Nashvillian of the Year Award To Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics) Presented by Kiwanis Club International, Nashville, TN The Kiwanis Club of Nashville is proud to announce Dr. Ming Wang, director of Wang Vision 3D Cataract and LASIK Center, world-renowned laser eye surgeon, author, and philanthropist as the 35th recipient of their coveted Nashvillian of the Year Award for 2015. Dr. Wang receives the award by exemplifying the qualities of Outstanding Nashvillian of the Year and the Kiwanis International Vision. Dr. Wang worked diligently to make the world a better place, when he established the Wang Foundation, helping patients from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. “It is difficult to know anyone who works as hard giving back to the community and changing the lives of children as much as Dr. Ming Wang,” said Kenny Markanich, president, Kiwanis Club of Nashville. “He has helped countless children through the charitable outreach of his foundation, giving free surgeries to repair their vision.” Dr. Wang actively contributes to the Nashville community as the founding president of the Tennessee Chinese Chamber of Commerce and as an honorary president of the Tennessee American-Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The mission of these two chambers is to help educate Tennessee businesses about China, helping Tennessee to increase its export to China. He is also a co-founder of Tennessee Immigrant and Minority Business Group, an organization that pro-

vides support to the diverse cultural and ethnic businesses in our community. For the past 35 years, the 1 0 0 - y e a rold civic club has bestowed the annual accolade upon an individual who has gone beyond the expected scope of their abilities for the betterment and benefit of the Nashville community. The selection committee was spearheaded by George H. Armistead, III, one of the three original architects of the award (along with the late Gillespie Buchannan and the late Ralph Brunson). Past winners of note include Martha Ingram, Roy Acuff, Jack Massey, Phil Bredesen, Vince Gill, Tim Corbin, Mike Curb, Frank Wycheck, Darrell Waltrip and Mayor Karl Dean. A program saluting Dr. Wang was held at the Patron Club, Friday, July 29th at 11:30am. Dr. Wang was presented with a com-

memorative plaque along a commissioned caricature.

Wow, what an issue! A few months ago, we were thrilled to find out that Zac Posen and Kelsea Ballerini had agreed to pose for our May cover, but after reviewing their hectic schedules, we quickly realized the best time to do the shoot would be the morning of the Symphony Fashion Show. You know, the day that Zac would be showing his Fall 2017 collection to a sold-out crowd and Kelsea would be performing three songs and our Nfocus team would be working all day to cover the event. And did I mention it was just two days before we sent this issue to the printer? Despite the early morning — Zac, Kelsea and their fabulous teams arrived at the Schermerhorn even before many of the vendors loaded in — the fashion designer

and country star brought such fun energy to the shoot, dancing along to a soundtrack of Britney Spears and taking breaks to film Boomerang videos on their phones between shots. Our photographer Daniel Meigs captured so many stunning photos that we had a hard time narrowing down a cover image. (Keep an eye on @nfocusmagazine on Instagram this month to see more of our favorite shots.) In addition to all of the gorgeous coverage of the Symphony Fashion Show (page 61), this issue also features our annual Homes of Distinction. From Kelly Clarkson’s Hendersonville manse to the former Oak Hill retreat of Tammy Wynette, we’ve got seven jawdropping houses for you to admire. See them all on page 66. BY NaNcY FloYd

behind the scenes

McLean Barbieri In Nashville, we love a good family business, so we love how McLean Barbieri is carrying on the legacy of her mother, Lillias Johnston, at local design firm Annali Interiors. McLean cut her teeth at two dynamic design firms in San Francisco before returning to Nashville in 2010 to join Annali’s team. At the beginning of this year, McLean became her mother’s business partner, taking on responsibilities such as revamping the firm’s advertising and social media presence, scoping out new talent and carrying the business into the next generation. Annali Interiors is currently made up of six interior designers, each with her own unique style. For a taste of McLean’s style, visit the newly opened Germantown Inn, the neighborhood’s first boutique hotel. She more or less designed the entire hotel, which is located in an historic 1870s home and features six beautiful suites. Or, keep an eye out this month for an article in The New York Times, which will showcase the home McLean helped local artist Vadis Turner design in the building Vadis and her husband bought on Third Avenue South. by Wesley H. Gallagher

The Basics

Name: McLean Johnston Barbieri Profession/Title: Interior designer/ partner, Annali Interiors Hometown: Nashville Zip code: 37215 Years in Nashville: 18 plus 6 ½ Number of times you’ve changed up the interiors in your home: I have moved a lot as an adult, and I always take the opportunity to change each time we move.

When you have out-of-town guests visiting, where do you take them? The Sculpture Trail at Cheekwood is a favorite. I love to show Nashville’s ever-more-fabulous restaurant scene (such as Bastion or Little Octopus) and then, if the mood is right, Santa’s Pub. What are your favorite locally made products? Ceri Hoover bags and Nisolo jewelry What are you currently reading? Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff. I am always reading novels and have a shelf in my bedroom of books that I’m reading next. If the shelf gets low, I get jittery and head to Parnassus for more recommendations.

Who is the Nashvillian whose personal style you most admire? Betsy Wallace Taylor. I got my first short haircut over 20 years ago because of her hair, and I still admire her effortless fashion sense. Nobody makes jeans and a button-down shirt look as good! What is your biggest pet peeve? Bad grammar What was your first job? I worked at H2O at The Mall at Green Hills selling makeup and bath products. My first interior design job was for a firm in San Francisco where I did meaningful work — like change all the bulbs in a client’s home to rose-colored so she looked good in every room. What is your most treasured possession? The Lucite-armed chair [pictured] was in my parents’ library as a child, and I was thrilled when my mom gave it to me when I moved back to Nashville. What is your favorite thing about your own home? Our home has two large rooms at the back that work perfectly for entertaining with kids. We use the downstairs space as a playroom. Kids can run right into the backyard while adults can enjoy their own music and conversation in the upstairs living room. Oh, and the wallpaper in my guest bathroom, I love that too. If you had to give someone one piece of interior design advice, what would it be? Don’t be afraid of leaving an area blank. People move into a new house and they try to fill all the rooms immediately. Living in a house and waiting to buy quality items is always a better plan. What interior design trend do you love, and what’s one you think won’t last? I am so glad that color is back in a big way. I think that rooms dominated by mid-century modern furniture are on the way out. Is there one piece of architecture or décor you think all homes should have? No. Every family is different, and every home should reflect its owners.

Andrew Jackson Birthday and Brew Fest 3.11.17

This March marked the 250th birthday of President Andrew Jackson, and before The Hermitage welcomed our current president, they hosted a more casual affair on the lawn at the Birthday and Brew Festival. Despite unseasonably cold temperatures and a light snowfall that morning, guests packed into two tents to sample local beer and birthday cake in honor of our seventh president. A panel of judges had the oh-so-difficult task of sampling cake from every bakery present before naming The Cupcake Collection the official birthday cake of Andrew Jackson’s 250th.

3.29.17

Any excuse to party at the Schermerhorn is a good one, and for the Stradivarius Society, the annual spring dinner is a highly anticipated opportunity to enjoy an exclusive night out with our world-class Nashville Symphony. Guests enjoyed a lively cocktail hour in the West Lobby before sitting down to dinner in the Laura Turner Concert Hall and a private concert from the orchestra, which included their symphonic take on a few hits by The Beatles.

Supporters of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build were treated to a VIP sneak peek at the brand new Dillard’s at The Mall at Green Hills at Couture Construction. The party was held in the department store the night before it officially opened to the public, allowing the 700-plus guests to browse the chic new digs before anyone else. Future Habitat homeowner Ronza Williams looked fabulous in an outfit styled by Tina Adams and donated by Bill Dillard, but the true prize was knowing that 100 percent of the evening’s proceeds would go toward building materials for her new home, which will begin construction in late April.

