he specification of highest quality materials is at the heart of every Marlow Explorer® built, both seen and unseen. For example, the specification of 316L stainless steel for cleats, chocks, stanchions, rub rails and other hardware yields provides the magnificent finish and corrosion resistance well beyond the common. In the engine room the same materials grace the exotic carbon fiber main stringers with beautiful custom-made engine mounts on premium vibration isolators by Trelleborg. In lieu of mass-produced offthe-shelf components by hundreds of vendors, ensuring a yacht that is beautiful, durable and easy to maintain continues throughout. Far more of a Marlow is built by Marlow’s own full-time artisans in our own shops to create the fit, finish and perfect function we believe Marlow owners deserve and have come to expect. Our design, fit, seams and welds border on artwork in fit, finish, function and sheer beauty, to quote a respected maritime journalist. From the top of the mast to the custom CNC propellers, nothing escapes the eye of the bright minds at Marlow. It begins with specification of premium material but the design, care and flawless execution is what makes a Marlow shine… literally.

VIEW FROM THE PILOTHOUSE // by Skip Allen
H
as this ever happened to you? There’s not a cloud in the sky, the weather forecast is ideal and you’re out for a day on the water with your family and friends. You’re anchored on a sandbar enjoying a picnic lunch, the kids are bobbing in the water, and minutes after your second cousin visiting from Ohio makes his first attempt at saltwater fishing, you’re patiently untangling the knotted wad of expensive fishing line lying in the bottom of your boat. “No problem, Joe. Have another beer.” Just then, a gust of wind strains the anchor line and you notice the sky has become cloudy. Within what seems like only minutes, the gust turns into wind, flashes of lightning strike in the distance and your sandbar-oasis is in the direct path of a thunderstorm. When you’ve been boating in South Florida as long as I have, you’ve encountered thunderstorms while boating at least once in your life. No matter how much you check the weather report, it’s almost a given that inclement weather will interfere with or at least alter your boating plans at one time in your boating experience. The key is to prepare for that eventuality, and the fi rst place to start is by educating yourself about various weather scenarios, such as thunderstorms. Dr. Ed Brotak, a frequent contributor to our “Sea Watch” column, is a retired meteorology professor who frequently writes about agricultural meteorology and climatology. Turn to page 20 to learn more about all kinds of thunderstorms so that it’s not such a surprise should you be caught in one while boating.
If you hang around the yacht club long enough, you’ll hear someone say, “There are only three kinds of skippers: those who have run aground, those who will run aground and those that have and won’t admit it.” I admit that I am of the fi rst category and have run aground. It happened before I was old enough to have a driver’s license but already had a 13-foot Boston Whaler that my dad let me use. We lived in Miami Beach and at the time, my dad was vice president of sales and marketing for Bertram Yachts. Sometimes he’d ask my brother, Rick, and me to take boats out to test them. One day, I was making my way in the Whaler behind what was then Dodge Island, and I saw a bird floating on the water. Being a kid, I decided to chase the bird with the boat. But when I got closer, the bird stood up and I discovered that the water was very shallow. I went aground and the motor kicked up. Needless to say, I was very embarrassed. I must have learned from it, though, since I can’t remember ever running aground again. Mistakes can be valuable if you learn the lessons they teach. Here at Southern Boating we’ve learned a few lessons over the 45+ years we’ve been boating and in business, and we’re happy to share them with you. We’d love to hear about the boating lessons you’ve learned so that we can share them with our readers. Just maybe, we’ll be able to save a young boater from running aground.

I have enjoyed reading your magazine since I moved to Florida 11 years ago. I was especially happy to see the article in your February issue entitled “Islands United” about the Turks and Caicos; however, there is no mention of the island of Grand Turk. My family is from Grand Turk and my great-great grandfather, Jeremiah D. Murphy, was a well-known deep-sea diver who resided there in the 1800s. Grand Turk does not have all the amenities of the Caicos Islands. It does have beautiful beaches, friendly people, historical sites, salt ponds, great diving, fishing, whale watching, and the Turks and Caicos National Museum. I encourage your readers to visit and enjoy the wonderful island of Grand Turk. Dennis R. Murphy Jensen Beach, FL
Dear Skip, I just read your article and wanted you to know, Navionics does not use cell service or Wi-Fi. It runs off the satellites in the sky, and you can be 100 miles off shore and it works like a champ. It is a great app to have on your phone and it can be updated daily. And I have found it be very, very accurate in the U.S. and The Bahamas. Robert Zirpoli Virginia Beach, VA Publisher’s response: You are correct, Robert. Mobile devices with GPS capability work without Wi-Fi or cellular connection, but connection is required to download and update charts. Glad to hear the app is serving you well.

THE STATE OF YOUR PLANET’S LAKES, RIVERS AND OCEANS
Beware the Storm Know the threats of thunderstorms and how to reduce your risk.
A
lthough thunderstorms can occur any time of the year, as the weather gets warmer and more humid, they peak in activity. The South is a hotbed for thunderstorms, and while most locations record more than 50 storms a year, some areas of Southwest Florida get over 100! As one of nature’s most potent hazards, the threats from thunderstorms are multiple. A lightning strike, even an indirect hit, can kill or seriously injure a person, destroy the electronics on a boat or, even worse, start a fi re. Winds can shift 180 degrees in seconds, and wind speeds can top 50 knots. The combination of strong winds and the waves they generate can capsize large vessels.
Thunderstorm types There are a number of thunderstorm types, but for our purposes here, we’ll touch on forced and non-forced convection storms. Forced convection storms occur particularly in the fall and spring and are associated with pronounced weather systems, such as cold fronts or low-pressure areas. They can even happen during winter in more southern locations. The
storms themselves tend to be stronger especially in terms of wind and often evolve into squall lines that make them difficult to navigate. They can form any time of day and move very quickly over ground, sometimes more than 50 knots. Squall lines are groups of storms and are often accompanied by high wind and heavy rain. The non-forced, typical “pop-up” thunderstorms of summer (also known as air-mass thunderstorms) develop over land during the heat of the afternoon and early evening. They often form along the sea breeze front as it pushes inland during the day. Although not typically strong, summer thunderstorms in the south tend to be prodigious lightning producers. Only moderately gusty winds are expected with a pop-up storm, but when severe, known as a pulse storm, winds can develop in excess of 50 knots. At night, the land cools off and storms over land tend to dissipate, but the water remains warm, and an offshore flowing land breeze can develop. Storms that have moved over the water can maintain themselves, and even new storms can develop over the warm waters into the morning. Generally

Prepare and beware This may seem like common sense to experienced boaters, but before you head out on your boat, check the forecast. Be sure to also check the most current weather radar image. This is the best way to tell if thunderstorms have already developed and may be a threat. Tracking the storms for a time will indicate the direction and speed of movement. Newer displays even depict individual lightning strikes utilizing either land or satellite-based sensors. If there is a significant thunderstorm threat, cancel your trip or at least postpone it until conditions improve. Once you’re on your way, continue to monitor the weather as you go. As mentioned, thunderstorms can develop and move quickly. If you have onboard radar, check it, and as the saying goes, “Keep an eye to the sky.”
speaking, thunderstorms over water are weaker than those over land, but that doesn’t mean they can’t produce hazardous conditions. Storms moving off the land over the water would pose the greatest risk to mariners.

