They don’t have to be fancy, but because I write all of my notes and many early drafts longhand, I need a pen that’s comfortable and writes well. Choke Point

Inside the collapse of

By

a local payday giant.

D av iD HuDn a l l

T

wo weeks ago, Reuters reported that AMG Services, the Overland Park–based online payday-loan behemoth, had been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury. The company, according to that report, is being investigated for violations that include wire fraud, racketeering and money laundering. That’s no great shock. AMG Services has become a textbook exemplar of the notoriously deceptive online-lending industry. This isn’t even the first instance of AMG running afoul of federal authorities; the Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against AMG in 2012, accusing it of not disclosing the true costs of its loans and threatening borrowers during the collection process. What’s newsworthy about this latest development is that it’s a probe of a criminal nature. It means that some of the people who operate these online payday businesses might eventually go to jail. As The Pitch has reported, there are several individuals in Kansas City who operate or have operated such businesses — the KC metro is a national hub for the industry. So it’s not just bad news for Scott Tucker, the race-car-driving puppetmaster of AMG but also bad news for other people in town who have cribbed his business model. One local operation that’s ripe for federal scrutiny is LTS Management Services, which for the last decade has been extending and collecting short-term online payday loans in downtown Kansas City, at 908 Baltimore. (Other names associated with the company include Loan Shop Online; Evergreen Capital Partners; DMS Marketing; and, most recently, Glacier Management. For the purposes of this article, we’ll call it LTS.) Around mid-2013, the federal government implemented a coordinated effort known in the industry as Operation Choke Point. The Department of Justice sent subpoenas to banks and payment-processing firms that facilitate shady online loans, and the FDIC began auditing banks suspected of processing ACH payments from sketchy lenders. The move scared banks from doing business with companies like LTS and AMG. Banks and processors are essential to such companies’ methods of doing business — if they can’t electronically drop money into and (more importantly) out of borrowers’ accounts, they’re toast. Missouri Bank (currently a defendant, along with several other banks, in an Operation Choke Point–related class-action RICO suit brought by local law firm Stueve Siegel Hanson) was for many years LTS Management’s bank of preference. But it rather sensibly forfeited that revenue stream following the feds’ crackdown. Which meant that LTS

(and other entities in its line of business) needed to find processors unafraid of the government’s threats. For a time, according to several former LTS employees, that was a Canadian company called Kapcharge. But in October, Kapcharge, too, exited the business. Things got weirder at LTS after that. “I know for a while the owners had some bank off the coast of Africa, near Madagascar, processing the transactions,” says Zechariah Moses, a former employee in the collections department at LTS. “I remember a bunch of us were looking at Google Maps, trying to find it on the map. We were just like, ‘What is happening to this company?’ ” October is also when LTS started quietly but steadily shedding its staff. First to go were the loan reps — with no banks to process the loans, loan reps no longer had a product to sell. One loan rep, Savannaha Tyler, who was laid off in October, tells The Pitch that it was protocol in the lending department to lie to borrowers about where LTS was located, depending on which of the companies’ various shell names the lenders were representing. “So if they were borrowing from Loan Shop Online, we would tell them we were based in Delaware. Or if they were borrowing from Custom Payday [another LTS subsidiary], we were supposed to say we were based in the United Kingdom,” says Tyler, who worked for LTS in a variety of capacities for seven years. “There was a whole system to it we had to know. We were told that’s the way it was supposed to be done because Delaware or the U.K. is where those companies had

originally received their lending license. But we’re still being instructed, while we’re sitting in downtown Kansas City, to say we’re somewhere else. It just seemed shady.” In a prepared statement to The Pitch, LTS owners Del Kimball and Sam Furseth said, “Our collectors acted on behalf of companies that were domiciled in Delaware as well as companies located outside the of the country. Employees were instructed to advise that they were acting on behalf of the entity that originated the account when contacting a customer about a delinquent account.” In February, much of the collections department was let go, after months of attempting to collect from borrowers via checks and debit cards. Michelle Pinkerton, a former employee in the collections department, echoes Tyler’s claims about misleading borrowers as to LTS’ location. “It was the same in collections,” says Pinkerton, who worked for LTS from June until October 2013. “We would have accounts in certain states where we’d have to call them from a specific phone number.” The motive behind such misdirection is simple: The usury laws of many states prevent entities like LTS, whose loans often bear annual interest rates as high as 700 percent, from lending within their borders. That absurd figure is not the only objectionable thing about LTS’ loans, though. Moses, who has also worked at other online payday operations in town — including E-Finance (run by Josh Mitchem) and Geneva-Roth Ventures (run by Mark Curry) — explains exactly what is

908 Baltimore: one address, many area codes so misleading and predatory about the structure of these loan agreements. “You take out a loan, and they charge you $30 for every hundred you borrow,” Moses says. “So you take out $300 and you agree to pay back $390. First of all, that’s a lot of interest. But the real trickery is, if you haven’t paid it back in two weeks, then on the 15th day, they ding your account for $90. A normal person would see that on their checking account and assume the $90 was going to the $300 principal. That’s just logical thinking, to assume that these debits are going toward the principal. But they’re rolling that money over. So after five of those payments, when you assume the loan has been paid off, you look at your account and see that you still owe the original principal, plus you’ve been hit five times for $90. They got you for $450 already, and you haven’t paid a dime off the principal. “I’ve seen that go on for 20, 30, 40 weeks before the borrower realizes what happens,” he says. “He took out a loan for $300 and owes $4,000, $5,000. And, of course, nobody from [LTS] is attempting to contact him to let him know what’s going on. It’s crazy.” On May 9, there were yet more layoffs at 908 Baltimore. “LTS Management has ceased business operations,” Kimball and Furseth said in a statement. “And Glacier Management is in the process of winding down its business operations.”

Can Russell Bucklew stay out of Missouri’s death chamber?