More than 500 friends and supporters of Best Buddies packed the Omni Hotel for the nonprofit’s annual Gala and Casino Night. Demonstrating the strong bond that exists between Best Buddies and the Nashville Predators, honorary co-chairs Roman Josi and Pekka Rinne were on hand to welcome guests to the fabulous festivities. Big Yellow Bird Bash 4.1.17

Fans of Nashville Public Television bedecked themselves in cheery shades of yellow for the Big Yellow Bird Bash, NPT’s annual spring fundraiser, held once again at Houston Station. Guests walked the yellow carpet, perused a silent auction packed with goodies, nibbled on bites from Bacon & Caviar and sipped tasty libations, including Old Hickory Bourbon iced tea (the evening’s signature cocktail), before making a stop in the photo booth and taking a twirl on the dance floor. by NaNcy Floyd photographs by Will peDigo anD shane burkeen continued on page 24

Spider Monkey VIP Preview 4.3.17

as the Nashville Zoo prepared to open a brand new exhibit, Spider Monkey: Treetop Passage, a select group of donors were the first to marvel at the agile and adorable critters at a VIP Preview. The first of four new exhibits planned to open this year, Treetop Passage was finished “about six seconds before the party began,” or so joked the zoo’s president, Rick Schwartz. Rick — along with Board Chair Julie Walker and Jennifer Frist, the Grow Wild Campaign chair — honored Dottie Frist for funding the exhibit, and the zoo celebrated her support in an extremely special way: by carving her name in a heart on one of the trees in the exhibit. by NaNcy Floyd photographs by Daniel Meigs

as the 25th annual A Tennessee Waltz approached, the Ladies’ & Gentlemen’s Committee was honored at a lively affair at the Belle Meade Country Club. The Grand Tour Channeling country music legends with Interfaith Dental Clinic Sean and Marissa Young, Spencer and Andrea Jones, Rebecca and Dan Clark

ocation, location, location! When the team at Interfaith Dental Clinic plans their annual gala, it’s not enough to simply set a theme and encourage guests to dress appropriately; they coordinate the food, the auction and the venue to match. For this year’s Country Legends on the Cumberland, the nonprofit, which provides affordable dental care to low-income families, rented out the George Jones Entertainment Complex downtown on Second Avenue, a perfect location for the casual costume party celebrating the late great heroes of country music. The crowd — which included a Dolly Parton, a Minnie Pearl and more Stetsons than we could count — spent the cocktail hour browsing the George Jones Museum. The impressive space, which spans the entire second floor, is filled with an assortment of memorabilia from the star’s life and career — from bedazzled suits and gold records to a collection of guns and autographed NFL footballs. The white piano from his personal sitting room is even on display as is the giant rocking chair that used to grace his front yard. When it was time for dinner, guests headed upstairs to the third floor where they were greeted with a massive silent auction offering everything from dental packages to a Blake Shelton-autographed guitar. Continuing the laid-back country theme, the buffet boasted chili, corn pudding, peach moonshine shrimp, cornbread and Brussels sprouts. Dessert trifles were served in mini mason jars. Farm tables topped with burlap and bunches of wildflowers livened up the rustic space, and in an adorable and oh-so-apropos seating choice, Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrels were surrounded by stools as additional tables. After dinner, guests channeled their inner country legends and took the stage with The Entertainment, a live karaoke band. Before leaving, everyone was sure to stop by the photo booth, posing in front of a Broadway backdrop with instruments, feather boas and giant toothbrushes and showing off those pearly whites. by Nancy Floyd photographs by Eric England

High Class Honky-Tonkin’ Bright Lights, Nashville Nights brings Broadway to the ballroom

O

n a cold March night, tourists braved unseasonable temperatures to visit the legendary honky-tonks of Lower Broadway. Only a few blocks away, more than 500 formally attired guests were enjoying a similar — albeit much warmer — experience at Bright Lights, Nashville Nights, the fourth annual Spring Soirée benefiting the Tennessee Kidney Foundation. In the most unique interpretation we’ve ever seen of bringing the outdoors in, co-chairs Shanna Belott and Josephine Vandevender recreated the famous entertainment district inside the Omni Nashville Hotel. Storefront replicas of popular bars — Tootsies, Paradise Park Trailer Resort and Acme Feed & Seed — street musicians and even a pedal tavern provided all the fun of hitting the ordinarily crowded street without any of the bother. Inside the ballroom, understated black, white and gray tones provided an intimate feel that was definitely more nightclub than juke joint. Tables were covered with black or white linens with alternating white or black Chiavari chairs while long tables sported black and white patterned fabrics. At each table, silver vases overflowing with white roses, hydrangeas, freesias, lilies and seasonal greenery created an appropriately sophisticated setting for the gourmet four-course meal prepared by Omni executive chef David Harker. Following dinner, Raymond Hakim gave a tribute to the late Gerald Schulman, memorializing his work as a respected nephrologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the attention he brought to kidney health. A video telling the story of Amy Peterson’s gift of a kidney to her father, Walt, provided another touching moment, as did the stories of Johnny Hayes and Malissa Rutledge, who use the organization’s services. Jenny Gill and Jason White rounded out the program with stellar musical performances. By the time the night was over — but before the real honky-tonks closed down — more than $240,000 was raised so that Tennessee Kidney Foundation can continue providing direct assistance to kidney patients and programs such as free kidney disease screenings and prevention education.

Sharing Secrets Drawing inspiration from Buddhist art at the Frist Gala Patrons Party

I

t’s always a treat to see how the Frist Gala co-chairs will interpret the art museum’s exceptional exhibits into a party theme for the black-tie affair, and each year, guests are given a small, yet promising, glimpse of what the gala holds at the Patrons Party. For this year’s intimate gathering of donors and supporters, co-chairs Julie Dretler and Betsy Wilt transformed The Frist Center into an ethereal Asian-inspired supper club. The evening began in the auditorium, where Jenny Richter Corts worked with Please Be Seated and The Tulip Tree to convert the otherwise stark space into a posh lounge for cocktails, Asian-inspired hors d’œuvres and Japanese sake, which was handed out at the door. A striking assemblage of orchids, succulents and Yoshino cherry blossoms drew in guests, adding a sleek sophistication to the room. As to be expected, the true centerpiece for the event was the Secrets of Buddhist Art: Tibet, Japan and Korea exhibit in the Ingram Gallery. Partygoers took full advantage of the cocktail hour to explore the vast exhibit, which includes an astonishing array of striking and ornate sculptures and paintings that depict Buddhist practices from the Mahayana and Vajrayana branches of the religion. One of the most remarkable pieces on display is the Tibetan sand mandala, constructed over the course of five days by Tibetan monks when the exhibit first opened at The Frist. The exquisite construction — which is truly a feat in discipline, precision and patience — will be on display for the duration of the exhibit and ceremoniously destroyed upon its close. Just outside of the gallery, tables were set up in the Grand Hall, adorned in dreamy hues of soft aqua and rose gold and accented with subtle touches like bronze lotus flower silverware and light amber water goblets. Kristen Winston took a cue from the evening’s favor — a copy of Nobu: The Cookbook — for the Asian-inspired feast, which included sesame-crusted ahi tuna, Korean bibimbap and a yuzu lemon tart. If this evening was but a peek at what’s in store for the Frist Gala, guests are truly in for an unforgettable night.

Making the World a Better Place Athena Awards honors exceptional female leaders

T

hreats of dire thunderstorms could not keep family, friends, co-workers and well wishers from heading to Oz Arts Nashville for the 27th annual Athena Awards to celebrate the women from across Nashville and Middle Tennessee nominated for this special recognition. Each year, Nashville joins 500 communities worldwide to celebrate Women’s History Month by honoring remarkable women who embody the traits of Athena — courage, valor, strength and reason. While guests found their seats in the Grand Salon, the nominees waited patiently in the Ultra Lounge, which served as their “green room.” The group included the 23 award doyennes being recognized for their career successes, community service and encouragement to women and the 25 Young Professional Leadership Award hopefuls, women who use their vision and persistence to reach out and open the way for others. Quietly standing by themselves were the eight students who received a total of $17,000 in scholarship funds — a program unique to the Nashville awards — and new laptops from Dell. Nominee Pat Shea said admiringly of the scholarship recipients, “The world is going to be a better place because of these girls.” The program began with words from chair Mendy Mazzo and co-chair Roxianne Bethune before Megan Barry presented the Young Professional Leadership Award to Tameka Winston, TSU professor and SiriusXM radio show host. When Megan described the Athena recipient as someone with for-profit and nonprofit experience, a surprised look came across Pat Shea’s face as she realized that she was this year’s oh-so deserving choice. As Megan gave Pat a huge hug, the room responded with a standing ovation. At the cocktail reception that followed, there were more hugs all around and, of course, lots of photos with all the women. Since its inception, the Nashville Athena Awards has been a unique community-supported program managed by the Cable Foundation and organized through the collaborative efforts of local women’s organizations in partnership with businesses and individuals.

