Belle of the Ball Our 26th annual Swan Ball issue is here 5 eras of CEOs

Thanks to our sponsors and co-chairs for making this a night to remember! Oasis Center is celebrating 50 years of providing youth connection to caring adults in a safe, supportive environment to create positive change.

In a typical year, our Nfocus team covers between 300 and 400 charitable events, but no event is as big as Swan Ball. It requires the largest team (seven Nfocus staffers attend) and the biggest time commitment (a total of eight hours at the event). But that’s precisely why we can provide more comprehensive coverage of the white-tie gala than any other media outlet in town. This year is no exception. We’ve got stunning, in-depth coverage of the Swan Ball Auction Party (page 42), the Patrons Party (page 48), the main event (page 53) and even the fashions (page 64). This is our 26th annual Swan Ball issue. Our first issue dedicated to the Cheekwood fundraiser was in July of 1994, back when our photos ran in black and white and our pages were news-

print instead of glossy. As the years have passed and our issues have gotten bigger, our Swan Ball coverage has grown too. I’m biased, but I think this might just be one of the biggest and best Swan Ball issues we’ve ever done. Nothing pairs better with Swan Ball than beauty products, so we’ve got a feature on some of the best local beauty brands. Did you know that Nashville has an array of cosmetics companies, skin care lines and even a nail polish company based right here in town? We’re giving you the inside scoop on seven Nashville-based beauty brands that you should know about on page 67. I hope you’re able to enjoy this brief hiatus from the social season and rest up before it starts again this fall. Happy summer! BY NaNcY FloYd

behind the scenes

Clare Armistead It’s hard to imagine a more fitting recipient of the Swan Ball’s 2019 Swan Award than Clare Armistead. The city — and its nonprofits — would not be the same without this Nashville native’s vitality, friendship and support. At an age when many are content to write checks, Clare was founding events and raising money for a diverse assortment of causes. The Ballet Ball and Sunday in the Park, two signature events that she helped create, each turn 30 this year, and Once in a Blue Moon for The Land Trust for Tennessee (another event founded by her) was launched 19 years ago. Her dedication to Cheekwood began in the earliest days of the Swan Ball and includes chairing the fifth white-tie gala in 1967. Regardless of the undertaking, Clare inspires those around her with her quiet elegance, commitment and encouragement. by Holly Hoffman photograph by Daniel Meigs

Rock the House City Winery was packed with supporters of Hospital Hospitality House for its annual Rock the House. The cocktail hour kicked off with a wine pull as well as both silent and live auctions. After dinner, music and dancing ensued with this lively bunch. Funds raised will support HHH’s mission to create safe and affordable places for patients and their families as they travel to Nashville for medical care. In addition to places to stay overnight, HHH also provides day services, such as showers and laundry facilities, as well as supplies to those temporarily confined to hospital waiting rooms. by Lauren Langston Stewart photographs by Eric England

YWCA Spring Breakfast

Rally on the Runway

The Spring Breakfast is always an emotional and inspiring morning that showcases the impact YWCA makes in our community. Hannah Paramore Breen and Lindsey Lance produced the compelling program that featured four people sharing how the nonprofit’s services impacted their lives. Each received a standing ovation from the 1,000 people in attendance. YWCA is the largest provider of domestic violence services in the region, and funds raised went to those programs, Amend Together (innovative prevention programs for boys and men), and Girls Inc., which provides long-term empowerment to girls and young women.

It was a night of fashion and fun at the fourth annual Rally on the Runway, a fundraiser for the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research. The evening included dinner and an auction, but the main attraction was the fashion show featuring professional models and players from the Tennessee Titans, led by honorary chair Jurrell Casey. The real stars of the runway were the Rally Kids, children who are cancer survivors or are currently fighting the disease, modeling a courage and zest for life that’s truly inspiring.

Swan Ball Underwriters Reception In the weeks leading up to the Swan Ball, co-chairs Jana Davis and Ellen Martin joined forces with 2018 co-chairs Beth Alexander and Patti Smallwood to express gratitude to the generous men and women who’ve supported Cheekwood and the white-tie gala. The Underwriters Reception was a relaxed cocktail party in the loggia at the Cheekwood Mansion for the ball’s biggest donors. Guests nibbled on passed hors d’œuvres from Kristen Winston, including warm pimento cheese gougères, mini cheddar biscuits with ham, and wonton crisps topped with seared tuna, mango and cilantro, as they toasted another successful Swan Ball.

Joe Interrante’s Retirement Party It was a perfect spring evening when Iris Buhl opened her home and wonderful gardens to a small group of friends to celebrate Joe Interrante, who retired as CEO of Nashville Cares after 25 years with Tennessee’s largest HIV/AIDS service organization. The evening was a prelude of sorts to the much larger celebration held a couple of weeks later at the agency. In addition to bidding a fond farewell to Joe, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to meet Amna Osman, who became the fifth CEO in the nonprofit’s 34 years. by Holly HoFFmaN photographs by eric englanD continued on page 28

The Land Trust’s 20th Anniversary the Land trust for Tennessee celebrated its 20th anniversary with a number of exciting announcements — including a new website and logo — followed by a party at the Loveless Barn. Considering the organization has had nearly 400 conservation wins and has protected 126,000 acres since its inception in 1999, there was much to celebrate. More than 200 people gathered around the barn for a word from Phil Bredesen, the founder of The Land Trust, and National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez, who said, “The Land Trust for Tennessee is not only preserving land for future generations — this organization is helping preserve stories of those who came before us and those who will follow.” by Lauren Langston stewart PhotograPhs by sanford Myers

Brew at the Zoo It was an evening for party animals at the Nashville Zoo for the eighth annual Brew at the Zoo. The adults-only, after-hours summer shindig gave hundreds of guests run of the park while they enjoyed samples of more than 100 of the best craft beers from across the country, alongside local favorites like Mantra, Yazoo, Black Abbey and Yee-Haw. And what would a visit to the zoo be without a sighting of some furry friends? Fortunately, a couple of the zoo’s clouded leopard cubs were on hand to greet lucky guests!

