BOONE COUNTY FAIR
2021
Welcome to the 2021 Boone County Fair
HIP HIP HOORAY!!! We’re back here in 2021 at the Boone County Fair for six fun filled days! I would like to personally welcome everyone back. It’s been a challenging year, to say the least, in planning ahead since a lot of what we do has to happen months before the fair opens. Thank goodness the CDC guidelines on wearing masks have been relaxed so masks will not be required at the fair. If you feel you would like to wear one please do. There will still be hand sanitizer stations throughout the grounds. When we ordered the show tickets in the Spring, the CDC guidelines were calling for limited capacity and social distancing so that’s when we decided to go with general admission seating in the grandstand for all the shows. We’re trying our best to keep up with the ever-changing COVID-19 situation. Our ultimate goal is for everyone to be safe and have a great time at the fair. Speaking of a great time we have another wonderful fair planned for you and your family. Tuesday the Grange Food Stand will start at 6 a.m. with a delicious breakfast. At noon we will have the flag raising ceremony followed by harness racing. We will also crown a new Fair Queen that evening. We have a lot of great entertainment lined up this year in the
grandstand. Wednesday and Thursday we will have truck and tractor pulls and Friday, Bull riding. Saturday night is Diamond Rio followed up by the Demo Derby’s on Sunday. We have several free acts throughout the grounds, All Star Stunt Dog Show, The hilarious Pork Chop Revue, Mr D’s House of Magic, Zoli’s Chainsaw Wood Carvings and more. There are also lots of great free shows at the Entertainment Pavilion day and night. On Wednesday, special guest Orion Samuelson will be live at the Pavilion from noon to 1 p.m. Please check out our new website this year, www.boonecountyfair.com, for a complete schedule and more information on the various events and such. We have Skinner’s Amusements for all the thrilling rides. Plus lots of displays to be enjoyed from home grown to handmade. As I write this letter I’m beginning to smell all of the delicious fair foods we can’t wait to enjoy. Don’t forget kids, Wednesday and Thursday we have Midland States Bank’s Kids Day games at 10 a.m. Good old fashioned fun! With reduced midway rides in the afternoon. Also Thursday is Seniors Day for those 65 and older, it’s free admission to the fair. Come one, come all and hope you are as anxious to see us as we are to see you!!
Many Thanks, Lyle Lee, President
The only time vehicular accidents are encouraged…
The Demolition Derby fills the Grandstand with screaming fans while each driver tries to hit more often than being hit. ANNE EICKSTADT Boone County Fair

Boone County alpacas are trailblazers in Illinois By Anne Eickstadt EDITOR
In 2017 the Boone County Fair made history by holding an alpaca show. That was the first time alpacas had been seen at a county fair in Illinois. That first show was an Open Show – it included both male and female alpaca as well as both breeds of alpaca – Suri with their long waving locks and Huacaya with their short, puffy, cotton-ball look. In 2020, they had hoped to expand the show and judge males and females, Huacaya and Suri separately. We’ll see what happens in 2021. The alpacas are judged on formation, halter, showmanship, performance, and costume. The obstacle course always brings great amusement, as the alpacas do not always want to obey their handlers and balk, back, and obstinately walk around an obstacle. However, the costume contest is the real hit of the show when the alpaca and their handlers wear matching
costumes. “My son Christopher, age 12, is showing two alpaca, Jelly and Annie, at the Fair. You do not have to own an alpaca to enter a show,” said Vicky Donley of Alpaca Pines in Poplar Grove. You can borrow an alpaca to show. The alpaca will be arriving at the Fair on Wednesday so they can acclimate to be ready for the show on Sunday at 9 a.m. “We have also added a fleece segment to the alpaca show. Contestants will bring in two ounces of fiber and the judge will determine its quality. Those who cannot make it to the Fair can send in a sample of alpaca fiber and have it judged. A couple of kids from my 4-H Fiber Friendzy group will be showing alpaca. Some of them are making alpaca fiber projects for the 4-H projects barn. “We are also adding an informational section to our alpaca tent to educate the public on these wonderful animals.”

Mr. D’s Magic and Illusion Show Mr. D, also known as Dirk Spence, was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, and moved to Tinley Park, Ill., at the age of 5. He performed his first magic shows at 8-years-old beginning with performances at his church and in his neighborhood. Like most kids do as they grow up, Dirk lost interest in his childhood hobby -- but then some real magic happened. When he was in his late twenties, a friend gave him the 1945 Chevy truck known as “Hard Times.” During the long process of refurbishing the truck, the magic “bug” bit him, giving him the idea of doing magic shows from the back of this unique vehicle. Was it a crazy idea or was it destiny? Maybe
performing was in his blood. Mr. D’s grandfather, the late Jimmy Spence, performed in the early 1900s as a Scottish soloist with the traveling vaudeville circuit, sometimes working at the same events as Harry Houdini. Regardless of how or why, it wasn’t long before Mr. D left his factory job and made magic a passion and a profession. His love for magic and for bringing smiles and happiness to children of all ages has made him one of Chicago’s busiest magicians. Fast-forwarding to today, Mr. D is proud to say that 2021 is his 39th year providing unique magical entertainment.

Diamond Rio headlines at the Boone County Fair on Saturday Diamond Rio is an American country music band. The band was founded in 1982 as an attraction for the Opryland USA theme park in Nashville, Tennessee, and was originally known as the Grizzly River Boys, then the Tennessee River Boys. The band was founded by Matt Davenport, Danny Gregg, and Ty Herndon. After undergoing several membership changes in its initial years, the band has consisted of the same six members since 1989: Marty Roe (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Gene Johnson (mandolin, guitar, fiddle, tenor vocals), Jimmy Olander (lead guitar, banjo), Brian Prout (drums), Dan Truman (keyboards), and Dana Williams (bass guitar, baritone vocals). After taking the name Diamond Rio, the band was signed to Arista Nashville and debuted in 1991 with the single “Meet in the Middle”, which made them the first band ever to send a debut single to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. The band charted 32 more singles between then and 2006, including four more that reached No. 1: “How Your Love Makes Me Feel” (1997), “One More Day” (2001), “Beautiful Mess” (2002), and “I Believe” (2003). Diamond Rio has recorded nine studio albums, four Greatest Hits compilations, and an album of Christmas music. Three of the band’s albums have achieved RIAA platinum certification in the United States. In addition, Diamond Rio has received four Group of the Year awards from the Country Music Association, two Top Vocal Group awards from the Academy of Country Music, and one Grammy Award. The band is known for its vocal harmonies, varied instrumentation, and near-exclusive use of only its own membership on recordings instead of session musicians. Their sound was originally defined by mainstream country, bluegrass, and rock influences, but later albums drew more influence from Christian country music and country pop.

“Our pro-bull riding is a sanctioned event, so the cowboys will earn national points,” Tom Ratcliffe said. “The clowns are great and it’s a lively, on the edge of your seat entertaining show.” Next Level Pro-Bill Riding will be at the Boone County Fair grandstand at 7 p.m. on Friday. American bull riding has been called “the most dangerous eight seconds in sports.” To receive a score, the rider must stay on top of the bull for eight seconds with the use of one hand gripped on a bull rope tied behind the bull’s forelegs. Touching the bull or themselves with the free hand, or failing to reach the eight-second mark, results in a no-score ride. Depending on the bull riding organization and the contest, up to four judges might judge the rider and four judge the bull on their performance. For most organizations, a perfect score is 100 points. In general, most professional riders score in the neighborhood of the mid-70s to the high 80s.
