AT’s Little Blazer Preschool registration now open ADDISON — Addison Trail’s Little Blazer Preschool program is now accepting students ages 3 to 5. The program is presented by the Preschool Child Classes at Addison Trail, and its purpose is to aid in the preparation for and transition into

kindergarten by fostering self-esteem and self-expression through organized educational activities selected to meet the physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs of preschool children. The preschool program is offered from 8:20 to 10 a.m.

on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 29 to Dec. 10. Cost for the semester is $85 (payable to Addison Trail High School). That fee includes snacks, arts-and-crafts materials and teaching resources. The daily schedule consists of learning centers based on

the preschool teaching objectives, story time, large and small muscle activities, circle time, music, art, snack and free play. Activities relate to a weekly theme. Each class is planned and prepared by Addison Trail students and is discussed with the instructor

She was born on October 15, 1935 in Minitonas Manitoba, Canada. She is survived by her children Eugene (Karen), Judy, Tim (Angel); and her grandchildren, Kristopher, Marion, Jeremy. Marion was a great mother and friend too many. She will be truly missed. SPRINGFIELD — With entirely Democratic support, the state Senate on Wednesday, September 9, passed a bill to fund human service providers, to let road money flow through to local governments and to allow Illinois Lottery winners to be paid. Sen. Heather Steans, D-Chicago, said the appropriations measure would authorize spending of $1.8 billion from general revenue funds for human services. Additionally, it would allow $2 billion from other state funding sources, including motor fuel taxes. Republicans opposed the measure, saying Democrats were just accelerating Illinois budget crisis by knowingly spending more money than the state will collect. “So, the budget you passed in May was $4 billion out of balance, (and) we’re here four months later and now you want to put it $6 billion out of balance?” asked Sen. Matt Murphy, R-Palatine. Sen. Daniel Biss, D-Evanston, said while he didn’t vote for the budget offered by Democrats in May and later vetoed by Gov. Bruce Rauner, the Legislature must proceed assembling a budget with appropriations first if need be. To do nothing until the warring parties in Springfield break their impasse, he and other Democrats argued, would be to allow the devastation of Illinois human services infrastructure and the harming of the state’s most vulnerable citizens. “Let’s cut the self-righteousness, let’s all look inside of

On Sunday, Sept. 13 just before the 3rd annual “Talkie Trot” to support the Center for Speech and Language Disorders (CSLD), Pete DiCianni, County Board member (Dist. 2) and former Mayor of Elmhurst, announced his intentions to seek the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Illinois’ 8th District

as a Republican. The seat was vacated when Tammy Duckworth decided to run for U.S. Senate and give up her Congressional seat. Surrounded by elected officials, the music blasted the theme from the movie Rocky (Gonna Fly Now) as DiCianni took the stage to make his announcement. Car Seat Safety event this Saturday, Sept. 19 ADDISON — Every day in America, too many children are riding in the wrong car seats or are completely unrestrained. To help combat the issue, the Addison Police Department announced last week that it would conduct a car seat safety event on National Seat Check Saturday, September 19 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Addison Wal-Mart, 1050 N. Rohlwing Road. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand to check car seats for

proper installation and educate parents and caregivers on how to choose the correct car seats and install them properly in their vehicles. The event is part of the Addison Police Department’s participation in National Child Passenger Safety Week (September 13-19, 2015), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This event is one of 80 events in Illinois sponsored by AAA, Illinois Secretary of

State and the Illinois Department of Transportation. “Every 34 seconds a child under the age of 13 is involved in a crash,” said Sergeant Roger Saran. Using car seats that are age and size appropriate is the best way to keep your child safe. By attending Addison Police Department’s car seat event on September 19, parents and caregivers can be sure their kids are riding as safely as possible in their vehicle.” Furthermore, he added, even if kids are in the right seat,

sometimes they are not buckled in correctly. NHTSA recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible up to the top height or weight allowed by their particular seats. Once a child outgrows the rear-facing car seat, he/she is ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness. After outgrowing their car seats, children should be placed in booster seats. While Illinois law states a child must be in an appropriate car seat or booster seat until their eighth birthday,

