From the desk of the CEO By the time you read this piece your new CEO will have completed his first six months in post. It has been a wonderful period of acclimatisation and adjustment to South Australian life and induction into the amazing organisation that is Southern Cross Care (SA & NT). Every day has brought new experiences, new places to see and explore and new people to meet. Following on the previous six months of preparation for our move from the UK, for my wife Anne and me it has been a momentous year. It is a great privilege to have been offered this opportunity to contribute to the future development of our organisation. As a newcomer one cannot fail to be impressed by the South Australian culture, its environment and the quality of life enjoyed by the majority of the population. We have enjoyed many new experiences in the past few months. Above all we have been overwhelmed by the hospitality, friendliness and welcome that we have experienced from so many people. The way South Australians embrace newcomers says much about the strength of the society and of course it reflects the fact that everyone one meets has their own story of how they or their family came to this beautiful part of the world. I have much appreciated hearing some of these stories from our residents and staff and look forward to hearing many more. I have also
enjoyed the sense of joining a wonderfully diverse workforce of caring people from all over the world. I have now had a chance to visit all our residential sites and community bases and in the coming months will continue to get out and about as much as possible to meet residents and staff. In addition I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know colleagues in the Aged Care sector, politicians and government officials, and many other business and social contacts. From these meetings and discussions I have gained a strong sense of the excellent reputation that Southern Cross Care enjoys within the communities it serves. It has also been a pleasure to travel interstate to meet my fellow CEOs of the other state Southern Cross Care organisations. Much thought is being given to our plans for the future. Building on our strong inheritance and all that has been achieved so far on the Southern Cross Care journey, we are making plans and preparing the organisation for the next five years and beyond. These plans will see us continuing to develop our facilities, our villages and our workforce to meet the needs of future generations of older South Australians and Northern Territorians. We are looking to strengthen our community care services, our research activity and

Knights of the Southern Cross 90th anniversary The Order of The Knights of the Southern Cross, to whom Southern Cross Care owes its very existence, celebrated its 90th anniversary with a mass in St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral and a dinner on 24th March. The mass was concelebrated by Archbishop Philip Wilson, Emeritus Archbishop Leonard Faulkner and State Chaplain Monsignor Vincent Tiggeman. In February 1922, a small group of Catholic laymen met in Adelaide to begin the South Australian branch of the Knights with the aim of supporting the Church and Catholic Charities in the community.
In August 1968 they made the momentous decision to register the name ‘Southern Cross Homes Inc’. with their first project being the construction of a modest group of one bedroom units at Croydon Park. The foresight of this group has resulted in the organisation that exists today, caring for people of all religious, cultural and social backgrounds. Southern Cross Care (SA & NT) Inc is one of the largest providers of aged care services in South Australia and has expanded to the Northern Territory. With 1600 staff, almost 1300 beds in 15 residential care homes, 779 retirement
units across 33 sites, 450 in-home clients and 1200 day therapy clients the organisation has also won several awards for its exceptional accommodation. We congratulate The Knights of The Southern Cross on their 90 years of serving the community.

First residents make Pearl Retirement Resort their home “ It’s true what the brochures say about Pearl – it’s like moving into the most beautiful tropical holiday resort. Except you can stay as long as you like!” say Kathy and Ronald Smith. After much anticipation, the first Pearl Retirement Resort residents have moved into their brand new, architecturally designed retirement villa at Fannie Bay. “The first residents are so excited, not only to be moving into their villa, but they will be the very first residents moving into Darwin’s
first ever retirement resort.” said Eddie Edens, Pearl’s Village Manager. “Their friends are excited too! They continue to call and make appointments with me to tour the village or just drop by my office. They want to see what all the chatter is about and don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to live here themselves.” Among the first residents to make the move were Kathy and Ronald Smith, who moved into their new villa during December. Kathy was excited as she was able to cook her family
Christmas dinner in her lovely new sparkling kitchen. When asked how she felt about moving into Pearl, she didn’t hesitate with her answer, “We are blissfully happy here.” she said. Until recently the only options available for Darwin’s retirees who wanted to downsize and move into a retirement complex was to pack up, leave town and head south. “Leaving Darwin wasn’t an option for us.” Kathy said. “It would have been too much of a sacrifice because all of our family is here – life is nothing without your family.”