Andrew Jackson Foundation’s Spring Outing welcomes Christine Todd Whitman

he Spring Outing, benefiting the Andrew Jackson Foundation ( formerly the Ladies’ Hermitage Association), is a tradition that dates back more than a century — 119 years to be exact. What began as a picnic on the lawn is now an elegant seated luncheon for several hundred ladies and gentlemen. This year, co-chairs Nancy Deaton and Mimi DeCamp continued the newer tradition of holding a morning reception for patrons to meet featured speaker Christine Todd Whitman, former governor of New Jersey and past administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Afterward, they gathered on the back porch for a glass of Champagne before making their way to the tent to join the other guests. While everyone enjoyed a springtime lunch from Kristen Winston Catering, Regent Bob McDonald welcomed all, and Emily Reynolds introduced the special guest. Christine’s absorbing speech addressed the importance of leaving history — both the good and the bad — in place in order for us to remember and learn from it. First, she commended the determined women who stood up to powerful men in order to preserve The Hermitage. Today, people working to conserve history face a greater opposition: those trying to remove monuments of the past. Her concern is that doing so takes away the ability to understand and thus increases the risk of repeating mistakes, and she added that when defining a leader’s legacy, it is important to look at the totality of their service, study the times in which they lived and confront the disturbing aspects to educate people and not excuse past actions. In closing, she reminded everyone that this is a great nation, and while not perfect, we need to understand the past because the country is worth protecting and improving for future generations. Christine said, “We leave it to the women to preserve history.” In 1889, the founders of the Ladies’ Hermitage Association recognized the importance of safeguarding Andrew Jackson’s home and legacy, and 130 years later, the Andrew Jackson Foundation continues to tell the stories of all who lived there. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Daniel Meigs

It Takes Two Gail and David Williams honored at Francis S. Guess Bridge to Equality Fund Award Luncheon

O

nly in its fourth year, the Francis S. Guess Bridge to Equality Fund Award Luncheon is already a not-to-be-missed event hosted by The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. Business leaders and community volunteers fill the Davidson Ballroom at the Music City Center to honor the memory of Francis, a civic leader and champion for civil rights, and to recognize those who, like him, encourage innovation to achieve equality and create opportunities for all. This year, Gail Williams and her late husband, David, were named the recipients of the award. Since arriving in Nashville in 2000, the couple made a lasting impact on the city. Gail has been the associate director of community relations at Vanderbilt since 2001 and has served on numerous boards. A former vice chancellor at Vanderbilt and a trailblazer on campus and in the city, David passed away only days after stepping down to return to teaching at Vanderbilt Law School. But with his favorite Motown tunes filling the ballroom, everyone felt David’s presence. During the family-style meal, Vicki Yates and Charles Starks, president and CEO of MCC, said a few words. Sean Henry, Nashville Predators president and CEO, led a thought-provoking discussion about equality with Shan Foster, a former Vanderbilt basketball star and vice president of external affairs and Amend Together at YWCA; Eddie George, former Titans running back, actor, philanthropist and entrepreneur; Robert Sherrill, president of Impact Youth Outreach; Emilie M. Townes, dean of Vanderbilt Divinity School; and Stephanie White, head coach for Vanderbilt women’s basketball. Before presenting the award to Gail, Richard Dinkins surprised the crowd with a big announcement. The Williams family has established the David Williams II Scholarship Fund at The Community Foundation in honor of his dedication to education. In her acceptance, Gail spoke about the importance of building bridges, advancing equality and having the courage to speak up when you know something isn’t right. Expressing a sentiment felt by those who knew Francis and for whom he provided opportunities, she went on to say, “So Francis, thank you for leading the way.”

Horse Sense Music Country Grand Prix keeps its good thing going

W

ith such rapid change in this city, it’s reassuring to know some things remain the same. Such is the case with the Music Country Grand Prix. For 31 years, people have flocked to Franklin to watch the worldclass show-jumping competition and to demonstrate their support for Saddle Up. Brownland Farm once again provided the pastoral setting, and Sarah Ingram and Jennifer Pennington have co-chaired the event for so long even they don’t know how many times! It was a hot, sunny day, but constant breezes made it pleasant for everyone. Patrons and sponsors took refuge under a tent, where they enjoyed Jumpin’ Jack (Daniel’s) cocktails and a tempting spread from The Yellow Porch and Puckett’s. Using a powder blue and Hermès orange color scheme, Laura Landstreet and Lorie Duke pooled their talents — and household accoutrements — to create dazzling floral displays in Lorie’s chinoiserie vases and bowls. In one massive centerpiece, bright orange flowers sprang from a glass vase filled with carrots. The highlight of the day is watching the riders and horses who come from all over the nation to compete for the $50,000 purse. First, Saddle Up riders Emma Claire Spiceland and Joshna Jones joined service members to present the colors, and The X-Factor participant Rion Paige sang the national anthem. Everyone watched intently as the participants displayed their extraordinary athleticism and precision while clearing 14 fences in the allotted time. There was one heartstopping moment when a rider fell from her horse and had to be taken to the hospital, but fortunately she will make a full recovery. The action resumed and the rest of the afternoon went smoothly. The exhilarating competition came to an end with David Jennings riding Caddie R. of Full Circle Farm coming out on top. The big winners of the day were Saddle Up, Middle Tennessee’s oldest and largest organization offering equineassisted activities exclusively to children and youth with disabilities, and the hundreds of kids who benefit from its therapeutic and recreational programs.