L

ethal injection has become such an uncertain method of execution that Russell Bucklew would rather burn to death. “I’m worried that it’s not going to work correctly and I’m going to end up choking to death,” Bucklew told The Pitch over the phone from prison. “I’m afraid that I’m going to be brain-dead or a vegetable by the time they’re done. That’s what I’m afraid of more than anything else. I’d rather them just pour gasoline on me and set me on fire, to be perfectly honest with you.” Bucklew was scheduled to die a minute after midnight on May 21, but a federal court intervened. Bucklew’s attorneys believe that a lethal injection would complicate his condition and prolong his death. They sued the Missouri Department of Corrections, a legal maneuver that convinced the courts to stall his execution. Because Missouri’s primary method of capital punishment has become so uncertain, Buklew’s attorneys wanted to videotape him being put to death. A video record, they said, would have supported a future legal claim had the execution not worked or resulted in a protracted, grisly death. The concerns aren’t unfounded. Oklahoma corrections officials bungled Clayton Lockett’s April 29 execution, leading to what was, by all accounts, a macabre ending to the 38-year-old’s life. That state also uses lethal injection. And, as in Missouri, the contents of the fatal dose are kept secret. Lockett was not a sympathetic character. He shot his 19-year-old victim and watched as another man buried her alive. Those who defend the death penalty argue that, even with the problems posed by state-conducted executions — particularly the problems intrinsic to lethal injection — the results remain kinder to the convicted than whatever a capital crime’s victims suffered. But that view ignores the constitutional mandate that punishments not be cruel or unusual — and Lockett’s death was very likely both. Oklahoma, a state where the governor and some legislators eroded the separation of power between elected lawmakers and the courts in order to proceed with Lockett’s execution, has been forced to hit the brakes on its execution machine. Missouri has indicated no post-Lockett hesitation. A federal appeals court, however, showed more restraint. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals halted Bucklew’s execution on Tuesday, six hours before it was supposed to happen. Bucklew’s attorneys beat long odds in the

Bucklew awaits his fate. courts to get at least a temporary reprieve for their client, convincing federal judges that Missouri officials hadn’t considered the possibility that Bucklew’s rare medical condition could lead to a prolonged and unconstitutional death. The appeals court found that Bucklew’s health concerns — he suffers from a birth defect that causes weakened blood vessels in his head and neck and could constrain his airways — were persuasive and that Missouri officials hadn’t contested them. The court was also unhappy that Missouri resisted attempts to get funding for a full medical examination of Bucklew’s condition. Bucklew’s crime was grim. In 1996, he shot Michael Sanders, a man he suspected of carrying on an affair with his ex-girlfriend. While Sanders bled out, Bucklew kidnapped his exgirlfriend and raped her. Bucklew characterizes his shooting of Sanders as a means of self-defense, a claim that doesn’t square with the facts. Sanders was armed, but Bucklew was breaking into Sanders’ mobile home. Regardless, Bucklew says he is remorseful for causing Sanders’ death. “I’m sorry for what happened,” Bucklew said on May 13. “Sorry doesn’t cut it. Should I be put to death for it? No. I’m not an ax murderer. There’s guys in the prison system here who did worse things than I did.” The Department of Corrections faces lawsuits from several press organizations and the American Civil Liberties Union, arguing against the state’s extreme secrecy regarding the source of its lethal-injection drugs, as well as violations of the state’s openrecords laws.

S

ummer has been slow coming to Kansas City, but make no mistake: The five-fi nger death punch of heat, humidity, boredom, sweat and sweat-barassment is upon us. Sure, you could get hammered on cold mojitos at noon, but going for a swim is an easier, cheaper and safer way to revel in the sluggishness of the season. So here’s our list of 10 public pools where you can barrel down a slide, go with the flow, or just eat a 3-foot Super Rope while working on your tan. Oh, and remember your sunscreen, people.

worth the wait. Once you’ve snagged a tube, seriously hang onto it.

LEAWOOD AQUATIC CENTER

This water park aims to please thrill seekers and slothful sunbathers alike with a 900foot lazy river, a 308-foot raft slide, and a full-service dining area.

This pool has five separate areas to appeal to all ages, including a zero-depth pool, a slide and an adults-only swim every hour. A season pass at Leawood Aquatic Center also gets you into five other Johnson County–area pools.

THE BAY WATER PARK 7101 Longview Rd. thebaykc.com

In addition to multiple pools and a lazy river, the Bay is also home to the area’s only public surf simulator, opening this spring. It’s just like riding waves at the beach, you guys! (Not really. But it still sounds fun.)

BLACK BOB BAY

14570 W. 151st St., Olathe olatheks.org/parksrec/programs/aquatics/ blackbob The lines for the raft slide at Black Bob Bay can be long, but the splash at the end is well

INDIAN TRAILS AQUATIC CENTER

8801 Greenway Ln., Lenexa lenexa.com/parks/pools_indiantrails.html When you’re ready to work off that half-pint of cookies and cream you just devoured from the concession stand, Indian Trails has eight lanes for swimming laps. And a rock-climbing wall. And plenty of space for lounging. 10601 Lee Blvd., Leawood leawood.org/parks/aquaticcenter.aspx

ROELAND PARK AQUATIC CENTER 4843 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park roelandpark.net/explore-roeland-park/ aquatic-center

When the dome comes off this year-round pool in May, the fun really starts. The center has a 120-foot slide, a spray park and a separate pool for kids. Also: an area for competitive lap swimming. Loser buys nachos!

SUMMIT WAVES

120 S.W. Blue Pkwy., Lee’s Summit cityofls.net/parks/facilities/ summit-waves.aspx

The first aquatic park in Lee’s Summit, Summit Waves features a 904-foot “action river” and a six-lane lap pool. The concession stand has healthy snack options that will make you feel good about the thought of taking off your shirt again sometime this summer.

