Consider this:
The support of our alumni and friends enables us to look at ways to improve our academic facilities and technology.
CLINICAL PROGRAMS The Clinical Programs include clinical operations of The Eye Center at SCO, our premier patient care facility; Community Vision Health Services, incorporating our School Screening Program, Nursing Home/Assisted Living Program and Community Outreach Program; and the External Clinics, incorporating our new services in the Memphis City Schools Regional Health Clinics.
Progress Items to Note
>> More than 80,000 individuals were provided care through The Eye Center, our Community Vision Health Services or an external clinic such as the Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Memphis. Total Clinical Program office visits increased by 4.4% from the previous year.
>> Over the past five years, net receipts have increased by 45% at The Eye Center, and billable patient encounters have grown by 24%, demonstrating that the program continues to grow as The Eye Center nears its 10-year anniversary.
>> The Clinical Programs provided more than $726,000 in uncompensated or charitable care to Mid-South individuals, $25,000 in exams and low vision devices through Project Magnify, and nearly $50,000 of treatment and materials to more than 220 children through a program that aids school-aged children in need of vision exams.
>> In an effort to provide greater diversity in the types of patients seen by interns, a new vision benefit plan was created for several Memphis area college students.
>> The in-house Optical was expanded by 40% more space, followed by monthly gross sales increases as high as 40%.
Consider this:
Our alumni and supporters in the ophthalmic industry share our commitment to training optometry students at the highest level of clinical education.
Focus on Clinical Education Construction recently completed on The Eye Center’s new Advanced Procedure Theater and Digital Observatory. Two underutilized conference rooms were chosen to house the new areas. Designed for patient care and clinical education, the 500 square foot, one-of-a-kind suite offers interns exposure to a state-of-the-art ophthalmic procedures environment. The procedure room houses ophthalmic lasers and radio-frequency technology for the provision of in-office procedures. The theater area allows up to 10 interns the ability to observe procedures live, behind sound-insulated glass with enhanced digital viewing on monitors displaying the physician’s, patient’s and technicians’ field of view. An additional observatory space permits more interns to view the digitized images of procedures and a clinical professor the ability to provide instruction while being able to interact with physicians and technicians.

CLASS NOTES
David H. Mills, OD ’78 Vietnam Veteran: ’78 Graduate Returns to Help Others When he was only 19, war took future optometrist David H. Mills, OD ’78, to Vietnam’s Central Highlands region. The East Tennessee native knew rural life, but in Vietnam, he encountered the poorest people he had ever seen. “Vietnam was a beautiful country with beautiful people,” he remembers. “The South Vietnamese were just in a quandary. The U.S. told them by day what to do and the Vietcong told them what to do at night. They were in a no-win situation, and no one could be sure who was or wasn’t your friend.” His artillery regiment unit was part of the 4th Infantry Division. Using 155 Howitzer guns that launched massive projectiles 10 miles into enemy territory, his unit frequently changed locations to provide fire support. He remembers learning how to sleep through the round-the-clock, pounding repercussions that left his ears hurting. Yet he survived, and as he left Vietnam in August 1971, “Doc” Mills, as he was called, never thought that he would return 40 years later. Thinking about ways he could help others, last year he found a website for Vets With A Mission, an organization that ministers to Southeast Asians’ physical and spiritual needs. He quickly volunteered. Dr. Mills worked with drug companies, Lombart Instruments, the Rotary Club, the Lions Club and others in his community to raise money for medicine and to secure loaned equipment and 950 pairs of glasses to take to Vietnam. In January 2011, he traveled with a team of nearly 20 people, the only optometrist among a group that included an MD and three RNs. Eight of the group’s members were Vietnam vets. This time, they didn’t go to fight; they went to heal and help foster peace and goodwill. Setting up portable examination equipment, he checked eyes and diagnosed disease that warranted additional treatment. Interpreters helped patients describe symptoms. The group saw nearly 100 patients a day over a five-day period. “I saw one man who was blind from glaucoma and cataracts. He went into surgery that afternoon and could see again,” Dr. Mills says. “Another little girl was wearing the biggest pair of glasses, and I was able to find cute little girl glasses that made her very happy.” During his visit, he drove to sites where fierce battles had occurred more than 40 years ago. “It was all peaceful now,” he says. “I gained a lot of peace in my mind that the war was really over. A lot of soldiers think they’re going to see Vietnam like they remember it, but most of the folks there have moved on, so it was good for me to see that the war was behind us now. I helped some people, but I probably helped myself more than any of the patients I saw.” Dr. Mills cites his SCO days as part of his inspiration for returning to Vietnam. “I always appreciated the SVOSH trips that Dr. Al Fors took when I was an SCO student. I was never able to go on any, and that’s kind of the impetus that I had to go to Vietnam, because of all the good mission trips that SCO has done over the years.” He hopes to visit Vietnam again in a few years. “I want to go back to help more of the people that I made life difficult for while I was there. They’re hard-working people whose lives consist of working or finding something to eat to survive. I’d like to get a cataract team together. We could do a lot of good over there.” To make a donation funding the project’s supplies or to learn more, visit the Veterans With a Mission website at www.vwam.com or www.vetswithamission.org.