So Long, Farewell TPAC says adieu to Kathleen O’Brien

M

onday nights can be uneventful, but the first Monday in June was actionpacked for the supporters of TPAC at War Memorial Auditorium. The President’s Dinner was newly instituted as a thank you to the nonprofit’s most generous donors, but this inaugural gathering was unlike other first-time events. Making it extra special, the night was also a farewell celebration for Kathleen O’Brien, the outgoing President and CEO who was retiring after 31 years with the arts organization. As she made her way across the courtyard, the honoree was stopped every few steps by friends thanking her for a successful run at TPAC and wishing her the best in the future. Once inside, the congratulations and goodbyes continued. During the lively cocktail hour, attendees made a point to welcome another important guest: Jennifer Turner, who officially takes over as president and CEO of TPAC on July 1. A scrumptious dinner from The Chef and I was served, and laughter filled the air as people shared their favorite Kathleen stories. Needless to say, it took considerable effort to capture everyone’s attention and get the program started. In between remarks from Board Chair Tracy Kane and the presentation of a Lifetime Applause Award to Kathleen, a tribute video delivered heartfelt words from arts company directors and industry peers — both local and nationwide — and from Martha Ingram, who was the driving force behind TPAC’s creation. Among the many achievements over the course of Kathleen’s 31 years with the performing arts center, more than 1.8 million Tennessee students and educators participated in TPAC’s Humanities Outreach in Tennessee. Matt Logan — one H.O.T. kid who went on to have an outstanding Broadway career — thrilled everyone with an energetic production featuring highlights from the last 30 years of TPAC shows. The inaugural President’s Dinner was a fabulous way to celebrate generous supporters, say thank you and farewell to Kathleen, and introduce a new tradition with a keen eye to the continuing success and growth of TPAC.

Up for Grabs Bidding on luxury lots at the Swan Ball Auction Party

T

here’s one surefire way to guarantee a beautiful, memorable party: put two event experts in charge and let them work their magic. Please Be Seated’s Mary Huddleston and AmosEvents’ Amos Gott took the reins of the Swan Ball Auction Party, serving as co-chairs for the lively night and transforming the Belle Meade Country Club into a chic spring wonderland. Soft pastels set the stage for the indoor-outdoor affair. Stunning florals in cream, pale pink and light green hues filled the space, and bowls of lemons added a cheerful pop of color, the perfect complement to the whimsical green and white striped tent walls. Of course, the breathtaking décor paled in comparison to Mary’s stunning vibrant green Pucci dress that once belonged to her grandmother-in-law. The passed hors d’œuvres — lamb and feta meatballs, goat-cheese-stuffed dates with bacon and wild mushroom tartlets to name a few — were nearly as tantalizing as the 78 lots up for grabs in the silent and live auctions. Guests filled the early part of the night bouncing between tables to admire items as diverse as a Zang Toi mink-trimmed wrap (modeled by the gorgeous Brittany Jenkins), portraits from Michael Shane Neal and Lee Baskerville, and spectacular jewelry from John de Jong, King Jewelers and Cindi Earl, among others. And of course it wouldn’t be a Swan Ball Auction Party without trips aplenty. The silent auction boasted 31 domestic and international adventures to diverse locales, including the Dominican Republic, Belize, Tuscany, Croatia, Ireland and Saint Thomas. Auction co-chairs Laura Bowen, Lise Morrow and Susan Weathersby really outdid themselves with the assortment of luxury items up for grabs. The most coveted lots came out in the live auction, led by Jeff Randall from Stokes Auction Group and Grace Clayton. With 21 packages valued at over $300,000, the live auction got everyone excited. An all-inclusive stay at legendary quail-hunting destination Millpond Plantation and getaways to London and Deer Valley, Utah, proved to be the hottest items. It was only fitting that the auction concluded with a bidding frenzy over a private dinner for 24 at Cheekwood as the beloved botanical gardens is, as always, the belle of this ball.

Getting the Party Started The Swan Ball Patrons Party is filled with whimsy and wonder

A

few nights before the Swan Ball, Jean and Denny Bottorff threw open the doors to their magnificent new home to welcome guests to the Patrons Party. Jean graciously greeted nearly every person in the foyer and ushered them inside the palatial pad where Latin trio Serenatta provided festive background music during the cocktail hour. The weather could not have been more perfect for revelers to mingle on the beautiful back patio, overlooking the reflecting pool and the verdant property, fondly referred to as “the meadow.” Several ladies hung back inside to peruse sparkly goodies from Swan Ball Jeweler John de Jong, including co-chair Jana Davis who nabbed a killer pair of drop earrings that perfectly complemented her floral cocktail dress. She had been eyeing a bracelet before discovering the earrings and joked, “I was having a dalliance with this bracelet, but I’m marrying these earrings.” May they live happily ever after. When it was time for dinner, guests wove through the boxwood garden to a shuttle that transported them down the hill to the grand tent. Jenny Richter Corts waved her magic wand and created a truly breathtaking scene outfitted in peacock blue and spring green with help from The Tulip Tree. Every inch of the tent presented a whimsical new treasure to behold, from vibrant peacocks flanking the entrance to antique birdcages filled with florals to a makeshift forest of trees dripping with wisteria. The dreamy dinner setting was the perfect accompaniment to a heavenly meal from Kristen Winston of watermelon and heirloom tomato salad, herb-crusted sea bass and chocolate crème brûlée. Following dinner, local entertainment producer Matt Logan introduced a surprise appearance from singer-songwriter (and former star of The Voice) Patrick Thomas. Patrick dazzled the crowd with a performance of “Southern Nights,” “The Music of the Night” and “Time to Say Goodbye,” a selection of Jean’s favorite songs. The night eventually had to come to an end, but the promise of the upcoming Swan Ball hung in the air, thrilling everyone with the reminder that this party wasn’t over quite yet.

