WHY WE LOVE CAMP

Build a Brighter Community This Summer, we get to shine a light in local neighborhoods through multiple community service opportunities. On Saturday, May 19, volunteers are gathering at our campus parking lots* for the Home Framing Project, constructing wall frames to provide local homes for people who will intentionally share the love of Jesus with their neighborhoods. And throughout the Summer, Southeast is partnering with West End churches, CrossRoads Missions, and the Fuller Center to renovate homes in West Louisville through the Community Transformation Home Build. Volunteers of all ages and experience are welcome! Learn more about each of these family-friendly service projects in the What’s Happening section of this magazine, or visit southeastchristian.org/EVENTS to register. * Except for the La Grange Campus, which will build at La Grange Baptist Church on Commerce Parkway

LEAN IN We love Summer. The days are bright, the weather is warm, and creation sings with vibrant excitement. It’s a season to rest and rejoice in the goodness of what God has made, getting away for some needed refreshment through personal me-time and family we-time. Summer also has this uncanny way of revealing what our hearts cherish most of all. We see it in how we spend our time off, where we turn to find rejuvenation, and what we most look forward to on our calendars. In the words of Jesus, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21 NIV®) This season flies. Maybe one of Summer’s most underappreciated gifts is the reminder that life is short and eternity is long. What would it look like if we spent our sun-soaked days in light of the great day that never ends (Revelation 21:23-25)? What if we saw this season in light of the opportunities it affords us to live out our identity as the Church of Jesus Christ? Scripture teaches us that the Church is much more than a building—it’s a family! Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus has saved us from sin and welcomed us into the household of God through faith. With the Holy Spirit at work in us, we have the privilege of inviting others to come home—but even more than that, Jesus sends us into the world to spread His good news of grace (Matthew 28:19-20).

As part of our commission, God tells us to “seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you” (Jeremiah 29:7 NIV®) and to “Let your conversations always be full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (Colossians 4:6 NIV®) God has planted us in this place for a reason. Instead of taking the Summer to pull away in pursuit of our own leisure, we have the opportunity to give ourselves to the mission set before us. Let’s steward this season well, reaching beyond our campus walls as we lean into our relationship with the Lord and love others in His name. Let’s continue to fuel our souls on the riches of God’s Word and maintain a regular rhythm of prayer. Drawing from that deepening relationship with Him, let’s boldly share the Gospel with our neighbors, being honest and transparent about the redemption story God is writing in our own lives. Let’s engage our communities with the light of Christ, advancing the Kingdom as His ambassadors for the good of the world and the glory of His name. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 NIV®)

“The Church is unstoppable because God is unstoppable.”

BY ASHLEY WEECE

T

he Church of Jesus Christ is the most powerful agent of change in the world. It has stood strong when mighty empires have fallen. It has transformed villages, cities, and entire nations for the glory of God. It has mended deep cultural wounds, fought against the injustices of the marginalized, and served sacrificially to the point of death. The Church moves into places the world has deemed hopeless because the Church is led by the One who brings life out of death. The Church is powerful because Christ is powerful. I love the Church. 1 Corinthians 12 speaks of how followers of Jesus are joined into one body made up of many members. It is a powerful piece of Scripture that reveals God’s plan for the Church. In the Church, every person has purpose. In the Church, every gift matters to the movement of God’s Kingdom. And even as people pass away, leaders step out of their positions, and economies tank, the global Church will continue to grow, multiply, and send until the work is done. The Church is unstoppable because God is unstoppable. I love the Church. I love my local church at Southeast because, as long as there’s more work to be done in God’s plan of redemption, we will boldly move forward in our mission of Connecting people to Jesus and one another. We will continue stepping into the powerful work God has for us, carrying the message of the cross—the hope of the world—to every person who has ears to hear. I love my church because, above our elders, our Senior Pastor, and Teaching Pastor stands our true Leader, the Lord and Savior of our church—Jesus Christ. Here are six things Jesus teaches us about how members of the Church will live when He is their Leader:

5. FOLLOWERS OF JESUS SHARE BOLDLY.

We see Jesus sharing the Gospel—the good news of God’s saving love and redemption for sinners—with every person He met. Jesus was rejected many times, but that never stopped Him from proclaiming lifegiving truth. 6. FOLLOWERS OF JESUS WORSHIP JOYFULLY.

