Re-imagine the possibilities with natural terracotta Hunter Douglas has announced the completion of first NBK Terracotta Facade System in Philippines for Niagara Industrial Equipment Corp. Building. Manila, Philippines – Hunter Douglas is pleased to announce the successful completion of its very first NBK Architectural Terracotta system in Philippines for Niagara Industrial Equipment Corporation, a leading fabricator and manufacturer of ventilating products for buildings and industrial uses. Founded in 1968, Niagara has more than 30 years of experience in making quality fans and blowers suitable for various applications ranging from general ventilation to various industrial processes like dust collection, high pressure blower for combustion air and for burner systems. This was achieved as the ventilated terracotta façade kept the building cool. Indeed, the choice of NBK Architectural Terracotta facade system was a commitment by Niagara to move towards a more sustainable future for its stakeholders and customers. NBK Architectural Terracotta facades have opened up a completely new dimension in façade design and has been embraced by architects around the world for outstanding versatility, design flexibility and building performance characteristic. Terracotta is manufactured from 100 percent natural raw materials. As we look more towards environmental protection and sustainability, this is a building material that will certainly contribute towards a greener and more sustainable environment.” The rainscreen and sunscreen components of the NBK Architectural Terracotta panels provide major benefits in the thermal performance of buildings due to their UV resistance and “back ventilation” properties, which assist in maintaining a dry cavity that relieves buildup of hot air. For this project, the owner has also installed rockwool insulation at the back of the NBK tiles to further reduce heat transmission into the building. The main advantages of the panels include:

The days of grey box retailers are numbered, as new report outlines the case for green retail Sydney, Australia – A new repor t f ro m t h e Wo r l d G re e n B u i l d i n g Council ( WorldGBC) finds that green retail environments can enhance the customer experience and drive greater profits. Health, Wellbeing and Productivity in Retail: The Impact of Green Buildings on People and Profit finds that most retailers are currently missing massive opportunities to better understand how the physical retail environment c a n i m p a c t s t a f f, c u s t o m e r s a n d business performance. “ The days of ‘grey box retailers’ are numbered,” said WorldGBC Chief Executive O fficer, Terri Wills. “ This report is about empowering retailers to look within their own properties to u n d e r s t a n d a n d m o n e t i s e h ow b e t te r, m o re s u s t a i n a b l e p hys i c a l environments can drive profit, and in doing so, ultimately strengthen the business case for greener, healthier buildings,” said Ms Wills. Romilly Madew, Chief Executive
Officer of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and WorldGBC board member, said retailers that successfully embrace sustainability will have an unassailable market advantage for years to come. “Sustainability has been businessa s - u s u a l i n t h e co m m e rc i a l o f f i ce market for some time. More than 650 office projects around the countr y have Green Star ratings, and a quarter of Australia’s CBD office space is Green Starcertified,” said Ms Madew. “While movement has been slower in the retail sector – with 33 centres achieving Green Star ratings – the industry’s leaders are now seizing the sustainability agenda and this report will undoubtedly spur them on,” said Ms Madew. Stockland now has 13 Green Star ratings for retail centres under its belt, and Frasers Property Australia gained Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star – Retail Centre v1 gong for The Ponds in 2015. Coles achieved a 4 Star Green Star
rating for its Hallam store in south east Melbourne, and Kathmandu opened its first flagship Green Starregistered retail store during 2015. Emerging evidence, outlined in the WorldGBC’s report, includes: · Research by the International Council of Shopping Centres, which suggests that lifestyle centres – connected sets of uncovered stores with pedestrianised walkways that incorporate nature – perform better than conventional malls, with increased numbers of stores visited and higher numbers of repeat visits. · American retailer Walmart’s findings that daylit areas of stores deliver higher sales per square metre than those areas artificially lit. · Research suggesting that customers are likely to buy more merchandise in stores with natural surroundings; customers rate spaces with greenery as friendlier, say they would stay longer and visit more frequently, and would be willing to pay a higher price for the same product.

New Dubai tower to surpass Burj Khalifa Dubai, UAE – Emaar Properties has unveiled a glittering new icon in the heart of Dubai Creek Harbour. The magnificent new tower will surpass the height of Burj Khalifa, currently the world’s tallest building. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, chose the design by renowned Spanish/ Swiss neo-futuristic architect, structural engineer, sculptor and painter Santiago Calatrava Valls, from a competitive international design pitch for this new landmark. The Tower serves as the vibrant core of Dubai Creek Harbour, a 6 square kilometre world-class masterplannned development that is two times the size of Downtown Dubai and located 10 minutes from the Dubai International Airport. Design palette The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour draws design inspiration from the lily and evokes the image of a minaret, which is a common feature and distinctive aspect of Islamic culture. The elongated oval-shaped bud and geometric texture set the template for the observation decks. The slender stem serves as the analogy for the structure, which is engineered to its most efficient diameter. It is linked to the ground with sturdy cables, in turn, inspired by the delicate ribbing of the lily leaves. The cable array gives the structure its strength, anchoring the ‘bud’ securely to the ground with technical precision using modern engineering materials.

Precision engineering The design will be finalised following elaborate wind tunnel testing and all mandatory seismic testing. Every aspect of The Tower is designed and being developed to the highest international standards of safety – from the choice of materials to the technology being used. All local government codes and regulations will be adhered to with close co-ordination and guidance from the concerned authorities.
A visual spectacle Celebrating the iconic status of The Tower, the lighting will emphasise the ‘flower bud’ design as a floating element at the top of the structure, serving as a beacon of light at night. The structural core and tension cables will be gently and dynamically illuminated. Movement Lighting will be used to enhance not only the visitor journey but also the view from outside.
Green features The Tower takes into consideration environmental and sustainability features that will serve as industry benchmarks. It starts with the thoughtful design with an environment-friendly tram service to be integrated for effortless access. On-foot visitors have a multitude of access points on to the plaza. A number of green corridors are envisaged for pedestrian access and effortless connectivity with Dubai Creek Harbour.

NZGBC CEO Alex Cutler resigns Auckland, New Zealand – New Zealand Green Building Council’s Chief Executive, Alex Cutler, has announced that she will leave the organisation later this year. She has been in the role since May 2010. Ms Cutler will continue to lead the organisation during the recruitment process and work with the new chief executive to provide a smooth transition from a member perspective. New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) Board Chair Mary-Jane Daly said Ms Cutler has led the organisation’s growth and maturity in a number of positive ways. “She has brought new tools such as Homestar and NABERSNZ to the market, diversified NZGBC’s income streams and grown the business. In that time she has also served as Chair of the Construction Industry Council for two years, sat on the Building Advisory Panel to Government and represented
NZGBC at the World Green Building Council.” Ms Cutler said: “It has been an amazing six years steering this organisation - I have loved the role and have been privileged to work with many talented people, both in the NZGBC team a n d a c ro s s o u r m em b er s h i p base. Working with members to embed sustainability into their business, be that at a strategic level or through a project-based approach, has been both challenging and hugely rewarding. But it’s time for me to move on to new challenges, and also spend more time with my family.” She added: “At NZGBC, we’ve been laying the groundwork to prepare the organisation for anticipated changes in the market. We’re still at an early stage in that three-year business plan, but now feels like the right time to hand over to

a new chief executive to lead that next stage of evolution. New Smart Cities Plan promises big things, says GBCA Sydney, Australia – The Australian Government’s new Smart Cities Plan can drive investment in projects that improve the sustainability of our cities, but stops short of a commitment to meet best practice benchmarks for green buildings, precincts and infrastructure. The Australian Government has released its Smart Cities Plan, which promises to “coordinate and drive smarter city policy” and to draw on innovative finance mechanisms, such as the ‘value capture’ model, to deliver essential infrastructure, drive innovation and improve the sustainability of our cities. Chief Executive Officer of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), Romilly Madew, is pleased to see city cities policy in the government’s sights. “We are living in the century of the city – and this demands fresh thinking, smart policy and committed political leaders,” said Ms Madew. “We are pleased to see that priority will be placed on investments that improve environmental outcomes, and that the Australian Government promises to encourage the use of rating systems such as Green Star. The Smart Cities Plan acknowledges that Green Star can improve the sustainability, quality and efficiency of buildings and precincts. Fujita Kanko targets Taiwan with new Taipei hotel to open in 2019 Tokyo, Japan – Leading Japanese hotelier Fujita Kanko Inc. announced it will open a new Taipei hotel in 2019. Taiwanese real estate developer Huang Hsiang Construction Corporation will build and own the hotel. Fujita Kanko will manage the 248-room hotel under one of its brands. It will be Fujita Kanko’s second overseas hotel, following a Seoul hotel projected to open in 2018. “Globalisation is a new chapter for Fujita Kanko, building on our 60 years of hospitality experience in Japan,” said Mr Akira Segawa, Fujita Kanko’s President and CEO. “We expect our strongest growth from Asian tourists, and entering the Taiwanese market is a top priority for us. It will also help build visibility for our brands among Taiwanese,” added Mr Segawa. In 2015, approximately 3.7 million Taiwanese visited Japan, about 29 percent more than in 2014. Walking and Cycling Plan – A new requirement for developers Singapore – The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) are introducing a new requirement for developers to submit a Walking and Cycling Plan ( WCP) so that the needs of pedestrians and c yclists are considered upfront in their development plans. This is part of the government’s efforts to realise the Walk Cycle Ride SG vision, to make walking, cycling and riding public transport a way of life for Singaporeans. The WCP ensures that new developments are designed to be thoughtful to the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorists. Through good design that minimise conflict between users of different mobility options, we can create a safer, more accessible and people-friendly environment for all. “We can do more to improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists in our built environment. Often, we see pedestrians and cyclists having to negotiate traffic across driveways, or service roads before they can enter the developments. There is also room to improve suppor ting facilities such as bicycle parking and a good signage system, as these facilities can also play an important part in creating a seamless experience for pedestrians and cyclists. Therefore, we will work closely with developers to design our built environment with the needs of pedestrians and cyclists in mind. Only then would we be able to encourage more to walk, cycle, and ride the public transport in their daily commute and as part of a more active lifestyle,” said Mr Chew Men Leong, Chief Executive of LTA. As part of the WCP, developers will have to plan for the safety, convenience and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists in the development design. The walking a n d c yc l i n g ro u te s f ro m k e y t ra n s p o r t nodes and surrounding areas should be re v i e we d c a re f u l l y, w i t h p rov i s i o n s fo r covered walkways or linkways, and safe pedestrian and cyclist crossings. It should also incorporate facilities for c yclists such as bicycle parking facilities, shower rooms and lockers. Vehicular routes should be located away from pedestrian and cyclist routes to better ensure safety for these users. The WCP will be required of developers from July 2016, and will apply for a start, to commercial developments, such as shopping complexes, offices, business parks, as well as schools, where we expect high pedestrian and cyclist traffic.

