In December of 2015, the Elmhurst Independent brought its readers a story about a ten-year-old young man named Ben Hoffman who set up his own chocolate stand in his Elmhurst driveway to raise money to help fight children’s cancer. Last year’s event raised more than $12,000 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Ben, who is now 11, knows firsthand about the work done at Lurie Hospital because he was a patient himself when he was much younger. At just five months, Ben was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer and received most of his treatment at Lurie. Long story short, he has been cancer-free since May 2009. He opened his chocolate stand as a way to give back to the hospital that treated him so well. This year Ben’s Chocolate Stand was held for the third year in a row in the Hoffman’s driveway on Saturday, Nov. 19 and the numbers are showing another successful endeavor. “We are very fortunate to get as much foot traffic as we can handle from our supportive community,”

said Ben’s mother Tricia Hoffman. “Despite windy conditions that prevented us from inflating a bounce house as planned, Ben’s Chocolate Stand was a huge success.” She added that donations were still coming in, but the current total raised for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program at Lurie Children’s is $13,775. On Monday, Nov. 21, Ben’s family, including his parents Joe and Tricia, his siblings Emmett and Jocelyn, and his Uncle Jeff Hoffman, made a check presentation to the Pediatric Brain Tumor program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Among those who attended the brief reception were Ben’s neurosurgeon Dr. Tord Alden, his oncologist Dr. Stewart Goldman, and Nurse Wendy Stellpflug, who is the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program Coordinator. Needless to say they were delighted not only with the contribution but also to see Ben in such continued good health. Last year, in addition to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program, Ben donated a portion of the proceeds to the Sarcoma Team at Lurie Children’s in support of his friend, fellow swimmer and baseball teammate, Payton O’Brien. Payton lost his fight and

On Monday afternoon, Nov. 28, the Independent learned that on November 15 at 8 p.m., the Elmhurst police responded to the 100 block of York Road, where a male subject

had attempted to pass a counterfeit $100-dollar bill at a retail establishment. According to a release issued by Police Chief Michael Ruth, officers located the subject along with several others in a parking lot at York Rd. and North Ave. Subsequent investigation revealed that the subjects had successfully passed a counterfeit bill at a restau-

rant in Elmhurst and at a restaurant in Oak Brook. Pierre J. West, 26, Marcus Buchanan, 46, and Cordale Carroll, 29, all of Chicago, were arrested and charged with Felony Forgery and transported DuPage County Jail: Elmhurst police continue to caution businesses on counterfeit bills, extra care should be used when receiving $50- and $100-dollar bills.

IC Catholic Prep football team wins state championship 43-0 Knights close out perfect campaign with another blowout victory

Perfection! Domination! Those are the two words that sum up the IC Catholic Prep football team’s 2016 season. The Knights put the bow on a perfect 14-0 season with a 43-0 victory over Carlinville in the Class 3A state football title game held at Memorial Stadium on the grounds of the University of Illinois in Champaign. It was IC Catholic Prep’s third state title. The Knights also won state crowns in 2002 and 2008. Head coach Bill Krefft has now won state titles as a player and coach at IC Catholic Prep. He was a lineman and co-captain on the 2002 state-championship team. Krefft also was an assistant coach on the 2008 title team. In the win against Carlinville, the Knights were their usual dominating selves, out-gaining their

opponent 475 yards to 190 yards despite Carlinville running seven more offensive plays. IC Catholic Prep ran for 333 yards on the ground on only 34 carries and also had 142 passing yards. Carlinville also held the ball longer than IC Catholic Prep (25:35-22:25) yet scored no points. Jordan Rowell led the Knights with a Class 3A state-championship game record 270 rushing yards on 26 carries (10.4 yards per carry). He scored three more rushing touchdowns and added a fourth on a pass reception to share a Class 3A state record for most touchdowns in the championship contest (4). Rowell finished the season with 2,295 rushing yards and 37 rushing touchdowns. He finished the year with 42 total touchdowns. The 42 touchdowns in a season places Rowell in the Top 10 in state history all-time. Luke Ricobene completed 9 of

17 passes for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Lazerick Eatman caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdown. Matt Sutton caught two passes for 41 yards and a touchdown while Rowell had a fourth touchdown via a reception. He finished with two catches for 28 yards and the one score. Khalil Saunders had two catches for 20 yards. Sutton started the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown reception from Ricobene with 11:09 to play in the first quarter. After IC Catholic Prep recovered the ensuing kickoff. Eatman, on the very next play, caught a 28-yard TD from Ricobene with 11:00 to play in the first quarter to give the Knights a 15-0 lead. Rowell added touchdown runs of 20 and 14 yards in the first quarter and the Knights, just like that, led 29-0 after 12 minutes of action. Rowell rounded out the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown reception from Ricobene in the third

