INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Welcome
to the Chamber’s new magazine ‘SOUTH CHESHIRE CHAMBER BUSINESS’. It’s a different name, formally called ‘4FRONT’, however it will continue to provide news and views from the Chamber, and across the area. We’ve produced a local business magazine for over 17 years and looking back at previous front covers (P.8) it’s easy to forget the significant change that has taken place in this area over the years. This includes new roads and bypasses, housing, business parks and colleges. In truth regeneration never stops, and on the front cover we see the plans set for Royal Arcade, that will hopefully trigger a revival in the vibrancy of the town centre that is much needed (P.6). The area has had a number of false dawns, but hopefully this scheme will receive the support it needs to make it happen. The success of the town centre will not just revolve around one new scheme, it will involve a number of factors including infrastructure, connectivity with the new station and housing schemes, therefore the Chamber will continue to lobby for this type of investment on behalf of its members. To attract new visitors to the town and the surrounding area, Crewe must start to develop a vibrant brand that encapsulates all that is good about South Cheshire. The Chamber in partnership with the Town Council has begun to develop the town’s brand by holding a roundtable discussion with key stakeholders focusing on creating a brand to help attract inward investment and boost economic growth (p.34). It is only the beginning of this journey, but there is tremendous enthusiasm from all stakeholders that we have plenty to shout about regarding this area. The Chamber continues to be busy with plenty of activity supporting the local business community as you will see throughout this magazine. I hope you enjoy this magazine and if your organisation has good news to share or you’d like to take advantage of the advertising opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact Jon at the Chamber. May I take this opportunity to wish your business every success in the future.

Regeneration plans for Crewe town centre take step forward with sign-up of cinema operator Regeneration plans for Crewe town centre have taken a step forward with the announcement that Empire Cinemas has agreed terms for a new state-of-the-art eight-screen multiplex. The 800-seat cinema will be centre-piece of the Royal Arcade scheme, which Peveril Securities and their development managers, Cordwell Property Group, have been working on since being selected as Cheshire East Council’s preferred development partners last year. Justin Ribbons, of Empire Cinemas, said: “We are delighted to announce our plans for a new cinema in Crewe. Our main screen will feature a hi-tech ‘impact’ screen showing the latest blockbuster movie to 230 customers seated in luxury seats, including some in a new sofa format. Our 17-seater ‘D Box’ will be one of the first in the UK where the moviegoers’ reclining seats react to the action on screen.
“We are the leading independently-owned cinema chain in the UK, with 14 locations. We share the ambitious plans of the council and the developer for the regeneration of Crewe town centre and believe that our cinema can play a
Cordwell Property Group has confirmed that it is advanced talks with other occupiers in the Royal Arcade scheme. Cordwell spokesman William Warrack said: “We have had strong interest from another leisure operator and expect to be able to make a further announcement in the coming weeks. We’re also in discussion with a number of restaurant operators, who are keen to have a presence in Crewe, reflecting the growth of the town and current lack of restaurants in the locality.” Councillor Ainsley Arnold, Cheshire East Council’s cabinet member for planning, housing and regeneration, said: “This is great news for Crewe and only the start of delivering the council’s ambitious programme to regenerate the town centre which, along with HS2, will truly transform Crewe as a place to live, work and visit.

“The council will continue working hard with the developer to deliver the full investment programme, with more exciting news to be announced soon.” “Alongside investment from Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership, the council will be supporting the costs of the public elements of the scheme, including the new bus station, multi-storey car park and public realm.” Peveril and Cordwell have also released new images of their plans for the overall redevelopment, which will form part of their planning application next year. Mr Warrack said: “We have been working closely with the council and Empire to create some exciting designs, which are unique to Crewe.
We’ll also be working with other stakeholders, such as Cheshire College SW, to ensure that, during the construction of the scheme, we involve local people and give them opportunities to learn and take part in the work.“ We’ve just launched a website for the project, which provides more information for local residents and businesses. This will be updated as our plans progress and we welcome feedback and suggestions as to how we can work in partnership with the local community.“
We are expecting to finalise plans over the coming months and commence works on site late summer 2019. Whilst this is later than originally planned, we are confident that we can move forward at pace and deliver a completed scheme by summer 2021.” _ For more information please visit: www.royalarcadecrewe.co.uk

