Now is a key turning point in the state of Illinois and there needs to be urgency in passing the Governor’s Turnaround Agenda or Democrats should pass a tax increase with a supermajority to balance the budget. That’s according to Illinois’ Republican Governor. Governor Bruce Rauner addressed a crowd on Wednesday, October 7 in Oak Lawn, where he talked about the ongoing budget impasse, efficiencies agencies he controls are finding to save taxpayers’ money and the need to address collective bargaining issues. The governor said lawmakers must consider his proposed reforms or take up another option — higher taxes. “But if you block reforms then use your supermajority to pass your own tax increase to pay for the spending level that you want,” he said. “But please choose now. Choose now. Time’s up.” Rauner said the state can’t ask taxpayers for more taxes with-

Bensenville Fire Protection District awarded federal grant The Bensenville Fire Protection District No. 2 was awarded a federal grant in the requested amount of $152,269 for the purchase of three 15-lead monitor/ defibrillators, three power lift cots/stretchers, and Blue Card Incident Commander Training for 13 Firefighter/Paramedics. The grant was awarded by FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighter’s grant. This grant will benefit the Bensenville community by providing a higher level of care through better technologies. The 15-lead monitor/defibrillators will enable paramedics to participate in on-going regional efforts to increase survival and morbidity rates in patients suffering from cardiac events by shortening the amount of time from a cardiac event to the time the patient receives definitive treatment in a cardiac cath lab. This leads to improvements in patient

outcomes. Early diagnosis and identification of heart attack issues also allows paramedics to alter their transportation and destination decisions and take the patient directly to a hospital certified and equipped to deal specifically with that condition. The power lift cots/stretchers use hydraulics to do the work of raising up the cot and lifting it into the ambulance. With one finger, one can lower or raise up to 700 pounds without lifting anything. In addition to cutting down on the risks for firefighters of lifting injuries there are also benefits for those in the community who may have to take an ambulance ride. The steer lock feature on the cots allows just one man to drive it. For example if we have a cardiac patient or other critical patient that needs constant attention this allows one man to drive the cot while the other tends to the patient.

Continued from page 1 out reforms. Illinois is now into month four of the new fiscal year without a budget. In a press release following the Governor’s speech, Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan said the ongoing budget impasse is due to the Governor’s decision to veto the spending bill approved by lawmakers, a budget Republicans said was upwards of $4 billion out of balance. The governor said the General Assembly is constitutionally obligated to pass a balanced budget. Rauner wants to modify collective bargaining issues Illinois’ Governor wants to remove health insurance and other issues from collective bargaining in an effort he says will save taxpayers billions. During a speech in Oak Lawn Wednesday Governor Bruce Rauner said he wants to modify what can be collectively bargained like health care benefits. Rauner said removing items from collective bargaining is not a radical or partisan idea and will help steer money to economic growth and to those in most need of vital state services. “It’s about making sure that tax dollars go to education, economic growth, tourism marketing, and services for the most vulnerable. Not to expensive government bureaucracy Rauner said Illinois is an outlier on these issues and that 33 states limit all or a portion of collective bargaining in state and local governments. Speaker Michael Madigan said in a press release after Rauner’s speech that his caucus

will not quote “devastate Illinois’ middle class and struggling families by furthering an agenda aimed at driving down their wages and their standard of living.” Governor open to Chicago casino as concession A Chicago casino could assist Illinois out of a budget crisis but the governor says the legislature would still have to approve some of his Turnaround Agenda items. Governor Bruce Rauner said in a speech to the Chicago Southland Convention and Visitor’s Bureau in Oak Lawn on Wednesday, October 7, he would be open to the idea of a Chicago casino, among other concessions like financial assistance to Chicago Public Schools. A supporter of expanding gambling, Democratic Representative Bob Rita said the Governor’s Turnaround Agenda, the budget and expanded gambling are all different items. “The budget is one issue and the non-budgetary items is a different issue, no different than we look at gaming a different issue, Rita said. “Even though it would provide revenue to the state they’re all three separate–it’s not all intertwined.” Regardless of willingness to support expanding a casino in Chicago, Rauner said he still wants lawmakers to approve items from his Turnaround Agenda, including allowing local governments the ability to opt out of certain collective bargaining issues as a way to save money.

The Blue Card Incident Commander Training and Certification Program is designed to manage certain incidents that account for more than 99 percent of a

department’s activity. The officers will greatly benefit from this program in that they will have the ability to better serve the community.