No IC Catholic Prep scoring drive took more than five minutes. Five of the Knights’ six scoring drives took under two minutes each. With the exception of an 11play, 66-yard drive that took 4:18, the Knights other scoring possessions lasted four plays, one play, six plays, five plays and four plays. On the defensive end, Kemon Reese had 16 tackles, including 11 solos. Chris Johnson had 14 tackles. Khali Saunders, Robert Vitek, Matt Jordan and Jimmy Kenneally each had a tackle for loss. Those four tackles for loss totaled 16 yards. Khalil Saunders had a fumble recovery and an interception. Sutton also had an intercep-

tion for 30 yards. Kenneally had a quarterback sack for eight yards of loss. IC Catholic Prep finished the season scoring 721 points and allowing opponents to score only 94. It was IC Catholic Prep’s eighth shutout of the season and 11th game of the year where it held an opponent to single digits in scoring. Head coach Bill Krefft is now 42-15 in five seasons at the helm and is 25-2 over the last two seasons. Krefft played for the late Bob Cozzi on the 2002 state team and was an assistant on former head coach Bill Schmidt’s 2008 state title team. Schmidt was an assistant on the 2002 team. This also marked the first undefeated season in program history. The 2002 team went 13-1, while the 2008 team made the playoffs as a 5-4 team and finished 10-4 after going on a 5-0 run in the postseason.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage or defacement to property/ vehicle/criminal trespass to property/vehicle/ damage to property Nov. 21 An officer responded to a report of a subject sleeping inside a coffee shop in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at around 8:56 a.m. The complainant pointed out the person who had been asleep off and on inside the shop since 8 a.m. and stated that this is an ongoing problem with them. The person was issued a no-trespass notice.

Disorderly conduct Nov. 20 • Employees at the Elmhurst Public Library reported that a suspect who was not identified was in the library and frightening employees with rhetoric. When the library manager spoke to the suspect about the complaints, the suspect reportedly became verbally abusive toward staff members. The suspect left the library and later came to the police department, where the suspect stated that the complainant had threatened him. An officer issued a no trespass order to the suspect the following day. • Victims in the 400 block of Spring told police at around 6:37 p.m. that after an argument with a neighbor over the behavior of the neighbor’s son, both the son and the neighbor reportedly displayed obscene hand gestures towards the victims. The neighbor also allegedly called the victim an undisclosed name. An officer spoke with the neighbor, who agreed that she acted inappropriately and agreed to avoid further contact with the victim. Nov. 18 Robert Champagne, 27, of River Forest, was arrested in the 1000 block of Route 83 at around 8:52 p.m. According to police, a victim reported that her ex-boyfriend had been sending text messages to her while she was at work. Police said Champagne was located in River Forest and was charged with disorderly conduct.

Obstruction Nov. 21 Monique Rose, 35, of Chicago, was arrested near Lake and Route 83 at around 9:42 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Rose, a passenger in the rear seat, provided an officer with two false names and dates of birth, believing she had a warrant for her arrest. She was charged with two counts of obstructing identification and for no seat belt.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia Nov. 20 Samie John, 61, of Woodridge, was issued a citation near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 11:47 p.m. for possession of cannabis and improper lane usage following a traffic stop. Nov. 18 • Hector Garcia, 24, of Maywood, was issued citations by police near North and Melrose at around 12:09 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a seatbelt enforcement zone in the area, an officer detected an odor of burnt cannabis coming from the vehicle. According to police, Garcia, a passenger in the front seat of a vehicle who had not been wearing his seat belt, provided an officer with a clear plastic bag containing green plant material suspected to be cannabis. He was cited for possession of cannabis and no seat belt. • Matthew Vachaparambil, 20, of Elmhurst, was arrested near North and Melrose at around 12:36 a.m. and charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of alcohol by a minor and zero tolerance following a traffic stop. Nov. 17 • Michael Pullia, 25, of Chicago, was arrested near Wilson and Grand at around 1:16 a.m. and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and no rear registration plate light following a traffic stop due to the report of a suspicious vehicle. • Vashon James, 33, of Chicago, was issued citations by police near North and Myrtle at

