Addison Trail students recognized during ACCI Student Honors Banquet

Orchestra Director to retire as school celebrates 50th anniversary

ADDISON — On April 28 beginning at 7:30 p.m., the Addison Trail orchestras performed a concert with a new piece of music in honor of Addison Trail Orchestra Director and Music Department Chair Dan O’Connell, who is retiring after more than 33 years teaching in Addison. The concert and premiere song will also serve to recognize Addison Trail’s 50th anniversary, which will take place during the 201617 school year. The piece, entitled “Legacy,” is an orchestral fantasy based on the melody from the school’s new alma mater, “Hail to Thee,” which debuted earlier this year. “Legacy” was composed by Robert Longfield and was commissioned by Addison Trail High School, the school’s Music Department and the Addison Trail Music Booster Club. A reception was held immediately after the concert in the Commons area.

Pictured are the Addison Trail students who were honored by the Addison Chamber of Commerce & Industry during the chamber’s annual Student Honors Banquet on April 26. Full story and more photos on page 13.

Obsession with smartphones getting out of hand

O

ver the course of my lifetime (I’m in my 50s; just turned another year older on Tuesday) I’ve seen the standard telephone morph into today’s smartphone—which, if you ask me, should replace one of the Seven Wonders of the World, given the awe and reverence (and attachment) most people have for their particular device. I started out on a rotary dial phone as a tot in the 1960s, then moved to a touch-tone phone, adding a message machine during the 1980s, a cell phone in the early 2000s, and finally plunging into the world of smartphones (with some apprehension) just before July 4, 2014. As our nation approaches its 240th birthday this summer, it makes me wonder what the Founding Fathers would have done after signing the Declaration of Independence if smartphones were all the rage in 1776. Let me guess: Ben Franklin takes out his iPhone 6S with its force-sensitive touchscreen, 3D Touch and secondgeneration fingerprint recognition, gathers John Adams, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, et.al., around him … and snaps a half-dozen selfies. Call it revisionist history. Once I purchased my smartphone, I told more than one friend that I would never take a selfie. Proudly, that vow has never been broken. Xena the Warrior Princess – research, procrastination and happy endings

T

he combination of a blank page and a column deadline should be motivating. Should be. However, I’ve heard this duo can provoke a person to employ any number of creative timewasters, hardly any of which include putting actual words on paper. But I wouldn’t know firsthand. I’m only imagining, because that’s what writer’s do best. Well, that and write, I suppose, but I’m getting sidetracked and wouldn’t want to do that. It would be a waste of time. Here’s the rub: writing isn’t just writing. It involves research and procrastination and often some overlap between where one ends and the other begins. When faced with a deadline, a writer might find herself scrolling on social media, clicking on link after link sifting through a considerable amount of whatevers and whatnots engaging in activity loosely referred to as “research.” The serious investigative inquiry required by a serious columnist (much like myself) is critical to the writing process and, like a deadline, is nearly impossible to avoid. In my professional experience, I’ve found a certain amount of research – otherwise known as uncontrolled scroll-

Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE

ing – is inevitable, albeit not always required. The result of this research most often falls into one of three categories: significant, insignificant and beyond insignificant. One is useful; the other two may be, depending on the writer’s talent, creativity, proximity to deadline and overall desperation. Furthermore, separating the wheat from the chafe requires diligence, concentration, perseverance and the ability to click on link after link while waiting patiently for the slowest of pages to load. Today I conducted considerable research, all in the name of getting it right for you, dear reader. Your appreciation is noted and appreciated. Back at you. In order to serve you better, I muddled through the significant, insignificant and beyond, but I’m not one to judge. I’ll leave that up to you. Said research included: An enticing invitation to

