He grew up in Downey, Calif., about a mile from where the Apollo command modules that first took man to the moon were built. He studied tuba in Southern California and in recent years has re-

turned to that area annually, teaching, playing and lecturing at the Pokorny Seminar given at the University of Redlands. He assisted Rolling Stones’ trombonist, Michael Davis, in the production of his “Twenty Minute Warm-Up,” along with having solo and educational CDs of his own. He has received an Outstanding Alumnus Award and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Southern California and University of Redlands, respectively. Pokorny is a member of the Union Pacific (Railroad) Historical Society and spends time as a “foamer” (watching and chasing trains). He is a card-carrying member of The Three Stooges Fan Club (a “victim of soicumstances!”) and is an avid enthusiast of his good friend, David “Red” Lehr, “the greatest Dixieland sousaphonist in the known universe.” Immediately following the concert enjoy an all-you-can-eat pizza party in the Garden Room of the church, with pizza from DiLeo’s for $15 per person. Montini Catholic’s Volley for the Cure supports Young Survival Coalition It was a sea of pink, pink and more pink on and off the volleyball court on Tuesday evening, September 27 at Montini Catholic High School’s Annual Volley for the Cure event. Montini’s girls volleyball team members and their mothers sold baked goods before and during the game against Resurrection High School in Chicago. It was the Broncos who took home the victory (2-0). Under the leadership of the team members, and with the assistance of dedicated parents and friends, the school surpassed their amount raised last year by netting over $1,400 for

breast cancer research. This year the proceeds will be going to Young Survival Coalition (YSC) which sponsors educational programs designed to reach young women affected by breast cancer as well as members of the medical community, friends, family members, caregivers, the breast health community, healthy young women and the general public. “It was an amazing night,” said Coach Steve Dowjotas, who thanked everyone who helped, donated, baked and set up for the charitable evening. Forest Preserve Dist. urges caution when driving during deer breeding season

Deer-vehicle collisions most likely in autumn

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County urges drivers to slow down and stay alert to avoid deer-vehicle collisions this fall, when the animals’ breeding season increases the risk of accidents. “Deer are crossing roads and highways more frequently in search of mates between October and December, so deer and auto collisions increase dramatically,” said District ecologist Brian Kraskiewicz. According to State Farm Insurance, Illinois ranks 32nd in the nation for deer-vehicle accidents. A driver in the state has a 1-in-192 chance of having a collision, but there are ways to help lower the risk. • Reduce your speed and watch for deer on the edge of the road, especially at dawn and dusk. They’re common along woods, fields, fencerows and waterways, but you can encounter them almost anywhere. • If you see a deer cross safely in

Willowbrook football team qualifies for playoffs Addison Trail football team defeats Proviso East, keeps playoff hopes alive

The Willowbrook football team is headed back to the state playoffs. By virtue of the Warriors’ 31-7 West Suburban Conference Gold Division road win at Downers Grove South, the team earned its sixth victory and an automatic playoff berth. Willowbrook moved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in WSC Gold play. The Warriors now have won four games in a row. The Warriors last qualified for the

playoffs in 2013. It’s the third playoff berth in coach Nick Hildreth’s fifth season at the helm. Willowbrook now turns its attention to Friday’s home game against Leyden. If Willowbrook defeats Leyden it will share the conference title with the Eagles, who come to Villa Park unbeaten in conference play at 5-0. Addison Trail football The Addison Trail football team kept its playoff hopes alive thanks to

a 48-12 win against Proviso East at home. The win moved the Blazers to 4-4 overall and finished West Suburban Conference Gold Division play with a 3-3 record. Addison Trail can become playoff eligible in Week 9 if it defeats Glenbard West Saturday in Glen Ellyn. Game time is 1 p.m. Addison Trail led 21-0 after the first quarter and 41-0 at halftime. Quarterback Bobby Daniels was 5-for-6 for 135 yards and threw

three touchdown passes. Running back Nick D’Ambrose ran 13 times for 171 yards (13.2 yards per carry) and scored three rushing touchdowns. Addison Trail ran for 205 yards on 21 carries. Having a blast Junior Betty Ann Garrett is a female kicker on the successful Willowbrook football team CORRESPONDENT

Betty Ann Garrett has a strong soccer background. The Willowbrook junior plays club soccer with a program based out of Hinsdale. But there was one sport she’s always wanted to try. “I always wanted to play football,” she said. “Coming into freshman year that was my chance to try it out.”

Garrett ended up being the placekicker on the Willowbrook freshman B team. She was part of the Willowbrook sophomore team last year that went 8-1. Players from that team are now contributors to a 2016 Willowbrook team that has earned a state playoff berth with a 6-2 mark and has a chance to earn a share of the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title Friday at home against conference leader Leyden. Through seven weeks, Garrett had made six extra points in as many tries. She shares the varsity kicking duties with senior Mike Dembowski. Garrett said she’s kicked off a couple times as well. “Kicking gives you a really free feeling,” she said. “There are a lot of different ways you can interpret it. You can kick it a certain way and it goes a different way than anybody is expecting. I enjoy it.” Garrett said her demeanor helps her when lining up a kick. “I’m really mellow and don’t get nervous,” she said. “I process it through my head. ‘Here goes another extra point. I’m going to put it through the posts.’” Garrett said she’s prepared to make a tackle if necessary while on special teams. “It depends,” she said. “I will size the other team up. If someone is my size or smaller, I’ll tackle them, but if they are a little bigger, I’m not sure if I could do it, but in the end I know I can.” Garrett said she assisted on one tackle on a kickoff in a mid-season game. “As a freshman, I played up one game when the sophomore kicker was hurt and I assisted on another tackle against Downers Grove South,” she recalled. “You get a good rush of adrenaline, for sure.” Garrett said there’s no issue being a girl on the football team. “At our school, they enjoy it,” she said. “They feel like they have a mom on the team. Guys leave their water bottles around and I’ll fill them. Our team is cool about it. Sometimes it’s different with other teams. They will be like, ‘Oh my gosh, why are you here? This is a guy’s sport.’ I let that stuff go over my head and I ignore them. I’ve known a lot of the players on our team since middle school. They’ve been great.”