Home Sweet Home A spectacular Swan Ball to remember

I

t’s not easy to make a 57-year-old event feel fresh and new, but Swan Ball cochairs Jana Davis and Ellen Martin did just that with this year’s spectacular white-tie gala benefiting Cheekwood. The duo’s impeccable taste was evident in even the tiniest details of the lavish affair, resulting in an incomparably beautiful night that will be long remembered. While many co-chairs draw inspiration from the botanical gardens and attempt to bring the outside in, Jana and Ellen focused on what life would be like in the Country Era estate with their “Coming Home to Cheekwood” theme. The grand tent on Swan Lawn didn’t feel like a tent at all but rather an extension of the mansion, complete with a library, drawing room, portrait gallery and great hall. Bookshelves filled with antique books created the backdrop for the mahogany bars during the cocktail hour, and the loggia was transformed into an orangery, complemented with orange trees and flowered vines draping over the fountain. The co-chairs worked closely with The Social Office’s Dori Thornton Waller and The Tulip Tree to create the enchanting partyscape. Jana and Ellen wanted guests to feel so at home that they even provided some pieces from their own houses for the décor. (The chairs we used in our Nfocus Portrait Studio came from Ellen’s dining room!) The elegant three-course dinner from Kristen Winston was the perfect precursor to the live auction. The four one-of-a-kind getaways auctioned off proved to be highly covetable items, with a two-week Tuscany vacation going for $20,000 and an over-the-top luxe visit to Naples, Florida, going for $22,500. Following the auction, Lady Antebellum thrilled the crowd with an hour-long set that included their own chart-topping hits along with popular covers, including the Eagles’ “Take It Easy” and Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long.” Lady A’s Charles Kelley joked that it was strange playing a concert for all his golfing buddies. And although the crowd might be accustomed to seeing Charles and his bandmates on the golf course or at the grocery store, they still crushed onto the dance floor in front of the stage and posed for selfies with the band as they performed. continued on page 54

glitz and glam

Off the Runway Our favorite fashions from Swan Ball

N

ashville’s social set always looks good, but the city’s most fabulous fashionistas pull out all the stops when Swan Ball arrives. The 57th annual white-tie gala was magnificent in every way, and the fashions were no exception. From custom couture gowns (and tuxes) to styles snatched right off the runway, the ladies and gents in attendance dazzled nearly as much as the stunning décor. Our team pulled together some of our favorite fashions from the night and got the behind-the-scenes scoop on these stunning styles. It was nearly impossible to narrow it down, but here are a few of the most showstopping looks of the night. by Nancy floyd and Holly Hoffman Photographs by eric england, daniel meigs and michael w. bunch

SHINING BRIGHT

Oscar de la Renta was a popular designer this year, and it’s not hard to see why. Theresa Menefee’s lace and tulle stunner with a scalloped neckline is from the Pre-Fall line.

A TRUE ORIGINAL

Janice Elliott Morgan’s couture ivory Taroni silk satin tunic with framed neck, kimono sleeves and column skirt was made for her by friend and designer Zang Toi.

Clare Armistead’s Ponceau 8 Mirrorball gown by Talbot Runhof originally had a cold shoulder and draped back, but she ordered hers with two long sleeves instead.

The Beauty Around us Local beauty brands we love As all locals know, there's a lot more to Nashville than just music, and the city's flourishing beauty industry has quickly become one of our favorite hidden gems. Whether it’s items with a philanthropic bent, a dedication to clean ingredients or simply some of the best products around, these seven local beauty brands proffer a wide range of stellar offerings that make Nashville proud. Supporting local has never been more beautiful.

Nash + Jones Kim Rohwer, the founder of Nash + Jones skin care company, doesn’t take the term “all natural” lightly. Nor does she stop there. Coconut oil, for example, has become a media darling featured on blogs and in nutrition and beauty magazines and is wonderful, not only for cooking but for your skin as well. That said, it shouldn’t be used on your face, says Kim. It will likely clog your pores. She has spent the past 14 years since her son was born learning the ins and outs of skin care. Both she and her son once struggled with allergy-induced rashes and breakouts, so she made it her mission to find a solution. Her research led her to conclude that what you put on your body can be as important as what you put in it. The company has about two dozen products — mostly for the face — that cleanse, hydrate and exfoliate, including the brand’s Clay Cleanser, a liquid Castile soap made with kaolin clay and pink Himalayan salt, and an eye cream made from ingredients including Vitamin E and cold-pressed sweet almond and raspberry oils. There is also the Kelp Body Polish with solar-evaporated Dead Sea salt and organic kelp, a Hair Tonic made with essential oils, a lip balm containing shea butter, avocado oil and beeswax, and accessories such as a hand-carved wood soap dish, wooden bowls and bamboo washcloths. Based just outside Nashville in Fairview, Tennessee, where Kim lives with her husband, Brant, and their two children, Nash + Jones makes products that are available online and carried in 300 stores nationwide, including Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Market at the Silos in Waco, Texas. Locally, they can be found at a variety of retailers including Oak Nashville on Charlotte Avenue, Herban Market in Cool Springs and David Arms Gallery in Leiper’s Fork.

Little Seed Farm

Daniel Cole Collection

68

At Little Seed Farm, it all starts with little seeds — seeds that grow into foliage for a herd of completely grass-fed goats. Milk from the goats is then combined with botanicals to create nourishing soaps, balms, mists, moisturizers, serums and oils that are completely chemical free. Co-founders Eileen and James Ray are dedicated to sustainability, whether it be through rotational grazing on their 84-acre property, composting and recycling, or providing all of the electricity needed to operate the farm with solar panels. The couple’s mission is to encourage other companies to embrace land stewardship and sustainability and join them in creating products that are humanely and responsibly produced. Perhaps their most well-known items are their soaps, available as both bars and liquid, which don the faces of their adorable goats along with their names — such as Tyeras, Zephyr, Calima and Chinook. The options include intoxicating scents like geranium rose, orange vetiver, lavender, rosemary mint and many more. But it doesn’t stop there. They also offer natural deodorants — yes, that actually work! — and botanical body butter with ultra-rich shea butter to soothe dry skin. Their roster of skin care products includes a facial mist, with ingredients like German chamomile and marshmallow to soothe and balance, correct pH and refine skin, and a moisturizer made with goat’s milk, argan oil and perilla seed to resurface skin, promote cell turnover and reduce redness. Body oil, elasticity serum, body scrubs and more round out their offerings, which are available at more than 50 locations across Nashville. Only the highest quality natural and organic ingredients are used in Little Seed Farm products, making each product just as good for your body as for the environment.