Everything Jesus did was for the glory of His Heavenly Father. He took every chance to lift His eyes to the One who gives us life. This is what the Bible tells us the Church looks like when Jesus leads it. Here at Southeast, we are, and will always strive to be, a church led by our Savior. We want to love, grow, serve, give, share, and worship for the glory of His name. That’s who we are, because Christ is our King. We believe the Church is the greatest change agent in the world, and at Southeast, we are eager to be part of the global body of Christ. I love my church because, while we aren’t perfect, we follow a perfect Leader. What about you? Is Jesus your Leader, your Savior, your Lord?

ASHLEY WEECE Preaching Ministry Assistant

1. FOLLOWERS OF JESUS LOVE RADICALLY.

In John 13:35, Jesus tells His disciples that people will know who they are really following by the way they love one another.

6-PART SERMON SERIES: I Love My Church

2. FOLLOWERS OF JESUS GROW INTENTIONALLY.

In the Gospels, we see Jesus form a deep friendship with an inner group of three guys, we see Him intentionally disciple a small group of 12, and then we see Him shape the hearts and lives of a team of 70 men and women. Jesus modeled growing intentionally. 3. FOLLOWERS OF JESUS SERVE FAITHFULLY.

For Jesus, service was never an obligation—it was a privileged opportunity. When other people tried to climb ranks and collect titles, Jesus washed feet. 4. FOLLOWERS OF JESUS GIVE GENEROUSLY.

you remember the four food groups? As a child of the ’80s, I still have vivid memories of taking annual tests in school where I had to correctly identify each of these groups and be able to recall the exact number of daily servings I should be eating. This was always hard for me to remember because, outside of school, my diet was a different story. To my peers and me, Twinkies, Lemonheads, Nerds, and Atomic Fireballs were the actual four food groups. At that age, making a daily effort to eat fiber, protein, and dairy was the furthest thing from my mind. On test days, though, we towed the line and answered the way our teachers wanted us to. Even though the USDA kept changing its mind—first with seven food groups, then four, and now five—the point my teachers were trying to get across was simple: food is a big deal.

hunger pangs. But even while He was on the verge of physical starvation, Jesus knew His need for the voice of God, expressed in Scripture, was greater still. Time spent alone with God, listening to His voice, was truly more important to Jesus than food itself. And if Jesus needed that time in God’s Word, how much more do we?

ARE YOU HUNGRY?

We don’t need to go 40 whole days without food to know what physical hunger feels like. But we might not immediately recognize when we’re spiritually starving. So, how do we know when we’re getting spiritually hungry? First, we usually know through our interactions with God Himself. Second, we know through our interactions with others. A good test to gauge our spiritual health is to simply ask, “What brings me the most joy right now?”

Food is a big deal in God’s Word, too. After God created Adam, it only took two verses for Him to start talking about what mankind would eat: “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.” (Genesis 1:29 ESV) Elsewhere, the Bible likens our spiritual walk to eating. In Psalm 34:8 (ESV) it says, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”

What makes you more joyful? An encouragement from Scripture? Or an upcoming trip? What helps you to find rest? A truth from God’s Word? Or a new toy you’ve ordered online? What gives you peace? A promise from God? Or the chance to sleep in a few extra mornings?

One of the reasons God gave us the gift of eating is so we could learn dependence on Him. Every time we gather together to eat, we’re admitting our own need and admitting that God is our Sustainer. We’re acknowledging that He provides our “daily bread” (Matthew 6:11).

“Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.” (Isaiah 55:2 ESV) I believe God’s desire for our Summer is that we feed regularly on His Word, finding our true rest in Him.

LIVING ON THE WORD

Jesus had a lot to say about eating, even when He was fasting from food. In Matthew 4:4 (ESV), Jesus responded to Satan’s temptation in the wilderness by quoting the Old Testament: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” This is a good reminder for us during the long Summer months when we can easily forget to keep our souls fed on the Word of God. Sometimes we end up neglecting the very things that keep our spirits strong, confident, and at rest. The amazing thing is that we can actually end up harming our soul by idolizing the very things meant to give us rest—things like vacations, picnics, sleeping in, grilling out, hiking, and time with friends and family. Throughout the Summer, we must make the same effort to remain dependent on God as is required throughout the rest of the year. Because our dependence on Him is our Summer rest. When Jesus said that mankind lives on every word that comes from God, He was saying this as His physical hunger had hit its peak. After Jesus had spent 40 days without food in the wilderness, Satan challenged Him to take advantage of His divine power by creating bread to satisfy His