CHAMBER NEWS / THE PRESIDENT’S PAGE
AGM rounds off another busy year One of my formal roles as President is to preside over the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting and it is amazing how quickly these occasions seem to come around. Whilst not one of the highest profile events, the AGM is nevertheless an important statutory meeting, which gives the Chamber the opportunity to update Members on its activities and performance during the previous year and to deal with matters of Governance. This year’s AGM was held at the Crewe Arms Hotel and once again, Members received comprehensive reports from the Chairman and the Chief Executive covering the range of activities undertaken during the year. The meeting also agreed a new procedure for electing new directors to the Board. The Chambers Auditors, Afford Bond, were represented by Gary Greer, who presented the accounts for the year and it was also fitting for the opportunity to be taken to pay tribute to the late Jonathan Curwen who had performed the role for a number of years. On another front, it was also a great pleasure and privilege to attend a recent ceremony at Electra House on Crewe Business Park where Boyd Consultants were presented with the Queens Award for Enterprise in International Trade (P.24).
Professor Alan Boyd, left, with Chamber President John Dunning
Boyd Consultants are renowned for supporting small pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and medical departments at Universities across the globe to translate their research ideas into medicines to treat human diseases. A fantastic company and one that we should be proud to have as a local business as their achievements help to improve many people’s lives around the world.
Professor Alan Boyd, CEO and founder of the company received the award from David Briggs, the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire. As we approach the busy Christmas period, I am looking forward to once again representing the Chamber at the local Remembrance Day Service and of course to attending the Annual Business Awards.
4Front through the years South Cheshire of Commerce has kept members and the local community in the know with the latest business news for over 20 years of publishing 4Front magazine. Now we are delighted to introduce our new-look magazine - a fresh design but still packed with great articles celebrating all that is great and good about the local business community. Here’s a flashback to some of the front cover splashes over the past 10 years.

‘HS2 still top of the agenda’ – members told South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce has reaffirmed its aims to drive forward growth with HS2 playing a pivotal role in the push for prosperity. The Chamber is continuing to press for news on Crewe’s future as a high speed rail hub supported by large local employers on its Business Council and key stakeholders from the public and private sector. Members attending the Chamber’s AGM heard more on the campaign which urges the Government to get on with transforming the existing Crewe station into a ultra-modern hub offering fast travel to London and with a northern junction for speedy services to Manchester and up to Scotland. Earlier this year the Chamber organised a petition which won strong support from key local employers and neighbouring Chambers of Commerce. It called on the Department of Transport to support the regeneration of Crewe by restoring it to its former glory as the epicentre of rail travel. The campaign took a positive turn in March when Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced commitment to modifying HS2 Phase 2a to support construction of the Crewe Hub. Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman said: “The benefits of HS2 to Crewe, and the entire North West region, in terms of inward investment and job creation, are well documented. “We continue to lobby on a national level and await further news on the transformation of the existing station into a high speed hub. Meanwhile we welcome the positive steps being made towards the regeneration of Crewe town centre. “We were delighted to hear that a leading cinema chain has agreed terms for a new venue
in the heart of Crewe, as the centre piece of the Royal Arcade redevelopment. “Good news such as this supports efforts to change the perception of Crewe and we continue to work closely with Crewe Town Council on branding the town as a good place to live, invest and spend leisure time.” The annual meeting, staged at the Crewe Arms hotel, updated members on Chamber engagement with various public bodies including Cheshire East Council, the Skills and Growth Company and the Cheshire & Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership. The South Cheshire Chamber, as member of the British Chambers of Commerce, has spoken up for the area on important issues including business rates, mobile connectivity and international trade. Membership of the organisation is up by 10%, with member businesses employing more than 19,000 people. International trade plays a key area of the Chamber’s day-to-day activities with more than 60 local exporters supported with documents and advice. This year the number of export documents processed by the Chamber was 1,500 - an increase of 50%, members were told. This had a value of more than £200m and underlines the global demand for locallyproduced products and services including cars, food and clothing. Meanwhile the Chamber is working with the Crewe and Nantwich Twinning Association to build links with the business communities in twin towns in Poland, France and Germany.

