Due for completion by end-2019 and planned to be opened to the public in the first half of 2020, Splash World @ Harbour City is set to be the largest water park in Melaka with up to 5,200 visitors a day. The Harbour City project, which has a total estimated gross development value of RM2.2 billion, spans 4.5 mil sq ft in built-up area. It is a themed mixed development that incorporates retail, hospitality and entertainment elements. Developed by Gold Mart Sdn Bhd, it is slated for completion in 2020. Contractor on the project is China Construction Yangtze River (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd; structural engineer is SNA Consult Sdn Bhd; and architect is CHY Architects Sdn Bhd. Splash World will be the main attraction in the Harbour City, with an estimated development cost of RM200 million. It features a 500,000-sq-ft water park situated 14 floors above the ground, and is expected to attract 850,000 to one million visitors annually after the first year of operation. Hatten Land, a part of the Hatten Group, will develop the Splash World. Samsung C&T Corporation of South Korea will be operation advisor and consultant, while Polin Waterparks, headquartered in Turkey, will design and manufacture the water slide attractions.

“Splash World @ Harbour City will bring a transformational new dimension to our travel and leisure landscape and make Melaka an even more compelling international attraction,” said YAB Tuan Adly Bin Zahari, chief minister of Melaka. “The impact of this project will resonate beyond tourism to the broader economy, creating new jobs and opportunities for international economic partnerships and even direct investments.” Samsung C&T’s resort group is currently the owner and operator of South Korea’s

Everland Resort, which hosts eight million visitors per year. The resort consists of the Everland theme park - with attractions, shows, zoos and gardens - and the Caribbean Bay waterpark. Indonesia completes new wind power project Sidrap wind farm in Indonesia, believed to be the country’s first commercial-scale wind project, has recently been inaugurated. Mott MacDonald is lenders’ technical, environmental and social advisor to the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) on the scheme and will now monitor operations in an ongoing role. Located in South Sulawesi, the 75 MW wind farm will help the Indonesian government achieve its target of a 23% renewable energy contribution to the country’s electricity production by 2020. The scheme is capable of powering up to 70,000 households annually. Mott MacDonald has been involved in the Sidrap project since 2015. The company helped OPIC and SMBC achieve financial close for the scheme by performing a holistic due diligence to identify any potential completion or operational risks. This included assessing

16

the technical capabilities of each of the project’s stakeholders and reviewing its schedule, agreements and financial model. The company also provided construction monitoring services, including the installation of 30 Gamesa wind turbine generators that were positioned along three ridges on a relatively complex site. “We helped the lenders to understand contractor capabilities in this emerging market and to navigate power purchase agreement complexities, which are often encountered by countries in the early phases of renewable energy adoption,” said Robin Ingram, Mott MacDonald’s project manager. “Indonesia has fantastic potential for various sources of renewable energy, such as wind, geothermal and solar. In fact, another wind farm is already under construction in South Sulawesi which we are also advising the lenders on, while the wind power development pipeline is generally growing across the country.” n

Global design and consultancy company Arcadis has launched drone deployment services for Singapore’s construction industry. The company said it is among the first in the country and Southeast Asia to invest in industrial-grade drones in the construction sector, leading the way in the commercial use of drones. Arcadis highlighted that drones can help to address a wide range of challenges typically faced on large-scale construction projects. One of the benefits includes improved accuracy and quality of design work. The high-quality data collected by the drones are real-time and compatible with a vast range of applications and software for 3D model development, which allows efficient tracking of site progress and early identification of potential problems. Deploying drones can also lead to significant cost savings. They can be used at high-risk locations, eradicating the need for heavyduty superstructures for surveying and inspection of large-scale or inaccessible sites. For example, the use of a drone can help to reduce costs by approximately 50% for a typical topographic survey, said Arcadis. Another benefit is reduced overall time for projects. Due to the unobtrusive nature of drones, they are able to conduct site progress checks and surveying quickly without the need to halt active work sites during inspection operations. The ability to report data in an efficient and accurate manner allows work to be completed faster. In addition, the use of drones results in enhanced health and safety as it can minimise the need to access hazardous areas,

such as working at height or over water. Drones can also be fully automated through artificial intelligence and have the capability to identify potential construction risks, unsafe working environments and practices through surveillance. “As the construction industry embarks on a digital transformation, we are investing in new technologies which enables us to meet the changing needs of our clients. Arcadis is among the first in the industry and region to invest in commercial/ industrial-grade drones capable of operating in challenging environments to collect high quality data. We look forward to working with our clients to further embrace digitalisation and enjoy the benefits it brings,” said Tim Risbridger, country head for Singapore at Arcadis. n

Arcadis works towards improving Kuala Lumpur’s livability Arcadis recently held its Deep Orange co-creation and innovation workshop in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia, co-hosted with InvestKL. Working with KL’s public officials, the programme worked towards developing feasible solutions to improve the city’s livability in the areas of affordable housing, urban transportation and construction safety. Deep Orange, the fifth in its global series, is a unique approach for the construction, engineering and consultancy industry to take the first steps into digitalisation, said Arcadis. Held in July 2018, the four-day intensive programme is based on the fundamental principles of design thinking – a method for creative problem solving that uses ideation, rapid prototyping and validation. Supported by digital technology, eco-system partners and subject matter experts from KL, the teams worked rapidly to co-create solutions. At the end of Deep Orange, Arcadis and the city officials cocreated three innovative solutions. One of them is a connected technology system enabled by innovative tools such as drones and safety app to safeguard construction safety. Using real-time live data, this system will monitor safety amongst construction teams to make better decisions and reduce the number of fatalities. Another solution is a platform that focuses on affordable housing for future citizens of KL, which is addressed through two perspectives. Firstly, the platform will focus on the human side of engaging and changing behaviours around money, savings and planning for their future with a focus on transparency around

18

credit scoring. In parallel, the platform will also be data enabled allowing public institutions and city funds to provide financing to investable citizens. This data will also be used to improve the urban planning of housing. The third solution is an end-to-end technology enabled service to drive the use of public transport in KL. Using an app platform, the prototype will enable residents of KL to plan for efficient mobility around the ‘first’ and ’last’ mile of citizens journey and enhanced safety by connecting public transport options to private ride hailing services underpinned by data. These solutions will be further scoped by Arcadis and the respective authorities to explore their feasibility and implementation. n

Surbana Jurong, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) have set up a joint corporate laboratory to develop nextgeneration sustainable solutions to tackle industrial and complex urban challenges. The facility will include research to explore underground storage systems, sustainable indoor solutions for buildings, and digital technologies to scale up productivity in the built environment. Located at NTU, the S$61 million SJNTU Corporate Lab is underlined by a fiveyear partnership, which leverages NTU’s strengths in engineering and sustainability research, and Surbana Jurong’s track record in providing urban, infrastructure and industrial solutions to its global customers. The NRF facilitates the setting up of corporate labs via public-private partnerships. “The innovations developed at the SJNTU Corporate Lab will be tested on NTU’s Smart Campus, which is already pioneering the use of green construction technologies and is a testbed for innovations from autonomous electric vehicles to smart buildings and various applications of artificial intelligence,” said Professor Subra Suresh, president of NTU. “Rapid urbanisation, climate change and digitalisation are major trends that will continue to shape and transform the built environment,” added Wong Heang Fine, group CEO of Surbana Jurong. “The Lab will be working on projects which will not only be game changers for Singapore, but will also help to further establish Singapore as a global hub for sustainable urban and infrastructure solutions.”

SJ-NTU Corporate Lab to develop sustainable solutions

ABOVE: NTU, Surbana Jurong and the NRF have set up a joint SJ-NTU Corporate Laboratory to develop next-generation sustainable solutions to tackle industrial and complex urban challenges. ABOVE RIGHT: Visitors view one of the research projects from the Lab that involves creating a 3D building information model, which will help in construction and building management processes.

The key objectives of the SJ-NTU Corporate Lab will be to translate research outcomes into practical and viable solutions, which are focused around three core themes: digitalisation; green and sustainable urban solutions; and future of the industry and productivity. In its fully operational state, the facility is expected to have 70 researchers, including NTU undergraduates and PhD students. Kicking things off, researchers will be working on 11 projects that are aimed at optimising land usage, futureproofing buildings and infrastructure, and transforming the way buildings are designed and constructed. For example, researchers will develop a thermal management system and an indoor air quality system that is not only energy efficient, but also uses a botanical solution to purify the air. Another project involves a chilled ceiling technology that uses special composite materials for ceiling panels, which are linked to a central monitoring system.

On the digital front, researchers will look into creating technologies to scan and map the external and internal parts of building structures such as piping networks, to create Building Information Models. For a start, researchers will explore underground storage spaces for storing liquefied natural gas (LNG) in industrial and urban areas so that space aboveground can be freed up for other uses. The storage of LNG within these spaces will be kept at below 162°C to ensure it remains in a liquefied state. Asia’s first ‘Cold Lab’ that will develop ‘Cold Energy Capture’ and ‘Cold Energy Storage’ technologies will also be set up. These technologies harness cold temperatures produced during regasification, a process where LNG is converted back to natural gas at atmospheric temperature. The harnessed cold energy could power various industrial applications, such as cooling systems in warehouses and data centres. n

New green design and technology centre set up in Malaysia Surbana Jurong has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HELP University to set up a green design and technology centre in Malaysia, as well as to promote sustainability in the built environment. The new centre, which will be based in HELP University’s Subang 2 campus, will offer certificate courses on renewable energies, sustainable urban planning, architecture, engineering and infrastructure. It will also focus on research and development in these fields, and there are plans to offer these courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as in its international schools, at a later stage.

22

As part of the agreement, both HELP and Surbana Jurong will develop and organise courses on sustainable building design for commercial developers and consultants in Malaysia and the region. HELP (Higher Education Learning Philosophy) University was founded in 1986 to provide affordable quality educational opportunities for Malaysians. It has since developed into a leading institution of higher learning in Malaysia, and now aims to train future generations to be ready for Industry 4.0, in which artificial intelligence, increasing automation and data analytics will play a key role in managing economies and the lives of human beings. n

Gammon wins HK$2.6 bil contract in Hong Kong Gammon Construction has been awarded a HK$2.6 billion contract for Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link – Northern Connection Tunnel Buildings, Electrical and Mechanical Works by the Highways Department of Hong Kong. The works involve the provision of electrical and mechanical (E&M) facilitation to serve the newly constructed 5-km tunnel from Tuen Mun to Boundary Crossing Facilities Island and will comprise the tunnel’s ventilation, road lighting, central monitoring and control systems. The contract also requires civil and building works for the construction of several tunnel buildings including the Administration, Toll Control, Maintenance Depot and Satellite Control buildings, as well as the landscaping works on the landfall at either end of the tunnel. According to Gammon, Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) methods and an Integrated Digital Project Delivery (IDD) approach will be adopted to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of the contract. Plus, at least 70% of the E&M works will be of modular construction and drone photogrammetry for 3D mapping and surveying will be used to assist in delivering the works to the highest standards of accuracy. Other innovative solutions include a ‘flying factory’ (to facilitate off-site production), tailor-made cable laying trucks and off site construction of the toll booths. The works have already commenced with completion scheduled for late 2020. A workforce of 1,700 is expected to be engaged at construction peak.