REGIONAL REPORT
BAHAMAS by Noelle Nicolls
Playing the Right Cards demonstrates that Bahamian boaters are eager to explore their islands and play in their own aquatic backyard, and it supports the idea that a strong domestic boating industry is a good thing for the travel trade on the whole. “When we came up with the idea, we were feeling like there was nothing to do recreationally with boats other than beaching on Rose Island: ninety percent of my boating experience is jumping on a boat and going to Rose Island,” says Shane Freeman, one of the founders of the Bahamas Poker Run. “It is certainly not something I take for granted. I mean Rose Island has amazing beaches, it is a lot of fun and only twenty minutes away from Nassau, but we have an entire archipelago available to us.” Set for May 12, 2018, Bahamas Poker Run is expected to draw at least five dozen local boats to caravan cruise through the Exuma Cays. Last year the event had over 50 boats and 300 participants. It follows the standard poker run format: each boat draws a card at various stops along the route and compares hands at the end of the day. Winners receive cash and in-kind prizes. The winning hand received $500 cash last year. Organizers hope to grow the prize-winning pot with the jump in interest from sponsors. “The run down through the cays is probably one of the

RECREATIONAL BOATING IN THE BAHAMAS is not exclusive to international boaters, but it is certainly sustained by this category of tourist. In 2016, over 80,000 people visited The Bahamas on yachts or private boats to enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of the archipelago. That is almost a third of The Bahamas’ entire adult population. Many Bahamians are involved in commercial fishing, vessel management and boat chartering, but there is a comparatively small population of recreational boaters. Bahamians almost never see themselves in the ubiquitous marketing images of yachts, sailboats and speed boats loving up the islands, and many young Bahamians can barely muster the dream of owning their own boat. The cost seems far too out of reach, and the world of boating seems like a place they don’t belong. Recreational boating events like the annual Bahamas Poker Run challenge this representation. In just two years, the event has arguably become the biggest domestic boating event in The Bahamas according to participants and marina operators who host stops along the way. Viral images of the poker run show a local boating community that actually exists; it's much larger and more diverse than one might assume, and it's active. The event

things I enjoy the most; no matter how many times I do it, it always blows me away,” says Freeman. “You are running so close to the shore; the water is so blue, so clear and so shallow. It is not one straight shot like you are driving on a long highway. You are making curves to the left and right as you navigate the right path through the banks. That, for me, is one of the coolest things. A lot of people comment on that because they have never been able to do it before.” It usually takes an experienced captain to navigate the labyrinth of shifting sands and shallow seas on the inside of the Exuma chain. Many private craft owners don’t trust
themselves to make this run alone. On the poker run, in just one day, local boaters get a guided tour on their own boat, and they get to see all of the marinas and popular attractions, including the little-known Exuma Land and Sea National Park, a first of its kind. “The best thing is getting an email two or three weeks later from a boater saying they returned on their own because they had the GPS coordinates from the run. It is one thing to hear about the beautiful attractions in the Exumas, to see the photos of swimming pigs on Instagram or the beaches in magazines,” says Jordan Lampkin, co-founder of the event. “It is a whole different thing to physically get there and look at it. The pictures and video don’t match what it is to be there in person. The reality surpasses what you would expect from the images ten-fold.” Last year, the poker run started in Highbourne Cay and stopped in Norman’s Cay, Compass Cay and Warderick Wells, headquarters for Bahamas National Trust (BNT) park wardens. Although they hope to expand the poker run to

other islands, the directors say every year that there will be a poker run in the Exumas. Carolyn Cartwright, manager at Highbourne Cay, says the arrival of boats at the Highbourne Cay Marina creates an
entertaining spectacle for marina and hotel guests. Boats of all shapes and sizes come in by the dozens, including last year’s standout boats: a 39-foot Cigarette with two 520-hp Mercury engines, a 39-foot Nortech boat with four 350-hp Mercury engines and a 38-foot Fountain with three 275-hp Mercury engines. “We support the event because it supports the BNT and the Ranfurly Home for Children,” says Cartwright. “Kevin [Cartwright] is a council member on the BNT. They are really underfunded even though they are responsible for managing all of the national parks. They rely on private donations, and anything that can be done to help them out is a good thing. We need to protect the environment down here. Our guests get curious about the event, so it brings to their attention that the Bahamas National Trust is a nonprofit organization that relies on donations,” she says. Last year, each organization received a $2,500 cash donation. pokerrunbahamas.com

Antigua Sailing Week Launches into Second Half-Century
THE GRANDDADDY OF CARIBBEAN REGATTAS kicks off its next half-century of competition and camaraderie when the 51st Antigua Sailing Week (ASW) sets sail April 24-May 4. On the water, the Club Class returns after its successful debut last year. This class is open to sailors who want to compete in the regatta yet not take their racing too seriously. Correspondingly, there’s a reduced entry fee for this class and scoring is based
Snapper Tiradito, Lionfish Ceviche and Wahoo Sashimi are a few of the new seafood dishes served at the Anse Chastanet Resort’s Treehouse restaurant near Soufriére, St. Lucia. The novel menu titled Balawoo, for the Creole name of a small local fish, embraces a sea-to-plate philosophy in concert with local fishermen that comes to life with the help of Chef Allen Susser, a consultant to the Caribbean property who ran his self-named Chef Allen’s for more than 20 years in Aventura, Florida. Other popular choices include a whole fish of the day roasted in a banana leaf and, during the island’s lobster season from August through February, Grilled Local Spiny Lobster with Passion Fruit Butter. Additionally, guests staying at the resort who come back with their own catch after a day of charter sports fishing can get their fish deliciously prepared by Treehouse chefs. ansechastanet.com
B.V.I. on the Rebound Several of the B.V.I.’s favorite cruiser beach bars are open for business in the wake of back-toback catastrophic hurricanes last fall. A sampling on the different islands includes the Cow Wreck Bar & Grill on Anegada; Leverick Foxy Bay’s Bar & Restaurant in North Callwood Sound, Virgin Gorda; Myett’s in Cane Garden Bay, Tortola; the Pirate’s Bight on Norman Island; and on Jost Van Dyke, the Soggy Dollar Bar (home of the original Painkiller), Ivan’s Stress Free Bar and Foxy’s Tamarind Bar, which celebrated its 50 th anniversary in March. “The Bar kicked off the season with its famous New Year’s Eve Party, which drew a crowd of 2,000 people, proving that the B.V.I. is indeed, making a comeback,” says Justine Callwood, daughter of Foxy Callwood. Recovery is taking longer for the B.V.I.’s larger sailing resorts, such as the Bitter End Yacht Club where more than 50 buildings, including the clubhouse, were destroyed. “We are closed for the winter, spring and summer seasons of 2018 and are focused now on remediation, re-envisioning and rebuilding and began working with an architectural firm in January,” says John Glynn, vice president of sales and marketing. “Right after the storm, we went into fundraising mode and have raised more than $100,000 in relief funds so far for the Virgin Gorda community. While the Bitter End isn’t open for business, other businesses in the area are, and the North Sound remains as beautiful as ever for cruising.” bvitourism.com.