Thank you for the goldfish, I think T his is an open letter to the Carnival Guy who “awarded” my kid with a goldfish at the local fair this past summer. What can I say? Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it. Everyone knows that nurturing, feeding and otherwise sustaining any and all household pets (including goldfish, salamanders and tree frogs) is at the top of every mom’s job description. We live to de-poop the fish tank. But back to that fateful day. I innocently sent my kid to the carnival thinking maybe he’d come home with a bellyful of corn dogs or mini donuts. Instead and he marched into the house with a clear plastic bag filled with water and a goldfish (not necessarily in that order). He was beaming – my son, not the fish. To say he likes critters is an understatement. Coming home with a goldfish?

SLICES OF LIFE

It was his lucky day! I wasn’t feeling the love. I’d sworn off fish as pets years ago, after three large tanks and many births, deaths and countless instances of parents eating their young. Fish can be complicated, barbaric beings. That said, our current situation seemed simple enough for fish aficionados like us. We could deal with just one tiny fish. How much could he eat and poop? Problem was, our situation was about to multiply. My kid is a critter magnet, and the apple doesn’t fall far

from the tree. I’m a bit of a sucker for them myself. It seems other moms don’t share my weakness. A few of my son’s friends also won fish at the carnival but they knew better than to take them home. Before long, a second carnival “prize” showed up at our doorstep. And then another. And another. Apparently other moms have mastered the word, “No,” better than me. That is how we went from zero goldfish to four in less than an hour. I’ve seen fish multiply before, but never like this. We looked for a larger bowl. We put in some rocks and de-chlorinated water. We tried to make the tank homey for our new pets. It took some effort, but we got the four musketeers settled in their new habitat and I remained optimistic that our fish situation was a temporary one. I figured they’d be belly up and ready for the flusher in

short order. How healthy could four carnival goldfishes be? In a word: Very. Apparently carnival life is a great start for goldfish. One might think they would be squished together in large numbers in small tanks all swishing and swashing as the carnival travels from one town to another. Our goldfish flourish with swishing and swashing. They’ve completed the twoplus hour car trip with us to the lake three times now and we haven’t drowned a single one. It’s been a couple of months, and our fish are thriving. I feed them twice a day. When I do, they congregate at the top of the water in anticipation of their goldfish flakes. I don’t want to brag, but as goldfish go, I think they are at the top of the intelligence meter. They have voracious appetites and are growing bigger. In short, they show no sign

Frank Lloyd Wright day trip I first met Cindy several years ago when I hosted her for a weekend at the start of her exchange program. She ended up being placed with a host family outside of Chicago and went to college at a community college there for her one year in America. Since the locale turned out be relatively close, I hired Cindy to be my assistant one day a week doing organizational duties for me. Mainly we took day trips so I could show her the glorious Midwest. We are now forever friends and she comes back every year as she fell head over heels in love with Chicago. At the ripe age of 26, she has traveled extensively, some trips with friends or family, some solo. Her love of travel and love of learning make her a wonderful houseguest. Cindy knows more about Chicago than many natives. She knows more about a lot of things than many people, or at least me. This past weekend we offered availability to do anything and go anywhere with her. She has

studied Frank Lloyd Wright (and American architecture in general) so we traipsed up to Spring Green, Wisconsin to tour Taliesin, Frank’s home and studio. Taliesin (pronounced Tally – ESS – in) is on land where Frank grew up, on the Wisconsin river, set on the hillside with a view to make you sigh as if you’ve seen Heaven on earth. Taliesin is a Welsh word meaning “shining brow” and that is where he placed his dwelling, as if it is part of the jutting sandstone bluffs. The top of the hill, the crown, is not built upon. Frank liked his architecture to be organic, seeming part of the environment. He used local woods and stone, and kept his color scheme true to natural tones of the area. Even

at his farm there, he had only certain chickens, cows and pigs to match his color palette. We toured the 600-acre estate and the 21,000 square foot home (37,000 square feet if you include the courtyards) along with his school that still houses and teaches graduate level architecture students. Fascinating and inspiring, I still would never have commissioned Frank to build a home for me. His ceilings are too low. A fabulous day was spent in Wisconsin taking in Frank, the scenery, and cheese curds. I fancy architecture and am a bit of an information junkie, but not a devotee of any one thing or person. I appreciate people like Cindy who are walking fact factories. Frank designed nearly 500 homes and buildings in his long career. He narrowed down a list of 38 that he really loved and only 21 of his creations boast a red tile with his initials signifying his stamp of approval. Imagine our delight the next day when we were able to show

