oung kids lie on their back for hours looking at the dragons, turtles and trees they see in cloud formations. As adults, we often lose our appreciation for staring at the sky. Artist David Wallace Haskins aims to reignite our love of the sky with his new installation – Skycube - at the Elmhurst Art Museum. Skycube, installed on the museum’s outdoor patio, is a 6,000-pound construction of steel, glass and far infrared light film. The 8’x8’x8’ creation shows the moving image of the actual sky above at eye level through a pictorial plane. “You feel like the sky is coming down to greet you, like it’s a mythological entity,” David said. “A big part of the work is to invite the viewer to reconnect with the sense of wonder of the sky and see the sky with new eyes. You enter into the experience in four dimensions: the three dimensions of the cube and the fourth dimension of time since the experience is constantly changing as the clouds move.” David grew up a block away from the art museum and his childhood best friend lived at the current site of the art museum before the museum was built. “This exact spot was my playground,” he recalled. “I’d lie on my back and look up at the clouds. And walking to and from Hawthorne (Elementary School) I would see rain puddles reflecting the sky. It seemed otherworldly to see the sky out of context like that and I started connecting the sky with art.” Surrealist artist Rene Magritte became one of David’s primary influences even in those early years. “A picture lady at Hawthorne brought in a Magritte print called Time Transfixed and then another one called On The Threshold of Liberty, both of which are at the Art Institute of Chicago,” he said. “I remember just loving those and thinking how beautifully Magritte

decontextualized and put the sky in his work because of the sky’s mystery.” While he was at Sandburg Middle School, David worked with art teacher Mrs. Goodwin. “She encouraged my abstract ideas and introduced me to Georgia O’Keefe and the idea of color fields, which became a big influence on my art.” Then at York, where he graduated in 1994, David studied under John Nester, who now teaches at the Elmhurst Art Museum and Elmhurst College. “He took me under his wing in the art department and I learned a lot about the process of trial and error.” During a Magritte show at the Art Institute, David met the head of adult education, who later came to visit David’s creation Skywall, a predecessor to Skycube. Their shared appreciation for Magritte led to a friendship and introductions that ultimately connected David to Elmhurst Art Museum curator Stacy Boris. The two started discussing exhibiting David’s work locally. “I had started Skycube already so it was a mutually beneficial relationship,” he said. It’s very exciting to come back to my hometown after living on both coasts and in the city.” So after five years of conceiving and developing Skycube, the piece was installed in August. “It was delivered by a huge crane, towering over the trees,” said David. “I dug four feet down from each of the legs and poured concrete to support the weight of 6,000 pounds. Then we planted trees around the patio to play off Magritte’s use of trees and the sky.” Visiting Skycube is included with museum admission. Luisa Castellanos, the museum’s Visitor Services Manager, had this to say: “The (Skycube) opening was packed with people enjoying music and food on the patio. We are working the piece into our class activities and are finding that we are getting new members. You sit for a while and look (at Skycube) and it gets hypnotic. It has caught a lot of people’s attention and it’s an honor to have it here at the Elmhurst Art Museum.”

Roosevelt Road at around 9:13 p.m. The 18-year-old was charged with two counts of domestic battery and a viola-

Addison Trail hosts annual Open House ADDISON — On Sept. 3, more Addison Trail students and parents/guardians attended the school’s annual Open House. Participants were able to tour the building; meet administrators and staff members; and learn about Addison Trail’s curriculum and clubs/activities. Addison Trail also invited local Realtors and potential homeowners to the Open House, so they could see the school firsthand and speak with parents/guardians, students, staff and administrators about Addison Trail and District 88.

Donations of suits, ties, dress shirts and dress shoes for young men are requested. If you have items to give to the Blazer Boutique or The Blazer, drop them off between 7:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. during the week at Addison Trail, 213 N. Lombard Road in Addison (at door No. 1). Items are needed by Sept. 18 for Homecoming. Items will be accepted after that date for future dances and events.

