It’s unfortunate the Southern, Lake Norman swimming areas were not implemented this summer; I was really looking forward to that. It seems my kids can’t get enough swimming and water play. This past June, my family made a recent week-long visit to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was our first time visiting the Grand Strand and the kids first time ever in the Atlantic Ocean. Needless to say, they had a great time.

or backyard birding enthusiasts, there aren’t many occurrences that bring a bigger smile to our faces than the sight of a dozen or more bright yellow American Goldfinches clinging to a finch feeder. When the male goldfinch feathers change from olive drab to brilliant yellow every spring, it is a sure sign that summer is coming. The American Goldfinch is the last of our backyard birds to nest each year. When the rest of our birds have nurtured and raised their fledglings and pushed them out the door to start their adult lives, the goldfinches are just about ready to set up housekeeping in our trees and bushes. It is at this time of the year that the male goldfinch dons his courting attire of bright yellow and shiny black to woo his mate. The nesting schedule of our little golden friends seems to be tied closely to the life cycle of the thistle plant. The American Goldfinch is exclusively

as gold
Backyard Nature By Joe Kaestner, Owner Wild Birds Unlimited of Huntersville a seed-eater, even feeding seeds to their young (most other backyard birds will feed insects to their babies). Their favorite seed found in nature is the thistle, a small black seed that is packed with nutrition. In addition, the thistle weeds produce down that the goldfinches use to line their nests. If possible, American Goldfinches will build their nests close to a field that contains an abundance of thistle plants. Goldfinch nesting usually occurs in July and August. They typically build their nests between three or four small upright branches in a tree. Since most of us would prefer not to have weeds growing in our yards, we
can attract goldfinches by simulating the desired environment. Nyjer is a seed grown in Africa and Asia, primarily for its oil, which is used in household cooking. The Nyjer seed looks like a thistle seed and has similar nutritional content. I don’t know if it tastes anything at all like thistle, and neither do the goldfinches. Backyard songbirds have no sense of taste or smell, so we can attract them to a feeder filled with Nyjer seeds. If we hang some downy nesting materials in our yards, as well, we can complete the simulation and provide a goldfinch-friendly environment. When feeding Nyjer to goldfinches, there are several facts to be considered. First and foremost, Nyjer has a short shelf-life. Never buy more than your birds can eat in one month; and never put more in a feeder than they will eat in one week. Secondly, because the seeds are so small, when Nyjer gets wet or moist it will clump. This restricts air-flow and often results in moldy seed. Mold is a deadly poison
to birds and must be avoided at all costs if we want our backyard birds to survive and thrive. One way to prevent mold is to place your feeders under weather guards, which are domes designed to keep your feeders dry. In addition, you should check your feeders every couple of days to see if the seed is clumping. This can be easily accomplished by turning the feeder upsidedown and then right-side-up to see if the seed is flowing well. If your seed is clumping, discard it and replace it with fresh seed.
goldfinch feeding, is that these little birds will eat from any position, including hanging upside-down. There are several types of feeders on the market that allow goldfinches to cling in any direction or hang upside-down. An “upsidedown feeder will discourage other birds and provide exclusive access to the goldfinches. If you haven’t done it already, consider setting up a goldfinchfriendly environment in your yard. Then sit back and enjoy a summer filled with flashes of yellow and happy songs.

first. Decide how much you can afford to spend in total, and then prioritize each expenditure. There are places you can save without compromising your special day. Since a live band is typically too loud for most neighborhoods and a disc jockey can be expensive, consider prerecording your favorite music and have it piped in from your iPod. Keep the guest list exclusive. The smaller your celebration, the simpler and less expensive it will be and the more intimate it will feel. Determine how many people can comfortably fit at tables in your backyard, leaving room for socializing and dancing.
Use your computer. Special touches like menus and wedding programs are easy to create and give the festivities a professional flair. Type up the details, print on nice paper and add a ribbon or other embellishment for an extra-special touch.
Flowers can really eat into a budget. Take advantage of your surroundings. Use flowers and branches (with non-offensive scents) from your garden in arrangements. Make sure table flowers don’t obstruct guests’ views or take up too much space. Placing

potted plants and flowers throughout the area will add color and charm to your yard Accent with lights. Light the way with candles, twinkle lights, lanterns or use rope lighting to line arches, windows, and doorways. Food is a matter of taste. A caterer can create a surprisingly elegant backyard menu. Take the time to establish guidelines and familiarize them with your facilities. Discuss the menu, number of guests, service timeline, and essentials like china and glassware. Don’t despair if a caterer doesn’t fit your budget – a casual buffet or barbecue is ideal in this setting. Don’t tackle hostess responsibilities yourself – this is your day to shine. Enlist a few organized and trusted friends or relatives to keep the buffet replenished or the grill hopping. continued page 14