Obituary – Bernie Pittman We record, with sadness, the death of Bernie Pittman in December 2011. Bernie, a Life Member of Southern Cross Care (SCC), was the first chief executive officer of the organisation. During the eighteen years that Bernie filled the senior administration role, the construction and commissioning of our residential care facilities at The Pines, Lourdes Valley, PKC, Mount Carmel,

Fullarton and Gawler were completed. In addition, retirement villages at Coach House Mews, The Pines, Heritage Apartments and Wattle Grove were established. In an interview only weeks prior to his death, Bernie warmly referred to the establishment of the Hospice at the Philip Kennedy Centre as being the greatest achievement by SCC during the term of his employment.
Bernie Pittman will long be remembered for the outstanding contribution he made during the formative years of the organisation. May he rest in peace.
Making the move into a retirement village – June and Ross’ story It’s another beautiful day at Goolwa and June and Ross Tuohy are enjoying their lovely garden and bright, modern home just across the road from the water – at Riverside at Goolwa retirement village. Making the move from your home of many years is a major life decision, and for June and Ross, who had lived in their Glenelg North home for 31 years, there were many things to consider. However with their children living interstate and overseas they had the freedom to make the decision that suited them. Like many other couples they were managing a large family home on a big block with a pool and all that entails. A simpler and easier lifestyle beckoned. Ross had been a regular visitor to Goolwa since he was 16 years of age and competing in sailing regattas, so they decided to come and see what the town had to offer. They were looking for a house, and had never even considered a retirement village. While driving along the waterfront on Liverpool Road one Sunday, they noticed some vacant land with a sign – ‘Riverside Retirement Village to be constructed here’, with the Southern Cross Care logo and a phone number. First thing on the Monday morning Ross made the call, was sent a prospectus and then he and June made an immediate decision that this was what they were looking for.
After lengthy telephone calls to Melbourne and France, their children declared total support, but telling their friends was not quite so simple. Most said, ‘A retirement village – what do you think you’re doing?” The benefits to Ross and June of their decision are many: They already knew a number of people at Goolwa, they loved the house plans and the fact that they could ‘lock up and leave’. Another plus was the continuum of care offered by Southern Cross Care if required in the future, and there is plenty of security in both the village itself, and the health options available very close by. There is also a wonderful community spirit with residents helping each other out, and with only 50 villas on the site, it is not too big. Being a couple who have always loved a party, the beautiful club house with its views across the river also appealed and for the first time in her life June now has a diary to manage their many social engagements. While there is always something happening, June says that residents can have as much privacy or interaction as they wish.

The friends who questioned their move are now envious of their lifestyle. They are able to travel a lot and Ross still drives up to Adelaide regularly to enjoy the football. With a few more wins by the Crows, life would be perfect!
After 4 ½ years June and Ross say they have absolutely no regrets.
Mind mapping program helping residents with memory loss Southern Cross Care’s Gawler Village has been achieving remarkable results for its residents with memory loss with a program called ’Mind Mapping’. Lifestyle Co-ordinator Julie Lloyd attended a workshop that introduced the therapy resulting in the implementation of a trial. The program is founded in reality orientation and reminiscence therapy. It re-teaches orientation of time, place and person and recall of events from the past. Mind Mapping is the name given to the program as it reflects the similarity of pathways in the brain to pathways in travel – highway systems. Our daily life provides constant prompting and brain functioning throughout the day – eg organising schedules,
offering opinions, attending work, household management and so on, however when people move into aged care they step away from many of these tasks and so the brain needs stimulation to keep the pathways functioning effectively. The 14 different programmed activities undertaken by the group include physical games, guessing the name of songs, sports people etc, current affairs discussion, cooking, looking at maps, number games, word games, team quizzes and much more. A topic called ‘Being Creative’ brings the participants together to work on group projects. Lifestyle staff at Gawler Village review each resident’s lifestyle program every four months, bringing residents into the Mind Mapping
program as required. The results have been so good that some residents have had their memory loss reclassified as mild rather than moderate. There has been increased interaction between residents, an improvement in verbal communication and an increase in self esteem. Residents are chatting more with each other and staff leading to increased enjoyment and participation in life. Staff also have benefitted by having increased insight into residents’ previous lives. While the program cannot prevent memory loss, there is a slowing of the process resulting in better communication and participation by residents in the long term.

