Police announce roadside safety checkpoint The Addison Police Department will also be conducting a Roadside Safety Checkpoint from 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 until 1 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 for vehicles traveling southbound on Illinois Route 83 at I-290. Vehicles traveling southbound on Illinois Route 83 on September 30 will be stopped in a pre-established, systematic fashion for a brief inspection of safety and driver violations. Police will be checking vehicle reg-

istrations, driver’s licenses, proof of insurance, and driver sobriety in addition to vehicle safety violations. The purpose of conducting the Roadside Safety Checkpoint is to enhance the safety of the motoring public in the Village of Addison. Addison hosts Industrial Job Expo On Sept. 17, about 135 people attended the Addison Industrial Job Expo, which took place at Addison Trail. During that event, participants were able to meet face to face with local employers and submit their résumé. About 12 people also came to an interview readiness seminar led by College of DuPage (COD), during which COD staff and Addison Trail students helped participants create a résumé. The expo was an initiative of the Addison Workforce Development Committee, which is comprised of the Village of Addison and local businesses and organizations. The focus of that group is two-fold:

Addison Sept. 22 • Kevin J. Campos-Adame, 22, Giana R. Palmero, 18, and Carlos Ortiz-Roque, 19, all of Addison, were issued citations by police near Neva and Waveland at around 10:20 p.m. Police said Campos-Adame and Palmero were in possession of a grinder, while Ortiz-Roque was in possession of cannabis. • Luis M. Morones-Ramirez, 32, of Addison, was arrested near Addison and Moreland at around 12:50 a.m. and charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and no insurance following a traffic stop. Sept. 19 Argeny Aguilar-Pino, 31, of Addison, was arrested in the 1-100 block of Elizabeth Dr. at

around 4:58 p.m. Police said Aguilar-Pino had two failure to appear warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department on traffic charges. Sept. 18 • Francisco Atilano-Flores, 34, of Elk Grove Village, was arrested in the 1-100 block of E. Lake St. at around 9:08 p.m. and charged with DUI, illegal transportation of open alcohol, driving while license revoked and no insurance following a traffic accident. • A 31-year-old Addison man was arrested at around 8:10 p.m. and charged with domestic battery. Sept. 17 Guadalupe Perez, 24, of Joliet, was arrested near Mill and Green Oaks at around 2:13 p.m. and charged with DUI, speeding and improper lane usage following a traffic stop. Sept. 16 Jeremy J. Gates, 27, of Addison, was arrested in the 600 block of N. Swift Road at around 4:52 p.m. According to police, Gates had an

original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for criminal trespass to property. He also was cited with an administrative adjunction ticket for possession of cannabis, police said. Villa Park Sept. 17 Theft was reported at a local store at around 3 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect stole an iPhone5 that was inadvertently left in the women’s restroom. Sept. 16 • James A. Stehle, 72, of Lombard, was arrested in the 1-100 block of S. Ardmore at around 12:39 p.m. and charged with battery, resisting a police officer and disobeying a traffic control device. • Theft was reported at a local high school. Police said that between 7:45 and 10:30 p.m., an unknown suspect stole an iPhone and charger from a locker room. • Battery was reported in the 300 block of N. Princeton at around 4:46 p.m. Police said two unknown suspects battered a male victim after a verbal altercation. Sept. 15 Andrew M. Santilli, 33, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 200 block of E. Roosevelt at around 7:51 p.m. and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sept. 12 A stolen vehicle was reported in the 100 block of E. St. Charles at around 4:21 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect stole a vehicle that was parked on the street running and unsecured. The victim’s purse, phone and iPad also were in the vehicle when it was stolen.

Sept. 11 Criminal damage to a vehicle was reported in the 900 block of W. North Ave. Police said that between 12 noon and 3 p.m., an unknown suspect broke a window of a vehicle parked in the parking lot.