Q. If you could live anywhere is the world, where would it be and why? Geneva or Vancouver. Combination of four real seasons, mountains and water, and an international atmosphere.
Q. Bentley is famed worldwide for its craftsmanship and quality, what is your vision for the brand? As electrification and connectivity technology accelerates in our sector, we see a clear opportunity to bring this together with the traditional competencies of Bentley in a unique way. As technology interfaces become more intuitive, for example natural language driven, the environment and functionality of the car becomes even more important. We see ourselves as leaders in this space.
Q. What is your greatest achievement to date? I let others comment on that, I just enjoy growing businesses and fixing complex problems through teams that inspire me.
Q. What was your previous role? Group Strategy Director at Jaguar Land Rover, Executive Committee. Q. What was your first car and what do you drive now? My first car was a Mini Clubman 1969. Now I drive a Bentley Bentayga W12. Q. Bentley is based in Crewe where exciting regeneration is planned, what are your hopes for the future of the town? I first worked at Bentley between 1999-2005 and saw a huge change then. Coming back now it is even more obvious that the town has developed further and not just because of Bentley. With the HS2 link, UTC Crewe, and the development of more capacity and high tech jobs at Bentley, I can see a future boost beyond what has happened in the past 20 years. We are proud to be a driving force in this development. Q. How does being based in Crewe benefit the company? As a 99 year old business, 80 of those years have been based here, and the depth of skills, commitment and multi generation families that have grown in the company makes us unique in the industry. From a customer perspective, even in areas such as China, the origins of the brand and the skills we have nurtured are of huge importance to the purchase decision. It is a large part of our added value as a brand. Q. What do you like to do in your spare time? I cycle, and travel at weekends.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Q. What is your favourite food? Italian food, in Italy.
Q. Tell us about your role and responsibilities I have the privilege of leading the Bentley business as Chairman and CEO with a clear mandate to significantly grow the brand.

Nantwich based FJ Need (Foods) Ltd recently attended one such course. As suppliers of dairy products to the manufacturing food service and wholesale sectors of the UK market, they are now branching out overseas and realised that they didn’t have the necessary internal expertise under one roof. They turned to International Trade Manager, Jacqui Morris at the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce. Jacqui said “I was able to advise what documents they would need but realised
that an understanding of why the documents are required would develop best practise”. After researching what the business activities will be we going forward, the Chamber was able to create a training course to suit their needs. The delegates chose to have the course held at the Chamber premises but the training can be hosted at your own business premises. The day was a resounding success and the delegates went away happy and well informed on the Export process relevant for their business. Nicole Hassall, Sales Executive of FJ Need (Foods) Ltd Said “Five members of our business recently embarked on the ‘Understanding the Export Process Course’, as new members of the Chamber we found the course extremely insightful, helpful and informative. All of our questions were answered in an understandable way, and the course was able to be tailored to our business needs. Cheshire East Council has published its Pre-Budget Consultation Report for 2019 to 2022. Set against a backdrop of increasing demand and rising costs, the report sets out proposals on the council’s financial plans as to how services will be delivered for the period from April 1 2019 through to March 31 2020. Along with almost every other local authority, Cheshire East is facing a particularly challenging financial position with the reduction of central government funding to balance the position for the next three years. The council is inviting the opinions and views from residents, businesses, councillors, staff, town and parish councils, local community groups and other stakeholders. The feedback received will be used to inform the budget setting process. Councillor Paul Bates, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for finance and communications, said: “In response to the difficult ongoing national funding situation and demographic change, the council is firmly committed to protecting the delivery of essential frontline services for children and families, adult social care and for our most vulnerable residents. “But we must also look at our priorities and where we can make savings and operate more efficiently. This might mean that some existing services provided will be reduced or delivered in a different way in the future.
“We are fortunate here in Cheshire East that the local economy is strong and growing. We have to ensure communities feel the benefit of that economic growth for the longer term and that is why we are working for a brighter future together with our residents and partners”.
_ To have your say, please go to: cheshireeast.gov. uk/budget The consultation runs until 14 December and findings will be considered before the final budget is agreed by full council on 21 February 2019.