In addition to spending some time in God’s Word, allow me to recommend some Bible-saturated books to help feed your soul this Summer. Here are a few that have encouraged me along the way: 1. The Power of a Transparent Testimony By Derek Snyder

“F 12

NEXT /// SUMMER 2018

or by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV) It’s a glorious day when someone places their faith in Jesus. A person living in darkness suddenly experiences the illuminating light of Heaven and is overwhelmed by the perfect love of God. By grace alone, an orphan without a home becomes an adopted child of the King. If you’re a follower of Jesus, then you can personally relate to what I’m talking about. In that moment, the sky might not have opened up to declare the majesty of God, but we can trust the angels in Heaven were rejoicing. We were all once wanderers without a home, but through the greatest sacrifice in history, Christ graciously brought us into His Kingdom.

As new citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, our hearts quickly began to change. Judgment became something of the past, and in its place, compassion stole the show. Striving to walk like the apostles, it became our mission to share Jesus’ story with all who would listen. It didn’t matter where we were or where we were going, sharing God’s transformational power was on the forefront of our minds. After all, we had just experienced it ourselves! Over time, however, the foundational truths that once enamored our hearts seem almost to lose their luster. Our salvation unintentionally becomes something we’ve marked off on our bucket list, rather than the miraculous gift we received from God. Gradually, our desires and actions resemble our former self, the person we were without Jesus. If we don’t catch ourselves, we may someday come to discover we’ve been living a double life, proclaiming the grace of Christ with our words while our lives betray another story: we’ve got it all together, we can trust in ourselves, and maybe—just maybe—we don’t need a Savior, after all.

Choose the Better Story If I’m being honest, this happens in my life far too often. My to-do list takes priority and time with God gets left on the back burner. Not only does stress become the idol of my heart, it becomes something I dwell on more than God’s Word. When this happens, the compassion and mercy I’m called to give other people tends to fade. Life quickly becomes all about me, leaving everyone else out in the cold—including Jesus. This is often true for many of us. Life gets a little too busy and we start going through the motions half-heartedly. Even though we’re weary of carrying that weight ourselves, we try harder, attempting to convince others of our inability to fall short of Christ’s expectations. In these moments, because we haven’t been investing in

“If we aren’t motivated to share our story of transformation through Christ, warts and all, then who will?” our relationship with the Lord, our conversations regarding Jesus become sparse, especially with those who need to know Him the most. When this happens, we might as well get nominated for an Academy Award. As people once motivated by the cross, we put facades in place to hide our weaknesses. Instead of boasting in Jesus’ strength, we act as though our frailty doesn’t exist. As broken people, we end up going through the motions, hoping others don’t notice our ongoing need for Christ. If you can identify with this struggle, please know you’re not alone. The life of a Christian can be challenging, but I pray we never resort to burying our story of redemption. From dust we came and to dust we shall return; but in between those moments, our Father has written a story that changed our eternity and, ultimately, brought glory to Himself. God’s story of grace in our weakness outshines our story of selfreliance any day of the week—because His story is true.

Your Testimony Is a Treasure Therefore, who are we to hide His marvelous narrative? If we’ve received His grace and been forever changed by His mercy, why would we hide our Godgiven testimony? Trust me: I hate looking back and seeing the sin in my life, too. It’s hard acknowledging the mistakes I’ve made. It hurts to work through my current brokenness. However, for the Christian, if there’s one consistent similarity in all of our stories, it’s Jesus. Despite our

unfaithfulness and tendency to drift away, He loves us. And He goes the extra mile to turn our eyes back to Him. If you have placed your faith in Jesus, then by His life, death, and resurrection, you’ve been set free. Free from the sin that once entangled you. Free from the mistakes that have followed you. Free from the weight of acting like you have it all together. This world doesn’t need more “perfect people”—as if such individuals exist! As followers of Jesus, we should be open and honest about God’s transformational power and our constant need for Him. Our communities are full of people who desperately need to know that Jesus can redeem their mistakes and bring new life to their future. If we aren’t motivated to share our story of transformation through Christ, warts and all, then who will? As we head into the Summer, I challenge all of us to set aside our masks of pride and be transparent with the people around us. Let’s stop going through the motions and, instead, boldly declare Christ’s redeeming power. If God can save me from the depth of my sin and change my heart, He has the power to transform anyone. And that is a story worth telling.