Students urged to apply for Prudential Spirit of Community Awards The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which recognize students in grades 5 through 12 who have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service over the past year, are coming soon and local students are encouraged to enter. The awards were created in 1995 to recognize middle-level and high school students for helping people in need, promoting health and safety, protecting the environment or volunteering in other ways. The awards are presented annually on the local, state and national levels. Applicants for 2017 must complete an online application (which can be found at spirit.prudential.com or nassp.org/spirit. (Paper applications can be requested by calling 1-877-525-8491.) After completing the application, submit it to a middle or high school principal, Girl Scout council, County 4-H agent, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or HandsOn Network affiliate. Deadline for submissions is November 8, 2016.

Participating schools and local organizations will select local honorees in early November and present them with Certificates of Achievement. Those local honorees also will receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award from U.S. President Barack Obama, if they have contributed the minimum number of volunteer hours to qualify (26 hours for age 10 and younger, 50 hours for ages 11 to 15 and 100 hours for older students). All local honorees are then reviewed by a state-level judging committee, which will name the top two candidates from each state and the District of Columbia – one high school student and one middle-level student – as state honorees on Feb. 7, 2017. Those state honorees will receive $1,000 awards, engraved silver medallions and an all-expensepaid trip to Washington, D.C., with a parent/guardian for four days of recognition events from May 6 to 9, 2017. Distinguished Finalists at the state

level will receive bronze medallions, and runners-up will receive Certificates of Excellence. In Washington, a distinguished national selection committee will name 10 of the 102 State Honorees

as America’s top youth volunteers of the year. Those national honorees will receive additional awards of $5,000, gold medallions, crystal trophies for their nominating schools or organizations and $5,000 grants

IT band students attend Chicago Sky basketball Last Friday night, Sept. 16, 23 Indian Trail Junior High School band students and 5 musically gifted

adults served as “The Band of the Game” at the Chicago Sky basketball game held at the Allstate Arena

in Rosemont. The band performed “The Theme from ‘Rawhide’” before the game.

They performed during a quick TV time-out during the first half and then played “Smoke on the Water” and “The Batman Theme” during half-time. This is the fourth time the Indian Trail Band has played for Sky games, between the school year and summer band outings. Band director Lawrence Underwood has made a practice of taking his students on the road, giving them an opportunity to perform for larger audiences than they would normally entertain at school concerts. The band’s connection to the Sky is Julie Seyller, vice president of ticket sales, service and marketing.

Having worked with Indian Trail in her previous position with the Chicago Wolves, Underwood was the first director she called when the Sky began featuring school bands at their games. “This is really a great opportunity for the students,” she said. “We’ve been going back every chance we get.” The band is also scheduled for future performances at other local sports venues. They will play at the Chicago Fire game on Sunday, October 3 and the Chicago Wolves game on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017.

ITJH Builders Club helps Kiwanis Peanut Day Members of the Indian Trail Junior High School Builders Club participated in the Addison Kiwanis Peanut Day fundraising campaign on Thursday and Friday this week. Students and adult staff members collected donations from customers at the Addison La Huerta/La Placita

Taqueria, Dairy Queen, Cilantro, and Culvers. The Builders Club is the junior high level of the Kiwanis Club and it focuses on serving the school and community through a variety of service-based projects, including a group that visits a local nursing home.

Willowbrook boys golf The Willowbrook boys golf team lost 143-181 to Downers Grove South in recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division action at Sugar Creek in Villa Park (par-32). Junior Tim Keefe shot 43 to lead Willowbrook. Junior Buddy Martens shot a 44, while sophomore Joey Guthrie had a 36 and junior Max Venchus shot 48. Willowbrook also competed in the Addison Trail “Ryder Cup” quad at Indian Lakes Golf Club’s Highland course (par 36). In this format, the first through third holes were best ball, while holes 4-6 were alternate shot and holes 7-9 were contested in a scramble format. Guthrie had the highlight of the match for Willowbrook when he recorded a hole-in-one on the par3, 135-yard fourth hole (see related story).