The Daniel Cole Collection is a skin care and makeup brand that owner Val Cole co-founded with her late mother, Joyce Daniel Hill. In 1998, these two celebrity makeup artists, with years of experience in television, award shows, music videos, and countless photo shoots and large-scale weddings, decided it was time for a change, and the Daniel Cole Collection was born. With the help of a chemist, the ladies took the makeup they loved and tweaked it to create something better. With added pigments, products last longer — on the skin and in the jar — which ultimately gives clients quality makeup at reasonable prices. From her cozy Bandywood location, Val offers everything from their concealers and foundations to cheek, lip and eye colors to sponges and brushes. She also teaches makeup application, does special-occasion makeup and has a booming bride business. “I love lips! I love lipstick!” proclaims Val, who is the only person in Tennessee making lipsticks in house. As a calligrapher who mixes her own inks, she made an easy transition to custom blending lipsticks. Now this self-proclaimed fanatic has launched two lines as divisions of her cosmetics company. Music City Lips, packaged in four sets of three colors each — shimmery glosses or liquid lips for long-lasting color — have locally inspired names like Rhymin’ Red (the perfect red), Star Quality (deep natural rose) and Southern Accent (a soft gloss). For her brides, she created Love Struck Lips in two combinations of long-lasting mattes and glosses to last throughout the day. Currently, all Daniel Cole Collection cosmetics may be purchased online or at the Bandywood shop, and Music City Lips is available at White's Mercantile and other select retailers.

Clary Collection Jen Auerbach and Adriel Denae met when they were each pregnant with their first child, and their friendship grew out of a shared frustration with the inability to find safe skin care products to use during and after pregnancy. That connection led to the birth of Clary Collection. Knowing that skin is the body’s largest organ and that it absorbs a lot of environmental toxins, the duo started experimenting with gentle botanicals, steeping flowers and herbs in warm avocado, jojoba and olive oils to infuse healing properties. Soon they started whipping up blends of chamomile, lavender, plantain leaf and marigold, an incredibly simple combination that they found to be highly effective. Clary offers an all-purpose balm that can be used on everything from lips to face and hands. The Renew + Repair Oil is designed to deeply nourish and heal, making it perfect for sun-damaged skin or preventing stretch marks. For those looking to fight frizz, the hair oil helps balance and build elasticity with sandalwood, frankincense, lavender, rose hip and neroli. Bar soaps are available with ingredients like detoxifying pink clay, anti-inflammatory nettle and balancing patchouli, and a face serum utilizes antioxidant-rich geranium as well as red raspberry and carrot seed oils, which provide natural SPF. The Bath + Body Oil rounds out the offerings with six simple ingredients that deeply hydrate all skin types and offer relief for those prone to eczema and psoriasis. Jen and Adriel believe in total transparency, so every last ingredient is disclosed, revealing that the products are truly free of all synthetic fragrances, parabens, phthalates, preservatives and fillers. With less than 10 distinct products, Clary Collection’s selection is small but mighty. And undoubtedly, your skin will thank you.

Therapy Systems

Aila Cosmetics Therapy Systems, Private Edition’s skin care and makeup line developed by owner Linda Roberts, has maintained a loyal following since its introduction 26 years ago. The six original products remain an important part of the brand that has grown to more than 200 items for cleansing, moisturizing and anti-aging concerns. As a retailer, Private Edition has always carried the best skin care and makeup products. About 10 years into the business, glycolic acid started growing in popularity, but Linda wanted something better than what she could find in other brands. She partnered with local pharmacist John Hollis to create a glycolic product that was affordable, easy to use and gentle on the skin. The result was two cleansers, two serums and two creams that are the backbone of the brand. Fast forward to 2018, glycolic acid is still an ingredient Therapy Systems believes in for total skin health, but people are looking for more products that are effective but natural — without chemicals, parabens or other harmful ingredients. Linda again teamed up with John Hollis Pharmacy to create three 100 percent natural products. After about a year in development, Natural Solutions by Therapy Systems launched in the beginning of June with a cleanser, moisturizer and eye cream. Kaolin clay — great for sensitive skin — gives the cleanser its pinkish hue. The moisturizer contains tremella mushroom, or the ”beauty mushroom,” which has water-retention capabilities similar to hyaluronic acid, and bamboo extract that acts as an anti-inflammatory and as a lightening agent. The eye cream has wheat peptides, which are firming. With the addition of these new products, Therapy Systems has something for everyone, and the well-trained staff can put together a good routine for any skin concern. Natural Solutions, like all Therapy Systems skin care and makeup, can be purchased at Private Edition in Green Hills, at The Cosmetic Market and online.