Slam Dunk Shaquille O’Neal entertains at the Great Futures Gala

I

Dan Jernigan, Vicki Smith

t was a huge night at the Great Futures Gala when the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee welcomed Shaquille O’Neal as this year’s special guest. This event is known for bringing in big celebrities — Rob Lowe, Martin Short and Martin Sheen have all appeared in recent years — but the organization has never welcomed a bigger guest than Shaq. At over 7 feet tall, the former basketball star towered over all of the kids — and adults — that he encountered throughout the night, giving new meaning to being someone to look up to. Local sports broadcaster Rudy Kalis interviewed Shaq onstage in a presentation that turned out to be both incredibly poignant and hilarious. A former Club Kid himself, Shaq reminisced about what the organization meant to him as a youngster in New Jersey and the important life lessons he learned there. He also directed a lot of his wisdom and advice to the kids in the crowd, encouraging them to focus on education, believe in themselves and listen to the caring adults in their lives. When he wasn’t inspiring the crowd, he was cracking them up with stories about why he got banned from coaching his son’s Little League team ( for taking the kids to Hooters) and why a Ferrari was the worst investment he ever made (not fitting and having to cut the roof off). And after coaxing Rudy to rap, Shaq even sang a medley of “white guy classics” like “The Gambler” and “Broken Wings.” The most entertaining and endearing part of the night was when five Club Kids, ranging in age from 6 to 18, took the stage to grill Shaq on everything from his favorite cartoon (Tom and Jerry) to his favorite player (Steph Curry). The night ended with an impromptu dance party onstage with Shaq and the kids, proving that not only do great futures start here, great memories do too. by Nancy Floyd photographs by Daniel Meigs

Dancing Machines Putting their best foot forward at Dancing for Safe Haven

F

riends and family of six local luminaries were dancing on air at the eighth annual Dancing for Safe Haven held at the Hilton Nashville Downtown. This year’s participants — Kyle Allen, Billy Dawson, Jaimie Robinson, Tricia Spehr, Vivek Surti and Christie Wilson — donated their time and loads of energy to train with professional dancers for our city’s version of Dancing With the Stars and to raise valuable funds for Safe Haven Family Shelter. As the cocktail hour ended, attendees needed no encouragement to find their places in the ballroom for dinner and the show. However, chair Anita Greenwood Cash had them out of their seats after she opened the program with a raucous number, accompanied by Nashville Ballroom & Company dancers. In a touching moment, CEO Joyce Lavery and Board Chair John Nefflen presented Dawn Bunetta with the 2017 Hero Award, which brought everyone to their feet yet again. The highlight of this event is always the dancing, and after dessert, it was time to get on with the show. Judges Marcela Gomez, Marcia Masulla and Bill Vandiver had their work cut out as each pair of dancers twirled and spun across the dance floor in an effort to impress. They chose Vivek for the Judges’ Favorite Award for his Latin medley with partner Juanita Simanekova. Tricia cha-cha’d her way to receive the Fundraising Favorite Award for raising more than $60,000 for Safe Haven. The Audience Favorite went to Christie, who danced her way into their hearts as she and her partner, six-time participant Christopher Wayne, cut loose with a foxtrot that went from demure to red hot in a flash. But the biggest winner of the night was Safe Haven Family Shelter, which raised more than $250,000 to promote stability for and provide life-changing services to homeless families. Inspired by the fancy footwork of their friends, everyone abandoned their seats to join the pros on the dance floor and give it a whirl.

Stories of Hope Best-selling author Jeannette Walls inspires at Reaching New Heights

T

he Reaching New Heights luncheon for Cumberland Heights reached new heights indeed with a record-size crowd showing up for the annual women’s fundraiser at Hillwood Country Club. Co-chairs Grace Clayton and Kathleen Estes joked that they’d like to take all of the credit for the sold-out event, but they knew the real draw was keynote speaker Jeannette Walls, the best-selling author of The Glass Castle, The Silver Star and Half Broke Horses. Fans of The Glass Castle — which appeared to be just about everyone in the room — were thrilled to hear Jeannette recount many of the memoir’s most remarkable stories along with several other tales from her unconventional childhood. Alternating between humor and poignancy, Jeannette took the audience on a journey from her troubled upbringing to her discontented young adulthood to the place of peace and acceptance she found once she learned to embrace her past. And at an event benefiting Cumberland Heights, which provides treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, Jeannette’s heartfelt words about her alcoholic father resonated with everyone in the crowd, particularly a story about how, as a child, she hunted for an imaginary monster called Demon with her dad in the Arizona desert. “He couldn’t battle his own demons, but he gave me the tools to battle mine,” she shared. Jeannette proved to be as down-to-earth, funny and warm as she comes across in her books, chatting and posing for photos with women before the luncheon and long after it concluded. For someone who has been wildly successful in her career, it’s obvious Jeannette’s true passion is finding ways to use her past to help others. Prior to the luncheon, when asked how it feels to share her story with a roomful of women who have battled addiction or been touched by it in some way, she said, “It doesn’t get any better than that. That’s what it’s about. That’s what storytelling is about ... It’s connecting with people and having your story mean something.” Her story certainly meant something to this crowd and to Cumberland Heights, which raised $140,000 at the luncheon for the women’s program, funds that will go a long way in offering redemption and hope to countless women across Middle Tennessee and beyond.

The Young and the Impressive Top 30 Under 30 honors those who give back Callie Courter, Sarah Beth Imperi, Rachael Pointer, Kristyn Edwards

I

t comes as little surprise that Nashville is teeming with many accomplished men and women under the age of 30, and at this year’s Top 30 Under 30, it proved once again that the future of the community at large is in good hands. Packing a new venue at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Nashville, guests moved and mingled on the upper concourse level for cocktails and a silent auction as the sun set on what would be an honorable evening to come. The event supports the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which believes that “money buys science, and science buys life.” Guests convened for the second part of the evening as dinner was served while several families with children dealing with cystic fibrosis were recognized and honored. A new tradition brought to life a visual reminder of the beauty in the world as artist Heidi Schwartz constructed a live painting throughout the evening, which was auctioned off to the highest bidder at the end of the night. The party’s highlight event — Bid for a Cure — kept emcee Evan Farmer busy as patrons dug into their pocketbooks, raising over $165,000, well exceeding this year’s goal. Each honoree competed heartily to be the largest contributor toward that number, and it was nothing short of spectacular that Margaret Marchetti raised a record amount of more than $31,000 for the event. Perhaps honoree Julia Bonner summarized the evening best by saying, “Not only was the evening a beautiful celebration of talent, but it also emphasized the impactful work that the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation does every day to advance progress towards a cure for cystic fibrosis. I was so honored to be part of it.”

Creative Potential Celebrating the city’s burgeoning fashion industry at Fashion Forward Gala

A

s the culmination of Nashville Fashion Week, the Fashion Forward Gala always proves itself a chic affair, and this year was no exception. Guests arrived at Track One in the recently revitalized Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood to a beautiful display in a converted warehouse, thanks to Amos Gott of AmosEvents. The industrial nature of the space was softened by white drapery hanging overhead, tables adorned with lush greenery and soft lighting strung from the ceiling. After holding more than 100 events throughout the week, NFW co-founders Connie Cathcart-Richardson, Marcia Masulla and Mike Smith worked tirelessly alongside gala co-chairs Kimberly Lewis and Gen Sohr to provide attendees a glimpse into the burgeoning world of fashion in Nashville. While designer Natalie Chanin of Alabama Chanin spoke of fashion “becoming a force of good across our region and the world,” guests enjoyed a three-course dinner prepared by Chef ’s Market Catering. Singer-songwriter Shelly Colvin, wearing Cavanagh Baker, serenaded the room while guitarist Adam Landry provided live entertainment. With a display of his gilded and adorned photographs behind him, this year’s Fashion Forward Fund recipient — local photographer Brett Warren — delivered a touching speech focused on his love of family and city. Sandra Lipman garnered this year’s Style Icon Award while established Nashville clothiers Ellen and David Levy were presented with the Legacy Award. Lucy Pop Salon’s Renae Morton received the Rising Star Award, and Cassie Kelly accepted the Point of View Award for her online platform Womanista. Barrett Ward was granted the Fashion Forward Award for his work empowering women through Fashionable, and Face of Fashion Award winner Renee Peters was stunning in a sustainably designed dress by Sophia Kah. After dinner, guests, models and designers danced the night away, enjoying cocktails specially crafted for the event by Nashville Ice Lab, and every attendee left with a memento in hand as a reminder of the creative potential of the Nashville fashion community.