“Click here to see jaw-dropping historic photos of amazing people!” (Most I didn’t recognize.) There was Goldie Hawn eating a hamburger and Clint Eastwood skateboarding – both in 1964 but not together. The takeaway? Maybe 1964 was a pretty big year – significant even. Or maybe not. Cleaning hacks, home improvement hacks, gardening hacks, life hacks, cooking hacks, fishing hacks, decorating hacks and laundry hacks. The Internet is full of hacks, and one can basically conclude that anything containing a hack is anything but. In a word: I love hacks. The same can be said of animal rescue stories. I watched a few (okay maybe half a dozen) but one about a pup named Xena the Warrior Princess and a boy with autism tugged at the heartstrings. I hate animal cruelty, but enjoy happy endings. Xena the Warrior Princess has a very happy ending. Research can take you in a number of directions. An hour before deadline, person might find herself inexplicably Googling descriptions of movies she’s never watched in order to see if she might want to sometime – even though she hardly ever watches mov-

ies and tends to fall asleep on the couch when she does. Still, research is research; I remind myself it’s all for a good cause and sometimes you have to take one for the team. I’m not a total chump and do harbor a sliver of discernment. I didn’t click on every link I encountered. That wouldn’t be prudent or professional (or discerning). I avoided an article outlining the history of the cell phone because I’ve lived out that journey in person. Perhaps I’ll write about it someday. Also took a pass on an image of what Xena the Warrior Princess looks like now. There was no need. I am not and wasn’t ever aware of what Xena the Warrior Princess (in the human form) looked like then, so I wouldn’t even know the difference. Not that I’d need to. I’ve already seen the puppy story and in my world Xena will forever walk on four legs. Like I said, I love happy endings. Elmhurst College to hold Campus Bird Walk
Bird watchers welcome to join informative walk around Arboretum campus

ELMHURST — The Elmhurst College Sustainability Committee will host a bird walk on campus on Tuesday morning, May 10 beginning at 7:30 a.m. in front of Illinois Hall, Schaible Science Center on the campus of Elmhurst College. “Bird-friendly” coffee will be served from 7-7:30 a.m. The walk will be led by student birder Glenn Perricone. Elmhurst College is a registered arboretum and provides great stopover habitat for migrant birds such as warblers and thrushes. The walk will last no longer than an hour, and will be open to new bird watchers. Bring your own binoculars, if you have them; a limited number of loaner binoculars will be available. Admission is free.

Make your place your own and don’t worry about convention

T

hat should be standard advice, but for many people make decisions on their home based on resale or what is “proper.” The only proper thing to do is to make your house your home. Knock out walls. Paint your living room purple. Wallpaper the ceilings so they look stars and the moon. I once knew a gal who rearranged her house making the living room her bedroom. Or maybe it was the dining room. I don’t recall, but our colleagues thought she was nutsy. I thought she was creative and it was her house. She can do whatever she wants. Your castle, you make the

rules. And the rooms. When it does come time to sell, you can shift most things back. You can slap on neutral paint or let the new owner do it. Realtors used to tell everyone to go with neutral color on walls and carpets, and now vanilla homes lack appeal. My hubby and have shifted room conventions the entire

time we have lived here. The upper front bedroom was originally my office. Now it is a guest room. The lower level has been Boy Gaming Headquarters, all-purpose party room, my office, my prince’s art studio. The bedroom down there has been a bedroom, a living room, a guest room, and now a bed/computer room. The extra room has been a bedroom, computer room, stained glass studio. We make a room suit the highest need at the time. Last weekend, we asked my son to help move some furniture. Unfazed, he asked, “What crazy idea does Mom have now?”

Our sunroom is our favorite room. It was our TV room and then a traditional sunroom with a funky table and chair set (very Picasso-ish), amazing plants, love seat. It is a reading room, a room with a view of the river and the woods and the critters. Very peaceful and tons of great natural light. The lower level is fully exposed with plenty of windows and light too, but there is something about our sunroom; we love it. So I suggested my hubby move his art studio up to this pretty spot. Hence the need for my son’s muscles to help move couch and love seat to the lower

level (I’m the supervisor and very good at holding doors open). The sunroom loveseat and Pierre and Mimi (the name we gave our table; there are 4 chairs and we named two of them) moved into the living room. The result is a sunny bright art studio space on the main level, which is like being in a tree house because of the lay of our property. The living room seems really big now without the red couch and loveseat. We use the sunroom loveseat as our movie viewing spot. We can still watch the fire dance too. It’s all very sweet. Is it standard living room setup? Nope. Do we care?