As far as pools go, those here are pretty basic: two giant concrete holes filled with chlorinated water in which many humans can swim simultaneously, and one has a diving board. The awesome part: A season pass costs $25, and on Sundays, you can swim for $1.

hink of your favorite reading experiences and you’ll probably picture turning pages in the summertime. Last year I dug into the Sherlock Holmes canon, which fueled my love for the BBC television series. In 2012, I tore through Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl in one sitting, then spent the rest of the summer raving about it. And my all-time favorite hot-weather read may just be the wintry Anna Karenina, which I lugged all the way to a beach in Mexico. I spent a month with Tolstoy, and my copy of Anna is lovingly stained with sunscreen and sand. The best thing about summer reading is that there are no rules. School is out. No homework is due. You can read anything you like.

wave and a smallpox outbreak, and someone has killed Jenny Bonnet in a boardinghouse. Donoghue researched the case and has written a possible explanation of the crime. This one feels like a hit for fans of historical fiction and true crime.

Frog Music

By Emma Donoghue Raise your hand if you’re still creeped out by Room, Donoghue’s engrossing 2010 novel, in which a 5-year-old boy and his mother are held captive in a small shed. Her new book happens to be set in summer, and it’s based on a true story involving an unsolved murder. In the San Francisco of 1876, citizens are enduring a heat

To Rise Again at a Decent Hour

By Joshua Ferris You can file this under Most Anticipated Novel. Ferris’ first book, the award-winning Then We Came to the End, is fueled by hilarious, slyly profound observations about what it’s like to work in a modern office. This latest story follows a man whose identity has been stolen on

By Chang-rae Lee Thanks to the immense popularity of The Hunger Games series, dystopian novels are still a big part of the young-adult genre, but Lee’s book reminds us that they aren’t just for teenagers. Lee sets his story in a future America that has labor camps filled with Chinese workers and a 1984-like totalitarian government. The book follows the journey of a young woman who abandons her colony and goes in search of the man she loves, an action that could start a revolt. Lee is known for his beautiful prose, and fans of literary fiction should love this.

Land of Love and Drowning

By Tiphanie Yanique An epic family saga set in the Virgin Islands? Yes, please. Yanique’s debut novel follows three generations of the Bradshaw clan. It has a shipwreck in the Caribbean Sea, a dramatic rescue, love, loss, war, betrayal, and even some magic. It also tells the history of the islands as they transferred from Danish to American rule. I won’t be jetting off to the Caribbean this summer, but reading this may be the next best thing.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry

By Gabrielle Zevin A.J. Fikry is the cranky owner of a small New England bookstore, and he’s having a rough time. His wife has died, his shop is almost bankrupt, and his rare collection of Poe poems has been stolen. His fortunes change when a precocious child turns up at his store, and he gets another chance at love with a fellow bibliophile. Zevin’s story is part mystery, part knowing tweak of lit culture and part romance. And if there’s a happy ending, you won’t hear me complain.

Nonfiction Little Failure: A Memoir

By Gary Shteyngart Humor! Pathos! Culture! Satire! Shteyngart’s memoir has it all. He was born in Russia and immigrated to the United States in 1979, when he was 7. After being beaten by other kids, he changed his name from Igor to Gary and spent years trying to lose his thick Russian accent. His mother wanted him to become a lawyer or a Wall Street type, but he couldn’t do it, so she nicknamed him “little failure.” Shteyngart is actually a big success on the literary-fiction scene: His novels include the acclaimed Super Sad True Love Story. I hope this wonderful memoir brings more attention to his work.

tinue to get richer. Anyone who has chanted “We are the 99 percent” won’t be surprised by that news, but Piketty’s fluid collation of data and history has become the stuff of op-ed battles. It’s a book that’s going to get referenced a lot. If you want to rage like Karl Marx this summer, break out the Piketty.

TRU HERO. TRU HISTORY. TRU DESTINATION.

The Knowledge: How to Rebuild Our World From Scratch

My Life in Middlemarch

By Rebecca Mead Mead’s loving tribute to George Eliot’s Middlemarch is the latest in the growing genre of bibliomemoirs. Mead writes about her attachment to the English masterpiece and how it has shaped her, including along the way biographical details about Eliot’s unconventional life. I am not sure which to read first, the memoir or Middlemarch itself. Either way, I’m eager to dive into the classic that Virginia Woolf described as “one of the few English novels written for grown-up people.”

Capital in the Twenty-First Century

By Thomas Piketty Who wants to read a 700-page tome about wealth inequality? I do! I do! Also, everybody else: It is the No. 1 best-seller on Amazon and, at this writing, tops The New York Times nonfiction list. French economist Piketty created a huge historical database of income and wealth distribution from 20 countries, crunched the numbers and found that, indeed, the rich con-

TRUMAN

By Lewis Dartnell If you’re worried about the collapse of civilization, this is the book for you. If society crumbled from an asteroid collision, a flu pandemic or a zombie onslaught, the result basically would be the same: We might have to rebuild our technologies from scratch. Astrobiologist Dartnell here synthesizes humankind’s knowledge into 300 pages of instructions on agriculture, food preservation, medicine, transportation, communications and chemistry. Better skip the e-book and buy a print copy — maybe two.

Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America

By John Waters I love travelogues, but I doubt that I’ve read one quite like this. Cult film director Waters hitchhiked from Baltimore to San Francisco, carrying a sign that read “End of 70 West.” Mustachioed high jinks ensue. But instead of writing a typical travel journal, Waters here imagines a best-case scenario, then follows with a worst-case version and, finally, the real thing. If you like musical accompaniment, he also includes a playlist. I can’t wait to hear what happened to him in Kansas.

kids investigating mysterious happenings at a nearby construction site.

Tammy

Laid off and cheated on, a desperate woman (Melissa McCarthy) robs a fast-food joint, then goes on the lam with her hard-drinking grandma (Susan Sarandon — why not?). McCarthy co-writes with husband Ben Falcone, who also directs.