Model of Success Friends & Fashion draws largest crowd yet

F

riends & Fashion, which benefits the Friends of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, has grown in popularity every year since it began 27 years ago. In fact, the event has grown so much that this year it moved to the Music City Center to accommodate the crowds and to increase awareness for the Friends’ mission, all while raising funds to support the outstanding services that the volunteer organization provides to patients and their families, as well as clinicians and staff at the hospital. Co-chairs Kristen Greer, Shawn Haile and Andrea Powell took advantage of the vast space outside the Karl F. Dean Grand Ballroom to display an array of items available at the silent auction. As sun poured through the skylights, more than 700 women with mimosas in hand made their way down the display tables. At the end, their glasses were topped off and lipstick touched up — thanks to reps from Chanel brandishing every color of lip gloss — before they moved to the ballroom for lunch. As an adorable part of the program, guest speaker and emcee Elisabeth Hasselbeck used her skills gained as a host on The View for a quick Q-and-A with two of this year’s runway stars. The stars were 19 children, ranging from age 5 to 19, who are current or former patients at the children’s hospital. They modeled the latest spring fashions for the younger set courtesy of Belk and stole the show from the professional models presenting the generous retailer’s spring lines. Proceeds from this year’s Friends & Fashion helped fund the organization’s $1 million pledge to support expanded programs and services in pediatric cancer as well as the Program for Children with Medically Complex Needs, which helps families of children with multiple health issues navigate the complicated health care system. The Friends have been making a difference in the quality of children’s health care since 1972, making them a model of caring and support for patients, families and our community.

Real Talk Power of the Purse welcomes Glennon Doyle Melton

C

hange the game; change Middle Tennessee; change the world. It was an inspiring mandate from Power of the Purse co-chairs Jody Mattison and Ellen Hoffman as they took the stage at the beginning of the annual women’s luncheon. And how exactly can such change be created? By investing in The Women’s Fund, of course, and by extension, women and girls in need in our community. This 19th annual celebration of women was held, once again, at the Music City Center. More than 750 women filled the Karl F. Dean Grand Ballroom for the always uplifting luncheon, stopping first to browse the purses up for grabs in the silent auction and dig deep in their own pocketbooks for this worthy cause. Demetria Kalodimos resumed emceeing duties for another year, acknowledging the sponsors and spotlighting honorary chair Martina McBride. This year’s keynote speaker — best-selling author, blogger and activist Glennon Doyle Melton — was particularly enthused to see Martina in the crowd. “I just want to talk about the fact that Martina McBride is in the room because I’m only calm about it on the outside,” she joked. Sharing the stage for an honest Q-and-A with Ruth Ann Harnisch, Glennon’s trademark candor and humor were fully on display as she chatted openly about her past struggles with addiction, her religious convictions, her divorce and her commitment to serve women and girls through her nonprofit Together Rising. Thanks to her say-anything attitude and relatable life lessons, Glennon has gained access into the hearts and lives of countless women through her online community, Momastery, and her two best-selling memoirs, Carry On, Warrior and Love Warrior. In her writing and in person, she is unapologetically real about life’s beauty and brutality, encouraging others to join the conversation and engage with one another on the issues that enrage and impassion them — an emphatic plea that everyone can benefit from, male or female, and one that united this room of powerful women as they returned to their own communities ready to create change.

International Flair Tiffany Circle’s impact goes beyond our borders

T

he Tennessee Tiffany Circle — a dedicated group of women who generously donate their treasure, time and talent to support the American Red Cross — held its Spring Gathering at the striking Belle Meade home of Barbara and Greg Hagood. (This gathering is the one annual event where the gents are invited for a glimpse into the meaningful service these ladies provide.) The foyer filled up quickly as everyone wanted to welcome David Meltzer, general counsel and chief international officer of the American Red Cross, who arrived from Washington, D.C., for a whirlwind of events in our city. Before opening the program, Katie Crumbo, vice chair of the Nashville Area Tiffany Circle, persuaded guests to move further into the house with the promise of food and a full bar on the terrace. Barbara Bovender, who needs no introduction, has been a driving force behind the growth of the Tennessee Tiffany Circle, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Nevertheless, she introduced herself before welcoming David, whom she knows through her national and international work with the Red Cross, including proposing the Tiffany Circle concept in other countries. We anticipate she will be as successful abroad as she is at home. With 61 members, the Tennessee chapter is one of the largest and most engaged in the nation. David described the Red Cross activities overseas: disaster preparedness programs, the Haiti Assistance Program, recovery programs in Nepal and the Philippines, and the campaign to vaccinate against rubella and measles. The group listened intently as he told poignant stories about the wonderful program that helps reunite families following wars and natural disasters. As the night wound down, the ladies received a clever parting gift — a red leather, logo-embossed luggage tag. It was a fitting thank you for these women who support the work of the Red Cross down the street, across the country and around the world.

F

or someone who’s never been to Nashville before, Zac Posen sure has a lot of friends here. His admirers came out in droves to give the fashion designer a warm Music City welcome at the sold-out Nashville Symphony Fashion Show. Longtime pal and haute couture model Karen Elson — who has known Zac since he was 15 years old — brought along her adorable daughter, Scarlett, to watch her old friend’s Fall 2017 runway show at the Schermerhorn. Before the party, Karen reminisced about their early friendship in New York when she was starting out in modeling and Zac was launching his fashion career. “You met him, and you knew he was going to be a star,” she said. “There were no ifs or buts about it.” Karen was thrilled for Zac to visit Nashville and fall so in love with the city. “You know what he’s been saying all day? How much he loves it here, how lovely everyone is. He’s been charmed by Nashville, and that makes me really proud,” she gushed. The feeling is mutual; everyone who worked with the designer during his whirlwind visit fell head over heels for him. Country star Kelsea Ballerini, who performed at the fashion show, was smitten with Zac himself and his stunning gowns, which she wore at various events throughout the week. (At our cover photo shoot the morning of the show, they were scheming about some of Kelsea’s upcoming award show appearances, so don’t be surprised to see her popping up on the red carpet in more of Zac’s designs in the future.) As for the fashion show itself, Kelsea looked ethereal in a sheer pale blue gown from Zac’s spring collection, joking, “I feel like a fairy in this dress” as she twirled for photos. Chaired by Shaun Inman and Sheila Shields and hosted by Allison DeMarcus, the Symphony Fashion Show raises crucial funds for the Nashville Symphony’s artistic, education and community engagement programs. More than 750 guests attended this year’s event, partying alongside Zac and Kelsea at the VIP Patrons Party in the East Lobby and upstairs in Club Zac, a lively gathering for the young and fashionable crowd. by nancy floyd photographs by Eric England and Daniel Meigs continued on page 62

123 Summit Lane by Holly Hoffman phoTOgraphs by Solomon Davis, Showcase Photographers

In a quiet Hendersonville neighborhood, along a wooded cul-de-sac, through double iron gates and down a winding drive sits an impressive 20,000-square-foot home at 123 Summit Lane. Situated on 4 park-like acres overlooking Old Hickory Lake, this is currently home to Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock’s growing family. The breathtaking entry with double circular staircases and chic formal rooms transitions seamlessly to the casually elegant — and very livable — family areas. Despite the grand scale, these spaces are warm thanks to Brazilian walnut floors, concrete and stainless steel countertops, an abundance of natural light and magnificent views of Old Hickory Lake from every window. The two-story great room leads to the airy family room, breakfast room and a luxury kitchen, outfitted with the finest appliances, that all open to the sweeping veranda. The downstairs master suite is an intimate, plush getaway with a curved wall of windows overlooking the lake, tray ceiling and massive fireplace. Other bedrooms and a two-level study — also with

lake views — are on two upper levels. The daylight basement is an indoor playground for all ages. Everyone can enjoy the theater room, and grown-ups can belly up to a cowboy-themed bar while kids pull all-nighters in the bunk room. The area connects to the poolside loggia where an equally impressive outdoor playground was designed by ßber-talented landscape architect Ben Page. Perfect for relaxing alone or entertaining a crowd, the space has a 30-by-100-foot gunite saltwater pool, two spas and a pool house. Beyond the pool, there is a sand volleyball court, in-ground trampoline, wooden play set, greenhouse and private boat dock with hydraulic lift. Kelly and Brandon are building another home for their busy brood, but they are leaving the next owners with a fabulous retreat with seven bedrooms, eight full baths, three half-baths and four floors of fun.

624 Westview Avenue by Holly Hoffman phoTOs by Derek Darmstaedter with Household Photography

Working with architects Mark Harrison and Ron Ferris, the owners overlooked no details when designing this understated, lovingly maintained home — a true English Tudor on 1.63 lushly landscaped acres on a peaceful Belle Meade street. Arched doorways, tall wainscoting, custom millwork and hand-forged light fixtures are some of the exceptional finishes throughout. Built to the level of old Tudors and planned for today’s lifestyle, the very livable setting offers 8,505 square feet of everything on an active family’s wish list. The downstairs — with its generously sized rooms, high ceilings and abundant windows with transoms — was built with entertaining in mind. The elegant living room and family room with oversized stone fireplace are inviting spots. The banquet-sized dining room with a large bay window easily seats 18 while a breakfast room by the expansive granite kitchen is perfect for everyday meals. And there is always room for an overnight visitor in the welcoming guest suite. Up the grand front staircase and past a cozy window seat, the master suite awaits on one side and four bedrooms on the other. The impressive master suite contains a dressing area with ample built-in storage and an adjacent office. Each additional bedroom has an en suite bath and roomy closets. Just beyond the last bedroom is a media room with an automatic drop-down screen. It could easily double as a playroom complete with a stage, perfect for little ones to put on plays. Another wonderful space for children is the park-like backyard that extends to the dead-end street behind the home. From any of the stone patios, adults can oversee activity and enjoy a glass of wine amid the established gardens in this beautifully cultivated, private space. With their children grown and out of the house, the owners are ready to pass on this home to the next family who will undoubtedly create wonderful memories in these magnificent surroundings.