Brisbane, Australia – At the conclusion of an extensive consultation period undertaken by the Paris 2024 Bid Committee, international sports and entertainment design practice Populous and Egis, an international group offering engineering, project structuring and operations services, have been selected for the provision of technical assistance in the development of plans for 38 Olympic and Paralympic venues for the Paris 2024 bid. The scope of this partnership, in association with ISC, a sport and culture consulting agency, will include ensuring existing venues are ready for the scale and needs of Olympic and Paralympic events; as well as designing both new and temporary venues and facilities, allowing Paris 2024 to deliver successful and truly memorable Olympic and Paralymic Games. With unique major events experience comprising involvement in 13 Olympic and 7 Paralympic Games, including Sydney 2000, London 2012, and Rio 2016, Populous are also the only firm to have designed 3 main Olympic stadiums. A seniors living facility for arts lovers Sydney, Australia – Leading international architecture and design firm, ThomsonAdsett, has designed a retirement living village for arts patrons, claimed to be the first of its kind in Australia. The Streeton Park development is a short walk from the Heide Museum of Modern Art and overlooks the Yarra River. The precinct is a long-established creative hub for the arts community in Melbourne. The recently completed $40 million project accommodates 85 premium independent living apartments, alongside a business centre, fine dining restaurant, sports bar, salon and wellness centre. Residents of Yishun River Green get interactive playground Singapore – Playpoint (Singapore) Pte Ltd has installed the first interactive family park for Block 330 in Yishun River Green HDB estate in Singapore. The interactive playground incorporates the first interactive light installation by Jen Lewin, Crooked Houses by Monstrum as well as the Hammock Trellis. The Mini Pool consists of 16 individual pads placed in the playground surface in two small installations that interact with a wash of colours to the delight of children and families. At the centre of the playground lies a spiderweb-like structure where kids can clamour onto via a tunnel and reward themselves with a quick descent down the slide. Not forgetting, the Crooked Houses, by Monstrum known for the whimsical designs, are slightly slanted and play on the structure is entirely left up to the imagination of the kids. The huge and tall slide only adds to the fun factor! Commenting on the installation, Mr Jason Sim, Managing Director, Playpoint (Singapore) Pte Ltd said: “The playground marks a new trend where we incorporate interactive lights installation, play hills and cool play sculptures, never seen in public housing before. This was the initiative of Nee Soon Town Council and SA Chua Architects Pte Ltd, who wanted an interesting playground instead of the cookie cutter playgrounds found everywhere.” The Pool was recently showcased at the i Light Marina Bay 2015 Festival in Singapore. Founded in 2001, Playpoint has grown to be a regional playground specialist in Asia designing playground for iconic developments. It has recently won the 2015 LIAS Award for Playground.

Barangaroo Reserve named Australia’s best infrastructure project Sydney, Australia – Barangaroo Reserve has been named Project of the Year at Infrastructure Partnership Australia’s (IPA) prestigious National Infrastructure Awards, amongst hundreds of entrants. Located along Sydney’s famous waterfront, Barangaroo Reserve serves as a landmark project that collides building, bridge and landscape design to arrive at an impressive, multi-use destination featuring a public reserve. The iconic community project was acknowledged for its world first engineering feats, complexity, creativity and deep commitment to sustainability. Aurecon fulfilled the role of lead design consultant for civil and marine works and provided structural engineering, civil engineering, 3D modelling, project management, materials engineering, and temporary works and geotechnical services. The redevelopment, managed by the Barangaroo Delivery Authority for the NSW Government, saw a derelict container wharf transformed into a reimagined Sydney Harbour headland park, complete with a 75 000 cubic metre sub-terrain space (The Cutaway), Barangaroo Reserve. Benoy’s portfolio expands in the Philippines Hong Kong – Benoy announced its expansion across the Philippines as the firm’s portfolio grows with new and built projects. Exclusive mixed-use development MontAzure Phuket launched Singapore – MontAzure, an exclusive mixed-use community project in Kamala, Phuket, was recently launched at the Singapore Yacht Show 2016, unveiling an elite project occupying one of the last truly sizable plots of land on the island that stretches from the mountainside to an extensive beachfront site. MontAzure is a joint venture of three of the most prestigious property and hotel investment groups in Asia – ARCH Capital Management (Hong Kong & Shanghai), The Narai Group (Thailand), and Philean Capital (Singapore) part of Pontiac Land Group – which have teamed up to launch Asia’s most exceptional resort residential development. Atkins to create TOD masterplans for Indonesia’s first HSR corridor Hong Kong – Atkins has been awarded the design contract to provide transit oriented development (TOD) masterplan along the new Jakarta-Bandung high speed rail corridor, Indonesia’s first high speed rail project. Ecobuild Southeast Asia 2016 concludes with a great response Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Ecobuild Southeast Asia 2016 and International Construction Week 2016 (ICW2016), one of the region’s biggest trade events for the construction industry, was launched on 12 April 2016 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre by Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Bin Haji Yusof, Minister of Works Malaysia, on behalf of Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak. Held under the theme “Driving Productivity in Construction” and organised by UBM Malaysia, Ecobuild SEA 2016 focused the spotlight on cutting-edge technologies and methodologies, to improve productivity and sustainability in construction, particularly Industrialised Building System (IBS), as showcased in the Industrialised Building Systems Housing Expo. “The theme of this year’s show is driving productivity further by increasing technology adoption and modernising construction methods,” said Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak. “This is an important aspect of our national economy, for it is through increased productivity that we can properly target becoming a high-income nation by 2020.” Co-located with Ecobuild SEA are the IBS Housing Expo and the CIDB-IEM Construction Career Fair 2016, all under one roof. IBS showcases quality, safe and energy-efficient methods of construction, and will help to modernise the local building industry. The Construction Career Fair is the only career fair for the professionals in the industry, also providing job opportunities to fresh graduates. As a leading platform for the construction industry in Southeast Asia, Ecobuild SEA consists of 127 exhibitors from eight countries and regions. The participating countries are Malaysia, Singapore, China, Canada, Hong Kong, Germany, France and Australia. The show had successfully drawn 12,073 visitors from 63 countries, a 15 percent increase from 2015. About 10.3 percent of the visitors are international. There were a total of 66 paid conferences, forums, free seminars and technology symposiums, as well as five competitions alongside Ecobuild SEA. Several competitions had their finale during ICW 2016: My City 2050, Rebuild It Green, Open Ideas Competition, International Highest Early Strength Self-Consolidating Concrete Cube Competition and IEM Mechanical Design Competition. The next edition, Ecobuild SEA 2017, will be held on 12-14 April 2017 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The theme will be “Quality, Safety and Professionalism”, which is one of the four strategic thrusts of the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP). It will co-located with Greenbuild 2017, Energy Efficiency Malaysia, Construction Showcase and Construction Career Fair, including International Pavilion, Industrialised Building System Pavilion, Malaysia Timber Industry Board (MTIB) Pavilion and Contractor and Entrepreneur Development Division (BPKU) Pavilion. Russell A. Davidson, FAIA, inaugurated as 2016 AIA President Washington, D.C., USA – Russell A. Davidson, FAIA, Managing Principal & President of KG&D Architects in Mount Kisco, N.Y. was inaugurated as the 92nd President of the AIA at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. He succeeds the 91st President, Elizabeth Chu Richter, FAIA, in representing nearly 88,000 AIA members. Davidson has held a multitude of elected positions within the AIA including serving as president of AIA Westchester + Hudson Valley in 1999 and president of AIA New York State in 2007. He joined the AIA National Board in 2009 and served as AIA vice president from 2012-2013. Throughout his national leadership tenure, Davidson has maintained a special focus on government and public advocacy for architects and architecture. “Now is the time to move from good to great and to fully realise the potential of one of our country’s oldest professional associations,” said Davidson at his inauguration. “In an election year we will leverage the attention paid to the future of America to point out that architects, along with our partners in the design and construction industry, not only designed the places that define American cities, towns and villages but also are the leading edge of a major economic force,” he added. SWA creates dynamic oasis in Chengdu, China Laguna Beach, California, USA – SWA announces the landscape design for the new Performing Arts and Entertainment Center, located in the heart of Chengdu, the largest city in southwest China. Slated to open in 2016, the Performing Arts Center is a one-million-square-metre mixeduse retail, residential, office, and civic theatre complex designed to become the city’s culture and entertainment hub. The vision for this largescale urban development owned by the city government is to create a new landmark and destination at the centre of Chengdu. Its landscape design is inspired by the spiral form of the Performing Arts Center, an overlapping spiral and circular motif that runs throughout the entire site. Extending the lines outward from the building and into the landscape, a galaxy of circles forms the framework for gathering spaces, sunken gardens, plazas, play areas and fountains. Five main plaza and garden zones become the project’s living cores, presenting a dynamic, youthful, and energetic image of the city’s new landmark. Goettsch Partners and Lead 8 win design competition for Financial Street Shanghai Railway Station mixed-use development Chicago, Illinois, USA – Chicago-based architecture firm Goettsch Partners and Hong Kong-based multidisciplinar y architecture and design studio Lead 8 have won the design competition for a new 264,000-square -metre multi-building mixed-use complex in Shanghai. The projec t is being developed by Financial Street Holding Co. Ltd., a leading commercial real estate developer based in Beijing, and will be located on two parcels just north of the Shanghai Railway Station. The project’s primary western parcel features five main buildings, including 131,000 square metres of office space catering to a variety of tenants, 54,000 square metres of retail, 22,000 square metres of loft apar tment space, and a 5,000-square -metre cultural centre. The eastern parcel includes a 15,000-square -metre headquar ters office building and a complex with 45,000 square metres of loft apartment space above a 15,000-square-metre retail podium. The project vision is to create a thriving district centre – an urban destination that serves as a highly visible landmark with architecture, landscape and cultural elements fully integrated in order to enhance connectivity and define a true sense of place for the emerging district. Located adjacent to a major railway interchange, the development will