July 11 A Long Way Down (Limited)

F ilm T

here was a time when tentpoles like SpiderMan, X-Men and Godzilla would dominate the hot summer months. But those blockbusters already premiered in May, taking in as much box office as possible, then getting the hell out of the way lest they be steamrolled by the juggernaut that is the Summer of Kelsey Grammer. The erstwhile Dr. Frasier Crane appears in both Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Expendables 3. Kansas City filmgoers, kneel before your new celluloid god.

May 30 Maleficent

Disney reboots Sleeping Beauty in live action, from the villain’s POV, with some origin story stirred into the cauldron and a shrewdly cast Angelina Jolie in the title role.

A Million Ways to Die in the West

Seth MacFarlane writes, directs, woos Charlize Theron, battles Liam Neeson and makes anachronistic jokes in a raunchy Western that he hopes will be this generation’s Blazing Saddles.

June 6

The Fault in Our Stars

The first unapologetic weepie of the summer, based on John Green’s acclaimed YA novel. Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort (no, really) fight cancer, find out about the world and fall in love.

Obvious Child

Everything happens to Donna (Saturday Night Live alumna Jenny Slate), an aspiring standup comic who in one fell swoop finds herself dumped, fired and pregnant, and must rise to meet the challenges of adulthood.

June 13 How to Train Your Dragon 2

Five years after uniting the Vikings and the dragons on their home island, Hiccup and Toothless find themselves at the center of a battle with Drago Bludvist, who controls his own army of enslaved dragons.

Edge of Tomorrow

Groundhog Day meets Source Code in this tale pitting futuristic soldiers against aliens over and over, until the soldiers finally get it right. Starring running Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise’s “intense” face, and Emily Blunt.

22 Jump Street

Undercover cops Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum graduate to college, where one hopes they’ll at least blend in better.

And So It Goes

Obnoxious real-estate agent Michael Douglas gets an assist from neighbor Diane Keaton when his granddaughter is suddenly left in his care. Rob Reiner directs. Your parents will love it.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Led by Caesar (Andy Serkis, the Olivier of motion capture), an army of highly evolved apes is pushed to the brink of war by the human survivors of a deadly virus (Gary Oldman, et al).

June 20 Jersey Boys

July 18 Jupiter Ascending

Guy Pearce tracks criminals through the Australian Outback, aided reluctantly by the wounded accomplice they abandoned (Robert Pattinson).

Andy and Lana Wachowski return with another mind-bending F/Xtravaganza, a new tale of destiny and interplanetary chess in which Mila Kunis is The One, Channing Tatum is her lupine protector, and Eddie Redmayne does a trilogy’s worth of overacting in the trailer alone.

The Purge: Anarchy

For No Good Reason (KC)

This documentary explores the art and life of Ralph Steadman, the mild-mannered, softspoken Brit whose distinct style and vivid, nightmarish illustrations became synonymous with the writings of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots co-star in this adaptation of a Nick Hornby novel about four suicidal people who form their own support group after converging on the same rooftop on New Year’s Eve.

The Rover

The cast of Think Like a Man (Won?) reunites for a Las Vegas wedding, though the bachelor and bachelorette parties appear to drive the plot, while Kevin Hart controls the volume.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Bug fixes in Version 4.0 include an upgrade from Shia LaBeouf to Mark Wahlberg.

July 2 Deliver Us From Evil

Based on a true story — work with us here — a Bronx detective (Eric Bana) investigates a series of crimes whose persons of interest just happen to be demon-possessed.

Earth to Echo

Super 8 meets E.T. in this tale of a group of

Disney’s in-house Pixar knockoff did all right for itself, so naturally they’ve given it the franchise treatment by enlisting air racer Dusty Crophopper (voiced by Dane Cook) into the park service to fight forest fires. Swept up in this year’s purge are a father seeking to avenge his son’s death, a luckless couple experiencing car trouble, and any number of innocents abducted for the amusement of the rich. Expect more sequels; despair for the human condition.

The Hundred-Foot Journey

AUTHENTIC GREEK & ITALIAN FOOD since 1988

Helen Mirren headlines this Oprah-produced tale of an Indian restaurateur who moves his family to a village in France, where he clashes with a Michelin-rated chef. (To clarify: Dame Helen does not portray the Indian restaurateur. She’s good, but she’s no Meryl.)

Into the Storm

Tornado porn, apparently without sharks.

Lucy

Drug mule Scarlett Johansson absorbs some of the junk she’s transporting and transforms into an omniscient superhuman badass of epic proportions.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Off the Wall

‘We danced our asses off’

S

o says Ren McCormack, the coolest highschooler in movie history. Coolest because he’s played by Kevin Bacon, who was 25 when he starred in Footloose — old enough to convey with his performance that school dances really are the stuff of Ecclesiastes. The next best thing to a high school dance is, of course, a free outdoor movie on a warm summer night. And if the movie happens to feature a distinctive soundtrack, and if movie and music are both turning 30 this year, and if movie and music come at you on a downtown rooftop where you’ve drunk a little complimentary beer — well, then, you’re at Off the Wall. It’s the time of year when the Kansas City Public Library trades its suit for some board shorts and lets the occasional movie-delivered F-bomb reverberate from its terrace, and this time The Pitch is throwing in as co-sponsor. This season’s lineup, dubbed “1984: Rave New World,” starts with Footloose (Friday, May 23) and also includes Breakin’, Purple Rain, Repo Man and Stop Making Sense. I’ll be at all of them, comparing notes on each movie with KC’s premier film brainiac, Robert W. Butler. The Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City screens a local short before each feature, KC Bier Co. gives you samples, there’s a Milwaukee Delicatessen special at mypitchdeals. com, and we spin the soundtracks before the sun goes down. Off the Wall is at the Central Library, 14 West 10th Street. Doors at 8 p.m., movie shortly before 9. For details, see kclibrary.org. — Scott WilSon

low-frequency purr we’re accustomed to hearing in horror films. The sound design is paramount to Sleep’s strange power. Kahn blends natural and artificial rhythms into a lush, unsettling soundscape. Doctors tramp through high prairie grasses to the martial report of a snare drum, laid over the hushing drone of cicadas. Original compositions by Kahn and Keith Wood dwell alongside “Amazing Grace” and “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad,” sung with haunting grace by local musical-theater whiz Shelby Floyd. With the exception of Floyd, whose performance is as striking as ever, Kahn relies on untrained actors. A few speak selfconsciously, but their improvisations and conversations feel mostly authentic. Kahn’s camera frames iconic Kansas City landmarks as backdrops to an alien world. Exterior shots of homes are rare, and interiors seem to bleed together as the camera follows subjects through rooms and up winding staircases, only to jump-cut to the same figures in a new location. By stringing these shots together, Kahn builds a labyrinth of spatial impossibilities. The jagged cuts manipulate time along