712 Bowling Avenue Address: 712 Bowling Ave., Nashville, TN 37215 List Price: $1,375,000 Contact: Rick French (615-604-2323), French King Fine Properties

Location, location, location is the oft-used mantra of real estate agents. In the case of 712 Bowling Ave., there could not be a better description. The unbeatable convenience of this prime corner lot at Golf Club Lane and Bowling Avenue and verdant .77-acre expanse of lawn elevate this paramount property to ne plus ultra status. The circa-1920 neoclassical revival style of the home instantly garners one’s attention, evoking the pillared stateliness of many homes and institutions of that era. And while the curb appeal of the manse itself reads estatelike, once inside the grand entry, there is a welcoming coziness. Perfect for a family or couple, the 3,427 square feet of space is so thoughtfully designed that it appears much larger. While suitable for expansion (with no restrictive overlay), it appears totally unnecessary. The charm and character of the original era are highlighted with graceful arches, gleaming hardwood floors and matching solariums with walls of windows allowing the light to fill each room. While no structural changes have been made, the renovated kitchen and three and a half baths more than accommodate modern aesthetic standards while maintaining the integrity of the home. Kudos to landscape architect Tara Armistead for the transformation of the rear yard into an enticing outdoor living room. In fact, the entire four-bedroom home — which has been professionally decorated, landscaped and impeccably maintained — exudes an urban sophistication. From the wildly entertaining animal print runner blanketing the elegantly curved foyer staircase to the inviting masonry fireplace and stone terrace anchoring the back lawn, the juxtaposition of the near-century-old philosophy of beauty and today’s creative norms has been perfectly achieved. by Gloria Houghland phoTOgraphs by Donna Yancey

4121 Franklin Pike by Nancy Floyd phoTOgraphs by Bradley and Addison Ryan of Eesome Co. AND Shannon Fontaine of Shannon Fontaine Photography

Fondly referred to as “First Lady Acres,” this Oak Hill mansion was purchased in 1974 as a wedding gift for the First Lady of Country Music, Tammy Wynette, by her then-husband George Jones. The previous owner? Hank Williams. Today, this legendary property has been meticulously revived to continue its story in the 21st century. Meg Epstein of California South, a boutique development firm, and residential designer Cheryl Underwood collaborated on the project, carefully preserving the architectural integrity of the home while streamlining and updating the space. Situated on 8 acres and sprawling nearly 10,000 square feet, First Lady Acres has so many unique rooms and spaces that the possibilities for living and entertaining are virtually endless. Three adjoining living rooms — awash in natural light and updated with modern light fixtures, hardwood floors and a two-way fireplace — overlook the front of the property and offer ample space for hosting. Across the hall, the massive shotgun-style master suite is fit for a queen with his-and-hers closets, his-and-hers full bathrooms (the latter with a huge round

soaking tub) and two sizable rooms with fireplaces, perfect for the bedroom and a sitting room. Upstairs, three more bedrooms await, along with a yoga or Pilates studio and a steam room. The centerpiece of the home — now as it was in Tammy’s day — is the spacious gourmet kitchen with a wet bar, fireplace and built-in desk. The kitchen connects to a cavernous den with original pine walls and another wing of the house with additional bedrooms and bathrooms. It also overlooks the multilevel covered patio, one of Tammy’s favorite spots to host friends. The stone patio, which includes an outdoor kitchen and rectangular gas fire pit, stretches down to a pool (with additional fireplace), covered cabanas and men’s and women’s restrooms. Rounding out the backyard is a sport court with putting green, a helipad and a detached finished garage with glass door that would make a wonderful recording, yoga or art studio. All in all, the home has nine bedrooms, nine full bathrooms, two half-baths and a gated entry, all lovingly restored to a modern version of its former glory.

4400 Franklin Pike by Nancy Floyd phoTOgraphs by Nick McGinn of McGinn Photography and Bruce Cain of Elevated Lens Photography

The stunner at 4400 Franklin Pike is a masterpiece of juxtaposition — modern yet warm, spacious yet cozy, private yet centrally located. Upon entering the gated drive, visitors are immediately captivated by the home’s breathtaking Frank Lloyd Wright-style architecture and awed by the towering structure of Crab Orchard stone, mahogany and glass perched on the 3.23-acre property in Oak Hill. Inside, the four-bedroom home is the definition of sleek. Rich Sapele wood is used throughout the space — from the built-in entertainment center above the living room’s six-foot linear gas fireplace to the custom cabinets in the gourmet kitchen — streamlining the home’s aesthetic and enveloping the space in warmth. Functional and eco-friendly, the smart-house technology and a geothermal HVAC system prove that it’s not just the design that’s intelligent. The master suite is a sanctuary on the main level, boasting a private screened-in porch, generous his-and-hers closets, and a lavish bathroom with floating vanities, a freestanding soaking tub, heated porcelain tile floors, and walk-in showers with two Kohler heads, one hand-held and four spray handles. The master overlooks the secluded backyard where the current owners wisely added an in-ground saltwater pool and hot tub and a covered patio with stone fireplace and cooking area, creating outdoor entertaining spaces that are just as posh as their indoor counterparts. Beyond the four en suite bedrooms, the home makes the most of its 7,000 square feet with a mirror-lined gym, office and laundry room on the main level and a 2,500-bottle wine cellar and palatial game room and theater upstairs. Potential buyers who crave modern design without sacrificing comfort and serene surroundings without sacrificing city access needn’t look any further than this architectural treasure.

2325 Golf Club Lane by Holly Hoffman phoTOgraphs by Bruce Cain of Elevated Lens and Donna Yancey

“Big Kenny” Alphin, of country music duo Big & Rich, and wife Christiev Alphin, a designer and stylist, built this unique and elegant estate set on one of Nashville’s most treasured streets. They overlooked nothing when constructing this in-town oasis, from the cultivated gardens to accessible spaces and outstanding finishes. With 20,000 square feet and eight bedrooms, every possible amenity has been considered for the enjoyment of family and friends. The rooms are grand, yet well-proportioned, and offer plenty of space to live, work and entertain. Exceptional details and the finest craftsmanship are seen in the custom woodwork, millwork and iron fixtures as well as Brazilian cherry wood floors and custom drapery throughout. Upon entering, an authentic 19th-century Irish pub serves as a welcoming spot. Across the entry, a secret passageway leads to the private study and magnificent master suite with secluded patio. The luxurious master bath connects to a massive two-story wardrobe and dressing

room. From there, a tranquil patio with fireplace and pool access connects to the comfortable and roomy kitchen and sitting and breakfast rooms. Equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, the kitchen is truly a cook’s dream. Only steps away from the main house and studio, the sprawling backyard boasts a saltwater pool with underwater speakers, outdoor living and dining areas and lush landscaping. The serene pool area rivals a five-star resort — but without having to pack a bag. The extraordinary features don’t stop there. A playroom with theater and a fully-equipped private apartment, perfect for guests or staff, is located on the top floor. Stairs winding down from the entry lead to the 1,000-bottle wine cellar and dining room for 14 guests. But the most unique attribute of the home is the world-class studio designed by Big Kenny and Michael Cronin. For the tonedeaf buyer, the free-standing, two-story building could easily serve as an apartment, media room and entertaining space.