also serve as an “attractor,” drawing p e o p l e i nto t h e d i s t r i c t f ro m t h e city and other transportation hubs. Projects in nine cities receive National Urban Design Awards Ottawa, Canada – Nine cities across Canada “have been enriched by the addition of remarkable urban design initiatives,” said the jury of the 2016 National Urban Design Awards. The nine cities are Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Saskatoon, and Vancouver. “The quality of the submissions this year was impressive,” said the three-member jury. “These unique solutions displayed a refreshing inventiveness and a strong commitment to the overarching objective of urban design to respond to and enhance the immediate surroundings and wider community.” The winning projects range from urban infill to renewed public spaces and playful installations. The awards are part of a two-tier programme held in cooperation with Canadian municipalities. The National Urban Design Awards program judged winners of the 2015 municipal awards and entries submitted at large. Head office of Geelen Counterflow in Haelen cited as the most sustainable office in the world Haelen, The Netherlands – The new head office of dryer and cooler manufacturer Geelen Counterflow in Haelen, The Netherlands, has been cited as the most sustainable office in the world, receiving a 99.94 percent score in the BREEAM certification system. The building for 50 office employees generates 50 percent more solar energy than it needs for heating, air-conditioning, lighting and computers. The extra energy is used in the factory for laser cutting of stainless steel and recharging of electric forklift trucks. Where possible, the building materials are “Cradle to Cradle” certified, which means that they do no harm to the environment and that they can be re-used at the end of their lifetime. The building is constructed out of wood, which is considered to have the lowest CO2 footprint of any construction material. Conran and Partners completes 20 hectare urban regeneration project London, UK – Won in limited competition against a list of international architects including Cesar Pelli, KPF and Kengo Kuma, Conran and Partners has led this significant project, Tokyo’s single largest development in the last 10 years, as both Design Architect and Design Supervisor since 2004. The scheme, located on the south-west edge of the city alongside the Tama River, comprises a total of 400,000 square metres of retail, office, leisure and residential building, as well as a new city park. The first phase of the project, launched in March 2011, was made up of 260,000 square metres of mixed use development including two department stores, a retail galleria, an office building, three residential towers ranging from 28 to 40 storeys, as well as two low rise residential buildings, providing a total of 1,000 apartments. The recently completed final phase of construction creates an additional 140,000 square metres of development including retail, a cinema complex, TV studio and leisure uses, surrounding a 30-storey office building surmounted by a three-storey hotel. Conran and Partners’ design concept for the project responds to the essential elements of the site: its location on the very edge of Tokyo, its adjacency to the Tamagawa River and the shift across its one kilometre length, from the urbanity of the railway station to the west, to the park to the east. As such, the scheme reflects the site’s important transitionary role at the threshold between city and nature in this popular, family orientated neighbourhood. A unifying landscaped plateau has been created across the whole site through which a ribbon element defines the journey: a promenade celebrating this transitional route. The individual building designs respond to their specific location along the route, with a bolder use of colour adjacent to the

railway station, becoming lighter and more delicate in detail towards the park. The scheme’s references to nature are expressed as stone strata, both as eroding planes within the base plateau and in the stepping form of the low rise buildings. The project is the first in Japan to achieve LEED ND Gold Standard (PreCertified Plan) – equivalent to the UK BREEAM ‘Excellent’.

MVRDV transforms Hong Kong factory into glass office

Rotterdam, The Netherlands – MVRDV has opened the 133 Wai Yip Street in Hong Kong. An office transformation, with retail and restaurants, which strips an old industrial building down to its bare bones and uses only glass with stainless steel infill to build up the interior spaces. The 18,000 square metres project, located on the Kwun Tong waterfront is part of a larger urban development scheme which aims to turn the post-industrial district of East Kowloon into Hong Kong’s new central business district (named CBD2). An entirely see-through office stands as an example to the goals of the project to give ultimate transparency within the workplace. The project was commissioned in 2013 by project developer GAW Capital and now stands as one of the flagship projects for the new business development, becoming the bridge between the neighbourhood’s industrial roots and it’s metropolitan future. With floor area at a premium in Hong Kong MVRDV aimed to create an office space which offered maximum attractiveness and perceived spaciousness in order to provide as pleasant working environment as possible. The building is stripped down to its
beautifully raw and butch primary structure, with all unnecessary trimmings being taken out. Infill was only then added to the building in the form of white paint, glass and stainless steel in order to maintain and highlight the purity of the bare structure. Old and new are easily distinguished, whilst the inner workings of the building are on display for all to see. But how to create an office environment that also brings with it the purity and simplicity of the building design? The answer, glass tables, shelves, floors, speakers, computers, walls – an entirely glass office, free from visible clutter. The model office stands as an example for tenants to install in their work spaces if they desire. “We are moving into a transparent society, businesses are becoming more open with the public, and people care more about what goes on behind closed doors. In that way, a clear workspace leaves nothing questionable, nothing hidden; it generates trust.” Tells MVRDV co-founder Winy Maas, “But also it is an opportunity for the building to become a reminder of the industrial history of the neighbourhood, monumentalized in a casing of glass.”
Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects win international design competition for Sino-US cooperation Wenzhou-Kean University Student Centre & Library, China Aarhus, Denmark – Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects has been awarded first prize in an international competition to design the 25,000 square metres Student Centre & Library for the Wenzhou-Kean University in Wenzhou, China. Set on 500 acres in a rural mountainous region, the university will provide learning and living space for 8,500 students. The new building is located at the heart of the university and designed to embrace interaction and diversity, creating opportunities for new ways of learning in an informal environment and will become the central hub for student activities within the campus.

Established in 2006, the WenzhouKean University is cooperatively run by Wenzhou University and Kean University, New Jersey, USA. The university aims to merge Chinese and American teaching methodologies in practice from a global context. The winning proposal of the new Student Centre & Library is designed to embrace diversity, interaction and knowledge sharing. The new building connects the educational faculties in the south and student residence in the north. Set against a beautiful backdrop of mountains, the exterior of the Student Centre & Library appears as four rectangular shapes placed on top of one another. The building is wrapped in semitransparent glass covered in an abstract Image by B&TB fritted pattern. The facade is inspired by Wenzhou’s mountainous terrain, and vernacular bamboo construction common in the city’s historical architecture. Located at the ground and first level, the student activity centre is designed as a central marketplace. Accessible from all sides, the activity centre will provide spaces for a cafe, theatre, dance and music studios, exhibition space, sports and games, and spaces for informal meeting and gathering. Stairs and bridges in the atrium connects the upper levels, where a grand “book stack” in the light-filled atrium leads up to the library and study spaces on the third to ninth floor. The library will house 30,000 books, a 300 seat lecture hall, and various space for study and research. Reading spaces are organised around the central book stack, leading to a grand reading room on the top level.