Stills from Sleep with space. The camera often reframes actors in the middle of lines or speeches, a disorienting call to the constructed nature of the film and an editing move that builds a frenetic pace. In other sections, time seems to slow and stretch on indefinitely, as when a doctor paddles through a rooftop pool. One male doctor, to his companion’s annoyance, waxes philosophically on David Hume and the “hyper-real” color of a rosebush. Yet another investigates a wall of photographs inside, subjects posed and perfectly retouched: “They just don’t look real.” Nothing does. Kahn’s film seems equal parts fertile fantasy and critical evocation of the Freudian unheimlich — the quite literally unhomelike home. But the head trip is worth the ride. Kahn bewitches us by blurring boundaries between script and improvisation, between manipulated footage and realtime recording. Don’t Go Back to Sleep lets us dawdle at that threshold and dwell where we can feel both artificial and real, awake and dreaming.

The Two Towers

Is iPho Tower Asian? French? Both-ish.

pike Nguyen’s seven-week-old midtown restaurant, iPho Tower, might become like New York City’s elegant French-Vietnamese Le Colonial when it grows up. Right now, it’s more like something out of the film Saigon Electric: flashy and wildly colored, tuned to a soundtrack that veers from Rosemary Clooney to gospel to sultry house music, depending on the time of day. The shifting personalities on view at iPho Tower, which gets progressively louder and more seductive the later the hour, is one reason that this off beat venue is already an appealing place to order food after midnight. Chubby’s, just up the street, has never seemed more boring. The midtown faithful will recall that this address used to house Chubby’s, back in the 1980s. Following a rainbow coalition of wellintentioned but short-lived restaurants that attempted such unlikely flavors as Pakistani food and Caribbean cuisine, Nguyen has taken the space and spent a small fortune gutting it. The long, narrow storefront looks, for the first time in ages, stylish — at least if your idea of style runs to the theatrical. There’s barely an inch of space that hasn’t been given a self-consciously eye-catching detail: paper lanterns here, a gilded Buddha there. The idea, says Vietnamese-born Nguyen, is for patrons to walk in and feel right away that they’ve left Kansas City. It’s a fine ambition, and he has executed it with some success. Pass through these portals, and you set aside this grimy stretch of midtown, in favor of … well, where are we? e r o M This might be Paris, if Paris were very small and lacked building at ine Onl .com codes. There’s a 3-foot h c pit wire structure — I’d call it Eiffel Tower–ish — on the bar, next to a laughing-Buddha statue. The two together suggest the supposed Gallic influence on a kitchen that makes excellent traditional Vietnamese dishes (steaming pho bowls, banh mi sandwiches) and a few “fusion” creations. The latter nod halfheartedly toward the French sensibilities that dominated cultural life in Vietnam’s larger cities from 1887 to 1954. Some of the dishes listed under the heading “Vietnamese/French Fusion” are tasty but not foolproof. The “fusion beef stew” has a silky sauce flavored with star anise and cloves, but you have to check with the servers before you commit. If the kitchen has just made a pot of the stuff, the beef is likely to be tough; if it has been simmering for a couple of hours, it’s nirvana.

The squares of fried tofu are pillowy-light under an almost invisible crust, and the pretty little baked pork buns, stuffed with a savory pork barbecue, are delicious. The Vietnamese crepes, more of those “fusion” creations, slips smartly seasoned grilled pork and shrimp inside a crispy flapjack, colored yellow from turmeric. Trust me, it’s just the ticket at 1 a.m. Another crepe — a soft, sweet one — is for now the sole dessert offering at iPho Tower. It’s a disturbingly neon-green affair, filled with coconut-flavored cream cheese and strawberry purée. “Where’s the crème brûlée?” I asked Nguyen. “Where are the éclairs?” “We will have crème brûlée,” Nguyen said. “We’re experimenting with other desserts right now. Everything takes time, you know.” Right now, Nguyen is juggling the Broadway iPho Tower and the construction of a second location, soon to open in the space formerly occupied by his Pho Hoa restaurant on Independence Avenue. (It will serve the same menu as the midtown venue.) “When I get the Independence Avenue restaurant open,” Nguyen told me, “my focus will be completely on my menu. We’ll have more desserts — French-style desserts.” Merci beaucoup.

hen I walk into Affäre at 4 p.m. on a Wednesday, the tables are immaculately laid with pristine white linens and brightly polished place settings. The big room is empty, making the walk to the immense concrete bar at the back of the restaurant feel long. Chelsea Almeida, Affäre’s dedicated head bartender, gives me a bright smile when I find her. Almeida has the warmth and energy of a barista, but she easily summons a bartender’s authority, too. As we talk possibilities, she points to various spirits on the shelves and thinks aloud what she might mix for me. “What’s your favorite thing right now?” I ask her, trying a different route. “I really love Pimm’s, actually,” Almeida says, pulling a bottle of Pimm’s No. 1 from its spot and setting it in front of me. I consider myself familiar already — a stance she has predicted and is ready to outmaneuver. “It may surprise you,” she says, as she sets about retrieving the rest of the ingredients she has decided upon: Old Overholt rye, a lemon, a small bottle of bitters. “The No. 1 is a gin-based liqueur out of England,” Almeida tells me as she works. “There are seven different numbered Pimm’s, but you can’t really get any besides the gin and the vodka [the No. 6] — the rye and the brandy and the rum are all, sadly, phased out. And the original Pimm’s cocktail