Nov. 19 While on DUI patrol near Route 83 and I-290 at around 1:22 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop. Upon conversation with the driver, the driver reportedly provided the officer with a false name and date of birth. It was learned that the driver had a failure to appear warrant out of Kane County. The officer began to advise the suspect he was under arrest when he allegedly fled on foot from officers. A brief chase ensued, and the Bloomingdale Police Department’s K-9 unit responded to the area to assist with no results locating the suspect. An officer will be following up and seeking an arrest warrant.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Nov. 22 • Margaret Taylor, 52, of Glendale Heights, was arrested at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:48 p.m. Police said Taylor was recognized to have stolen KitchenAid® mixers in the store previously, and was seen stealing another similar item on the above date. The value of the merchandise was $329.99, according to police. In addition, she had a valid DuPage County warrant. She was charged with three felony counts of retail theft. • A victim in the 1100 block of S. Euclid Ave. told police at around 3:08 p.m. that she had parked her vehicle in a lot at the above location for about six hours. When she returned to the parking lot, the vehicle was gone. The vehicle was listed as stolen; the victim has no suspects and possesses only keys. • A juvenile suspect was arrested at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:48 p.m. and charged with retail theft. Nov. 21 • Subsequent to suspicious circumstances in the 400 block of S. Hampshire at around 9:13 p.m., a complainant told police that a suspect— described as a black male in his mid-30s with facial hair, a black jacket, a red-hooded sweater, black pants, and possibly with a backpack and a black BMX style bicycle—threw a purse into the dumpster behind a restaurant and contacted the police department. The purse was recovered and the owner was notified. Several items were taken out of the purse. The area was checked for the suspect with no results. • A victim in the 100 block of E. Wilson told police at around 12:01 p.m. that he received a call from American Express and a company called Bilspay, advising him an attempt was made to open a credit card under his name. He did not apply for these, contacted the credit bureaus to notify them and said he would sign complaints if the suspect is located. An officer couldn’t get any information from American Express, but Bilspay advised that the account was applied for online and there was a difference of one day in the date of birth of the person posing as the victim. Nov. 19 • Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of S. Washington at around 6:14 p.m. A victim told police that she was notified by her credit card’s fraud unit that her card was used online at Macy’s. The victim had the credit card cancelled. The victim received a letter from Ma-

cys.com about the online purchase that was in someone else’s name but her address. A further investigation is pending with Macy’s consumer department. • A victim in the 300 block of W. Lake St. told police at around 8:33 p.m. that during his son’s birthday party, they put his birthday gifts on a cart that was kept with other carts at the front desk along the south wall of the business. When the cart was bought into the party room, four of the gifts were missing.

Nov. 17 • Theft was reported at a bank in the 900 block of N. Weigel at around 2:11 p.m. A victim told police that he went into the employee bathroom and placed her cell phone, valued at $400, on a paper towel box in the bathroom, but forgot the phone. She checked the bathroom, but found that the phone was gone. The business was searched with no results. • Identity theft was reported in the 1000 block of S. Swain at around 4:47 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) ordered merchandise online using her Kohl’s credit card. The account shows the merchandise being shipped to the victim’s home, however, the phone number and email were not the victim’s. The Kohl’s agent advised that the suspect may have purchased the items to have Kohl’s cash sent to their email. The agent closed the victim’s account, but could not stop the shipment which had already been processed. The victim stated she would contact an officer if anyone suspicious was in the area when the packages arrived. • Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 6:15 p.m. Police said a suspect was detained by store security. A complainant told police he observed a suspect open a box of eyeshadow and hide it in the waistband of her pants. She was arrested and released with charges pending. • Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of N. Clinton at around 11:12 a.m. A victim reported to police that he was contacted by the Homewood Police Department advising him they arrested a subject with his information on an ID card. The victim was informed that a suspect was attempting to charge items to the victim’s Kohl’s account using the victim’s ID and Social Security number. The victim also reported several credit cards had been opened under his name. The case is pending investigation.

Nov. 16 A victim near North and Clinton told police at around 3:41 p.m. that her iPhone had been stolen. The victim stated that after she lost the phone, an unknown suspect contacted her on Facebook, advising her to erase information on her phone or he would release pictures of her on Facebook. The victim does not have the suspect’s information and will replace the phone. An investigation is pending.

Sept. 29 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of Fellows at around 2:10 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect made an online purchase using his bank check card in Chicago and an overdraft fee was issued. The victim notified his bank which reversed the charges. Later the bank advised the victim that he had benefited some way from the fraudulent charges and it was again added back onto his account.

April 25-April 26 A victim in the 100 block of S. West Ave. told police that during the above time frame, he was alerted by Target that an unknown suspect(s) attempted to open two unauthorized credit card accounts. The victim also received a bill from Verizon Wireless on an unauthorized account and was told by Verizon to file a police report if he wanted to dispute the charges.

Before the meeting Mayor Steve Morley led them on a tour of the administrative offices and then took them to the City Council room where he presided over a resolution for extra ice cream for Field students for a month. Morley said if the staff at Field School had any questions to call him. • TIF 2 funds transferred to TIF 5 Aldermen have approved the transfer of funds of approximately $3 million in 2015 and all subsequent funds of approximately $450,000 to be collected in 2017, from the Lake Street Development Fund (TIF2) to