More than 100 entries are expected with everything from a Volvo Ocean 70 and Melges 24 to a Gunboat 60. There are also several sleek yachts available for race charter with or without skippers, including Dream Yacht Charter’s Antigua fleet: Sun Odyssey 379s and 519s, a Dufour 405 and a couple of Oceanis 41.1s. On land, spectators get in on the fun, too, says ASW’s commercial director Alison Sly-Adams. “This includes watching the action from the Shirley Heights lookout, where on Sunday, April 29th, the restaurant serves its famous local-style breakfast. It’s also possible to head out on a catamaran to literally ‘Chase the Race’ and see the action up close for a couple of hours followed by a leisurely lunch and snorkel. Events like the nightly parties, lay day beach party and final awards ceremony are free and open to the public.” sailingweek.com

Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival Festival held this year April 13-22. The theme is “SEA America, a Celebration of America’s Treasures.” Artists will use about 1,000 tons of sand that they will mix with water and pack into big wooden forms to create surface tension. They create their sculptures with trowels and other tools, including toothpicks for those very fine details. The centerpiece of the show is the Sugar Sand Walk Exhibit under a cool 21,000-square-foot beach tent. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for adults over 55, military personnel, police officers, firefighters, and teachers (I.D. required), and $6 for students up to age 17. Artists go to work on April 14th. The festival features free activities, too, such as a children’s play area, street musicians and performers, craft displays, fireworks, and sculpture demonstrations. Boaters can tie up at Clearwater Beach Marina and walk to the festival on the beach. And, in the typically calm waters here, many boaters just drop anchor outside the swim zone then paddle or putt-putt to shore. sugarsandfestival.com
THEY SAY THE SAND ON CLEARWATER BEACH is the best on the Gulf Coast, if not the world. It’s a very fine, sugary quartz crystal brought to what is now Florida’s Eastern Gulf Coast shoreline by rushing, ancient rivers. The rivers are long gone, but the sand is still there and every April, the sand gets shaped into “sandtastic” sculptures at the Pier 60 Sugar Sand
Songbirds Are Coming Home
We know swallows come back to Capistrano every year—an old song tells us that—but Gulf Coast birders hum their own songs every spring when warblers, orioles, grosbeaks, tanagers, and many other migrating flocks come back from their winter homes in Mexico, Central America and South America. The melody makers wing it over hundreds of miles of the Gulf of Mexico until they reach land. They’re looking for trees and brush, bugs and berries. Birders and binoculars are waiting. Expensive cameras on tripods are pre-focused and hoping rapid-fire shutters capture a birding magazine cover.
Nourished again, the migrating birds fly out to points north where the summer weather is most suitable. Their instincts tell them where to go and primarily follow one of four major flyways—Pacific, Central, Mississippi, and Atlantic—where the weather suits their feathers. So where, exactly, are the best viewing areas on the Gulf Coast? Audubon Club websites for various gulf coast areas have it nailed. Fort DeSoto Park at the entrance to Tampa Bay is a biggie. Also, check out birding festivals in late April and May. Corpus Christi, which owns the moniker of America’s “Birdiest City,” puts on the “Birdiest Festival” April 20-23. Stabilize – At Any Size
Whether your boat is small or yacht-sized, adding a stabilizer may make seasickness a thing of the past. By L.N. Evans
W
aves make boats rock and roll, even in relatively calm conditions. For centuries, mariners have endured the pitch, roll and yaw and the seasickness they produce. The only way to get over the nausea was to get off the boat and onto land until it passed. But thanks to technology, ingenuity and inventors’ commitment to “build a better mousetrap,” new products have been developed that counteract the forces of nature. There are a number of companies that manufacture boat stabilization systems. We recently learned about developments from two of them that are making waves (pardon the pun) in the industry. Both products can be installed on new boats, or they can be retrofitted onto an existing boat by a technician recommended by the manufacturer. In other words, there’s no excuse to continue exposing you or your guests to the dreaded mal de mer.
Seakeeper 2 Recently released at the 2018 Miami International Boat Show, Seakeeper’s newest model is the smallest of their models to date. According to the manufacturer, the Seakeeper 2 is designed to eliminate up to 95 percent of boat roll on boats as small as 27 feet LOA. “The Seakeeper 2 is the fi rst of our products to reach down into the 20-foot boat market, and we will continue to expand into new areas to ultimately change the way the world
Seakeeper 2
boats,” says Seakeeper Chief Operating Officer Andrew Semprevivo in a press release. “We have a relentless drive of bringing stabilization to the masses.” The unit will utilize the newly designed touchscreen control panel with an intuitive user interface and allow users to capture real-time performance information. The Seakeeper 2 is 25 percent lighter (414 lbs.) and 22 percent smaller (24.8"L x 25.5"W x 20"H) than the next smallest model, the Seakeeper 3. Consequently, the unit’s small size allows for a number of installation configurations depending on the boat model. Many consumers, for example, opt for a leaning post replacement since it can be installed without any major structural modifications. The demand for the Seakeeper 2 is expected to be significant. As a result, the Mohnton, Pennsylvania, factory was expanded to meet the increased demand, and shipments are anticipated to start this month. The Seakeeper 2 will run exclusively on 12-volt DC power and costs $22,700. Seakeeper, Inc. was founded in 2003 and sold their fi rst gyro stabilizer in 2008.
Gyro Gale Tab-Fin This family-owned and operated company based in Stuart, Florida, was founded in 1976. Gyro Gale manufactures airoperated gyro stabilizers that use external fi ns to divert water in order to stabilize the boat. Traditionally, fi ns have been a single foil that only drives the water in one direction; however, the basic principle of marine stabilization is to quickly and efficiently push against the water to provide lift. Gyro Gale spent five years developing a fi n that would divert the water not only faster and better, but also drive it more efficiently. The Gyro Gale Tab-Fin is a two-part fi n that’s hinged and enables driving the water in two directions as opposed to just one. The tab is mechanically connected at the end of the fi n and rotates on a pivot point. The Tab-Fin creates three times the amount of lift as compared with a traditional fi n of equal size. “Traditional fi ns are a single foil that only drive the water in one direction. Ours drives the water in two directions,” explains Zeyad Metwally, Gyro-Gale Stabilizer’s vice president of engineering.