Mother’s Day

Whether you’re missing one or all of your teeth, there’s now an exciting option that will help you smile with confidence again. Thousands of people are flashing smiles that have been beautified by implants, a fabulous tooth replacement technique that can be performed right here in our office.

Dental implants are the closest cousin to natural teeth. They are permanent false teeth anchored right into your jawbone, just like your natural teeth. They’re more stable than dentures, and eating is done with ease and comfort. Many patients find implants give them a more positive self-image and more confidence. Implants can be used to stabilize dentures and bridges, replace just one tooth or to rebuild an entire jaw of missing teeth. The best part is that they look and feel just like natural teeth. Dental implants are reliable. Patients have retained them for more than twenty years with a better than 90% success rate.

From Our Family To Yours

Dental implant treatments does require a greater investment of time and money, but in the long run, it’s well worth it.

Hendricks each had one goal. In the win against ACC, Hurt had three goals, while Hendricks had one goal. Fuller and Liz Maloney each had a goal in the win against Timothy. “We played a solid team defensive game,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Tom Schergen, talking about the Timothy victory. “We stayed strong on defense and took the opportunity to attack when it presented itself.” Schergen credits the team’s recent surge partially to having an almost full-strength roster. “The weekend before we had 14 of 22 players available due to injury and prom,” he said. “Against Timothy we were close to being completely healthy. I thought the Timothy game was a complete team effort from the defense to the midfield to the forwards. Everybody played a part.” IC Catholic Prep also has enjoyed strong play from freshman goalie Gabby Smola. “She’s solidified things in the back for us,” said Schergen. “She’s been on a roll. We’re playing the hot hand.” Schergen added the team also has improved things on the chemistry end with players from all four grade levels coming together. “We’re at a point now where they are used to each other,” he said. “That blending process where you have the seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen

coming together is coming to fruition.” Hurt had seven goals in a recent four-game stretch and as of last week was leading the team in goals with 14. “Olivia has come into her own,” said Schergen. “She’s always been a threat, but now she’s figuring out when to make the most impact and is taking advantage of scoring opportunities.” The coach also lauded the work of central defenders Kaitlyn Grady and Tess Reardon. “Those two have been healthy all year,” said Schergen. “They have been our rock. They have been a solid force all year in the back. They’ve played every game back there and have more than held their own.” IC Catholic Prep played St. Edward and Guerin Prep earlier the week at home. Saturday is the annual IC Catholic Prep-Timothy Christian Crosstown Cup events. The girls soccer teams will play at 10 a.m. at Lewis Stadium (at Plunkett Park). The two baseball teams follow at noon. The IC Catholic Prep and Timothy softball teams will play a doubleheader at 10 a.m. at Plunkett, while sophomore baseball starts at 10 a.m. as well. “Three home games in a row is well-needed after a lot of traveling the last few weeks,” said Schergen.

here’s this jamoke with a stupid grin on his face standing next to the suspect who, mind you, is still wearing what was believed to be a suicide explosive belt. Let’s proceed to Exhibit B of selfie self-absorption, which I find far more infuriating than the smilin’ Brit striking a pose with a suspected hijacker. In February, it was widely reported that a group of beachgoers in Argentina grabbed a baby Franciscan dolphin, con-

sidered to be close to extinction, out of the water. Then, several of the beachgoers passed the dolphin around— to take selfies with it. Their seemingly unquenchable thirst for selfies apparently satisfied for the moment, the baby dolphin was set down in the sand. It died. What I’d prefer to call these egocentric fools can’t be printed in a family newspaper. I could go on about other instances out on the highways

and byways of Chicagoland to further illustrate society’s preoccupation with smartphones. For instance, the time I approached a four-way stop on West Street in Elmhurst, north of North Avenue. There was only north- and southbound traffic; vehicles at the four-way stop were neither in the eastbound nor westbound lanes. Well before I stopped, I noticed the first vehicle in the southbound lane remained stopped, with four vehicles behind it.