Addison community member Don “The Don of Sports” Figarelli visited Lincoln School on Wednesday, Oct. 12 for a visit with Mrs. Savaglio’s second grade class and Mrs. Bettini’s third grade class. Bringing along a box filled with books, brochures, and newspapers, Mr. Figarelli spoke to the students about the importance of reading and the wide variety of reading materials that are available to them. He also brought in a stovepipe hat and a sombrero—hats that tied in with books that he introduced. The students asked questions, shared their own stories, looked through the books and modeled the hats. In a 123-47 victory over Morton, AT-Willowbrook won the 200 medley relay in 2:05.26. That team included Anna Christiansen, Annalise Morrone, Grace Roucka and Klea Gjonaj. Elissa Haake won the 200 in 1:58.37, while Michelle Ramirez was second at 2:11.82. Madison Walsh took second in the 200 IM at 2:56.46. Jessica Berson was third at 2:56.84. The Blazers tied for third with 22 points and combined with their 23 dual-meet points ended up in fourth place overall in the conference. Pamela Kobeszko had one of three Addison Trail third-place finishes in the tournament. She went 2-1 at No. 2 singles and won the third-place match by a 6-1, 6-1 count. Addison Trail boys soccer team finishes regular season 19-1

The Addison Trail boys soccer team closed out the regular season on another tear. The Blazers upped their record to 19-1 overall and 5-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action after triumphs over Leyden (2-0), Neuqua Valley (2-0), Proviso West (5-2) and Hinsdale Central (21). Addison Trail finished second in

the conference behind Morton. Through the end of the regular season, Addison Trail had 14 players who scored at least one goal. And of those 14, a dozen had at least two goals and three players have at least 10 goals. Addison Trail scored 71 goals in the 20 regular-season games. “We have a lot of guys who can put the ball in the net,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “Our offense is very balanced and several players can contribute on any given day. I like how quickly we can create dangerous opportunities out of only two or three passes. We are a fast team and use our speed to our advantage.” On the assists front, 18 players

had at least one assist through the end of the regular season and five had at least five assists. Goalies Jacob Grygo and Jean Avila combined to allow 16 goals in the 20 regular-season games. Dini noted each played one half almost every game this season. Addison Trail had nine shutouts as a team heading into the playoffs. “Both keepers are juniors so they will be back next year,” he said. “Their goals-against-average is 0.80 a game. That is outstanding.” Addison Trail’s excellence on defense extends beyond its goaltending. “I think the numbers speak for themselves,” said Dini. “We have only let up 16 goals on the season.

Our defense is full of senior leadership and does a great job of marking other team’s best players. They want to shut out every team we play and take pride when we do so.” Individually, the Blazers have benefitted of late from the play of Uriel Martinez and Ruben Amaro. “Uriel is a senior who has come back from injury the past three games,” said Dini late last week. “He is coming into form for us and gives us another dangerous player to add to the mix. I am really happy for him. Ruben is a senior who can play any midfield position. He does a good job of doing whatever we ask of him and he makes our team better because of it. I am proud of how

much he has grown up over the past year.” If Addison Trail won its regional semifinal game earlier this week, it will play for a Class 3A regional title Friday at 6 p.m., at home. “I’m impressed with our ability to find a way every game to win,” said Dini. “We have been able to beat teams in so many ways this year, whether it’s with our speed, our corner-play execution, direct kicks or just on combination play. Our guys find a way to score. Our senior leadership and how close our team is also impresses me. It’s been an outstanding season and I credit our players for believing in our system and playing for one another.”

The Addison Trail boys crosscountry team has made late-season strides in preparation for the upcoming state series. The Blazers recently placed 20th at the St. Charles North invitational where senior Demetrio Cervantes clocked in at 17:41. “Demetrio is back and healthy,” said Addison Trail coach Brad Donaldson. “He had a strong race at St. Charles.” Donaldson noted Danny Bueno has been the team’s “most consistent and solid runner all year.” “He has been gradually improving each

week,” he added. Sophomore Ricardo Arreguin and junior Luis Vargas also have improved. “Ricardo has come on very strong the last half of the season,” said Donaldson. “Luis has had a very solid year as well. They are dropping more than a minute off their times.” Vargas was one of the team’s top two finishers in races at Leyden and St. Charles. “Luis had a very strong second cycle for us,” said Donaldson. “This is his first year in crosscountry and he has done a real nice job for us. Donaldson also has seen his younger runners take steps forward. “The younger runners still are learning how to ‘race,’” he said. “They are very comfortable running, but still are learning how to compete with other runners and adapt to the changing paces of a race.” The coach has been pleased with

his squad’s team-first attitude. “The group overall has been a great group of kids,” he said. “We have had a number of our top runners hurt so a lot of meets have not been as competitive as they could have been, but everyone has been willing to step up and do what they can to help the team out when asked.” Addison Trail will compete in a Class 3A regional Saturday. “We’re looking forward to the state series,” said Donaldson. “Our top runners should all be back and healthy, ready to race so we hope to make things interesting. Other newcomers include junior Melissa Krefft and senior Marie Baumgartner. “They are running consistently at the varsity level,” said Olson. “Both these young women have really contributed to the positive atmosphere of this year’s team.