Global engineering and infrastructure advisory company Aurecon has appointed Keith Chong (left) as its client director for infrastructure in Asia. Based in Hong Kong, Mr Chong will complement and collaborate with Scott Smith, who holds a parallel role as client director for infrastructure in Asia. According to Aurecon, Mr Chong’s appointment stems from Asia’s escalating economic activity that has seen US$900 billion spent annually on infrastructure projects in the region, based on Asian Development Bank (ADB) reports. The ADB estimates that Asia will need to invest US$1.7 trillion per year in infrastructure until 2030 to maintain its growth momentum, tackle poverty, and respond to climate change. Furthermore, 90% of the total investment needs are in the energy and transport sectors. This increased activity, along with changing demographics, rapid urbanisation, technological disruptions and evolving customer expectations, is placing greater pressure on infrastructure projects in both government and private sectors. Mr Chong has over 31 years of experience in infrastructure engineering. He led the conceptualisation and design of major transport infrastructure projects across Asia, including the iconic West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Terminus and one of the world’s largest standalone cargo facilities, SuperTerminal 1, in Hong Kong. He also served as project leader of high-profile rail projects such as Malaysia’s Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit Line 1 and 2. n

Manitowoc builds new tower crane factory in India Manitowoc has opened a new Potain tower crane factory in the Indian city of Chakan, located outside Pune, with production beginning in the first quarter of 2018. This facility replaces the company’s previous factory in Pune, which opened back in 2007. With a smaller land area as well as new equipment and lean processes, the new facility produces Potain MCT 85 and MC 125 cranes more efficiently and with greater quality. According to Manitowoc, both models are popular in India and the surrounding markets. Featuring a production area of 9,760 sq m, the new factory’s manufacturing footprint has been reduced by one-third compared to its previous facility but has been designed for the same level of production output. Among the upgrades in equipment at the facility are a new paint shop and shot blasting machine cells, complemented by intensive worker training. The facility layout delivers other productivity improvements. Most notably, the time to transport materials from the assembly area to the finished goods yard is reduced by 68%. There are other significant savings in material transport from the steel yard, supplier yard and fabrication area. In addition, being situated in Chakan offers better connectivity to national highways, speeding customer deliveries within India. The new facility is also closer to Mumbai from where Potain cranes are shipped to export markets. “This new factory is another demonstration of how The Manitowoc Way business philosophy guides our operations. We are focused on developing and executing lean strategies to improve efficiency, profitability and value for our stakeholders,” said David Semple, Manitowoc’s senior vice president for the Middle East

and India. “The majority of cranes manufactured at this new factory will be shipped to customers in India. But we will also serve neighbouring markets such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. All of our customers will benefit from the faster deliveries and enhanced quality of Potain cranes in this region.” n

PT Indopora acquires first Potain cranes Indonesian construction company PT Indonesia Pondasi Raya (known locally as PT Indopora) has taken delivery of its first Potain cranes from Manitowoc, comprising a Hup 32-27 self-erecting crane – it is said to be the first in Indonesia - and an MC 310 K12 top-slewing crane. They join PT Indopora’s fleet of 100-plus cranes, with the majority being crawler and mobile units. PT Indopora received the new cranes from PT Multicrane Perkasa, the Potain dealer for Indonesia. “We specialise in foundation work but as our business has expanded we’ve taken on more projects that include above-ground construction, so we need tower cranes to support that,” said Manuel, owner of PT Indopora. “A lot of our projects use precast construction, which can be quite heavy, so we opted for Potain cranes as they have some of the best load charts in the business.” Both cranes are working on separate jobsites in West Java. The MC 310 K12 is lifting precast sections and other materials for the construction of a shopping mall in Taman Harapan Indah, Bekasi City. The crane has a maximum capacity of 12 t and at its maximum radius of 70 m it can lift 3.2 t. The Hup 32-27 is deployed on the EcoHome project, a residential development that is part of the CitraRaya Tangerang integrated township. One of Potain’s newest self-erecting cranes, the Hup 32-27 features more than 20 configurations with one mast, two telescoping heights, four jib positions and a partial jib configuration. In its compact travel configuration, the crane is less than 12 m in length making it easier to move onto jobsites. Once there, its footprint is only 4 m x 4 m. The crane has a maximum capacity of 4 t and at its 32 m maximum radius it can lift 1 t. With its jib in the horizontal position, up to 27 m of height under hook is available, however this can be boosted to 40 m by luffing the jib upwards to 30°. n

CIMC plays role in Qatar’s World Cup stadium CIMC’s Yangzhou Base has recently supplied its modular containers to the Ras Abu Aboud Stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. When completed, the stadium will consist of 990 modular containers and seven storeys, and the whole project is expected to be finished by June 2020. This is believed to be the first time in the world that a large stadium is built with modular containers, and is reportedly also the first ‘green stadium’ that is detachable, mobile and recyclable in the history of the FIFA World Cup. Each of the containers is about 6-m-long, 2.5-m-wide and 2.5-m-high. Once it has been designed and decorated with different colours and patterns during on-site assembly, the sample container is furnished with a well-outfitted bathroom, tangerine inner wall, black partition and champagne gold hall. Wang Fei, the project manager, explained that after the site is selected, the framework of the entire stadium is constructed with a steel structure. Then, containers are put in place like Lego building blocks, and finally painting and decoration are carried out. “The prefabricated modular structure makes it possible to use less material and gives rise to less waste and emissions, and three years may be saved for the whole construction,” said Wang Fei. What’s more, the stadium is a detachable modular building, so it can be reused for other competitions in different places and be pieced together into several small venues. The modules can even be converted into economically affordable housing or refugee housing. The site where the original stadium stands can also be quickly turned into a green park. n

Linden Comansa rebrands as Comansa Linden Comansa will be returning to its original name – Comansa – and use it throughout the company. This change to a single brand will be implemented gradually across the product range and at the company’s facilities in Spain (headquarters), the US and China. From now on, the cranes manufactured in Pamplona, Spain, previously marketed under the Linden Comansa brand, and cranes manufactured in Hangzhou, China, distributed under the name Comansa CM, will all be known as Comansa. Each crane model will keep its current name, using the letters LC or CM to indicate the product range, thus avoiding any confusion on the market. For example, the 21LC750 model indicates that it is part of the range previously known as Linden Comansa, while the 21CM550 model is a part of the former Comansa CM range. “After acquiring the prestigious Linden 8000 system from the Swedish company Linden in 1983, we started to apply its technical concepts throughout our range of tower cranes, therefore allowing our customers to enjoy its many obvious advantages,” said Alberto Munárriz, CEO of Comansa. “Combining the names Linden and Comansa in a single brand was initially important as we looked to open up markets, as it gave us recognition on markets where Linden had been a major player and the benefits of its products were widely appreciated.” He added, “However, Comansa has been developing and improving this system for 35 years, and has been actively present on the market for over 50 years. The fact that we continue to be a benchmark in the tower crane industry today is not due to the name Linden in our trademark, but rather thanks to all the work we have put in over many years, allowing our products to be renowned for their quality. In fact, we are widely known on the market as Comansa, meaning the change is very natural. “Moreover, the company's situation has changed a great deal over recent years, having set up in China and embarked on

Changing the brand name to Comansa will be implemented gradually in all products and locations.

significant commercial expansion. This change aims to bolster our strategy at group level by having a single, uniform image on the market.” Excluding the name Linden from the brand does not mean that it is forgotten, stressed Mr Munárriz. "The Linden brand and system, and all they entail, are part of our DNA. In fact, Comansa is the only manufacturer whose range of horizontal jib cranes consists solely of a flat-top, pendant-free design, which was undoubtedly one of Linden’s most outstanding features,” he explained. “And, if there is one thing that characterises Comansa cranes, it is their outstanding modularity, just like Linden cranes. That is why Linden is still very much a part of the philosophy of all our products, even though it no longer appears in our brand name.” n

JCB invests in new manufacturing plant for machine cabs JCB has invested more than £50 million in a new manufacturing plant in the UK, which aims to double production of cabs used on its machines. The 350,000 sq ft facility for JCB Cab Systems is currently under construction adjacent to the A50 in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, next to two existing JCB plants. Geda teams up with Manitowoc Construction and industrial hoist manufacturer Geda and crane manufacturer Manitowoc have formed a partnership for the development of Geda Potain Cab-In internal mast crane operator hoist, which is designed exclusively for Potain top slewing cranes. The Geda Potain Cab-In enables a fast route to and from the cab. It fits inside all crane mast systems and is also compatible with all Potain bases and drive frames. It also increases cost efficiency since the hoist remains permanently in the crane, thus avoiding any additional transport costs and separate storage areas being required at the installation site. The Geda Potain Cab-In can be easily accessible and is therefore simple to maintain and service. For greater safety, Geda and Manitowoc have also developed a new, enclosed sliding landing level safety gate specifically for the hoist. The market launch for the Geda Potain Cab-In is planned for the end of 2018. According to Geda, the hoist complies with French regulations, which from 2019 will make installation of a crane operator hoist obligatory for every crane with a lifting height of 30 m. The hoist also complies with regulations in the Netherlands and Scandinavia. Manitowoc and Geda have concluded a five-year agreement for several hundred devices. Existing Potain cranes are to be retrofitted with the Geda Potain Cab-In. n

Bentley Systems has acquired London-based Synchro Software a leader in 4D construction modelling software - for scheduling and project management. This acquisition broadens Bentley’s ProjectWise construction offerings, which include ConstructSim, a leader for 4D construction modelling in project delivery of industrial plants. With construction project management in 4D, benefits of BIM can extend throughout infrastructure project delivery and asset lifecycles, as traditionally disconnected workflows become digital workflows. Within Synchro, 3D BIM deliverables are linked with the 4D time dimension to intrinsically and immersively synchronise, through digital workflows, the construction strategy, work breakdown structure, schedule, costs, resources, supply chain logistics and progress. Synchro’s 4D construction modelling incorporates other construction variables (human, materials, equipment, falseworks and space) for safe, reliable and predictable project delivery performance. By synchronising changes from BIM, schedule and/or field conditions, Synchro provides clear visibility into both the project data and the design, making it quick and easy to communicate and analyse the impact of changes on the entire project delivery process. This also enables Synchro users to compare construction strategy alternatives - even in early stages of design and bid processes - and to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of different scenarios, deriving insights toward the best possible construction outcomes. By incorporating Synchro 4D construction modelling through the ProjectWise CDE (Connected Data Environment), infrastructure project delivery can now benefit from digital workflow advancements. Change synchronisation can assure that BIM deliverables are updated for changes, which occur during construction, aligning the as-designed, as-constructed, and asoperated digital engineering models to improve both project performance and asset performance. And, in particular for civil infrastructure projects, constructioneering digital workflows

can automate direct relationships between the project’s digital engineering models, the continuously-surveyed digital context of site conditions before and during construction, and positioning devices controlling construction equipment and feeding back as-built conditions. For London’s Crossrail project, Synchro digital construction applied Bentley’s iModel work packaging to complete the reach of its BIM application portfolio and its CDE. Malcolm Taylor, head of technical information for Crossrail said, “Using specialist software from Bentley Systems and Synchro, our project schedule could be linked to the 3D information to produce 4D models that could show the progress of design and installation at any particular point in time. Using 4D models to plan helped speed up the project teams’ understanding of what we needed to do and when. They could also tease out conflicts that were not normally apparent from regular Gantt charts and drawings. Using the 4D model for construction progress also manages payment expectations as it allows teams to readily agree on what’s completed and accepted - as well as producing an excellent as-built record for the future maintainer.” n

