Finding the ray of light in a dark world

I

By

KELLY SIMMONS Columnist

This dark and fallen world?! Really? If that is how you see it, that is what you get. How about seeing a world that is full of wonderful people like the waitress who showed love? How about the countless examples like that that are out there? The mom did close her article by saying, “When we receive little bits of light from people like you, it gives us hope for what the future holds. Thank you for the joy you gave us.” How different this essay would have felt to me if the mom would have omitted the words “dark and fallen.” All parents try to teach their kids skills for surviving and thriving in this crazy world. In this sometimes difficult world. In this take-it-oneday-at-a-time world. Our words matter. A dark and fallen world is a pretty harsh conviction. It is my wish that this family is surrounded by people like the waitress who showed love. Let them see little bits of light every day. Let them see hope. That is what we call can be for each other. Little bits of light. Little bits of hope. What kind of world is it? It is always up to you. Kelly Epperson Simmons can be reached at PO Box 2324, Loves Park, IL 61131 and info@kellyepperson. com.

just read a wonderful article posted on someone’s Facebook page from the news outlet called themighty.com and it was a thankful, uplifting story. Until it wasn’t. As I read, I felt the mom’s gratitude and was awash in the power of love and human spirit, and was thinking I would share this article. But one sentence stopped me from doing so. This mother was writing a thank you message to the waitress who took good care of them and their 9-yearold autistic son. He needs his hot dog to have the mustard in a squiggly line and he wants a salad and he wants a cherry. This waitress was kind and took it all in stride and made this family’s night by taking care of them with grace and love. The mother writer continued on that her son had left his favorite toy at the restaurant. For any child, this can create meltdowns. Any parent knows that. For her son, he completely shut down. By the time this family finished their meeting and returned to the restaurant, several hours had passed. The thoughtful waitress had found the toy and all the servers had taken turns giving it rides in their pockets and sharing experiences. She had a hunch they would be back for it. The wonderful waitress once again had taken care of this family. And this family was deeply grateful. It was a lovely piece and well-written, and if it would have stopped there with the expression of love and gratitude, I would have shared it. But the mother writer went on to say: “We’re spending his childhood trying to prepare him and teach him coping skills for surviving and thriving in this dark and fallen world.”
