Enjoy exceptional lectures, discover new products and ideas in the Exhibit Hall, and engage in networking and team building activities throughout the weekend. You won’t want to miss our BIG EVENT— a Block Party with food, drinks, dancing, and entertainment along the streets of Universal CityWalk

2024 Keynote Speaker Roberto Clemente, Jr.

Hello Fellow Members!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Orlando for a meeting that will truly go down in history! Though our roots are over 100 years old, we have been meeting together for Annual Sessions for several years. This year we will hold our first combined annual business meeting of the SAO and SWSO, now operating together as the Southern Society of Orthodontists. Members representing each individual association have worked tirelessly to map out the details of our new structure. We have SO MUCH to celebrate and share with you.

You are going to love the days and nights planned for our time in Orlando. We start by “hitting it out of the park,” building bicycles for local kids in Orlando. This act of charity will demonstrate that we truly are better when we work together. As professionals and association members, helping others is part of our core values.

We trust you’ll find everything you love about our meetings at the 2024 Annual Session — education, networking and relaxation with colleagues and industry friends! Orlando is historically one of our most popular meeting destinations with many attractions, shopping districts and theme parks to explore. Our meeting wraps up Saturday with plenty of time for you to take in some fun with your team, family, colleagues and friends.

See you in Orlando!

Everyone is invited to our opening ceremony to hear from our association leaders and honor and recognize our award winners for their service and dedication to our profession. We will then enjoy a touching and powerful keynote address by Roberto Clemente Jr., the son of the legendary Pittsburgh Pirates right-fielder Roberto Clemente, one of the greatest athletes and humanitarians of the 20th century. His iconic 21 jersey is inscribed into sporting legend as not only symbolizing the records he set but for the lives he touched with his activism and with the simple power of watching someone from your community achieve excellence without compromising their character. He died tragically, while on a trip delivering humanitarian aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua in 1972. Roberto Clemente became the first Caribbean and the first LatinAmerican player to be honored in the Hall of Fame, posthumously inducted in 1973. Today, his family works to honor his legacy by continuing his charitable works. In this keynote address, Roberto Clemente Jr. will share stories about his all-star dad and the impact his father’s untimely

death had on his life and the lives of those he impacted. We hope you will join us as he inspires us to discover ways that we, like Roberto Clemente, can impact the world around us.

Help us build 121 bikes for kids at a Bike Build to honor baseball legend Roberto Clemente

Roberto’s Bike Build MAKE AN IMPACT

Separate registration required. To help build the bikes, or make a donation, scan the QR code.

Roberto’s Bike Build

Thursday, September 26 | 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

This year’s keynote speaker, Roberto Clemente Jr., is the son of Roberto Clemente, an award-winning Pittsburgh Pirates rightfielder who was as passionate about charity work as he was for the sport he loved. On Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Shingle Creek, you can make a difference in the life of a child. We will come together to build bicycles to be gifted to local Orlando children in need. We need your help to reach our goal of building 121 bikes:

• Donating – Help support the cost of the bikes and the costs associated with the build (tools, instructors, transport).

• Building – Attend the bike build as an individual or together as a practice, state leadership board, orthodontic residency group, or exhibiting company.

We hope everyone will consider the impact you can make by participating in this heart-warming activity. Scan the QR code to register to build, donate – or BOTH!

Why 121 Bikes?

Roberto Clemente wore #21 when he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates retired his jersey number, but you will often see teams around the Major League sport the number 21 on their jerseys for Roberto Clemente Day each fall. To honor the number, we set a goal to build 121 bikes. You’ll see our donation amounts also include the number 21.

Guide to People Management: Understanding Patient and Staff Personality Types

Dr. Neal Kravitz

8:00 am – 8:50 am | 1 CE Credit | All Attendees

The DiSC theory is a popular classification system originating in the 1920s that categorizes all individuals into four primary behavior types: D-Dominant, I-Influential, S-Steady, and C-Conscientious. The aim of the DiSC theory is to categorize people by their temperaments in order to improve relationships. In other words, if we know how people behave, we will know how to treat them. For the orthodontist and team, understanding DiSC will increase case closure, highlight which patients are challenging to treat, and aid in hiring the appropriate staff. Teaching DiSC is my favorite subject, and I promise this will be one of the most important lectures you will hear.