I agreed to serve on the Alumni Council because I am passionate about optometry and the future of our profession. I feel like it is important to give back to an institution that has given so much to me. My time at SCO was a great experience, and it has been the foundation for maintaining a successful private practice. I want to ensure that future optometry students not only have a similar experience to mine but an even better one. In my opinion, it is important that SCO involve recent graduates to make sure that not only SCO continues to excel in academic and clinical performances, but the profession of optometry continues to thrive as well. Positive things are happening at SCO right now! I had the privilege of being on campus this past Homecoming for a presentation by the Student Government Association. It was so refreshing to see the new faces of optometry, and their passion and ideas really motivated me to want to support their cause as well as evaluate my own goals and dreams for my practice. SCO Partners with Head Start to Help Kids With funding support from the American Optometric Association’s Healthy Eyes Healthy People initiative, SCO’s Community Outreach Program recently partnered with Head Start to provide children with vision examinations. Delano Head Start in Memphis was selected to participate in a new pilot program, the Head Start Vision Initiative. Under the program, a packet was being sent home to children at Delano Head Start. The packet contained a flyer explaining the program, a consent form, and an appointment card. Children who received parental or guardian consent were provided with no-cost transportation, arranged by Shelby County Head Start, to The Eye Center for eye examinations. Parents were provided with the results of their child’s examination. Funds were available for those without insurance benefits to provide eyeglasses or follow-up care. The program recently expanded to a second Head Start location. “We believe this pilot program will provide care to a significant number of young children, and if successful, will enable us to expand similar care to other Head Start centers in the community,” said James E. Venable, OD ’89, Vice President for Clinical Programs.

increase awareness about optometry as a career to under-represented high school students and their parents. Dr. Janette Dumas, Coordinator of Minority Recruitment, said the goal is to connect with several Memphis City Schools and encourage students with good grades. Students interested in the health professions will apply to attend a two-day seminar designed to expose them to the profession of optometry. Day One of the program will provide students with an introduction to optometry, a moderated panel, a tour of The Eye Center and dinner. Day Two will provide information about goal setting, study skills, test taking, optometry admissions requirements, and shadowing in a lab. Applications will begin in January 2012, culminating in the first program by next summer.

Student News — Eleven SVOSH members and two staff doctors recently visited Honduras for the group’s ninth international trip of 2011. The year’s trips broke SVOSH records, as SCO’s combined student groups saw 9,222 patients and dispensed 7,322 pairs of glasses in 2011. — SCO students and doctors have visited Kentucky and Henderson, Tennessee in recent months for weekend Remote Area Medical (RAM) trips. Several hundred patients were seen. — Two students were honored at this fall’s meeting of the Academy, including, Truc Ly Nguyen, ’12, pictured at left, recipient of the Zeiss Fellowship Award, and Ellen Elmore, ’13, recipient of the Antoinette Molinari Scholarship for 2011 from American Optometric Foundation. — Marcus Cooke, ’12, is the recipient of the Arkansas Optometric Association’s 2011 Dr. William H. Townsend Scholarship. — Student loan cohort default rates for SCO remained at zero percent for the 15th consecutive year; the national average was 8.8%, up from last year’s rate of 7%.
Eleven-year-old Isaiah Travers has an infectious laugh and remarkable attitude. It is hard not to smile as he giggles and cheers during a fitting for new glasses that will allow him to see after almost a year of lost vision. Isaiah recently came to The Eye Center at Southern College of Optometry after being referred by a friend whose husband works at SCO. Isaiah experienced total vision loss after his second surgery to treat Craniopharyngioma, a benign tumor that develops near the pituitary gland and often damages the optic nerve or causes vision loss. Isaiah is currently being treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where he has undergone seven surgeries, four procedures, and 31 radiation treatments. Isaiah’s mom, Maggie, said that doctors weren’t sure if his vision would ever return. She explained that he only has light detection in his left eye and tunnel vision in his right eye. Isaiah cannot use peripheral vision in either eye at all, so he only sees from the center of his eye. The little vision he does have reads 20/400 on vision tests. “It has affected every aspect of his life, his coordination, balance and his ability to do everyday activities, like watching TV with the family, eating, or playing with his friends,” Maggie said. In a recent visit to The Eye Center, Isaiah was given a portable Electronic Magnifier, also known as a CCTV, for reading. The camera-sized device allows him to place it on top of text and magnify it several times larger so he can read it. The device also allows him to view text using different contrasts. Because Isaiah reads best if the text is white on a black background, he can adjust the contrast to his liking. Isaiah was also given other devices that are designed to help him see things from a distance, such as when he is watching TV or looking at objects from across the room. Isaiah said he’s most excited about being able to read again. He can now resume reading his two favorite books – The Magic Tree House and Nate the Great. Best of all, according to Isaiah: “I can also play kickball during game time at Awana,” a youth group program at his church. His mother noted that she is most looking forward to her son regaining some of his independence. “He has difficulty participating in things most people take for granted, such as following the readings in Sunday school class and doing his school work. These devices will allow him to be able to read along with his peers, and participate in everyday activities.” She added, “This will be life-changing for Isaiah. We’re so grateful for this technology, and how it will impact his daily life.” Maggie is encouraging St. Jude to partner with The Eye Center to help other children who need low vision devices. Meanwhile, she intends to join several dozen other mothers of children like Isaiah by shaving her head to show their support. The Commercial Appeal recently ran an article about her effort.
Drs. Sharon Lee, Reena Lepine, and Jessica Stephenson work with Isaiah Travers as he learns how to use a low vision assistive device.