IPAF Asia Conference 2018 ‘best-attended edition’ The IPAF Asia Conference and Showcase 2018 taking place from 18 and 19 July in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was attended by around 350 delegates - it is described as the best-attended edition of the event held to date. Hosted in conjunction with the Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM), with which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by IPAF, the event included a Showcase featuring more than 30 IPAF member firms beginning on Wednesday 18 July, with a gala dinner in the evening and the conference the following day. Among the conference speakers were Kang Han Fei (Aerial Lift & Equipment), Janne Haapalainen (Scan-Rent), Johnson Lai (Keng Guan Skylift) and Tan Kee Chong (OSH Specialist Department, Ministry of Manpower, Singapore). IPAF also demonstrated a virtual reality (VR) MEWP simulator to delegates as part of its ongoing global industry-wide consultation on new technology and its place in powered access. “This was another excellent occasion in IPAF’s burgeoning global events calendar and is now established alongside the IPAF Summit and IAPAs, Europlatform, ElevAÇÃO in Brazil and the IPAF Middle East Convention, traditionally held in November each year,” said Tim Whiteman, IPAF CEO & managing director. “IPAF has an engaged and vibrant membership in Malaysia and Singapore, so it made perfect sense to bring the event to this country for the first time, and it has once again been a great success – there was a palpable sense of excitement throughout the event and tremendous buy-in to what IPAF is trying to do in terms of driving up MEWP and MCWP training and safety standards across the whole region. “We also wish to thank our event partners, the Master Builders Association of Malaysia, for helping to make the whole event such a triumph and for spreading the word about IPAF and its mission to promote the safe and effective use of powered access to its own engaged and dedicated membership. We look forward to working with them in a true spirit of co-operation in future.”

At the event, IPAF has also premiered a short film warning people not to cut corners when using mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) to conduct temporary work at height. The hard-hitting film depicts an employee who complains to his boss about a faulty light, who follows two very different scenarios: In one the man is given a scissor lift in very poor condition and told to get on with the job without any training; in the other the man’s boss engages a reputable powered access rental company and offers his employee IPAF operator training. The outcomes are unsurprisingly very different. The film is aimed at spreading IPAF’s global MEWP safety and training message clearly and simply. It was developed by IPAF’s Malaysia members and launched officially at the event. The location for the next edition of the IPAF Asia Conference & Showcase, set for 17 and 18 July 2019, was revealed as Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, which sees the event return to mainland China following its debut in the country in 2017 in Changsha, Hunan ALL IMAGES: Scenes from IPAF Asia Conference & Showcase 2018 in Malaysia, province. n

Various innovations from Sandvik Sandvik’s new CH800i series of connected cone crushers includes a range of performance upgrades. It is the first to offer intelligent crushing based on actionable information via the My Sandvik portal, bringing digital transformation to quarries and mines. My Sandvik is the latest innovation in Sandvik crushers. Other automation features continuously measure and compensate for crusher liner wear, while Hydroset and the electric dump valve automatically provide overload protection to let tramp iron or other uncrushable material pass through. ASRi automatically adapts crushers to variations in feed conditions. The Sandvik CH800i comes with a range of upgrades, including a 65% stronger main shaft, and top and bottom shells that are up to 50% stronger than previous models, delivering more reliability and higher availability. It also has bolted rather than welded top and bottom shell liners to reduce maintenance time and add greater safety. Since no welding is needed when changing liners, the process is up to 90% faster, according to Sandvik. The new CH800i crusher system can be purchased as a completely new crusher, or customers can choose a Sandvik Reborn solution, replacing an existing crusher for a new one and reutilises existing auxiliaries and infrastructure. This plug and play installation minimises disruption and maximises productivity, while delivering up to 40% cost savings compared to a complete crusher system. In addition, the new Sandvik RR441 rotary bit with an advanced cutting structure design is an improved version of its predecessor RR440. The RR441’s sizes range from 171 to 406 mm, and it is equipped with an improved durability dual seal journal bearing. The RR441 is designed to last up to 140% longer than comparable rotary bits, such as the Sandvik R222 rotary drill bit. The RR441 features simplification of the bearing system, improvements in air flow and superior wear protection in soft rock applications. With an extended bit life and fewer bit changes, the RR441 maximises drilling uptime, providing a lower cost per meter and setting a new industry standard. Another innovation is the Sandvik RH560 DTH hammer, which combines the reliability of Sandvik RH460 with the

simplicity of Sandvik RH510. The enhanced air cycle and piston design deliver the higher striking power, while fewer internal parts provide good reliability, minimising failures and downtime. Through tests in varying rock condition, the RH560’s new design has been proven to offer up to a 15 percent increase in penetration rate, with smoother collaring and straighter blastholes, says Sandvik. The hammer improves reliability through optimised air consumption, increasing power and improving lubrication. This enables the drilling of larger holes at the same speed as a smaller hole with a standard hammer, resulting in further cost savings. RockPulse is also a new technology from Sandvik, representing a practical solution for real-time tool stress monitoring in top-hammer drilling. The add-on system integrates directly with the rock drill and its control system, and can be used for drilling process optimisation in varying

rock conditions. This technology offers significant potential to improve overall drilling performance, by as much as 5 %. RockPulse analyses each piston blow in real time to extract data on the tool stress, allowing operators to optimise drilling power and minimise inefficient use of percussion energy. The system is available for new Ranger DXi drill rigs and RD920 series rockdrills. RockPulse user interface visualises and alerts on three key parameters: drill bit response, tool load and feed level. Drill bit response helps to minimise the strain on the tools by indicating how much of the impact energy is used for breaking rock and how much is reflected back to the tool string. Tool load indicator shows the tensile stresses affecting on the tool string, which helps to avoid underfeed in weak rock and excessive wear of drilling tools. Feed level indication shows whether drilling is being done within the specified feed range. n Website: www.rocktechnology.sandvik

Liebherr introduces new crawler and all-terrain cranes The new 800 t LR 1800-1.0 extends the Liebherr range of crawler cranes in the class below 1,000 t, particularly for industrial work such as power plant construction and jobs in the petrochemicals industry – all of which generally require luffing jibs and derrick systems. The LR 1800-1.0 has been designed to achieve maximum lifting capacities for these applications whilst ensuring low-cost transport around the world. According to Liebherr, the concept for the boom system is completely new – three lattice sections are telescoped for transport. This principle has been designed and improved for the standard configuration with an 84-m main boom and 84-m luffing jib. The large lattice sections are located at the bottom section of the main boom, while the medium ones at the top section of the main boom and at the bottom section of the luffing jib. The small lattice sections are installed at the upper section of the luffing jib. The standard length can be extended to the maximum length of the boom system, which is 102 m for the main boom plus 102 m for the luffing jib. The LR 1800-1.0 is powered by a 455 kW Liebherr V8 diesel engine, which complies with the Stage V exhaust emissions standard. The basic machine is designed with a 3 m transport width and a maximum transport weight of 45 t, resulting in reduced transport costs. The weight of the crawler travel gear (60 t) can be reduced to a transport weight of less than 45 t by removing the tracks. The base plates have a standard width of 2 m to keep the ground pressure as low as possible. The LR 1800-1.0 also features the VarioTray innovation. After raising the lattice boom with a large derrick ballast, part of the ballast can be unbolted quickly and easily. Only a small proportion of the ballast is generally required for hoisting work with the boom in steep position, thereby avoiding the tiresome stacking and unstacking of ballast slabs. A hydraulically adjustable folding frame allows the ballast radius to be adjusted to up to 23 m. Therefore a fixed guiding frame is no longer required for a large radii. The ballast takes the form of 10 t Liebherr standard slabs, meaning that it can be used universally on other Liebherr crawler crane models. The LR 18001.0 operates with a maximum of 230 t of slewing platform ballast, 70 t of central ballast and up to 400 t of derrick ballast. In addition, the new Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 all-terrain crane is the successor to the LTM 1200-5.1, designed with an increased boom length and lifting capacity. Featuring lattice extensions, the maximum hook height has been increased by 10 m to 111 m. The Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 is an ideal crane for steep gradients and large hook heights, such as when erecting tower cranes or during maintenance work for wind turbines. There is a wide range of lattice jibs for the new LTM 1230-5.1. The 11.5- to 22 m-long folding jib can be mounted at an angle of 0°, 20° or 40°. It can be supplied with a hydraulic adjustment system as an option, which allows it to luff with a full load between 0° and 40°. The pivot point for the folding jib can be raised using up to three straight 7-m lattice sections acting as telescopic boom extensions. A fixed jib of up to 43 m in length can be achieved with an additional TF adapter (connection between the telescopic boom and the fixed jib), a reducer section and a headpiece. Existing lattice extensions are used for this purpose. This jib is generally hydraulically adjustable between 0° and 45° and thus can be used like a luffing jib. The existing parts can be used to assemble

a particularly powerful jib of up to 39 m in length, which is ideal for steep working positions. The maximum ballast for the LTM 1230-5.1 is 72 t, the same as its predecessor; but thanks to its VarioBallast, which can be adjusted from 4.8 to 5.7 m, the lifting capacity at great radii has been significantly increased compared to the LTM 1200-5.1 and also the LTM 1220-5.2. The LTM 1230-5.1 is equipped with the VarioBase technology, allowing the crane to have an asymmetrical support base – with the width being 7.4 m at the front and 8.1 m at the rear. It is also now possible to deliver high lifting capacities, particularly at the rear working area over the 8.1 m wide supports – calculated in real-time by the Liccon controller. The LTM 1230-5.1 features the Liebherr single-engine concept. It is powered by a six-cylinder 400 kW Liebherr diesel engine, with torque of 2,516 Nm. The engine complies with the Stage V exhaust emissions standard. The EcoMode also makes the vehicle significantly more comfortable and quieter due to the low engine speed. n Website: www.liebherr.com

