Correction

Recently, the Independent has published several stories and photos relating to the upcoming opening of the new Yorkfield Food Pantry. A story published on pg. 4 of the December 3 issue of the Independent contained some inaccurate information. It indicated Tim Grant from Dulles Landscaping provided tree removal and sodding, but in fact, it was Tim Grant from Bellascapes Landscaping who provided the landscaping work and Tom Tyler from Bartlett Tree Experts who removed the trees. The Independent regrets the error.

Ben’s Chocolate Stand raises $12,000+ for pediatric cancer Resident, 10, gives back to those who treated him; Nestle USA contributes

ELMHURST — Ten-year-old brain cancer survivor Ben Hoffmann held the second annual Ben’s Chocolate Stand in his Elmhurst driveway Sunday, raising more than $12,000 for the hospital where he received treatment. More than 200 people joined the Lincoln Elementary fourth grader and his family for hot cocoa, chocolate bark and other chocolate-dipped treats, with all proceeds benefiting Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. When Ben was five months old, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer called a primitive neuroectodermal tumor. He immediately began treatment through the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program at Lurie Children’s and over the course of four years, endured several cycles of high-dose chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant and multiple brain surgeries to resect the tumor. Ben has been cancer-free since his last surgery in May 2009. The idea for Ben’s Chocolate Stand was born in the fall of 2014 when Ben reached the milestone of five cancer-free years. The Hoffmanns wanted to give back to the team of doctors and nurses who treated Ben, while also helping other kids suffering from brain tumors. “Ben was always asking to hold a lemonade stand in our driveway, but we didn’t think cold lemonade would be a big draw in November,” said Ben’s mother Tricia. “Hot chocolate seemed like a much better option.” But Ben didn’t stop with hot chocolate.

Pictured here (center) is Lincoln fourth grader Ben Hoffman, who held the second annual “Ben’s Chocolate Stand” in his own Elmhurst driveway, raising funds for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program at Lurie Children’s hospital where he received treatment for brain cancer. The event raised more than $12,000 for pediatric brain tumor research and treatment, with donations still coming in.

He and his brother Emmett, 8, and sister Jocelyn, 6, began melting morsels to make an assortment of chocolate bark and chocolate-dipped treats to sell along with the hot cocoa. The first Ben’s Chocolate Stand raised over $8,400 for Lurie Children’s. “So many people donated and we had so much fun, we decided to do the chocolate stand every year,” Ben said. This year, the Hoffmanns reached out to Nestle USA about their second annual event. The company graciously donated two cases each of Nestle Tollhouse morsels and Nestle hot cocoa mix, enough to make the more than 500 packages of chocolate bark, 15 gallons of hot cocoa and 200+ packages of chocolate-dipped cookies and marshmallows sold. This year’s sale raised $12,117 by Monday, with donations continuing to pour into

ELMHURST — The news of death of Annie LeGere was kept among close family and friends to respect their privacy.

Obituary

By now, most people have heard about the Sandburg 8th grader who went into anaphylactic shock at a sleepover just two days before school started. Rushed to the hospital, Annie went into cardiac arrest while there and, as soon as she was

Louise Idaszak, 83 ELMHURST — Louise Idaszak, nee Baschieri, a resident of Elmhurst for more than 50 years, passed away on Monday, November 16, 2015, at the age of 83. Beloved wife of Joe; loving mother of Joe (Clare) and Marty (Andrea); devoted grandmother of Kristin and Joe. Sister of Jack Baschieri. Sister-in-law of Rose and Jerry (Geri). Fond aunt of Debby and Gia, Alex and Josh. Born on July 7, 1932, Louise was raised in Chicago. After graduating from Notre Dame School for Girls, she worked in the accounting department for Peter Hand Brewery. She married Joe 60 years ago. After several years, she stayed at home to raise Joe and Marty. Louise was a member of Visitation Church in Elmhurst. She was a member of the Elmhurst YMCA for 20 years and a great swimmer. She loved going to the movies and the Lyric Opera with Joe. They vacationed together every year, somewhere in the U.S. and abroad. She was especially kind to people both emotionally and financially. She had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed. Information was provided by the family.

