ADDISON — A 35-yearold Addison man charged with murdering his wife and stabbing his teenage stepson on July 26, 2013, is facing 26 to 90 years in prison after he pleaded guilty on Friday, Jan. 15 to two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing the 39-year-old while she slept. He also used the knife on his 15-year-old stepson who attempted to step in and help his mother during the incident. Kurtis Worley, of Addison, pleaded guilty in court on Jan. 15, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Nancy Donahoe, who stated that Worley “repeatedly stabbed his 39-year-old wife, Martha Worley, in the head and body while she slept around 3 a.m. July 26, 2013, inside their home on North Craig Place.” One report said she had been stabbed as many as 10 times in the head. Worley also cut the throat of his 15-year-old stepson, caus-

The report said the young man tried to intervene after he and his 12-year-old brother heard their mother scream. “The boys heard their mother screaming and began banging on the doors,” Donahoe said. “Worley opened the bedroom door and slashed (the 15-yearold’s) throat as they pleaded with him to stop. Worley slammed the door shut and the boys got two knives from the kitchen and fled the house as they called for help.” Police arrived to find the boys outside, still on the phone with 911, the oldest boy applying pressure to the wound on his throat. Inside the home, police reportedly found blood smears on the walls of the hallways and a washroom, before breaking down Worley’s bedroom door, where they found Martha Worley lying in the bed in a pool of blood with brain matter exposed. A 1.9-inch stab wound to Martha Worley’s head allegedly left the broken tip of the knife lodged in her brain and was likely the cause for her death, declared later that evening. Worley’s stepson had emergency surgery on his pharynx and was released from the hospital several days later. Police said Worley was intoxicated at the time of the incident, a fact he later admitted. “This morning, Kurtis Worley took responsibility for the mur-

der of his wife and brutal attack of his stepson,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. “This has been a very disturbing case for all those involved. My thoughts and prayers go out to Martha’s surviving family and friends. Her tragic death has been a jolt to those who knew her, and it is my sincerest hope that today’s proceedings will in some way help them move on from this horrible chapter in their lives.” Worley’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 25, at which time a sentencing hearing will be scheduled.

or the second year in a row, Timothy Christian High School held its ReNEW term between semesters coming out of the holiday break. One of the classes offered this year was “Walking Alongside those with Special Needs.” In this class Timothy Christian students interacted with special needs individuals from the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association. To say the least, Timothy students walked away impressed and enlightened by their experience in the all-day class, which was held over a week-and-a-half timeframe. “It was an amazing experience,” said Timothy junior

Marina DalCerro. “It was one of the best classes I have taken so far with ReNEW. It was an eye-opener.” DalCerro went to the Naperville Western DuPage Special Recreation Association. “They show you how much happiness they have in their lives,” she said. “One of the kids was a non-verbal communicator and he was the happiest kid there. He was so happy to be with friends. You realize what we might think is out of the ordinary is very normal for them and you see how much they love life. We hung out with them and really got to know each other.” Among the activities held at DalCerro’s location were dancing and arts and crafts. Timothy sophomore Emily DeBoer and her group went to the Glen Ellyn location. “This was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had,” DeBoer said. “It’s incredible to see the involvement of the participants. It was amazing to spend time with them and

It was an amazing experience to the point that I would like to volunteer over the summer and on Saturdays and Sundays and I would like to apply for a job there.” Both DalCerro and DeBoer came away impressed with Timothy’s second ReNEW term. “This year I got the one class I wanted,” said DalCerro. “It was incredible.” DeBoer added: “I love ReNEW. It has been a really cool experience. The whole aspect of getting out of your comfort zone with these different classes is appealing. It’s a nice change of pace.”