is just Pimm’s No. 1 and lemonade. The other Pimm’s Cup elements came later.” Affäre’s Pandora stream is set to a Paul Simon station, and Almeida lightly sings along to Elton John’s “Your Song” as she shakes a mixture and strains it into a dainty coupe glass. She garnishes the drink with a lemon peel and puts it in front of me. It’s a rich, deep amber, and Almeida darkens it further by topping the drink with a teaspoon of port. I’m used to Pimm’s in the summer, but the cocktail Almeida has prepared reminds me of fall leaves and misty mornings. A l meida has aga i n read my m i nd. “Pimm’s does make for a great fruit-based summer drink,” she says. “It’s called a fruitcup liqueur, so there’s a lot of strawberries and oranges. But it’s summery without being light. There’s some heaviness to it.” I take a sip and find the heaviness, but not in a thick, syrupy way suggested by the drink’s dark color. I taste something similar to a lighter version of an Old Fashioned. The rye tamps down the sweetness, and rather than adding simple syrup or other sugars, Almeida has opted for orange bitters and port, the better to bring out the fruit notes already in Pimm’s. Almeida’s clairvoyance has paid off: I’m surprised and pleased. “There’s so much in Pimm’s itself,” Almeida explains as she pours me a straight

Almeida knows what you want before you do. taste. “It’s very compacted, and there’s a lot of room to pull other flavors out of it. You can get sweetness. You can get dry. You can get fruit. Sometimes you can get bitterness.” Even on its own, the Pimm’s No. 1 offers an unexpected buoyancy, an airiness, like a liquid that has been laced with pollen rather than thickened with honey. I sip and she goes on: “It’s like wine that way — you can taste a million different things in it. I like hearing what other people think it tastes like, and I’ve had a lot of fun playing around with it.”

t has been nearly 20 years since Kathy Hale owned a restaurant. That was Daily Bread, a vegetarian venue that operated out of several different locations from 1991 through 1996. It wasn’t an easy five years, but she never lost her taste for the food business. Hale, a longtime Pilates instructor, began cooking organic meals for many of her exercise clients in 2011. “I wanted them to eat healthier, so I started doing grocery tours, then 28-day food challenges,” she says. “Finally, I started cooking packaged meals for the clients that wanted them.” Soon, that first batch of new food customers told their friends about Hale’s all-organic meals. Suddenly she was back in the cooking business, creating a catering and preparedmeal company last year, called Can I Have a Bite Inc. “My concept is that people need to know the story behind the food they’re eating,” says Hale, who reviewed restaurants for The Pitch in the early 1990s. “I want people who eat the food that I prepare to know what farmers grew the produce, what kind of soil it was, what grains were used to feed the meat and poultry.” Meat? Poultry? “Because of the Daily Bread, many people assumed that I was a vegetarian,” Hale tells me. “I’m not, although I’m passionate about eating healthy. That includes hamburgers.” Can I Have a Bite has been selling — primarily through its website, the BadSeed Market and a few local stores — prepared meals for vegans, vegetarians and those on Paleo diets. “I also make what I call real food,” Hale says. “It’s completely organic but with no dietary restrictions. It’s the kind of food that I eat.” Later this month, Hale moves her business into its first brick-and-mortar location, at 8011 Wornall. The space will house both her catering kitchen (where she plans to teach cooking classes) and a retail shop with refrigerated

Pilates instructor Hale is stretching her culinary talents in a new endeavor. deli cases stocked with grab-and-go entrées, salads, soups, vegetables and side dishes. She expects to open the retail part of the business by mid-June. Hale’s new spot, a long brick structure dating back to the late 1930s, was home for 22 years to Waldo Pets. But long before that, during the Depression, it was a friedchicken-and-beer joint (where you could also get Mel-O-Froz ice cream), owned by Mary Ballman, who kept expanding the building so that, by the 1940s, it was a swinging jazz club called Mary’s Place. Ballman’s menu focused on the booze, but she also sold $1.85 fried-chicken dinners, fried-ham-andcheese sandwiches and the occasional salad. Hale’s Can I Have a Bite sandwiches won’t be much like Ballman’s. “We’ll have hot lunches available every day that we’re open,” she says. “I’m talking with different local bread makers about using their specialty loaves, so that I can have a grilled cheese of the day made with the bread of the day.” Hale’s storefront takes up one small part of the deceptively large building, which has been subdivided by its current owner. (A new tattoo parlor is at the far southern end.) For now, she’s adamant that it won’t be a restaurant, or even a carryout place with eat-in dining. “It’s not zoned for that anyway,” Hale says. “Have you seen the parking situation? My customers will mostly be running in, picking up their food and leaving.” Can I Have a Bite, for which Hale is designing seasonal menus, will be catering and selling packaged meals out of the venue before the retail shop officially opens next month. Hale plans to be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Old AmericAn lAw Cadillac Flambe

Since forming in 2003, Cadillac Flambe has touted the inf luence of Mississippi Delta blues on its sound. On the band’s latest full-length, the necessary cogs and parts are still there — gutwrenching slide-guitar reels, window-rattling rhythms, and both Kris and Havilah Bruders’ earthquake vocals — but these new songs are faster and angrier than anything Cadillac Flambe has put out before. The record opens with the furious “Shakin’ Baby,” a speedball jam that dares you to dance or die trying, and the pace only increases from there. “Bullets” is positively hellish; by the end of the song, Havilah Bruders will have you convinced that she is summoning demons from the netherworld. The only respite from all this energy comes with album closer “Goin’ Home,” on which Kris Bruders assures you, with his deep voice, that you are indeed going home. 54

W.T. Newton has a hell of a voice. One moment, he’s growling into the microphone with a metal show’s worth of ferocity and menace (“I Don’t Need No Dead Man”), and the next, he serenades you with a westernswing tale of woe (“Hell and High Water”). On most of this record, though, Newton turns up the growling and hollering a nd dow nplays his crooner side. The Carbondale, Illinois, group makes the most of Newton’s splintery chops, filling the record with just enough lap steel, fiddle and harmonica to build a solid soapbox for some popular themes: namely, the devil and death. Some songs border on murder-ballad territory — a style that the County Graves could probably master easily — but for the most part, this Devil keeps to simpler stories. Newton and company tell them just fine.