Aila, an all-natural line of nail polishes and nail care products, is here to prove that cosmetics can be healthy without sacrificing beauty or functionality. Franklin-based podiatric surgeon Cary Gannon launched the line in 2014 as a healthy alternative to other products on the market. During a particular stressful season in life when Cary was working to detoxify in every way — from her relationships to her diet to the products she used on her skin — she started examining the ingredients in her favorite cosmetic lines. Recognizing the need for nail care products that weren’t full of unhealthy chemicals, Cary began research and development in 2013, and Aila was born the following summer. “What sets us apart is our ability to eliminate those chemicals while at the same time maintaining standards of both function and beauty,” Cary says. Aila’s nail lacquers and products are cruelty-free, gluten-free, parabenfree, sulfate-free and vegan and are made without the lengthy list of hardto-pronounce chemicals and ingredients common in most nail polishes, like dibutyl phthalate, bismuth oxychloride and ethyl tosylamide. Aila’s nail polish remover is a 100 percent natural, soy-based product that nourishes and treats the nails, and Prime, Aila’s base coat, is infused with garlic for its nail-strengthening and anti-fungal properties to protect nails and promote growth. And while these American-made, all-natural products are good for your body, they’re also gorgeous. With over 40 shades to choose from, Aila offers a lacquer for every mood. And every color comes with a story. “All of our color stories are something interesting about me or someone I love,” Cary says. Browsing Aila’s website is like reading excerpts from Cary’s diary. Have fun choosing between colors like My 2 Jeffs, a deep navy named after Cary’s ex-husband and current husband who are — you guessed it — both named Jeff; Pinecuporn, a cheerful yellow that gets its name from Cary’s daughter’s mispronunciation of the word “porcupine,” or Tiddlywinks Tea, an opaque nude hue dedicated to Cary’s grandmother and their whimsical childhood tea parties. Choosing a color is like choosing a new friend, and like any good friendship, these lacquers will leave your nails stronger, healthier and more beautiful.

Thistle Farms Thistle Farms' bath and body products, with ingredients like eucalyptus and lavender, are designed to be nurturing and healing, much like the program that inspired them. Started in 1997 by Becca Stevens as a companion to the residential treatment program Magdalene — designed to help survivors of trafficking, addiction and prostitution — Thistle Farms offers women not only employment but an empowering way to participate in their own recovery. In the late ’90s, a small group of Magdalene residents and volunteers would gather in the kitchen of St. Augustine’s Chapel, mixing up lavender bath salts and pouring soy candles. Now the products are carried in stores around the globe. Sales for Thistle Farms merchandise — which also includes home goods, apparel and accessories — topped $4 million last year. The bath and beauty products include a wide range of soaps, soaks, scrubs, balms, lotions and essential oils. One of the newest additions is the Nourishing Body Butter in eucalyptus mint, a lighter version of traditional body butter, which also comes unscented and in citrus wood as well as lavender. The Enriching Body Lotion is made with Moringa oil and a variety of essential oils and is offered in the same three scents as the Exfoliating Body Scrub. They also offer gift sets such as ReEnergize, which includes a body wash, lip balm, muscle soak and shave gel. All products carry the signature Love Heals motto, a reminder of the company’s mission to offer refuge and employment to survivors. The company is still staffed primarily by residents and graduates of the Magdalene program. In addition to being carried in Whole Body stores and on Amazon, the products can be found adjacent to the Café at Thistle Farms in their own retail store, a peaceful, lavender-scented respite on Charlotte Pike.

Anna Molteni and Zach Moore crossed paths while attending Auburn University but didn’t reconnect until almost a decade later. He proposed in a pavilion in Percy Warner Park the day after Christmas 2018. The couple married in June at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Billy Cerveny officiating. The bride’s gown was a Liancarlo design of white and blush shimmer tulle with a satin sash. Her bouquet was by Knestrick by Design. Her bridesmaids’ dresses were in various styles of dove gray by JJ Designs. Anna and Zach chose to use the same altar kneeler from her parents’ wedding ceremony in 1980. The wedding music was by soloist Carly Fair and Russell Davis, and Anna’s father

surprised her with a solo of “Panis Angelicus” in keeping with a family tradition. The reception was at War Memorial Auditorium. Sam Levine played for cocktail hour on the Legislative Plaza. Dinner was catered by Kristen Winston, and dancing to the music of Simply Irresistible followed. The wedding cake was lemon and raspberry by Dessert Designs, and the groom’s cake was a salute to Auburn University made of chocolate truffles. Decorations were by Please Be Seated, Quest Drape, Jim Knestrick and Nashville Event Lighting. Also on board were Jayne Bubis Events, Dallas Wilson Wedding Films, The Dotted Line, The Balloon Guy and Paint Your Event. The bride said,

“The incredible vendors, caterer, event planners, musicians and designers made the wedding beautiful, enjoyable and unique to my personal taste.” Following a wedding trip to Mexican all-inclusive resort Unico Riviera Maya, the newlyweds returned to Nashville where Anna, who holds a masters in Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy from Trevecca Nazarene University, is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice, and Zach is a hotel broker. Their parents are Beth and Tom Molteni of Nashville and Merry Lee and Thomas Moore of Peachtree Corners, Georgia.

The Basics Name: James Perrin Represented by: Tinney Contemporary Education: MA from Boston University, MFA in painting from American University, BFA from Kansas City Art Institute See his work: Dream Nashville, Pinnacle Bank, Creative Artists Agency Website: jamesperrinstudio.com

The Art

Abstract Expressions James Perrin reveals the layers of meaning behind his abstract paintings The amount of time James Perrin spends working on his paintings tends to make itself known through small autobiographical details, as if the paintings are absorbing bits of his personality simply because of the time they’ve spent together. The title of his painting “The Time Before the New” refers to the year it was painted, which was the year before James married, had a son and saw his life forever altered. Small, luminous orbs of pale paint are a recurring image on his canvases, and they represent a body’s white blood cells, the constant protagonist in his family business, Perrin Naturals, which produces natural skin care products and skin cancer treatments. “I like to put things in the paintings that I pull from my life,” James says. “And because the paintings are very abstract, I like for the abstractions to have meaning. That keeps me anchored in the painting and interested in it.” He spends months on each painting, borrowing imagery from sources as diverse as fashion photography, Baroque-era paintings and photographs he’s taken at Walmart. He likes working with this cache of visual references, and he manipulates them digitally until they’re unrecognizable, even after he’s revealed their origins. “Even if you don’t recognize it, the intentionality causes people to believe in the work, regardless of their connection to it,” he says. But his paintings are much more than simply exercises in composition. James, who received the prestigious Joan Mitchell award in 2015, asks big questions with his art. “I’m drawn to these questions on a subconscious level,” he says. “What is conflict and what is resolution? What is beauty? What is chaos? With my paintings, I try to reflect on what life is — life is beauty in the midst of ugliness.” The canvases must have chaotic swirls of color, James explains, so that the sublime white or black paint becomes amplified. He compares his painterly choices to navigating the weather — if all the days are filled with sunshine, you can begin to take it for granted. “We’re able to appreciate good weather only because we know what bad weather is,” he says. “Sometimes even mistakes can turn into opportunities, or something that is chaotic can be resolved into something orderly. You don’t know what goodness is, or pleasure is, until you experience the opposite. So our scope of understanding is limited until we experience the other end of it. “I try to embody all of human experience — whether emotionally or spiritually — and try to put it into an image that reflects our life.” by Laura Hutson Hunter PHotograph by daniel meigs

