NEW ZEALAND COLLECTION
NEW ZEALAND GENERAL INFORMATION Language English and Maori are the official languages. English is spoken everywhere, Maori mainly only at ceremonial occasions. Currency The New Zealand Dollar = 100 cents. All major credit cards are recognised and New Zealand has an extensive EFTPOS system with 24 hour cash machine facilities widely available. Time New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). In summer clocks go forward one hour for Daylight Saving which starts the last Sunday in September and ends on the first Sunday in April. Passports A valid passport is required. It must not expire for at least six months after your intended date of departure. Immigration and customs formalities are kept to a minimum at airports. Visas British and American passport holders do not require visas for visits of three months or less. Other nationalities should check individual requirements. Health Requirements Vaccination certificates are not required for New Zealand, but consult your doctor if you have stopovers enroute to New Zealand. New Zealand has a high standard of healthcare with modern hospitals and facilities. Travel insurance is highly recommended. Climate Temperatures are pleasantly warm in summer, occasionally reaching 30°C. The warmest months are December, January, February and March (average maximum temperatures range between 20-25°C (68-77°F). The coldest months are June, July and August with average maximum day temperatures ranging between 10-12°C (around 50°F) in the south and 15-17°C (around 60°F) in the north. Most areas of both islands have between 2,000 and 2,400 hours of sunshine a year. Much of the North Island has a ‘Mediterranean’ climate and the majority of the South Island has warm summers and cool winters. Electricity New Zealand has a 230 volt, 50 hertz mains electricity supply. European and USA adaptors are required.
Liquor Laws New Zealand’s licensing laws are fairly liberal and most cafés, restaurants and night spots serve liquor seven days a week. The legal drinking age is 18. Driving Laws and Conditions New Zealand speed limits range from 50kmph (30mph) in urban areas to 100kmph (60mph) on motorways and highways. Vehicles drive on the left side of the road (that is right hand drive like the UK, Australia and Japan). Drinking and driving is not tolerated with low alcohol blood limits and severe penalties in place. Communications Email services are available almost nationwide, even in remote parts of the country. 3G and 4G digital cell networks, with rental phones or SIM cards, are widely available. Transport With an extensive and excellent network of roads, New Zealand also has an extensive domestic air network. In different parts of the country there are a number of scenic train routes; car ferries regularly ply between the North and South Islands. Clothing In keeping with New Zealand’s relaxed lifestyle, dress is informal on most occasions. In summer it is usually warm enough to go out in the evenings without a jacket, but a light jacket or sweater should be packed for cooler weather and visits to the high country. You can expect some rain so include a light waterproof jacket or coat. Pack warm winter clothing if visiting between May and September. Layers of clothing are recommended year round to adapt to the changeable temperatures that can be encountered during the course of a day.