BCA Awards 2016 winners unveiled Singapore – This year’s BCA Awards saw a record number of 424 awards given out to industry players and stakeholders who demonstrated outstanding performance in the areas of built environment, safety, quality, sustainability, productivity and universal design. The award ceremony was held at Resorts World Sentosa on 26 May 2016. Guest-of-honour and Minister for National Development, Mr Lawrence Wong praised the achievements of the built environment industry in Singapore and unveiled new initiatives to encourage building owners to go green. Over 2,000 guests comprising of developers, contractors, engineers, and architects, attended the event.
St ro n g e r d r i ve to g re e n b u i l d i n g s i n Singapore Minimum Environmental Sustainability Standards for Existing Buildings With the national target to green at least 80 percent of Singapore’s building stock by 2030, a phased approach was adopted to require existing buildings to meet minimum sustainability standard when they are retrofitted. The initial phase took effect from January 2014, targeting commercial buildings with Gross Floor Area (GFA) of 15,000 square metres or more. The next phase, which will take effect in early 2017, requires medium-sized buildings, with GFA greater than 5,000 square metres, to meet minimum standards equivalent to the BCA Green Mark Certified level when they undergo retrofitting to install or replace the cooling system within their building.

More help for building owners to green their buildings Enhancement to $50 million Green Mark Incentive Scheme for Existing Buildings and Premises The $50 million Green Mark Incentive Scheme for Existing Buildings (GMIS-EBP), which was introduced BCA Chairman Mr Lee Fook Sun giving his welcome address at the BCA Awards in September 2014, will be enhanced to provide 2016 ceremony. Photo credit: Building and Construction Authority of Singapore stronger support for building owners and tenants to jointly undertake energy improvement works within their buildings. Building owners with at least 10 percent of tenants that are Small & Medium Enterprises 1 (SMEs), will be eligible to tap on the scheme, which provides a cash incentive amounting to up to 50 percent of the cost incurred solely for the purchase and installation of energy efficient equipment within the building. Besides relieving the high capital cost of replacing the air-conditioning system, the scheme will also cover the cost of building optimisation to help improve energy efficiency. This scheme is also applicable to office and retail buildings in Business Parks, as well as Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) and religious organisations. The new enhancement to the GMIS-EBP (Building owner) will apply to applications received on or after 30 June 2016. Extension of Building Retrofit Energy Efficiency Financing Scheme Another scheme that helps building owners secure upfront capital to enhance their building’s energy efficiency is the Building Retrofit Energy Efficiency Financing (BREEF) scheme which was introduced in 2011. Under the scheme, BCA partners selected Financial Institution (FIs) in Singapore to facilitate loans to building owners, with BCA sharing the risk of any loan default with the participating FIs. The scheme has been extended by two more years, till end March 2018. New SGBC-BCA Zero Capital Partnership Scheme A new initiative that BCA is rolling out in partnership with the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC), is the SGBC-BCA Zero Capital Partnership Scheme (ZCPS), aimed at helping building owners carry out building retrofits. Building owners who require capital

and technical assistance in building retrofits can now find support from Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) firms accredited by SGBC. These EPC firms will conduct energy audits and propose the necessary retrofits as well as provide financing, and/or facilitate the application of suitable financing and incentive schemes for building owners.
BCA Green Mark Champions and First Platinum STAR Champion The inaugural BCA Green Mark Platinum STAR Champion award conferred to the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). This new award category was introduced in recognition of outstanding developers and building owners who have 50 or more building projects that have achieved the highest BCA Green Mark Platinum rating. To date, NTU has 51 Green Mark Platinum new and existing buildings in its campus grounds which are projected to generate an estimated 39,000 MWh of energy savings annually. This amount of energy saved is equivalent to the amount used to power up over 8,000 HDB 4-room flats for a year. This year, NTU won 37 BCA Green Mark Platinum awards. Amongst the winning projects are the Clinical Sciences Building located at the Novena Campus and the upcoming Academic Building North. “The built environment sector has been working closely with us and is becoming increasingly conscious of their impact on the environment. Over the years, we are heartened to see more firms picking up pace in their green building journey. We hope that the new BCA Green Mark Platinum STAR Champion Award will encourage developers and building owners to play a more active role and stay committed in the fight against climate change,” said Mr Neo Choon Keong, Acting Deputy CEO for Industry Development, BCA. Given the increasing awareness and popularity of the BCA Green Mark within the industry, BCA gave out 304 Green Mark awards this year – the highest thus far – including four Green Mark Champions awards conferred to Genting Singapore PLC, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and National Parks Board.

Hakusui Nursery
– A nursery school with a large house
D
esigned by Yamazaki Kentaro Design Workshop, the Hakusui Nursery school in Sakura, Chiba was planned to accommodate 60 pupils. Seiyu-Kai, a local social welfare firm specialising in elderly care facilities approached Yamazaki Kentaro Design Workshop for this project. The overarching concept for this plan started with an idea: “a nursery school is a large house.” Surrounded by mountains and forest, the southern area of the site rests on a gentle slope. Putting this topography to use, we designed the school room to resemble a large set of stairs. One unique feature of this “large house,” for example, is that a 3-year old child is in the same room as a 5-year old and these children of different ages can interact in the wide, oneroom space. Additionally, should a 3 year-old child be sleeping while a 5 year old child plays nearby, these differences in rhythm reinforce the “domestic” qualities of this “large house”.

Keeping in line with Seiyu-kai’s longstanding (26-year) philosophy, Yamazaki Kentaro made it a priority to minimise the number of blind-spots within the room in order to keep safety measures as unintrusive as possible. Utilising large sliding window frames along the northern and southern faces, along with the space created by the slope, ventilation is created as a breeze draws in from the south of the structure, passes through the forest-like interior pillars making its way upwards before finally blowing out across the terrace on the northern side. A small pond on the southern end which gathers rainwater as well as water from sprinklers installed on the southward-slanted roof also contributes to the airflow as the water is absorbed into the wind that blows into the structure.

This was part of a comprehensive plan to create a space that was inseparable from the environment that surrounds it. The architect believed that in pursuing the original concept of a “nursery school as a large house”, they could achieve something not unlike the houses in farming communities that surround it. Yamazaki Kentaro’s goal was to create a space that was not only fun for the children but via blending into the nature around it, foster an experience that was greater than the sum of its elements.

Singapore University of Technology & Design
– In a class of its own
Mapei takes great pride in supplying wall coating products for the new public university in Singapore, SUTD.
S
ingapore’s fourth public university, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), is one of the first universities in the world to have incorporated the art and science of design and technology in a multidisciplinary curriculum. SUTD first opened its doors in April 2012. Its collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) aimed to develop educational curriculum and spur SUTD’s research enterprise. In January 2015, SUTD moved to its permanent campus at Upper Changi, located in the eastern part of Singapore. On 9th May 2015, SUTD was officially opened with a pompous ceremony. Guests of honour included Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong, Emeritus Senior Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong and international celebrity Mr Jackie Chan. The 15.8-hectares campus was built at a cost of S$470 million. SUTD appointed DP Architects Pte Ltd, in collaboration with UNStudio from Amsterdam, to design the new campus. The new campus was designed to foster collaboration, invention and 46

creativity by integrating academic, housing and recreational facilities to facilitate interaction among faculty students and staff. The project has achieved the Platinum Green Mark rating from Building Construction Authority (BCA) in Singapore for energy saving features that were incorporated in the building. The architecture of the academic buildings were encased in fluid lines and aerodynamic curves, giving it a futuristic appeal. Sky bridges are spread throughout the campus connecting buildings. From the top, the academic blocks look like a geometric variation of the number “8”, whereas the other building resembles a boomerang. These blocks house lecture theatres, research centres, classrooms, library and an auditorium. The three linear residential blocks are connected together by a living spine which houses communal facilities such as lounge, cafe, multi-purpose hall, etc. Adjoining the residential blocks are sports facilities that include a swimming pool, running track, football field and tennis court. The campus has an interesting Chinese heritage structure, an ancient pavilion some 370 years old from China’s southern Anhui province. It is donated by international celebrity, Jackie Chan.
Mapei Solutions For this project, the architect specified Mineral silicate paint for the external structures of the academic buildings. Various shades of green, red and lilac SILEXCOLOR and SILANCOLOR systems were selected by the designers for providing a protective and decorative coating for the external walls of the academic buildings, while SILANCOLOR AC PAINT and SILANCOLOR PRIMER were used for finishing the surfaces of the two bridges of the campus.

Mulan School and Educational Landscape in Huaiji
I
nfrastructure has been a major driver of growth across China. Highways and high speed rail links proliferate enabling the vast movement of goods and raw materials to sites of production and consumption. These conduits have also facilitated mass labour migration from rural villages to factories. Although connecting many isolated areas initiating urbanisation and investment opportunities, in some instances the impact of infrastructure can have detrimental local effects: farmland is bisected; villages divided; and the environment can become degraded through altered water courses and slope erosion. In Mulan Village, Huaiji, Guangdong Province, the construction of the high speed rail created a huge incision into the landscape and a repository of earth at the back of an existing primary school. This slope was unstable and also led to flood damage of the old courtyard building. This school was designated for expansion and our commission was to design an educational landscape involving the creation of a new school block, a toilet and a playground. The strategy of architects John Lin and Joshua Bolchover, along with Landscape Architect Dorothy Tang from the University of Hong Kong, was to organise the site as a series of sequential open spaces, linking the courtyards between the existing school, the new building and the playground. The loose earth of the slope

was re-contoured and retained through the creation of a reed-bed filtration system and toilet that edged the basketball court. The reed-bed channels bifurcate and split apart to create small discovery gardens and play spaces. The roof of the new building is a continuous ribbon that rises from the ground as a series of steps forming a new public space and outdoor classroom. The steps are punctuated with small micro-courtyards that continue into the library. The roof is clad in old, recycled tiles collected from numerous villages in the local area. At three moments the roof tiles become vertical walls and help direct run-off water to the ground. A perforated screen walI encourages climbing plants that then cool the air in the hot summer months. Smooth, mirror-tiles are deployed on the courtyard faรงade and on the vertical faces of the steps. This creates visual mirages and distorted reflections that animate as children play in the courtyard and steps. As the urbanisation of Huaiji begins to expand and encroach on the village, through the provision of these common, shared areas, the school can become a community focal point and active site for discussions, meetings, study, play or relaxation.