the Church Rd./Lake St Redevelopment Fund (TIF 5). These funds will be used for TIF eligible costs, including land acquisition/improvements for the redevelopment of the Elmhurst BMW dealership within TIF 5. Illinois State Statutes for Tax Increment Financing (TIF) allow for the transfer of funds between contiguous TIF Districts. The City agreed to match the incentive offered by a neighboring community seeking to have the BMW dealership to move there. • CAC raises TIF concern; “cart put before the horse” Ben Silver, a lawyer for the Citizen Advocacy Center, spoke during public comment saying he was concerned about the timeline of the transfer of funds from TIF #2 to TIF #5. • Suspect with 450 grams cannabis, gun nabbed at checkpoint On Nov. 22, Marcus Browley Jr., 26, of Tucson, Ariz., was arrested near York and Industrial at around 12:58 a.m. Police said that while conducting a seatbelt checkpoint, an officer detected an odor of cannabis from the vehicle. Browley Jr., according to police, stated that there was a small amount of cannabis inside the vehicle and a gun. Police said a search of the vehicle yielded 459 grams of cannabis located in the trunk inside a plastic bag, a black automatic pistol and $2,000 in cash. He was charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of cannabis. • Victim claims $11,700 cash stolen while he was incarcerated A complainant in the 200 block of E. Grantley told police that he had $11,700 in cash in the wall of his walk-in closet. The suspect, believed to be his ex-girlfriend, and two sons all knew about the money. Police said the complainant told the suspect to use $1,000 to post bond and for his bail. A court order did not allow the complainant back into his residence until Nov. 5. When the complainant returned home, he found no money in the closet. His ex-girlfriend denies taking the money. • Man who fell, struck head found to be intoxicated On Nov. 20, Bernard Smolenski, 63, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation by police in the 100 block of Addison at around 8:56 p.m. Police said that subject to a call of a subject who fell in the street, Smolenski was found to be intoxicated. He reportedly had fallen and struck his head on the roadway. He was cited for disorderly conduct/public intoxication.

• Domestic battery reported at local hotel On Nov. 19, a 29-year-old Maywood woman was arrested in the 900 block of Riverside at around 8:19 a.m. According to police, the suspect stated that the victim had choked her twice while they were alone in a hotel room. The victim was reportedly struck by a glass bottle, which resulted in a head injury. The suspect had the victim’s blood on her T-shirt and the suspect did not have any injuries that required medical attention. The victim was taken to the police station for his

KARL ZERFOSS, 92 Karl Zerfoss, an Elmhurst resident for nearly 50 years, died peacefully November 15, 2016, at the Oakbrook Health Care Center at the age of 92. He had been ailing for the past four years. Karl served as a T 5 radio operator in the 397th Regiment of the 100th Infantry Division during WWII. He was a graduate of the University of Chicago with a Master’s degree in economics. He spent 50 years in security analysis and investment management, including his time with Kemper Financial Services and The Burridge Group. With a special interest in music, Karl played the piano all of his life, attended the symphony, chamber and early music series. He was also a member and officer of the Cliff Dwellers Arts Club. He joined the Downers Grove Friends Meeting in 2002, where he was an active member, serving a term as recording clerk. Karl is survived by Evelyn, his

Contemplating marriage: Knowing the rules

I’ve been contemplating marriage. Not getting married. I took care of that task years ago. I’ve been contemplating marriage as in the concept of. My daughter recently tied the knot and I’ve been reminiscing about my own newlywed days – and some of the lessons learned since way back then. When I signed up for this deal called marriage, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Neither did my husband. If someone had told us marriage might be challenging and difficult, we wouldn’t have believed them. How could loving another person be difficult? (Ha!) Thank goodness for our naivety. And optimism. Now, all these years later, I think we’d both say marriage can be challenging (not to mention a bit of hard work). But it is good work, and challenges are opportunities for growth. And when done right, it gets easier and more fulfilling as

the years pass. Most days. Since saying “I do,” my better half and I have learned a few tidbits (Dare I say rules?) about successfully navigating this thing called wedded bliss. If we were to give unsolicited advice to our daughter and other newlys (which of course we never would), here’s what we might say: 1. First, realize there are no rules, really. Think of these as starting points. 2. Over the years, you will break most if not all these rules (a.k.a. starting points). So will your spouse. Forgive him or her and just as importantly, forgive yourself.

3. It’s not about you. It’s about both of you. If you live out your marriage as though it’s about you, you’ll likely have a short marriage – or at the very least an unhappy one. 4. Eat meals together. At least once each day. They will serve as an anchor and provide an opportunity to share time and conversation with each other. It’s the seemingly small habits like this that fortify your relationship. In a marriage, small things can be big things. 5. Sleep in the same bed. Even if it seems more convenient not to. Even if the one of you snores or kicks the covers off (not that I’m implying anything). Love is hardly ever convenient. Waking together gives you a few moments to plan your day, and plot your strategies – if you have children. It also gives you the opportunity to experience morning breath and morning hair. It gives you the chance to say

Storm water trap chosen over surface detention Project will provide relief to 63 homes in the Washington St. area By Dan McLeister FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