Willowbrook finished with a team total of 135. Addison Trail was first at 120, Glenbard North (127) and Morton (132) followed. Willowbrook sophomore golfer Joey Guthrie is now the owner of the sport’s Holy Grail of milestones. Guthrie shot a hole-in-one at the recent Addison Trail (Ryder Cup) quad held at Indian Lakes Golf Club’s Highland course in Bloomingdale (par 36). Guthrie recorded the ace on the course’s par-3, 135-yard fourth hole. It was his first career hole in one. “The wind was in my face. I hit an 8-iron and it took two bounces and rolled about a foot and then dropped,” said Guthrie. Guthrie had the pleasure of watching it go in the hole. “I saw it go in,” he said. “One of our opponents called it and said it had a chance of going in when I hit it and it did. I dropped my club and jumped and screamed. It was very cool.” Guthrie had an inkling he did well off the fourth tee. “Yeah, it felt great when I hit it,” he said. “It was a nice

and smooth swing. I knew I would be pretty close to the pin, but I didn’t expect it to go in.” Guthrie said he’s been golfing for about 2 ½ years. “I started going to the range with my dad and whacking balls around and enjoyed myself,” he said. “I wanted to learn and develop my swing after that and I’ve been playing ever since. I’ve stuck with it.” Guthrie counts Village Links in Glen Ellyn as his off-season course when he’s not playing with the Willowbrook team at Sugar Creek in Villa Park. Guthrie takes private lessons through Village Links. “My consistency is better this year,” he said. “Last year I would hit a couple good shots and a couple bad ones. This year I’m more even. My irons also are starting to get a lot better.” Guthrie counts his short game as the best part of his golf arsenal. “My short game on the green and around the game is strong,” said Guthrie, who shot a season-low 87 for 18

holes earlier this season for Willowbrook in a meet at St. Andrews in West Chicago. “I enjoy high-school golf,” he said. “You get to play golf every day. It’s a good time out there and it’s a stress reliever.” Guthrie, who has a 3.25 gradepoint average, is a three-sport athlete at Willowbrook, also competing in basketball and baseball. “It kind of gets tough when it get busy with homework,” he explained. “I have to make sure I don’t lollygag at home and make sure I get my work done and keep my grades up.” Guthrie has set his sights on finishing the season strong. Willowbrook competes in Class 3A regional play this week. “I’m playing pretty well right now,” he said late last week. “Hopefully I can perform well at regionals and possibly advance to sectionals.” Guthrie also wouldn’t mind history repeating itself off the tee. “I would love to get another hole in one,” he said with a laugh.

The hits keep coming in the Addison Trail girls tennis team’s record-breaking season. The Blazers got off to an 8-2 overall start in dual matches and 3-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play before losing to perennial conference powerhouse Downers Grove South late last week. However, Addison Trail reached a pair of milestones in the Downers South match. For the first time in coach Justin Hegner’s 11 years at the school, an Addison Trail player won a match against a Downers Grove South player (Pa-

mela Kobeszko at No. 2 singles). Also, the Addison Trail No. 1 doubles team of Jessica Bach and Gianna Sarli lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, becoming the first Blazers’ doubles team to take a set off Downers South. “In the past 11 years we had not won a match or set against Downers Grove South,” said Hegner. “They usually are the powerhouse. This year we won a match and our first doubles took them to a tough three-set match. We had a couple other close matches as well. It’s definitely the most competitive we have ever been with them in my 11 years of coaching.” Addison Trail upped its record

to 3-0 in conference with previous wins against Willowbrook (7-0) and Morton (5-2). In the Willowbrook match, the Addison Trail No. 2 doubles team of Meryem Ahmed and Viany Ortiz played a three-hour and 10-minute match, winning 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3 tiebreak). “They even had to finish in the dark at Willowbrook since the sun set at 7 p.m. and the match went until 7:30 p.m.,” noted Hegner. “It was the best match of the year.” Hegner said one key difference this season is Addison Trail is holding its own when matches come down to the wire. “We are winning a lot of our close match-