Skip the mixed drinks. Restrict your liquor list to beer, wine and champagne. It's easier to serve, easier to figure out how much to buy – and much less expensive, since you'll avoid ending up with a bunch of barely opened bottles. Even with a big budget wedding, there are potential issues you need to consider. Before hiring any vendors study the contracts, cancellation and refund policies of service providers. Put every detail in writing. The last thing you want is to discover that a service is not included when you thought it was. Make yourself and your guests comfortable. Plan the wedding for a time of day and year that promises pleasant weather. Consider renting a canopy that partially covers the yard to keep guests out of the sun. Plan a backup location in case the weather doesn’t cooperate.
Prepare for problems. Move breakables and secure valuables; realize that your lawn may sustain some damage; and add extra insurance to your homeowner's policy.

hen you turn into Bob and Jane Avinger’s driveway, you sense this will be no ordinary property. Flanking both sides are lawns and woodland gardens perfectly scaled to create the illusion of a country road. At the top of the hill is a beautiful circular courtyard and the front entrance to Bob and Jane’s French Country estate. The mature trees, gardens and European architecture belie the fact that the developed property has only existed for the past fifteen years.

Southern Home July 2009
We had the privilege to visit the beautiful gardens on this 4-_ acre estate, which is just a short distance from Downtown Davidson. During our visit we learned of its history, design and development. Forty-two years in Davidson In 1967, Bob and Jane and their two children moved to Davidson, when Bob accepted a teaching position at Davidson College. She met her dear friend, Kay, whose husband also taught at the college; and
with all they had in common, children of the same ages, the college and their love of gardening, Jane and Kay became fast friends. They eventually opened Farm House Gardens in Statesville, which they owned and operated for a number of years. In 1980, the family spent a year in England and Jane took a horticultural course in design, which Jane described as, “Fabulous.” Once back in Davidson, Bob and Jane decided to build on their
4-1/2 acre home site, once part of a large farm before it was subdivided. A goodly portion of the 4-1/2 acres is a tree-laden hill, but the Avinger’s chose their site because the top of the hill was flat, open land, eliminating the need to cut down any trees. The two-story, Country French house was designed to encompass views of the gardens from any window. There are no steps from the house to the exterior. Jane, with her innate talent for design and Kay, with her knowledge of plants, put their heads together to create a masterpiece garden! Jane then hired Ed Davis, a landscape architect from Charlotte, and his associate, Jarred, who oversaw the installation of plants, trees, retaining walls, and pathways. Jane speaks of these two, who were young men at the time, with a great deal of fondness. Jane commented how she appreciated their ability to work closely with her and stay true to her vision. Jane set garden boundaries incorporating various natural backdrops. There is playhouse area for her grandchildren; an absolutely, adorable potting shed, dressed with a flowering vine and bordered with boxwoods, irises and several species of flowering plants; a covered, shady oasis overlooking the forest, containing a fireplace and dining area; walls; hedges; trellis’, as well as the natural slopes of the land. Down the only exterior stairway at the end of a long path is a beautiful swimming pool. A vine covered trellis welcomes you into the large pool area, which is surrounded by vegetation. Burgeoning plans In case of disease or infestation, Jane made a special effort to
plant several different varieties of each species of trees or shrubs. Other considerations for her plant selections included bloom time, water requirements and compatibility with other plant species. Jane, mindful of local wildlife that’s a vital aspect of her garden, has a fish pond, adjacent to the patio, and close by is a bird feeder, which is placed near a tree so feathered guests can feel secure while dining. As Jane told us, “Deer roam frequently, which is nice, but unfortunately they do eat some of my plants.” It was Jane’s intent to plant sizable trees and shrubs. She was excited to learn, through a friend, that a woman in Virginia had an enormous driveway flanked with mature Boxwoods. The woman no longer desired the hedges and offered them. Jane recalled, “Ed, Jarred and I hopped into their truck, drove up to Virginia, dug up the Boxwoods, drove back and planted them at the edge of the grassed area off the living room. Transplanting these mature Boxwoods should have been done in the fall, but it was summertime. We covered them with cloth for shade, kept them watered and nursed them all that summer. To our credit, they all took; we didn’t lose a one!” Jane went on to say, “I remember another trip in the truck to Athens, Georgia to purchase trees. The University of Georgia has a fabulous horticultural school and great growers in the area.” Her gardens are continually evolving. Jane commented, “It usually takes three years for a garden to become established. By the end of the third year, having planted sizable trees and shrubs, purchasing plants and accepting plants from friends, my garden rooms and paths leading to them took on a life
of their own.” Fifteen years later, her exterior rooms are incredibly inviting! For the past couple of years, she has been enjoying container gardening for succulents, placing the pots where they can flourish. When asked if she had an herb garden, Jane said, “No, I do not have an herb garden, but I do have herbs planted all over.” Jane informed us, “I have been a member of the Davidson Garden Club for years and I am also an active member of the Wing Haven Gardens and Bird Sanctuary in Charlotte, a three-acre organic garden combining formal gardens with natural woodlands, pools, birdbaths, and fountains, which attract birds of all kinds. They also offer programs on horticulture and ecology. Advice to New Gardeners Jane recommends, “Attend symposiums”. Davidson has one every year, inviting speakers from
all over. Each year has a theme and the speakers’ talks relate to the particular theme. She advises new gardeners to read about gardening, visit other peoples gardens, as well
as public gardens. “When you see something you like and think it would look good at your front door, do some research before you buy and plant it to make sure it will do well in that spot. Join your city’s garden club”. Jane’s last bit of advice, “Enjoy gardening”.
Planting New Seeds Jane has put into practice her own advice and has enjoyed her gardens for the past fifteen years. Understandably, it is with a bit of sadness that she and Bob have listed their fabulous property for sale. However, they are looking forward to moving two blocks closer to downtown Davidson where they will begin another chapter in their lives, but continue to live in the city they so love, attend their same church and be with their same friends. Lightheartedly, Jane said, “We are downsizing and preparing for our old age. We will be moving into a smaller, vintage house built in 1926.” She didn’t discuss the gardens, but we know she will transform her new _-acre property into another garden of paradise, and we look forward to visiting Jane and Bob again to view their new gardens! Southern Home Magazine wishes them all the best!