“So, if you’re in five-foot seas and taking waves directly on the beam, you’ll fi nd the Tab-Fin system is not only going to stop the roll faster but also smoother. We’re driving water in two directions so it’s more effective and creates a high amount of lift.” Metwally says the benefits to the Tab-Fin are many. Since they work more efficiently, the fi ns no longer need to deflect as much water in order to generate the required lift, so there’s no added drag and stress on the hull. The fi ns also do not need to be as large. Furthermore, most boats with traditional fi ns can easily be upgraded to the new Tab-Fins. For skeptics, the proof is in the feedback from delighted— and seasick-free—customers. Metwally says the Gyro-Gale Tab-Fin has been installed on at least 15 boats ranging in size from 42 to 82 feet LOA. The owner of an 80-foot Lazarra upgraded to the Tab-Fin system and noticed an immediate improvement in performance on his two-week, 1,400 nm

Sometimes, the simple solutions work the best.

Ditch the Wires
Wireless control and monitoring with Power-Pole’s all-in-one marine tablet By Doug Thompson
R
emember when wireless technology was unproven, unreliable and untrustworthy? That was a long time ago and now, wireless is the only way to go. Then when Bluetooth came along, we embraced its one-to-one connectivity, and it’s become one of the most important tools on land and sea today. For example, when your smartphone connects by Bluetooth to your boat’s audio system… presto, and you have music! As technology has evolved, that one-to-one connectivity has now become too limited and boat owners want more. The C-Monster 2.0 wireless protocol developed by JL Marine, the parent company of Power-Pole brand products, offers wireless multi-point connections and display with its VISION tablet. “We developed our own wireless communication with a different frequency,” says Curt Hill, advertising manager for Power-Pole, based in Tampa, where all the research, development and production takes place. “The reason we did that is because Bluetooth is a one-to-one connection, and while Wi-Fi has multi-point connectivity, it’s not strong enough to go through wet aluminum decks.” The VISION tablet measures seven inches wide, runs on the Android platform for full web access and is NMEA 2000 capable. It is powered by the boat’s 12-volt cranking battery and has a line-of-sight range of up to 100 meters. That means
the signal strength is 10 times stronger than Wi-Fi and does not require a router. The tablet is one of two new products introduced by PowerPole last fall. The other is the CHARGE Marine Power Station that won a 2017 IBEX Innovation Award. It’s an AC/DC and bi-directional DC/DC all-in-one marine battery management and charger system. Captains can customize the C-Monster app to wirelessly control all connected accessories, such as trim tabs, the jack plate, bilge pump, livewell, lights, and sound. In addition, all Android apps, such as fishing and navigation apps, can run through the VISION tablet as well as apps from Navionics and Mercury’s SmartCraft app. “My idea for the future of our product is going to be on larger boats and yachts,” explains Hill. “Instead of thousands of feet of wire running throughout the yacht, you can put these control modules all over the boat and control different things with a tablet. This product is going to work at the OEM level and for re-wire projects.” Power-Pole first developed the product for its anchor line. The Power-Pole shallow water anchors allow anglers to stop and hold their boat quickly with the touch of a button. Company founder John Oliverio and the JL Marine engineering team first started working on the C-Monster

protocol five-plus years ago to control the Power-Pole anchors, and now the 2.0 version is offering many more applications, including the VISION tablet. “For a re-wire project, it’s going to save a lot of time and effort and has other benefits,” Hill adds. “If you have a big fishing boat, then you have livewells that you want to re-circulate all the time. But having them on full power kills your 12-volt battery too fast. Our product offers a dimmer switch, so you can dim down the livewell variably and save power.” The high bright screen on the VISION tablet is easy to see in full sun from any angle, even when wearing polarized sunglasses. The unit features daylight and nighttime settings, and enhanced map viewing technology allows the user to clearly see maps and satellite imagery. The enhanced imagery will also allow the user to see how the shoreline differs from the grass line. Another feature is the swipe-down Water Shade, which protects and locks the screen against water spray that might activate or change screen settings while running or in the rain. The VISION unit is water resistant, rated at IP67, has three mounting options (flush, gimbal, and ram), and the built-in camera allows hands-free photos of you holding that big catch. “There are inputs and outputs,” Hill says. “The inputs read things like your fuel gauge and trim position, and you can show all that on the screen. You can set up as many screens as you want and just swipe to the next screen. All the pinch-and-swipe functions work the same way.” To simplify tasks that require two or more steps, the VISION offers a multi-function button to control a host of tasks at one time. For example, you can set up a “Take Off” button that could stow your Power-Pole anchors, lower the engine trim and deploy the trim tabs to a predetermined setting so you are ready for a quick hole shot. “Most of today’s motors, trim tabs and jackplates already have the trim sensors built in,” Hill says. “All that is ready to rig up, and once you get it connected to the VISION, you are ready to go.” The VISION system will retail for $1,595 when it goes on sale later this year, and that includes the VISION tablet and one six-bank control module. Additional control modules will be available separately. power-pole.com

DO IT YOURSELF //
You’re Grounded! Now What?
Know the ABCs of re-floating your boat after going aground. By Frank Lanier
featuring props and rudders extending below the hull. If your boat is more likely to experience damage when grounding— or while trying to unground it—your plan needs to take that into consideration.
Grounding checklist
M
ost boaters have heard the saying: “You’ve either already gone aground or will go aground!” If you’re in the second category, knowing what to do immediately after grounding can make the difference between an embarrassing discussion at the yacht club Tiki bar and a harrowing tale on par with the Poseidon Adventure. While every grounding will have its own nuances to deal with, the following tips should help in most any situation.
Have a grounding action plan in place Trying to decide what to do after grounded wastes time, which may be running out if the tide is falling or if other circumstances (weather, waves, etc.) can worsen your situation. Quick, decisive action may save the day with only a few scratches to your hull and ego. When developing your plan, consider the extra items you may need (easily portable anchor and rode, etc.) based on the type of boat you have. A full keel sailboat, for example, is less susceptible to damage than a power boat
TIDAL AND CURRENT FLOW INFORMATION Tidal and current fl ow information is broadcast on VHF weather channels and is also readily available on most modern chart plotters. Observing current fl ow and tide lines ashore or on a fi xed navigational aid are also good ways to check the local state of the tide. There are also apps aplenty for tablets and smart phones.
1. Check for damage. The fi rst thing to do after grounding is to place the engine in neutral—or drop all sails—and inspect the bilges to see if your boat is taking on water. Next, try to determine if you’ve sustained damage to the hull or running gear, paying particular attention to stuffi ng boxes, thru-hulls, etc. Even if there’s no apparent damage, monitor the bilges once ungrounded and while underway or back at the dock. 2. Check bottom type. Knowing what you’ve grounded on (rock, soft mud, hard sand, coral, etc.) will help determine the best course of action to free yourself. If you’re not sure, bottom information can be found on your charts or possibly determined by scooping up a sample with your anchor. 3. Verify the tide. Knowing the state of the tide is crucial after grounding. A soft grounding during a rising tide may mean the best option is to simply wait. Grounding on a falling tide means you’ll have less time to extricate yourself before the water level drops. 4. Locate deeper water. Don’t automatically assume deeper water is behind you. If you’ve grounded on a shoal or reef, the closest deep water may lie in front of you. In some areas, you can read water depth by color, but in less clear waters, quickly take soundings around the boat using a lead line or maybe a long boat hook. You may also be able to use your dinghy to survey the water around your boat; outfitting it with a fi xed or handheld depth sounder will be a big help.
Float your boat When considering what action to take after grounding, keep the sage advice of ol’ Hippocrates in mind: “First, do no harm.” For a hard grounding where you’ve struck a reef or rocky bottom and sustained significant damage, staying put until professional help arrives is typically the best approach as freeing a damaged boat could easily result in sinking once deeper water is reached. For soft groundings with little or no damage, the following tactics may help get you afloat.