New range of Bobcat R-series mini excavators Bobcat has introduced its latest R-series mini excavators from 2 to 4 t, comprising the E26, E27z, E27, E34 and E35z. The new generation of E26 model is an easy-to-use, robust machine optimised for specific rental industry needs while introducing the next level of operator comfort and features required by demanding owner-operators. It has a transport weight reduced by 100 kg but increased over-the-side lifting capacity. To overcome a common issue in the rental market and thus protect the uptime, the E26 is now equipped with innovative features such as the Cylinder-InsideBoom (CIB) workgroup and its geometry, increasing protection against bucket collision with the cab. The new E27z model further enhances the performance characteristics of Bobcat’s current E26 machine. As a Zero House Swing (ZHS) machine (even with the optional heavy counterweight), the E27z delivers high flexibility of movements when working close to walls, coupled with 360° stability and a low weight for easy transportation. With the optional long arm and a premium cab, the E27z offers the digging output and operator comfort of much larger excavators, making it suitable for urban operating construction companies. The new conventional swing E27 model introduces a combination of superior stability, class leading digging performance and breakout forces, together with a transport weight that is still below the weight limits for appropriate trailers. Even with the optional heavy counterweight, the E27 offers just 280 mm of tail overhang, which allows the machine to be operated in confined spaces. This makes it ideal for highly demanding applications where performance together with transportability have a priority over compactness. The 3.4-t-class E34 model features a new roomy premium cab with optional air conditioning to ensure a comfortable operator environment in all weather conditions. When transportability on a trailer and zero house swing are not needed, this machine provides an excellent mix of performance, stability and operator comfort. The E35z, a new generation model in the 3.5-t-class machine offers the additional benefits of ZHS design. It provides a mix of compactness, a large operating range for the workgroup (especially

with the optional long arm), great stability (two counterweight options available) and a spacious, comfortable operator area. According to Bobcat, the E34 and E35z are the only machines in their class that will be available with the optional automatic (hydraulic) track-tensioning feature, which further minimises the need for maintenance and the risk of detracking. A new blade design offers more robustness and enhanced self-cleaning ability for the new R-series excavators. The redesigned boom cylinder guard is complemented by increased protection of hoses, pipes and valves on the workgroup. There are two alternatives for positioning auxiliary couplers: boom-mounted for optimal protection or arm-mounted for easy access. To easily and safely connect attachments, Bobcat offers multiple mechanical or hydraulic coupler systems. Lehnhoff type couplers will now be available with factory installed tilting adapters (controlled by a dedicated AUX4 circuit). A bucket diverter valve kit (AUX3) is also available to operate a clam shell bucket attachment. n Website: www.bobcat.com

Link-Belt unveils 348 Series 2 lattice crawler crane The new 273-mt 348 Series 2 lattice crawler crane from Link-Belt Cranes is available with Cummins QSL 9 350-hp Tier 4 Final and Tier III engine options. Dual swing motors deliver dynamic control for the smooth-free swing that all Link-Belt Hylabs are known for having. The operator can also dial swing speed up or down with volume speed controls in the cab. Matching hydraulically driven main and auxiliary hoist drums utilise Link-Belt designed gear drives for either straight power-up/power-down auto brake mode, or can also incorporate an optional ‘wet clutch’ free fall feature, if required. New ultra-wide hoist drum laggings, an integral part of the drum itself, provide an extra-large circumference for the standard 28-mm hoist rope, extending rope life and offering maximum line pull of 24,179 kg. Greater fuel economy is one of the highlights of the Series 2 Eco winch system, resulting in lower operating cost, less engine RPM under load, fewer emissions, and all the line pull that is needed with the 28-mm rope. When activated by the operator, Eco hoist provides a maximum line speed with lighter loads all with the engine under 1,000 rpm. The operator-selectable ‘auto-engine shutdown’ is equipped as standard, allowing the engine to shut down automatically after extended periods of inactivity, so long as critical operating criteria are met. The crane operator is assisted by on-board high-resolution winch-view, rear-view, and non-cab side swing-view cameras to enhance jobsite visibility from within the cab. The cab is designed to be highly functional and comfortable, featuring a full LED system monitor and adjustable armchair-mounted controls. An audio/ visual travel and swing alarm system alerts crew members on the ground when the crane swings or travels. The intuitive rated capacity limiter monitoring system provides the operator with all lift information, and enables the operator to set swing and other control parameters creating virtual walls with audio, visual alarms and function kick out. The 348 Series 2 has telematics in place to give current data to better forecast maintenance and service needs of the crane. New attachment on the 348 Series 2 allows the heavyduty boom top section to remain in place to transition from conventional mode to luffing configuration, eliminating the need to change out tops. Maximum heavy-duty boom length is 91.4 m and maximum heavy-duty jib combination is 73.1 m plus 42.7 m. Maximum long-range boom length is 108.2 m and maximum long-range jib combination is 89.9 m plus 42.7 m. A maximum combination of 54.8 m of luffing boom and 73.1 m of luffing jib provides 128 m of attachment and a tip height of 127.7 m. In order to provide quick conversion from conventional style lifting to a luffing configuration, assembly has been simplified with the introduction of several features: semi-bore weldments for pin locations; ‘point of use’ storage provisions for all components; and stop cams for quick pin alignment. A new luffing jib transport package with lifting lugs simplifies and expedites luffer assembly. The rear post will scissor into place by means of alignment links. The transport package also comes assembled with nylon rope reeving to assist with initial luffing jib wire rope hoist reeving. The 348 Series 2 has a live mast cylinder for self-assembly and lattice extensions can be mixed and matched with existing conventional boom of 348 H5 models so users can use heavy duty, transition, and long range boom on the 348 Series 2. Two position track gauges offer variable track positions depending on the application: extended position provides a wide

base for operations where conditions allow 6.71 m and retracted at 5.84 m compliments for tighter, more restricted environments. Front and rear lower counterweights feature ‘hook and pin’ style carbody design and consist of two stacked weights at the front and rear – top counterweight slab weighs 7,699 kg and lower weighs 9,340 kg – fitting neatly between the side frames even in fully retracted gauge. The upper superstructure and lower carbody of the new 348 Series 2 comprise the main transport load, requiring no undecking or assist crane. To accommodate varying transport regulations throughout North America, the 348 Series 2 is equipped with carbody jacks and quick disconnects on lower hydraulics for quick and easy installation and removal of side frames when needed. Counterweight and lattice sections of the 348 Series 2 are also configured for minimal overflow loads. A new counterweight removal system can lift up to 102,965 kg of upper counterweight. The 348 Series 2 is manufactured and assembled in North America with support from around the globe. First shipments of the crane are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2018. n Website: www.linkbelt.com

GCP offers control flow concrete to boost productivity Concera admixtures from GCP Applied Technologies create control flow concrete that bridges the gap between conventional and selfcompacting concrete. Its labour-saving benefit could prove valuable as Asia’s labour market grows increasingly tight. Unlike self-compacting concrete, which is considered costly to produce because it requires a specialised mix design with high powder content and small coarse aggregates, control flow concrete offers many desirable characteristics of conventional and self-compacting concrete without the corresponding negatives, explains GCP. Like self-compacting mixes, control flow concrete flows and places easily without losing stability, which prevents aggregate segregation. It can be placed with minimal vibration, which helps to cut labour costs. And it does not require extensive quality control to produce, so it eliminates some of the costs that come with self-compacted concrete. It is manufactured using conventional mix designs, with lower powder contents and larger coarse aggregates, further reducing material costs. GCP also highlights that, like self-compacting concrete, control flow concrete is higher flowing than conventional concrete, and can be placed into forms with minimal vibration needed, making it an ideal solution for construction slabs and walls, where a smooth surface is vital. Traditional construction of tunnels, high rises and supporting columns on bridges is labour intensive because conventional concrete needs to be pumped to flow through the heavy steel reinforcement that is required. With control flow concrete, contractors could reduce labour costs since it flows easily and can be easily pumped. With minimal vibrations needed to place the concrete, fewer workers are needed on the jobsite, plus additional cost savings is achieved since vibration equipment is not needed or minimised. Control flow concrete is also ideal for creating precast concrete beams, columns and underground elements, says GCP,

because it is durable and the high flow concrete speeds up placement into forms while reducing the labour and equipment required. The ease of placement also enables precast producers to manufacture more daily, leading to improvements in productivity. GCP works with concrete producers and contractors to tailor the right Concera admixture for every project. The company has a network of specialists across Asia with knowledge of local construction methods, materials and building environments, to ensure its customers are able to receive the right product for their project. According to GCP, the first projects using the new technology have already been completed with favourable feedback. Powerful Aqua Cutter hydrodemolition robots The Aqua Cutter 710V and 410V hydrodemolition robots from Aquajet Systems offer a horizontal, vertical and overhead reach of up to 7 m and 4 m respectively. They are suitable for a wide variety of concrete removal tasks, such as renovation and bridge and road repair. The 410V is said to be the world’s smallest hydrodemolition robot, combining the compact size of the 410A model with the innovative mast system of the 710V model. The 2,300-kg 710V uses 14,500- to 40,000-psi water jets to remove as much as 1 cu m per hour of concrete, while the 1,250-kg 410V uses 15,000- to 40,000-psi water jets to remove up to 0.25 cu m per hour of concrete. Contractors adjust the robots’ stroke to control the depth of cuts, and vary the water pressure depending on whether they are removing loose, deteriorated concrete or lowering sound concrete to a pre-determined depth. The process has the added benefit of cleaning and descaling the rebar, compared to alternative methods, says Aquajet. The robots can be controlled from a safe distance using a radio remote control, either wirelessly or with a hard wire. The remote communicates with the wheeled power control module. Aquajet’s cutting head and its multi-axis 3D positioning system (plus extended reach for the 710V) are used to efficiently operate on all horizontal, vertical and overhead areas that would be difficult to get at with other equipment. This includes straight up and down work, such as demolishing walls, shafts and furnaces. The robots can easily remove concrete in corners that would be difficult to access with hand tools. Their steel mast has been constructed in sections, giving the operator freedom to raise the front power head as high as 7 m (710V) and 4 m (410V) without additional support. The 410V’s small size and light footprint also allow operators to use the unit in confined areas, including passing through narrow passages, such as doorframes or operating from scaffoldings, while retaining full mobility. The 710V is powered by an 18-kW diesel engine. Contractors can add an Aquajet Hybrid Kit, which easily attaches to a diesel-powered Aqua Cutter robot for electric operation in applications where diesel engines are not allowed, like parking garages, inside buildings or in other urban

environments. The kit uses an intelligent system to automatically disengage the onboard diesel engine. The 410V features electric power and contractors can also choose the Aqua Cutter 410V Tunnel Kit, which is well suited for tunnelling work. The kit provides automatic detection and the ability to adjust the distance to the tunnel surface. This makes it easy to operate in uneven tunnel shapes or oval tunnels. The ceramic nozzles on both robots are specifically designed for demanding hydrodemolition applications. According to Aquajet, these nozzles last around 300-350 hours depending on the water quality, whereas standard steel nozzles on competitive equipment typically have a lifetime of 20-40 hours. Each of the robots fits into Aquajet’s 7-m Power Packs. The large metal containers include a high-pressure Hammelmann pump, large capacity diesel engine and control system, with a convenient storage area for the robot, making for easy

transportation to and from the jobsite and a secure location for the duration of the job. In addition, the robots are designed for easy maintenance, resulting in minimal downtime. The 710V also comes in a larger version, the Aqua Cutter 710V XL. This 2,430-kg unit is 23 percent larger than the 710V, allowing for lower overall ground pressure and the ability to handle more reaction force. The three hydrodemolition robots are compatible with Aquajet’s line of accessories, such as rotolances and circular power heads, as well as spines and frames. The robots are also equipped with Aquajet’s Equal Distance System (EDS). EDS maintains a preset distance from the nozzle to the concrete surface, regardless of the angle of the water jet, leading to maximum efficiency and productivity. Aquajet says that systems without EDS lose as much as 20% of the power before the water hits the concrete, greatly reducing productivity and increasing waste. n Website: www.aquajet.se

Thai Bauer Co Ltd, the local subsidiary of Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, was commissioned as part of the large-scale project by developers Frasers Property and TCC Assets to undertake the foundation works for the buildings and execution of the diaphragm wall. In total, around 700 bored piles with diameters of 1,500 and 1,800 mm down to a depth of 80 m are to be installed, along with a diaphragm wall with a total length of 466 m and a depth of 35 m. For this job, Bauer BG 45, BG 40, BG 28 and GB 60 grabs are being used. Besides the permanent foundation works, Thai Bauer was also tasked with the preliminary pile load tests. These tests served to inspect the planned foundation for its load-bearing capacity and enabled the optimisation of the design by the client. According to Bauer, the biggest challenge faced by the company is the location of the project, which is right in the middle of pulsating downtown Bangkok. This means that each day the total quantity of excavated soil must be transported away from the construction site by trucks, subject to traffic and city regulations restricting operating times. In order to avoid delays and keep all adjoining roads free of contamination, Bauer decided to install special tyre washing facilities on site. Besides handling logistics for the removal of the excavated soil, the constant supply of the construction site with concrete and steel for the bored piles must also be ensured. To minimise the impact of the construction activity on nearby

road traffic, concrete batching plants have been set up on the construction site, says Bauer. This allows the company to continue working regardless of the traffic flow. At peak times, around 1,000 cu m of excavated soil will be removed daily and up to 850 cu m of concrete directly processed.