Springfield, Missouri’s Clawhammer seems bent on confusing people. Named for a difficult style of banjo picking, in which the player forms a claw and picks downward (group banjoist Jason Childress sometimes does it this way), Clawhammer offers songs here that take the old-time hillbilly genre and unravel it, thread by thread. Things start innocently enough with “Set Me Free,” a washboard-heavy jaunt, but the song ends with an ominous, distorted mass of electronic crashes. “Love Sick” follows, and Chelsea Childress’ chilling, siren alto glides like a lullaby during a nightmare. “Run Rabbit Run” brings back the washboard chink, but by the end of the first verse, there’s also an electrified web of synths and effects pedals. None of these things should work together, but Clawhammer so carefully stitches up its sounds that you’re compelled to keep listening, trying to decipher the mystery.

Beale w rote Hard Time ’s 11 songs during a three-year stint in prison, and the influence of that environment is audible. Some songs get rhythmic jangles from the rattle of heavy chains. It’s not that hard to figure out just how I got here, on this long, hard road that I’ve been on, Beale sings on “Long Hard Road,” his voice plaintive and rusty. And on the heartbreaking “Chains,” he attests to a truth that he has come to know from the inside: One night the devil come to me, and he whispers in my ear/“Billy Beale, I’ll never take you down, ’cause you’re in hell right here.” If the theme is delivered with a heavy hand, the album remains a poignant, graceful collection from an unlikely source.

It’s a fun thing you enjoy with friends.” For Sonny Moore, the 26-year-old producer who records as Skrillex, that’s how simple dubstep success is. In a few short years, since 2010’s My Name Is Skrillex, Moore has ascended to the uppermost reaches of his genre, transcending dubstep and pushing the boundaries of electronic music. And he hasn’t forgotten the part about dancing with friends, as his latest release, Recess — the first full-length of his career — proves. trying to force people to sell records, dance music creates something that you can’t get from a record: a live atmosphere, the show and the event. That’s where I think the business and money side of it is, and where people get their inspiration for making tunes and making people dance. With that said, you don’t necessarily need a mainstream platform if you’re not really there to sell a million records. It’s easy for kids to put a SoundCloud and get noticed — if they’re good and if it’s quality. I think the fans are now inclined to discover stuff themselves. Like, back when MTV was only showing music videos and you could actually discover music. I think the Internet is like that. You can get lost in YouTube or SoundCloud and just find stuff for yourself. What do you think the next level is for electronic music? I think more and more people are seeing that there’s more to it than an EDM scene. The things that tie together myself, Warpaint and A$AP Rocky are the same, and that sort of speaks for itself. There is this magic that happens behind the scenes that brings artists together who are young and creative and who have the same vibe and similar style, even if the music is different. With music in general, even if you are playing in a band or not, everyone is using the electronic platform to treat music — no matter what genre it is — which I think is really exciting.

Saxophonist Tivon Pennicott was still in college when he joined jazz guitar master Kenny Burrell’s group. Since then, he has toured with the superstar jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding. This emerging artist brings his contemporary sax sound from New York to KC this weekend to play with the Dominique Sanders Trio. Sanders’ bass solos stand out as complex yet lyrical, grabbing your attention then drawing you in. Sanders leads Andrew Ouellette on keyboards and John Kizilarmut on drums, while Tivon Pennicott joins them Thursday at the Blue Room and Friday at Take Five. — Larry Kopitnik Dominique Sanders Trio with Tivon Pennicott, 7–11 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the Blue Room (1600 E. 18th St., 816-474-8463), no cover; 8–10 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Take Five Coffee + Bar (5336 W. 151st St., Leawood, 913-948-5550), $10 cover.

Metronomy

On the buoyant “Love Letters,” the title track of Metronomy’s latest album, the British fourpiece exuberantly announces, over a persistent and punchy drumbeat, the intention to, you know, keep on writing love letters. It’s a promise that permeates the rest of the record, as frontman Joseph Mount’s lyrics improve, and he seems to find all kinds of lovers and friends to sing to. It’s a catchy 40 minutes or so, the sort of easily likable stuff that summers are supposed to be made of. Maybe you’ll make a new pen pal on Friday at the Granada. Friday, May 23, the Granada (1020 Massachusetts, Lawrence, 785-842-1390)

Trans AM

It’s always remarkable when a band manages to stay together over decades, despite never having shot into the stratosphere of arena rock, à la the Eagles or Styx or any number of platinum-selling acts rolling this way sometime this summer. One such act: Trans AM, a band that has been together since 1990 and released plenty of albums without noteworthy sales and also without noteworthy defections. Its original three members are still together, and Wednesday at the RecordBar, they bring all the Krautrock goodness they can summon. This band was using electronic beats and synths long before popular radio made

Any run-of-the-mill cynic can guess why Riff Raff’s album Neon Icon has been delayed since its expected release date, back in January. But we won’t dwell on the hype behind the debut of Houston’s most outrageous rapper. Instead, let’s just welcome this brazen, splashy character — birth name Horst Simco — into our arms for the first time since his explosive and steamy performance at the Riot Room in December. Our own hometown hero Tech N9ne was present for that memorable gig. Who knows what, or who, Mr. Simco may bring to the stage this time. Thursday, May 22, Liberty Hall (644 Massachusetts, Lawrence, 785-749-1972)