At least 30 seconds had passed. “Why aren’t they going?” I mumbled under my breath. As I proceeded northbound—that lead vehicle remained stopped, mind you—I took a quick glance inside the vehicle and noticed the driver looking down at their smartphone. Just as I was about to lose hope that more of suburbia’s population was becoming victims of the smartphone zombie apocalypse, I ran into a

fellow the other night at a local establishment whom I’ve known for quite a while. Following a few minutes of chit-chat, he reached into his back pocket. In his hand was a retro model flip phone. He mentioned that he had been using a smartphone, but traded it in for the flip phone. I know of several beachgoers in Argentina who should be forced to turn in their smartphones and use dumb phones from now on.

Kominowski, Rias starring for Addison Trail boys gymnastics team Blazers’ boys volleyball team competing amidst tough schedule By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Addison Trail boys gymnastics team has enjoyed a number of recent individual successes throughout the season. Alex Kominowski won the floor exercise event at the Glenbard West invitational and at the Lake Park invitational. Kominowski and teammate Marcus Rias have played in the top 5 on floor at many of the invitationals the team has competed in. As a whole, Addison Trail coach Mike Galfi has seen plenty of progress from his group this spring. “We have really improved our form and technique on many events,” he said. “At this point, we have focused on cleaning up our routines and perfecting the skills for the big meets.” Galfi pegs parallel bars as the team’s best event right now. “The routines have all the requirements and are very clean,” he said. In addition to Kominowski and Rias, Jeremy Crespo and Uhriel Liberato-Borjaalso have made key strides. “Those two have really improved over the course of the year,” said Galfi. “They each have learned multiple tricks on each event and continue to work hard every day.” Galfi said two major points of emphasis this season have been the concept of team and dedication. “We continue to work hard as a unit and are excited about the prospects coming up through the program,” he said.

Addison Trail boys volleyball Through late last week, the Addison Trail boys volleyball team was 2-2 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play after a 25-22, 26-24 loss to Downers Grove South. “Downers Grove South is going to be the conference champion,” said Addison Trail coach Chad Grant. “We still are having a tough time in the win-loss column, but we are a very competitive team. Our schedule has been very tough of late and it doesn’t get any easier.” Grant has noticed a recent uptick in servereceive and overall offensive play. “Our serve-receive has been stronger and our offense is inconsistent, but still improving,” he said. The Blazers also are hard at work on the defensive part of their game. “We still have to be a much better defensive team,” said Grant. “The effort is there. We need to be better with positioning.” Grant cited Jacob Grygo for recent strong play. “Jacob is doing a great job setting up the offense and also leading the team in kills,” the coach said. “He is developing into an outstanding all-around player.” Sophomore Bryan Florian also is making progress. “Bryan is a sophomore who played on the freshman B team last year. He is making great strides and is constantly putting himself in the right spot to make plays in the back row.” Addison Trail competed in the tough Lincoln-Way East tournament this past weekend. “That is one of the best tournaments in the state,” said Grant. “The goal for us is to be better in pressure situations late in games so we can turn these close losses into victories.”

Spizzirri throws onehitter for Fenton softball Pikul leading Bison in hitting

Notable pitching performances have been a frequent occurrence of late for the Fenton softball team. Taylor Spizzirri recently threw a one-hit shutout in a 14-0 win over Elmwood Park. She followed that up with a four-hitter against Proviso West (19-2 win). Jocelyn Souvannasy then threw a shutout and struck out eight in a 20-0 Game 2 win against Proviso West. In other recent action, Fenton dropped a 9-0 game to Wheaton Academy and lost 16-3 to Glenbard South and 13-2 to Chicago Christian. At the plate, Diana Pikul was leading the team in hitting earlier last week with a .444 batting average. Jenna Geraci was tops in hits with 17. Geraci, Pikul and Courtney Susmarksi each had five doubles, while Geraci and Alex Stoklosa each had two triples. Pikul and Rose Riley each had two homers, while Geraci had a team-high 16 RBI. Ellie Wassmann was leading the team with 20 runs scored and 23 stolen bases.

