Swedish American to host 6th Annual SAM’s Safety Fair, May 21

ROCKFORD — The sixth annual SAM’s Safety Fair will be held on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the grounds of SwedishAmerican Hospital (east side of the Hospital campus in front of Camelot Tower). Kids, along with their parents, will be able to visit 40 organizations’ booths during the event, which is being held in conjunction with Emergency Medical Services Week. Named after SwedishAmerican’s mascot, SAM (SwedishAmerican Mascot), kids will be able to meet local firefighters and police officers; explore the inside of an ambulance and fire truck; learn about boat safety; bicycle safety; burn prevention; pet safety; poison prevention; water and sun safety; injury prevention and more. They also can participate in the bicycle safety rodeo and receive a free helmet (while supplies last). From there, they can visit the SwedishAmerican Caring Canines and animals from the Winnebago County Animal Shelter. In addition, there will be a rock climbing wall, Velcro sticky wall and a bungee run. Kids can meet SAM, our SwedishAmerican mascot, Hammy from the Rockford IceHogs, mascots from Magic Waters and the YMCA, and the interactive Sparky the fire truck and Andy the ambulance. “SwedishAmerican SAM’s Safety Fair provides a place for families to learn about safety and healthy habits, says SwedishAmerican Hospital Safe Kids Coordinator Penny Lentz. “This event is fun for the whole family and it’s a great place for parents and caregivers to understand what safety resources are available in our community. The event is free and open to the public. Giveaways will be provided and food and beverages from Jersey Mike’s will be available for purchase.