Cindy the Laurent House in our hometown of Rockford, IL and read that it made Frank’s list of his fave 38. And imagine our surprise when we discovered it has the signature red tile at the entry door. I may not be a wealth of deep information but I do love to provide a lovely experience for guests and find things that light them up. My thanks to Frank and the Laurent House board for making a German gal (and this American gal) very happy. Lessons I learned include there is always something new to explore and appreciate, and there are always treasures under one’s nose that we may not discover until someone else comes along to stir our interest. To that, I give my own stamp of approval. Kelly Epperson Simmons has built houses of cards, sticks, and still loves dollhouses. of going belly up anytime soon. We’ve even committed the universal gesture of permanent pethood. We’ve named them: Big Goldy, Little Goldy, Brownie and Spot. I guess our quadruplets are here to stay. So that is why I’m writing today. It is because of you, Carnival Guy, that we are in our current situation. We owe our good fortune to you (as do Goldy et al.) and for that I send a weary, albeit wet, “Thanks.” The fish have sort of grown on us and I guess we’ll keep them. As for next year and your carnival, we may have to take a pass. I think my kid will be busy that day – changing the water in the fish tank.

What you think you know about Social Security may be totally wrong much they’ll be eligible to receive, and when they can start drawing benefits without penalty. The survey, by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), included a true/false quiz about Social Security facts. Just 28 percent of those surveyed scored a passing grade, and only one person out of the 1,500 polled was able to answer all survey questions correctly. The survey results illustrated a 186149

(BPT) — Americans may have faith in the Social Security system, but many still don’t really understand how it works. That’s a key take-away from a recent survey of Americans’ knowledge of Social Security retirement benefits. While 63 percent of respondents said they do believe Social Security benefits will be available to them when they retire, many were confused about who qualifies for benefits, how

significant lack of knowledge about Social Security, including: • Although 75 percent of those surveyed thought being an American citizen is a requirement to receive Social Security retirement benefits, this is not the case. Noncitizens lawfully living in the U.S., and who have permission to work here, can obtain a Social Security number, pay into the Social Security system and draw benefits. • More than seven in 10 respondents mistakenly thought that 65 is the age when everyone can begin drawing full retirement benefits. Actually, your full retirement age depends on what year you were born. • Fifty-five percent of those surveyed incorrectly believed they could continue working during retirement while collecting full Social Security benefits, regardless of their age. If you work during retirement, but have not yet reached your full retirement age, your Social Security benefits may be reduced if you earn too much. Once you reach full retirement age, those withheld benefits will be repaid over your lifetime. “Perhaps the greatest Social Security deficit in this country is the

lack of education around the retirement benefits of the program,” says Michael R. Fanning, executive vice president, U.S. Insurance Group, MassMutual. “With millions of Americans nearing retirement each year, many may be at risk of underutilizing a critical component of their retirement income stream.” Still, some good news emerged from the survey. Americans seem aware that Social Security should be only one component of their overall retirement savings plan. Just 39 percent said they expected to rely more on Social Security than their personal savings or income during retirement, and just 15 percent expected to rely solely on Social Security. You can test your Social Security knowledge by taking the MassMutual quiz. Here are some Social Security facts to help improve your knowledge: • No single filing strategy works for everyone filing for Social Security benefits; there are just too many variables. For example, a married couple may have hundreds of options for filing for Social Security retirement benefits.

• Americans are living longer. It’s no longer sufficient to plan for just 10 years of retirement. You may well need savings and income to carry you for three decades or longer. • While Social Security can be an important component of your retirement plan, you need to have other income as well. Under- or overvaluing your Social Security retirement benefits could keep you from getting a true picture of your retirement savings plans. A qualified financial professional can better help you understand how Social Security fits into your personal situation. NAPERVILLE AND ELMHURST – As part of the next phase of its “Healthy Driven” initiative, Edward-Elmhurst Health has introduced a new website – EEHealth.org – to provide patients and visitors with information about the system’s services, programs, classes and locations.Race car driver Danica Patrick, who will serve through early 2016 as the system’s “Healthy Driven” spokesperson, is prominently featured on several pages of EEHealth.org. Other highlights of the new website include Healthy Driven blogs, an easy-to-use “Find a Doctor” search function, ER Wait Times and Edward-Elmhurst’s HealthAware screenings, which are free, five-minute tests to determine a person’s risk for diseases or disorders.Tens of thousands have taken the HealthAware screenings since they began in 2009, with thousands seeking and receiving additional testing and treatment after they were found at-risk. The Edward-Elmhurst HealthAware Center includes assessments for addiction, anxiety, breast cancer, depression, diabetes, heart disease, lung cancer, sleep disorders and stroke.“What makes EEHealth.org unique is the opportunity it provides in so many ways for people to get engaged in and take charge of their own health,” says Pam Davis, System CEO, Edward-Elmhurst Health. “Edward-Elmhurst Health is a leader in prevention and wellness, and we’re determined to motivate as many people as possible to join

