Busse Woods Dam Project expected to reduce flooding DUPAGE COUNTY — While it’s been a concept in the works for more than 30 years, the Busse Woods Dam project has finally started to move forward to improve flooding along Salt Creek. “This project is one that I’ve felt strong about for many years as it will help downstream communities like Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Addison, Villa Park, Wood Dale, and Itasca deal with storm water challenges which is a huge issue for the communities that I serve,” said Pete DiCianni, DuPage County Board member (Dist. 2). DiCianni also represented a part of District #1 as mayor of Elmhurst and was picked by DuPage County representatives to be the storm water hawk for all mayors in the County. “I’m so proud that we finally brought this project home and we did it with bipartisan cooperation,” he said. “With Cook and DuPage Counties [are] working together for a common cause -- protecting our homeowners and businesses from flooding.” This $2.7 million Dam Project will work in conjunction with the county’s two largest flood protection assets, the DuPage County Quarry located in Elmhurst and the Wood Dale/Itasca Reservoir. The dam will allow storm water to be held back in Elk Grove, which will allow Elmhurst and Wood Dale the ability to allow more

Patricia Wilki, nee Wagner, age 83, of Elmhurst, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2015. Patricia was the beloved wife of Donald for 59 years; the cherished mother of Carl (Jeannette) Wilki, Susan (David) Venchus, Thomas (Michelle) Wilki; loving grandmother of Carla (Kyle) Bell, Jason Wilki, Jacob (Kara) Venchus, Samuel Venchus, Rachael Venchus and Gabrielle Wilki; great-grandmother to Caiden Bell; and sweet aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Jr.; a great granddaughter, Kayla Bell; a sister, Eleanor Tracy; and a godson, James Tracy Jr. She was a longtime member and patron of Immaculate Conception Parish and a resident of Elmhurst. In addition to her role as homemaker and family caretaker, Patricia was active in various organizations throughout her life. She was a USO hostess, employee of the First National Bank of Chicago, American Legion Auxiliary member of Post 187, den mother in the Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts, room mother at Field School. She was active in the cardiac care group through Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. The American Heart Association honors Patricia as a Paul Dudley White Legacy Soci-

ety member and a Cor Vitae member for heart and stroke research. She was a resilient heart patient who cared deeply about the AHA’s mission. }Taxpayers should have access to the decisions made with their tax dollars.” — State Senator Tom Cullerton trustees. “State-funded universities and community college administrators should not be rewarded for breaking the rules.” Wise announced her resignation last week, the day before the University of Illinois disclosed that she had been using her personal email account to hide discussions of university business. “Taxpayers should have access to the decisions made with their tax dollars,” said Cullerton. “We need to find ways to stop these abuses and promote open and honest communication between our state’s community colleges and universities and the public.” The State Senator agrees this occurrence renews the urgency to pass meaningful reforms to end the misuse and abuse of taxpayer dollars. He believes in working towards making college affordable for students, not continuing to promote a culture of overpaid administrators. “Providing an affordable education to our students will contribute to increased economic opportunity, higher employment rates and stability for our families,” he said. “We need to pass meaningful reform to ensure working families aren’t sacrificing opportunities or their financial health to pay inflated administrative benefits and severance packages.”

ADDISON/VILLA PARK — On Aug. 5, District 88 administrators, department chairs, instructional coaches and coordinators met to plan for the 2015-16 school year. Topics included areas of focus/goals with regard to curriculum work and enhancements to the district’s staff evaluation process. In compliance with state and federal regulations, District 88 will continue to enhance our staff evaluation process through: Maintaining our goal of focusing on each child as an individual through piloting a student growth component Continuing to celebrate our diverse student population through maintaining an environment that welcomes and embraces cultural diversity Increasing collaboration among teachers to enhance instruction Those areas of focus will help us close the achievement gap and raise expectations for all students. Updates include: At Addison Trail, our inhouse maintenance staff renovated the foods lab on the second floor to make a Culinary Lab for a new Culinary Foods program. At Willowbrook, renovations and updates were made to the Culinary Lab as well.