Addison Jan. 14 Norma E. Alberttis, 56, of Addison, was arrested at a dental office in the 1-100 block of W. Lake St. at around 2:38 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. Police said Alberttis grabbed a phone from the victim and used profanity towards the victim at the dental office. Jan. 11 Adrian Adamczyk, 24, of Streamwood, was arrested near Lincoln and Addison at around 1:20 p.m. Police said Adamczyk had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department. Jan. 10 James Langone Jr., 60, of Addison, was arrested at a local store in the 1000 block of Rohl-

wing Road at around 1:55 p.m. and charged with retail theft and battery. Police said Langone Jr. took merchandise from the store without paying, and pushed a store employee as he exited the store. Jan. 8 • Eric D. Armstrong, 38, of Palatine, was arrested near Army Trail and Swift at around 2:31 a.m. Police said he was reportedly driving against the flow of traffic, disobeying a traffic control device, and driving without his lights on. After he struck a median, Armstrong was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving too fast for conditions, no insurance, and driving without lights when required. • Jeanette M. Lemak, 50, of Roselle, was arrested near Lake and Rohlwing at around 8:30 a.m. Police said Lemak had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department. BENSENVILLE — Last week, the Independent learned that a Village Trustee from Bensenville had been arrested and charged with misdemeanor retail theft after reportedly leaving a Walmart store in Villa Park without paying for some items she had placed on the lower rack of her shopping cart, police said. Arrested on Dec. 11, Susan

V. Janowiak, 61, is scheduled to appear in DuPage County court mid-week. She is accused of taking items including jeans, gifts cards, bags, boxes and wreaths, with a total value of less than $300, according to police. Apparently, she paid for some of the items in her cart, but failed to pay for the items on the lower rack. “It was an honest mistake,” Janowiak told officials. A Bensenville resident since 1974, Janowiak is a former village clerk and president of the Park Board.

acebook is an online community and in being such has developed certain (often unwritten) rules that its users follow. While some rules are easy to understand and abide by, certain Facey situations leave me unsure of what Facebehavior protocol is called for in response to my scrolling. Posting photos is a FB mainstay. But what do you do when a person posts a photo that is clearly sideways or, worse yet, upside-down? The inverted problem is multiplied 1080 if the post is a video. The person posting must be aware their image is not aligned with the rest of the world – unless they are standing on their head, which I suppose is a possibility. If a sideways-posted photo looks particularly interesting, I pull it to my desktop and rotate it myself so it is in its full upright (normal) position. But, even if I like the photo, I don’t hit the like button because that would be like promoting bad behavior. Here’s the thing: rotating a photo on Facebook is not only feasible, it’s as easy as pressing, well, the rotate button. It’s as

simple as that. Sigh. Next in popularity to photo postings are birthday greetings. Each day Facebook tells us who among our friends is experiencing a 24-hour b-day celebration. As a FB friend or acquaintance it is our duty to come up with a unique and heartfelt birthday wish for each of our 537 friends. Some days this means coming up with more than one unique and heartfelt message because no two birthday greetings should ever be the same. When I’m having a noncreative unbirthday-wishing sort of day, I beat myself up for the blasé and boring greeting of, “Happy birthday, insert name here.” Surely the person notes my lack of sincerity and enthusiasm. On those days, I am a birthday greeting failure and do

a headstand and look at myself upside-down in the mirror with shame. Another birthday conundrum occurs when it is your big day. You receive dozens or perhaps hundreds of birthday hellos, wishes, hallelujahs and other assorted salutations. What to do? Do you thank each greeter personally by responding to their message with a message of your own? If you choose this route, you are saddled to your Facey account for a hefty portion of the day, and that doesn’t feel like a happy birthday in my world. Instead do you simply like each of the greetings individually, or do you take it one step further and wait until the day after your day and send one generic thank you message to the entire group of greeters? I don’t know the correct answer. I’m just posing the question because it’s weighed heavy on my mind for some time. Sharing the agony lessens it, somehow. Finally (you knew it was coming) let’s talk politics. Everyone else is. It’s okay to have opinions and it’s even okay to post about them because I can scroll

through rather quickly, or block repeat offenders if I choose. Trouble (for me) is that not every posting is factual. There are numerous “news” websites that post satire. Satire is not the truth. It uses exaggeration, irony and sarcasm to create humor. There wouldn’t be a problem with this, if people understood that not everything on the Internet is true (it’s not?) nor is it meant to be. But, many good and trusting FB souls don’t know that – or choose to look past that – and post and repost and like and comment on satire as though it were the truth. And I cringe a little bit again and wonder why I’m even scrolling – again. And then I am embarrassed – again. But this time for myself and the things I choose do and the time I waste scrolling and wondering if the plural of faux pas shouldn’t be faux pases. But it isn’t. Trust me. I looked it up on the Internet.

creative and fulfilling. It uses my skills and I feel valued.” Whatever rings your bell. Do small things to ease in to a new career. Research. Write resumes. Network. Connect. Submit your applications. Celebrate each step you take. Be kind along the way and know it is all a learning process. Every interview is a stepping-stone. Stay in the energy of congratulations and celebration knowing that each step is taking where you want to go. That’s all life is, a series of steps. When we can relax and not be so hard on ourselves, it makes the present more enjoyable as we envision, and work towards, what it is we want next. Your todays will be more fun too.