FPT UNIVERSITY â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A tree-covered university campus for HCM City
C
ities, especially in thriving countries like Vietnam, are growing at such speed that infrastructure is unable to keep pace; environmental stress is observable through frequent energy shortages, increased pollution, rising temperatures, and reduced greenery. Ho Chi Minh City illustrates these issues, having only 0.25 percent of the entire city covered in greenery. This sprawling metropolis has a primarily flat landscape that is dominated by vertical straight buildings. To engage the city in a different way, FPT University will appear as an undulating forested mountain that grows out of the city of concrete and brick. This form creates more greenery than is destroyed, counteracting environmental stress and providing the city with a new icon for sustainability. To accommodate the high flow of 5,000 students at one time within a limited plot, ample green space is dedicated to circulation and gathering. On the ground floor, a large courtyard contains high trees, a pond, and plentiful space for lectures, events, exchange, or having lunch. From here, a semi-outdoor garden carves through the building and connects each function with

greenery. This path continues onto the roof, covering it with vegetation and creating more opportunity to gather and observe the lush scenery. Additionally, the building facade is covered by trees that cleanse the air and reduce energy consumption by producing shade. The combination of green devices creates a connection to nature that can be felt anywhere in the building. FPT University has been designed towards a harmony between humans and nature. The building will aid the recovery of greenery that once flourished in this land and foster a new generation of thinkers.

O
fficially opened in mid-2014, Duke Kunshan University is a state-of-the-art campus located in Kunshan, China. It is claimed to be the first Chinese university campus to be certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) campus programme, with all five campus buildings certified according to LEED standards by the US Green Building Council. The LEED gold certificate was recently awarded to its Academic Building and Conference Centre, while the Student Residence, Faculty Residence and Service Building received LEED silver certification. Faithful+Gould was brought on board as the building sustainability consultants to help the university realise its green aspirations. The company worked with the client and project team to develop and integrate green solutions into the planning, design, construction and operation of the campus buildings to reduce environmental impact at every stage of their life cycle.
Moreover, Faithful+Gould provided third-party testing and commissioning services on the campus systems and equipment including the HVAC, BMS, plumbing, firefighting, electrical, and extra-low voltage systems to ensure the buildings are handed over to operate safely, and are energy efficient, climateresponsive and in accordance to the university’s stringent design requirements. Some key features of the university’s green initiatives include: The absorbent “sponge campus” The 67,790 square metres campus is distinguished by its extensive use of aquatic elements, making the site an absorbent “sponge campus”, where almost every rain drop is absorbed, stored, permeated, purified and reused. Duke Kunshan’s ecological systems comprise four major parts: a naturally designed waterscape for rainwater collection and storm control, rainwater gardens to enhance on site permeability, an underground filtration system for water quality assurance, and an irrigation system that fully uses purified rainwater. All campus lawns are irrigated with rainwater, saving Duke Kunshan about 2,600 gallons of water each day, and eliminating potable water use for landscaping. Human-centred design for better living Classrooms are equipped with air filtration and carbon dioxide monitoring systems that automatically pump in fresh air, with 32 percent of the campus area covered by oxygen-generating native plants. Smoking is not allowed in all indoor areas, and low volatile organic compound (VOC) materials are used throughout the site. Campus bus lines provide transportation between the university and points of interest in Kunshan, and bicycle stations are put up to encourage cycling amongst students and staff as a way to stay fit and reduce carbon footprints. Buildings equipped with energy-saving technologies Daylight strategies, such as ceiling-to-floor glass curtain walls in the Academic Building, Conference Centre and several other buildings, help make the most out of natural lighting and reduce the need for electric lighting significantly. To further improve energy efficiency, dimmers are available in busy areas like classrooms and fitness centre to allow users to control lighting levels according to their needs and preferences. In addition, high-efficiency water-saving fixtures installed throughout the campus reduces water usage by 38 percent, and 675 square metres of rooftop solar thermal collectors are used to power the entire university’s water heating system. This amounts to 470,000 kWh of renewable energy generated per year.

Knowledge International Arabic School T
he Knowledge International Arabic School, is located at Shiroor, 14kms south of the nearest town Bhatkal, in the state of Karnataka, India. The project was commissioned by the mid-2014 and has begun phase 1 construction, which includes the Girls block and the Mosque. The whole campus set in about four acres of land houses, the main administration block which includes a state of the art mini theatre on the ground level and international standard swimming pool in its basement, the academic blocks divided into three, preliminary school, boys school, and girls’ school, a common mosque/prayer hall and all other common amenities for the campus. The main design criteria was to look into and study the daily activities of the kids, the movement pattern within a school and the required functional spaces that are missing in most schools which could enhance the educational input provided apart, from those in classrooms. The idea was to provide spaces that each children would love to be in, rather than to be forced to be in. The whole approach is rather radical and opposes the strict and controlled atmosphere that is generally adopted in Indian classrooms. The design is evolved around the core concepts of having the classrooms facing inwards, with a network of

passages, courtyards, large openings, and crude but colourful finishes for the structure creating a visually and psychologically appealing spaces. Each courtyard, is covered by pergolas that create a play of shadows on its stone flooring and plaster walls only to be amplified further by the landscaping and trees. Even though ambitious in efforts, the architects wanted to try merging nature into the educational spaces, with vast landscape proposals that are to take place side by side with the construction. Rural Engineering Building designed for students’ business success ThomsonAdsett has designed a new Engineering Building for Charles Sturt University, with views of Bathurst’s iconic Mount Panorama race circuit.
L
ocated in Bathurst, New South Wales in Australia, the building accommodates the regional university’s unique new degree, which is designed to leave students equipped with both engineering and business skills. ThomsonAdsett’s design meets both needs, by providing a pitching space for business activity and maker studio, which embraces the ‘Maker Movement’ – a trend where discarded or broken goods are reimagined and marketed. The building’s spatial diversity supports entrepreneurial thinking and the development of high-calibre engineers for employers. ThomsonAdsett developed a ‘Honeycomb of Learning’ – a spatial planning strategy which adds cohesion to the entire building. These clustered collaboration zones express the co-curricular and collaborative nature of the new learning cohort. The existing facility has been transformed with a gallery, technological wall, Honeycomb of Learning, maker studio, pitch space and labs, which encourage experimentation, partnerships and enterprise. These spaces enable students to develop necessary skills and relationships, before undertaking the field study component of the innovative course. ThomsonAdsett has created a character and sense of home for this new community, by using materials akin with regional farm and shed buildings. The form and re-use of the existing frames symbolises home, complements the rural shed aesthetic and maximises the use of embodied energy. This unique project illustrates the benefits of designing a curriculum and associated learning environment in parallel. Students and staff are already loving their new engineering home.

he building “Carmen Martin Gaite” is the first one of the Getafe Campus extension of the Madrid Carlos III University. The arrangement of the architect, Estudio Beldarrain and winner of the urban planning contest, lays the buildings on both sides of a linear park that organises the pedestrian traffic of the campus. This first building settles the front of Madrid Street, connecting itself by means of a walkway to the building already standing on the plot and making it possible to cross the building in its central part through a big foyer that connects the new park with the rest of the campus. Two storeys are organised on each side of this foyer, the Humanities library on one side and the lecture rooms on the side that is closer to the pre-existing lecture hall building. Over these, the departmental zone is organised on one storey. The building design is sustained on the architect’s engagement with innovation and sustainability, as well as on their conviction that these two go hand in hand. On the one hand, as opposed to an educational architecture that is traditionally rigid, systematic
and repetitive, Estudio Beldarrain take sides for a flexible, diverse and humanized architecture. An architecture tending less to be a reflection of the institution’s authority and more attentive to provide services to teachers and students, creating spaces for diverse encounters where a great number of new models of learning and research can be accommodated.