Ben’s Lurie Children’s foundation page. “We’re overwhelmed at how our family, friends and community came together to support Ben and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program,” said Ben’s father, Joe. Two Elmhurst businesses also donated their services to Ben’s Chocolate Stand. Bounce Houses R Us provided a bounce house for the event and Angel Fancy Design Studio helped with a banner and logo, and even surprised Ben with his own branded sweatshirt and hat. This year, in addition to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program, Ben will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Sarcoma Team at Lurie Children’s in support of his friend and swim and baseball teammate, Payton O’Brien. Payton is a seven-yearold Elmhurst resident who has been bravely battling osteosarcoma.

Fundraiser in honor of Sandburg 8th grader who passed away suddenly

stable, was sent to Lutheran General where she was put on a ventilator. Nine days later, on August 26, 2015, Annie LeGere died. She was 13. “It has been devastating for the 8th graders and really, everyone in Elmhurst,” said Beth Plummer, a close family friend. “Her best friends decided to throw her a Christmas dance in her honor so the Pink Christmas dance was started. We hope it will be a healing time for the kids and a great tribute to Annie.” Annie’s parents Shelly and John LeGere have established a foundation in her honor called The Annie LeGere Foundation: To the Moon and Back. The Pink Christmas Dance for 8th and 9th graders will be the foundation’s first official public fundraiser. The name of the foundation came from one of Annie’s favorite sayings: If someone said they loved her, she would respond that she loved them too, “to the moon

and back.” The foundation website is amazingannie.org. The mission of The Annie LeGere Foundation Inc., To the Moon and Back, is fourfold: 1) promote allergy awareness and research; 2) educate parents and children on the symptoms of allergic reaction and what to do when they happen; 3) work with state and local authorities to pass legislation making it mandatory for first responders and schools to carry and stock epinephrine auto-injectors; and 4) to support training of first responders and school staff in the use of epinephrine auto-injectors. “If the first responder on the scene had had an epi-pen, Annie might have lived,” Plummer said. “By the time the ambulance got there, it was too late.” On Saturday, December 12, the Pink Christmas Dance will take place at Wilder Mansion from 8-10:30 p.m. Tickets for students are $35 per person. For more information, Beth Plummer can be reached at 630-2916569.

District 205 facility problems will have to be addressed soon Focus 205 co-chair notes ‘long range plan is needed’ By Dan McLeister For The Elmhurst Independent

ELMHURST — According to John Morrissey, co-chairman of Focus 205, the current state of District 205 facilities is the result of solving immediate problems as they arise, without creating a long-term plan that could benefit generations to come. “There is no question that there are pressing facility needs that will have to be addressed

soon, but what if we, as a community, challenged ourselves to try to meet those needs and enrich our spaces, so that our teachers can maximize student achievement and generations of Elmhurst students leave District 205 future-ready?” Morrissey made those comments at the fourth session of Focus 205 held on December 2 at York High School. About 65 people attended the meeting, compared to 88 at the 3rd session in November, 77 in October and 179 at the first session in September. “The reality is, at some point, the community will have to do something,” Superintendent David Moyer stated. “Will this

‘something’ set the community up for the next 50 years or more? Or will it be a short-term fix, that buys ten years but in fact, fails to support any of the District’s long-term goals and results in all of us repeating the same conversations we’re having now in 2025? “The goal is for the Board and administration to garner input on crafting a long range plan that supports the moral imperative of raising the bar and closing the achievement gap for all students, ensures financial sustainability, and combines the three major functions of student achievement, finances and facilities into a coherent vision.

“The vision must provide for both enhancements and efficiencies. This can be done, but it will take creativity, courage and community support for the District to achieve this winwin-win.” School facilities play a critical role in the ability of a school district to deliver instruction in an effective manner, according to Moyer. He said that was the emphasis of the 4th session— School Facilities in the 21st Century. Options, according to members of the architectural firm of Wight & Co., could include optimizing existing space such as using hallways for small groups and re-inventing librar-

ies to better align with the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s students. The facilities session, the fourth in a series starting in September, is only the beginning, said Kara Caforio, co-chair of Focus 205. Phase #2 will begin early in 2016. Topics from January to March will include building improvements, futureready classrooms, and safety/ security aspects. In April, there will be a summary report, followed by a presentation to the Board of Education in May. Activities in June will include open house events, mailings, brochures, newsletters, surveys and social media activities.