*The district received two grants (Perkins and CETIG) to make those updates. The maintenance staff also did preventative work on our vast mechanical systems and partnered with the Technology Department on wiring the buildings for system upgrades. The custodial staff emptied classrooms and offices, cleaned the buildings from top to bottom and refinished every floor. New Teacher Orientation On Aug. 13, District 88 welcomed its newest staff

members, beginning with a breakfast including 20 community leaders from Addison, Villa Park and Lombard. Remembering Miss Daisy S

he wasn’t even my dog. Not even close. Even though she and I lived in the same house, she clearly answered to another master – my husband. Still, I loved her like you love a family dog that’s been around for more years than you have fingers. She loved playing fetch. She was a retriever, so I guess that makes sense. We could throw a ball or a stick (or whatever object she was fetching that day) for hours and she’d keep going until we made her quit. Her favorite place was the lake. She loved to swim. Combine that with retrieving and you had perfection – from her perspective, at least. Each summer, she’d find herself a good stick and it would be her “toy” to fetch from the lake during the long, hot days we spent there. My husband would throw it as far as he could and she’d joyfully (and I do mean joyfully) bound into the water – swimming once it got deep enough. She’d grab the stick in her mouth, swim back to shore and drop her toy at my husband’s feet. Then she’d give

whomever was nearby a doggy shake shower before turning toward the lake to fetch again. And again. And again. As long as we’d let her. I’m so glad we had the lake for her to love. She was a good dog (great dog) in most regards. She didn’t chew or jump on the furniture. She was awesome with kids and she patiently and gently put up with the cats (sometimes with a deep doggy sigh). She was pretty good about staying in the yard (unless a neighbor’s garbage was calling to her nose). If something was broken or someone got into the cat treats, she was pretty sure she was in trouble, even when it was clearly the cats’ fault. She was a trustworthy, loyal

companion. She never did learn to walk properly on a leash. She wouldn’t relent to it, always tugging and pulling to the point that we thought she might choke. I am sure she fully understood the “heel” command. She was a smart girl. She just refused to acknowledge it. It was one of the few instances of her asserting her independence. Another involved her phobias. She was a big dog – 85 pounds in her heyday – but the smallest details could put her in a tizzy. Certain floor coverings were taboo. She’d walk on wood, but not laminate. Vinyl was okay, but not her favorite. She refused to go down the stairs to the basement. The kitchen pantry terrified her. It happened to be where we kept her food so that sort of benefitted us. One time we got her a fancy new water dish. She wouldn’t drink out of it because it scared her. She went out the back door to do her business, but would only access it from the right side of the door frame. She wouldn’t

go out the door leading to the garage. The garage itself, however, was fine. We quit trying to figure her out years ago and just loved her for what she was – quirks and all – because every family has its quirks. Her three favorite times of the day were breakfast, lunch and dinner. Her favorite food was scrambled eggs. When my husband entered the kitchen, she figured she had a chance of eating and she’d give him a stare down, darting her eyes between him and her food dish. We called this look “the eyeball.” After lunch she got a treat and wouldn’t let up until you gave her one. The peanut butter flavor gave her the toots so we quit buying those. The hardest part about having a dog is that they grow old to soon. She was old and this has been coming for some time. We’ve known she was nearing the end and I thought I was prepared. We talked about

her ailments and the fact that she might be suffering. She was less active and seemed sad sometimes. She hesitated before going upstairs because it took effort for her to climb them. She quit jumping up in the morning in anticipation of breakfast and instead would stay sleeping under the bed. This summer, she didn’t really fetch the stick, but carried it in her mouth while wading in the lake. Doing the normal things was getting harder. We all saw that. And we knew. And I thought I was ready. But you’re never ready. Not really. I’m not sure it’s possible. Still, I didn’t realize how much I wasn’t ready – to wake up without her under the bed. To never throw the stick for her again, or get the eyeball or make her eggs. She wasn’t even my dog. But she was our dog. And she was a part of our family – an important part. I’m going to miss her. Sure am. Already do.

The Don of A New Day in Sports Hey! Hey! - The Cubs are Back! At this writing the Cubs are 18 games over 500 with a 9 game winning streak recently snapped. These winning days got DON FIGARELLI me thinking back to Cubs winning ways in the ‘90s. One specific memory was when I interviewed the legendary announcer Jack Brickhouse back in 1991. Jack, a Peoria native, was born on the same day as I back in 1916, that of January 24th (I was born in 1934.) Jack was known for his play-by-play coverage of Chicago Cubs games on WGN-TV from 1948 to 1981 and during those times the Cubs were not exceptional. But, Jack made them feel great. The interview I had with Jack

was conducted at The Odeum in Villa Park in 1991 at an event called Sports Fest and he was terrific. I remember what he said about the Cubs organization and how he loved the atmosphere of Wrigley Field and the organization.