On the other hand, the whole building responds to the growing commitment of all the parties towards the environmental sustainability. During the project and construction phases, countless sustainability measures have been incorporated, with the result that a degree of excellence has been achieved that had not been reached in Spain until now by an educational centre. It will be the first one of its kind to obtain a LEED Certificate and it will be in the highest grade: PLATINE LEED. The process of conceiving the building has constituted a deliberate pendular movement between the confidence in the system and the repetition, on the one hand, and the search for exception and diversity on the other hand. System and repetition, on their own, provide a reassuring coherence and an economy of means, at the same time as they offer an intense flexibility. On the other hand, exception and diversity humanize architecture and make the user free to choose among multiple possibilities of use, which awards him a leading role. Thus, the bays repeat a well-studied modulation that solves with efficacy the division into big or small lecture rooms and offices. However, these bays bend or twist looking for visual effects, adapting themselves to the surrounding spaces and enhancing the communication spaces. The structure is systematically translated to the faรงade so as to provide flexibility to the bays. Concrete pillars are placed at a distance of 2.20 metres from each other and the 11.40 span is solved by means of post-tensioned slabs, Nevertheless, the pillars disappear behind the folds of the ventilated ceramic faรงade, to the point that in some places, such as in the principal access, the plates seem to float weightless. The faรงade, extraordinarily systematic, repeats the same plates, ceramic pieces and windows throughout all the building. However, the windows are scattered in an apparently disorderly manner solving with efficacy the illumination of the different uses and enhancing the desire to show the diversity proposed by the design. The extensive use of few materials in all the building is explored up to their last possibilities, requiring qualities that will allow them to respond in an attractive and effective manner to very different situations. 64

Marc Chagall
– An iconic new French school in Tel Aviv Designed by Paritzki & Liani Architects, Marc Chagall is a new French school in Tel Aviv.
T
he new French school “Marc Chagall”, located in the neighbourhood of Neve Tzedek in Tel Aviv is composed of two volumes.1 The main volume has been built around a patio of elders, an open court onto which the classrooms and the “suspended” stairs front. Around this petit-jardin, which is the eccentric focus of the paths of the building, two stairways grow on the sides creating a double staircase, which ends at the upper floor in a new open space, a meeting point for the students. Anyway, the main feature of these stairs is to follow the path in a double and asymmetric way, both internally from the flight of stairs that fronts onto the patio, and from the main garden of the school. This direct path, which leads from the exterior to the first floor is one of the main elements of the façade, which is oriented towards the old building and makes the visitor look at the sky. The second volume is a wide classroom next to the main volume. “The façades of Marc Chagall School smile”, – with these few simple words a young student described our idea to build a unusual shell around the building. Every façade gives the child a different view of the building, also with a homage to the masterpieces of Chagall. Like in a dream, where different plots mix and support each other, the figures of Over the Town (1914) appear on the façade in front of Shluss street. The image changes according to the viewing angle, if someone gets closer, its traits change.
1 In the project of the French School “Marc Chagall” we followed the building logic of the school as a microcosm of the city. The classrooms were designed as micro-flats and the volumes are like small houses of a Mediterranean town, joined in their common spaces by passages, small squares and unexpected gardens. This open dynamic organization is a new consideration of the track of the written texts and projects of Team X’s open design, especially in the tailor-made approach where the focus of the project is the student on his process of exploration and knowledge the world.

30 optical panels of aluminum, of different measures and created for the painting thanks to the 3D pixel system, transform the colours of the image in many small shadows created by the peculiar shape of the panels’ surface, making the image almost a hologram. This creates an optical weave that changes according to the point of view of the observer or the different diffusion of artificial light during night. The façade underline the Chagall’s idea of the city passed by figures, animals and objects floating in the air against the laws of time and gravity. On the west façade there are the entrance from the patio, which leads to the classrooms, the deep passage of the stairway and a long line of windows, which receives sunlight from the west. On the long white wall there are some very thin glass panels with pure colours, not blended: light blue, orange, red, yellow, blue; flags of imaginary places that only children can see. These fragments of coloured lights are united to the floor through thin steel cables, which support climbing plants: the purple wisteria on the east façade and the jasmine on the west façade. They slowly rise from the ground towards the roof like in the tale of Jack and the beanstalk. Tales are a source of freedom, which the master Chagall was able to transmit with its works. The colours also continue on the floors of the wide classrooms, which face the surrounding green or the sea. The openings were thought to catch the most interesting parts of Tel Aviv’s skyline. The school presents different degrees of luminosity thanks to the double line of windows and the internal patio, which provide also natural ventilation.

Eldon West Building
– A new home for the School of Architecture at the University of Portsmouth
D
esigned by Penoyre & Prasad LLP, the new Eldon West building brings together the four schools of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries onto one site for the first time, providing a dynamic new identity for the faculty and a new home for the School of Architecture. The design competition brief was for replacement of a small building on the West side of the Eldon courtyard with a new flagship building to showcase the faculty within the university and city and to be a catalyst for multidisciplinary exchange across the four schools. Built progressively over 40 years on a heavily bombed area of central Portsmouth, the Eldon site suffered from poor site wide connectivity and many level changes. Buildings were designed with little consideration for those adjacent or for future expansion. In consultation with the faculty and planners, the architecture firm Penoyre & Prasad LLP, developed a masterplan for the most appropriate accommodation for the coming together of the schools and for future expansion.

In the shaded undercroft created by the vigorous stepping up of this brick form are the transparent public areas - a highly glazed new main entrance and exhibition space showcases faculty work and gives access and views to the café and newly landscaped courtyard. In contrast to the robust brick street edge that recalls something of the pre-war street fabric, the courtyard edge is softer: broadening to incorporate café and lecture theatre at lower levels, contouring back at upper floors to form terraces the architecture unifies the disparate buildings surrounding the courtyard. Aluminium rain screen cladding reflects light into the courtyard and provides large surfaces for visual projection. A dramatic, five-storey atrium links all floors and forms a key part of the assisted natural ventilation strategy of this low energy building. The main stair from ground to first provides easy access to the 200-seat lecture theatre, screening room and seminar rooms on first floor. The upper floors of open studios provide a flexible new home for the school of architecture connected to the other disciplines by open, generous circulation and social learning spaces to further foster creative collaboration across the disciplines. A simple, robust approach to thermal comfort, acoustics and fire (building is designed as one fire compartment) combined with long structural spans and raised access floors provides for long term adaptability and helps future proof against climate change. “This wonderful building is going to be a beating heart of creativity here in this glorious city,” said University Chancellor, broadcaster and comedienne Sandi Toksvig.

The Diamond
– Engineered for world-class education
T
he Diamond at The University of Sheffield was completed in September 2015 and it is the largest capital investment in teaching and learning ever undertaken by the University. It makes a major contribution to the University’s ambition to develop and expand its Faculty of Engineering with world-class facilities for students and academics. Designed by Twelve Architects*, the building is named The Diamond after its unique façade. It is a 19,500 square metres facility, housing specialist engineering laboratories, lecture theatres, large scale flexible teaching spaces, workshops, a learning resource centre, and integrated formal and informal study environments for up to 5,000 students. As well as providing a home for many of the University’s Engineering undergraduates, The Diamond provides a 24/7 facility for a range of other departments, promoting collaboration and cross-disciplinary working in an environment fit for 21st century research and practice. The brief called for a landmark building that would symbolise and support the client’s ambition of becoming the UK’s leading engineering university and doubling the size of the Faculty of Engineering by 2021. The brief required the scheme to optimise the site’s development potential in both the quantum and quality of space created. It sorts to integrate a complex mix of functions into a flexible and efficient layout that creates an inspiring and innovative learning and teaching environment.

From the outset of the initial budget estimate at concept stage the construction and project costs were managed through detailed design reviews and cost planning gateways to ensure that the costs remained within the budget. This was maintained through procurement and negotiation of the main contract into the post contract stages, where the construction works and project were both delivered within the client’s budget. The external appearance creates a distinctive presence for the Diamond. The anodised aluminium and triple glazed façade draws inspiration from the detailing of the surrounding historic buildings and in particular the stone tracery that frames the windows of the adjacent church. It also references a ‘cellular automaton’, a discrete model studied in the field of engineering and used by the University to describe how the microstructure of steel changes during processing. To reduce internal heat gain and solar glare the size of the windows on the south elevation are smaller than those on the north, and the external anodised diamond ‘lattice’ provides an element of solar shading. The design provides a public route at ground floor level which also accesses the first floor main central atrium, enabling people to view the ‘showcase’ engineering activities being undertaken. Within the naturally ventilated atrium, curved lightweight steel ‘pods’ house spaces for informal personal and group learning. The raking orange columns that support these are expressed at all levels within the building. Classrooms, laboratories, the learning resource centre and offices are arranged to the north and south of the atrium. These wings and the façade utilise a 1.8 metres planning grid to allow future adaptability. The wings are constructed using post-tensioned reinforced concrete to maximise spans, minimise floor depths and reduce the construction programme. Full height glazing maximises internal views to and from the teaching spaces.

