Welcome... to the Spring edition of What’s On in South Derbyshire and The National Forest Amid rolling English countryside dotted with picturesque villages you will find so much to enjoy; from historic houses and gardens, to meandering rivers and canals, to archery and snowboarding. All set in the heart of The National Forest, Britain’s most ambitious environmental project. Linking the ancient forests of Needwood and Charnwood, more than eight million trees have already been planted. The woodland is being created on a scale not seen for more than a thousand years, creating stunning landscapes and wildlife habitats. Come and enjoy it this season.

Highlights... Spring is here and now is the time to get out and enjoy it in South Derbyshire with a great line up of events... Explore nature this Spring with lambing at Calke, bird walks and wildlife watching at Rosliston Forestry Centre and Open Gardens throughout the area. Indulge in unique culinary experiences with courses at Seasoned Cookery School, wild food cooking in the Forest, wine tasting at Sealwood Vineyard and a celebration of market gardening in Melbourne. Enjoy great performances with Melbourne Acoustic Festival, Choir in the Park at Eureka, Rapunzel at Sharpe’s, Whistlewood Music Festival, the Bearded Theory and Sausage & Cider Festivals at Catton, plus great tribute acts at Melbourne Assembly Rooms. Get creative and try anything from drawing, writing, painting and anime art, to tapestry, wet felt working, embroidery and fabric dyeing, to pottery, basket weaving, cake decorating and stone carving. Mark the twentieth anniversary of South Derbyshire’s relationship with Toyota City in Japan and have a go at Taiko drumming or making your own Japanese tea bowl using the ancient pottery technique known as Raku. Celebrate Easter with an Eggtravaganza at Swadlincote Ski Centre, an Explorer challenge at Eureka Park and Easter crafts with Kraftiz at Rosliston. Sample the Repton Women’s Institute centenary celebrations with tea and cake, and a fascinating exhibition of archive material from their long history. Get active and try cycling, snowboarding, kite flying, djembe drumming - or walking, with the launch of Circling Swadlincote, a heritage walk with mills, mines and murder!