3/14/18 5:55 PM
Why take on the hassles and extra expense of travel to The Bahamas? Power off. Attempting to power off is probably the fi rst
reaction after grounding. If you gently slid up onto a shoal bow fi rst, you may be able to power off in reverse (back the way you came) until you reach deeper water. Moving passengers from side to side or swinging the rudder from port to starboard while backing down may roll your boat enough to break free. Boats with twin engines can also alternate bursts of throttle between port to starboard engines while reversing to amplify this side-to-side motion. Always check your boat’s orientation before trying to back off. It could have spun around after hitting bottom, or, due to the effects of wind and tide, your stern may be angled toward shallow water instead. If you struck the shoal at an angle, you may be able to power off by turning the rudder hard toward deeper water and throttling up in an effort to spin the bow back toward it. Twin engine boats can try to spin the bow by placing the engine closest to deeper water into reverse and the other in forward (once you’re sure your props are clear of the bottom). If your running gear extends below the keel or could be touching bottom in any of the above situations, you’ll want to try other tactics to minimize damage. Depending on wind speed and direction, sailboats may be able to heel the boat over by hoisting the main. Heeling reduces draft and breaks suction, which, when combined with the thrust of the engine, may do the trick. Drop some pounds. If it’s safe, loading people or heavier items into the dinghy can often reduce your draft enough to free your boat. Other options include emptying water tanks or using your dinghy to ferry items ashore. Sometimes simply launching the dinghy can make the difference. How about a lift? You may be able to use wave action or the wake from a passing boat to lift your boat clear enough to power into deeper water. The trick is timing bursts of the throttle in the right direction as the boat lifts clear of the bottom. For this to work, you have to know where deeper water is and your running gear has to be clear of the bottom. This method should not be used if you are aground on a hard or rocky bottom. Consider kedging. This involves setting an anchor in deeper water and then trying to winch the boat free, typically in conjunction with thrust from the engine. It’s easier with smaller boats—where you can easily throw a small anchor toward deeper water—but is more difficult for larger vessels with heavier ground tackle. In this case, the safest deployment method is often using the dinghy to ferry out the anchor.
Whatever your action plan, personnel and vessel safety should be paramount. If there are extenuating circumstances (deteriorating weather, threat of sinking, etc.) don’t hesitate to call for professional help from a commercial towing company or to notify the U.S. Coast Guard.

e kicked up the tempo for this year’s Annual Swimsuit Edition with some high octane aquatic toys and boats courtesy of Nautical Ventures based in South Florida. Even before our models and crew landed on Bimini in The Bahamas for the dizzying two-day photoshoot, we knew this year would be something incredible. And incredible, it was. From a few hours before sunrise until well after dark, it was all hands on deck for make-up and lighting, cameras and props, boats and bathing suit changes. But it all came together thanks to our three lovely models who were more than game to try out every paddleboard, flyboard, slide, or boat we asked them to. Bimini is a mere 50 miles from the Florida coast, but it feels a world away. Approaching by sea or by air, the water color changes from one shade of blue to another and the beauty emerges. Bimini is home to colorful history, picturesque landscapes, unrivaled fishing grounds, and our gracious host, the lavish Resorts World Bimini, whose marinas, pools and private beaches served as our own personal playground. If you have yet to cross the Gulf Stream to Bimini, join us here, if only in your minds-eye, and partake in the adventure and energy by voting for your favorite photo at southernboating.com/swim-poll.

WATERSPORTS WONDERLAND Nautical Ventures creates a boating toyland. By Steve Davis
W
herever you fi nd a lake, a river or an ocean, playing on the water can have a physical and spiritual effect that makes people smile and creates lifelong memories. Just as with our annual swimsuit issue, boats and toys enhance that fun, and Nautical Ventures is where you can fi nd it all. Getting its start 31 years ago as a Hobie kayak and sailboat dealer, Nautical Ventures grew, and it was in 2010 when Roger Moore and Jeff Garcia purchased the store believing that water sports equipment would complement their yacht brokerage business, QPS Marine. Having sailed around the world with his wife, Samantha, Moore fi nally set anchor in Fort Lauderdale and lives on an 84-foot Northern Marine expedition yacht. Garcia grew up in a family-owned shipyard, soon owning the Nautor Swan sailing charter fleet in St. Martin and making a name retrofitting pre-owned yachts in the French West Indies. After time as a project manager at Derecktor Shipyards, he joined Moore in 2007. Needless to say, they know boats. Over the years, Nautical Ventures has grown exponentially with the expansion of product lines that now include yacht tenders, pleasure and fishing boats, and a wide array of yacht-related toys and equipment. With that growth, “We have been able to attract experienced staff to run each division of products that allows us to be knowledgeable in

each department: kayaks, sailboats, yacht tenders, yacht toys, etc.,” says Moore. “In 2013, we expanded to include new boat sales via Nautical Ventures Marine, and we are now a leading dealer for Axopar, Blackfi n, Century, Chapman Transition, Glastron, Highfield tenders, Novurania, Ranger Tugs, Release fishing boats, and Schaefer Yachts.” With a new, 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art retail and service facility located on the water in Dania Beach, Florida, Nautical Ventures is able to provide the marine community with a pleasurable buying and service experience. That experience reaches to their North Palm Beach location that includes a 66-unit dry stack marina as well as the Riviera Beach store adjacent to the renovated Riviera Beach Marina Complex. “My joy comes from the growth of the company and the people we have attracted to it,” says Moore. “We started with about nine employees and now have close to ninety-two. Watching them grow, personally and professionally, to meet the challenges of our rapid growth has been most rewarding. In addition, we have developed a culture of trust and respect for each other as well as with the customers who come here. Yes, we need to sell products, but we want to sell the right product to meet the customers’ needs.” Nautical Ventures provided the boats and toys for Southern Boating’s 2018 Annual Swimsuit feature, which are highlighted here. nauticalventures.com

Steady As She The debut of Horizon Power Catamaran’s new flagship inspires “ooohs”and “aaahs” from… well, everyone! By Steve Davis