Addison Trail boys cross country coach Brad Donaldson noted last year’s underclass team enjoyed success at that level. Now, some of those runners have advanced to the varsity squad and Donaldson is hoping that success can be used to help with the transition to the next level this fall. “We are very young,” he said. “The heart of the team will be juniors and sophomores. They had a great season as underclassmen last year but need to rise up to varsity-level competition this year.” Back for the Blazers are Demetrio Cervantes and Julio Cervantes. Demetrio Cervantes, the school recordholder for boys cross country, was a sectional qualifier last year as a sophomore. Newcomers to the team include sophomores Nate Czorniak, Danny Bueno and

David Reyes. “We’re working on understanding the team racing concept and pack running,” said Donaldson. “We really hope to build on their successful season as a froshsoph team and hope that will help instill a spirit of competition that will challenge them to push themselves every day.” Addison Trail girls volleyball The Addison Trail girls volleyball team scored a recent three-set non-conference win over Elgin. There is a little added emphasis in the word “team” this year for the Willowbrook boys cross country team. “There is a strong sense of team this year,” said Willowbrook coach TJ Artman. “They do everything together. We’re missing the individual front-runner that I’ve always seemed to have, but we have a great pack that is very close together, which is something I haven’t had like this year’s pack. We have a group of 10 guys who literally are training right with each other in every workout. It lends itself to a great team effect and efforts. They truly are working for themselves and the guy right next to them.” Willowbrook, which finished fourth in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division last year, returns seniors Marco Martinez, Chris Turek and David Chernov, junior Casey King and sophomore Mike Isaacson. Senior Henry Dahl is a key newcomer to the team. “It’s early in the season, but our focus is the last four races of the season,” said Artman. “Everything else is in preparation for those big races.” Artman is looking for his veteran runners to take on key leadership roles. “I expect the older, experienced racers to be responsible leaders on and off the course and do their jobs. If they do that we will accomplish our team goals,” he said. “I’m looking forward to watching the younger, inexperienced varsity racers develop into great racers.” Artman said teams to keep an eye on in the

WSC Gold are Morton and Downers Grove South. “We want to go after the WSC championship title,” he said. “The consistent champions are Morton and Downers Grove South, but we’re always looking to upset that reign,” he said. Willowbrook opened the conference season by defeating Proviso East. “We ran OK and won, but we will need to be faster as the season progresses,” said Artman. Willowbrook girls cross country The Willowbrook girls cross-country team returns the likes of seniors Shannon Jones, Diana Marin, Kimberly Leon-Cervantes and Diana Mendoza, along with junior Grace Guthrie. Newcomers to the team include sophomores Angela Klingelhoffer, Briana Jones, Evelyn Yao, Catherine Peler and freshman Victoria Palma. “The team has been doing a great job of running together as a pack and encouraging each other to stay strong,” Willowbrook coach Christine Hasler said. “Our captains, Shannon Jones and Diana Marin, have done an excellent job motivating the team and continuing to work hard.” Hasler said team work will be a key for the Warriors. “Every runner has a purpose in the race,” she said. “We continue to focus on team running and using each other to build confidence and stay focused on our goals.” Hasler said Downers Grove South is the team to keep an eye on. “Downers Grove South has been the frontrunner and we hope to continue to challenge the competition for one of the top spots in the conference. We always want to be a top contender in the conference and then see how far we can go into the postseason.” Willowbrook recently opened the conference season with wins at all levels against Proviso East. In the varsity race, Palma was the winner. Marin took second. Leon-Cervantes was third, while Guthrie was fourth and Klingelhoffer was fifth.