At its meeting on Monday, Nov. 21, the Elmhurst City Council has approved a proposal for a precast concrete underground storm water retention vault, which will provide flood relief to 63 homes in the Wash-

ington St. area. The storm trap, to be done by StormTrap LLC, will provide for approximately three acre feet of underground storage. The project, along with the under-construction Madison Early Childhood Center Storm Water Improvement Project, will provide a significant benefit to the neighborhood, according to Alderman Jim Kennedy (6th Ward), chairman of the Public Works and Buildings (PWB) Committee which recommended approval. “Dropping flood water a foot is a big deal, but still more needs to be

done,” Kennedy said. The storm water project is currently scheduled to commence in early March of 2017. The project is planned for vacant land in the 600 block of Washington where the City bought and demolished three houses to provide space for flood control. StormTrap LLC’s proposal is for $627, 056. The actual storm vault installation, along with all other components of the overall storm water project (earth work, utility installation), will be completed under a fu-

ture contract. Purchasing the StormTrap vault directly from the supplier will allow for the manufacturing of the system to commence sooner and the project to begin earlier in 2017. Ald. Michael Honquest (4th Ward) said even an increase of a small additional amount of water detained is worth it to help out one of the worst areas of town for flooding. When Ald. Michael Bram (3rd Ward) noted that the project cost was more than a 30 percent increase from the original price for a retention basin, Kennedy said, “We are

not spending money foolishly.” “I believe every inch counts but there is a point where too much money is being spent on a project,” Bram said. “The more-than-projected $300,000 increase could have been spent elsewhere. I do not want to vote no because it would delay the project.” All 12 aldermen present voted on November 21st to approve the project. Alds. Mark Sabatino (1st Ward) and Kevin York (4th Ward) did not attend the City Council meeting. Bram said he favored an open air retention basin.

Chaplin squeaks past Blass to win County Board race in District 2

Last week, the Independent reported that as of Tuesday morning, Nov. 22, the two-year term on the DuPage County Board in District #2 had not yet been called. After a 300-vote deficit on Election night Nov. 8, Democrat Elizabeth “Liz” Chaplin was ahead of her Republican challenger Richard Blass

by just 13 votes at the Independent’s press time Tuesday morning and the DuPage County Election Commission was still counting ballots. When all was said and done, Chaplin, the incumbent, topped Blass by only 50 votes. Vote tallies which included mail and provisional ballots, resulted in Chaplin receiving 36,726 votes to Blass’ 36,676. A county board member since 2012, Chaplin said she was about ready to concede the day after the election, when preliminary results showed she trailed Blass by just 327 votes. But more than 1,000 provisional ballots had not yet been included in the totals and more than 5,000 mail ballots had not been counted. The

mail ballots had to be postmarked by Nov. 8 and received at the Commission by Nov. 22. Ultimately, 1,279 more votes were included after election night. Blass, who is an Elmhurst resident, said he will consult with his campaign manager before deciding whether to ask for a recount. “I certainly will take it under advisement,” he said. “Two weeks ago, it was just such a bad night for Democrats in general,” said Chaplin. “Everyone was telling us we had lost. It was in the newspapers.” But she never conceded because she had advised people who could not or did not want to vote on Elec-

Before the service concluded, the 2016 State Championshipbound ICCP Football Team was honored with a special blessing as they prepare for the big game in Champaign, which the team went on to win, thus clinching the state championship.

History Museum presents Jolly Old St. Nick Concert

On Friday, Dec. 2 from 7-8:15 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum is hosting the Jolly Old St. Nicholas Concert at Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, 1099 So. York St. Before there was Santa Claus, there was St. Nicholas, known traditionally as the “bearer of gifts.” On December 6, many Europeans still celebrate St. Nicholas Day, and many Christmas traditions emerged from this holiday. The Elmhurst History Museum invites the public to celebrate this tradition and Elmhurst’s German roots with a concert of German carols and a performance by Jolly Old St. Nick. Now in its 80th year, Elmhurst’s own Damenchor (Women’s Chorus) and Männerchor (Men’s Chorus) will perform German carols that the audience can join in singing. St. Nicholas himself, brought to life by first-person history performer Terry Lynch, will join the festivities to explain the celebration and take pictures with the kids. Hot cocoa and sweet treats will be provided. Children are encouraged to wear their pajamas! All ages welcome, but reservations are required. York girls basketball team goes 3-1 to kick off season By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT

The York girls basketball team finished in third place at its own York Turkey Tournament. The Dukes ended with a 3-1 record. Trinity won the tournament at 4-0. Yorkville was second at 3-1. Conant took fourth place with a 1-3 record. Prospect was fifth (2-2). St. Francis was sixth (1-3), Niles West finished seventh (1-3) and Downers Grove South was eighth (1-3). York opened the tournament with a 42-25 win over Niles West. York led 12-5 after the first quarter and 21-10 at halftime. Danielle Dennis and sophomore Kathleen Levins each had nine points. Jenna Dvorak had six points, while Jaclyn Saco had five points. York won the game shooting 26 percent from the field. Levins shot 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Madison Park pulled in nine rebounds, while Dennis had eight rebounds and Erin Strauss had six. Park had three assists and six steals. Dennis had three steals, while Saco had two steals. York had 14 steals as a team. Dennis and Caylin Rufus (4 rebounds) each blocked two shots. York then scored a 53-42 win over Prospect. The Dukes led 14-6 after the first quarter and 24-10 at halftime. Prospect outscored York 25-22 in a high-scoring fourth quarter. Dennis and Rufus each had 12 points, while Levins had 11 points for

