But with fewer of them actually growing up on farms, they are not around livestock or large equipment enough to learn,” Swanson said. “What students learn when they study farm and ranch safety applies to activities off the farm or ranch. Like ATV safety.”
Participating in the quiz bowl does make farm safety top of mind explained Canton team member, Kaeden Bitterman.
Teammate, Jackie Kreber had a similar experience. She said farm safety techniques came to mind as she was cleaning horse stalls during a July storm.

“The other day I was driving a payloader up a hill and I was thinking about one of the questions from the Quiz Bowl. It asked, ‘What is the safe way to drive a full payloader up a hill?’ It made me think about what I was doing,” said Bitterman, who works for area farmers as well as helping out on his family’s farm.
“Farm and ranch work can be dangerous if safety is not top of mind,” explained Doug Sombke, president of South Dakota Farmers Union. “This is the reason Farmers Union hosts this contest each year. To keep safety top of mind.”

Our readers may be livestock ranchers or row crop farmers, and everywhere in between, however, we all have a common goal in mind. We feed and support the growing population, and want the next generation to find that same love and support that agriculture can offer.

In a DEFC, ethanol is used as a fuel to generate electricity rather than heat generated by combustion as in an engine. As a bonus, the approach requires no recharging time like is needed for battery-based electric vehicles, meaning consumers will have more options for alternatives to fossil fuels.

I still think those are the two biggest characteristics that potential farmers and ranchers need. But there are some other mighty important factors, too. Here’s a quick look at some of them.
Most farmers, especially ones with small operations, earn some kind of off-farm income. It might

Maybe I’m naive on this one, but there seems to be a strong correlation between success in farming and ranching and the willingness to help neighbors who need a little help at especially stressful times — illness, for example. The help that’s given usually is returned many fold over time. Sure, there are selfserving schemers who try to suck up free assistance without helping others. But I’d like to think that neighborliness is rewarded and lack of it is ultimately punished.

There’s an old saying that major league baseball players need a steady temperament. Their long season, full of success and failures, requires them to avoid getting too high or low. Every time I hear that saying, I think of farmers and ranchers.
Annual farm income varies
I once was asked what traits or attributes would-be farmers need most to succeed in their potential occupation. The questioner was making polite conversation and didn’t want a lengthy response, so I kept it simple. Two things, I said. First, a connection or “in,” usually a relative or close family friend, who provides access to farmland and equipment, which can be virtually impossible to obtain without help. Second, being a clear-headed, practical person who listens to, and learns from, a wide range of experts; there’s just too much for one person to learn completely on his or her own.
When both prices and yields are good, farmers can make a lot of money. When prices or yields or both are poor, farmers can struggle to finish in the black. That leads to widely disparate net farm income — say $90,000 one year and just $10,000 the next year on the same farm. (As an aside, an average of $50,00 for the two years isn’t much for a modern family, especially one that’s covering all the cost of its own medical coverage.) Dealing with those extremes increases the need for highly disciplined spending and financial planning. I’ve heard multiple anecdotes (which may have been exaggerated) that variable annual income is particularly difficult for new farm spouses without an ag background.

be a part-time job or a side business or something else, but they do something to make extra money to pay at least part of their family living expenses. In my experience, there’s not much respect from their peers for farmers who refuse to generate off-farm income and then complain bitterly about the unfairness of farming.

FAIR MARKETS ARE ALWAYS THE FOCUS FOR ROSTIN BEHNAM AT CFTC
“When I think about the ‘80s and the problems with the farm economy then, my No. 1 focus is looking at that toolbox and making sure you have every available tool at your disposal as a farmer,” Behnam said. “Whether that’s crop insurance, commodity programs, or having the fair markets, they’re all important. … When I’m thinking about how the markets are affecting contracts and commodity markets, I see now an increased risk environment that we need to watch from a production and a sales side.”

That’s his role as Chairman on the five-member Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which oversees derivative markets in the United States. He visited the board of directors for the South Dakota Corn Growers Association and the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council on the South Dakota State University campus on Aug. 8, fielding questions on everything from cattle and farm markets to fertilizer and cryptocurrency.

Part of that effort includes empowering the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Justice to provide a new joint channel for farmers and ranchers to confidentially report complaints of potentially unfair and anti-competitive practices in the agricultural sector.

Valued at $13, fairgoers purchased the lunch for only 35 cents. Fairgoer Christi Lunders, Huron,
said she was happy that this lunch helps explain to consumers how little farmers and ranchers receive for the crops and livestock they raise.
HURON, S.D. - With grocery prices soaring, doesn’t it make sense that farmers and ranchers would also see an increase in profits? This just isn’t the case, explained Union Center rancher, Dallis Basel.
Basel said he appreciates South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) hosting its annual Farmers Share Lunch during the South Dakota State Fair, because feeding more than 1,000 fairgoers lunch for the price a farmer receives for the meal’s ingredients helps connect consumers to the truth.
“Big conglomerate food processors and the packers are making exorbitant profits – not family farmers and ranchers,” explained Basel, who serves on the state board for SDFU.

“I think everyone should know how little they earn for the work that they do. I grew up in a rural community, so I understand how little farmers and ranchers earn. It did surprise me that for a $13, meal they only earn 35 cents, I was hoping they earned more,” Lunders said.

“We go grocery shopping just like everyone else,” said Basel, who raises sheep and cattle together with his wife, Tammy. “Even though prices are up in the grocery store, we do not earn much more than break even on cattle and right now, the sheep markets have bottomed out, so we are going backward when
