WELCOME CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

A very warm welcome to WIN Stadium for our visitors from Sydney Olympic (Mens) and Newcastle (Womens) to take on the mighty Wolves and Stingrays today on this very special occasion. Firstly I would like to thank our supporters who have been very loyal in their support of the Wolves despite our slow start to the season. Let’s hope our win last week away to Marconi to finish off the first home and away round can be repeated again today. It is with great pleasure I welcome the Football Community of the Illawarra and South Coast and I sincerely thank you on behalf of the club and the whole community for your attendance. Even greater is the coming together of the regions elite football teams representing us in the PS4 National Premier League NSW Mens 1 and Womens 1 divisions. MATCH PREVIEW ROUND 12 Last season’s Grand Finalists Sydney Olympic are today’s visitors for the Round 12 match against the South Coast Wolves. Sydney Olympic and the Wolves have twice so far this season with Olympic winning 3-0 on both occasions in the Mens 1 league and FFA Cup. However, that was then and this is now and only time will tell if the same result with be forthcoming. THE OPPOSITION TODAY – ROCKDALE CITY SUNS In 2014, Olympics’ longest sequence without loss was six - win win draw draw draw win – Rounds 12-18 and the longest winning sequence was three – Rounds 5-7 and 1921. The longest losing sequence was two - Rounds 10-11. The longest sequence without winning was four - loss draw loss loss - Rounds 8-11. The team concluded the season in fourth position with ten victories, and five draws earning 35 points, scoring 35 goals and conceding 27 with a goal difference of 8. The quickest goal, by Petar Markovic, was scored in the 2nd minute in Round 16 versus Marconi. Harris Gaitatzis and Evan Kostopoulos were joint top scorers with seven goals apiece, being two of ten players in total that were present on the score sheet. The team in five games finished scoreless. In the finals series Olympic defeated Rockdale City Suns 2-1 in the Elimination Final, Blacktown Spartans 3-0 in the Minor Semifinal, and Bonnyrigg White Eagles 5-4 on penalties with a 1-1 score line after extra time in the Preliminary Final. Against Blacktown City in the Grand Final, Olympic went down 2-1. The goal scorers in match order for Olympic were Ryan Keir, Troy Danaskos, Dimitri Hatzimouratis and Go Shirai plus Shirai and Nicholas Sorras. Gaitatzis’ goal in Round 17 was adjudged 2014 ‘NSW Goal Of The Week’ and Kostopoulos - with 5 appearances, Hatzimouratis (4) Danaskos (3), Brayden Sorge (2) Will Angel

6

(2), Taiga Soeda, Brendan Treloar, Paul Henderson and Shirai, were selected in ‘Team Of The Week’ for their performances. Sorge was named in the ‘Team Of The Year’ as was Kostopoulos, who was named on the bench. Multiple goal scorers in a single match were Shirai, who scored a hat trick in Round 17 versus APIA plus Kostopoulos and Hatzimouratis, who scored braces in Rounds 17 and 21 against APIA and Rockdale City Suns respectively. So far in 2015, Hatzimouratis was a multiple goal scorer with a hat trick versus Parramatta in Round 2 and Gaitatzis has scored two braces in successive weeks (Round 7 and 8) plus Shirai has also a brace. Sydney Olympic so far this season has been successful and has again Shirai, Hatzimouratis and Gaitatzis at their disposal for the major share of the goals. Up to this stage of the 2015 competition, Shirai with three, Hatzimouratis, Soeda, Angel and Gaitatzis have been nominated again for ‘Team Of The Week’. New players include Scott Balderson from Manly and Grant Lee has the coaching reins once again. A BLAST FROM THE PAST In 1983 in the return match on the 25th September (Round 28) Sydney Olympic and the Wolves scored a total of six goals between them. The match was played at St. George Stadium, this being Olympic’s home match. The respective team line-ups on this day were - Sydney Olympic: Gary Meier, Gary Phillips, Mike Coady, Tony Dakos, Graham Jennings, Jim Patikas, Peter Katholos, Terry Patalis, Marshall Soper, Mark Koussas. Coach: Manfred Schaefer. Wolves: Jim Preston, Peter Willis, Chris Dunleavy, Jeff Ainsworth, John Fleming, Jim McBreen, Steve Pollard, Larry Gaffney, Jamie Dummett, Roy Cotton, Phil O’Connor. Coach: Willie Wallace Patikas started the goals rolling when he scored after just two minutes and a quarter

of an hour later Patalis put his team two up with a header. The Wolves pegged one back through O’Connor. He was positioned near the goal line and swung the ball towards the goal. As this happened, McBreen darted in and with the goalkeeper’s view being obscured the ball went in. Twelve minutes into the second half Pollard was red carded. On his way to the tunnel he surprisingly jumped the fence and had a set to with an Olympic supporter who had reportedly thrown a full can that hit the target. Three minutes later, with ten men, the Wolves equalized through a Willis penalty kick. Olympic regained the lead three minutes later through Patikas again. The Wolves lost another player as McBreen was marched in the 71st minute. Now with the opposition down to nine men, Olympic looked home and hosed. However, they wasted their opportunities with three clear-cut chances for Soper that he did not convert. Instead, against the odds, the Wolves scored from a Willis free kick and came out of the match sharing the spoils. THE MATCH UP Have met sixty seven times in the league since 1981, the team from the north has the major share of victories, 34 to 17. They also lead in the goal-scoring department 129 to 79. The biggest winning margin for Olympic was 5-0 in 2002/03 season while the Wolves was 3-0 in 1997/98. Olympic have kept the Wolves scoreless on twenty-three occasions and eight times when it was the reverse.