a balanced York team. Lauren Viola had eight points. Levins shot 4-for-6 from the field. Dennis made 8 of 11 free throws, while Viola drained 4 of 6 free throws. Dennis pulled in 11 rebounds, while Levins and Rufus each had four. Rufus had three steals and Dennis blocked two shots. The Dukes then lost 46-31 to Trinity. York trailed 16-7 after the first quarter and 22-15 at halftime. Rufus led York with 13 points. Levins added six points, while Hailey Walker had five points. Rufus was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Rufus had two steals. York wrapped up tournament play with a 42-32 win over Conant. The Dukes trailed 10-7 after one quarter and led 18-16 at halftime. York outscored Conant 14-11 in the third quarter and sealed it with a 10-5 fourth quarter. The Dukes again benefitted from balanced scoring. Dennis led York with 12 points. Saco had 11 points, while Rufus scored 10 points. Saco shot 4-for-7 from the field. Dennis sank 6 of 8 free throws and also led York with seven rebounds. Rufus had five rebounds, while Park, Levins and Dvorak each had four rebounds. Saco had a team-high five steals, while Park had two. York had 10 steals as a team. Dennis was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 8.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.

The IC Catholic Prep boys bowling team returns three key contributors from last year’s squad. Coach Sarah Palandri welcomes back senior Tim Shuflit and juniors CJ Slowinski and Clayton Davis. Slowinski averages a 149, while Shuflit is at 132 and Davis at 128. Key newcomers to the team include senior Trey Morris and freshman Ian Rickert. “We are composed of very diverse students with different age levels and bowling background,” said Palandri. “Our bowlers support and encourage each other as well as being competitive during matches.” Consistency has been a big improvement for the Knights in the early part of the season.

“At the beginning of the season it was difficult to have our bowlers mark each frame with a strike or spare. I have started to see more marks and less open frames,” said Palandri. Shuflit, Slowinski and Morris have shown promise in the early going. “Each of these bowlers has the talent to go far during the season,” the coach said. “They are competitive amongst themselves.” Palandri is looking forward to seeing even more progress from her bowlers. “I see a lot more personal records being set this year,” she said. “We hope to have two or three bowlers advance to sectionals.” In the early going, IC Catholic Prep defeated Elgin St. Edward and lost to Chicago Christian. Morris and Shuflit were the team’s top finishers in each contest.

Man in the middle Senior Chris Johnson plays a key role in the IC Catholic Prep football team winning the state title

The middle linebacker position in football is akin to the quarterback on the other side of the ball—a captain, a leader, one that provides direction. And IC Catholic Prep’s football team had a dandy of a middle linebacker this season in the form of Chris Johnson, who was one of many who helped the Knights to an undefeated 14-0 season and the Class 3A state title. “It’s a major leadership role,” said Johnson. “You try to put everybody in a position that will give us leverage to try and limit the opponent’s offense.” Johnson said his improvement this season stemmed from his reactions on the field. “I’m doing a better job reading what the offense gives me and I’m attacking the ball more aggressively,” he said. “Coach (Bill) Krefft gives me the freedom to make my reads and go after the ball and take my lane.” Johnson stressed his play on the field would not have been possible with the help of others. “Our defensive line is having a great year,” he said late last week. “Jimmy Kenneally is a great leader as well and the guy to my left, Kemon Reese, is having an amazing year.” Johnson got involved with football at a young age playing with the Elmhurst Eagles and Memorial Park (Hillside) Spartans youth programs. “I like that football is a contact

sport and also that it takes a team to win,” said Johnson, who also played tight end on offense. Johnson said it’s tough to put into words what this season has been like. “It’s been exciting and exhilarating. It’s been nothing but great,” he said. “We were aiming for this goal the whole year ever since January when we started putting work in the weight room in the off-season.” Johnson added his time in the program is something he won’t forget. “I love communicating with my teammates and just talking to the guys,” he said. “These guys are my brothers. I feel like I’ve grown a lot and matured a lot since I’ve been here and these guys have helped me.” Johnson noted a big thrill for him once the season started was the team’s Week 1 win against Bishop McNamara, a team that handed the Knights both its losses last year, including the last one in the state semifinals. “We had some jitters and butterflies when the game first started, but once we started playing everything flowed and we got a win,” he said. And 13 wins later the Knights now can call themselves state champions.