Fire Ants: dealing with those uninvited guests By Bethany Hauf Fire ants are territorial insects. They are not only a nuisance to your property; they can harm you, your children and your pets. Being able to identify fire ants, where they live, treatments for prevention, working with your neighbors for season-long control, and what to do if you are stung are all very important elements to educate yourself and family on in order to be fire antfree.

Identifying Fire Ants and Their Mounds Fire ants are small insects. They range in size from 1/16 to 1/5 of an inch long and are dark red and brown. A fire ant mound can be identified by its dome-shaped, soilbased structure that forms the upper most part of a fire ant colony. Treating fire ant stings Fire ants bite and then inflict painful stings, which cause small blisters or pustules on the skin, typically up to 24 to 48 hours later. If you, your child, or your pet is stung by fire ants, it is important to follow first aid guidelines and to seek medical attention immediately if there is any suspicion of an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions include severe swelling, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea,
headaches and sweating. If blisters occur, make sure they are clean and avoid any action that might further irritate the area, such as scratching or rubbing. Rinse the sting area with cold water and gentle soap to avoid infection and elevate the affected area of the body.
You can use a cool compress or ice to reduce swelling and alleviate pain and itching. Summer is the season to enjoy the outdoors. Stop fire ants before they takeover to ensure your back yard summer activities are safe and fun.

myrtle beach Carolina’s Family Fun!
The Myrtle Beach area, popularly known as the Grand Strand, is comprised of 12 cities along the South Carolina coast. The area is home to world-class golf, 60 miles of sandy beaches, exciting entertainment, and numerous family attractions. The Myrtle Beach area presents the quintessential vacation experience welcoming nearly 14 million visitors annually. My husband and three boys, ages 7,10, and 12, had the opportunity to visit Myrtle Beach this June, and share our experience with the readers of Southern Home Magazine. If you have never been to Myrtle Beach before, it really is a great family vacation destination. We were pleased to stay at the 33 acre, gated, oceanfront Myrtle Beach Resort that offers vacation condominium rentals by the week. They have nearly 700 feet of sandy beaches, a water park with 375-foot lazy river, four outdoor pools, three health spas complete with steam 24

