District 88 scores high on ISBE ‘Report Card’

According to the latest newsletter issued by School District 88, Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton announced the results of the District’s 2015-16 Illinois Report Card. “At District 88, our mission is to work for the continuous improvement of student achievement,” Helton said in his column. “Each and every day, District 88 works to build positive futures for its students inside the classroom and beyond. The results of the 2015-16 Illinois Report Card show the successes of District 88 and reflect the efforts of staff, Board of Education members, students, parents/guardians and community members.” Highlights of District 88’s 2015-16 report card include: • Graduation rate: District 88’s graduation rate continues to be above the state level. District 88’s four-year graduation rate is 86 percent, and the district’s five-year graduation rate is 91 percent. • Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam: Helton said District 88 had the largest growth in PARCC scores in DuPage County, in terms of the percentage of students who approached, met or exceeded standards on the PARCC exam. Helton continued to praise the staff, Board and community for the positive report. “We had a student-participation rate of 98 percent on the ELA portion of the exam and 96 percent on the Math portion,” he said. “The improvement in our scores truly is a testament to our staff, students, parents, guardians, Board of Education members and community members.” ISBE to offer SAT exam at no cost for juniors The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) listened to District 88’s concerns regarding the PARCC exam, Helton said, adding that the ISBE will now provide the College Board’s SAT exam, including a writing component, at no cost to all public high school juniors this year. The ISBE said the SAT aligns with the Illinois Learning Standards and provides a college-reportable score for admissions purposes. It means Illinois high schools will transition from the ACT to the SAT as the state assessment. How many freshmen will graduate? Another component of the report card was how likely it is that the freshmen at a school will graduate in four years. ISBE reported that District 88 is above the state level in terms of the number of freshmen who are on track to graduate. District 88

During its Oct. 31 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education thanked Addison Trail Principal Michael Bolden and Willowbrook Principal Dan Krause, along with their teams, for their leadership and vision in honor of National Principals Month. As administrators, they put in countless hours to continue to improve District 88 and build futures for students. The Illinois Principals Association declared the month of October as National Principals Month. The week of Oct. 16 - 22 was proclaimed National Principals Week and Oct. 21 as Principals Day in Illinois by Governor Bruce Rauner. The villages of Addison, Lombard and Villa Park also recognized Bolden and Krause by providing resolutions and posting messages on their marquees/local cable stations.

New date and location for 5K Turkey Trot on Nov. 19

Celebrate Thanksgiving early this year by running the Addison Park District’s 5K Turkey Trot on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, which is Nov. 19 The timed 5K race will start at 8 a.m., with the kids 1-mile race getting under way at 8:45. The new route will go through Centennial Park and on neighborhood streets. Hoodies will be given to the first 150 people who register. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals will be awarded to the top male and female finishers of each age bracket for both the Turkey Trot and Kids’ race. Pre-registration is encouraged and available online at active.com for $25 per participant. Race packets can be picked up from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the Centennial/Club Fitness. Addison Nov. 3 • Monet Daniels, 18, of Addison, was arrested near Lake and Bloomingdale at around 3:03 p.m. Police said Daniels had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for theft. • Julia C. Prena, 21, of Addison, was arrested in the 1400 block of W. Lake St. at around 12:14 p.m. and charged with criminal damage to property. Police said Prena set fire to a bottle, causing a garbage can belonging to a business to catch fire.