All of the homes in historic Whitland ooze charm, but the cottage at 203 Leonard Ave. looks as though it could’ve been plucked from the English countryside and dropped into the West End neighborhood. From the street, the home appears quaint and cozy, but at 7,018 square feet, it’s a spacious retreat with three levels, four bedrooms and a two-car garage. The perfect balance of traditional and modern, the home seamlessly blends classic features of the 1930 structure — like original hardwood floors and a stone fireplace in the foyer — with more contemporary updates. The kitchen, which was renovated in 2013 and includes both a butler’s pantry and walk-in pantry, was outfitted with leathered granite countertops, professional appliances, a coffered ceiling, and custom cabinets accented with antique mirrors and French wire. A palatial family room was added to the back of the home in 2014 with soaring ceilings of exposed beams and skylights that bathe the room in sunshine, and an adjacent deck overlooks the saltwater pool, hot tub and a small creek that snakes along the back edge of the property. The home boasts four bedrooms, each equipped with a walk-in closet and private bathroom. Three of the bedrooms are located upstairs, along with a small office nook, a rec room and a laundry room. The master suite is on the main level — off the living room and kitchen — and includes a huge walk-in closet with custom shelving and additional washer and dryer hookups as well as a luxurious bathroom with soaking tub, his-and-hers vanities and a steam shower with double showerheads. The walkout basement, which opens to the pool level, is a hub for entertaining with a full bathroom (with heated tile floors), a cozy wine room and a huge sitting area that makes an ideal media room or game room. Those longing for generous space and comfortable surroundings will be right at home in this charming hideaway. by Nancy Floyd phoTOgraphs by Matt Sanders/Showcase Photography

ine Cori nne Wa rd marries Daniel Garrett Anders on

Katie Ward and Garrett Anderson met as freshmen in 2008 at Auburn University but didn’t start dating until several years later. He proposed in February 2016 — shortly after they celebrated four years of being together — in Edwin Warner Park, where he had arranged a blanket with flowers and Champagne for the traditional bending of the knee. Afterward, they celebrated at the Nashville home of her parents, Corinne and Jimmy Ward, with his parents, Kim and Danny Anderson, who came up from Orlando, Florida, for the occasion. Katie and Garrett married in November at First Presbyterian Church (where her parents also married) with Todd Jones officiating. Wedding music

included Rhonda Swanson on the organ, Will Mikkelson on the guitar and Lisa Thrall on the violin. The bride wore a fitted gown of lace and tulle by Monique Lhuillier. Page and Windrow helped plan the event. Following the service, a trolley transported the wedding party to the reception at Belle Meade Country Club. “The weather that day,” said Katie, “was beautiful — 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky!” There was a seated dinner in the ballroom, which was decorated by Please Be Seated and The Tulip Tree and included arrangements of white and blush roses. The newlyweds cut their cakes created by Dessert Designs in the front hall, and the band

Scat Springs played trumpets to lead guests to the tented dance floor outside. After a snack of late-night sliders, the couple made their getaway in a vintage silver and black Rolls-Royce amid a shower of rose petals. Following a wedding trip to Sugar Beach in St. Lucia, they returned to their home in Atlanta, Georgia. Katie is a small business underwriter for Berkley Southeast Insurance Group. Garrett, who has his law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, is with Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete.

SLEEP Units can be booked as hotel rooms and suites or as two- or three-bedroom accommodations. Every bedroom has a spacious en suite bath with ceramic tile, roomy showers and double vanities, and many rooms have private balconies. Two- and three-bedroom condos allow friends and family to come together in an expansive open floor plan with a kitchen, dining area and living room, yet they still provide restful personal spaces with comfortable mattresses and fluffy pillows.

DINE Guests in hotel-style rooms and those wanting a break from the kitchen can take advantage of breakfast, lunch and cocktails at the latest outpost of Mississippi’s Big Bad Breakfast, which is conveniently located by the pool. A short stroll away, Cuvee 30A, local celeb chef Tim Creehan’s casual fine dining spot, is perfect for a romantic meal or drinks and appetizers. Grouper Vince — pecan-encrusted fish with a honey-Worcestershire sauce named for Vince Gill — ranks high among menu favorites.

PLAY Guests have access to complimentary bicycles for jaunts to nearby Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach. Thanks to miles of dedicated trails, a bike ride is an excellent way to cruise through state parks, forests and rare coastal dune lakes. Eco-tours with 30A Airboat Adventures are an exhilarating way to explore the unspoiled backwaters of the Choctawhatchee River. Captain Daniel steers his boat through mere inches of water for the best views of the magnificent landscape — and perhaps you’ll spot an alligator or two.

RELAX Complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas are available daily on nearby Inlet Beach, and for anyone who is “beached out,” The Pointe’s resort-style pool is a peaceful place to take in some sun while reading a book or to grab a catnap under a cabana. The rooftop lounge, with plentiful outdoor seating, sweeping views of the Gulf and a fire pit, promises fantastic sunset views. Once the sun goes down, the poolside fireplace is a cozy spot for a glass of wine before dinner or a nightcap before turning in.

The Pointe Inlet Beach, Florida

The Pointe is a new boutique hotel-style resort with modern aesthetics, exceptional amenities and a picturesque location. Situated at the entrance to Scenic Highway 30A’s east end, the property is within walking distance to Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach, directly across the street from shops and restaurants at 30Avenue, and a short walk or bike ride to the pristine sand of Inlet Beach. First-class amenities include a 61,000-gallon resort-style pool and hot tub, poolside cabanas and lounge area, fitness center and yoga deck, Tesla charging stations, rooftop lounge with Gulf views, a restaurant (and another on the way) and a seasonal shuttle to the beach. And The Pointe is pet friendly! The complex offers 68 fully furnished two- and three-bedroom condominiums available for purchase or to rent. Every convenience and comfort has been considered. Each unit comes with recycled glass counter tops, Whirlpool stainless steel kitchen appliances and GE washers and dryers. Whether you’re a couple looking for a permanent beach retreat, a family on summer vacation or someone in need of a quick getaway, look no further than The Pointe. by Holly Hoffman

The Unexpected What’s cooking at Lockeland Table and Etc. by Carrington Fox

Etc. 3790 Bedford Ave. 615-988-0332

Lockeland Table 1520 Woodland St. 615-228-4864

Nestled quietly on a residential block in trendy East Nashville, Lockeland Table is a quintessential neighborhood restaurant as well as a worthy destination. At once rustic and refined, Lockeland lets the ingredients speak for themselves from shelves lined with jewel-colored jars of Lockeland-branded products, including red pepper jam, chimichurri, smoked peach jam and spice blends. The menu’s earthy elegance might be best summed up by a signature pâté starter — made with Wedge Oak Farm chicken livers and Benton’s bacon fat — served in a small canning jar with smoked peach jam. Menus marry haute and homey with fluency in global dishes directed by local ingredients and traditions. Think strip steak with chimichurri and sautéed green beans with smoked vinegar and pecans. For a neighborly twist on happy hour, Lockeland hosts Community Hour from 4-6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, when a portion of proceeds benefits the neighborhood elementary school Lockeland Design Center.

Beloved chef and owner Deb Paquette is known for adding extra unexpected ingredients to create unique dishes, so it’s funny that Etc. (pronounced et cetera) gets its name from omitting something. Her confident pairing of complexity and playfulness is on display at Etc. in brunch, lunch and dinner menus dotted with Korean pulled pork sloppy Joes with daikon kimchi and fermented black bean mayo, Vietnamese short rib with spun lemongrass noodles and candied peanuts, and chicken breast with honey black bean butter and candied garlic broccoli. Take away the final letter from Deb’s sleek downtown establishment, Etch, and you get an intimate eatery tucked away on a quiet Green Hills side street. And the neighborhood is so delighted that guests can hardly sit down before stopping to chat between tables on their way to the bar.

photograph by daniel meigs

Since long before Nashville began to bloom, Deb has been elevating local tastes and expectations with her eclectic global flair, from North African and Mediterranean flavors at Zola to whimsical tortilla inventions at Local Taco and French sophistication at Miel. If you’re looking for Deb’s famous beets, you’ll find her signature purple and pink dashed across grilled ají octopus with beet romesco and salad with beets, sorghum sambal goat cheese, cherry ginger purée, etc.

photograph by daniel meigs

With a résumé that winds through Gramercy Tavern in New York City and Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse in New Orleans and includes a James Beard nod, chef Hal Holden-Bache worked at Capitol Grille and Eastland Cafe before launching Lockeland Table in a 1930s H.G. Hill grocery store. While in New York filming an upcoming Food Network show, chef Hal conducted extensive research on dough for his woodfired pizzas with toppings such as Porter Road Butcher sage sausage, ricotta, winter squash and housemade mozzarella. For a sumptuous preview, check out Lockeland’s coffee table book, written by Hal and general manager Cara Graham and photographed by Ron Manville.

Wine Speak Keeping up with the wine geeks

Recently, a group of collectors had dinner at one of the world’s largest wine cellars, Bern’s Steak House in Tampa. One novice wine bibber was there and wrote down the terms she had questions about. I thought a brief list of terms might help everyone who ends up with a wine geek at a tasting or dinner. Attack — The first impression the wine makes as it enters your mouth. Usually the fruit is represented in the attack since the taste buds that perceive sweetness are on the front of our tongues.

enjoy your mother’s day

Balanced — Wine that has no characteristic stronger than the others. It is a balance of fruit, acid and tannin.