Start saving towards a deposit on a house and, once you’ve bought a house, consider taking out protection against critical illness so that you are covered if you fall sick, and protection against loss of income, so that you are covered if you lose your job. Also, start saving into your pension pot. IN YOUR
50s In your 50s…
As your retirement date draws near, you may want to look at switching your pension funds into lower-risk investments so that you’re less affected by unexpected market shocks. You will have some important decisions to take about your pension in this decade so make sure that you investigate the pension freedom rules and explore the different ways of drawing down on your pension pot.
Female professionals who dream of a comfortable and secure financial future need a financial plan, says Jo Clarke, Northwich Practice Director at Close Brothers Asset Management. She says: “I might be a practice director at a financial advisory firm, but when it comes to planning ahead, I’m just like everyone else. “Day-to-day life is busy, so sometimes it’s hard to find the time and space I need to focus on this essential activity.

Keep reviewing your retirement planning on an annual basis, as your disposable income increases, and explore other options for tax relief to make sure your savings and investments are working as hard as possible. Consider the level of risk you are taking with your investments.
You may have children in this decade – in which case you might want to increase your critical illness and income protection cover, take out life insurance and make a will. Another consideration is whether you want to open junior ISA accounts for your offspring. Keep saving for retirement during your 30s as the effect of compounding will increase by starting early.
IN YOUR

Top Tips for planning for the long term
In your 60s and beyond…
Even if you have retired – and even if you haven’t – you should still be making financial plans. Financial planning is a continuous process and the good news is that you may have more time to put into it now than you did earlier in your life. Start thinking about how you would pay for long term care, should be that be necessary in future, and how you can pass on your wealth to the next generation in the most tax efficient manner.
Please remember that investments can fall as well as rise and you could get back less thank your original investment. Tax benefits are dependent on your own personal circumstances and are subject to change.
“If you don’t know where to start the financial planning process, a good place is with protection. The reason for this is that if you were to lose your job, or become too ill to work, you might struggle to afford your mortgage, save for retirement or make any other plans for the future. “You can take advice on many different aspects of financial planning, from critical illness cover and income protection, through to ISAs, pensions, saving for children and grandchildren,
planning for inheritance tax and drawing up a will. “Seeking out a qualified professional to advise you will not only save you time, and make the process less intimidating, it could also save you hundreds of thousands of pounds over the course of your lifetime.”

Celebrate, Eat, Play, Ride, Repeat Ten eventful years celebrated, 800 cupcakes devoured, seven benefits vendors hosted, over 2,000 pieces of fruit eaten and over 900 people welcomed to the second annual Assurant Family Fun day. These are some of the highlights from what was an extremely busy summer for Assurant. 10 years ago, Assurant moved offices to the Crewe Business Park, which is home to its European head office and approximately 900 employees. A lot has changed in that time and the Crewe office celebrated this milestone anniversary with cupcakes, a benefits fair and their second annual employee Family Fun day.

Employee wellbeing is hugely important to Assurant and as part of the celebrations the company hosted a benefits fair. To promote the benefits fair, and to support a healthy balanced diet, 2,000 pieces of fruit were distributed on the day of the event. Assurant welcomed external vendors who explained the benefits they offered, along with internal experts who provided valuable
information about their award-winning employee referral programme ‘Talent Spotters’ and other popular employee benefits. To build on the success of last year’s Family Fun day, the team started work on the 2018 event back in July 2017. “Engaging with those who attended last year’s Family Fun day was very important to us. We were able to find out exactly what was needed to take this year’s event to the next level. This year’s fun day was an enormous success and