Objectives:

• Understand DiSC Theory

• Learn to modify your consult based on the patient’s behavior type

• Discover how to spot the dreaded C-personality and finish their treatment successfully.

• Learn how to apply DiSC to hire a dream team.

Educator’s Meeting

8:00 am – 12:00 pm

New Clinical Pearls for Your Practice!

Dr. Neal Kravitz

9:30 am – 11:30 am | 2 CE Credits | Clinical Track

Jackie Kennedy was famously quoted as saying, “Pearls are always appropriate.” The same could be said about sharing orthodontic clinical pearls. Who doesn’t love picking up those invaluable tidbits hidden within a lecture? After all, clinical pearls are the easiest lessons to take home and immediately implement into practice. It is a passion of mine to share my clinical ideas with other orthodontists; what better way than with a lecture entirely devoted to the topic? Be ready for a fun and fastpaced presentation chock full of NEW clinical pearls.

Oops, We Did It Again: Avoid Recurring Legal Mistakes in Orthodontic Practice

Mr. Trey Lawrence

12:30 pm – 1:30 pm | 1 CE Credit | Business Track

The legal requirements that apply to orthodontic practices are multilayered, complex, and often, not well known to doctors and practice staff. Former General Counsel and current CEO for the AAO, Trey Lawrence, takes doctors and staff through a survey of legal issues that can dramatically impact practices but may not be obvious or well-known. Social media, advertising, responding to online reviews, conducting drawings and other marketing contests, and the informed consent process are all areas (among others) that practices can create legal liability without realizing it. This presentation provides practitioners with an overview of common areas orthodontists and staff unknowingly bring on legal liability, as well as tips to avoid these risks.

Indirect Bonding

He will also address the more difficult-to-measure aspects of employee morale, effectiveness, and staff empowerment.

Meet Our Speakers

Mr. Harrison Bagdan

Harrison Bagdan is the Senior Practice Advisor at HIP Creative and has become the big personality he is today from his experiences.

Attending college on a lacrosse scholarship, Harrison studied Kinesiology, the study of the movement of the human body, and Athletic Training. As a 19-year-old sophomore, he left college to pursue a career in the sales and marketing industry, a venture where he truly gained his knowledge and education. He read more books outside of school than his schooling total combined. Becoming independent before the age of 21, Harrison realized the value of personal development, continuous education, and continuous improvement. He regularly continues to read books and attend seminars to improve himself. A quote that he lives his life by is, “In order to help people up, you must first be on higher ground.”

Now, at the ripe age of 31, Harrison has personally trained and coached thousands of people on sales and marketing to help grow their business three to five fold. His personal passion today is to help people to realize that they are better than they think they are.

Dr. Jason Battle

Dr. Jason Battle is a technology geek and orthodontist practicing in the Orlando area for nearly 2 decades. He has a particular interest in systemization, time management and improved orthodontic delivery of care. With the time that he creates from efficiencies in treatment, he likes to grill, smoke, prepare, and eat a variety of foods.

Mr. Roberto Clemente, Jr. Roberto Clemente Jr. is a universally respected philanthropist, humanitarian, entrepreneur, producer, former broadcaster, and professional baseball player. Roberto’s father, Roberto Clemente Sr. was the first Latin American player to compile 3,000 hits in MLB history and the first Latino to enter into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Roberto Sr. used his platform and immense athletic gift to serve others and devote his short life to helping make the world a better place, something Roberto Jr. has duplicated and taken very seriously. Roberto Jr. utilizes his experiences not only as an Afro-Latino but beyond to leverage his platform to help thousands of others on an intensely diverse array of subjects and today’s challenges.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the first seven years of Roberto Jr.’s life were spent between Puerto Rico and Pittsburgh, PA. After his father’s untimely and tragic death in a 1972 plane crash while taking relief supplies to Nicaragua earthquake victims, Roberto Jr. became his father’s voice and the spokesperson for the family.