es,” he said. “If our girls have a chance to win they win. They also never give up even when they are down in a match.” Hegner said the team is hard at work improving the mental aspect of its game. “We know that tennis has a lot of mental ups and downs and we are trying to keep those downs to a minimum,” he said. Hegner also lauded the recent play of Bach and Sarli. “They have been doing very well and are our best mentally focused girls on the team,” he said. “This is only their second year playing tennis. you how quickly they have learned over the last two years. They are taking strong teams to the edge and have beaten many teams that we have lost to in the past.” Hegner said the team is working hard at attaining even more success. “We have had the best season I have coached so far,” he said. “In the past our best record at the end of the season was 7-6 and we already have passed that. We have been winning most of our close matches and have been mentally strong for the most part. If we can continue this we have a chance to have the best season in school history for the tennis team.”

Addison Trail’s top two doubles teams are helping contribute to a record-breaking girls tennis season

Addison Trail No. 1 doubles player Gianna Sarli knows exactly why the team is enjoying one of its best seasons in school history. The Blazers had won eight of their first 10 contests, establishing a new high-water mark for victories during coach Justin Hegner’s 11 years at the helm. “We all decided to work really hard this year,” said Sarli, who teams with Jessica Bach at No. 1 doubles. “We work really hard at practice so every time we play we can win as many matches as (possible). This is really fun. I know I am enjoying it. You have a lot of fun when you are successful.” Sarli and Bach have played tennis for only two years. Both are former volleyball players. “We work really well together,” said Sarli. “We are good communicators. We try and go out and do the best we can every match.” Sarli said it was a matter of wanting to try a new sport in the fall that led her to the Blazers’ tennis program. “A few of my friends were into tennis and said it was fun so I decided to give it a try and see how it goes,” she said. “It was all very new at first, but I really like it.” Bach added: “I had never played tennis before. I’m not exactly sure why I switched. A lot of my friends were playing and I said why not? I needed a change of pace.” Sarli said Addison Trail is winning matches because of its never give up attitude. “One of our strengths is we are very resilient,” she said. “Even if we aren’t playing our best, we still try to do special things. We keep working hard in practice. We never settle. We always want to get better.” No. 2 doubles player Meryem Ahmed agrees. “We never give up,” she said. “Even in games where we are losing, we still come back strong every time. There are a lot of strong partnerships and friendships on this team. The communication is good and so are the connections with each other.” Ahmed and Viany Ortiz comprise Addison Trail’s successful No. 2 doubles team that recently scored a hard-fought win over Willowbrook in a match that took three hours and 10 minutes to complete. They were 10-4 as a team through late last week. “We have really good players who are passionate about the sport,” said Ortiz. “We also like to have fun a lot. We’re all very close to each other. It’s a great group of friends.” Ortiz admitted there was some question heading into the season exactly how good the team would do. Those questions were quickly answered. “It’s pretty cool. Winning is magnificent,” she said. “Coming into the season nobody knew where we re-

We balance each other out. I stay calm and collected.” Ahmed said the Willowbrook victory was an emotional one for her and Ortiz. “We were a point from losing, but we got it back and didn’t let them get any points and ended up winning,” she said. “We never quit. When we started losing, we started pushing harder. It might have looked like we didn’t have a chance, but we did have a chance. We’ve been beating teams we never have beaten before.” Ahmed also is a big fan of the fun atmosphere around the team that she said has played a major role in the team’s success. “We do team-bonding things. We have to stay positive and keep doing what we do and play our best tennis ever.”