NEXT /// SUMMER 2018

season of Summer is a time to refresh, rejuvenate, and have fun. We let loose, go on vacations, and make a point to put some emphasis on life and the joys of freedom, friends, and family. But we often leave spiritual “disciplines” on the roadside on the way to some time off. It’s Summer—it’s a vacation! Who wants to be disciplined in prayer? Who wants to deal with the effort of figuring out what to say to God in praise, confession, repentance, and asking for the things we need? That might not be all that prayer is, but it can sure feel that way when we step outside the church walls and travel beyond our usual Christian social circles for the Summer. Summer is goofy and glorious. But prayer can seem so serious and humbling. Especially the Lord’s Prayer. Centuries of Christian tradition have marked the Lord’s Prayer as being particularly reverent, penitent, solemn, and perhaps even holier than other prayers. But when we encounter this prayer in Scripture, Jesus is right in the middle of warning the disciples against forms of hypocrisy and empty ritualism when praying. Then Jesus generously provides them with a powerful example of what prayer should really look like. Right now, I’m in the middle of teaching my son how to speak and form sentences, and I have to distill each sentence into nouns and verbs. Just two or three words packed with meaning. “More milk, please,” is the difference between unmet thirst and a cup full of the good stuff. The Lord’s Prayer is like that for us. Concise. Simple. But packed with goodness that can breathe life into a wandering or non-existent prayer life. Jesus’ prayer is a model for all of us to use. So, let’s use it!

PRAYING LINE BY LINE < < < To keep it simple, we’ll stick with Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV®). (Though, you might also want to check out Luke 11, where the Lord’s Prayer is repeated.) Don’t miss the beginning of verse 9: “This, then, is how you should pray…” There’s no discussion about whether to pray or not. It’s assumed that followers of Christ are people who pray. “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…” (v. 9) Notice how it starts: Our Father. That one word—our—implies an awareness of our brothers and sisters. Right away, we start with community, a kinship, and a bond that reinforces the unity and love that is so often stressed by Jesus Himself. We’re immediately to be of the mind that we are not alone in this prayer and in relationship to our Father. In what follows—God’s place in heaven and the holiness of His name—Jesus emphasizes how perfect and different God is. While Jesus became absolutely human in His incarnation without setting aside His divinity, God the Father does not share our humanity. The Being we pray to, the transcendent presence we experience and speak with, is beyond imagination in all His qualities. And we must recognize that as we head into prayer.

Too serious? The next line lightens our load. “…your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (v. 10) If you believe what the Bible says about the character of God— how faithful, just, loving, gracious, and merciful He is—this line brings with it a smile and sigh of relief. We are not alone in the battles of life! When we pray these words, we’re asking for blessings on our life and on the world around us. You know those family members you don’t get along with on those obligatory vacations? God is there, and He can enter into their lives and your relationship with them. And the friends struggling through sickness or divorce, or who just need a break? You’re praying God’s presence and authority into those situations. God is good! And His Kingdom and will are nothing but good. “Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (vv. 11-12) It’s here that I hesitate when praying this prayer. If I’m honest, I don’t want just my daily bread. I want a feast! Especially when I’m out in the world or on vacation. I want luxury. And following that request with asking God to forgive me as I forgive others—well, this prayer just got very real. But like praying God’s will to be done on earth, these lines can and should bring relief. His provision and mercies are new every day (Lamentations 3:22-23). We ask for provision and forgiveness while being reminded to forgive others. Every word here is meant to nourish and heal our hearts. “And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.” (v. 13) What a great place to wrap up, especially in light of our Summer months. When we venture away from the walls of our church and the comforts of Christian friends, we are bombarded by the enemy. Boldly ask for deliverance.

TAKE IT WITH YOU < < < Each line, each word in this prayer drips with emphasis. Use it. Here’s a challenge: repeat the Lord’s Prayer every day in the Summer months and reflect on what you’re saying. Leave your pride at the door and hunker down in front of God. Revel in His glory and authority. Pray for peace in your own life and the lives of those around you as you strike out on new adventures. Don’t be embarrassed if your current prayer life is lacking. Repeat after Jesus and follow Him into richer faith. This Summer, without so many structured studies and life burdens crying for our attention, we have the opportunity in the Lord’s Prayer to turn our eyes to heaven and enjoy the glories of prayer again.