Susmarski was the teamleader in fielding with a .982 percentage. Spizzirri had 22 strikeouts on the mound. “Right now we are putting a lot of our focus on just getting better each day and playing the game with the correct amount of hustle and enthusiasm,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello. “It is a work in progress, but we are moving in the right direction.” Fenton has been receiving contributions of late from freshmen Isa Lozada and Payton Pugliese. “They have really taken big steps forward lately,” said Mello. “Both have been very solid in the field and are showing improvements at the plate.” Fenton had games scheduled this week against Bartlett, St. Edward, IC Catholic Prep and Amundsen. The Amundsen contest on May 6 is a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. at Redmond Park in Bensenville and is Fenton’s senior night. “The season hasn’t gone like we had hoped in terms of wins and losses, but there still is plenty of time for us to put ourselves in a position to have success in the post-season,” said Mello. Fenton hosts a regional on May 24.

ning of the season our outside hitters were our strongest hitters, but both our middles and right sides are getting better where lately all three hitters have been contributing in getting kills and putting the ball away.” Petersen also lauded the defensive exploits of Michael Wiszowaty, Gutierrez, Sanchez and Guerra. “They have passed extremely well this season and their blocking has been effective,” said Petersen. “They always have each others’ backs when needed on a shank or a tip. We are covering our blockers and getting any ball that gets past

the block.” Hill and Bajo have been strong in running the offense for the Bison. “Andrew and Freddie are our best setters,” said Petersen. “They never let the team down and are very positive and supportive players.” Petersen sees a bright future for the team. “Each game is a new challenge, but each game we see another aspect of the game click,” she said. “The boys work really hard and still are very young. The setters are sophomores and all four other starters are juniors. We are very excited to see where this season takes us.”

Fenton boys volleyball team defeats Proviso West By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Fenton boys volleyball team split a pair of recent matches. The Bison defeated Proviso West 25-13, 25-18 and dropped a three-set decision to Rich East (25-22, 20-25, 25-15). On the statistical front, Javier Sanchez is leading the team with 114 kills. Fellow outside hitter Ethan Guerra has 50 kills. Setters Freddie Bajo (54 kills) and Andrew Hill (39 kills) have combined for 93 kills. David Gutierrez had 21 kills through late last week. “Javier has an exceptional hit that comes as a surprise

to opposing teams,” Fenton coach Heather Petersen said. “He is constantly getting better each game. David’s hits also come so quick that players on the opposing team don’t see it coming.” Hill is excelling as a 10th grader on the varsity team. “Andrew has stepped up as a sophomore and lately has been putting the ball away and racking up kills for our team,” said Petersen. “He has come out of nowhere with his hitting. He is able to avoid blocks, which is why he is second in kills on the team.” Fenton also has stepped things up at the service line.

“Serving has been a thing we have really improved on since the beginning of the season,” said Petersen. “We were missing up to five serves a game. Now on our good days we miss two or less per game.” Sanchez, in particular, has been effective of late at the line. “He is getting his jumpserve down, which has been very helpful and effective,” said Petersen. Petersen added that offensive production now is coming from multiple sources across the front row. “Lately, our offense in the front row has been very good with putting the ball away,” she said. “At the begin-

Army Trail PTA hosts Earth Day project Plans for upcoming Garden Party include butterfly sanctuary

ADDISON — The Army Trail PTA sponsored an Earth Day Beautification project that had parents, staff, and students working after school to spruce up the school playground recently. New benches were installed to make the playground more community-friendly and mountains of mulch were spread on the playground surface to make the area more play-friendly. Army Trail families are looking forward to more outdoor work when they participate in the school’s Garden Party project planned for Saturday, May 14, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The school procured a grant through Kids Gardening that will provide funds, material and manpower to help create a garden that will help students learn about nutrition and growing food and flowers. The workday will be sponsored by PT

Holdings, a local company who partnered with Kids Gardening to create gardens last spring at York High School.