some eight year old children are not tall enough for the seat belt to fit them correctly. These kids need to stay in a booster seat until they are taller—4’9” is the recommended height. Remember: In Illinois, children are required to be in a car seat or booster seat until at least age 8 and all children younger than 13 should ride in the back seat. Willis-backed measure protecting sexual assault survivors becomes law SPRINGFIELD — A new law in Illinois backed by state Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Addison, will ensure compliance with the federal Violence Against Women Act of 2013 and remove a barrier that may prevent sexual assault survivors from going to the hospital after the crime. “The last thing on someone’s mind in the wake of a sexual assault should be concern over medical bills,” said Willis. “This law will make sure that victims of sexual assault will be able to report the

crime and allow medical technicians to collect all the evidence possible without fear of taking on the financial burden of costly medical expenses.” Following a sexual assault, survivors are urged to go to hospital emergency rooms for a medical forensic examination. This is an invasive examination that can last four to six hours and involves the collection of physical evidence from the survivor’s body. The physical evidence, collected through what is commonly referred to as a “sexual assault

evidence kit” or a “rape kit,” is then sent to a crime lab for testing. The test results are a critical part of a criminal investigation and may later be used in a criminal prosecution. House Bill 3848 expressly prohibits hospitals, emergency room physicians and other providers of sexual assault services from charging the survivor or sending the survivor a bill. Hospitals must also provide a written notice to survivors when they are discharged, explaining that they may not be billed and providing information

regarding who to contact if they receive a bill. Under the new law, fines may be imposed on providers who bill or refer a survivor to a collection agency. “This law is a common-sense measure that is going to protect victims of sexual assault and result in more criminals being prosecuted for their crimes,” said Willis. “We want to remove the barriers of an oftentimes intimidating process for victims and do what we can to support them as we bring perpetrators to justice.”

Willis pledges to continue fight to restore Childcare Assistance Program Willis. “Cutting this program to the bone is will not save money and will only end up costing more as families are forced to seek government assistance.” The Childcare Assistance Program is a state resource that provides low-income, working families with access to quality, affordable child care that allows them to continue working and contributes to the healthy, emotional and social development of the child. Advocates who oppose the cuts argue that restricting access to the program to such a degree pulls a vital

resource that was being utilized for parents to better themselves and provide for their families through their employment. “Cutting this program is going to result in fewer parents working or attending school, and more families relying on welfare to survive,” said Willis. “This program is one of those instances when having it in place is not only the right thing to do from a

moral perspective, but also from an economic perspective.” Willis is serving her second term in the Illinois General Assembly as State Representative of the 77th District, which includes O’Hare Airport and portions of Addison, Bellwood, Bensenville, Franklin Park, Maywood, Melrose Park, Northlake, Stone Park, and Wood Dale.

SPRINGFIELD — After recent efforts in the Illinois House to override Governor Rauner’s drastic and devastating changes to the Childcare Assistance Program came up one vote short, state Rep. SPRINGFIELD — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, September 10, said Illinois’ lawsuit climate is nearly the worst in the country. The Illinois Trial Lawyers Association answered, saying that’s corporate propaganda. Citing a survey conducted for its Institute for Legal Reform by Harris Poll, the Chamber said only Louisiana and West Virginia fare worse than Illinois. The score represents Illinois’ worst showing in the 13-year history of the survey. Illinois was bested by regional competitors including Iowa at No. 4, Indiana at No. 18, Wisconsin at No. 20, Kentucky at No. 39

and Missouri at No. 42. According to the survey, 75 percent of senior company attorneys surveyed said a state’s lawsuit environment is likely to affect important business decisions at their companies, including where to locate or expand. The Chamber rolled out the national survey in a Chicago news conference, which Gov. Bruce Rauner joined. Gov. Rauner praised the Chamber’s efforts to shine light on the issue and said the state’s reputation for a nasty lawsuit atmosphere was hurting Illinois in job retention, job creation and employer recruitment. “You come here, you open yourself up to attack and exces-

posed legislation to improve what he considers unfairly weighted aspects of Illinois’ system, such as medical awards based on charges rather than actual payments; overly inclusive liability standards and venue shopping by plaintiffs. The subject is important because Illinois can’t fix a seemingly continual budget crisis without improving its economy, Rauner noted. “Without growth, we will not solve our financial troubles,” he said. Perry J. Browder, president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Trial Association, tore into