“Semiosis on the Sea,” 2016, 50 x 64 inches, oil on linen with acrylic resin, plant resin, paint scrapings and Tahitian pearls This painting has been exhibited at the Frist Art Museum, where it shared space with art-world heavyweights like Ellen Gallagher, Franz Ackermann and Wangechi Mutu as part of the 2018 contemporary painting exhibit Chaos and Awe. It takes its form from a woman sitting beneath an umbrella on the beach, her legs bent at the knee. James downplays a conceptual analysis of the work, remaining more interested in compositional elements like the broad violet marks that almost look like wings. “That’s simply a gestural mark that sits on the surface of the painting,” he says.

“The Time Before the New,” 2016, 79 x 96 inches, oil on linen with acrylic resin and paint scrapings For an artist as dedicated to abstract painting as James, “The Time Before the New” seems almost figurative. James has based the work’s central shape on formal elements borrowed from the Hindu god Vishnu — this figure, like Vishnu, has multiple arms reaching in multiple directions. James also draws elements from Spanish Golden Age master Diego Velázquez, particularly his series of royal portraits of Princess Margarita Theresa. The stripes in James’ painting are direct references to a gown the princess wore in Velasquez’s 1659 portrait.

My husband and I used to travel together, but we’re divorced now. I’m determined to start traveling again, and I’ve planned a trip to Barcelona for this fall. I was having drinks recently with a friend of mine and told her about it. She said she’d like to go, so I told her that sounded nice. Because she’d had a couple, I figured she’d forget. She didn’t. In fact she’s been calling me, leaving me messages. I still don’t think I’m ready to travel alone, but now I’m in a difficult situation. I’m pretty sure she’s a heavy drinker, so I don’t want to travel with her. What should I say? —Anonymous, Hillwood Your friend’s memory seems to be pretty sharp, even after she’s knocked back a couple of gimlets. Perhaps you had a second glass of wine you didn’t need. Somehow, your tongue got loosened up. If you think she has a drinking problem, she definitely wasn’t the friend with whom to bare your Barcelona plans, but you seem to have done a good sales job. Now, however, you simply must return her calls, but don’t get into explanations. Tell her you’ve decided to go alone. She didn’t need to get into your business, and you don’t need to get into hers either. Unless she’s a truly close friend, you’re not the one to get involved in an intervention. Next time the two of you get together, make a morning date at the coffee shop. Stay off the subject of travel. Exercise some reservation.

in a Flash My picture has been out there on Facebook lately. It was taken at a party, with me in black tie. A number of my lady friends think it’s a good picture. One of them apparently has developed a crush on me. I’m sure it’s not a joke. I’m getting Facebook messages from her now telling me how attractive she thinks I am. I’m a middle-aged man, and she’s suggesting that we go out for dinner. Quite honestly, I don’t want to. I’m gay, by the way, and it’s no secret. I know the woman, and we run into each other frequently. I’d like to keep her as a friend. Help me get her off my case. —Anonymous, Green Hills

The patent leather pump is on the other foot now, isn’t it? This is probably what women have to put up with all the time, provided they take nice enough pictures. Let’s get down to basics: Is there a chance she doesn’t know you’re gay? (That is a possibility, you know; she may not be paying close attention.) But it may not make any difference if you look that glamorous in a tuxedo. You can tell her you’ve got laundry to fold, but before too long, there will come an evening when everything will have to be folded up and filed away. Surely you can stand to go out to dinner with the woman once. Just suggest that you bring along a friend and that she do the same. Then suggest that you split the tab. That should stop the flirting for now — maybe forever.

Sushi, Please What’s cooking at Sunda and Virago by Carrington Fox

At this sleek and spacious eatery in The Gulch, restaurateur-actor Billy Dec teams with local Fresh Hospitality — the restaurant group behind Biscuit Love, Martin’s Bar-BQue Joint and Vui’s Kitchen — to create a Nashville outpost of his blockbuster Chicago nameplate. At the address of bygone Cantina Laredo, Sunda serves a pan-Asian panoply of poke, noodles, grilled meats and dim sum, along with a roster of nigiri, sashimi and hand rolls. As the anchor brand in Billy’s Rockit Ranch Productions, Sunda debuted in Chicago’s River North neighborhood in 2009 and expanded to Nashville last year. Named for the Sunda Shelf, a geologic formation that encompasses much of Southeast Asia, Sunda mingles the flavors and culinary traditions of Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines — of Billy’s family heritage. An elegantly playful abstract mobile sculpture, suggesting a school of fish darting past the large bar, telegraphs that sushi is a headliner at the restaurant, but the menu abounds with familiar land-based flavors, such as pad thai and grilled street corn. This rice-forward repertoire includes a separate gluten-free dinner menu, loaded with sushi and grilled items such as miso-bronzed black cod, filet mignon and chicken inasal, a Philippines-inspired dish of grilled chicken infused with vinegar, lemongrass and garlic and laden with cherry tomatoes, red onion, achiote glaze and chili-lime sauce. There’s also a vegan dinner menu with steamed scallion buns stuffed with mushrooms, tofu pad thai and veggie rolls. As much as you’ll enjoy the pickled pork belly or the poke with plantains, you’ll relish the people-watching in this dynamic dining district, where dinner and brunch at Sunda delight the expanding global appetites of new Nashville.