A SLOW START TO WORLD EVANGELIZATION

There’s a great story in Mark 16. Jesus was making His post-resurrection appearances. He started with three women who were told at the tomb that He had risen and that they should go alert Peter and the disciples. Instead, “Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.” (Mark 16:8 NIV®) A slow start to world evangelization, but isn’t that where most of us are? Next, Mary Magdalene did report it to the disciples, but they refused to believe it. Strike two. Then Jesus appeared to two other disciples who reported it to the apostles, “…but they did not believe them either.” (Mark 16:13 NIV®) So Jesus took matters into His own hands when He appeared in person and rebuked His disciples for their unbelief. Then immediately afterward, “He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.’” (Mark 16:15 NIV®) He trusted the Great Commission to this very group of doubting, hard-hearted people. That’s because God’s commission is about everybody going everywhere and preaching to everyone EVANGELISM FOR EVERYONE

Evangelism is for everyone. Yet, in spite of how clear Jesus is on this, a majority of believers never share their faith, and Christianity is on the decline in America–ouch! Maybe we can do something about that. There are two big reasons for this low compliance with Jesus’ command: one is fear, and the other is a lack of knowledge. We just don’t know how to evangelize. We’re not sure really what that looks like in everyday life, and the whole thing can be very intimidating. Maybe I can help. There is a very simple tool that can make evangelism a part of everyday life, called the “RAMP.” It’s an acronym that stands for four compelling reasons why we follow Jesus: the Resurrection, the Apostles’ testimony, Miracles, and Prophecy. RAMP TOOL

Here’s how to use this simple method: 1. A sk the person about their spiritual journey. Be interested.

Then share the “RAMP.” Explain each point along the lines of the suggestions below.

Resurrection: The first reason is that Jesus never

sinned. But you and I have. And even though He was the greatest Man that ever lived, an evil government and religious leaders conspired to put Him to death. God accepted His death as a sacrifice for our sins. But on the third day He raised Jesus from the dead.

Apostles’ testimony: We know the resurrection is true

because there were eyewitnesses: Matthew, John, Peter, Paul, and over 500 others! Men that saw Him raised from the dead testified about it–even at the cost of their lives. In fact, almost all the apostles were put to death for their testimony, but they would not deny Jesus.

And they testified not only of Jesus’ resurrection, but also of incredible miracles and wonders that He performed. He opened the eyes of the blind and the ears of the deaf, He cast out demons, He raised the dead, He walked on water, and He fed thousands of hungry people with just some loaves and fish. There’s never been anyone like Him. Miracles:

Prophecy: And not only did He perform miracles,

but in the Old Testament, written hundreds of years before Jesus’ birth, there are over 300 predictions about His life. Some of the prophecies said that He would be born of a virgin, be born in Bethlehem, be a servant and a king, be a sacrifice for sins, be raised again, and ascend into Heaven. Jesus fulfilled them all! Ask, “Does this make sense to you? Would you like to learn more?” If they would like to, then you might be able to start a great discipleship relationship that may prove to be a huge blessing to both of you. If you’re not sure you’d know how to do that, then we can help. Team Expansion trains people to make disciples who make disciples. We’ve got a great variety of tools we use to help people connect with God and with one another.

2. T hen ask if you could share about your spiritual journey. If they say no, that’s okay. Feel free to talk about something else. You don’t have to persuade people who don’t want to listen. Even Jesus had a hard time doing that. 3. But if they respond positively, say, “I’ve become convinced that God has given us four powerful reasons to follow Jesus and I’ve seen the truth of these in my own life.”

“God’s commission is about everybody going everywhere and preaching to everyone.”

“ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS THINGS WE CAN DO AS PARENTS IS TO GIVE OUR CHILDREN A LITTLE BIT OF JESUS AND A WHOLE LOT OF RULES AND RELIGION.”

KEEPING OUR KIDS HOW CAN WE RAISE CHILDREN WHO WON’T WALK AWAY FROM THEIR FAITH?

R

aising children is a huge blessing for sure, but let’s not forget it can be a really tough job! I’m sure it’s normal that previous generations feel like theirs was the most difficult in history to raise kids. However, I would submit that our culture today is truly THE toughest environment for raising kids and will only get more difficult with the continuing advance of technology and communications. While monitoring your child’s use of gaming devices, YouTube watching, Snap Chat sending, and Instagram posting, you also need to connect with them in a relevant and challenging way that engages them to learn and grow to be the young people God wants them to be. My wife, Patty, and I are certainly no experts, but we do think that one of the keys to raising kids to walk with the Lord and embrace their faith is authenticity. Our children are exposed to more information than ever before in history. This, along with normal family dynamics, makes them more able than ever to discern when their parents are not really living out their own faith. They recognize hypocrisy.