were the scorers. So far this season the results sequence for both teams in the last five matches (from earliest to latest) – Olympic – win, win, loss, win loss. Wolves - win, loss, loss draw, win. In the first meeting for this season in Round 1 Sydney Olympic won 3-0 with the scorers being the Japanese duo, Go Shirai with a brace, together with Taiga Soeda. On the points table at present, Olympic sits in third position on 23 points having seven wins and two draws, sitting higher on the points table than the Wolves, being on ten points having two wins and three draws on 10 points. Last week the two teams’ results were the opposite of each other- Sydney Olympic went down by three goals without reply versus Sydney United 58 and the Wolves defeated Marconi Stallions with a late goal courtesy of Simonoski, coming three minutes from the end of the regulation time. This was the Wolves’ second victory and Olympic’s third loss and further neglecting to score for the first time this season. The Wolves on the other hand, have been kept scoreless on four occasions. Players to watch on each side include Olympic’s attackers Shirai, Hatzimouratis and Gaitatzis together with the Wolves’ Jordan Murray, Simonoski and Brendan Griffin. By Malcolm Rowney

The top scorer for each club at present is Hatzimouratis (S0) and Simonoski (SCW) with nine and five goals respectively, with a total of seven and five players having shared in the scoring department. Last season both games ended in 1-1 draws. Ricky Zucco (SCW) and Hatzimouratis (SO) plus Angel (SO) and Jordan Murray (SCW)

FEATURE STORY ‘NEW BOYS IN TOWN’ 2015 WOLVES’ RECRUITS

JACOB BOUTOUBIA

The Wolves in 2015 have had their greatest influx of new players for some years with quite a number of last years squad moving on, many to clubs in the Illawarra Premier League or to another Premier League club or overseas. Coach Nahuel Arrarte had to sign replacements to cover these losses and hopefully improve the team and have them competitive. However, two recruits who played in the Pre-season (and with one of these playing off the bench in the early competition rounds) never worked out and have since parted ways with the club. Now that eleven rounds have elapsed in the competition, these particular new boys have settled in with their new club and have made telling contributions and have been now joined by two midseason additions.

A very new boy to the Wolves, Boutoubia originally from Sydney made his debut coming off the bench for Chris Price in the seventy-sixth minute against Marconi in Round 11. At the outset of this season, he was on Marconi’s books and scored a goal for the Stallions in the Pre-Season Cup match against Sutherland Sharks. Previously as a junior he played for Sydney City Eagles and later for Sydney University in Mens 2 Youth grade. In 2013 he signed with 1st team of FBC Savona, a top Lega Pro team in Italy from the Genova International School Of Soccer.

DAHRI AL SAAD Al Saad is a right-sided defender who formerly played in Denmark with Svebolle. He trialled with the Wolves in the closed trials with Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers and impressed with his approach and was thus signed. Kuwaiti born Alsaad came to Australia as an eight year old. He turned out for Doonside Hawks as a junior before venturing on to APIA. He went overseas and played in Brazil, Thailand, Denmark and Germany. He has played most games (missing the Rounds 7 and 9) in the Wolves team since he was signed making the right flank his own. He runs up and down the right side defending and attacking throughout each game. At the opposition end he is not afraid to have shots when within the target range. He is fearless in tackles, determined and has good presence on the ball. NPLNSW.COM.AU

He is a midfielder and should add creative flair and should be able to score a fair share of goals. SHANNON FIELDING Fielding was promoted from 2014 U20s Youth team. He played some time in the closed pre-season trial matches against Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers and as well in the Pre-Season Cup. He has made three appearances off the bench in the Premier League and has started in all the 2015 FFA Cup matches, especially the wins against Mt. Druitt Rangers and Spirit FC. In fact, he added the last goal in the Yagoona 2015 FFA Cup match. For the Wolves, he has made a number of appearances off the bench and has improved to be a starter in Rounds 10 and 11. He shows determination and is industrious and has not let the team down at all. BRENDAN GRIFFIN Griffin’s junior club was Bangor in the Sutherland Shire before being promoted to the Sutherland Sharks junior teams.