room, saunas and Jacuzzis, lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, game room and free wireless internet access. There are several property management companies that have units for rent within the resort. I have to say the company we went through, Myrtle Beach Resort Vacations, was top notch. They were so helpful and eager to assist us in creating the perfect family vacation. Having never stayed in a condominium while vacationing, the experience turned out to be a big plus. Taking a family of five out for breakfast, lunch and dinner can get real expensive real quick. The full kitchen allowed us to cook and eat in for many of our meals. We did go out to dinner a few nights, after all, it is a vacation and eating out was an adventure in itself. The area boasts many themed restaurants
and water front dinning. Although the weather is mild year round, June, July and August are prime months for summer activities. The beach is certainly the Myrtle Beach area’s No#1 attraction, but the fun does not end with surf and sand. The Grand Strand offers a wide range of unique attractions and ex-
citing entertainment options. I had planned a week-long itinerary of action packed adventures, although, if I had to do it again, I think I’d have scheduled fewer activities in lieu of more beach and resort time. Not only would it save money but the kids were content just to play at the beach or at the resort’s lazy river pool and enjoyed the other activities they have on site for the kids. We are a family of five but for the purposes of this article, I have provided a sample itinerary ,based on our experience, and provided pricing for a family of four. Day One: Our first full day in Myrtle Beach was spent mostly at the beach. The sand and water were both clean and the water temperature was surprisingly warm. You can rent chairs and umbrellas at the beach, but for $30 per day rental charge, we brought our own. You don’t have to worry about finding a nice beach. The Grand Strand is one long stretch and no matter where you are the beach and water are the same throughout the area. Later in the day, we went grocery shopping for the week. Having to do it again, we would have packed
a cooler with condiments and premade a few casseroles to save time and money. That night, we went to the beachside pavilion/bar at the Myrtle Beach Resort. They have a DJ playing a variety of music every night. The setting is family friendly and we all enjoyed getting out on
My husband and three boys went to NASCAR Speed Park. With seven racetracks, miniature golf and rock climbing walls they reported having a great time. In the meantime, I was having a bit of R&R at a great little spa called Always In Touch Massage. It’s just right down the road from the resort. They offered a

day we relaxed by the pool and lazy river. That night we went to Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament. The theatrics were great and the dinner was surprisingly good. Although the cost cut into the budget, the price of admission includes dinner, a cost worth the fun and convenience of not having to cook every night! Day Five: The morning hours were spent at the beach. The kids never seem to tire of this, which is great. It is nice to just sit and watch them play and they sleep like babies at night after all the sun and surf. Later that night we went to the Ripley’s Aquarium. They claim it’s South Carolina’s most visited attraction, and I can see why. It wasn’t as big as I expected but it was a good take and I’d recommend it to anyone. On our last day, I thought it would be nice to see the natural side of Myrtle Beach. We all took a Blue Wave Eco Tour at Captain Dicks Marina. This was a nice change from all the man made coasters, cars, and slides. Being with my family and viewing the wildlife and natural beauty of the area brought peace to my heart. Later that night we went
and saw the Legends In Concert, which is just right down the road from the resort. I wasn’t sure if the kids would appreciate the show, but they were able to recognize the classic music and had a great time. Day Six: Our last day we reached deep into the pocketbook and went to the new Freestyle Music Park. It’s a large amusement-type park with a rock n’ roll theme. The music is pumping and the energy runs high. Needless to say, the kids loved it! That night we visited the pavilion at the resort for one last spin on the dance floor. For a week, we had thought of our condominium as home and we were all a little sad to leave. We took many photos and this family trip will hold fond memories for all of us. If, or I should say when, we go back to Myrtle Beach I’d love to reserve the same unit to give the kids a sense of familiarity when we come back. I’m not a spokesperson for Myrtle Beach but if you have the opportunity, I’d truly recommend this destination especially for families with younger children.

Whether you want to save energy dollars, be more comfortable or improve energy efficiency to help the environment, a COOL ROOF is something everyone can get excited about! So what is a COOL ROOF? Generally, it is a roofing system that has a high reflective value (sun bounces off the surface) and a high admittance value (heat doesn’t absorb into the surface and then into the house). This is the same premise for wearing white, instead of black, in the summer. This is the primary concept of a Solar Reflective Index which is a new measurement used with the Energy Star rating to determine the energy saving value of the product.

t’s not something we like to think about, but property crime is something that affects millions of people each year. The latest data available from the FBI shows that in 2007, there were an estimated 9.8 million property crime offenses across the country, which resulted in over $17 billion in losses.
What can you do to protect your home? The Burglary Prevention Council recommends that you: • Keep all doors and windows closed and securely fastened. • Secure sliding glass doors with a metal rod or piece of plywood in the track and install vertical bolts. • Always lock the door to an attached garage. • Make your residence appear occupied by using timers on lights, radios and televisions even when no one is home. • Install outdoor lighting.
• Never leave clues that you are away on a trip. Have a trusted neighbor collect mail and newspapers while you are away so delivered items do not accumulate. You can also ask a neighbor to park in your driveway or parking place to make it appear that you are present. • Keep shrubbery trimmed away from entrances and walkways they provide a hiding place for burglars who need only a minute to break in through a window or door. • Organize a community watch program to protect your neighborhood. An alert community is a safe community.
• Hollow-core doors are easier to break through, so they should be replaced with solid wood, fiberglass or steel doors. • Make sure that the door hinges are on the inside, rather than the outside. This prevents would-be intruders from removing the pins and pulling the door out of the frame. • Invest in high-quality deadbolt locks for all exterior doors. • If you have double-hung windows, insert a metal bar in the track to prevent opening.