After a tough start to the 2015 season, the Fenton football team is settling in and showing plenty of signs of progress. The Bison have won two of their last three games. After starting 0-2, Fenton defeated Guerin Prep (330) and Walther Christian (48-0) and lost 41-7 to Glenbard South in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division opener for both teams. Earlier last week, Fenton coach Mark Kos noted he’s seen advancements on both sides of the football. “It was nice for us to get into the win column,” said Kos, speaking of the recent Guerin Prep and Walther Christian games. “Our guys got comfortable with our offense that we installed this summer. We had some success with it and that instilled some confidence.” Kos also liked the play of both lines. “Our line play was good, especially our defensive line, which is vastly improved,” he said. Kos lauded the recent play of Dylan Butts and Ivan Rodriguez on defense. “We’re playing better defense and our offense is gaining confidence and those things paid better dividends (in the two wins),”

he said. Kos noted the coaching staff completely revamped the offense in the off-season, going to a spread formation. “The kids had to learn now terminology and concepts with what we wanted to accomplish,” he said. “We needed the repetitions and once that happened and they saw they can have success with it, the light bulb went off.” Beyond Xs and Os and wins and losses, Kos is having a blast coaching this year’s Bison group. “It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “This is a great group of kids. They have made the first half of the season fly by. They have a commitment to the team and each other.” Sophomore quarterback Kyle Cacioppo also has drawn praise from Kos. “Kyle exceeded expectations the first four weeks,” he said. “He’s a natural at the position and he’s a leader as evidenced by the seniors choosing him to be an honorary captain in the first week.” Cacioppo has had success throwing the ball to wide receiver Tyler Santagata. “He continues to show what he can do on the practice field and in games,” said Kos of Santagata. In addition to Santagata, Cacioppo

also throws to wide receivers Carlos and Nick Mercado. Besides Butts, Fenton’s line also has been bolstered by the play of center Danny Lucas. “He’s done a great job of tackling the leadership role,” said Kos. “He’s a vocal leader and has done great anchoring our line.” Fenton has four conference games remaining. All five of Fenton’s MSC Blue Division opponents made the playoffs last year. “We have some stiff tests the rest of the season,” said Kos. “The schedule won’t get any easier, but we are excited for the challenge. If we want to be a playoff team we have to beat playoff teams. We’re going to go out there and play hard and represent Fenton and the community to the best of our ability.” In the victory against Walther, Greg Cazares and Santagata each had two touchdowns, while Butts and Abel Rivera each had a score. “We had a great performance against Walther,” said Kos. “We challenged the kids to be dominant against them early and they did that. We scored the first six times we had the ball and we did not punt in the first half. The team stepped up and met the challenge.”

Fenton girls volleyball team takes third at Ridgewood tournament By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT

The Fenton girls volleyball team had a strong showing at the recent Ridgewood tournament. The Bison finished third there after winning three matches. Fenton recorded a 25-13, 25-8 win over host Ridgewood and then lost 18-25, 25-19, 15-4 to Chicago Taft. Fenton also lost 25-23, 25-21 to Lisle and came back to defeat Woodlands Academy 25-17, 25-16 and DePaul Prep 25-20, 25-17. In the tournament, Paulina Milanowski was 52 of 54 serving with seven aces. She also had 28 kills and 57 assists. Andrea Nieto had six kills, seven assists, one block and six digs. “Andrea had a very good tournament with her contributions,” said Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer. Mackenzie Miller was 40 of 41 serving with eight aces and also had 28 assists. Maggie Rusiecka was a perfect 36 of 36 serving with three aces and 23 kills. Natalie Skop was 29 of 29 serving with 31 kills. “As evidenced by the stats, our serving really carried us through the tournament,” said Kleidorfer. Kleidorfer lauded the continued strong contributions from Milanowski. “Paulina has shown that she is not only our best player, but that she certainly is one of the best players in the entire area,” she said. Fenton also recently dropped a 25-18, 25-7 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game to Glenbard South and a 25-15, 25-18 conference decision to Aurora Central Catholic. Fenton was 9-13 overall through late last week. Fenton played in the inaugural Harvest Christian Academy tournament in Elgin this past weekend. Fenton was slated to play Class 1A power Faith Lutheran and Class 2A power Rockford Keith Country Day, as well as Elgin St. Edward, all in pool play there. The Bison had only one match scheduled this week, a MSC Blue Division contest against IC Catholic Prep to open the second round of conference play. “With the seeding for the state tournament coming up we are looking to add a few wins and are certainly going to be working to get our first conference win,” said Kleidorfer.
