Springtime in the Grove In the groves, we mark the spring as a time of beginnings and endings. Bees buzz around fragrant orange blossoms, which hint to the promise of next season’s crop—a new beginning. After months on the tree, our late-season citrus is finally reaching its peak, offering truly extraordinary flavor, and reminding us to take advantage of the fruit before they’re gone for another year. Our Heritage Navels are from a rare grove with trees that are 50-plus years old. Their deep, weathered roots no longer focus on growing the tree, but instead draw sugars and nutrients up to the fruit. Our Valencia oranges, having hung on the tree for almost a year, are at their absolute best. If you enjoy a morning glass of fresh OJ, this will be your new favorite variety. Hale Quality: A Measurable Difference. When we plan and plant a new grove, we pay attention to every detail, including the quality of the soil and the mineral content of the water. Then we carefully select the best young trees, plant them by hand, and expect to wait patiently—up to eight years—until the trees begin producing fruit that meets our standards for quality. We always allow our fruit to ripen fully on the tree (which can take up to a full year).