When I met Jack, I said, “Jack, I feel that I know you on a personal level,” he thought that was great and thanked me sincerely. Golf outing to support youth traveling to Sister City

ADDISON — On Aug. 26, the Village of Addison Sister Cities will host a Golf Adventure at Links & Tees Golf Facility in Addison. The event is a fundraiser for the village’s Sister Cities program with Triggiano, Italy. Through that studentexchange program, Addison hosts students from Triggiano, and Addison Trail students travel to Italy. Proceeds from the golf outing will go toward scholarships for students who want to participate in the Sister Cities program. The Village of Addison Sister Cities Committee continues to raise funds on behalf of Addison Trail students to provide scholarships for them to travel to Italy. The boys golf program at Willowbrook hit a recent high-water mark. Warriors coach Gary Walker noted 34 golfers registered for tryouts this season. “It’s definitely the highest number I’ve seen in the last seven years,” the coach said. Walker attributes the uptick in interest in the Willowbrook program to the work being done with the summer youth golf program run by Sugar Creek Golf Course in Villa Park. “It’s 100 percent the summer program at Sugar Creek,” said Walker. “The head pro over there, Cory Ferrell, runs a great summer program and our kids have been a part of that. They sell

(Assistant) coach (Scott) Forcash and I are extremely pleased right now. If this continues, the future of this program is going to be extremely bright.” Walker noted the Warriors also will be bolstered by the return of eight seniors from last year’s team, including the likes of Max Sarovich, Matt Lagner and Nick Tiberi. Junior Jake Neiswanger is back in the program. He played his freshman year at Willowbrook before transfer-

ring to another school. “I think we are going to make some huge improvements throughout the year,” said Walker. “We have great athletes and great kids in general here. They are very coachable.” Sophomore Tim Keefe also is slated to play with the varsity squad this season. “We have some promising players,” said Walker. “It’s going to be a monthand-a-half sprint of improvement with these guys.” Walker noted he’s scheduled plenty of competitive invitationals for the team. “We have nine or 10 invites on

the schedule and we’ve even doubled up on two dates so everybody can compete,” said Walker. “We’ll also have eight or nine duals with our conference and then non-conference duals against Ridgewood and West Chicago. You have to load up your schedule with as many invites as you can so the kids can get that experience.” Willowbrook will host its annual Hamann varsity scramble at Sugar Creek and also will host a frosh-soph stroke play invitational at Sugar Creek. Walker added the program’s upward trajectory wouldn’t be possible without support from the school and District 88. “Once again I cannot believe the support we get from the administration at Willowbrook and from the district office,” he said. “It’s insane the amount of support we receive here. It’s the best I’ve ever seen. I am extremely grateful.”

Optimism abounds for Addison Trail girls volleyball team Blazers show improvement as fall practices open By Mike Miazga Correspondent

Addison Trail girls volleyball coach Dan Styler is looking for his team to take the next step forward this season. And thus far he likes what he’s seen. “We are off to a strong start,” said Styler. “We bring back a solid core group of players from last year. We are at a different starting point from last year. A lot of the norms and

expectations they understand well from the end of last year. We’re able to move at a quicker pace during drills.” Styler also likes the way his team has come together over the summer and during the opening of fall practices, which started last week. “I’m impressed by our team chemistry,” he said. “They all work very hard and are excited to be here. The girls are unified and that’s very refreshing to see as we kick off the season.” Addison Trail held its summer camp as usual and also participated in a summer league at Great Lakes Center in Aurora. “It was a positive summer

session,” said Styler. “The enrollment was strong from our youth program through the varsity team. I’ve seen a clear growth from last summer. The skill development and the performance in summer league was much better. We are at a much better starting point due to our success this summer.” Styler liked the fact his players were able to see some strong competition in the summer league. “There was a great variety of teams and class levels there,” said Styler. “We had a very good showing. Our placement was higher than it was last summer. The execution on our side of the net was bet-

ter. We showed improvement and that’s more important than wins and losses in the summer. We focused on our side of the net and showed areas of growth.” Addison Trail ended up placing in the Silver Division at Great Lakes. “That’s the highest we’ve placed,” said Styler. “That’s a definite sign of growth from previous years.” Styler said the team also has been bolstered by the senior leadership of Jessica Mell (middle blocker), Nicole Pudlo (middle blocker) and Carla Muell (defensive specialist). “Those three core players have been fantastic for us,” said Styler.

The coach also is looking for big things from the likes of junior outside hitter Sarah Petrbok and junior setter Anastasia Labadessa, as well as junior outside hitter-right-side hitter Keara Schmidt. “Things are looking good,” said Styler. “The girls in the gym recognize that the season is long. But they also see we are at a different performance level compared to last year. Combine that with the great team chemistry we have and we have higher expectations of our performance this season.” Addison Trail opens the season this coming Tuesday at home against Lake Park.

