and wooded wildlife areas, the Missouri River is also the major North American migratory waterfowl flyway, making it a prime birdwatching destination for beginners as well as experienced birdwatchers. Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve kicks off your adventure at our SE border. Lewis & Clark Recreation Area, just west of Yankton on Lewis & Clark Lake, is the region’s largest park and one of South Dakota’s top outdoor recreation destinations. Good Earth State Park, South Dakota’s newest state park, located just east of Sioux Falls, is a National Historic Landmark featuring miles of trails and a Visitor Center with exhibits documenting it’s rich history. Observe the falls of the Big Sioux Lewis & Clark Lake, Yankton River as well as the skyline of Sioux Falls from a five story observation tower at Falls Park, Sioux Fall’s #1 attraction and ranked in the top five city parks by USA Today in 2021. Palisades State Park at Garretson is a unique area. Split Rock Creek, which flows through the park, is lined with Sioux quartzite formations that rise above the water to 50-foot vertical cliffs. The park is popular among campers, rock climbers, hikers and kayakers. Visit Spirit Mound, near Vermillion, and take the trail to the summit to stand where Lewis & Clark stood 200 years ago and view 300 acres of native grass prairie and wildflowers. Find top rated golf courses throughout the region. Springfield’s 9-hole course, perched atop the Missouri River bluffs, is #1 in the state. Grand Falls Casino and Golf Resort in Larchwood, Iowa, has an award winning course designed by the famous Rees Jones.
