, aims to
“Crewe is full of proud people with kind hearts. You only have to look at their generosity following the Beechmere fire. The branding project aims to spread a sense of belonging and build on that pride and strengthen our community.” Rail heritage, excellence in engineering, historic landmarks like the Lyceum Theatre were highlighted by local people at the launch as well as start-up businesses that had flourished after making Crewe their home.
Record numbers take part in Leighton’s Merry Mile event A Merry Mile fundraiser to help build a baby bereavement suite at Leighton Hospital proved a runaway success, thanks to support from Chamber members Alpha Omega Securities in Crewe. More than 170 people of all ages, including mums and babies and people in wheelchairs, turned out on a frosty morning to make their way round Queen’s Park, Crewe in support of the £100,000 Lost Little Ones’ appeal. Alpha Omega security personnel acted as stewards and joined with Crewe and Nantwich Lions in handing out hot drinks and mince pies. Proceeds are being totted up but together with donations and money from Just Giving pages set up by supporters, MCH charity officials hope to put more than £2000 into the appeal pot. Funds will go towards building an extension to the maternity unit where grief-stricken parents can spend quiet time away from the rest of the labour ward in a non-clinical environment after suffering the devastating loss of a baby.

Alpha Omega owner Ken Lawton said:
“I was overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of people taking part. It was freezing but they turned out in force to run, jog or walk round the route. They brought their children and dogs and really got into the festive spirit wearing Santa hats. Their community spirit was a joy to see and we were delighted to be part of such a special day in Crewe.” The company, which provides

successful entrepreneurs and companies that will enjoy being located close to local amenities and transport access. It is a really exciting time for the area as we look forward to the larger projects for the Town Marketplace coming to fruition. A high-class community hub The building, Breeden House on Edleston Road, has been recently fully refurbished to an extremely high standard. There are an impressive 20 office spaces located across two floors with a concierge on the ground floor. The new super fast high speed broadband being installed will naturally attract digital, tech and creative businesses who are just starting up or need to grow into a larger space. That’s not to say that a diverse mix of businesses won’t benefit from the connectivity and connections that the building offers, it is a perfect hub for all types of growing companies who can share ideas and collaborate with their neighbours. If travel for businesses is a necessity, then a trip to London, for example, is only a ten minute walk to the station and they can be on the platform of London Euston in less than two hours. Or if travelling by car then the M6 motorway is only a fifteen minute journey to start their route to the northern powerhouses of Manchester & Liverpool.
Alexander says:
“We already have a diverse mix of existing tenants ranging from a local MP to Emerging Futures, experts in training and consultancy in health and social care, criminal justice and substance misuse services. The available office space spans 11 units and 7,304 sq ft, providing flexibility for growing businesses. There are 4 shops on the ground floor waiting for new tenants to be introduced. “I’ve enjoyed the companionship, exercise and everything else that comes with dog sitting. I’d definitely recommend Barking Mad to others, as it’s brought bundles of furry joy into my home.”

Businesses to benefit from Keele expertise Businesses and organisations in South Cheshire are being invited to benefit from the talented students and expert academics at Keele University. Through degree and higher apprenticeships, organisations are able to engage their staff in academically rigorous but job relevant studies. The University is proud to be working closely with employers to fully understand what knowledge and skills they require from graduates, ensuring that the workforce of tomorrow is equipped with the attributes required to succeed. Stakeholder collaboration, co-creation and codelivery of academic and development programmes is now commonplace at Keele and is being driven forward by the Employability and Employer Engagement Team within the Keele Institute for Innovation in Teaching Excellence (KIITE). Through Keele’s collaborative apprenticeship programmes, local organisations are able to benefit from the apprenticeship levy whilst also developing their workforce capacity and capability. The University’s Senior Leader Apprenticeship MBA programme, launched in 2019, currently has almost 50 existing and aspiring leaders taking part from a wide range of organisations – private, public, charity and not-for-profit. Applications are now being accepted for the 2020 cohorts commencing in February and September. The MBA was designed and built with an employer focus and features a breadth of modules to support the dynamic attributes required of senior leaders in today’s climate; delivered via a flexible model of short blocks and independent and online learning, facilitating engagement of senior staff. Assessments are integrated into the workplace, simultaneously benefiting the individual and business. Other apprenticeships available at Keele University include Data Scientist and Advanced Clinical Practitioner and Nursing programmes, and Keele is constantly co-designing new programmes with employers, having most-recently welcomed input into its Research Scientist apprenticeship, collaboratively-designed to support technical staff with leadership responsibilities. _