Rooflights flood the interior with daylight and custom-designed glazed study tables within the first floor atrium allow the natural light to penetrate the ground and lower ground levels whilst also creating acoustic separation. A series of flexible teaching spaces & lecture theatres are located at the ground and lower ground floor level with a total capacity of 1500 spaces, with the largest lecture theatre seating 400 people. The introduction of the basement into the scheme significantly increased the potential area of the scheme and also enabled the basement to act as a ‘raft’ foundation which omitted the need for pile foundations. To enable the Faculty of Engineering to meet its growth it was critical The Diamond opened in September 2015. The project team worked closely with the university to both programme and monitor the development and delivery, resulting in The Diamond opening on time for the start of the academic year. With applications up by 25 percent for The Faculty of Engineering for the current academic year, the client team believes The Diamond has a key role to play in continuing to attract world class academics and the best students. The ethos of the building is to support work across the full spectrum of engineering, from fundamental science to professional KEY DATES practice. The Diamond plays an integral part in the university’s wider research programme and their partnership with industry through the RIBA Stages A – E: August 2011 - December 2012 establishment of The Advanced Manufacturing Research Park which has Planning Approval: December 2012 attracted companies such as Boeing and Rolls Royce and has become a Tender: Jan 2013 - April 2013 huge catalyst for regeneration in the Sheffield City Region. hen Melbourne’s Bond bar was repurchased, its new owners made the unconventional move of re-engaging the venue’s original designer, Fady Hachem, Principal of Hachem to overhaul his own acclaimed concept. The bar’s signature curves and classic glamour were retained, while furnishings and features were radically updated, and innovative technologies seamlessly integrated. Bond’s owners wanted its character to be modern, and made once again synonymous with luxury and exclusivity. Drawing guests out of themselves, to mingle with the ‘in’ crowd. Hachem worked to define the values, ideas and philosophy of the nightclub genre. Perhaps the most consistent theme being a means to escape from daily life, a fantasy and heightening of the senses. Bond is a sub-ground venue, built within an off-form concrete car-park. Its height, an internal series of support columns and concrete slab are fixed. Seating created within the grid of columns disguises their regularity. The curvature of the walls was made more undulating, with reflective surfaces giving a sense of fluidity and vastness. Fady Hachem and his studio enhanced the venue’s functionality – implementing additional bars, discrete VIP entryways, a Green Room, and trans-formative spaces that can be opened for events or isolated for private functions. Hachem worked with engineers and specialist manufacturers to develop customised furnishings.

Constraints such as the low ceiling and a fixed series of support columns were used to advantage. Bond is now exemplary of a compact venue that is nonetheless dynamic. In the conceptual phase of the project, the designers analysed not only the original venue but also the nightclub archetype. By creating a multi-functional space, Bond is now capable of catering to a wider variety of clientele. The venue can now cater to very high-end clients or to those wanting a one off rock star experience. The unique cocoon-like shape has created a new brand awareness, elevating Bond to a new wider range of client. The existing site was assessed for ESD opportunities. In its first renovation in over a decade, the fundamentals of Bond had stood the test of time. Bond’s longevity is possibly its biggest contribution to sustainability. The new design was effectively a re-purposing of the existing space. The inclusion of hard-wearing materials, quality insulation, LED lighting and efficient mechanical plant, add to the energy efficiency of the venue. Timber framing was demolished, de-nailed and re-used for framing of internal walls. Existing services were analysed and where possible re-used and/or re-located. The volume of air change required for a venue of this nature is considerable. Mechanical plant was re designed and upgraded to incorporate an energy efficient VAV system enabling operators to choose a fresh air only cycle to conserve energy use wherever possible. The external timber decking selected is manufactured from recycled plastic. It is fire and slip resistant. The new building operators were given a detailed brief, mechanical pre-sets and a building operational manual to assist with power saving regimes. Glass crushers have been installed for efficient bottle recycling. All internal metal cladding and leatherwork has been installed to enable removal for partial repair or reuse.

LVMH lifestyle and night life brand CÉ LA VI comes to Hong Kong
T
he world’s first of this LVMH lifestyle brand CÉ LA VI encompasses three levels of club lounge, restaurant and rooftop bar. Conceived around a unique blend of passion, intrigue and Southeast Asian flavour, the venue represents this brand’s inaugural venture in the heart of Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong. Designed by AB Concept, the 592-square-metres space is filled with natural materials such as lava stone, ship’s wood, rattan and nourished with live plants in the form of vertical gardens and green chandeliers. “We’re delighted to have been so instrumental in creating the design DNA for CÉ LA VI’s pioneering first venture,” said AB Concept’s co-founder Mr Ed Ng. “This was a really fun project,” he added. From the entrance on the 25th floor, the CÉ LA VI’s signature is translated into a hanging screen, both architectural and organic in profile, inspired by the stepping silhouette of Asian temple discs. The bold contrast of the sensual red eel-skin frames and raw lava stone surrounds create an interesting juxtaposition and tactile space. Nest marks the centre of this space, with a raised VIP seating area and a downlit DJ booth flanked by dancer platforms in black steel. The bar features an antique mirror backdrop with drop candles and a granite counter set off with perforated pony skin, which at night lights up to reveal a floral motif. The common washroom area features a spectacular ceiling-high green pillar surrounded by walnut veneer wood.

The soul of the restaurant truly lies in the custom-designed green chandeliers, a living object overflowing with a host of exotic plants. Wall sconces filled with greenery add to the rainforest concept, while tabletops mimic picture frames, each featuring exotic bird feathers recessed under the glass. The roof terrace delivers a stunning view of Hong Kong skyline. Lush landscaping embraces the entire rooftop space, creating an unworldly experience and urban sanctuary. The design focus is the jacuzzi – one of very few on a Hong Kong rooftop – a glamorous and playful centrepiece surrounded by flexible lounge seating and a raised private VIP area that doubles as a DJ booth. “We always believe that projects come alive when given a unique design narrative and with CÉ LA VI I think we’ve succeeded in showing how we take a space and use it to tell an incredible story,” said Mr Ng. “We wanted to create a space that was seductive, intense and passionate - a place that is worthy of representing this superbrand for LVMH and I think the finished result really speaks to that creative vision,” he concluded.

Drownings – Is Artificial Intelligence with Computer Vision the Answer?
I
n our busy pools, lifeguards are essential but they simply cannot be everywhere and see everything. Research shows a striking piece of information – Lifeguards on duty are only see people drowning within the recommended time period only 16 percent of the time. Lifeguards are essential for rescuing and helping control the pool environment, but they simply cannot be looking at all patrons 100 percent of the time with only one set of eyes. In almost all other areas of our lives we use computers to make a huge difference to our lives – and now the same can be said for helping a lifeguard rescue people quickly. Sadly, the vast majority of drowning cases are silent, with swimmers not struggling, but sinking rapidly to the bottom. They are not the splash and scream affairs that are portrayed in the movies. The result is that even the most vigilant, highly trained lifeguard has a very difficult time seeing someone drowning soon enough to rescue them in time. Like driverless cars, computer vision drowning detection technology uses a combination of many factors, including complex algorithms and artificial intelligence to determine when a person is drowning and alerting the lifeguard in time to make a quick rescue. The real challenge for this type of system is “to achieve the combination required – low false alarms, high performance rate, low detection time”, too many false alarms result in people simply ignoring the alarm, said Singapore pool industry veteran, ET Chan, who’s recently published book “A Guide to Swimming Pool Maintenance and Filtration Systems” is receiving critical international acclaim. Computer Vision for drowning Detection has already proved enormously beneficial around the world and has already resulted in over 30 lives saved. t the Basel Nord traffic junction, an abandoned industrial zone is getting a new lease on life. The Stücki shopping center bundles 6,000 square metres of modern office space, a hotel with 140 rooms, and a two-storey mall with about 35,000 square metres of retail space. It comprises two large-format façade greening concepts. One is an array of plant containers placed on each of the building’s levels to constitute a horizontal green surface. The other solution is a grid of criss-crossed wire ropes extending from the ground level via steel staircases to the roof edge. They support an additional, natural curtain façade. rooved mechanical piping has been changing the way contractors do business for more than 95 years, but this method of pipe joining is still unknown or misunderstood in some areas of the commercial building industry. Many other pipe joining methods exist for mechanical piping systems, particularly in HVAC and plumbing applications. What some contractors may not realize are the opportunities that grooved mechanical piping provides in terms of increased profits, compressed schedules and worksite safety. Compiled below is a list of key benefits of grooved mechanical systems that all contractors should be aware of when selecting a pipe joining method.
Grooved pipe joining technology explained Many of the benefits of the grooved coupling are inherent in the physical design of the product, which is why it is important to understand the grooved concept and the features of the product. A grooved pipe joint is comprised of four elements: the grooved pipe, the gasket, the coupling housing and the nuts and bolts. The groove is made by cold forming or machining a groove into the pipe ends. A gasket encompassed by the coupling housing forms a seal on the two pipe ends, and the key sections of the coupling housing engage the grooves. The bolts and nuts are tightened with a socket wrench or impact wrench. In the installed state, the coupling housing encases the gasket and engages the grooves around the circumference of the pipe to create a leak-tight seal in a self-restrained pipe joint. There are two basic coupling styles that can be used on grooved pipe: flexible and rigid.

There are a number of benefits to choosing grooved mechanical piping where applicable. Faster Pipe Joining – Standard grooved couplings install up to five times faster than welded joints and up to three times faster than flanged joints. Recent product enhancements by grooved coupling manufacturers have significantly increased installation times. Some couplings offer proprietary installation-ready joining technology that install in less than half the time of standard grooved couplings. Unlike standard couplings, installation-ready couplings are installed without the need to disassemble the coupling. No loose bolts and nuts translate to less material handling on site. Unlike welding, brazing or soldering, grooved mechanical pipe joints do not require a flame or fire watch, and as a result, assembling

and disassembling of a pipe joint is much faster and easier. Pipe fitters install grooved mechanical pipe joints properly and accurately with minimal training and no additional safety measures. Ease and Speed of Maintenance – The design of grooved systems allows for easier routine and scheduled maintenance because the grooved coupling provides a union at every joint, which permits easier access to the system compared to other joining methods. Removing a coupling is easy; the worker loosens the nuts and bolts and removes the coupling housings and gasket. Once maintenance is complete, the coupling can be reassembled on the grooved end of a pipe, valve, fitting or accessory. Because maintenance does not require torches, grooved systems do not have to be completely drained and dried to perform the maintenance, resulting in minimal system downtime.