Rauner, the survey, the Institute for Legal Reform and Harris Poll in a statement issued in response. Browder called the institute “a front group for the nation’s wealthiest special interests” and said the governor was putting profits before people. “The only lawsuit crisis in Illinois is the one conjured up by the imaginations of phony front groups funded by big businesses trying to saddle the state’s taxpayers with the costs of caring for those who are injured or the survivors of those killed due to corporate negligence or malfeasance,”

Browder said. The Trial Lawyers president also said the respondents were essentially defense attorneys for the nation’s richest companies, and the survey excluded other relevant parties such as attorneys and judges. Browder called the survey “math washing — using numbers to give the veneer of science and precision to a biased study that found just what it wanted to find.” He argued Illinois’ civil justice system works and said the state’s courts “provide a level playing field for individuals to force wrongdoers to make

amends — even the wealthiest people and companies that, in other spheres of our government, exert vastly disproportionate influence.” Harris Poll said its survey was conducted via online and telephone interviews between March 9 and June 24, 2105. The respondents were 1,203 general counsels and senior attorneys or leaders in companies with annual revenues of at least $100 million. The sampling variation or error was listed at plus or minus 2.8 percentage points. The survey is available at instituteforlegalreform.com

Summit at around 9:08 p.m. and charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol and criminal trespass to a motor vehicle. • A 31-year-old Villa Park man was arrested in the 400 block of N. Beverly at around 5:52 p.m. and charged with two counts of domestic battery. • Theft was reported at a local entertainment center at around 9:35 p.m. A complainant told police his cell phone fell out of his pocket when he got off of a ride. When he went back to look for it, the phone was gone. Aug. 27 Oscar A. Rodriguez, 18, of Villa Park, was arrested at a local skate park at around 7:20 p.m. and charged with possession of cannabis. Aug. 26 Burglary to motor vehicles was reported in the 400 block of N. Villa at around 10:15 p.m. Police said unknown suspects cut through a fence to a local business and then proceeded to break into several landscaping trailers and trucks. The suspects stole multiple landscaping tools and chemicals. Aug. 21-Sept. 1 Theft was reported in the 200 block of E. Oak between the above dates. Police said an unknown suspect stole a cheerleading duffle bag from a victim’s vehicle while it was parked unoccupied in a driveway.

ronmental Design Strategies in Architecture, 1925-1970. The tour begins at the west entrance of the West Hall building, off the parking lot. The public is invited to attend. Led by Bruce Mather, Elmhurst College’s executive director of facilities management, this one-hour tour will highlight eco-friendly aspects of West Hall and the surrounding grounds. Participants on the Eco-Tour will receive free admission to the Lessons from Modern-

ism exhibition at the Elmhurst Art Museum, on display now through November 29. The exhibition looks at a group of 20th Century modern architecture projects and explores their innovations in environmental design for today’s practice. The West Hall Eco-Tour brings the exhibition up to date with a contemporary example of sustainable or “green” architecture. West Hall, which opened its doors in 2008, is a prime example of how Elmhurst College puts principles of sus-

The residence hall features a solar water-heating system, eco-friendly building materials and many energy-conserving and sustainable elements in its structure and grounds. The building was one of the first of its kind in Illinois to achieve that status.

As part of that commitment, we have partnered with the Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L) Cardiac Screening Program, a not-for-profit organization affiliated with Advocate Charitable Foundation, to offer free electrocardiograms (ECGs) to identify high school students at risk for heart conditions. According to YH4L, each week, sudden cardiac death claims the lives of more than 60 young adults in the U.S. YH4L has been a leader in the medical community to address this problem in the Chicago area. Addison Trail boys soccer team off to strong start By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ADDISON — The Addison Trail boys soccer team was off to a 5-2 start through its first seven contests. Addison Trail scored wins over Lake Park (2-0), Illiana Christian (7-0), Curie (8-0), Maine West (4-0) and Glenbard South (2-1). The team’s losses have come to Glenbard North (2-0) and West Suburban Conference Gold Division foe Morton (5-0). Forward Enrique Luna had five goals and three assists for the Blazers through late last week. “Enrique is playing really well for us at forward,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “His speed and playmaking ability has been really good.” The team also has received a spark on defense from Uriel Martinez. “Uriel is playing great defense,” said Dini. “This is his third year on varsity and he is the leader of this team. He aligns the defense and is rock-solid on the back.” Martinez has also scored a goal this season on a set play. Goalie Cosme Garcia has four shutouts and a 1.14 goals-against average. “Cosme is vocal and can