Don’s Story Donald Leak was born in Kent, UK, on 6th February 1912. His family migrated to Adelaide in 1915 when he was 3 years of age. Don met his future wife, Nella, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Plympton where he was a Sunday School teacher (so he could meet the prettiest girls, he says!) and they were married there in 1933 when Don was 21 and Nella just 17. They will celebrate their 79th wedding anniversary on 4th May. When war broke out, Don was asked to join the
civil service, and he was sent to Darwin where he was present during the infamous bombing. While there his job was to repair the wharf and build bridges for the army. It is a tribute to Don’s still vibrant personality that he kept a pet crocodile while a Darwin resident!

A self-employed carpenter/builder, Don built his and Nella’s first home at Plympton where he owned land and named his street Kent Street after his birthplace. He also built their next home on the Patawalonga Frontage at North Glenelg where they lived for almost 50 years,
Ivan’s Story Ivan Romanowski was born in Poland on 3rd March 1912. As his father was a forester, Ivan was unable to attend school and he became a shepherd at only 6 years of age. He had limited home schooling and taught himself to read and write. In later, happier times, he also taught himself the piano accordian, the tango and the waltz. During the war years Ivan was a partisan in Belorus where he became a prisoner of war and was sent to a forced labour camp where he met his future wife. Nadia was also a prisoner and very ill. Ivan saved her life by buying her butter which he put into hot water for her to drink. He was also able to get medicines she needed and when he discovered she had no soles in her shoes, he made her a set from cardboard. Nadia and Ivan were married in Munich in 1945 and went on to have 3 children – Tamara, John and Vladimir. They arrived in Australia as post war
immigrants on November 15th 1949 and were married for 62 years. After they migrated to Australia, Ivan, who by this time had become a Master Bricklayer, built two houses from scratch. While speaking only Polish, Ivan understands enough English to enjoy life. He loved gardening, handyman work and dancing and was a talented, although untrained, musician. Sadly Nadia passed away in 2008, but Ivan now has 6 grandchildren and enjoys spending time with his family and listening to music at Onkaparinga Lodge where he has lived for the past 2 years. We are privileged that so many centenarians have chosen to call Southern Cross Care home and we wish them all health and happiness.

The Phillip Kennedy Centre
Project update The ageing population of Australia is presenting new challenges to providers of accommodation and care, with Southern Cross Care continuing to grow to meet the demand. Currently the organisation has 1287 Residential Aged Care beds across 15 sites, 807 Retirement Living Community dwellings across 33 sites, 450 inhome clients and 1200 day therapy clients. A number of projects are currently either in the planning stages, in progress or just completed. A snapshot is presented here.
Philip Kennedy Centre – Largs Bay Phase 1 of the redeveloped Philip Kennedy Centre has now been completed with residents relocated into their new home. During the course of the extensive building program, 52 beds have been housed in a new building, including 12 from the Hospice and 40 from Residential Aged Care. All rooms are spacious with ensuite facilities and there are open plan communal areas.
The new development has ensured an outstanding physical environment in which to provide high quality care. Combining the warmth and sense of community embodied by the previous centre, with cutting edge design and innovation, the Philip Kennedy Centre will continue to be the flagship of SCC’s operations in the western suburbs.
Gawler Village - Gawler East
Mt Barker
Gawler Village Residential Care, home to 40 residents, is in the process of being completely redeveloped with a new, single building replacing the existing separate buildings. The new building will be designed with SCC’s usual quality and attention to detail and with consideration of residents’ needs foremost. All rooms are single occupancy and will be ensuited, and there will be sitting out areas and small communal dining rooms.
SCC is in the process of liaising with Council over land it has under contract in the beautiful Adelaide Hills at Mt Barker to build an 80 bed Residential Care Home co-located with a proposed SCC Retirement Living Community with a range of villas. Mt Barker is 33kms up the South Eastern Freeway to the east of the CBD, has a population of approximately 10,200 and is one of the fastest growing areas in South Australia. Its old world charm combined with modern amenities makes Mt Barker a highly regarded residential area.
The new building will cater for 80 residents in a relaxed garden setting and provide increased opportunity for residents of the northern suburbs to have access to quality aged care close to home. A Retirement Living Community comprising 40 villas on the site is also on the drawing board, but work will not commence until the residential care home has been completed.