Employers, staff and industry professionals attended the launch of Cheshire College – South & West’s risual Microsoft Academy, an initiative that will provide Microsoft accredited digital training for learners and local employers to equip them and their staff with the skills and knowledge they require in the workplace. The new collaboration between the College, risual and Microsoft aims to embrace the digital revolution and link employers with learners. The digital training centre contains the latest Microsoft technology and will be used to train internal and external staff, access digital apprenticeships and provide industry qualifications. Paul Edge, Microsoft Learning Consultant said: “Our aim as a company is to empower people to achieve more and this is what we are
hoping to accomplish with the Academy. Through digital literacy we want to empower people within the College, both learners and staff, and arm them with the skills they need for the future.” Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal/ Deputy Chief Executive at Cheshire College – South & West, added: “The Academy idea was born out of a conversation some 12 months ago with our Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Representative, Mark Livesey. We discussed how we can respond to the digital world, and agreed we needed to invest time and effort in the right areas by creating a digital hub with the aim of sharing knowledge and information. “It is a critical time for any organisation as the pace of change in the world of digital and technology continues to accelerate. We want to
prepare our learners so that they have the skills they need for when they begin the next stage of their career. “We are engaging with employers nationally and locally to understand specific needs and prepare our learners accordingly. It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity, which we hope will soon have an impact in the anytime, anywhere learning forum.” Leading IT consultants, risual, have been transforming organisations with technology for over ten years, providing market leading consulting, managed services and solutions in IT. risual have experienced first-hand the difficulty in bridging the digital skills gap between education and in the work place. Richard Proud, Co-Founder and Director of risual, said: “We have built this risual Microsoft Academy with the aim of affecting young people’s lives in a more positive way. “Through the Academy we have created a learning environment that is more aligned to the skills employers are looking for, essentially connecting people in the right way and reducing the digital skills gap we have witnessed directly in the market.” _ For more information on the risual Microsoft Academy and details on how you can benefit, visit www.ccsw.ac.uk or call the College hotline on 01270 654654.

From British wildlife to body armour, innovative ideas are growing businesses across Cheshire How do you get your email inbox down to zero? Will holding woodlice, snails and mice teach children the science curriculum? Can you bring comic book characters to life with leather armour? These are just some of the questions explored on Manchester Met’s SMART Cheshire Innovation Challenge, a 12-week programme to help micro and small to medium-sized businesses in Cheshire and Warrington develop their ideas and grow. Fully funded by the European Union European Regional Development Fund, SMART Cheshire gives starts-ups and SMEs the opportunity to access Manchester Met’s academic expertise, share experiences with like-minded entrepreneurs, and critically explore new ideas. The programme is a combination of practical workshops, group sessions and one-to-one coaching, all with the focus on the entrepreneurs’ businesses. Innovation comes in many forms – from apps to e-commerce websites to new product ranges – but it’s rarely easy to stop and think about an idea and its viability, and that’s what makes a programme like SMART Cheshire so exciting. It allows entrepreneurs to step out of the day-to-day and look at their business from
a different angle. To question whether their idea for a new product really does respond to customers’ problems. To consider whether they have the skills to implement a new process or service. To evaluate whether their idea fits with their business vision. And those questions previously discussed by participants? Say cheers to ‘The Mighty Stout!’ Brewery bosses are raising a glass to Mornflake after launching a new ale made with hearty oats. Owners of Tom’s Tap micro-brewery in Crewe turned to the historic Cheshire millers for a key ingredient in their newly-launched stout. And the firm, which supplies its oat-based breakfast products around the world, was only too happy to oblige! Now ‘The Mighty Stout’ is set to make an appearance on the menu in Tom’s Tap and behind the bar in local pubs. Whole Jumbo Oats, best known for making a tasty textured porridge, are one of the main ingredients in the brew. Brewery owners Sean and Jacqui Ayling have included traditional malts and other ‘secret’ ingredients in the stout which will feature on their tap room menu from October 18. The couple opened the business on Thomas Street three months ago after working for more than 30 years in the hospitality industry as bartenders. They expect The Mighty Stout to go down well with regulars. Sean said: “Stout is a strong dark beer which is full of iron and has an age-old reputation for ‘building you up’ after illness and was once recommended to pregnant women. “By adding oats we pack the drink with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They also add body and create a silky texture.

We have the country’s finest miller on our doorstep in Crewe – Mornflake. “The location is perfect as we are keen to reduce ‘food miles’ and include only the freshest of ingredients. “We love the heritage of the company which uses milling techniques handed down 15 generations and its commitment to the farming industry by sourcing only British oats. “It’s also a family-owned company employing local people which sits with our aims of becoming a community hub where clubs and societies can meet. “We are lucky to have a company with such provenance just a mile away from us on Thomas Street.” More than 60% of the drinks on offer at Tom’s Tap are brewed on the premises including the new Baltic Porter with Morello Cherries at 7.4%, NZ Steam Beer, made with New Zealand hops, 5.2% and zesty Lemon Witbier, 4.3%. The Mighty Stout, which comes in at a mid-range 4.8%, will be available in sturdy brown bottles from November. the creative way they include them in recipes. “Stout is a first for us and we are delighted to supply to a local family-owned business. “We look forward to seeing it in bottles labelled ‘The Mighty Stout,’ paying homage to the wholesome goodness of our Cheshire milled oats.” _ For more information on Mornflake products visit www.mornflake.com

