Fall 2013

Professor Emeritus Jim Newman, OD ’73, retired this summer after 40 years of service to optometric education. By teaching nearly 5,000 of our nation’s optometric physicians, Dr. Newman’s contributions to SCO will be fondly remembered through the years by generations of alumni. In honor of one of SCO’s most beloved and long-time faculty members, SCO’s Board of Trustees voted to match up to $200,000 in alumni gifts to name the college’s new pre-clinical labs in Dr. Newman’s honor.

appreciation If you would like to show your gratitude for Dr. Newman’s guidance during your years as an optometry student, please consider making a gift to support the renaming of SCO’s new pre-clinical labs in his honor.

FROM THE PRESIDENT A Message of Gratitude for Our Success If you’ll indulge me on a personal note, I want to extend my deepest appreciation to all of our alumni and friends who have expressed your support during the past few months. In August, I broke my femur in four places as a result of an accident on the stairs in my home. Through surgery and recuperation, your support has meant so much to me and my family. I face more rehabilitation in the coming months, but thanks to technology, I’ve been in touch with many of you, and I’m slowly returning to a regular schedule. You can understand what a thrill it was to return to campus to officiate during Homecoming as we formally dedicated our new academic complex in October. As you’ll see in this Annual Report issue of Visions, our new facility is setting higher standards for excellence in optometric education. Our students enthusiastically have embraced this new facility, made possible by your support. As I noted during the dedication ceremony, we designed and built a facility that is more than just a building. It’s where we accept the great responsibility of delivering the highest quality of graduates who leave here prepared to practice across the nation and abroad. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, those who worked and sacrificed time and money to build our program’s strength. This project symbolizes the promise of our profession in the coming years. We go forward more committed than ever to preparing our graduates both within and beyond this campus. Our commitment to service, to lifelong learning, and to educating the best healthcare providers possible — these are the ideals that we will embrace in these educational facilities. In this issue, you’ll see that this past fiscal year saw these ideals in action. The SCO campus is more active than ever in service. We’re planning new destination CE events to support lifelong learning among our graduates. And our students are thriving and finding success as they transition into some of the nation’s finest optometric physicians. Thanks to all our alumni and friends for your financial support. Because of you, we’re nearly to the $4 million mark two years into our five-year fundraising goal. We intend to work just as hard to secure funding for more scholarships and patient care opportunities. Our work today will be our legacy in that we envisioned a better profession for our students, all of whom are destined to join the ranks of our alumni. Together, we will continue working in a spirit of continuous improvement. You are a part of SCO’s success, and on behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we extend our gratitude to all who make SCO the best.

New Chapter of SCO History SCO Dedicates New Academic Facility Perhaps the largest gathering of alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students and their families assembled on Friday, October 4 as the college formally dedicated its academic facility. Completed after more than two years of planning and construction, the $9.4 million facility adds 23,016 square feet to SCO’s campus. In subsequent pages, you’ll see an array of photos that showcase the new complex, including new classrooms, an atrium and grand hall, new pre-clinical laboratories, research suites, faculty offices, study nooks and other improvements. Representing SCO’s most ambitious undertaking since the construction of The Eye Center in 2002, the new building’s classrooms feature a capacity of over 600 with break-out rooms. Leading the dedication ceremony was SCO President Richard W. Phillips, OD ’78. Also officiating were SCO Board Chair Jarrett Johnson, OD ’90, former Board member and Memphis Mayor A C Wharton (shown right), and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, son-in-law of Norman Stringer, OD ’49. Participating in the ribbon-cutting ceremony were SCO President Emeritus William E. Cochran, OD ’68, Immediate Past Board Chair John A. Gazaway, OD ’67, and Martha Rosemore Morrow, OD ’74, Alumni Council Representative to the Board. Representatives of the faculty, staff and students included Faculty Representative Scott Ensor, OD ’01, Stephanie Lew, ’14, Jigna Patel, ’15, and two of SCO’s longest-serving staff members, Sadie Fleming, Physical Plant staff member of 41 years, and Velma Dickson, Student Services Staff Member of 39 years. Prior to the dedication ceremony, the NBC TV affiliate in Memphis toured the facility, and the ceremony was covered by the local Fox station as well as print publications.