Tips for goal setting and new habits in the new year

ow’s the new year going for you? Looking ahead with excitement? Let this be the year you see with new eyes and a revived attitude. Make every day a clean slate as you let go of old habits and embrace the new. Easier said than done, I know. Here are some tips to make it easier. Be nice to yourself. There is a lot of mental exercise involved when taking on a new habit and it applies to everything not just physical fitness. No chewing yourself out if you “mess up.” No more negative self-talk. Setting a goal is an occasion in itself. Achieving a goal is a process. Remember that. Be kind as if you were a baby learning to walk or a child with a new bike. Celebrate everything. If you went a day (an hour) without coffee/sweets/alcohol/ bread/being rude/whatever, give yourself an inner congratulation. Everything in life occurs in baby steps so acknowledge each step

along the way. If you made it to the gym, YAY YOU! If you didn’t, no berating. (See Step 1.) Think small. What I mean by this is to honor small benchmarks. Most of us are not cold turkey leapers. ADDISON — Addison Trail senior Nino Conte was recently named as a recipient of a Chick Evans Scholarship for Caddies. According to the website, Chick Evans Scholarship for Caddies applicants must have a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. Finalists are selected and go through a rigorous interview process. The scholarship is awarded from the Evans Scholars Foundation, a charitable trust that provides full, four-year tuition and housing college scholarships to deserving caddies. Conte has been a caddie at Medinah Country Club for about five years. He ADDISON TRAIL SENIOR said he used to play golf NINO CONTE recreationally when he was younger, and he plans to play again in the future. “What I’ve learned most through being a caddie is patience,” he said. “It’s a fun job, and I enjoy being on the golf course.” He was thrilled when he learned he had received the scholarship to live in the Evans Scholarship House at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Nino is looking to see whether he can transfer the scholarship to Indiana University in Bloomington, where he plans to pursue a major in finance or accounting. Addison Trail boys basketball team defeats Maine East Blazers making strides in second half of season By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Addison Trail boys basketball team recorded a recent 42-40 come-from-behind win over Maine East in non-conference action. Addison Trail found itself down 14-8 after the first quarter and 31-21 at halftime. However, the Blazers tightened things up on the defensive end and held Maine East to only nine second-half points, including two points in the fourth quarter. Addison Trail outscored Maine East 12-2 in the fourth quarter. Eric Grygo had a doubledouble for Addison Trail with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Nick Fugarino added 10 points, which included two 3-pointers. Stevan Jones had seven points

and two steals, while Jack Kalbas has six points. Nick Conrad finished with seven assists. Grygo added four assists and two steals. Addison Trail shot 43.8 percent from the field. In earlier recent action, the Blazers downed Fenton in a non-conference game and lost to Proviso East in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play. Over the holidays Addison Trail went 2-2 at the Centralia tournament, losing to Champaign Central and Belleville West and defeating Sullivan and Salem. “Fenton was one of our better games of the year,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons earlier last week. “We also had a good effort against Proviso East, but we made too many mistakes, especially in the turnover department.” Lyons also was pleased with how his team fared over the holidays. “That was our third year going to Centralia,” he

said. “The kids really enjoy it. They get to play in a cool environment at Centralia and they are together to do team-building things. It’s been a good experience the last three years and we’re looking forward to going there again next year. We challenged the guys down in Centralia and talked about competing at a high level and doing what it takes to have sustained success. We saw that in our game against Salem and then in the games against Fenton and Proviso East. Our energy was better and our focus was better. I’ll never question these guys being ready to play and that’s a good thing. That’s something we expect from Day 1. I like the energy we are playing with right now. Our key is to get back to doing some of the fundamental things and focusing on the mental part of the game, which costs us sometimes at certain times.” Lyons noted Addison Trail

