Advice from an older wiser woman: Relax, enjoy, repeat
W
hen I started writing this weekly column in May 2001, my sons were in grade school. It seemed my days would always be shuttling kids, spelling words, and packing backpacks. Older women advised me that the days may seem long but the years would fly by. They were right. Back then, 15 years ago, I could not imagine where life would take me. I am grateful for it all. Life is a really good ride! The time has indeed gone by in a blink. As for my elementary age sons, my firstborn just graduated college and is working locally. My second born graduates college in June and will probably end up in Chicagoland too. And today I went to a kindergarten play for my granddaughter. Ah, the circle of life. When I married my prince five years ago (May 1, 2011; Happy Anniversary to us!), his elder son was married and they had a baby girl. I loved becoming an instant Nana. It is a joy to watch how fast she has grown and how spectacular she did in

her play today. All three grandmas were there along with her parents to smile, wave, and take photos and videos. Now I am among the older women telling my daughter-inlaw to cherish it all (she does) because time truly does whiz on by. This is my note to all mommies across the land from an older wiser woman: Relax. Enjoy. Don’t put so much pressure on your kids and don’t put so much pressure on yourself. It is all just fine and will continue to be just fine. Love your babies. Let them be themselves. Don’t label. If your daughter is quiet, so be it. Don’t say “She’s so shy” all the time. If your son is rowdy, don’t announce that he is “all
boy all the time.” Let them be. Let them express in their own way in their own time. Don’t try to make them fit in. Love and accept and encourage and love some more. Apply that to yourself. Love yourself as is. Accept yourself as is. Encourage yourself and love some more. Love the other mommies just as they are. Don’t compete and don’t compare. Your kids are amazing and so are theirs. They are amazing and so are you. Their treats and parties and wardrobe choice are super. No matter how over the top or how minimal. Your job is to be a role model. Talk nicely of yourself and others. Act accordingly. Don’t anguish over decisions. Relax. Enjoy. (Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.) Your little darlings will be just fine. Always do what you know in your heart of hearts to be right. Peer pressure never goes away. You simply have to learn to trust yourself. You and they are just fine; always. Moms everywhere are prone

to worry. I have worked with moms of newborns who feel the pressure from the very beginning to do the “right” thing by making their own baby food and teaching the baby French. Moms of preschoolers on up get wrapped up in being a “good mom.” It never goes away. I know moms who fret over what to wear to college graduation because it is a parade of best dressed mothers. Stop the madness. Don’t even let it start. Love your babies. Love them as is. Support their desires and interests. Listen to them. Respect them. Laugh with them. Relax. Enjoy. It goes by in a blink. Before you know it, you will be the older wiser woman telling the mommies to relax and enjoy. Ah, the circle of life. Kelly Epperson Simmons celebrates 15 years of writing her column and thanks her editors, publishers, and YOU, the readers. Write Kelly@kellyepperson.com or PO Box 2324, Loves Park, IL 61131.

Old, young or none of the above?
F
or most of my life I viewed myself as old. Even when I clearly wasn’t. It’s about perspective. The memories are vague, or even nonexistent, but when I was 2 I got a baby sister. By age 3, I’m pretty sure I thought I was old. For sure much older than my sister, which I held over her head – until I hit 30. When I was 5 and someone asked my age I no longer had to fold any of my fingers in toward my palm. I got to hold up my entire outstretched hand. I remember feeling like this was a big deal (because it was!). Plus I went to kindergarten. That most certainly qualified me as old. When I was 8 I was finally allowed to ride my pink banana seat bike by myself to the corner store to buy Laffy Taffy. That sort of responsibility and independence is reserved for those who have attained a certain level of experience and sophistication in life. Hence, in my eyes, I was old. When I was 10 I reached a new level of oldity: double digits and double hands. Having two numbers in my age was exciting and practically screamed maturity, as well as the privilege of having my mom drive me to the mall so I could get my ears pierced. The age of 16 is a milestone in nearly everyone’s oldometer. The importance of 16 candles on the cake can be summed up in two words: driver’s license. I no longer needed a parent to drive me to the mall; I could get there on my own. Anyone old enough to drive a car is old – at least old enough to drive a car. Everyone believes they are old at 18. And why not? You can do lots of grown-up things, not the least of which is refer to yourself as an adult. It’s a privilege you’ve been waiting for your entire life. At 20 you are no longer a teenager and that has old written all over it. Looking back, of course, I was probably more kid than grown up, but I didn’t know it at the time because I considered 20 old. The same goes for 25. And (eek) 30, which was a biggie for many of us. Most of it is a blur after that. The older you get, the faster time flies. I remember my parents telling me this; I didn’t believe them. Now that I’ve become them I understand the truth of their words. Somewhere around mid-30something I found designating myself as old wasn’t as alluring as it had been when I was 8. Instead of the sweetness and privilege of Laffy Taffy, extra years meant responsibility. The prestige of a mini van. Replacing acne wash with wrinkle cream. Fighting the dreaded muffin top.

CLOSING ILLINOIS’ NUCLEAR FACILITIES WOULD BE
MORE THAN JUST A BAD SIGN.
According to a State of Illinois report, if two at-risk plants close early, it will mean: 4,275 jobs lost
Increased carbon emissions
Up to $1.2 billion in lost economic activity each year
Risk of more and longer blackouts
Illinois has the opportunity to pass the Next Generation Energy Plan by May 31
to save our state’s nuclear facilities. Learn more: NuclearPowersIllinois.com @NuclearPowersIL Source: State of Illinois HR 1146 Report; PJM analysis PAID FOR BY EXELON SHAREHOLDERS

TOOTH-TALK IS BACK ROCKTON DENTAL CARE Rockton Dental Care 213 W. MAIN ST. ROCKTON, IL 61072 815-624-2626 rocktondental.com Dr. Ken O’Brien
FOR THE RECORD TEN HABITS THAT ARE BAD FOR YOUR TEETH! — Part 2 of 2 — We all know (hopefully) that opening a bottle of Budweiser with your teeth is not a good idea! But there are ten other things you may be doing that can cause a little or a lot of damage to your pearly whites!
6. Utilizing the teeth as a human tool box. It may be tempting to tear off a clothing tag, rip open a bag of chips, hold a nail or many other handy things around the house with your chompers. Don’t! There are proper tools for all of those jobs, and they are not found in your mouth. 7. Put the pencil down. It’s easy to use your teeth as a pencil holder, eyeglass rest, or pen parking spot. But doing so habitually can cause your teeth to shift until there is an actual space in there for these objects - a space you probably don’t want! 8. Nail biting. While a tense movie or a close sporting event is often called a “nail-biter,” most people who bite their nails do it constantly. This can lead to small spaces between the teeth and shave off bits of enamel. 9. Drinking soda - even “diet.” We won’t go into the HUGE list of reasons not to drink soda right now, but even diet soda bathes your teeth in unhealthy acid and causes erosion. When you are thirsty there is a reason your body craves water. Listen to it. Hydrate with water. 10. Careful with that toothpick! While properly using a toothpick can be healthy for your teeth and gums, doing it with too much force or aggression can hurt your gum tissue. So just like with brushing, take it easy! Any questions? at Rockton Dental Care your health and comfort come first! Feel free to give us a call at 815-624-2626 to schedule an appointment or to discuss any dental health matters.