T
he saying “Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder” is apropos when it comes to boats and especially when builders add a new model to their fleet. So, when I stepped on board the new Horizon Power Catamaran PC74—the builder’s new flagship—after its debut at the Miami Boat Show, I put myself in the mindset of not only a marine journalist but also as other “beholders.” As a former yacht charter captain, I was reminded of one important requirement for guests: multiple comfortable spaces. A wide-open salon and galley, roomy accommodations with separate entries, plenty of space on the swim platform, a wide bow for sunning, a large flybridge helm, and sundeck all translate into plenty of room for a family to play and relax. And during our sea trial back to Fort Lauderdale from the Miami Yacht Show, there was no doubt the PC74 has the design, power, grace, and comfort to satisfy any charter guest, family member, crewmember, and anyone else who steps on board. We headed out Miami’s Government Cut in an outgoing tide with a steep headwind chop, and the vessel’s seaworthiness was immediately put to the test. Maneuvering through the six- to eight-foot waves on the bow made for an exciting departure, and once out, this new addition to Horizon’s power catamaran fleet handled the swell combined with 15- to 18-knot winds on the starboard beam with ease and control. “Cats inherently have a lot of stability,” says Stuart Hegerstrom, founder and director of Horizon Power Catamarans. One essential focus of Horizon’s PC series’ design “is to give an owner peace of mind at sea,” he says and adds that each model has to have fantastic seakeeping and must be able to outrun a storm. “Typically, hurricanes come across at 15 to 18 knots average, so at the least, the boat has to do 20 knots and do it in most conditions.” That’s where years of design hard knocks, lots of tank testing and on-water trials paid off. With 30-plus years of hull development in both monohull and catamaran, sail and power configurations, naval architect Angelo Lavranos created Horizon’s unique semi-displacement hull. “Displacement boats are designed to go their hull speed, which is when your bow wave and your stern wave coincide and become one big wave,” explains Hegerstrom. “The boat is trapped in this wave pattern and can’t climb out of it.” To allow the PC74 to break through its hull speed (about 11 knots), Lavranos designed the bow with a very sharp entry before it widens for the keel and follows with a rocker that levels into a flat transom, a true planing surface. “To reduce draft, we put a tunnel in the aft portion of the hull with the prop and rudder recessed into it,” says Hegerstrom. In order to give the PC74 the push it needs to get up and out of its trough and into its optimal 18-knot cruising speed, twin EPA Tier 3-compliant Caterpillar C18ACERT, 1,150-hp engines were found to be the perfect size for the yacht and also allow plenty of space in the engine room for servicing. monitors provides information that’s easy to read. Two adjustable STIDD helm chairs are fl anked by a twin bench seat and twin sunning lounger. Behind the helm, a five-stool bar, positioned across from a large sofa with dining table for up to 10, includes two freezers, fridge, icemaker, sink, and TV. The open aft area provides access to a dayhead, barbecue area and room
for chaise lounges or up to a 17-foot dinghy when under way. Though the helm and seating area has a hardtop enclosure (with removable aft soft enclosures), the large windows provide 360-degree viewing. Again, a room with a view. When asked why the PC74 is a perfect choice, Hegerstrom suggests, “Look at the key points of what makes a catamaran a suitable cruising yacht. You have the inherent built-in stability; it’s far more comfortable at sea. Its seakeeping capabilities are comparable to a hundred-foot yacht, so you’re buying yourself comfort at sea and seakeeping at sea that’s comparable to a boat twice the price or at least 70 to 80 percent more expensive. Then you have the efficiency of the boat,” he continues. “A comparable motoryacht’s going to have C32s in it, so you’re burning at least fifty percent less fuel. Then you have the maneuverability because with the motors being

so far apart, you can spin the boat on her own axis. With the thrusters, you can walk her sideways. It’s very easy to operate; you don’t need a highly-skilled, trained captain to manage the boat. If you have a few weeks’ experience on the boat, you become quite comfortable very quickly,” he says. “And then there’s the space. You really feel you can live on the boat. There’s lots of privacy.”
After experiencing the PC74 for myself, the real question is more like “Who isn’t this yacht designed for?” Do you fish, have a big family, need extra cabins, enjoy space, like the outside, like the inside? Quite simply, I challenge anyone who “beholds” this yacht to find anything they don’t like and even if you do, Horizon Power Catamarans can design your ultimate getaway... within reason, of course.

The Sea Force IX 41.5 Sport Center Console is a tournament-ready boat that is equally suited to be a yacht tender. By Doug Thompson

ig center consoles often must fi ll many roles—one day a serious sportfisherman, the next a shuttle tender to a yacht, then a pleasure cruiser and, after that, a dive boat with easy reboarding access. Fortunately, owners of the Sea Force IX 41.5 Sport have everything they need for those multiple roles already built into the boat. Designers of the 41.5 Sport are accustomed to drawing up much bigger vessels for the team to build at the Palmetto, Florida, facility. The Sea Force IX model lineup starts with the 41.5 Sport (41'8" LOA, 12' beam) as the fi rst in the new Performance Sport Outboard center console line and climbs up to the 131.5 Luxury Performance Skybridge Sport Yacht (131'8" LOA, 26'10" beam). “This is the smallest boat we have ever built,” explains Rick Hyer, design engineer at Sea Force IX, during the launch of the boat at the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. “Our primary market is from 81 to 94 feet with inboard sportfishing boats. Now we have ventured into this larger center console market, with a 55-footer next. The construction is all composite, all vinylester resin.” Powered by triple Yamaha 350-hp four-stroke outboard engines, the Sea Force IX 41.5 Sport is a wave crusher and offers a smooth ride in rough conditions. She also carries some heft at more than 21,000 pounds. However, with a full load and five passengers APRIL 2018 • SOUTHERNBOATING.COM • 85

she still can run to the 55-plus-mph top speed and cruise comfortably in the 40-mph range. “This is a bottom design that Sea Force IX has proven to be successful with,” says Todd Albrecht, sales and marketing manager for Sea Force IX. Prior to his current position, Albrecht had long been with Jupiter Marine, and his experience with larger center consoles helped guide Sea Force IX with its new center console line. “It has been modified to get a little more deadrise, from a traditional 17-degree deadrise to a 23-degree bottom. The boat creates lift for the entire running surface with twin lifting strakes on both sides, no steps and large chines. The faster you push the throttles, the higher it gets out of the water, and reduced wetting surface increases the fuel efficiency.” A boat this big is a prime candidate for both the Yamaha Helm Master system and the Seakeeper 5 gyro stabilizer. Both are options, but neither product was on this boat, which was hull No. 1 of the 41.5 Sport line. However, Yamaha’s service network can now add the Helm Master system after the boat is purchased. While the joystick control may be what everyone
talks about when discussing Helm Master, there’s much more to the system. Because Helm Master now works with twin, triple and quad engine setups, it’s suitable for a variety of boat types and sizes. For 2018, Yamaha added a new feature with Helm Master called SetPoint. The feature’s three modes— FishPoint, DriftPoint and StayPoint—provide even greater control for situations such as fishing, waiting for a bridge and controlled drifting. Paying homage to the builder’s fishing background, the 41.5 Sport has 20 rod holders, including rocket launchers. There’s also a 60-gallon livewell, custom outriggers, icemaker, abundant tackle storage, and a cockpit nearly big enough for a fighting chair. “We installed a diesel generator with a 30-gallon fuel tank,” Albrecht adds. “For a weeklong trip to The Bahamas, that’s going to be enough fuel to power the generator so you can run everything, including the 16,000-BTU air conditioning, which offers two additional vents plumbed to the helm area.” The two front-seat passengers and the captain ride in style on Llebroc helm chairs with footrests, while the captain looks forward to an elegant Edson wood steering wheel and twin