move well for his size,” said Dini. Junior Christian Santiago also has played well of late. “Christian is a junior who has gone from the JV team to the varsity team,” said Dini. “He brings a quick tempo to our team with his decision-making and intelligence. He plays center midfield and has been a spark for us this season.” Dini said the team has put a major focus on possession play this season. “We have a lot of players who have good touch with the ball so we are trying to switch the point of attack as much as possible,” he said. Dini added defense has been another strong point. “Our defense has been really solid this year,” he said. “We had an off game against Morton, but they are an elite team. They are No. 2 in the state for a reason and when you don’t have your ‘A’ game against a team like that they are going to make you pay.” The coach also cited improvement in terms of adjusting to the opposition. “We spend a great amount of time in the film room watching previous games and learning from our mistakes,” said Dini. “The players are paying attention to details and are doing

The Addison Trail football team notched a 28-26 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win over Willowbrook in the annual District 88 game. The win moves Addison Trail to 2-1 overall. It was the WSC Gold opener for both teams. Willowbrook dropped to 1-2 with the loss. Addison Trail holds a 9-3 edge in the district series since 2004. The Blazers have won the past two meetings. The Blazers return home Friday at 7:30 p.m. against winless Downers Grove South (0-3). Addison Trail girls volleyball The Addison Trail girls volleyball team split a pair of recent non-conference matches with Maine East and Trinity. In a 25-23, 20-25, 25-20 win over Maine East, Alyssa Pham had one dig. Anastasia Labadessa had five aces, one kill, 34 assists and one dig. Carla Muell added two assists. Danielle Tulke had three aces, one assist and one dig. JessicaMell had two aces and 12 kills and hit .500. Keara Schmitt had nine kills. We also need to work on our concentration between hits.” Kelsy Bauers has been playing well of late. “Kelsy has done a great job working on her game and really trying to get better,” said Stewart. Stewart noted Addison Trail already has doubled its win total from a year ago.

FENTON SPORTS REPORT Fenton girls volleyball team finishes second in own tournament; Football team loses to Ridgewood; Bison cross-country teams compete in invitational. By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Fenton girls volleyball team recently took second at its own Bison Blast-Off Tournament. Fenton won the Blue pool by scoring victories over Curie (25-19, 25-17), North Chicago (25-6, 25-7) and Waukegan (2523, 25-20). The Bison defeated Ridgewood in the semifinals 26-24, 25-20 and then lost to Deerfield 25-16, 25-21 in the championship match. In other recent action Fenton downed Proviso West 25-8, 25-13 in a non-conference match. That upped Fenton’s record to 6-1 heading into conference play. That was the Bison’s best start to the season in more than 20 years. Fenton opened Metro Suburban Conference West Division play with a 25-12, 25-19 loss to IC Catholic Prep. The Bison also lost a conference match to Riverside-Brookfield (25-14,

25-9). Fenton was 6-3 overall and 0-2 in MSC West play through late last week. Paulina Malinowski has been one of numerous key contributors for Fenton. She had 103 assists through late last week. Emmy Burris had 62 kills, while Jessica Bango had 40 digs. Natalia Skop has been the team’s top server with 17 aces and connecting on 86 of 90 attempts from the line. “Right now, with the exception of our match against a very good Riverside-Brookfield team, we are competing at a very high level,” said Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer. “Our serving has usually been very strong and Paulina has done a tremendous job of getting Emmy the ball.” The coach also lauded the recent play of middle blockers Maggie Rusiecka and Melinda Boehm, who each have nine blocks on the season. “Those are two players who have stepped it up lately,” said Kleidorfer. Kleifdorfer added the team continues to work hard in the serve-receive area. “Until our serve-receive becomes a strength, we are going to struggle with the top teams,” she said. “Our conference is loaded with strong teams so we need to keep improving daily.”