The project is being carried out according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) platinum level. The foundation works began in March 2018, with completion scheduled by April 2019. The entire development is planned to be completed in phases from 2022 to 2025. n Website: www.bauer.com

Mapei waterproofing systems for KL mixed-use project The Damansara City mixed used development in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was opened to the public in 2016. The project was developed by GuocoLand Malaysia, with both Daewoo Engineering & Construction and Ssangyong Engineering & Construction as the main contractor. The development is located adjacent to the Damansara Town Centre and includes two residential blocks, two office towers, a shopping mall and a hotel. It occupies a 3.4-ha site with a total development area of about 205,000 sq m. Construction of the project was carried out under two contracts: the first one comprised the residential blocks, basement and elevated podium car parks; and the second contract involved the office blocks, hotel and mall. Mapei products were chosen on the project to waterproof a number of sections. One of them was the Planiseal 288 twocomponent cementitious mortar used for the internal floors, walls and toilets, covering an area of 61,630 sq m. The system is suitable for waterproofing structures below ground level and storage tanks. The Mapelastic two-component, flexible cementitious mortar was selected for the swimming pool, pond, water tank and podium, covering a 29,116 sq m area; while the Mapenet alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh was applied on the swimming pool and pond, for an approximately 2,200 sq m area. The Mapenet system is designed for reinforcing protective waterproofing layers, antifracture membranes and thermal insulation systems. Another system from Mapei was Mapelastic Foundation, which was employed on an area of 1,880 sq m for lift pits and retaining walls. This two-component, flexible cementitious mortar is ideal for waterproofing concrete surfaces subject to negative and positive hydraulic lift. Other Mapei products on the project included Plastimul PU bitumen waterproofing emulsion, which was applied on the roof slabs, driveways and ledges (26,494 sq m); Mapeflex PU 45 for the roof panel joints (2,658 sq m); and Antiradice PE for the garden roof and planter boxes (3,500 sq m). n

Volvo pavers excel in Indonesia paving projects In order to maintain the runway quality for the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, local contractor PT Hutama Karya is relying on three Volvo ABG7820B tracked pavers. With only a narrow window of time to work during the night, when there are no flight activities, the machine’s high-quality finish and efficiency makes it ideal for overlaying the 3.6-kmlong and 60-m-wide runway at Terminal 2 with asphalt. The runway requires an overlay thickness of 19 cm, comprising two 7-cm layers of asphalt concrete binder course and one 5-cm layer of asphalt concrete wearing course. The ABG7820B’s combination of double tampers with screed vibrations enables the paver to achieve the highest possible degree of compaction, significantly reducing the need for subsequent roller compaction. On site since February 2017, the trio of ABG7820B tracked pavers are expected to remain until the project’s scheduled completion at the end of the year. Powered by a 170 kW Volvo D7 engine, the ABG7820B features a maximum paving width of 6 m and a paving output of 900 t/hr. The ABG7820B units are part of PT Hutama Karya’s large Volvo fleet, which includes seven EC210D excavators; two SD110 soil compactors; and an EC140 BLC excavator. The company acquired these machines through local Volvo CE dealer PT Indotruck Utama (ITU), whose service support has also helped ensure high machine uptime. In another project, a Volvo P6820C paver recently worked five to 10 hours daily to complete a 1 km access road on an industrial estate in Cakung, a subdistrict of north Jakarta. The project will allow the road to accommodate 40 t vehicles. The new Volvo P6820C tracked paver was bought from ITU by PT Widya Sapta Contractor. The machine offers paving widths of 2.5 to 10 m and is powered by a 142 kW Tier-3 compliant engine to offer an average paving output of 700t/hr. Equipped with a smart power mode, the P6820C delivers up to 30% in fuel savings compared with its predecessor. Volvo Variomatic screeds provide hydraulically-extending widths and the paver can also be configured with manual screeds. n Website: www.volvoce.com

Transporting heavy components for Japan power station Thailand-based transport specialist Silamas recently used Goldhofer vehicles to move two extremely heavy waste gas scrubbers for the Takehara coal-fired power station in Japan. The company was tasked to transport the units over a distance of about 800 m to the quay and then load them onto a barge. The power station comprises three plants and is one of the main sources of energy in the Hiroshima region, with a rated generating capacity of 1,300 MW. The scrubbers, each weighing 2,100 t and measuring a massive 16 m x 36.1 m x 36 m, were engineered by Slot-Nankai Co Ltd from Sattahip Port, Thailand. Due to the enormous weight and dimensions of the units, Silamas opted for two 24-axle parallel combinations. One parallel combination comprised two of PST/SLE 16 + THP/SL 8, while the configuration chosen for the second parallel combination included one of PST/SL 4 + THP/SL 20 and one of PST/SL 6 + THP/SL 18. With a tractive force of 160 kN per driven axle line and a sturdy frame, Goldhofer’s PST/SL series is among heavy-duty modules with the highest loading capacity on the market while the THP/SL modules, with their high bending moment, come into their own when handling concentrated loads in particular. A challenge on the project was that the different types of vehicles had to be coordinated to form a synchronised transport unit. Such complexity was managed with the help of Goldhofer’s Hydronic system - this computerised hydraulic steering control unit enables rod-steered THP/SL modules to be synchronised with the electronic steering systems of the self-propelled vehicles. Thanks to the Goldhofer’s Hydronic system, the vehicle combination with its cargo - weighing a total of 2,500 t - showed great precision in executing the first critical manoeuvre at the end of the journey when it had to drive onto a ramp with a slope of almost 5%. There was also a difference in height of more than 30 cm between the ramp and the barge, which was easily compensated with the stroke on the Goldhofer modules. What’s more, the Hydronic system allowed the entire vehicle combination to be controlled with just one operator. Another challenge was the subsequent drive onto the barge. Due to the limited space available at the loading point, the 40-m-long transporter had to approach the transport ship at an angle. Nevertheless, the cargo could be placed exactly on the

YTL and CDE team up to produce manufactured sand Batu Tiga Quarry Sdn Bhd, the quarry division of YTL Corporation Berhad, operates 15 quarry sites with 25 crushing and screening plants in Malaysia, producing more than 21 mil t of quarry products per year. It offers various sizes of products including 20 mm, 10 mm, quarry dust, crusher run, ballast, armour rocks and other customised sizes. Located near Kuala Lumpur, Batu Tiga Quarry is said to be the largest producer of manufactured sand in Malaysia. With the help of CDE technology and equipment, the company has managed to enhance the quality of its manufactured sand by improving the particle shape and controlling the silt content, for use in the production of ready mixed concrete. The process of producing manufactured sand begins with crushing of hard rocks into smaller fractions in a controlled manner to achieve a good particle shape. However, the crushing operation generates high and varying level of ultra-fines that lowers the commercial value of the crushed material and creates technical challenges for its use in concrete production. To alleviate these challenges, advanced wet processing techniques from CDE were used to consistently grade sand, making it free from adulteration and impurities, further improving the project efficiency by reducing the consumption of cement. As construction projects in Asia are booming, demand for sand in the region has ballooned and led to the plunder of riverbeds. Traditional sources of sand such as rivers and creeks are also being restricted by several countries around Southeast Asia, causing significant shortages. Manufactured sand is considered an ideal solution to solve this problem, as it has not only addressed environmental issues but also improved delivery and aided in cost reduction of construction projects. According to YTL, the company has almost eliminated river sand in its projects through substitutions, and wherever sand has to be used, it has switched to manufactured sand. YTL says such a solution improves project efficiency significantly, in addition to providing ecological benefits. CDE is introducing manufactured sand across Asia with over 280 installations spread over India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Its

technology aims to benefit the sand manufacturers by providing top quality graded construction sand and sustainable operations, since it reuses up to 95% of water used. By utilising normally low-value crusher fines for sand production, CDE can also extend the life of natural resources. Furthermore, at the Clean Enviro Summit Singapore (CESS) event taking place recently in July 2018, CDE Asia introduced its mobile recycling plant. The company’s ReUrban recycling range is a portable recycling system designed to tackle construction, demolition and excavation wastes. It uses physical and aqueous based methods involving high

intensity surface scrubbing of material to dislodge adhering fines necessary to reduce water absorption in recycled sand and aggregate. Fines fraction are graded and recovered as manufactured sands. CDE Asia, which is headquartered in Kolkata, India, is part of Northern Irelandbased CDE Global, a global provider of washing equipment for quarries, mines and recycling operations. The CDE equipment range has applications across a wide range of materials and is delivering significant efficiencies in the construction and recycling, mining, specialist industrial sands and environmental sectors. n Website: www.cdeasia.com

PERSPECTI VES

‘DIGITAL AND SPECIALIST SKILLS PLAY CRUCIAL ROLE AS ASIA PACIFIC PREPARES FOR UNPRECEDENTED INVESTMENT’ PAUL ROBERTS, PARTNER AT HKA, EXPLAINS HOW DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY AND SPECIALIST TALENT ARE CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE OF ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION IN ASIA PACIFIC, AND THAT THE INDUSTRY MUST ADAPT TO REAP THE BENEFITS. BIM: More than just sharing design information