The new campaign will include TV and radio commercials, newspaper and magazine ads, billboards, online advertising, direct marketing and social media.“In many cases when it comes to our health, we don’t get the equivalent of a “check engine” warning that we get in our vehicles,” says Patrick, who will be a guest blogger on EEHealth.org. “But, with tools like the HealthAware screenings, Edward-Elmhurst Health has ways to identify and address health risks before they become serious.”Edward-Elmhurst Health, which began its “Healthy Driven” program in late 2014, includes Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health. The system, created in 2013 following the merger of Edward Hospital and Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, has more than 50 outpatient locations across a service area of 1.7 million residents in the west and southwest suburbs of Chicago, 7,400 employees and 1,900 physicians on staff.

they go in for a physical exam or have a medical event. In fact, a third of Americans who have AFib are still undiagnosed, noted a 2015 report from the American Heart Association. Early diagnosis and treatment is key Early detection of AFib is critical to reduce unnecessary medical visits and prevent serious complications. However, AFib can occur intermittently or without symptoms, making it difficult to detect and diagnose. If a physician suspects AFib, they will typically conduct a physical examination and heartmonitoring tests. Traditional heart monitoring methods include an electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure the timing and duration of each electrical signal of the heart. New advancements in technology such as wireless, long-term, continuous cardiac monitors have significantly improved how AFib is diagnosed and managed. For example, iRhythm’s ZIO Service with a biosensor patch has the ability to monitor and store

The long-term continuous monitoring allows physicians to rule in, or even rule out, the diagnosis and characterization of AFib and potentially eliminating the need for further testing and resulting in faster treatment. surgery. People who are overweight, have high blood pressure, lung or thyroid issues or are under a lot of stress may also have an increased risk for AFib. Additionally, the risk for AFib increases with age, especially after 60. There is also a genetic component to AFib, so if someone in the family has it, the more likely the next generation will have it too. Without treatment, AFib can lead to serious health consequences, including: * Heart failure * Stroke * Fatigue * Shortness of breath What are the symptoms of AFib? Each year, millions of patients see physicians because they feel heart palpitations or report their heart is racing, quivering or fluttering, which are the most common symptoms of AFib. Other signs may include general fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, anxiety or weakness. (BPT) — An estimated 2.7 million Americans suffer from atrial fibrillation (AFib), an irregular heartbeat and the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia, according to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Surprisingly, many people do not feel any symptoms until they are suffering from complications of AFib such as heart failure or stroke. September is Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month. Take the time to understand your risk for AFib, and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. One out of every four strokes in the United States is a result of AFib, according to the American Heart Association. Patients who experience a stroke caused by AFib are twice as likely to be severely disabled, a 1996 Framingham Study found. Stroke prevention and heart failure prevention are primary treatment goals in AFib. Who is at risk for AFib? There are a number of risk factors associated with AFib, including existing heart conditions, prior heart attack or recent heart

Addison Trail to present fall play, ‘Twisted Tales of Terror’ ADDISON — Get into the spirit of Halloween later this month with Addison Trail’s fall play, “Twisted Tales of Terror” by Jeanine Harvey. The play will be performed Oct. 22, 24, 29 and 30 (7 p.m. all days, as well as a 2 p.m. performance on Oct. 24) at Addison Trail High School. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and children ages 3 to 12, $3 with an Activity Pass and are free with a District 88 Senior Gold Card. To buy tickets, call 630-628-3365, or e-mail at.theatre88@gmail. com. Watch as classic horror stories such as “Frankenstein,” “Dracula” and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” come to life – but not in the way you would expect. The tales get a new twist as Claudia, a Guardian of Dark Tales, retells them to her husband, Igor. Instead of being terrifying, the legends become