IC Catholic Prep sophomore Ricky Mysliewiec said his improved play on both sides of the line this season is attributed to one source. “You name it and the coaching staff helped me get better at it,” said Mysliewiec, who played left tackle on offense and defensive tackle and nose guard on defense for the Knights, who won the Class 3A state football title last Friday in Champaign. “We have great coaches who help us get better. They helped me with my feet and technique. They have helped me with everything. I know more now, I’m moving my feet quicker and pulling my inside foot. They are great. They are willing to help anybody learn how to play the game.” Mysliewiec said technique alone didn’t help the offensive line open major holes in the opposing defense throughout the season. “We are so close that we know what we have to do to be the very best on every single play,” he said. “It’s amazing. We know what to do with each other. We click on that line and that gives Jordan (Rowell) and Lazerick (Eatman) the space and holes they need to get 10 to 15 yards a carry.” Mysliewiec said his strong play on defense resulted from a crash course on improved technique. “I’m shooting my hands and running my feet,” he said. “We do some things differently on the defensive line. I’m getting off the blocks and getting to the gaps and running my feet.” And Mysliewiec said he had plenty of help from the team’s second line of defense. “Our linebackers

are central to the defense. They have more of a key role,” he said. “Every play they make, they make us look good on the line. For us it’s been about everybody doing their job. If everybody does their job it makes everybody look good. And if we all are doing our job we all are clicking together.” Mysliewiec said his age and the fact he’s going up against juniors and seniors hasn’t been a factor. “I’ve always been a big kid and was a kid who was over the weight limit in my football age group and played up,” he said. “I’m very experienced with that. I was in fourth grade and playing up age levels. It doesn’t bother or affect me.” Mysliewiec said despite playing on both sides of the line, fatigue never has been a problem. “Coach gets us so ready starting in summer camp,” he said. “We’re so ready when the season starts. We run a lot so we are conditioned very well. We’re strong up and down the team. It’s football. It’s what you play for. You want to be out there so you suck it up if you are a little tired because your teammates depend on you.” Just two years into his high-school football experience and Mysliewiec had the opportunity to play for and win a state championship. “It’s unbelievable,” he said earlier last week. “I can’t even describe it. It’s been such a great dream of mine to play on a team like this. You grow up wishing you could do this and now you have the opportunity. We have an unbelievable team with great coaches.” And that unbelievable team returned to Elmhurst with a state championship.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team wins Lisle tournament

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team went a perfect 4-0 to win the Lisle Thanksgiving tournament. The Trojans scored a 53-46 win over Lisle in the championship contest. Timothy led 18-14 after the first quarter and went into halftime tied 31-31. The Trojans outscored Lisle 10-5 in the third quarter and 12-10 in the fourth. Jonny Strube led the Trojans with 16 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. He shot 6-for11 from the field and 4-for-8 from the 3-point line. Brandon Orange added 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. He shot 7-for-12 from the field. Joey Davidson added 10 points, five assists and two steals. Timothy also scored a 64-54 win

over Evergreen Park. Timothy led 20-17 after the first quarter and 4128 at halftime. The lead was extended to 53-33 at the end of the third quarter. Orange had 16 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and two assists. Davidson added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Williams had 10 points and three assists. Mike Thomas added eight points and three assists, while Strube had seven points, seven rebounds, two blocks and one assist. Jimmy Allen had four points, five rebounds and three assists. Ty Merrick had five points, five assists and four rebounds, while Nick Huisman had two rebounds. In a 75-26 win over Yorkville Christian, Davidson had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Thomas had 10 points, three rebounds and one assist. Allen had

seven points, two assists and two rebounds. Nick Tameling had seven points, five rebounds and two assists. Jon Hoekstra had seven points and one assist. York boys basketball The York boys basketball team placed third at the recent Palatine tournament that kicked off the season. The Dukes went 3-1 at Palatine. York opened the tournament with a 66-35 win over Chicago Tilden and then scored a 47-32 win over Waubonsie Valley. The Dukes lost 71-57 to Deerfield and then came back to beat Maine West 67-51 in the third-place contest. Timothy Christian girls basketball The Timothy Christian girls bas-

ketball team was a 46-15 winner over IMSA. The win gave the Trojans a third-place finish at the IMSAAurora Christian tournament. The Trojans finished 3-1 in the event. Olivia Schuringa led the Trojans with 11 points and five rebounds. Ava Venema had 10 points and nine rebounds, while Olivia Hoekstra had 10 points, four rebounds and three steals. IC Catholic Prep girls basketball The IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team went 2-2 at its own Thanksgiving tournament. The Knights opened things up with a 4735 win over Westmont. IC Catholic Prep then scored a 49-46 win over Luther North. The Knights lost 36-15 to Evergreen Park and 51-34 to Nazareth Academy.

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team started its season on a high note by winning the Coal City tournament. The Knights went a perfect 4-0. IC Catholic Prep opened the tournament with a 69-51 win over Manteno. The Knights led 12-9 after the first quarter and 36-28 at halftime. IC Catholic Prep led 5639 heading into the fourth quarter. Austin Reed led the Knights with 24 points. Kevin Cheng added 15 points, while Alex Meurer had 12 points. Galvin Gecsey and Tony Gaudio each had seven points. Cheng sank four 3-pointers, while

Reed had two. Meurer and Gaudio each had one. The Knights followed that win up with a 58-39 win over Peotone. The Knights led 13-6 after the first quarter and 28-16 at halftime. Austin Reed led the Knights with 18 points. Cheng chipped in 15 points, while Amari Reed had nine points and Meurer finished with eight points. Austin Reed sank three 3-poitners, while Cheng had two. IC Catholic Prep moved to 3-0 in the tournament with a 62-45 win over Beecher. The Knights used a 20-9 run in the second quarter and a 19-10 third quarter advantage to pull away.