MORE JESUS, LESS RELIGION

When talking about children who have walked away from their faith after leaving home, I’ve heard one parent say that they realized that they raised their daughter in church but they didn’t raise her in Jesus. In other words, they were more focused on talking about religious rules—meeting other people’s expectations or having the right appearances on the outside—than they were on investing in what was going on in the inside, in their child’s heart. In my opinion, one of the most dangerous things we can do as parents is to give our children a little bit of Jesus and a whole lot of rules and religion. By doing this, we emphasize good behavior over a genuine relationship with Christ. In Matthew 15, Jesus addressed the Pharisees who were more concerned with the outward appearance than the inner

heart. He agreed with Isaiah, who had prophesied, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” (Matthew 15:8-9 NIV®) As parents we must be careful not to be guilty of this. We should be authentic in our own faith and raise our kids with a whole lot of Jesus and not worry as much about the rules of religion. As they draw into Jesus, the Holy Spirit will naturally direct their hearts and adjust their steps. But if we focus on the rules rather than on Christ, they will know that path is empty and disappointing, and they will abandon it the moment it becomes too cumbersome.

LIVE AUTHENTICALLY

I think one way to do this is to be sure you don’t compartmentalize your faith. I encourage parents to be the same person on Monday that they are on Sunday. My wife and I have always tried to blend our family’s everyday life with our focus on Jesus. In everything we do, whether it is work, school, or chores around the house, we try to focus on why we do those things. It always comes back to our fundamental relationship with Jesus and His calling on our lives—not because a religion, or school, or boss tells us we are supposed to do something. Solomon advised parents to “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” (Proverbs 22:6 NIV®) The way a child should go is toward Jesus and begins with Him. Focus on what He has done for them and what His calling is for their lives, and train them on the truths that Scripture teaches in these areas. I believe you will then be more likely to raise children who own their faith and have an authentic walk with Him throughout their lives.

WHY WE LOVE CAMP DEEPENING FRIENDSHIPS, FINDING FAITH

20

NEXT /// SUMMER 2018

By Savana and Olivia Day

Southeast offers Summer camps for 1st-12th grade students. Whether it’s making a first-time decision to follow Jesus and be baptized or a commitment to live a life of Kingdom Work, Summer camps are an incredible platform God uses to speak into lives in unforgettable ways. We invited two sisters, Savana and Olivia Day, to share why they love camp, and why they keep going back for more.

G

oing to camp is like packing your friends up on a bus and going on vacation—a rest for your body, mind, and soul. Our first memory of these vacations takes place at middle school Summer camp. As timid, young students, walking in and being surrounded by hundreds of others was intimidating. However, we were surprised by immediate feelings of inclusion, acceptance, and freedom.

by the continued support of our parents. Some parents sent letters of encouragement, providing an unspoken invitation to share our feelings and ideas with them. Most of us knew that our parents would be ready and waiting for us at home. The freedom of sharing personal thoughts and feelings while away from home paved the way for us to do the same once we returned to our parents and friends. Our relationships back home grew stronger when we returned. All in all, we were shaped by our camp experiences. We are the people we are today because of the closeknit relationship we have with our Lord. Despite growing older, the excitement and joy of going to camp never gets old.

SAVANA AND OLIVIA DAY

We recall rushing into our dorms, throwing on our swimsuits, and following our friends to the beach. Another memory is of the buzzing excitement of waiting in line to face our fears on the zipline and racing our friends in the kayaks. This was exactly what we needed to melt away all the distractions of the world.

EXPERIENCING OUR OWN FAITH

Students with Southeast’s High School Ministry

SOUTHEAST SUMMER CAMPS 2018

While these activities were nice, they are not what keep us coming back year after year. What brings us back isn’t the yummy breakfast, beautiful scenery, or exhilarating ziplines—it is the intimate time with God that we just can’t seem to find at home. We had never seen such passion for worship before. All the hands in the air, praising the Lord, seemed unusual to us at the time. But in time, we found ourselves joining in; our hearts were beginning to fill with the desire to do more with our newfound relationship with the Lord. It was one of the first times we realized we could choose a relationship with Jesus for ourselves, rather than our parents deciding for us.

SE!KIDS

Being surrounded by others with the same beliefs gave us a certain freedom—a freedom to speak what was truly in our hearts. We spoke without fear of ridicule or questioning. With each endearing conversation with a stranger came a new friendship. We all left our insecurities and worries at home; this let everyone have a clean slate. While one of us had already made the decision, it was at camp that the other chose her own faith, abandoning her timidity as God gave her the confidence to go forward to be baptized.