The Army Trail project plans to beautify the school’s courtyard as well as creating a garden and a butterfly sanctuary.

With silver bells and cockle shells and a whole lot of mulch! Pictured here, an Army Trail student and a PTA adult spread mulch on the playground at the school as part of a recent Earth Day Beautification Project. The efforts will continue on Saturday, May 14 at a “Garden Party.”

Retired Army Major visits Indian Trail

Sixth graders in Mrs. Weber’s language arts classes at Indian Trail Junior High had an afterschool opportunity to visit with and learn from Ned Ricks, a retired Army Major who shared slides and information about his service as a commanding officer during the Vietnam War. Mr. Ricks’ photography is featured in the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago and he’s published multiple books as well. In class, the students have been discussing the war while they are reading a novel about a military dog in Vietnam.

Pytko noted Kroll also has qualifying times in the 100 and is 0.25 off in the 100 high hurdles. Pytko also has seen progress from the team’s distance runners. “Many of our distance girls are coming around and achieving times they never thought would have been possible for themselves,” he said. “You will have to look out for Lizbeth Balbuena and Diana Grinyuk in the future. They keep surprising themselves and think they can achieve anything right now.” The program’s frosh-soph sprinters also are making strides. “Our frosh-soph sprinters also are coming along nicely now that we have changed our venue to outside,” said Pytko. “They are really starting to pick up the pace.” Pytko is looking forward to the stretch run of the outdoor season. “It’s just a matter of the coaching staff getting the girls in the right frame of mind and being sound mechanically while having near perfect exchanges,” he said. “It will be an exciting three weeks, that’s for sure.”

Willowbrook boys tennis teams wins District 88 invitational title Addison Trail’s Franco enjoying tournament success By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Willowbrook boys tennis team recently won the District 88 Classic eight-team tournament. “I believe this is the first time Willowbrook has won the entire tournament,” said Willowbrook coach Ed DeLaCruz. Willowbrook’s Mike Sommers won the No. 1 singles

title, while teammate Khateeb Raza won the No. 2 singles title. Sommers and Raza both are seniors and team captains. Through late last week, Sommers had a 13-6 record, while Raza was 11-7. Freshmen Mark Lobdell and Drake DelValle both have .500 records on the varsity. “They have shown great maturity as freshmen and have improved,” said DeLaCruz, who noted the team overall has a youthful roster composition. The Warriors were 6-6 overall and 3-2 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play through late last week. If Willowbrook defeated Morton

Willowbrook baseball team defeats Addison Trail Zunkel strikes out 10 in complete game effort By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Willowbrook baseball team shook off a tough threegame West Suburban Conference Gold Division series with Hinsdale South by recording a recent 6-1 win against District 88 neighbor Addison Trail. Willowbrook scored a pair of runs in the first inning and four more in the fourth inning. The Warriors had six hits in the game. Cameron Zunkel was the winning pitcher. He threw a complete-game four-hitter and struck out 10. He threw 63 of 105 pitches for strikes. TJ Geritano went 2-for-3 with a run scored, two RBI and a walk. Kyle Martyniuk had a double, two RBI and a walk. Jon Kelso had a double, a run scored and an RBI. Trevor Jalosynski had a hit and a run scored. Danny Olson had a run scored and an RBI, while MJ Ranieri had a stolen base. In earlier action, the Warriors dropped a 4-3 non-conference decision to Andrew in eight innings. After playing to an early 1-1 stalemate, Andrew took a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Willowbrook tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the third. The game would remain deadlocked until Andrew won it in the bottom of the eighth inning. Willowbrook had three hits in the game and made five errors. Zunkel had a hit and a run