SCO’s building project was funded by a five-year $4 million capital campaign. As of November 2013, the college had surpassed the $3.7 million fundraising mark, making this one of its most successful campaigns in the school’s history. Major donors were recognized with signs noting named areas throughout the new complex; a full list of donors who are supporting the “Envision Our Progress” can be found starting on page 10.

If you would like to learn more about giving opportunities to help us finalize the capital campaign in support of our new academic facility, contact the Office of Institutional Advancement to discuss opportunities to make a gift. Call (901) 722-3216 or visit sco.edu.

How We Built Our New Facility The creation of SCO’s newest academic facility began by talking to our students. As the primary stakeholders in our daily mission, SCO’s students provided the input that identified the need to provide a 21st century learning environment. As we proudly present our newest facility to be enjoyed by generations of students to come, here’s a look at the construction of our new facility as it happened over the past two years.

Such a large new academic complex means there are more photos than we can share in print. Visit the college’s website to see more coverage of our dedication ceremony and new facility.

YEAR IN REVIEW SCO is making great strides toward strategic plan goals that create a culture with expectations of results framed by continuous improvement. Each success builds on the last and strengthens our ability to accomplish the next one. The college’s mission is defined by three primary goals:

1

2Promoting lifelong learning

Educating the best possible healthcare providers

3

In this Annual Report section, you’ll read and see highlights of some of the more notable accomplishments that defined SCO’s success over the past fiscal year and into the next. Our mission is illustrated by the impact we make in the education of our students, in the success of our alumni and the difference we make in serving others. A common refrain could be heard during this Fall’s Homecoming and CE weekend, including the unveiling of SCO’s new academic facility. Those alumni who come back to visit their alma mater, many for the first time since their graduation, are inspired by the energy that propels SCO forward. Over the next year, SCO will begin the process of refining and developing new strategic plan objectives. Your involvement and input as alumni and friends of the college will be vital in shaping the future of this institution. We welcome your input and feedback in all that we’re accomplishing together.

Convocation Recognizes Achievement SCO held its 28th annual Convocation ceremony in October to honor achievement by SCO’s alumni, students, faculty and staff. First-year students were formally welcomed into the profession of optometry by receiving their white coats, signing SCO’s Honor Code, and reciting the optometric student oath. Receiving SCO’s Lifetime Achievement Award – the college’s highest honor – were U.S. Senator John Boozman, OD ’77, and Professor Emeritus Jim Newman, OD ’73 (pictured). This year’s Young Alumni Award recipient was USN Lt. Commander Emily Sprague, OD ’04 (pictured). Scott Ensor, OD ’01, received the Burnett Faculty Recognition Award and former faculty member Fred Burnett, OD ’80, was remembered on the week of his passing. Faculty of the Year Awards were presented to Daniel Smith, OD ’94, William Kress, OD (three

awards), Daniel Taylor, OD ’06, Carrie Lebowitz, OD ’06, Richard Savoy, OD, and Scott Ensor, OD ’01. The Class of 1963 was also recognized on the occasion of its 50-year anniversary with certificates noting their special milestone of service to the profession.

Scholarships and other honors were awarded in recognition of academic excellence, leadership or service. Many student scholarships were made possible through the generous and consistent financial support of SCO alumni to the Annual Fund and Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Achieving Success Two recent graduates share their insights about achieving success Rob Szeliga, OD ’05, established Spring Hill Eyecare, a private practice near Nashville. He’s attended two of the Hayes Center’s earliest programs for alumni. Recent graduate Keegan Hearn, OD ’11, joined the practice this year. Here they share their experience in how the Hayes Center contributed to their success as they work together to meet the challenges and opportunities that await recent graduates.

Dr. Rob Szeliga Q: What were the challenges you faced in opening a practice right out of school? A: Opening

Founded at SCO in 2005, the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence administers a dynamic program integrating career counseling, placement services and promoting practice management concepts designed

a practice right after graduating was a huge undertaking with a lot of sleepless nights in the beginning. The most challenging thing about doing so was that everything has to be created. You are literally starting from scratch. You have to acquire funding, which is not easy without at least two years’ experience as a doctor, but you have to know how much funding. You have to meet with contractors and designers to get quotes to get an estimate on costs, without knowing if you can get the funding. You are also trying to get all your new doctor numbers — state license, DEA, Medicare, etc. — and get on insurance panels without having a physical location. Think of everything that is in an office from a phoropter to a stapler…it all has to be purchased. And then you have to get patients in the office.

to transition graduates into successful careers.