We just struggled to put the ball in the basket.” Fenton trailed 11-0 at the beginning of the game against Aurora Central. “That takes the air out of the balloon when that happens,” said Anderson. “It makes it a lot harder to shoot a 3-pointer with your feet ready when you are down 11 points early.” Anderson saw the opposite occur in the win against Chicago Academy. “We had a great shooting night against Chicago Academy,” he said. “We’re going to keep plugging away. I’m happy with how hard the girls are playing and how they run the offense. We’re getting shots we like to shoot.”

Anderson cited continued strong play from Courtney Susmarski. “Courtney has kind of taken over for us,” said Anderson. “She had 14 of our 19 points the other night. Her scoring average has gone up dramatically. She looks to take over from a scoring standpoint. She’s tough to stop. If a team is playing zone, we can put her outside because she’s our second-best 3-point shooter. She’s also hard to guard under the basket. She goes to the freethrow line a lot. She’s up to 10 or 11 points a game.” Anderson noted Fenton’s schedule is rather full the next three weeks. “We have a busy three weeks coming up,” he said. “It’s like a whirlwind. We’re very anxious to get into the second half of the conference season. We’re looking forward to seeing these teams a second time so our girls can see how much they’ve improved. And hopefully that positive vibe will affect how the ball goes in the basket. In the games where we shoot a decent percentage we do well. We’ve been playing a lot better lately, but we need to keep working on the ball going in the basket.”

He always gives us energy

The Maine East game was part of the tournament. “We had hosted our own tournament the past few years before Christmas and dropped it this year,” said Lyons. “This allows us to still get a few more games. When the opportunity came up to get into that tournament we jumped on it. It’s something new and we get to play teams we don’t traditionally see. We’ll be playing a lot of basketball the next two weeks.” The Maine East win bumped the Blazers up to 8-5 overall (Addison Trail was 2-2 through its first four WSC Gold games.

The Fenton girls basketball team might not have the most sightly win-loss record. The Bison were 3-15 overall and 0-6 in Metro Suburban Conference West Division play through their first 18 games. But Fenton coach Tim Anderson is looking well beyond numbers on a piece of paper. “We’ve been up and down, but we have made progress since the beginning of the year and we are continuing to get better,” he said. “The big thing is we are still struggling to put the ball in the basket.” In recent games, Fenton dropped a 48-29 game to St. Viator and also lost 43-26 to Elmwood Park. The Bison defeated Chicago Academy 64-24 and lost to Aurora Central Catholic by a 49-19 count. “With the exception of the Chicago Academy game, the scores kind of tell the story,” said Anderson. “We’ve had

The wins and high place finishes continue to pile up for the Willowbrook wrestling team. Through mid-last week, the Warriors were 19-4 overall in duals and 3-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold action. Willowbrook also recently finished 10th out of 25 teams at the Sycamore tournament. “We are battling despite injuries,” said Willowbrook coach Brandon Murphy. “We have been without multiple wrestlers, but we are continuing to push forward. We only brought 11 of the possible 14 weight classes to Sycamore. This made it difficult to score in the top tier team point-wise.” On the individual front, numerous Willowbrook records have fallen so far this season. Senior standout Matt Rowland has broken multiple school records, including the all-time program wins record. Rowland

Rowland also established the all-time takedown record previously held by two-time state place-winner Antoine Burns. He lost to the defending Class 2A state champion in the finals. “Matt and Jack are constantly working toward reaching their goals,” said Murphy. “They push each other every day and they use these midseason tournaments as a gauge to see where they are at technically and conditioning-wise. They both make adjustments after every tournament. I can’t wait for the state series to start for them.” Rowland was 35-1 at 170 pounds and also has a second-place finish at the prestigious Dvorak invitational to his credit. The Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team came back from the holiday break and recorded a West Suburban Conference crossover win against Proviso West.