scored. Kelso scored two runs. Kyle Ferguson had an RBI. Mark Molitor had a hit, as did Matt Pizur. Ronnie Reitz started the game and went four innings. He allowed four hits and fanned two. Will Hines pitched the final 3 1/3 innings. He allowed two hits and had one strikeout. He took the loss. Willowbrook completed its three-game series with Hinsdale South after a 4-3 loss in eight innings. The Warriors lost all three conference games to Hinsdale South, each by a single run. Two of the contests went to extra innings. The middle game, a 3-2 loss, went 10 innings. Hinsdale South took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and led 3-1 after three. Willowbrook put up two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Willowbrook had eight hits in the game. Ben Espinoza had a hit and a run scored. Geritano had an RBI. Zunkel had a double and two RBI, while Ferguson had two hits. Molitor had a hit and a run scored, while Ranieri had two hits. Matt Garbacz added a hit. Gabracz threw the first six innings. He allowed six hits and two earned runs and fanned three. Alec Michaelson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and struck out two. He took the loss. The Addison Trail win put Willowbrook at 8-12 overall and 5-5 in WSC Gold play. The Warriors are scheduled to host Downers Grove North today in a WSC crossover game. Willowbrook hosts Proviso East Friday in the opener of a threegame WSC Gold series and then plays Proviso West Saturday at home at 2 p.m.

earlier this week it will come in third place in the regularseason conference standings. In earlier action, the Warriors defeated District 88 neighbor Addison Trail 5-2. Addison Trail boys tennis The Addison Trail boys tennis team scored a recent 5-2 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win against Leyden. Individually, No. 1 singles player Alex Franco won the Wheeling invitational and took second at the District 88 Classic. Nico Favuzzi was third at No. 2 singles at the District 88 Classic. No. 3 singles player Arthur Lee was

second at Wheeling, while the No. 2 doubles team of Jean Avila and Saul Garcia placed second at Wheeling as well. Through late last week, Franco was 7-5 overall at No. 1 singles. Addison Trail coach Justin Hegner has been pleased with how his team has fared in invitationals and tournaments. “Although we haven’t done as well as we liked in dual matches due to injuries and players missing during the week, we have had good tournament play,” he said. “We tied for third at the District 88 Classic out of eight teams with two medalists and we

also had three out of five spots medal at Wheeling. Our players have really been stepping it up in the weekend tournaments.” Hegner said the team’s focus is to improve in the remaining dual matches on the schedule. “We want to try to improve our record and also continue to do well at the tournaments,” he said. “We have the Lake Park invite (this weekend) and then conference. Even though we haven’t had success against some of our conference teams during the season, I think we can beat them the second time around at the conference tournament.”

Willowbrook boys gymnastics team finishes conference regular season undefeated Sousa hits 54s in all-around; Freshman team wins invitational title By Mike Miazga Correspondent

Get out the brooms—three of them to be exact. The Willowbrook boys gymnastics program completed a three-level undefeated conference regular season in a recent meet against Hinsdale South. The Warriors scored a 136.00-108.80 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win at the varsity level. The junior-varsity team scored a 113.40-110.80 win and the freshman won 71.50 to 61.70, meaning all three levels defeated all WSC Gold foes this season. “Going undefeated in conference, the coaches couldn’t be more happy with the guys and the pride they bring to this program,” said Willowbrook coach Caleb Strejc. At the varsity level, standout Adam Sousa hit the 54 level in the all-around competition for the first time in his high-school career at the Wheaton invitational. He also went into the 54s again in the conference meet against Hinsdale South. Strejc noted the team is working on cleaning up routines and becoming more comfortable with them. “Less choppy and less breaks—that’s how we will get little tenths back here and there to boost our score,” he said.