The Yamaha throttles and shifters are in a comfortable position for use by the pilot, and teak wood is used throughout above decks; the helm is protected by an expansive hardtop. “The hardtop arch is an aluminum frame, and then the top is cored fiberglass,” says Albrecht. “We then paint the aluminum in house. The only way to give it this custom look was to do it ourselves.” Moving down below into the cabin, the teak woodwork is completed by Hawaiian koa wood. The cabin features a dining table that lowers on an electric actuator and converts the dinette to a queen berth. The cabin also features UltraLeather for all the fabric surfaces and Staron countertops. Accessories include an AC/DC stainless steel drawer-style refrigerator, microwave and freshwater sink. systems is all easily achieved down below. A Bomar deck hatch allows for plenty of natural light and ventilation. “We considered how someone is going to use this boat. They are going to fish, but they are also going to cruise, so it needs to be a yacht-style boat,” says Albrecht. “Here in the bow you have two big, comfortable lounge seats and a nice clean anchor setup.” Sea Force IX went with the shootthrough-the-bow-style anchor design that offers a crisp look as well as shaving off overall length. “It started with our clients up north who are paying by the foot for dock space. “Having that anchor hanging is an extra foot of cost to them at the dock. It’s a cleaner look to tuck it into the bow.” Design touches such as this abound aboard the boat, including a removable swim ladder that can be deployed from either side of the aft teak platform. The ladder attachment’s strength is enhanced by building the connection directly into the hull. “We built a boat that can be customized and used for many different activities,” Albrecht states. SAINT LUCIA Charter on a volcanic island in the Lesser Antilles. By Zuzana Prochazka
A
sking someone to name five reasons to charter in St. Lucia is like asking them to give five reasons they like dessert. I mean, what’s not to like? That said, if you’re looking for points why to choose this jewel over other places in the Caribbean, here are a few that will have you packing your bags in a hurry. Best of all, the Moorings/Sunsail base offers a selection of yachts that includes large new powercats which are becoming the fastest growing segment of charter fleets around the world. You don’t have to be a sailor to enjoy this corner of paradise.
PHOTOS: THE SAINT LUCIA TOURISM BOARD
The Practicalities Because rum drinks and sunsets aren’t all there is to cruising, it’s best to check on the practicalities of your destination prior to departure. Consider things like the base facilities, provisioning and selection of available yachts. IGY’s Rodney Bay Marina is one of the most attractive, safe, modern, and friendly marinas in the Caribbean. Originally constructed in 1985, this 220-slip facility offers onsite cafés, gift shop, pool, and showers. Every December, the marina hosts the fi nish of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers that attracts more than 250 boats and 1,200 people who have just crossed the Atlantic and are ready for a little pampering. You won’t be roughing it here, either. Provisioning is easy with staples and delicacies available in every grocery store—there’s a large one in Gros Islet. We particularly enjoyed our time sampling the excellent restaurants of Gros Islet as well. Strolling along Reduit Beach looking for an appealing eatery, we couldn’t resist popping into the St. Lucia Yacht Club for a rum punch and the requisite hat.
Any Time’s a Good Time Choosing the ideal time to charter is simple with St. Lucia, which is south of the typical hurricane belt. That’s not to say there is no hurricane season here; it’s just that St. Lucia is less likely to be impacted than the Leeward Islands. Our last trip that took place in the second half of October was without incident. APRIL 2018 • SOUTHERNBOATING.COM • 89

The weather is delightful year-round. From December to May, temperatures range from 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and from June to November you can expect 75 to 95 degrees. There will be less rain in the winter, but you’ll likely experience rougher seas. In the summertime, the ocean lays flatter and the trade winds are milder, typically around 10 knots rather than 25 knots. In other words, you can consider a charter for nearly any time of year. The payoff is that you can take advantage of shoulder seasons that offer not only lower rates, but also fewer tourists to compete with for anchorage space and restaurant times.
Stunning Vistas, Stellar Cuisine The mere mention of St. Lucia evokes an image of the stunning Pitons, the twin conical peaks (volcanic plugs, actually) that are the iconic landmarks of this lush island. The town of Soufrière just below them is chock-full of colorful, camera-loving Creole buildings with gingerbread trim and New Orleans-style balconies. Anchor in Piton Bay to visit the village, or rent a car and drive the entire island for remarkable views and delicious cuisine that’s the best mix of French, Caribbean and Creole you will find anywhere. You’ll never want to cook on the boat. (continued)

We braved driving on the “wrong” side of the car—shifting with the left hand—and stopped off at Ladera Resort, a picturesque hotel built into the side of a mountain that overlooks the Pitons and serves inventive (if pricey) delicacies. Giant ferns and wild orchids greeted us at every stop around the island and although we ran out of time, I’m definitely returning to hike Soufrière, the extinct volcano that you can drive a rental car into. (Yes, all volcanoes in the Caribbean seem to be named Soufrière.) St. Lucia is the “honeymooners’ island,” and many people visit for strictly land-based vacations. Chartering offers an experience on both land and sea, taking paradise up a notch.
A
History Buffs Rejoice Like most Caribbean islands, St. Lucia survived skirmishes between the French and English on numerous occasions. For a glimpse of this, we visited Pigeon Island, a 44-acre national landmark that is the site of the ruins of Fort Rodney. Built in 1778 and named for Admiral George Brydges Rodney, in its time, the fort offered strategic views of Martinique to the north and provided the British with a peek at what the French were up to. The views of Gros Islet and the harbor below to the south are worth the climb to the top where cannons still point at the horizon, sentinels of days gone by. (continued)