347 Main Street • Franklin, TN 37064 in historic downtown Franklin at the corner of 4th and Main 615.595.2323 • theregistryfranklin.com

Complex — A wine with a number of flavors and qualities (all good). It’s the opposite of “one dimensional.” Finish — The last impression the wine makes as it leaves your mouth after being swallowed. Usually, the longer the finish, the better the wine. A long finish is different than an aftertaste, which is the flavor that remains in the back of the throat and nasal passages after the wine has been drunk. Usually, this is the sign of a wine in poor condition. Nose — The aroma of the wine; the way it smells. Palate — The way the wine feels or the weight of the wine in your mouth. Light-bodied — For red wines, this means not much tannin. A lot of wines under $15 a bottle are lightbodied, such as Beaujolais nouveau.

BELLE MEADE

SUNDAY BRUNCH (Cool Springs Only) 10:30am-3pm

COOL SPRINGS 650 Frazier Dr. (615) 778-9950

Full-bodied red wines are the opposite. Most high-priced California cabernet sauvignons are full-bodied. Light-bodied white wines have a lack of acidity. Again, inexpensive white wines are usually light-bodied. Good acidity — On the nose, good acidity is usually reflected by strong fruit scents, especially citrus, crisp apple and ripe pineapple. On the palate, it’s mouthwatering, like biting a lemon. Acidity is reflected on the sides of your tongue. A lack of acidity gives wine a flabby characteristic and a watery finish. Bitter — Obviously a taste detected in the mouth. Its causes are legion, and it makes a wine undrinkable. Corked — An often overused descriptor. It is caused by the bacteria TCA. It has a very distinct wet cardboard smell and will only get worse as the mold multiplies during contact with air. If there’s any doubt whether or not a wine is corked, let it sit. If the smell gets worse, it’s corked. Maderized — A heavy, flat smell marked by the lack of fresh fruit and metal elements. It’s caused by age or exposure to oxygen and is usually associated with the term “oxidized,” which is an overexposure to oxygen. In red wine, it’s a burned metal smell. In white wine, the color has usually become a deeper yellow, and the nose is metallic. While there are plenty of other terms you can learn and may hear, these will let you enjoy wine speak with a wine geek. Above all, remember: the only opinion that really matters when it comes to wine is yours.

Slipping Into Summer The power of remembering

Here we are; it’s May. People are bumping into each other at Publix and saying, “Can you believe that it’s May already? How did that happen?” It happened because April slides by so innocuously, the flowers opening shyly, the weekends empty enough for last-minute invitations for friends to come over for dinner. In April, the end of the school year is coming, but it isn’t actually here, so we don’t have to do anything about it. There are no field days to contend with. No end-of-the-year parties. No graduations and baccalaureates and awards ceremonies. Nor is there (quite) the onslaught of social events. (Steeplechase, for one, can wipe you out for weeks.) April is just sweet. And then May comes, and we feel ... what is it that we feel — anxious? We are facing the finish line and yet we have miles to go before we arrive exhausted and sweaty into summer. Mayhem. Mayday. That’s how we feel. Good. Now we’ve said it; we’ve aired our anxieties about the month and feel much better knowing that we aren’t alone in feeling stressed about everything that the next three weeks will demand of us. And, we remind ourselves that the best three days of the year are our reward at the end of it all. Three days, three words: Memorial Day weekend. It used to be that I could never remember which one was which. Was it Memorial Day or Labor Day that comes first? They were interchangeable, the bookends of summer. My trick now is to recall that

PEPPER BOXING is a guided workout that utilizes our unique teardrop-style

it goes in reverse alphabetical order, but it would probably make more sense to think about Labor Day as the official kick-in-the-pants for everyone to go back to work. Memorial, on the other hand, is the kick-start to summer. All of those endless to-dos are behind us, and we are free to take a deep breath and do exactly what we want. Lots of people head to the beach, lots of others to the lake. As for us, we go to the country, and in three days cram in a summer’s worth of activities: swimming, tennis, camping, canoeing, swinging, reading, exploring, napping, fishing and swimming some more. And then there’s the food … all those glorious foods that are synonymous with summer: watermelon, Doritos, peach cobbler, fried chicken, tomatoes, s’mores and iced tea. It is all, so wonderfully, just the beginning. It is also, first and foremost, so wonderfully about remembering. Memorial Day — which is on May 29 this year — is a call to remember those people who fought and died to preserve this freedom that we so easily take for granted. One Memorial Day a few years back, my husband and I visited the World War II memorial at the Bicentennial Mall: an 18,000-ton black globe suspended in a thin strip of water. At once so heavy and so tenuous, it serves as a reminder of the true state of the world and of our individual lives on it. Seeing it, or any memorial, is overwhelming. It so quickly puts all that “mayhem” into perspective.

Preserving the Past Peeking behind the glass at The Hermitage “It gives me chills just talking about it,” says Howard Kittell, president and CEO of The Hermitage, as he points out a 236-year-old candle in Andrew Jackson’s front parlor. It’s his favorite artifact on display in the presidential home, and it’s not hard to see why. The candle dates back to the Battle of Yorktown, the final victory of the American Revolutionary War. After invading General Cornwallis’ headquarters, George Washington stumbled upon the box of candles and gave one to each of his men, encouraging them to burn it on the anniversary of the battle to be reminded of their great accomplishments. The son of one of the soldiers gave his father’s candle to Andrew Jackson, who in turn burned it on the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, and to this day, it remains at The Hermitage. It’s one of thousands of artifacts on display that date back to the seventh president’s time in the home. “My interest in presidential history began, appropriately, with George Washington,” Howard says. “To have an object in our collection that was handled by Washington, in commemoration of the last battle of the Revolutionary War, and then given to Andrew Jackson in honor of him winning the Battle of New Orleans, one of the most significant battles in our history, links these two major presidents in a profound way that is supremely cool. Everything about it appeals to my history nerd self.” History nerds can’t help but be in awe when visiting The Hermitage, noting the painstaking preservation and attention to detail that defines the presidential home. Originally constructed between 1819 and 1821, The Hermitage underwent two major renovations in Andrew Jackson’s lifetime: one in 1831 that brought significant additions to the mansion and one in 1834 after a devastating fire ravaged the property. Under architects Joseph Reiff and William C. Hume, The Hermitage was redesigned in the more fashionable Greek Revivalist style in 1837, transforming the home’s facade with two-story columns with modified Corinthian capitals across the front porch and resulting in the mansion’s stately appearance that lives on today. After Andrew Jackson’s death in 1845, the home was passed on to his adopted son, Andrew Jackson Jr., and was eventually owned by Andrew Jackson III, but thanks to a hardworking and devoted group of women known as the Ladies’ Hermitage Association, the house was preserved as a museum in 1889. In the past 128 years, The Hermitage has welcomed more than 16 million visitors to learn more about the life and times of one of our nation’s most significant and controversial presidents.

For yet another restoration in the 1990s, the curatorial team relied on personal correspondence and receipts from the Andrew Jackson Papers and documentation from the house fire in 1834 to recreate the home’s interior to look exactly as it did before Jackson’s death. From the French wallpaper to the family portraits to the elaborate chandeliers, the home is a time capsule of the seventh president’s retirement years, giving guests a realistic glimpse into his life. And perhaps even more astonishing are the furnishings. More than 90 percent of the artifacts and furniture in the home are original pieces that belonged to Andrew Jackson. There is a piano in the back parlor that the president bought for his 4-yearold granddaughter for $450, making it the most expensive piece in the home. In Jackson’s study sits the oldest piece of furniture in the house — a custom desk — surrounded by book-lined shelves. In all, The Hermitage owns 750 of the 900 volumes that Jackson owned at the time of his death. Like the Battle of Yorktown candle, the museum also features items of a more meaningful historical or personal significance. A bust of the president sculpted during the last year of his life by Italian sculptor Luigi Persico is perched near the fireplace in the parlor. A piece of Plymouth Rock (yes, the Plymouth Rock) sits on a table across the room. On the opposite side of the house, the bed where Andrew Jackson died still stands in his bedroom with his slippers neatly arranged near the fireplace. Above the dresser hangs a striking portrait of Jackson, painted during his last days by George Healy. Commissioned by the King of France, the portrait moved Jackson’s family so much that they asked Healy to paint them a copy, which he did in a matter of days. That copy hangs at The Hermitage, while the original is the only painting of a U.S. president to grace the walls of the Louvre. Throughout the 128 acres of The Hermitage, which also includes 26 other structures and the gardens where Andrew and Rachel Jackson are buried, there are countless treasures to be discovered. “Jackson made The Hermitage and Nashville a destination in his time, and his home is increasingly a local, national and international destination in Nashville today,” Howard says. But like any historical site and tourist destination, especially one that is managed and operated as a nonprofit, The Hermitage requires the support of volunteers and donors to execute its mission to “preserve, educate and inspire.” From serving as a lawn greeter to becoming a member of the Andrew Jackson Foundation, there are many options to aid in the preservation of this local and national gem. Family Matters Expert etiquette advice from John Bridges