“The team looked good,” said Addison Trail-Willowbrook coach Neil Wahlgren. “Some of our guys swam in different events and they had a lot of fun.” Wahlgren said the team has been hard at work getting prepared for the tail end of the season. “We are putting all the pieces together as we come down the home stretch,” he said. Addison Trail-Willowbrook was slated to face WSC Gold division foe Hinsdale South

recently and will swim against Morton Friday in another conference meet and will then head to the Shepard invitational Saturday. “We have some tough meets coming up,” said Wahlgren. “We’re excited to see where we place overall at Shepard. I think it is going to be a good end of the season. We have a chance to do well in some of these meets.” Addison Trail-Willowbrook continues to be led by Willowbrook student Ethan Wal-

lace, who is a sprint freestyle swimmer. “Ethan, for sure, has been real strong for us,” said Wahlgren. “He has a chance this year in either the 50 or 100. Some days it’s the 50 for him and others it’s the 100. The hard part is with the 50 everything has to be perfect.” Wahlgren also has been thrilled with Wallace’s leadership this season. “Ethan is a good role model,” he said. “He shows the other guys how hard you have to work in practice.” The team also has received

among the strongest leaders on the team. They always are in the corner for their teammates. It has been a true pleasure having them in the lineup this season.” Murphy also cited strong work from senior Ramon Aguilar. “Ramon came through with a big win (recently) in our home quad,” he said. “He kept fighting and eventually wore his opponent down and came up with the pin.” Willowbrook recently hosted WSC Gold Division foe Downers Grove South for senior night.

With these younger guys we have the potential to be a strong team the next few years.” Wahlgren noted the Shepard invitational has a pair of frosh-soph relays on the lineup card. “Those are extra events and we’ll get our guys together and try to win those events and show what the future looks like,” he said.

Conference titles and the Fenton wrestling team have gone hand in hand in recent times. The Bison added to their collection with a recent 38-29 victory over Riverside-Brookfield to win the Metro Suburban Conference title for the fourth year in a row and seventh time in the last nine seasons. Earlier, Fenton downed Glenbard South to inch closer to the title. The R-B win pushed Fenton to 17-3 overall in duals. In the R-B win, Angel Nava (145 pounds), Dylan Butts (182), Joe Garcia (220) and Isaiah Brock (285) won their matches by pinfall. Sebastian Kaspar earned a major decision at 120, while Kyle Higgins did the same at 170. Kacper Piskorz (132) and Nikko Castaneda (160) also scored wins. Dan Warren was applauded by Fenton coach Brian Hastings for his effort at 138 against a highly ranked R-B opponent. In an earlier triangular meet, Fenton hosted Elmwood Park and IC Catholic Prep and scored two victories. In a 41-16 win over Elmwood Park, Kaspar (120 pounds) and Tim Wolf (182) led the way. On vault, Addison Trail’s Kennedy O’Neill won the event with an 8.6. Willowrook’s Katherine Gibson was second with an 8.3, while Addison Trail’s Madalyn Rumps was third with an 8.2. The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team shook off the sting of a pair of recent overtime losses to record a 56-49 Metro Suburban Conference West Division victory over Elgin St. Edward. The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 10-7 overall and the Knights finished their first time through the division with a 2-4 record. In earlier action, IC Catholic Prep dropped a tough 82-80 non-conference game to Lisle in triple overtime. The Knights led 15-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 32-30 heading into halftime. Lisle 13-12 in the third quarter and 17-16 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Austin Reed led the Knights with 22 points, eight rebounds, four steals and four assists. He made four 3-pointers and shot 4-for-4 from the freethrow line. Jordan Rowell, in his first action of the basketball season, added 15 points and 12 rebounds. Ramirez had 11 points. Sutton also had 11 points and made three 3-pointers. Garrett Cheng had nine rebounds and five assists, while Lyles had two blocked shots. The Knights also lost 63-61 in overtime to Aurora Central Catholic in a MSC West game. Burrows led the Knights

with 28 points, which included seven 3-pointers. Sutton had 11 points (2 three-pointers), while Ramirez had eight points (2 three-pointers). Sutton added five assists, while Lyles had seven rebounds. The Knights made nine 3-pointers in the game. “I wish we were on the other end of those overtime games, but they still were fun,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell earlier last week. Tyrrell noted in the Lisle game, his team trailed by nine points with under two minutes to play in regulation, but two Reed 3-pointers and a 3-pointer from Sutton knotted things up.