Today, the site is a park with a lovely beach where one enterprising young woman cruises the shallows with her portable bar. She loads up a brightly decorated panga with fresh fruit and gallons of rum and then walks in waist-deep water pulling the barge behind her, stopping to serve fruity cocktails to beachgoers as they lounge in the warm waves— like a St. Lucia version of UberEats.
The Perfect Jump Off Point You can cruise the entire week along St. Lucia’s western coastline, stopping off to snorkel at Anse Cochon or tucking into Marigot Bay with its red-topped homes and fun stores. But one of the glorious reasons to charter a powercat from St. Lucia is that you can go north to Martinique or south to St. Vincent
and the Grenadines on a one-week charter and never feel rushed. (If you visit the Grenadines or Martinique, you’ll need to check in/out with St. Lucia’s Customs & Excise Department.) Traveling at a cruising speed of 15 knots, you’ll reach Martinique’s Grand Anse d’Arlet in just three hours and enjoy bars, restaurants and a postcard-worthy beach. Or run south along the length of St. Vincent and tuck into Admiralty Bay on Bequia in the Grenadines in less than six hours. Catch a mooring in the bay and order up fresh baguettes to arrive via the “bread man” the next morning. This lovely baker rows around the harbor every day at 6AM to deliver still-warm loaves and croissants to early risers. Visit the turtle sanctuary here and stroll along Belmont Walkway in search of the perfect lunch stop. Then cast off for the Tobago Cays, desert islets manned by “boat boys” who will arrange a fantastic beach barbeque on request. This is a Robinson Crusoe fantasyland that served as backdrop for the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. Lounging on the flybridge with a chilled glass of anything, you’re bound to see turtle heads popping up all around. A St. Lucia charter means so much more than just one island, especially on a powercat, so why limit your choices? Cruise near or far and enjoy the best of the Windward Isles. I know I’ll be back for more sun, beaches, Creole cuisine, and history. After all, when dessert is as good as the best chocolate you’ve ever had, you go back for seconds.

BOAT OF THE MONTH
Bluewater Yacht Sales presents
Max
I
mmaculately kept and crew maintained, the 2011 Cabo 40 Express Max is loaded with options and updates and is ready to deliver. This boat was used as a yacht tender since day one and was treated with the same attention and care as the main cruiser. Recent updates include a new Seakeeper 5 Gyro Stabilizer, which eliminates the effects of rough seas and helps to ensure a comfortable day on the water, a new Northern Lights 16 kW generator and completed service on both the engines and pods. The Cummins QSC 8.3 600-hp engines and Zeus pod drives ensure plenty of power with exceptional maneuverability. The custom Bausch American Tower and Rupp outriggers draw immediate attention to the boat’s sportfish design. The cockpit contains two fish boxes, a Bluewater fighting chair, S P E C I F I C AT I O N S a transom livewell, a freezer LOA: 40' on the port side, and a sink on Beam: 15' 9" the starboard side. The airMax Draft: 3' 5" conditioned command deck has Displacement: 29,000 lbs. custom rod storage, extensive Power: Twin Cummins Garmin electronics and three QSC 8.3 600-hp
STIDD helm chairs. The extra helm chair and wraparound seating ensure that guests have plenty of room away from the elements. Below deck is the galley with a ceramic twoburner cooktop, sink and refrigerator/freezer. The added space allowed by the pod drives allows for a stateroom, convertible couch and bed and a stand-up head. While many boats of similar size and style only sleep two, this boat comfortably sleeps four. It is evident that the previous owner paid serious attention to this boat and made sure that it stayed in prime condition with continuous updates, services and additions. For someone looking for a fishing vessel with all the comforts of a larger yacht, Max is the perfect match.

EVINRUDE WILL BE INDUCTED INTO THE SPACE TECHNOLOGY HALL OF FAME during the Space Foundation’s 34th Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on April 19th. As a 2018 Organization Inductee, Evinrude will be honored for the company’s role in commercializing the high-strength, wear-resistant aluminum alloy (NASA 398) originally developed and patented by NASA scientists Jonathan A. Lee and Dr. Po-Shou Chen. Chen, Lee and the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center will also be honored at this year’s event. “Evinrude is thrilled to be recognized alongside some of NASA’s most innovative scientists,” says Tracy Crocker, senior vice president and general manager of Evinrude. “For over 100 years, Evinrude has been at the cutting edge of innovation to ensure our technology gives customers the best experience on the water. Incorporating NASA 398 into our E-TEC engines has enabled us to build quieter, lighter and cleaner engines so boaters can get the best fuel economy while limiting their impact on the environment and preserving our waters for future generations to enjoy.” NASA 398 is stronger than industry-standard piston materials while significantly reducing overall engine weight. Evinrude’s E-TEC engine was the fi rst to win the EPA clean air excellence award and meets the 3-star emissions requirements for the California Air Resources Board. “Through its commitment to innovation, Evinrude applied space exploration know-how to
create a better, cleaner marine engine and reduce boaters’ impact on the environment,” says Kevin C. Cook, vice president of marketing & communications, Space Foundation. “Such efforts are a perfect example of why the Space Foundation is committed to bridging the gap between space technology and commercial manufacturing. As the global space community invents new ways to improve space exploration, companies like Evinrude are helping us bring that research into the market to improve quality of life right here on Earth.” The Space Technology Hall of Fame increases public awareness of the benefits of space exploration and encourages further innovation by recognizing individuals, organizations and companies that effectively adapt and market technologies originally developed for space to improve the quality of life for all humanity. evinrude.com FORTRESS MARINE ANCHORS PARTNERS WITH INTERNATIONAL RESCUE GROUP (IRG) AND DONATES ANCHORS FOR THE ORGANIZATION’S BOATS. IRG, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, uses donated vessels and 70 volunteers to deliver food, water and medical supplies to coastal communities affected by disaster and is often able to respond more quickly than government and national humanitarian aid agencies launching a large-scale response. “The devastation caused by just one hurricane is heartbreaking, but 2017 was an unprecedented year,” says Brian Sheehan, Fortress Marine Anchors sales and marketing director. “We’re proud to partner with them in their important work.” fortressanchors.com; internationalrescuegroup.org

THE CRUISING CLUB OF AMERICA (CCA) RECENTLY PRESENTED THEIR 2017 AWARDS to recipients at a dinner in New York. The CCA is a prestigious, invitation-only organization founded in 1921 whose approximately 1,300 members are qualified by their experience in offshore passage making and share a love and respect for the sea. Join us in congratulating these award recipients: Blue Water Medal: Webb Chiles (Hilton Head, SC) was selected for his “meritorious example of seamanship” over five decades, which included circumnavigating the world five times and surviving for 14 days in a 9-foot inflatable dinghy after his yawl swamped in the South Atlantic. Special Recognition Award: Rich Wilson (Boston, MA) was honored for his highly meritorious and extraordinary nautical accomplishments in two Vendee Globe Races, a solo, nonstop race around the world. Wilson is the only American to have finished two of these and is the oldest person ever to complete the race. Young Voyager Award: Jessica Watson (Buderim, Queensland, Australia) was recognized as “a young sailor who has made one or more exceptional voyages.” Watson, now 25, completed a Southern Hemisphere nonstop around-the-world voyage—solo and unassisted—at the age of 16. Rod Stephens Trophy for Outstanding Seamanship: Les Crane (Bermuda) Far Horizons Award: Scott and Kitty Kuhner (Rowayton, CT) Royal Cruising Club Trophy: Tad and Joyce Lhamon (Bainbridge, WA) Richard S. Nye Award: Robert E. Drew (Guilford, CT) For more information on the CCA, go to cruisingclub.org.