“Engineering and construction companies need to be highly skilled in understanding the new digital era we’re entering so they can exploit its potential for their projects and, where they also own assets, in their facilities management,” says Mr Roberts. Governments have a lead role in driving public sector investment and engagement with digital, notably Building Information Modelling (BIM). “The uptake of BIM had been slow in Asia Pacific region, compared with the UK and Europe, but it’s ramped up over the last three to four years. BIM is now becoming mandatory in China and Hong Kong,” notes Mr Roberts, who is based in the HKA Brisbane office, Australia. HKA provides consulting, expert and advisory services for the development of major projects, programmes and assets around the world. The company’s global presence confirms that the digital challenge is proving daunting for contractors across all territories. “Construction companies are still struggling to configure their businesses to operate in a digital environment. They need digital transformation programmes to best serve clients’ needs,” advises Mr Roberts. He further points out that BIM’s potential goes beyond sharing design information. HKA is using BIM in the management of projects and contractual disputes. “We’re now taking BIM information, records from site, and costing information and linking it into programmes to produce visual models of a project through its life.” Visual models also make it much easier to understand the implications of delays without having to interpret the written word and bar charts, especially where clients and partners do not share the same first language. Presenting the impact visually, when a complex project is running six months behind, is far more powerful and persuasive, highlights Mr Roberts, a chartered quantity surveyor who has specialised in dispute avoidance and resolution for the last decade. Reality capture and 3/4/5D modelling provide advantages across risk management and commercial negotiation as well. Models with 4D and 5D links to time (e.g. through programmes) and costs (e.g. through pricing documents and/or accounts) are not only more readily understood by a layperson, but can also be extended through operations and beyond, and help clients focus on value rather than cost, adds Mr Roberts. This change of mindset is urgently needed as lowest-price tender awards drive margins even lower. Given the added risks of cyclical swings in workload, companies are reducing their

76

investment in innovation, just as they need to invest more to reap the rewards of digital and other technological advances. “This continual focus on price reduces investment by providers and stifles innovation,” warns Mr Roberts. “There is no short-term fix for this. The company’s perspective should extend all the way from a project’s conception to completion and into its operational life.” Rather than focus on capital expenditure (capex), often without fully considering the operational (opex), the company needs to focus on long-term value to drive total expenditure (totex) solutions. BIM and digital developments can help the industry see this bigger picture. An unprecedented boom in investment across the Asia Pacific region is going to test the capabilities of engineering and construction companies and their suppliers. “There is a global uptake in infrastructure activity, which is increasing the squeeze on skills and resources. Careful planning and supply chain management will be key to ensuring that the right skills are provided at the right time.”

SMEs offer specialist skills

Many major projects are underway or coming to market across the region. The Changi Airport Terminal 5 in Singapore will be the country’s most valuable project ever. Construction of the HK$140 billion Hong Kong Airport three-runway system is ongoing and the RMB 100 billion Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is nearing completion.

HKA will support the delivery of the new three-runway system at the Hong Kong International Airport (pictured). The company will lead a consortium delivering planning, programming, risk and BIM expertise drawn from its own global pool of advisers and its specialist delivery partners.

P E R S P E C TIVE S

HKA is working on Taiwan’s metro project, and Chinese main contractors are also delivering the super-power’s Belt and Road strategy in Asia and on other continents. New Zealand’s open economy is proving attractive and growing, with large projects such as the NZ$3 billion Auckland City Rail Link. Emerging economies too – including Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam – are poised for massive infrastructure spending, not least in energy. The complexity of such projects demand innovation and a breadth of capabilities that large consultancies may not be able to meet, especially in a buoyant market. Agile, tailored solutions are called for, says Mr Roberts. SMEs can offer the independent thinking and specialist talent that they lack. HKA has proven how highly organised yet flexible groups of specialised SMEs can outperform established megaconsultancies; co-opting and blending the technical expertise of SMEs can give clients the best joined-up solutions available. For example, niche skills in risk management, BIM, data analytics and other areas were a differentiating factor in HKA’s successful bid for Hong Kong’s third runway framework. HKA will lead a consortium delivering planning, programming, risk and BIM expertise drawn from its own global pool of advisers and its specialist delivery partners: Equib (risk management), Logikal (project performance management), Waldeck (digital twin solutions), and BIMS Group (BIM technology). This agile approach and digital know-how span the practice. For another project, it was a suite of highly innovative models for reality capture that set HKA’s proposal apart from other

Another way HKA does this is by connecting clients with their peers around the world so they can apply lessons from similar projects. “If we are to deliver the best outcomes for clients we need to tap this global network of best practice and talented disruptors to exploit the changing landscape for engineering and construction,” he concludes. n Website: www.hka.com

To celebrate this milestone, the project team held a toppingout ceremony.

Challenging project

All 81 stories of the building were completed in January this year, and the installation of the spire was completed soon after that. Vincom Centre, the luxury shopping mall at Landmark 81, is now open to the public. This 50,000 sq m facility occupies six of the 81 storeys. The rest of the tower is expected to be operational by the end of 2019. Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, provided its architecture and landscape design for Landmark 81. The supertall tower was crowned with the ‘World’s Best Architecture’ award at the International Property Awards 2017 held in London. It also picked up the ‘Best International Residential High-Rise Architecture’ and ‘Best Residential HighRise Architecture Asia Pacific’ awards, ‘Best Residential High-Rise Development Asia Pacific’ and ‘Best International Residential High-Rise Development’ at the International Property Awards 2016. Arup provided geotechnical, structural and fire engineering services for the development. The company overcame a number of challenges, including working in an area with exceptionally poor ground conditions under a fast-track design and construction programme. Arup’s design solution adopted a thick raft supported by barrette piles to allow maximum flexibility for subsequent development of the design, even as the foundation was

80

being constructed. Furthermore, Arup’s fire engineers introduced a lift-assisted evacuation strategy for people with various mobility conditions, which reduces the total evacuation time and risk of injury. Aurecon has also been involved in the project by managing all engineering work related to the building services as well as the lighting and the facade. The company was given just three months to develop detailed designs for the building services, such as HVAC, electrical, fire protection, plumbing, lightning protection and the elevator system.

The building services design incorporates several notable features. For example, for the first time in Vietnam, a central air conditioning system has been integrated into all residential apartments, removing the local condensing units outside individual apartments to deliver a smoother look. The HVAC system also has to meet Green Building standards, so waste heat from the air conditioning units will be recovered and used elsewhere, including in the heating of hot water. Moreover, in the three basement levels, Aurecon has created a 36,000 sq m system that includes

concrete plenums and jet fans along the dividing walls. This setup eliminates the need for traditional ductwork in the ceiling and increases the available headroom. For the plumbing, risers to every apartment are positioned facing the building corridors, and they also align vertically in all floors, simplifying maintenance. The firefighting system includes a design where the podium and three basement levels can utilise water tanks from neighbouring buildings. These are gravityactivated, saving on the expense of the pumping system and offering a safer design. In terms of lighting, Aurecon’s work covered all requirements for both the facade and the surrounding landscape, and there is a strong emphasis on energy efficiency. For example, all the luminaires use LEDs for better efficiency, and lighting management system controls the usage and level of lighting and includes daylight sensors so lighting is only on during hours of darkness. Aurecon’s work on the facade also included some challenging features, such as the wall entrance that comprises a 26-m-high glass and stone system with minimal framing members.

In addition, Mace has been delivering project management services on Landmark 81 since 2015. The company says the project has been record breaking since it began, with the earlier stages requiring Vietnam’s largest ever concrete pour. This involved excavating 25,000 cu m of soil, installing 6,500 t of reinforced steel, and using 17,000 cu m of concrete to create the 8.5-m-thick pile cap for the tower’s foundations. Such an engineering feat required detailed logistical planning, including the construction of temporary roads and walkways, staircases and specially designed cooling systems. The project’s concrete framework was also topped out six weeks ahead of schedule in March 2018, says Mace, and the installation of the spire was completed in just 14 days. To achieve the early topping out of the structure, Mace worked to optimise the typical floor cycle time of four days and regularly completed entire floors in just three days. For the installation of the spire, Mace worked closely with the contractor to plan and finalise the installation methodology and the subsequent removal of the luffing tower crane. As a result, the work took two weeks less than originally scoped.

Lifting solution

The contractor, Coteccons, deployed four Potain cranes from Manitowoc on Landmark 81 to handle steel, formwork and other materials during construction. The cranes included two MR 418 luffing jib cranes and two MCT 205 topless cranes, supplied by Potain’s dealer for Vietnam, Minh Chi. Manitowoc’s Lift Solutions team, working alongside the sales team, was closely involved in the planning stages for the installation of the cranes ahead of their deployment on the project. Lift Solutions not only helped with the crane selection, but also their positioning on the jobsite; customisation of the hoist drum; jacking and climbing; the proposed composition of mast sections; as well as the erection and dismantling sequences. The Lift Solutions team also helped design a console installation for one of the two MR 418 units. This was attached to the exterior of the building at approximately the 60th floor. The use of this console and a second MR 418 to build the highest floors of Landmark 81 meant that time and money were saved on dismantling and remounting the first MR 418 unit, which was previously installed inside the building and handled the construction of the first 67 floors. According to Dorian Huguet, Manitowoc team leader for Lift Solutions, the innovative console-design was necessary because of the building’s unique design. “The building tapers near the top. That means, at approximately the 67th floor, the core of the building became too small for the crane to continue working. Thus, the solution we devised was for a second MR 418, attached to the outside of the building via a console. The console supports the crane and helps transfer the load borne by the crane to the building,” explains Mr Huguet. “ The Potain MR 418 tower crane offers high quality, stability and safety,” describes Ho Van Thao, project director for Coteccons. “We are impressed by the speed and efficiency of the cranes. Their reliable operations helped us achieve a rate of progress of three days per floor, thus helping us finish the project ahead of schedule.” “With high-rise developments, the focus is always on how quickly you can complete your project,” says Suman Das, Manitowoc’s regional sales manager for tower cranes in Vietnam. “With a high capacity luffing jib crane, like the Potain MR 418, developers can build more floors within the construction timeframe and that means more space to rent.” The MR 418 cranes handled loads of up to 24 t and both were fitted with 50 m of jib, from their maximum of 60 m. The MR 418 was the first in Potain’s new series of luffing jib cranes and is designed specifically with high-rise construction in mind. The crane’s luffing mechanism and hoist are mounted inside the counterjib, which reduces the amount of space they occupy on site and simplifies their assembly. The 110 kW-rated 150 VVF luffing winch gives the crane excellent luffing speed, moving from the horizontal to the vertical in just 1 minute and 15 seconds. The luffing winch works seamlessly with the 201 kW-rated, 270 LVF 120 hoist winch, an optional addition on the crane and the largest available from Potain. It offers up to 826 m of rope capacity as well as excellent productivity on buildings over 200 m with lifting speeds of up to 254 m/min. Complementing the MR 418 were the two MCT 205 cranes, which handled loads of up to 10 t. For the Landmark 81 project, the cranes were fitted with 60 m of their maximum allowable 65 m jib. Coteccons’ scope of work covers civil and industrial construction. The company also offers design and build services. After completion of Landmark 81, Coteccons plans to transfer both its MR 418 units to the Viet Capital Centre project in Ho Chi Minh City. n

Pylons with variable geometry

The most striking feature on this project is said to be the 38 pylons with variable geometry. They are 45 m high and also form the supporting framework for the distinctive steel roof. To comply with the high safety and fair-faced concrete quality requirements, a total of 300 platforms of Doka MF 240 climbing formwork were used in combination with Top 50 large-area formwork to construct the pylons. According to Doka, the MF240 climbing formwork can be used for structures of any shape and angle of inclination, as it is able to adapt with excellent flexibility to widely differing requirements. High load-bearing capacity (50 kN per climbing bracket) and wide ±15° range of tilt adjustment for formwork and scaffold are among the system’s notable characteristics. The 2.40-m-wide platforms and the fully enclosed platform system offer plenty of space for fast, safe working. The 7-m-high slab will be supported by Eurex 20 floor props combined with Staxo 40 load-bearing towers. The Staxo 40 system stands out for being easy to handle, and adaptable to any building-construction project. Easy handling and logical sequence of assembly allow efficient and safe progress on the project. n Website: www.doka.com

USING DRONES TO DELIVER A MORE ACCURATE, SAFE AND COST-EFFECTIVE SURVEYING SOLUTION

lobal engineering and infrastructure a d v i s o r y co m p a ny A u re co n has developed a new software technology that can significantly change the way surveying is done in tunnelling, mining, drilling and construction projects. Currently, the status quo for inspecting rock faces is a manual process where geologists measure the failure planes and joints on the rock face in the field. With Aurecon’s new digital rock mass mapping from UAV photogrammetry tool, this can be done more accurately, quickly, safely and remotely. Camilla Gibbons, infrastructure associate of Aurecon in New Zealand, says that with the use of drones, smart algorithm development and software, the manual part of surveying has been transformed into a computerised method. “We are prototyping a software solution that uses drones to take digital photos of rocks and sites so that we can create 3D digital models. Our team has developed algorithms to extract the data from the photos so that we can automatically identify the areas that need to be measured within seconds,” she explains.