There will be no walks in the park this season for the IC Catholic Prep football team. The Knights will face seven teams on their 2015 schedule that sported winning records

last season — with six of those squads earning playoff bids. IC again will kick off the season against Kankakee Bishop McNamara. This year’s game will take place Friday, Aug. 28 in Kankakee at 7:30 p.m. McNamara, which beat IC in Elmhurst last season, finished 6-4 a year ago. The Knights kick off the home portion of their schedule on Saturday Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. against Evergreen Park, a team that also went 6-4 and qualified for the playoffs in 2014. The Knights then will host

Walther Christian on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. Walther went 0-9 last year and lost 35-0 to IC in the 2014 meeting. IC hits the road in Week 4 to face St. Edward in Elgin on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:15 p.m. St. Edward won the Metro Suburban Conference East Division title last year and finished 10-1 overall. The Knights return home on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7:15 p.m. for the first official home game at Lewis Stadium played with permanent lights. IC

SPRINGFIELD — In a growingly rare moment of bipartisan peace, the Illinois Senate on Tuesday cleared the way for state agencies to spend about $4.8 billion in federal money otherwise being held up by the lack of an agreement on a state budget. By a vote of 57-0, the Senate passed an appropriations bill to allow the federal “pass-through” dollars to be spent. The measure now moves to the House. Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office supports the bill, a spokeswoman said. “This takes care of many of those issues that are challenging social service agencies and our residents throughout Illinois,” said Sen. Heather Steans, D-Chicago, who presented the measure, Senate Bill 2042. No senators spoke in opposition. Some examples of the spending supported by federal tax dollars include: About $330 million for the Low Income Heating and Energy Assistance program, by way of

the state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. About $275 million for job training, also through DCEO. About $260 million for community block grants through DCEO. More than $320 million for the Women, Infants and Children nutrition program via the Illinois Department of Human services. About $175 million for rehabilitation services, also through DHS. More than $300 million for family and community services through DHS. More than $300 million for health programs administered by the Illinois Department of Public Health. More than a month into the new fiscal year, Illinois still lacks a budget as Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and legislative Democrats remain in a philosophical and political impasse. Rauner has repeatedly said the state needs change in five areas: workers compensation stan-

dards, lawsuit reform, a property tax freeze, term limits for elected officials, and independent legislative redistricting. The GOP also says the Democrats’ $36 billion spending plan, about $3 billion to $4 billion short on revenue, proves Democrats want to raise taxes. Democrats say what Rauner calls reforms amount to a “corporate” agenda that would lower wages and standards of living for the middle class, remove protections for workers and diminish workers’ rights to collectively bargain. The Senate did not, as previously expected, take up a measure to halt a 2 percent cost-ofliving increase for state lawmakers, nor did it act to override a gubernatorial veto of a bill that would enable mandatory arbitration if the either the state or its employee unions declare an impasse in their continuing contract talks. Senators, however, are scheduled to return to the floor Wednesday afternoon.

Feeling good does not have to be torture (or include green smoothies) T oday as I type marks Day Eight of my 30-day healthy eating adventure. Good golly miss molly, it’s working! For the past seven days, no sugar, no alcohol, no dairy, no gluten, no some other things I can’t recall right now. On one hand, it seems strict and limited. In reality, there is plenty we can eat.

My Prince Charming and I both want to drop some belly wiggle and overall just feel good. My energy level throughout the day no longer has the dips and I have flourished the first week without feeling hungry or deprived at all. For me to go a week with-

out a cookie is something. I feel incredibly proud and it has not been hard. I’ve noticed how often I automatically take a break from my computer and wander into the kitchen. When I notice now how often I open the cupboard door out of reflex, it is shocking that I do not weigh 300 pounds. It’s not hunger that had me opening the junk, it was habit. Type an hour, eat a cookie. Type an hour, eat a cookie. Breaking that habit alone is worth this 30-day adventure. We’re not big drinkers but I love a good glass of wine or a fruity cocktail occasionally, and that too has been easy to forego. We have attended several social functions and our polite decline of booze or cake was met with mixed response. Some folks were enthusiastically supportive, offering water, nuts and berries to snack on. Some folks were enthusiastically mocking, offering rolling of the eyes and “why would anyone in their right

mind ever want to do that?!” Note that these folks were the overweight and not so healthy tribe. At first I found myself trying to justify to them why we doing it. Then I realized it was

nobody’s business but mine. I could launch into an explanation that I want to lose my belly jiggle and dissipate the hot flashes, or I could just say that it feels really amazingly good. End of story.

We do feel really good. At the end of Week One, both my husband and I have dropped about five pounds and bellies seem to be getting smaller. Flushing the body of all the processed stuff is the key I think.