Nov. 1 • Elizabeth A. Carey, 42, of Wood Dale, was arrested near Addison and Wrightwood at around 9:27 a.m. following a traffic stop. Police said Carey had a failure to appear warrant out of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department for disorderly conduct. The suspect was able to gain entry to the vehicle and the trunk. A purse was stolen from the trunk and later found in the parking lot. Seeds: Wilmington is the No. 4 seed on the top half of the Class 3A bracket; IC Catholic Prep is the No. 1 seed. Last week: Wilmington 38, Byron 18; IC Catholic Prep 65, PaxtonBuckley-Loda 0 Outlook: The top part of the Class 3A bracket has played out to seeds with only one exception (No. 6 Monticello is in the quarterfinals). Wilmington, located near Joliet, comes to Elmhurst without a loss on its record. The Wildcats, the No. 4 seed, won the Interstate Eight Conference Small Division. Wilmington had only two wins during the regular season against teams with winning records (one was 7-3, the other 5-4 that didn’t make the playoffs) and two wins against teams that made the playoffs and finished 5-5. Of note is Wilmington’s first game of the year against St. Joe-Ogden. Wilmington won that contest at home 48-12. IC Catholic Prep ended St. Joe-Ogden’s season last week in the playoffs with a 49-8 win in Elmhurst. The Knights continue to pile up points. They have scored 582 this season while giving up only 75 (7 shutouts and 9 games of 10 or fewer points allowed). Running back Jordan Rowell has rushed for 1,515 yards and 28 touchdowns this season. Quarterback Luke Ricobene has thrown for 2,022 yards and 24 touchdowns (only 5 interceptions). IC Catholic Prep’s defense has created 33 turnovers (22 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries). The Knights have committed only six turnovers on offense this season. Up next: The winner heads to the semifinals to face either No. 2 Farmington (11-0) or No. 6 Monticello (11-0) in a game that will feature a pair of 12-0 teams. If IC Catholic Prep wins against Wilmington, it will hit the road regardless of semifinal opponent because both Farmington and Monticello have hosted twice and IC Catholic Prep will have hosted three playoff games. Farmington is a town west of Peoria, southeast of Galesburg and northeast of Macomb and is about 180 miles from Elmhurst. Monticello is 160 miles from Elmhurst and is located east of Springfield.

Fenton boys cross-country team fights its way back to state Bison enjoy strong postseason run

Fenton boys cross-country senior runner Anye Whyte said the Bison had something to prove this season. “We were disappointed that we missed state by two points,” he said. “Our big goal was to make it to state.” And that’s exactly what the Bison did and along the way they won a sectional title. “A big plus was winning that sectional title,” said Whyte, who was part of a Bison’s squad that competed in the Class 2A state finals meet this past weekend in Peoria. More importantly, Whyte said the postseason success the team enjoyed was made possible through hard work and having its sights set on improved pack running. “Our goal was to improve our pack split and make sure we move up together,” he said. “If we did that then we could be successful. It led to the sectional title. At the sectional, our pack split (from the first through fifth scoring runners) was sub 20 seconds. Throughout the whole season we’ve been moving up together as a pack. Improving on the pack is

what helped us win.” Fenton improved throughout the season minus top runner Jose Vazquez-Perez, who missed a majority of the season with a stress fracture suffered this past spring during the track season. Vazquez-Perez returned at the conference meet and then logged matching eighth-place finishes at the regional and sectional meets. Despite being injured VazquezPerez was a constant on the Fenton sidelines, helping and cheering on his teammates throughout the season. “Overall, our younger guys stepped up and that helped make up for some of the good guys we lost from last year’s team,” he said. “We work together as a team during workouts and races and we feed off each other during races. We help each other out when we need it.” Vazquez-Perez said it was evident early on that Fenton would field a strong team. “I saw that the team was going to make progress after our first meet where we did way better than the year before,” he said. “And then after we ran at Elmwood Park, that’s when I really saw we had the potential to win sectionals.” Vazquez-Perez admitted it was anything but fun sitting on the side-

lines for much of the season. “It was tough,” he said. “I wanted to be out there, but I had to be smart with when I was going to come back. Now it feels great to qualify for state as a team my senior year.” Whyte said while Vazquez-Perez was not running during meets, his presence still was felt in a major way. “Jose was with us the whole way,” he said. “He supported us and we pushed ourselves even harder.” Whyte loves the team-first mentality that has been a constant throughout the fall. “We are very close and supportive of each other,” he said. “We all work very hard and push each other to work even harder. In order for us to be successful we had to do it as a team. Everybody on the team contributed to our success. We appreciate everybody and everything they do.” Whyte added there is an extreme sense of accomplishment in getting to run in Peoria in November. “This is a huge accomplishment,” he said. “It’s always one of our big goals. To accomplish a big goal like this is very rewarding. We’re very proud of it. We have a very good varsity team that is very close and has a lot of depth.”