Q: You attended a Hayes Center for Practice Excellence program specific to recent graduates in private practice. How did it help you in your transition as a practice owner? A: I attended the Hayes Center’s “Private Practice Primer” two different times after graduating. One specific thing that I took away from those meetings was to invest continuously in your practice. After the first meeting, I was inspired to go ahead and equip a second exam lane. After attending the second year, I decided to double my square footage to have

four exam lanes and special testing rooms. We are continuously reinvesting in the practice…replacing a GDx with an OCT, a pupillometer with an iPad, manual phoropters with automated ones. There are definitely opportunities to make more money right out of school than opening cold, so you have to be in it for the long-term investment. I think the program should be offered to all new graduates that want to go into private practice to let them know it can be done.

Q: How did you make the decision to bring in an associate? What have you learned in this process that you would want others to know? A: Outside of SCO and my externships, I had never worked anywhere else. I didn’t do fill-in work or work part-time in a commercial setting. I decided that I wanted to devote all my time to growing my own practice. I also had never had another doctor fill in for me. If I was ever out of the office, we didn’t see patients. This summer my wife and I wanted to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary with a two-week trip to Europe. I didn’t want to close the office for two weeks, so the staff took their vacation one of the weeks and I looked for a fill-in doctor for the other. While interviewing potential fill-in doctors, I was also scouting for an associate. We were getting booked out a couple weeks in advance with a highly delegated staff. I am also trying to transition into more of a CEO of my practice and have a little more time devoted to the practice management aspects to grow the practice while condensing my patient load into fewer days. I wanted to find a good fit not only for my staff, but also my patients. Having a new doctor in my office was to me like having someone come live in your house with your family while you are away.

Q: What does Dr. Hearn add to your practice that made him a good fit? A: While

all the doctors I interviewed were all skilled optometrists, Dr. Hearn’s personality and desire to be in a private practice for more than just fill-in work made him an excellent choice. We both

practice. Although the Hayes Center didn’t directly lead me to Spring Hill Eyecare, they helped guide me away from other opportunities that would have been a poor fit.

Q: What was it about the opportunity at Spring Hill Eyecare that attracted you to the position? A: Dr. Rob, the staff, and the ability to practice to the fullest scope possible. His staff is well trained, hardworking, and works as a team. The key factor was the first moment I met Dr. Rob. I was very comfortable and could be myself. We can have honest interaction. Like Dr. Jerry Eisenstatt, Executive Director of the Hayes Center, said in practice management, “pick your partner better than you pick your spouse.”

Shown below is the Facebook post announcing Dr. Hearn’s addition as an associate at Spring Hill Eyecare.

Q: How did you and Dr. Szeliga connect? A: In conjunction with the guidance from the

use similar phrases when communicating with our patients and both take interest in our patients’ lives. My return flight was delayed from that trip so we missed a connecting flight. Dr. Hearn was able to fill in for one more day for me and was quick to remind me of the advantages of having an associate doctor. I also wasn’t ready for a full-time associate, so it helps that Dr. Hearn still works in a commercial setting, that’s not too close geographically, so that we can gradually transition him into having more hours here.

Dr. Keegan Hearn Q: What assistance did you receive from the Hayes Center as an SCO student?

Hayes Center, I found that the contact lens reps and frame reps are an amazing resource. Fresh out of school, I made time to greet and speak with the reps that came to the corporate location where I was working. I made an impression, networked, and let them know where I wanted to be. It was a contact lens rep that recommended me to Dr. Rob when asked if he knew anyone that would be a good fit.

Q: What have you learned in the process of joining a successful practice that you would want others to know? A: The

most important lesson I learned in this process is to trust your instincts. If you’re hesitant and not fully excited about an opportunity, then that should give you your answer. I turned down two offers because I had that hesitance and lack of excitement. They were difficult decisions because I had no foreseeable new opportunities. Now that I’m at Spring Hill Eyecare, I know why I had to turn down the others.

A: The Hayes Center for Practice Excellence helped me by providing a sounding board for ideas, advice, and decision making in locating and joining a