Bothered By Father I am a mother of two young children, and every year, I celebrate my own Mother’s Day with my in-laws. Last year, it was me, my mother-in-law and my grandmothers-in-law — one of whom was recently widowed. As ever, my father-in-law dominated the lunch and post-lunch conversation with his thoughts on politics. No one is able to have any other conversation because he is so loud, so everyone remains quiet. I think (every year) how disrespectful this is to all of the people who are meant to be celebrated. Instead of speaking up, last year, I got up and left. I’m getting ready for this year. What should I do? —Becky, Antioch So it happened again last year, “as ever.” What if somebody spoke up, maybe risking the tender toes of his politics, actually engaging him in a real duel and risking his comeback just for the fun of it? On the other hand, this is Mother’s Day, and it might not be too much fun baiting the bear at the table. But neither is getting up and stalking out. It’s supposed to be your day, as well as the other various mothers, so why shouldn’t your husband have a cup of coffee with his dad — maybe a couple of weeks ahead this year. You won’t be sitting in, so let him tell the old guy what he needs to hear. You’re the one who’s bruised, as usual, and your dad-in-law is the one who’s acting out — and ruining a perfectly lovely day. Maybe he’ll try to play nice-nice. Or maybe he’ll get surly. (Surly meaning quiet.) If you’re lucky, he’ll take a stroll on the porch. Count your Mother’s Day daisies.

Smothered With motherS My parents divorced many years ago, and I have grown very close to my stepmother. We’re so close that it’s kind of a problem with my mother. My wedding is coming up. How can I include my stepmother in the wedding party without offending my mom? —Anonymous, West Nashville Your mother’s wearing a chip on her shoulder rather than a corsage. May I ask who’s picking up the tab for the wedding? Your father seems like the likely moneybags, and when he goes out, his wife goes with him. What does your mother expect — that she’ll stay at home with a pizza? Your mother belongs on the front row, escorted in by the cutest of the groomsmen. (Let her pick.) If she’s got a date, she can bring him along. That way, she’ll have someone to dance with at the party. Your stepmother can sit on the second row, or even farther back if grandmothers are involved. But your father will sit beside her, wherever she is, and he’ll unashamedly dance with her. That’s what the crowd will expect. The receiving line at the reception could get treacherous. But your stepmother can work the room while your mother works the line. That should make her happy — no matter who wrote the checks. Your job is to love them both, of course, almost as much as you love your new husband. If you’re lucky, he’ll stick around.

Mission Statement Providence Interiors’ tag line is Unique Finds and Design, which appropriately describes the store’s mix of antiques, contemporary pieces, updated lighting and accessories. “We try to find one special thing here and one special thing there instead of ordering 25 of one thing,” says Julie. She and Amber go to market to search for special items as well as enlist local artisans to design custom pieces for the store, such as a fireplace screen by Alabama artist Lucy Smith.

Choosing an interior designer can be challenging. It can mean flipping through portfolios, perusing websites and following Facebook pages. Or in the case of designers Julie Brown and Amber Thomas, it can mean opening the front door. Providence Interiors, a 3,000-square-foot retail store in Green Hills, offers potential clients and shoppers a glimpse into the duo’s design aesthetic. An eclectic but harmonious mix of white sofas and antiques are accented by accessories such as candles in glass hurricanes, gold-rimmed mirrors, white coral, a porcelain angel, a patinated urn filled with moss and an extensive collection of coffee table books. “We hope that people will walk in and love it so much [that] if they need some design help, they’ll ask us to work with them,” says Amber. “That’s the end goal, but we love the retail side too because we get to surround ourselves with all the beautiful things we love.” The partners like clean, simple lines and lots of neutrals with pops of color. They believe that what you take out of a room is just as important as what you add in. “Sometimes,” Julie says, “just starting with a cleaner slate allows for a lot of creativity.” by Whitney Clay

Trend Report

Open Doors

Color Coded

Those reporting that minimalism is on the way out may be misinformed. With the growing popularity of organizers such as best-selling author Marie Kondo, who makes an art form out of decluttering and simplifying, the less is more philosophy seems to be gaining ground. While trend forecasters are predicting more color and patterns in home interiors, Amber believes a little goes a long way. “If everything is colorful, if everything is patterned, you don’t appreciate it or enjoy it as much.”

Partners since 2010 — when both were working out of their homes — the designers initially rented space in retail stores in Franklin and Brentwood. “We were going from shop to shop and garage to garage. Nothing was in one place,” says Amber. After consulting with well-known Dallas-based designer Lisa Luby Ryan, they closed everything and decided to open their own store, seeking “something with our own name, our own style, our own look, so people could walk in and see who we are.”

Green is predicted to be the “it” color for 2017. “We typically add green with plants,” says Julie. She couldn’t be more on trend. The Pantone company, the authority on color, has chosen Greenery as the 2017 color of the year, symbolizing nature and the environment. (Not to be confused with 2013’s color of the year, Emerald, symbolizing growth and prosperity.) Each year, the company’s Color Institute honors one hue for the year, reflecting emerging trends.

IT’S HARD. WE GET IT.

Caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s or Dementia can be challengeing, to say the least. Life changes day to day, even hour to hour.

My younger sister and I fell into the rental house business by default. Our parents had built a small house that they rented for about $850 a month. Dad developed dementia in his later years, and my mother performed landlord duties: finding tenants and collecting the rent. When she died, that job fell on Jane and me. Tenants Carol and Darryl realized they were now dealing with amateurs as well as out-oftowners and began having fun by falling behind on rent or sending only partial payments. Relations became contentious, and before a year had gone by, they had stiffed us for 30 days and were unresponsive to phone calls. We hired a lawyer to begin eviction proceedings. (“You’re finally getting smart,” Carol gloated.) That worked to get rid of them at last — but not before they vandalized the little house. In addition to gleeful wear and tear on every surface, motor oil saturated the living room carpet. Sure, we sued them, but we’re at the end of a long line of people waiting to get paid, so it’s unlikely we’ll recoup any costs. Today’s hot real estate market is tempting many to consider buying rental properties. In spite of our first rental experience, Jane and I continued to experiment with modest residential real estate investments. We have slightly different styles, but Jane is my mentor. She is scrappy and can stretch a dollar until it screams for mercy. Dollar for dollar, her method is more profitable than mine. (This is only a sideline for her; she does bank consulting and freelance financial services in her real life.) However, as a landlord, Jane makes her own repairs. She spent

a summer painting houses in Nantucket with some college friends, and she listened more closely than I did when my dad discussed electrical or plumbing issues. Yes, she can hang a light fixture, install a rheostat or fix a leaky sink. She can lay tile, refinish floors, remove ceiling tiles and repair a roof. For fun, she does yard work. Because of her propensity for trimming trees and shrubs, she’s sometimes called Chainsaw Jane, an odd moniker for a girl I think of as tiny but resilient. Despite falling off a ladder last year when removing a limb that threatened her house, she hasn’t slowed down a bit. She focuses on finding the right tenant and insists on two forms of ID, a W-2, tax return and social security number. She performs credit checks on all serious candidates, a rule she never breaks. Being selective has paid off in steady income and has protected our property long term. I’ve found that referrals from friends usually mean good people and dependable renters. If you own a house, you know it is a living thing that requires regular maintenance. Roofs and HVACs need replacing. Plumbers and handymen must be paid. If you choose to undertake a rental property and it’s too late to learn from your dad, take classes in rudimentary house repairs or make friends with construction experts you trust to do good work and charge fair prices. There’s always something new to handle, but it’s not rocket science. And please contact me if you get an application from a couple named Carol and Darryl. They owe Jane and me some money.

At Barton House, we’re here—with full time residency, respite, an active support group and many shoulders to lean on.

First Lady Acres 1978-1979

What’s an appropriate wedding gift for country music royalty? A new house, of course. When George Jones and Tammy Wynette tied the knot, the country crooner surprised his new bride with a secluded mansion on Franklin Pike. The house was affectionately dubbed First Lady Acres, a playful nod to Tammy’s reputation as the First Lady of Country Music. Tammy’s relationship with the palatial pad — which previously belonged to Hank Williams — long outlasted her marriage to George. Despite their divorce in 1975, Tammy remained in the home until her death in 1998. Today, the house has been lovingly restored, is back on the market and has been named one of our Homes of Distinction. Read more about it on page 74.