Carmelite Site – Myrtle Bank Plans to develop the former Carmelite site of some 23,995sm at Myrtle Bank have not yet been finalised but some initial master planning has progressed. It is anticipated this major project will eventually encompass a range of Retirement Living Community apartments and Residential Aged Care with a significant green space component. Only 8 km from the CBD, with excellent transport, shopping and medical options easily accessible in addition to beautiful Ridge Park, the development is eagerly anticipated. With a heritage aspect to the site, care will be taken to link this with Lourdes Valley, which has similar historical aspects that are important to our organisation

Pearl Retirement Resort - Fannie Bay Since launching Pearl, there has been an overwhelming response from the general public. Stage 1 of the retirement village development is now complete and many residents have already moved in. Stage 2 residents are also eagerly anticipating moving into their new homes. Riverpoint Retirement Estate at Noarlunga Downs is another Southern Cross Care success story with residents already moving into stage 2 and stage 3 due for completion mid May. Construction on the community centre comprising a library/computer room, billiards/games room, lounge area with flat screen TV, lovely open gas fire, alfresco BBQ area and gym will be underway shortly as we have reached the end of our tender process.
The substantial growth in the number of SCC staff (now 1600), with a flowon increase in the number of corporate staff, resulted in an urgent need to upgrade the building at 151 Greenhill Road and increase the amount of accommodation provided. The upgrade is due for completion at the end of April with the installation of a much anticipated lift at the front of building and the new facade providing the finishing touches. A ramp has also been installed to make the building much more user friendly for all who visit and work there.
Riverpoint will ultimately comprise approximately 109 villas in a beautiful setting adjacent to the Onkaparinga River wetlands and close to Port Noarlunga township and the vineyards of the Southern Vales. Residents of the southern suburbs are pleasantly surprised by the quality of this project, and have enthusiastically embraced it, which enables them to retire in an area they know and love.
Most of the corporate staff are now located in this building with a resulting improvement in communication, efficiency and morale.

Art therapy improving quality of life A program aimed at improving the quality of life of residents with low to moderate levels of dementia is working wonders at Mt Carmel Hostel at Rosewater. Staff in the Memory Support Unit, known to all as ‘Sunshine’, conduct art sessions in which residents are encouraged to take part. So popular are the sessions that residents of the hostel also join in. One of the artists, Rita, has amazed everyone, including herself, by being discovered to have a flair for painting that has remained hidden her entire life.
Her paintings of flowers are beautiful and grace the walls of the unit. An exhibition of the artwork was held last year in the library at the West Torrens Council Chambers and opened the eyes of all who saw it. As the group gathers to enjoy the program, various behaviours disappear as if by magic
as they work together and begin to interact. Cognitive and sensory stimulation are facilitated through touch and colour. The atmosphere is relaxed and happy. As a result there has been a marked improvement in social skills and involvement in group activities plus a lifting of the spirits of all involved, including the staff who run the program

Pines trolley team winning hearts for 30 years One of the most valuable services offered at The Pines Lodge at North Plympton is that provided by the trolley team who run a mobile ‘corner store’, providing necessities and luxuries to residents, many of whom are unable to go shopping.

One of the most popular lines is greeting cards which are sold for under $1, but items such as confectionery, biscuits, tissues, shampoo, toothpaste and body wash are also big sellers. Special requests from residents are always fulfilled.
Commencing with the original kiosk in the old building which was then operated as a commercial enterprise, Southern Cross Care volunteers took over in February 1981 with first manager Nan Barnden in charge. Brian Anderson, who commenced volunteering with
If not for this dedicated team residents would not have access to a wide range of goods at prices below that of supermarkets. Brian spends 35-40 hours each week sourcing items and going to up to 35 different supermarkets to take advantage of the weekly specials.
This wonderful service has now been in operation for over 30 years with all profits going back to amenities and entertainment for residents.
Residents reap the benefit In Memory donations have long been a valued source of income that provides those special extras for our residents. At the Philip Kennedy Centre the result of these thoughtful gifts is seen everywhere. A beautiful timber garden setting, a handmade cupboard to house DVDs, a residents’ refrigerator and all of the television sets in residents’ rooms have been gifted, along with numerous other items. The support shown by relatives and friends of those who have passed away is a constant source of remembrance and appreciation from both residents and staff.