humorous. Characters behave in unexpected ways, and accidents occur, but all turns out well in the end. “This is a relatively new play, so it’s the first time it will be performed at Addison Trail,” said Anna Jakubka, Addison Trail Theatre Director. “The story is perfect for the season and allows us to showcase the talents of more than 40 of our students.” Jakubka added “Twisted Tales of Terror” is a different type of show than Addison Trail typically performs and features unique costumes, makeup and hair that fit the “horror” theme. “It’s a bit quirky and should definitely lead to some laughter from the crowd,” Jakubka said. Addison Trail senior Alex Toay will play Claudia and said this is her first lead role. “Claudia’s passion is telling stories, but she somehow always messes them up and

ends up interacting with the characters,” Toay said. “I love Halloween, so I’m thrilled to be part of this show!” And life will imitate art for Toay, as the part of Igor will be played by her boyfriend, junior Max Dziabis. “It’s a bit of a challenge to walk hunched over like Igor,” Dziabis said with a laugh. “A lot of my character’s role is reacting to the exposition from Claudia, so I have to be right on with my movements and how I respond to what she says.” He added audience members can expect to hear familiar scary stories told in a new and fun way. “What makes this show unique is the level of engagement with the audience,” Dziabis said. “There is virtually no fourth wall (the imaginary “wall” at the front of the stage in a traditional three-walled theatre).”

Addison Trail junior Max Dziabis (Igor) and senior Alex Toay (Claudia) rehearse a scene from Addison Trail’s fall play, “Twisted Tales of Terror.” The play will take place on Oct. 22, 24, 29 and 30.

KCs Juan Pablo II Council donates to D-88 program ADDISON — On Oct. 5, Knights of Columbus Juan Pablo II Council No. 14069 gave a monetary donation to benefit the District 88 Transition Program. That program helps students ages 19 to 21 who have disabilities learn life skills, obtain job training in a community setting and transition to life after District 88. One of the job-training sites for students is the Perks & Possibilities Café, which is open from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday inside the Addison Public Library. “Knights of Columbus is a national program that raises funds for individuals who have intellectual disabilities,” said Chuck Seriano, Treasurer for Knights of Columbus Juan Pablo II Council No. 14069. “Perks & Possibilities Café is a tremendous asset in our community to help train young people to obtain employment. The Transition Program is top-notch and has excellent results, and we want to support this wonderful opportunity for students.” Seriano said the money was raised through a fundraiser hosted by the council, and he and Deputy Grand Knight Michael Di Capua presented the donation. An exceptional characteristic of the café is that it is a community project that has united intergovernmental agencies, local businesses and donors to support student learning. Perks & Possibilities Café opened in March 2011 and is a result of the support provided by the community.

conference play. “We’ve started to put things back together,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Nancy D’Amore. “The girls are playing well. It’s a focus thing. The girls have refocused their energy back into the team, into the gym and into our goals. Practice has been more intense, which has really helped. In matches we are attacking more efficiently and we’re starting to find open spots on the floor instead of just swinging. We’re doing a better job of creating points. That’s what we needed. Our defense always has been solid. We just needed to find a

There are no big highs or lows with her. She’s been a huge help. Claudia and Tess both are taking a lot of swings. We’ve made some adjustments offen-

sively and they are paying off.” Katie Hendricks also has been a force of late in the middle. “Katie is finding her feet in the middle,” said D’Amore. “She had five kills against Aurora Central and had some key blocks at very critical times that took the momentum away from the other side.” In a 25-15, 25-23 win over St. Edward, Koch had 12 kills, two blocks and five digs. The scene: It’s 2015 and a regret-filled Napoleon is exploring the land now known as Iowa. Kayaking, stomping grapes, cycling and savoring local cuisine, Napoleon learns first-hand what he lost in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. As other travelers meet Napoleon they excitedly exclaim “This is Iowa!” A remorseful Napoleon replies with a “Yep.” “Our mission is to grow the state’s economy by attracting travelers who spend money at our attractions, lodging facilities, restaurants, stores and more,” said Shawna Lode, Iowa Tourism Office manager. “Just as Iowa offers unexpected destinations, Napoleon delivers our messaging in an unexpected way, cutting through the clutter and making more of an impact on potential travelers.” Nearly a dozen different Iowa locations are featured in the ads including wineries, iconic landmarks, parks and waterways and great restaurants. As prospective travelers are enticed by Napoleon’s hijinks at these locations, they will be directed to visit traveliowa.com to plan their own Iowa getaway. All of the ads can be viewed at traveliowa.com/thisisiowa.