Floor and vault, the coach noted, are the team’s strongest events. “We have the potential to always have three guys score above 8s, which is good,” said Strejc. Willowbrook also has the ability to score well on parallel bars. “We have Adam going close to the 9s and Miguel Portilla and Bailey Heppner really putting good routines together,” said Strejc. “They will be able to score in the 7s if they hit and stay clean.” Strejc has seen improvement up and down the lineup. “There are so many guys showing improvement in many areas in these last two weeks of the season,” he said. “Those impressing us the most with their progression are the freshmen.” Six freshmen competitors have received the call to the junior-varsity squad for late-season competition. That group includes Matt Foley, Joel Saldana, Isaiah Lewis, Sean Luner, Saad Omar and Collin Donaldson. The freshman team won the recent Tom Kordewick invitational, which Strejc noted is akin to a conference meet for the ninth-grade gymnasts. Foley won the all-around to lead the Warriors. The team also received contributions from Omar (third-place all-around) and Saldana (fourthplace all-around). “It’s been a great season with our success in conference,” said Strejc. “We’re looking to prepare for sectionals and just go out there and have our guys give their best meet of the season.”

DON FIGARELLI

I guess I am too old school to get excited about the NFL Draft. I could not name you one player that the Bears have drafted. Maybe it’s a lack of knowledge on my part, but why should I get excited about a player I don’t know? Now, when the Bears drafted Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers, I could not wait to see them play. Or how about Walter Payton and Jim McMahon? On the baseball front, how about the Cubs? Best start in 100 years and the White Sox are also off to a great start.

Please let’s not start thinking about a crosstown World Series. Just play one game at a time. Here are some trivia questions to win a shirt What college did Jim McMahon attend? What college did Walter Payton attend? What college did Dick Butkus attend?

Call Don at 630-530-7061 if you know the answer and win a prize.

“By finding a sunscreen you like that suits your activities, you’ll be more apt to apply it often.” Kirkpatrick notes that with so many choices, finding sunscreen that works best for your lifestyle and properly applying it can be confusing. Luckily, some brands are helping simplify selection. For example, BullFrog now segments sunscreens according to the activity and environment in which they will be used. Read labels for application instructions and to determine whether a given product is right for you, and consider

these quick tips for maximum skin protection: • Broad-spectrum sunscreens contain both UVA and UVB protection. Select one with an SPF of at least 30 and apply evenly 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors. One ounce is the right quantity to cover the whole body. Don’t forget ears, back of neck, hands, tops of feet and top of the head, if exposed. Reapply every two hours and after swimming, sweating and towel drying. • Going swimming? Use sunscreen engineered for water resistance. The hydrophobic polymers contained in BullFrog Water Sport make it a good option for intense water sports. Or toss some Ocean Potion into your beach bag -- the brand’s new H20 Sport SPF 50 spray has an oil-free, instant dry formula and is PABA- and paraben-free. Whatever sunscreen you opt for, don’t forget to reapply after exiting the water. • If you’re playing a sport where you need to keep hands grease-free, use an alcohol-based gel that dries quickly. Gel is water- and sweat-resistant and allows for clear application and quick dry-down so you can get back to the action fast. If you sweat a lot while working out or simply going about your day, avoid sunscreen running into your eyes with a solid stick formula. • In the woods? Pack lightly by beating burn and bite with a sunscreen that’s also an insect repellent. For example, BullFrog’s Mosquito Coast has a DEETfree formula so you don’t have to wash off when returning from outdoors. • Don’t let cost prevent you from taking care of yourself and your family’s skin. Affordable sunscreens are available. For instance, NO-AD, the first mass brand sunscreen to be parabenfree, retinyl palmitate-free and PABAfree, has a lower cost per ounce than national brands and also carries formulas specific for babies and oil-free options for the face. “Whether you’re a long distance runner or a beach bum, sun protection should be part of your routine,” says Kirkpatrick.

(StatePoint) Protecting skin from the sun is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Unfortunately, many people fail to take sufficient measures year-round, but especially in summer when skin exposure tends to be at its peak. Men can be particularly neglectful. Indeed, fewer than 15 percent of men use sunscreen regularly when outside for more than an hour, according to the Center for Disease Control. “This summer, make sun care a habit,” urges Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick of the Brevard Skin and Cancer Center.