Greater Design Flexibility – A grooved system not only offers a union at every joint which simplifies system access, but a grooved system offers 360 degrees of rotational movement during installation, reducing field mate-up issues by making it easier to perform adjustments on site. Reliability – The design of grooved couplings, which are secure and leak-tight, make them more reliable than other forms of pipe joining, such as flanges, which require more accurate alignment and specific bolt tightening patterns, increasing the risk of leaks. Couplings require no maintenance and are designed to last the life of the piping system. Welded joints, on the other hand, have to be X-rayed to ensure proper installation. Grooved mechanical piping systems can be pressurized and depressurized repeatedly for years without ever fatiguing the elastomer gasket. Economical – Labour time is the largest cost variable in the field, and grooved systems offer a reduction in total installed costs because they reduce labor time. It is estimated that jobs utilising welded joints demand up to 45 percent more man-hours on
Accommodation of Piping System Movement – Thermal transients may impose deflection on a piping system as the pipe grows when heated and contracts when cooled, resulting in stress on the piping system and equipment. Flexible grooved couplings minimize this stress by allowing limited deflection capabilities to accommodate this movement in system offsets or for use in expansion loops. As an added benefit, flexible couplings allow angular flexibility to accommodate piping misalignment and rotational movement for use in seismic swing joints.

Reduction of Noise and Vibration – Mechanical room equipment frequently creates noise and vibration which needs to be isolated from the piping system. Flexible mechanical systems allow the pipe to move within the grooved coupling and the elastomeric gasket dampens vibration, thereby localising the vibrations generated by equipment and reducing the amount of noise transmitted down the pipeline. performs this function without wearing out the gasket. Safer Jobsites – The safety advantages that grooved systems provide over welding are numerous. They require no volatile tanks or open torches. There are no lead lines to trip over, nor any need for fire watch personnel. And because there is no welding, soldering or brazing involved, there is no resulting exposure to hazardous fumes or the health issues with which they have been linked, such as lung cancer, urinary tract cancer, heart disease and Parkinson’s disease. Sustainability – Grooved piping technology’s inherent qualities naturally make it environmentally friendly. It significantly reduces or eliminates waste, emissions and noise pollution on the job site. Weld and x-ray machines are not required which reduces the draw on burdened power resources. The indoor and outdoor air quality is preserved because the joining method does not release fumes or particulate matter.

ORLDBEX 2016 was held at the World Trade Center Manila and the Philippine Trade Training Center from March 16-20, 2016. With the theme “Uniting Strong Foundations”, the five-day show attracted magnitude of architects, interior designers, contrac tors, developers and other industry professionals under one roof. Lumiqs® intelligent lighting systems are designed to provide light only when and where it is needed, and at only the minimum level of brightness required. When correctly configured, both of these factors can result in considerable cost savings. This is particularly true for locations that are frequently unoccupied. The Lumiqs® lighting systems feature an integrated PIR motion sensor to detect the presence of human beings, forklift trucks, etc. When movement is detected the LED light will immediately illuminate. Neighbour ing light units will simultaneously illuminate at a dimmed level to provide further convenience, comfort and safety. When no motion is detected, the lighting can be switched off completely, or set to remain on at a dimmed level, thus providing a comfortable level of constant illumination whilst still yielding significant energy savings. Almost 85 percent of Singapore’s population resides in public housing apartments built by the Singapore government. Maintenance management of these public housing estates is a mandatory function of town councils, chaired by elected members of parliament. This system is used by the town councils to track over 24,000 lifts, 2,500 water pumps and 24,000 CCTV cameras, monitor the closure of about 900,000 feedbacks yearly and managed the maintenance of public common amenities for 1,000,000 homes. The system detects faults and automatically alerts the emergency and maintenance response teams to any breakdown and then track the event until the fault is resolved. VINNAPAS® VAE DISPERSIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION APPLICATIONS

Modern vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer (VAE) dispersions are gaining growing importance in the construction sector. As an alternate technology to conventional binder systems based on acrylics or styrene butadiene, WACKER’s VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions offer interesting technical properties with a good cost/performance balance. In today’s Southeast Asian construction market, demand is growing for technologies that can combine good application performance and low environmental impact while at the same time offering good cost in use. As a result, the awareness of waterborne VAE dispersions as binders is increasing steadily.
Reliable barriers against water VINNAPAS® 536 ED is an ideal binder for two-component cementitious waterproofing membranes (2K cWPM) for creating seals in wet areas, such as kitchens, bathrooms or basement floors. The product offers good compatibility with cement and inorganic fillers and can also be blended with acrylic copolymers in the ratio of 30:70 or 50:50. An important criterion for 2k cWPM is the water impermeability test according to EN 14891. In lab experiments, a general formulation of 2K cWPM modified with VINNAPAS® 536 ED passed the test according to EN 14891 for a positive pressure of 1.5 bar for 7 days.

The dispersion VINNAPAS® 529 ED shows very good adhesion to hard substrates, with high cohesive and tensile strength. Thus, it can be ideally used in bonding agent and cement admixture in construction applications. In lab tests, general formulations with VINNAPAS® 529 ED passed the EN 1015-12 tensile adhesive strength test, as well as the ASTM C1042-99 test, a widely accepted industry standard in Southeast Asia to determine the bond strength of binders. Additionally, specific dispersions such as VINNAPAS® 538 ED can be used in ready-to-use wall putty. The waterborne dispersion can be formulated into pasty finished products to fill up joints and smooth surfaces. In formulations with a pigment volume concentration of 85 percent and 92 percent, the dispersion further exhibits ease of sandability, good adhesion strength and workability.
Conclusion In construction applications such as plasters, waterproofing membranes, or very generally in cement mixes, VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions reinforce the properties of the end product, such as adhesion and cohesion, improved flexibility and toughness, as well as good workability. Developed without the use of APEO-containing raw materials, specific low-emission and low-odour VINNAPAS® dispersions meet current and future demands of the construction market in Southeast Asia – both in terms of performance and environmental concerns. Silicone resin emulsion paints (SREP) have outstanding properties, including high water vapour permeability along with extremely low water uptake. They guarantee exceptionally high resistance against weathering, industrial emissions and micro-organisms. And, thanks to their exceptional durability, they are by far the most economical solution for long-term facade protection. All this is made possible by the use of WACKER’s SILRES® BS silicone resins.
Water is the natural enemy of every facade. If water penetrates into a facade from the exterior, modern mineral-based construction materials, due to their porous surface structure, absorb it like a sponge. This damp promotes the spread of algae, fungi and mold, and, in the worst of cases, even of rotting. UV rays and, most particularly, air pollution may also cause long-term damage. And that’s not all: there is danger from the interior, too, since the increasing use of thermal insulation materials promotes condensation. If the moisture cannot escape to the outside, this too can cause lasting damage. It is thus equally important for facade surfaces to permit the passage of water from inside to outside as to protect against the ingress of water from outside. For this reason, it is better to eliminate a facade’s natural enemies from the outset. The best solution is to use a hydrophobic, though breathable coating. Henkel adhesive solutions are already being applied to cutting-edge 3D printing construction projects such as ‘Europe Building’ in Amsterdam. The temporary conference centre, constructed ahead of the EU Presidency taking place the first six months of this year, was created as a collaborative effort between a group of forward-looking tech and design firms. Henkel contributed to the ecosystem in partnership with leading 3D print designers DUS Architects, providing the hotmelt adhesive formulation used to create the impressive front façade of the building. Hotmelt adhesives developed by Henkel are also being used as a disruptive new way of creating industrial prototypes for a variety of applications. From cutting down trees, through chemical processes to disposal – using paper towels has a significant impact on the environment. Most used paper towels cannot be recycled. They have to be disposed of. Used paper towels, packaging and bin liner end up in landfill or an incinerator. Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers produce up to 79 percent less CO2 than so some other hand dryers and up to 76 percent less than paper towels. Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers have a lower environmental impact across measures including carbon emissions and energy consumption. With a five year guarantee, the Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers are built to last. Even so, many components are designed to be recyclable with negligible environment impact. Dyson hand dryers are fast Testing based on NSF Protocol P335 proves that Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers are fast. Every second, up to 35 litres of air is forced through apertures up to 0.8mm wide. The result – 690 km/h sheets of air that scrapes water from hands, drying them quickly and hygienically. Low running costs Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers cost up to 69 percent less to run than other hand dryers, and up to 97 percent less than paper towels. 1 The problem with paper towels Paper towels are expensive, have a high impact on the environment and cause extra washroom maintenance through mess and blockages. Which means they’re energy hungry, expensive to run and unhygienic. Dry times can take up to 43 seconds, so many users give up before their hands are dry – risking increased spread of bacteria. Jet dryers might look like a Dyson Airblade™ hand dryer, but when it comes to performance there is no comparison. Thanks to weak motors, most other jet dryers can’t generate the fast airflow needed to dry hands quickly. They can also lack the power required to draw the air through a HEPA filter. ECO WALLPAPER The latest wallpaper collection from Eco Wallpaper features patterns created by the Scandinavian design group Front. This is the first time that the pioneering trio puts their design on paper creating a wallpaper collection based on a series of different shadow techniques. 10 years ago, Front changed the outlook on design when their horse lamps and pig tables put animals in the upper echelons of design.