Improving safety and cost efficiency

Around the world, manual measurement methods are routinely used to get a statistically valid data set to represent the rock face. This is considered a time-consuming process, and also puts people in a high-risk environment for an unnecessarily long time, Aurecon points out. In environments like mine pits, quarries and large construction sites, people share spaces with large vehicles and plants - but in environments where companies are aiming for automated processes, the mixing of people and plant occurs minimally at best to ensure efficiency and most of all safety. On a project site in Hong Kong, Aurecon’s geological assessment team estimated that a year’s worth of field work would be needed to measure and assess the specific rock faces. Using the new digital rock mass mapping from UAV photogrammetry tool meant the team would be able to reduce the time to two months. “Not only does this tool vastly improve the time it takes our engineers to deliver solutions, but it also results in cost savings

Aurecon has developed a software technology that uses drones to take digital photos of rocks and sites, so that it can create 3D digital models. This new digital rock mass mapping from UAV photogrammetry tool will allow surveying in tunnelling, mining, drilling and construction projects to be done more accurately, quickly, safely and remotely.

for the client. There are also massive health and safety implications as geologists and surveyors won’t have to physically reach each part of a site, rock or cliff that they need to measure,” highlights Ms Gibbons. Richard Matchett, Aurecon’s digital practice lead in RSA & rest of Africa, adds that UAV rock mapping provides a unique opportunity for teams working on monitoring large cut faces along national roads in the more mountainous areas of South Africa. “We are collaborating with the Aurecon team in New Zealand to develop proof of concept of the digital mapping in these applications, and see possibilities with other major projects in the SADEC region. Aurecon is awaiting their Remote Operators Certificate (ROC) from the Civil Aviation Authority in South Africa that will enable us to operate UAVs extensively on large infrastructure projects. The added functionality provided through these algorithms will provide yet another application of aerial data capture to our growing digital offering,” says Mr Matchett. Formwork requirements such as scaffolding, which also has a direct impact on construction project timelines and cost

efficiencies, will also be greatly impacted by the new tool. With road construction and tunnelling projects, for example, lanes are generally closed and scaffolding is erected or elevated work platforms used so that geologists can reach the cliffs that they need to measure. The digital rock mass mapping from UAV photogrammetry tool would eliminate the need for these access solutions on a number of projects.

Greater accuracy

The software that Aurecon is prototyping utilises machine learning in combination with Geotech software to derive and display rock joints in an interactive photogrammetry model. “We are able to achieve high quality and accurate results. In the future, we envision that the tool can be used to design rock bolts as well as mesh and support methods that can be added into 3D design models to further the asset management records for our clients,” reveals Ms Gibbons. In an environment where the safety records of companies are under active discussion and the work environment of staff is being redesigned, this technology is set to be a valuable addition to the arsenal of tools reinventing the future of work. n Website: www.aurecongroup.com

TRANSFORMING MYANMAR WITH PRECAST TECHNOLOGY AS MYANMAR IS OPENING UP ITS ECONOMY, THE COUNTRY PLANS TO LAUNCH NUMEROUS RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS TO MEET THE HOUSING NEEDS IN YANGON AND OTHER BIG CITIES. PRECAST TECHNOLOGY IS SEEN AS A PRACTICAL SOLUTION TO HELP BUILD THESE DEVELOPMENTS QUICKLY, SAFELY AND COST EFFECTIVELY. Myanmar calling

One of the companies participating in Myanmar’s growth is Elematic, a Finnish supplier of precast production technology. “Our aim is to raise companies’ awareness about the advantages of precast and highlight the benefits of the technology,” says Ismo Kallio, vice president of sales at Elematic. The company also offers engineering and design services for precast buildings. “The country is lacking standardisation of the technology as well as experience in precast engineering,” notes Mr Kallio. “So people across the board – architects, planners, construction company owners – all need to be made aware of what precast can really do.” Traditionally, the country’s construction industry has been site-based which has resulted in many inefficiencies – delays, cost increases, material wastage and even unsafe working practices. This is when precast solutions could be optimised for the use of more efficient and less costly construction, explains Stefan Bonin, general manager for Myanmar at Rieckermann, a Germany-based industrial solution provider. “Due to rapid development of cities and their unregistered housing colonies, the need to create affordable housing for citizens is urgent,” emphasises Mr Bonin. “Precast production in controlled factory conditions has huge potential to help Myanmar with its housing challenges.” Elematic has partnered with Rieckermann since 2013 in Myanmar, following decades of their successful cooperations in other countries previously. The partnership works well for both companies. Rieckermann has a wide-reaching knowledge, its eye on the market and is well known across Asia. “Finding a

reliable partner in Asia is vital for us and we are pleased with Rieckermann’s local knowledge, expertise and local service, which will help us to grow in the new markets,” says Mr Kallio. The proposal from the Myanmar government reportedly presents several challenges for developers. The plan is public–private partnership - based, where the land can be supplied by the state but building work is done by the construction companies. “Because the projects require large investments from developers, they need to be completed on time and with minimal disruption. Using Elematic’s production technology is ideal for the whole construction of large housing blocks,” says Mr Bonin. But it’s not just a question of cost - Myanmar’s position in an earthquakeprone region also creates challenges with construction of safe housing and making the right choices is even more essential. Elematic points out that through thorough research and testing, it has been determined that precast concrete can perform equivalent or even better to a castin-place structure in seismic conditions. “Precast methods are being deployed in many other highly seismic areas,” adds Mr Bonin. Precast is a greener choice too, thanks to the use of less raw materials. “Compared to cast-in-situ, the method uses less cement, less water and less steel. It produces less waste on-site and in factory, and the need to use expensive imported cement is lower as a result,” says Mr Bonin. It is still considered early days for precast in Myanmar and the technology awaits wide spread adoption, but the response from developers has been overwhelmingly positive, reveals Mr Kallio. “People are clearly interested in the use of precast and how it can help to create better, more sustainable buildings in less time and in a safer environment.”

Precast floor

The Semi Floor production line from Elematic is suitable for Myanmar market, as it requires low investment while providing advanced machinery to produce highquality precast floors. Thanks to innovations in machinery design and fully mechanised operations, this production line is simple to operate and maintain. With smart machinery innovations, costs can also be minimised – the required initial investment is approximately 20 percent less compared to a similar

line with conventional solutions, says Elematic. The Semi Floor line is well suited to the production of hollow core slabs, but it can be used to manufacture other slab types such as ribbed/half slabs, solid slabs and piles. Key equipment in the line includes Extruder S5, Sawpreparer S5 and Bed S5, all of which are equipped with features that help deliver excellent slab quality and increased factory productivity. The Extruder S5 employs the original Elematic shear compaction technology that creates good quality end products and brings production costs down by minimising the use of concrete.

The Sawpreparer S5 is a combination of three processes: sawing, cleaning and strand pulling. Compared to a conventional separate saw and preparer system, the Sawpreparer S5 can cut the number of lifts in half. The machine is also easy to use, featuring an advanced graphic user interface, a camera system for situational awareness and improved safety, a 4WD for fast cleaning and strand pulling, and fully electronic operation, resulting in less maintenance and higher reliability.

The Bed S5 adds even more practical features to the Semi Floor line, including a high-quality even surface and a rigid steel structure, which guarantee the straightness and evenness of slabs. All machinery in the Semi Floor production line meets the strict requirements of the EC Machinery Directive, and the Extruder is also a low-noise machine (< 85 dB). The line can be custom-built to suit the particular needs of each specific factory, says Elematic.

Precast wall

Elematic’s Acotec non-load bearing precast partition wall panel is another precast solution suitable for Myanmar market. It is made from either Leca (a lightweight expanded clay aggregate that contains natural materials) or concrete, ensuring great resistance against moisture and temperature differences while also dampening sounds from elsewhere in the building. The length and thickness of the wall can be adjusted on the production line in accordance with the application and construction requirements. The thicker the wall is, the better its sound insulation and fire resistance properties. According to Elematic, it can even result in up to 120 minutes of fire resistance, depending on the thickness. Due to its standardised shape and light structure, Acotec wall can be installed up to 90 sq m per day by two workers (simple wall),

94

with the average being 50 sq m per day, explains Elematic. Building work can proceed up to six times faster when compared with traditional brickwork and about two times faster than blockwork. The Acotec production line is available in three technology levels: Semi, Pro and Edge. The Semi level is the simplest method and is currently being used in Myanmar, with a production capacity of 80 sq m per hour. It offers a smart combined restacker handler and automation only for the key processes. The Acotec wall panels have exact dimensions and completely even surface, so no plastering is needed. Elematic highlights that despite the thinness, the walls are strong and have been used in seismic areas. They are also suitable for wet rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens and showers, thanks to the moisture resistance of the material. n Website: www.elematic.com

HAMM TANDEM ROLLER WITH HYBRID TECHNOLOGY HAMM HAS DEVELOPED THE NEW HD+ 90i PH TANDEM ROLLER WITH HYBRID POWER TRAIN. IT COMBINES A CONVENTIONAL INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE WITH A HYDRAULIC ACCUMULATOR: THE DIESEL ENGINE COVERS THE BASE LOAD, WHILE THE HYDRAULIC ACCUMULATOR MEETS THE PEAK LOADS. Smaller engine, maximum performance

The underlying concept for the hybrid power train is based on the fact that although the maximum load is needed regularly while compacting, it is usually just for a few seconds at a time, says Hamm. This typically occurs when starting up or activating the vibration or oscillation, whereas other compaction tasks require significantly less power. For this reason, Hamm has equipped its power hybrid roller with a smaller diesel engine in combination with a hydraulic accumulator to satisfy the load peaks. The hydraulic system works rather like a pumped storage power station, explains Hamm. As soon as the power demand falls below the maximum load of the internal combustion engine, a pump fills the hydraulic accumulator. If a lot of power is required, the hydraulic system functions as an auxiliary drive, able to supply a maximum short-term load of up to 20 kW. Following

this, the cycle begins afresh with the refilling of the accumulator. Such a principle functions well because the maximum power is normally only called up for a matter of seconds. Afterwards there is sufficient time to replenish the accumulator. The hybrid technology allows the roller to deliver the same power with a smaller diesel engine (55.4 kW), instead of the larger 85-kW engine in the conventional version. Two other components of the HD+ 90i PH also help to ease the load on the diesel engine, including an efficiency-optimised electric fan drive and an efficient start-stop system. There are currently six standard variants for the HD+ 90i PH power hybrid roller: with double vibration (VV), double vibration with split drum (VV-S), one oscillation and one vibrating drum (VO), one oscillation and one split vibrating drum (VO-S), as a combi roller (VT) and as a combi roller with split vibrating drum (VT-S).