Metronomy it cool, and they may yet be at it in another couple of decades. Wednesday, May 28, RecordBar (1020 Westport Road, 816-753-5207)

Jabee

In December, Oklahoma City MC Jabee released his latest full-length, Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt. It’s a weighty set that blends classic R&B, fuming drumbeats and smoking-gun horns. On “To Whom It May Concern,” that lyric becomes a mantra of denial. Everything is beautiful and nothing hurts, he forces out, Trying to keep it real, as usual, and nothing works. Whatever he might say, Jabee is making it work right now. Monday, May 26, Czar (1531 Grand, 816-421-0300)

The Pharmacy

I’ve never much liked the term “stoner rock,” but when it comes to the Seattle band the Pharmacy, the bong fits. On the band’s latest, Stoned and Alone, lead singer and guitarist Scott Yoder revels in garage-fuzzy sounds and leisurely,

ambling choruses. The whole thing gets a fairy dusting of ever-so-slightly off-key notes and jingles. If the Pharmacy didn’t make this album while its members were high (yeah, right), it has definitely made a soundtrack for getting high. No matter what your state, though, the record makes a perfectly dreamy ride. Saturday, May 24, Replay Lounge (946 Massachusetts, 785-749-7676)

Two Cow Garage

Although Two Cow Garage technically calls Columbus, Ohio, its home, the band has carved out a second nest in Kansas City — and it’s not hard to understand why. Singer Micah Schnabel’s voice is oddly irresistible; he sounds jagged and ruined, like an exmetalhead who screamed too loudly in his youth and is still ingesting a pack of cigarettes a day. And those imperfections only add to his appeal. The rest of the band pushes just as hard as Schnabel, and you aren’t likely to leave this show without a fine sheen of sweat and a satisfied smile. HOTTEST GAY CHATLINE

Dear Dan: I’m a genetic male with recurrent

questions about my gender identity. Wanting to maintain my stature in the professional world, keep my wife at my side and become who I feel like I am, I’ve experimented with crossdressing, chastity, antiandrogens and steroids. My wife and I have reached a middle ground where I can pursue sexual and aesthetic androgyny. I’ve started wearing unisex clothes, stepped up cardio to sculpt a more feminine shape, and I’m getting hair removal done. I want to keep my sex drive and sexual organs intact, but I want to urinate like a woman with no choice but to sit. There are body-modification communities out there that showcase this type of procedure (urethral reroute/relocation), but I don’t know where to start when it comes to tracking down someone to do it for me. Any advice? Do you know any piercers who have done this kind of work?

Seeking Insights That Take Erotic Rerouting Seriously Dear SITTERS: “Most urologists aren’t qualified to do this, let alone piercers — although there are aggressive ‘body modifiers’ out there. I wind up cleaning up their messes,” said Dr. Keith D. Newman, a urologist and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. “So my main piece of advice is to have a urologist do this, preferably someone who has experience with this surgery.” The procedure is known as a perineal urethrostomy. “It’s one of the numerous steps involved in total gender-reassignment surgery,” Newman said. “Doing this one thing probably won’t preclude further anatomical reassignment in the future. But there are potential complications and consequences from this altered anatomy.” The biggest is a heightened risk of urinarytract infections due to the shortened urethra. But that isn’t your only worry. “Any artificial orifice has a certain incidence of stricture,” Newman said. “So the opening might need frequent dilations or more surgery if this complication arises.” By “stricture,” Newman means “your new pee hole could shrink, narrow and start to close up.” And by “frequent dilations,” he means “you could wind up shoving steel rods up your urethra to stretch your new hole back open — frequently.” And there’s more. “There may be less than full diversion of urine (some may still come out the end of the penis) unless the urethra distal to the new opening is closed,” Newman said. “If it is closed, then we run into issues of what is called a ‘mucous fistula,’ and the urethra beyond the diversion might need to be irrigated from time to time.Urinary dermatitis may occur, so perineal care and good hygiene will be a must.”

How do you find a urologist who’ll perform this surgery? You make appointments with qualified urologists, tell them what you want, and risk being turned away. “But it’s the insurance company that will need convincing,” Newman said. “Many institutions do not allow any surgery for sexual reassignment in adults, so those waters will have to be navigated. And counseling might be helpful.” One final note… “Ejaculation will occur through that new hole in a somewhat nondirectable way,” Newman said. You’ll not only be peeing sitting down, but you’ll also be coming all over the back of your sack.

Dear Dan: I’m a 24-year-old gay male in a threeyear relationship with a man I love. I also have a diaper fetish. I told him about it once, nearly two years ago but have not brought it up since. Recently I’ve gone out to buy diapers. I don’t use them for pee or poop but I enjoy the feeling of wearing them. I’ve talked to other diaper lovers (DL) online, but I’ve never gotten the courage to meet up and experiment. I recently started talking with a guy who lives a few miles away who is also a DL. I don’t want to cheat on my boyfriend, but I would like to indulge my fetish at least once in my life. If there is no sex or kissing during the fetish play, would that be cheating? I would just change his diaper and powder him, and he would do the same to me and whatnot. Diapered Dilemma Dear DD: Here’s what Good Dan would say: Tell

your boyfriend that you love him, remind him about the conversation you had two years ago about your diaper fetish, and ask if he would be up for exploring this aspect of your sexuality with you. If not, then ask him how he would feel about your getting together with someone who shares your kink — not for sex, just for diapering and powdering and whatnot. If he doesn’t mind, great! If he does mind, then you need to think about whether staying in this relationship is wise because sooner or later, you’re going to cheat on him. Here’s what Bad Dan would say: Sneaking off to play with that other DL might help clarify things. Either you’ll learn that diaper play is something you can’t live without or you’ll realize that diapered reality is a lot less sexy than diaper fantasies and your kink will evaporate (unlikely). But Actual Dan took Bad Dan’s advice back when he was your age — about exploring his sexuality generally — and it helped clarify things for Actual Dan.