Boyds presented with Queen’s Award for Enterprise Boyds, a leading consultancy business supporting the development of pharmaceutical and biotech products and devices for patient benefit, has been presented with one of the UK’s most prestigious business awards – The Queen’s Award for Enterprise, International Trade for Outstanding Short-Term Growth in overseas sales for the last three years. Boyds was awarded the accolade by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, Mr David Briggs, MBE, KStJ, in an official visit to Electra House, Crewe Business Park - the company’s Cheshire office. Founder and CEO, Professor Alan Boyd, received a Grant of Appointment and commemorative crystal bowl in recognition of the company’s growth and commercial success in international trade, and specifically for the company’s work in gene therapy. Around 40 guests attended the evening event, including staff, clients and contacts of Boyds as well as the Mayor of Crewe and the High Sheriff of Cheshire. Boyds was established 13 years ago and now employs 20 members of staff and consultants working out of its offices in Cheshire and Cambridgeshire. Working with small pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well as medical departments at universities, the team at Boyds helps to translate research ideas into medicines to treat human diseases. The business provides a range of expertise and skills central to the
development of these medicinal products. Boyds’ expert assistance also helps to expedite the development of medicines, adding value to these products, and helping businesses reach key milestones in their drug development projects. Working in a highly regulated global industry, Boyds has grown its overseas sales by two thirds in the last three years with profits more than doubling. Boyds’ success in winning the Award also means it can fly the Queen’s Award flag at its premises in Crewe and feature the emblem on its marketing materials.
Professor Alan Boyd said: “It is a great privilege to have a globally-recognised royal stamp of approval, particularly as around 60% of our revenue now comes from businesses based outside the UK. “We have a clear vision moving forward to continue to use our knowledge and expertise to help our global clients to develop products for the benefit of patients.” _ For more information visit www.boydconsultants.com

New course tackles stress in the work place Statistics released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that 526,000 workers suffered from work related stress, depression or anxiety in 2016/17, with 12.5m working days lost. In response to this and the growing need for having trained Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) in the workplace, local Health and Safety Training provider / Consultancy Live For Work has launched its first course centred around the mental health and well-being of workers, designed to teach people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first-aid basis. Business owner Claire Dalton said: “There is a legal requirement to manage stress in the workplace; mental health affects most of us in some way, and it’s important that we work to eliminate the stigma around mental health and encourage people to reach out if they are struggling. “I established Live for Work 12 years ago, initially to provide First Aid training; since then we have expanded into other areas of health and safety, including consultancy services and H&S management training. During this time I have noticed the impact that trying to juggle long working hours with pressures at home has had on workers’ mental health; the MHFA course has opened up my eyes to the much broader spectrum of mental health issues that almost
everyone will experience at some time. Poor mental health can ultimately cause physiological, behavioural and psychological effects that can lead to a whole range of physical health conditions.
“Our aim is both to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health” “Our aim is both to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health; but also, to use our experience and knowledge of working within a wide range of industry sectors to assist organisations to set up a sustainable programme that enables their MH First Aiders to help their workforce. Promotion of well-being in the workplace is known to help reduce absenteeism and, to some extent ‘presenteeism’ (turning up to work but not functioning at full capacity). “The course is proving exceptionally popular to date which we hope is indicative of the recognition that this very important and prevalent issue is now receiving.” _ If you would like to learn more, contact Claire Dalton: claire@liveforwork.co.uk or visit www.liveforwork.co.uk