It’s hard to believe nearly two decades have passed since Virago debuted its eclectic Asian repertoire in a quirky Music Row building of angled nooks, crannies and dark corners. Since those early days, when founder Chris Hyndman’s adventurous dining concept educated Nashvillians on the boundless culinary possibilities of elevated sushi, Virago has become a big fish in Nashville’s restaurant scene. In 2009, Virago relocated from Music Row to anchor the landmark M Street restaurant group on McGavock Street. This spring, Chris and company launched a third iteration of the restaurant, moving a few doors down the block to a space nearby sister restaurants Moto, Saint Añejo, Whiskey Kitchen and Kayne Prime. Like previous incarnations on Music Row and M Street, Virago 3.0 is a visually stunning enterprise. Ruby-red lighting bathes the dining room in shadowy drama, lending an aura of nightclub to accompany the cuisine. True to its roots, the new-and-improved Virago still offers plenty of private seating in intimate nooks and crannies. Longtime chef Himmi Vasquez continues to oversee the menu of delicacies from land and sea, which, over the years, has earned accolades on every list of superior sushi in town. Think wagyu tataki; rainbow poke tostados with tuna, salmon and hamachi over wontons; wings with umami toffee, chives and ginger; and sushi innovations such as albacore with bourbon-barrel soy, ginger and scallions. The new Virago expands the portfolio of artisanal sushi offerings (as well as the near-encyclopedic collection of Japanese whiskey and sake). For anyone overwhelmed by the opulent options, the Omakase experience allows guests to put themselves in the chef’s hands and enjoy a ride though the creative menu. In a new location with renewed glamour and an expanded array of sushi, there’s no telling where the night might lead, but if history tells us anything, it’s going to be a stylish adventure.

Here to Stay The soothing dark blue and gray tones from the lobby are carried into the guest rooms. The king room, for example, offers ample closet space, an oversized marble desk, a 49inch HD TV and marble bath. The spacious one-bedroom suite, at 747 square feet, offers a separate bedroom, living room with sofa bed, wet bar for entertaining and two 50-inch TVs. Located on Cleghorn Avenue across from The Mall at Green Hills, Hilton Nashville Green Hills is the only full-service hotel in the area.

Hilton Nashville Green Hills

photographs by James Stewart Photography

From the Bevolo copper lanterns handcrafted in New Orleans to the circular fountain at the hotel entrance custom-made by stonemasons in France and inspired by the fountain at the Ritz Paris, the new Hilton Nashville Green Hills is full of surprises. The “boutique” Hilton opened in January and offers 210 guest rooms, including three one-bedroom suites. “We say ‘boutique’ because it is a smaller version of a Hilton,” says Director of Sales Kristen McBryde. Atlanta-based Rabun Architects worked with designers at Nashville’s Collaborative Studio to give the hotel an intimate feel the minute guests enter the lobby. Seating areas are scattered throughout, and the furnishings are modern, yet warm, in soothing tones of navy, cream and gray with pops of kelly green. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide abundant light, and dark blue accent rugs dot the light herringbone floors. A large stone fireplace provides a focal point and the perfect spot for guests to gather when the mercury drops. Kristen says particular effort was made to be sure the design fit with the aesthetic of the area. To that end, local artwork can be seen throughout. Joseph Sulkowski’s paintings of the Iroquois Steeplechase give the hotel a Nashville bent, and they peacefully coexist with the work of abstract painter Ed Nash and the art of clothing-designer-turned-modern-artist Kayce Hughes. The hotel is part of a new commercial development that includes the adjacent Marriott Residence Inn as well as office and retail space, overseen by Chartwell Hospitality in a joint venture with landowner Green & Little. by Whitney Clay

Fancy Meeting You Here

The Härth restaurant and bar, a Hilton standard, has chef Christian Rossit, a native of Italy, at the helm. Fittingly, the American menu has a strong Italian influence, highlighted by a woodburning pizza oven. The restaurant offers a full breakfast buffet and also serves lunch and dinner. At night, the white tablecloths and wine glasses come out. The menu includes items such as lobster ravioli in a shallot cream sauce and pan-seared duck served with goat cheese, pepper strudel and blueberry gastrique.

The SkyBar on the 10th floor of the hotel allows guests to enjoy seasonal cocktails poolside. The rooftop bar offers spectacular views of the treetops, punctuated by the Woodmont Christian Church steeple and downtown in the distance. Gavin Duke with Page | Duke Landscape Architects consulted on the landscape design in the front of the hotel and the SkyBar. To complete the experience, guests can start with a workout at the fitness center before going for a swim.

The hotel has 5,400 square feet of event space, which is already in high demand. So far local organizations have rented space, and it’s perfect for wedding receptions or rehearsal dinners. There’s a private dining room in Härth, which opens onto a patio area, landscaped to give it a private feel, even though it’s in the heart of Green Hills. The flexible ballroom can easily be partitioned off to give guests a smaller or larger room, depending on their needs.

Day Trip 1910

In 1889, the Ladies’ Hermitage Association, one of the oldest women’s organizations and historic preservation organizations in the country, was tenacious in its efforts to protect Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage. In subsequent years, the women had much more fun hosting events like the Spring Outing to fund their preservation projects. At those first luncheons, members and young membersto-be left Nashville’s Hotel Tulane in buggies and took the long ride out to The Hermitage. Fortunately, transportation and roads have greatly improved since 1910, and more than 220,000 visitors — including thousands of fourth graders as junior docents — find it much easier to make their way to the historic property every year.