Austin Reed had 19 points. Cheng added 16 points, while Meurer had 13 points and Gaudio finished with six points. Cheng hit four 3-pointers. Austin Reed had two 3s and Meurer had one. The Knights won the tournament

with a 48-34 victory over Morris to finish 4-0. The Knights had to come back from a 20-17 halftime deficit and did so by outscoring Morris 15-10 in the third quarter and 16-4 in the fourth quarter. Austin Reed led the Knights with 15 points. Cheng and Meurer each

had nine points. Gecsey and Gaudio each had six points. Cheng and Austin Reed each hit three 3-pointers. Meurer had one 3-pointer. IC Catholic Prep made 27 threepointers in the tournament, including games of eight, seven, seven and five.

Less invasive spine surgery returns patient to very active lifestyle You would never guess that Chuck Thompson, 46, of Oak Brook, an active father of four who spent the summer wakesurfing with his family, could barely walk without pain just more than a year ago. The problems began after a waterskiing accident one morning in June 2012, when Thompson ruptured two discs in his low back. The discs degenerated after two years, which caused immense pain in his back and crippling sciatica. “Walking and sitting was excruciating. I could hardly walk down the street without sweating,” says Thompson. Thompson met with several highly regarded orthopedic Chuck Thompson physicians in downtown Chicago, but he says, “I just didn’t get a good feeling about it. It was all about them and not about me.” Thompson was about to fly to a spine center in Austin, Texas when a friend referred him to Nicholas Mataragas, MD, a spine surgeon with DuPage Medical Group who performs surgery at Edward-Elmhurst Health.

“I met with Dr. Mataragas and the first thing he asked me was, ‘Well what do you want your life to look like after surgery?’” says Thompson. “He was the only doctor who asked me what I want my life to look like, versus what he could do for me.” Thompson told Dr. Mataragas he wanted to be able to downhill ski. Together, they reviewed the new technologies and all the possibilities for treatment. Thompson spent months doing his own extensive research and consulting with Dr. Mataragas, who he said listened patiently and was willing to go at the pace he needed. Thompson wanted to avoid invasive surgery, and Dr. Mataragas, who has expertise in innovative, less invasive techniques, recommended spinal fusion. On May 15, 2015 at Elmhurst Hospital, Thompson had minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS TLIF) surgery. Dr. Mataragas used special, high-tech equipment that enabled him to access the spine without cutting through muscle. “This procedure gives patients all of the benefits of traditional lumbar fusion surgery without many of the limitations that it can entail. Patients who have the minimally invasive surgery have much less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and much quicker return to work,” says Dr. Mataragas. “I immediately woke up without the pain,” he says. “My surgical healing time was drastically reduced. I was actually walking the next day. With a brace and being very careful, but still. “It did take a long healing process for it to fully fuse. You have to be very disciplined. You aren’t supposed to twist for about three months, even getting out of bed you can’t twist, but Dr. Mataragas walked me through all that,” he said. “Considering three months of inconvenience for my life back with no pain. I’m just so glad I went through it. I’m so grateful.” Thompson’s goal was to ski with his family in Park City by Presidents’ Day in February. After seven months of physical therapy, he got clearance from Dr. Mataragas – he would be able to meet his goal. “I skied in Park City for the first time without pain in about three years and we had a blast as a family,” he says. “We cater the patient’s exact surgical procedure to their lifestyle and occupation. We also plan their recovery and rehab to allow for the quickest return to their usual activities as possible,” says Dr. Mataragas. Thompson hopes to encourage others who feel hopeless or are too afraid to have the surgery. “It really is a mindset. You have to ask yourself, ‘what little baby step can I make today to get closer to my goal?’” He says he was fortunate to have friends who had gone through similar procedures and guided him through it, along with his wife of 24 years, Joi. At his one-year check-up last May, Thompson was given full clearance by Dr. Mataragas. “He said, ‘go live your life, you have no restrictions.’” He had gotten his life back. “Before the surgery, I was in so much pain. Every step was a lightning bolt and sitting felt like daggers going into my back. I would have to lay on the couch with ice twice a day for two hours just to be able to do anything,” says Thompson. Today, Thompson is enjoying an active and pain-free lifestyle. “The surgery put me back into humankind. By this summer, my life was back to normal.” He, Joi, and their four children, ages 12, 14, 16 and 18, spent time at their lake house during the summer, where Thompson enjoyed stand-up paddleboarding and wakesurfing. For winter, he’s looking forward to downhill skiing with his family. The Governmental Affairs Committee of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry is sharing the following update from the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) regarding a court injunction against new overtime exemption regulations: On November 22, 2016, a federal district court in Texas granted a preliminary injunction that temporarily blocks the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) from implementing and enforcing its recently revised regulations on the white-collar exemptions to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Employers should note that this is only a temporary injunction, not a permanent one, the ACCE noted.