FEATURE STORY

In 2010 he was with the Central Coast Mariners Youth team. Griffin represented Australian at Young Socceroo level and also spent time at Spirit F.C. during 2014, the team the Wolves defeated in the 2015 FFA Cup Round 5 match. The defender also played in Norway previously for two years with the club, Moss FK, Moss being a coastal town. As a player, he seems to have boundless energy and he covers a lot of ground during matches and crops anywhere. Griffin scored a cracker of a goal against Blacktown Spartans in Round 5 for his initial Premier League goal, which was selected as ‘Goal of The Week’. For this initial goal, Peter Simonoski controlled the ball that came to him from an opposition clearance. The ball was moved on to Sam Matthews who subsequently passed to Griffin. His ensuing left footed shot from the edge of the area, flew into the goal. He also scored the second goal in the team’s initial victory of the season in Round 7. On receiving the ball just outside the box once again following on from a dummy from Matthews, he produced a quality shot that slightly swerved to the right to lodge inside the goal. Another goal emanated in the Round 5 FFA Cup Yagoona match. As well as getting onto the score sheet, he endeavours to set up his team’s strikers, when they are better placed to shoot. DAVID STOJIC Stojic is a midfielder who played for South Coast United in the Illawarra Premier League and is a local Illawarra product. As a junior he played for the Wolves from the under 14s to the Under 18s. While in the 15s the team secured the 2008 NSW Premier League premiership and in the team then is a teammate now in Peter

10

Simonoski. Stojic, also in fact, played in the first Wolves’ team when coached by Trevor Morgan in 2011 when he came on for Stepjan Paric as a substitute in the Round 3 Waratah Cup match against Hawkesbury. He has also played spent some time with Sydney United with the likes of Glen Trifiro (now of Central Coast Mariners) and Bankstown Berries. At the Wolves in 2015 so far he scored a couple of goals and captained the side in the FFA Cup Round 5 game against Spirit FC. His first goal was in the 2015 Pre-Season Cup versus Sydney United 58 in wet conditions at Ian McClellan Park. A free kick was awarded just outside the box. After some deliberation between himself and Simonoski, Stojic drilled a low shot that cannoned off the defensive wall. The ball returned to him and this time he produced another low shot and hit the target for a 46th minute goal. He is the organiser in the centre of midfield and sets many an attacking foray and wins the ball most of the time when tackling. TOM MANOS Manos is a 19-year-old goalkeeper who has come to club from Western Sydney Wanderers Under 21 side. Prior to this, he had played for Manly United and when there, was the recipient of the Lucas Neill Scholarship in 2012. In 2013, he turned out for Bankstown City Lions in the Mens 2 competition. As a junior, he also represented Northern Tigers in 2009 and at the end of that season was named Under 12 Super League ‘Goalkeeper Of The Year.’ Representative honours have also befallen him as he was selected in the Australian Under 19 team. With the Wolves, Manos claimed the shot stopper’s position after debuting in #PS4NPLNSW

Round 3 at Seymour Shaw Park against Sutherland Sharks and since that time he has been the incumbent. He has impressed with his undoubted ability.

defender’s position and has been ever present in both league and cup games. He is robust defender with good anticipation and is unruffled when on the ball.

ANTHONY PROIA

BRADLEY WELCH

Striker Proia is also a very new addition to the Wolves who has made one substitute appearance off the bench in the Round 11 game against Marconi since he came to the club as a mid season signing. Proia was formerly at Brisbane Roar after being signed by Ange Postecoglu in 2013 from the Australian Institute Of Sport in Canberra. However, in his thirteen month stay at the Roar, he was not given any first team appearances and so landed at Melbourne Victory for the youth team. Previously he has played in NPL NSW Mens 1 for the Marconi club in 2013 and in that season scored two goals. He began at Sydney United at the beginning of the 2015.

Former Trinidad and Tobago international of five appearances, Welch, who was born in the US and grew up in Orlando, Florida turned out for Dapto Dandaloo Fury in 2014. He played in 2014 Illawarra Premier League Grand Final versus Bulli and he set up one goal with his cross to assist his team in winning the title. Prior to his Australian jaunt he turned out for FC New York in 2011 and San Juan Jabloteh in 2013/14. He also played for Rollins College in 2010 and was named Offensive Player Of The Week following his hat trick in September of that particular year.

He should add some attacking thrust into the team and be a thorn to opposition defences. In his first appearance he did draw a good save from the opposition goalkeeper. JAMES O’ROURKE O’Rourke started in the youth teams at Bankstown Lions. At sixteen he went to England and was in the youth team at Walsall for almost eighteen months. On his return to Australia he went back with Bankstown when they were in the Premier League in 2011, and then again after they were relegated back into Super League. Sydney University FC was the destination for a time before returning to Bankstown in the now Mens 2 competition for three years until surfacing at the Wolves in 2015.

His first goal for his new club was scored in the Round 4 FFA Cup match against Mt Druitt Town Rangers in the extra time victory. He has gone on to score a further goal, against Bonnyrigg White Eagles in the Round 7 upset victory. He scored the first equaliser rising to side glanced a header to his right past the ‘keeper from a Peter Simonoski cross. Following on from this, Welch indeed scored a hat trick in the team’s 10-1 Round 6 FFA Cup win against Yagoona. By Malcolm Rowney

O’Rourke has played strongly in the central NPLNSW.COM.AU