Points have not been hard to come by this season for the IC Catholic Prep football team. For the Knights’ opponents, not so much. IC Catholic Prep vanquished another opponent this past Saturday via a 65-0 blowout win over Paxton-Buckley-Loda in a Class 3A second-round state playoff game at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst. The win puts the top-seeded Knights at 11-0 overall and sends them to the Class 3A quarterfinals likely to be held on Saturday at Plunkett Athletic Complex against Wilmington. In the win against Paxton-Buckley-Loda, the Knights led 23-0 after the first quarter and 44-0 at halftime. Quarterback Luke Ricobene went 17-for-20 for 290 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 17.1 yards per completion and had

a quarterback rating of 164.6. IC Catholic Prep also gained 222 yards on the ground on just 16 carries (13.9 yards per carry). Jordan Rowell ran only seven times, but for 119 yards and four touchdowns. He had an 82-yard run. Junior Daniel Gibbons ran two times for 55 yards and a touchdown, while Ricobene ran two times for 24 yards and sophomore Jacob Lytton ran three times for 23 yards. Matt Sutton caught four balls for 82 yards (53-yard long), while Brendan Russ had four catches for 67 yards. Rowell caught three passes for 49 yards. Khali Sanders caught three passes for 33 yards. Luke Calles caught two passes for 39 yards and Khalil Sanders caught two passes for 20 yards. On defense, Chris Johnson had 10 tackles, while sophomore Kemon Reese had nine tackles. Khali Sanders had eight tackles. Matt Jordan, Lazerick Eatman, Jim Kenneally and Michael Johnson each had a tackle for loss. Jordan had a

quarterback sack for nine yards. Sean Hipskind returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown. Sutton also had an interception. Eatman and Rowell each had a pass

deflection. Sam Buffo kicked off eight times for 507 yards and had three touchbacks. Khali Sanders, Gibbons, Sutton and Khalil Sanders each had a

touchdown to go with Hipskind’s interception return for a score and Rowell’s four rushing touchdowns. Russ and Rowell each scored a twopoint conversion.

Warriors to host East St. Louis in next round

Bensenville Fenton senior Jose Vazquez-Perez runs the second mile of the three mile race at the Illinois High School Association Class 2A Finals, which were held at Detwiller Park in Peoria, Illinois. Vazquez-Perez finished 88th overall by running the three-mile race in 16 minutes, 1 second. He was the top runner for the Fenton team that finished 21st among IHSA Class 2A teams in the state of Illinois.

Girls on the Run thriving at Army Trail Army Trail School’s Girls on the Run club continues to thrive with girls participating in a local chapter of a larger organization that focuses on activating girls’ potential and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. The group, coordinated by staff members Allison Clarke, Karina Nutini, Dennisse Serrano and Ralene Hall, meets twice weekly, teaching life skills through interactive lessons and running games. At the end of the 10-week program, the girls will participate in a 5K run. This fall, mild temperatures have given participants the opportunity to do a lot of running outdoors!

The Fenton boys cross-country team placed 21st at the recent Class 2A state meet held at Detweiller Park in Peoria. Fenton finished with 469 points. Senior Jose Vazquez-Perez took 88th overall with a time of 16:01 (5:20.2 mile split) to lead the Bison. Junior Cristian Sanchez took 96th with a time of 16:06 (5:22 mile), while junior Jeremy Lodewyck was 120th with a time of 16:19 (5:26.3 mile). Senior Anye Whyte was 145th in 16:37 (5:32.2 mile) and junior Michael Lieggi rounded out the scoring with a 178th-place finish in 17:04 (5:41.1 mile). On November 3, 2016, the Addison School District 4 Board of Education and the Addison Teachers’ Association (ATA) exchanged last and final offers as part of the ongoing efforts to successfully negotiate a contract for District 4 teachers. The Board is not encouraged. Without disclosing all of the details of the Board offer, the Board’s salary offer includes a pay increase of 4% for all ATA members in the first year of the contract, a pay increase of 3.5% for all ATA members in the second year of the contract, and a pay increase of 3.5% for all ATA members in the third year of the contract. These offered pay increases far exceed the current and anticipated rate of inflation. On Nov. 12, Addison Trail will host its third annual Kermes Latino food festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school. Historical Society to host program by County historian

The Addison Historical Society has announced that on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m., it will host Jonathan Sebastian, museum supervisor at Fischer Farm in Bensenville, who will offer a free presentation called DuPage County History from Z to A. It will be held at the Addison VFW Post. A noted DuPage County historian, Sebastian takes a new approach to history by going backward. He starts from the present and reveals interesting facts per decade, often as far back as the Civil War. Guests may recognize what he is saying, having lived through those moments in history over the years – the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and on. The Historical Society invites all to stay for a free annual Harvest Pot-Luck dinner immediately after the presentation. Stay an extra hour and learn canasta from expert Tracy Ibeling.