Willowbrook boys golf team competes at Oswego Scramble Warriors girls golf team improving By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Willowbrook boys golf team recently participated in the 18-team Oswego Scramble invitational at par-72 Blackberry Oaks in Bristol. Willowbrook placed 10th in the event with a 63. This was a five-player scramble. The winning round was a 58. The Warriors shot a 29 on the front and a 34 on the back. Senior Nick Tiberi was named the team MVP for the event. Also playing were junior Jake Neiswanger, sophomore Tim Keefe, senior Pete Dziak and junior Sam Malito. Willowbrook also dropped a 156-164 West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest to Hinsdale South at Sugar Creek. The loss put Willowbrook at 2-2 on the season. Tiberi tied for meet medalist honors with a 38. Senior Max Sarovich added a 41. Keefe shot 42 and Neiswanger shot a 43. Willowbrook girls golf While the win-loss ledger might not show it, the Willowbrook girls golf team is making progress. “We have a young and inexperienced team and we struggle sometimes,” said Willowbrook coach Jim White. “This group is constantly improving and gaining more confidence. It’s tough to play against the conference teams that excel as well as perform at the state level each year.” Willowbrook dropped recent conference matches to Addison Trail, Hinsdale South and Glenbard West. “I am proud of our team because it continues to show pride and dignity for the school as well as for the game,” said White. “There are no excuses, but a willingness to become better at some part of their game. They are a team and conduct themselves in such a manner.” Sophomore Sophia Parrillo continues to make strides on the course. “Sophia is making gains on her personal-best score each match,” said White. “I believe the one thing that brings them all back is the ‘one’ shot, whether it’s a chip-in from 30 yards or a solid drive or making a long putt. That’s the game of golf.”

Fenton golfers fourth at Leyden invitational By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Fenton boys golf team recently finished fourth at the eight-team Leyden invitational. Sophomore Andrew Hill logged a Top 10 finish at Leyden. The Bison also dropped a Metro Suburban Conference crossover dual meet to Chicago Christian. Coach Rick Johnson’s squad features only one senior in girls golfer Kayla Kaspari and two juniors (Brendon Tomczak and Jeremy Ames). “We are very young,” said Johnson. “The rest of the team is sophomores and freshmen.” Johnson has seen a number of bright spots in the early going. “Andrew Hill is working hard,” said Johnson. “He played varsity last year and will be our No. 1 or No. 2 golfer this year. Brendon Tomczak is stepping up and has shown some real growth since last year. Freshmen Marcus Astorga and Nik Fischer have a great deal of potential. I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do this year and next. We have a great group of freshmen—lots of good athletes who haven’t played a ton of golf, including Marco Faraone and Colin Norris.” Fenton girls cross country The Fenton girls’ cross-country team returns numerous runners from last year’s team that

won a Class 2A regional team title. Back is sophomore Jessica McCauley, who qualified for the state meet as an individual. Also back are senior Rebecca Garcia and sophomores Charity Bullis and Marisol Garcia. All four runners were part of the regional championship team from last year. Key newcomers to the team include junior Katherine Dominguez, sophomore Giselle Vargas and freshman Alyssa Silva. “We have young returning runners who are motivated, lots of newcomers with potential and strong leadership,” said Fenton coach Sarah McDougal. McDougal noted a key for this season will be tightening the pack. “We would like to strengthen our 4, 5, 6 and 7 positions on the team to close the gap between them and our 1, 2 and 3 runners.” McDougal is looking for more big performances from Bullis and McCauley. “They had strong freshmen seasons at the varsity level and they both trained hard all summer.” McDougal would like to see the team build off its postseason success from a year ago. “We’d like to continue to have a presence at the IHSA regional and sectional level as well as our eventual goal of qualifying for the state meet as a team,” she said.

Fenton girls swimming team features experience State qualifier Feddersen among returnees By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Fenton girls swimming team has experience on its side. Coach Caroline Dukich returns a number of experienced swimmers, including the likes of two-time state qualifier Cassidy Feddersen. The junior, who qualified for state in each of her first two years, swims the 100 butterfly and also competes in diving. Also back is junior Kanah Hori, who swims the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. “Many of our swimmers and divers have returned this season,” said Dukich. “We did lose a number of gifted athletes this year due to graduation, but we have newcomers who show promise for this season.”

Dukich added both Feddersen and Hori have high hopes for the 2015 season. “Kanah is looking to drop times in the 50, 100 and breaststroke and Cassidy is once again looking to make state for diving,” she said. Other contributors include Emma Butts in diving, Maddie Subach and Agnes Gasior who both will be specializing as distance swimmers and Izza Jablonska, who specializes in the breaststroke. Lexi Petrella and Jasmin Kon are Fenton’s butterfly experts, while Justine Petrow will help in the freestyle events. Dukich’s goals for the season are multifold. “We are going to continue to work on skill building, improving personal best times and simply enjoying the sport,” she said. “We are looking to accomplish improvement from all our swimmers.”