Nantwich has made the small town category its own over the years and judges are expected to make their announcement soon. A buzzing place where people can meet and eat just like they do in Borough Market London and European markets.” He added: “People of Crewe unite and raise your spirits. Crewe Place branding workshop highlights town’s strengths
Crewe will dazzle throughout the festive period with a spectacular array of light shows bringing a modern twist to the Christmas countdown. The season begins on November 23 when this year’s Christmas Lights switch-on event will see the launch of a mesmerising winter fairy story projected onto Municipal Building as a new month-long attraction. The full-size projection will be the main feature of LUMEN - Crewe’s Night of Lights when the town will unveil a sparkling array of attractions. Organisers at Crewe Town Council say its heart-warming tale of love set against the backdrop of a ‘snowy Victorian Crewe’ will delight people of all ages and prove the perfect start to the season of goodwill. Family entertainment gets underway at 5pm and includes a magical lantern parade from Lyceum Square to Memorial Square where Mayor of Crewe, Cllr Brian Roberts, will switch on the Christmas lights at 6.30pm. Another new feature will be PEAL- a laser-triggered emulation of a church bell tower blending state-of-the-art technology with 300 year-old ringing patterns. Based at Christ Church, the art installation will offer visitors a chance to ‘ring’ bells by cutting beams of light with their hands.
Visitors will also be wowed by Spark! – a street feature show featuring ethereal characters dancing and drumming to a kaleidoscopic lighting design. A winter market on Lyceum Square will offer a food and a wide range of festive gifts as well as a chance for children to meet Santa in his grotto. Crewe’s Memorial Square will be lit by the magical glow of woodland creatures, giant flowers, luminous stars and ice drops and a ‘Fox Lady’ puppet will delight children with walkabout performances around the town centre. The Town Council has worked with a range of partners to ensure Christmas has extra sparkle this year and plans to thrill visitors with eyecatching features never seen in Crewe before. Support has come from Cheshire East Council, Crewe Lyceum Theatre, Crewe Library, TheCat 107.9FM, The Market, Design Office, ArtReach, Double Take Projection, Same Sky, Bltiz Fireworks, Air Products, Prestige Motors Crewe, Crewe Engineering & Design UTC and ABC Childcare Services Crewe. Cllr Marilyn Houston, Chair of the Town Development Committee, said: “I am very excited that LUMEN – Crewe’s Night of Lights will be the curtain-raiser for the festive season in Crewe. “The Christmas Lights switch on will be bigger and brighter this year with these exciting

Cheshire Fire and Rescue service launch of 12 month sprinkler campaign Fire officials have received a fantastic response following a joint Final Friday event with the Chamber. A presentation showing how sprinklers save both lives and business was delivered by Jon Bryan (Primary Authority Officer) followed by a road traffic collision demonstration delivered by Watch Manager Rob Carney and his crews. The event showcased the continued work Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) delivers to prevent business fires along with showing the work carried out by operational crews attending road incidents working with other emergency services. Feedback during and after the event was excellent, with many businesses asking for information on how sprinklers could be installed into their premises. September saw CFRS launch the Sprinklers Save Lives campaign to highlight the importance of sprinklers and suppression systems in both commercial and domestic properties. The campaign underlines how sprinklers prevent fire from spreading, give vital survival time for occupants of a building to escape and drive down death and injury from fire. Tracey Carter, the Service’s Business Safety Manager, explains: “Engaging with businesses
Business Safety volunteer Bob Briscoe, Business Safety Advocates Conner Lafferty and Vicky Mewis along with Business Safety Manager Tracey Carter who are here to help businesses in South Cheshire to stay safe from fire. and building relationships is an excellent way to deliver important safety messages, break down barriers and build a rapport with business owners/managers or other partners. “The Business Safety team members regularly visit businesses to offer support, advice and signpost people to key information on the website.
“We always aim to help businesses to comply with the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety Order) 2005 (“the Fire Safety Order”) and take every opportunity to discuss other key elements such as having a business continuity plan. “Sprinklers are a brilliant way to extinguish fire but also help to ensure there is no loss of business, in fact, for those businesses unlucky enough to experience a fire, with sprinklers they could be back up and running again within 48 hours.” The Fire Safety Order applies to virtually all premises and covers nearly every type of building, structure, and open space, for example offices and shops, premises that provide care, community halls, common areas of houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), pubs, clubs and restaurants, schools, hotels, factories and warehouses. _ For more information about the work of the Business Safety team or to book a place on the next sprinkler demonstration/workshop contact tracey.carter@cheshirefire.gov.uk
New group goes from strength to strength The new Rotary Club of Wych Malbank was formally chartered as the fifth Rotary Club in the Crewe/Nantwich area. Following in the footsteps of the Bentley Rotary Club which began in 2016 the new club takes on a very different look from the older, more traditional clubs in the area. Its objectives are fundraising, networking and having fun. Meeting for just one hour every Wednesday at 7.30am three times a month and once a month at 5.30pm the club asks only for £10 per month subscription. Refreshments are provided by Richmond Village who are the hosts and members. The club which was formally chartered on September 5 with 24 members, 12 male and 12 female, all working in the area with one objective to serve the local and international community by raising money whist networking and having fun. The astonishing element of this club is how quickly it came together in 12 weeks which is a record for the Rotary District 1180. This enthusiasm is a tribute to the business community in the South Cheshire area who have joined. The charter ceremony at Richmond Village was performed by district governor Steve Martin and past district governor Beryl Cotton at an event attended by the Mayor of Nantwich David Marren with over 50 guests.