ABOVE: The hydraulic accumulator on the Hamm power hybrid roller delivers its energy on demand. This enables it to supply a maximum short-term load of up to 20 kW. RIGHT: The power distribution principle on the HD+ 90i PH with hybrid power train is that the maximum load (green) is only called up for brief periods. In all other working situations, there is an adequate reserve of power with which to replenish the hydraulic accumulator (orange) for the next demand.

The HD+ 90i PH achieved the same compaction performance as the comparable conventional 9-t roller, demonstrated through various trials in southwest France.

‘Trials with positive results’

During 2017, the 9-t HD+ 90i PH tandem roller underwent several trials on numerous construction sites in Europe with positive results, reveals Hamm. For example, handling and maintenance are simplified because the smaller engine does not require an SCR catalytic converter and thus no AdBlue. In addition, the roller is markedly quieter than its sibling with a bigger engine. This benefit was well received everywhere, such as when compacting the binder and surface courses on the A 93 motorway in Bavaria, Germany. According to Hamm, a Strabag team on the jobsite reported no differences in compaction performance and quality compared to conventionally powered 9-t rollers, and the lower noise emission was another advantage thanks to the modified engine output. The power hybrid roller was also put to work with the Swedish construction company NCC over a number of months in 2017, racking up well over 500 operating hours in the process. Analyses revealed two important findings - firstly, the PH roller invariably delivered the same compaction performance as its sibling model without hybrid technology; at the same time, NCC reported fuel savings of around 15%, leading to reduced CO2 emissions. In France, the HD+ 90i PH was used by French construction company Eiffage for a number of weeks on various sites in the southwest region. The jobs ranged from urban projects to the renovation of rural roads, involving the compaction of widely differing asphalt types. Hamm points out that two experienced roller drivers put the new machine through its paces and they both agreed that the reduced interior noise level made it an extremely pleasant driving experience. They could detect no difference to the 85-kW roller in terms of driving and compaction. What’s more, all sites were monitored by a team from the laboratory, and the evaluations showed that the degree of compaction on all projects was as good as the degree of compaction of the conventional HD+ 90ii.

Together they provided practical insights into the latest developments in cold milling, cold recycling, soil stabilisation, paving and compaction.

Global solutions for road construction

The new Hamm HD+ 90i PH tandem roller was one of the innovations introduced at this year’s Road Technology Days held by the Wirtgen Group in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Focusing on synergies, 3D applications and networked jobsite processes, the event presented the three companies of Wirtgen’s Road Technologies business sectors - cold milling specialist Wirtgen, road paver manufacturer Vögele and roller manufacturer Hamm. Together they provided practical insights into the latest developments in cold milling, cold recycling, soil stabilisation, paving and compaction. Taking place at the Vögele factory in April 2018, the Road Technology Days was attended by approximately 4,000 customers and road construction experts from more than 100 countries. In addition to specialist talks by selected experts and technology exhibitions, visitors were able to enjoy live demonstrations, factory tours and a machinery exhibition featuring around 70 displays. The event highlighted the interplay between milling, paving and compaction technologies and the corresponding synergy effects for road construction contractors. Inspired by the slogan ‘Synergies powered by Wirtgen Group’, Wirtgen, Vögele and Hamm showcased coordinated machine and application technologies in operation: a total of 25 machines milled, fed material, placed asphalt and compacted on an area of around 3,000 sq m in two live demonstrations.

100

In the area of digital measuring and control systems, the three companies demonstrated the latest 3D solutions. The Wirtgen SP 15 slipform paver, for instance, can pave the smallest of radii automatically thanks to its GPS-based Autopilot. Meanwhile, the Vögele 3D Navitronic Plus solution enables the layer thickness, the screed’s position and the paver’s direction of motion to be controlled automatically. And the Hamm HCQ system measures the most important compaction parameters and shows the roller operator directly on the display where more compaction is required. Specialist talks by selected experts and technology exhibitions also gave an overview of current and future developments in road construction. Wirtgen provided precise levelling, cost-effective cutting and advanced recycling technologies, while Vögele offered the software-based process management system, Witos Paving. The telematics solution networks road pavers, mixing plants and lorries, among others, supporting a coordinated supply of mix. All the players involved have real-time access to all data such as machine operating data and lorry loading and unloading times, allowing them to coordinate the processes precisely. Hamm demonstrated intelligent solutions for compaction, including the intuitive Easy Drive operating concept and the principle of oscillation. Since 2005, the Road Technology Days has been held alternately at the headquarters of Wirtgen, Vögele and Hamm. n Website: www.wirtgen-group.com

Designed by UNStudio, working with Arup, it comprises two 250-m-high towers with offices, apartments and a hotel, a 10-storey podium that houses retail outlets and restaurants, and a three-level basement. The project obtained LEED Core & Shell 2.0 Gold certification, and won the Grand Award (Mainland/Overseas Projects) at the Structural Excellence Awards 2017 organised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers/ The Institution of Structural Engineers Joint Structural Division. Arup’s scope of work included structural engineering, building services, sustainability strategy and fire engineering. Among the

F O CUS O N E A ST AS IA

ABOVE AND BELOW RIGHT: Arup shows how the structural system of the towers was developed to form the twists and curves of its geometry.

Developing a structural system that corresponds to the twisting architectural geometry was quite a challenge. It was decided that the building columns should follow the flow of the building shape, in order to maximise the floor layout. The building stability system comprised an internal reinforced concrete core working with a twisting outer moment frame of two-directionally tilted perimeter columns, which merge and bifurcate following the form of the building. Another key decision made early on was to adopt the same mirrored structural column arrangement for both towers, which are not identical but complement each other, promote a visual dialogue between the distinctly urban context in one direction and green, landscaped areas nearby. The design makes extensive use of reinforced concrete (RC). The external twisted frame consists of concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns and steel reinforced concrete (SRC) perimeter frame beams - but apart from these structural steel elements, the tower is essentially of RC construction. In China, buildings with a height of 250 m and above in general are largely comprised of structural steel. Arup’s efficient solution for the Raffles City Hangzhou - despite its height and non-typical form - predominantly uses RC. This constituted a significant cost saving compared to the structural steel construction.

Connection made simple

The combination of perimeter steel frame (CFT columns and SRC beams) and the RC floors struck a balance between the two materials’ respective stiffness and ductility, and also cost. Adopting the SRC beam enabled simplified connection detailing for the RC floor beams and slab supported by it. However, the SRC beam connection to the CFT column, a major connection that repeats along the perimeter and at every floor,

posed major problems, both in aesthetics and construction. The conventional ring beam composite joint detailing, as recommended in the Chinese codes, is too bulky and would have impacted on the local floor and ceiling detailing as well as the aesthetics of the tower, so Arup developed an innovative refinement to this repetitive perimeter CFT column and SRC beam connection detail. The solution was to enlarge the steel sections used in SRC and RC beams at the beam ends connecting to the CFT columns, and add stiffening plates inside the CFT columns. Such an approach removed the need for external stiffening plates to the CFT columns (as occurs in the standard code-recommended detail).

It made the construction much easier and significantly reduced the construction cost. This simplified deviation from standard detailing received commendation at the Expert Panel Review approvals stage of the project.

BELOW RIGHT: The approximation of a double-curved surface using flat planes. Parametric modelling played an important role in developing the structural system solution.

Four double-storey bridges connect the towers and podium in a number of formats, with the bridge end support and articulation details carefully chosen to isolate the towers from the podium during earthquake events. Rigorous footfall analysis throughout the bridges’ design resulted in lightweight frames that provide the necessary functionality and comfort for users, yet are seamlessly integrated into the curving lines of the architecture.

The podium structure features a dynamic double-curved external envelope and internal spaces shaped by various funnelling atria. Arup’s solutions for the podium began with placement of seismic and expansion joints to allow the towers and podium structure to act independently under seismic loading. In close coordination with the architect, the structural framing for the podium was developed to provide structurally invisible long-span spaces, flexibility for future shop arrangements, and high ceilings. There are many spaces in the podium building with spans of over 14 m and cantilevers of 6 m or more. With the exception of two pairs of V-shaped columns located diagonally at opposite points of the atria, the structural columns have been concealed - varying techniques were employed to achieve this, including transfers, hanging columns, kinked columns and composite steel beams for very long-span spaces. A performance-based fire engineering approach to the non-aligned, open and spacious podium atria used the podium architecture to good effect: smoke would ventilate naturally through vents in the roof should there be a fire.

During construction, Arup was also asked to assist in developing the structure for supporting and forming the double-curved podium envelope to make it easier and less costly to build, thus reducing the construction time required. Numerous structural systems were used in Arup’s solution, like inclined wind posts and steel backing frames to form the double-curved facade backing surface, with the breakthrough being the identification of different types of structural support systems, depending on the inclination and curvature of the facade. These were developed through parametric and iterative analyses (using Grasshopper) of the podium double-curved surface; and close cooperation with the architect to slightly modify the envelope shape if required, and also with the contractors for their advice on ‘buildability’.

Andrew Luong, Arup’s director in Shanghai, led the structural team from the design development stage through to construction. He was also instrumental in the podium facade resolutions.

The twisting tower shape and facade features of the podium, together with the large-scale geometry and variety of functions within the complex, posed challenges for the building services design. The chosen main system is a combination of centralisation and de-centralisation, offering sustainable building services that meet high standards for occupant comfort. Different heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) strategies were required to suit the individual functions. Offices and retail spaces need a significant amount of cooling/heating by day, whereas hotel rooms, which are generally occupied from evening until morning, have different operations and load profiles. Therefore, the hotel has its own cooling and heating plants, while offices, retail space and apartments are served by one chilled and hot water system to save space and minimise cost. In addition, the development adopted integrated sustainability design strategies that aim to set a new benchmark for the Eastern China region. Measures to minimise environmental impact, reduce energy consumption and carbon emission, and reuse/ recycle material were incorporated into the design process across disciplines. The result is a balance between sustainability, aesthetics and human comfort. A wide range of energy-saving solutions have been applied such as free cooling, air-side heat recovery, demand control ventilation with CO2 sensors, chilled water storage system, high COP chillers, natural ventilation, daylight sensors, high efficiency luminaries, daylighting and sunshine shading facade. The vertical transportation system uses level selection and other advanced systems to maximise core efficiency without compromising the performance. In combination, these strategies have led to energy cost savings, as well as reduced carbon emissions. There are also landscaped gardens around the buildings and on the rooftop of the podium. Despite being located on a tight urban plot, the development has achieved more than 20% green coverage. n