The club has already received £4000 in recognition of work it has done in conjunction with its sponsor Nantwich Rotary Club. Planned events include a wine tasting evening which sold out within 48 hours, a plastic recycling project for Nantwich and providing assistance to its sponsor club for its Christmas float activities.

Chamber member Graham Witter is busy organising another dazzling display of Christmas lights to raise money for The Donna Louise, a children and young people’s hospice which provided respite care and family support to his late, disabled sister Jessica. The Pride of Crewe winner and Community Champion has raised a staggering £65,550 for the hospice, since he started decorating the Weston family home in 2013. This year he hopes to create an even brighter and bigger display throughout December. The family house, farm buildings and garden will be transformed into a festive winter wonderland with a visit from Santa every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening, with the perfect opportunity for your own sleigh selfie! Visitors will also have the chance to look inside Santa’s Grotto, listen to festive music, try a delicious mince pie and enjoy their own #festiveicecream. Graham, 24, said: “I feel very proud to have developed a great working relationship with our
local business community and my popular familyfundraising event. Many local organisations are supporting and sponsoring my festive fundraiser, but their on-going support also helps me to continue this Christmas light display in memory of my sister. “At this year’s event, visitors will see many hundred lights added to the display, which will include animated acrylic characters and LED lights featuring ‘Rudolph the Reindeer’. There will also be an opportunity for your own Christmas selfie-board photoshoot, so every family can take a memory back home. “Whitby Morrison is continuing to serve #festiveicecream this year and will be offering visitors the Mr Whippy treat for a light display donation. This was hugely popular in 2017 with our visitors and they have agreed to return this December to offer this popular treat to all our community visitors. “I feel proud that so many local businesses are continuing to get behind me and support
the light display for 2018 and feel that this demonstrates they are proud to be involved in our local community. I owe them a huge thankyou for their continued generosity and on-going support.” He added: “The hospice gave me and my family exceptional help and support in difficult times before losing my sister in December 2015. I am now continuing to fundraise in her memory and make her fascination for colour, light and sound live-on. I am determined to beat the £25,870 we raised in 2017, so want to make this year’s display the best yet!” Everybody is invited between 1st - 28th December, 6:15 – 9pm at Carters Green Farm, Jack Lane, Weston. _ For more information email info@westonlightdisplay.co.uk or for pictures and visitor reviews visit www.facebook.com/westonlightdisplay

Could you host an Action on Cancer workshop? Cancer is the biggest cause of death across Cheshire but the Action on Cancer team are on a mission to bring these figures down. The Action on Cancer team would love the chance to visit your local business, hobby club or voluntary group to talk about making healthier lifestyle choices, the importance of screening and spotting early signs and how to ensure everyone with cancer gets an earlier diagnosis that could lead to effective treatment. Ann Jones is Macmillan Lead Cancer Project Officer for NHS South Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS Vale Royal CCG. She said: “We can offer free group talks or workshops – anything from a 15 minute presentation to a much more in-depth, interactive session. Any group, any age, any background, anywhere in our local area. And we have lots of colourful, engaging materials so if you’re planning your own health and wellbeing event, we’d love to come along.” Although the campaign has only been running in South Cheshire and Vale Royal for the past two years, improved screening figures and other statistics show that the awareness activities are already making a difference. _ For more details, contact Ann Jones on 07880 026207 or ann.jones44@nhs.net.