The 2016 contract includes an additional cost of about $94,000 to include coverage for two new full-time positions, as well as eight part-time employees who work over 30 hours per week. Those part-time employees are eligible for coverage under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The new contract agreement will allow employees to select from a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), three traditional Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) and a PPO with a Health Savings Account. Each of the options will offer different levels of coverage and cost. Commissioners also voted unanimously to renew the district’s annual group dental insurance contract with Delta Dental, which is up for renewal on Jan. 1, 2016. The renewed contract calls for 2016 will cost approximately $72,000, which reflects no increase from 2015. The district has held a contract with Delta Dental since 2009. Budget set for approval Dec. 16 The Dec. 2 meeting also included continued discussion of the district’s proposed budget for 2016. Board members spent a majority of their previous meeting (on Nov. 18) discussing the proposed budget for the district’s upcoming fiscal year, which begins on Jan. 1, 2016. The board is expected to vote to approve the budget at its next meeting on Dec. 16. The continued budget discussion at the Dec. 2 meeting included additional information on the 2016 budget for Sugar Creek Golf Course, which has projected revenues of $1,055,735 and projected expenses of $1,055,626. Question about debt related to SCGC Commissioner Patricia Morissette-Moll noted that Sugar Creek Golf Course continues to carry debt. Executive Director Jim Rogers responded that the course does still have debt, with issuance payments remaining for about the next 10 years. Rogers said that in 2015, the course’s parent entities—the Elmhurst Park District and the Village of Villa Park—will not have to contribute to those debt payments, as the course generated enough of an operating net revenue this year to cover the expense. Update on storm water detention plans The meeting also included a brief discussion of the park district’s ongoing negotiations with the City of Elmhurst regarding the city’s plans to install storm water detention facilities at park district sites, including York Commons. Rogers said at the Dec. 2 park district board meeting that the city and district are close to reaching an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) covering the terms of the district’s construction of a storm water detention facility at York Commons. Board members voted unanimously to approve the board’s proposed meeting dates for 2016. The board typically meets twice a month. The first meeting of next near will take place on Jan. 13, 2016. The board will hold its final meeting of 2015 on Dec. 16.

n Thursday, December 3, the Elmhurst Park District held the annual Old-Fashioned Tree Lighting in Wilder Park where community groups and organizations, families and individuals were invited to sponsor a tree and decorate it. Then that evening, the switch was thrown and all the trees were lit. The remainder of the evening included holiday musical entertainment, live reindeer, children’s activities inside Wilder Mansion, and a special visitor from the North Pole. There were cookies and hot cocoa from Brewpoint Coffee. The event was sponsored by Mariano’s and Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare.

Hospital hosts annual Love Lights reception, tree-lighting Therapy dogs, handlers attend as VIP guests By Dee Longfellow For The Independent

A

bounty of twinkling lights sprinkled along the promenade at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital on the evening of Friday, December 4, when the switch was thrown and the trees were lit to indicate the holiday season’s official opening. Hospital President & CEO Mary Lou Mastro spoke to the crowd gathered at the hospital’s main entrance to witness the event, before retiring inside the lobby for a reception to celebrate the Love Lights program. Members of the community are

invited to purchase an ornament to commemorate a person in their lives who passed away. The names of the honored people go onto a list that remains at the hospital throughout the season. Special VIP “guests” included three therapy dogs who remained close to the side of their handlers throughout the evening, even while indoors where guests enjoyed coffee and pastries. The dogs were not only beautiful to look at, but also demonstrated the discipline learned in their special training to be therapy dogs. The dogs will eventually be assigned to help patients who have certain disabilities. For more information about the hospital or the Love Lights program, please visit eehealth. org.

Pictured at the Love Lights reception are (from left) Elmhurst Hospital president Mary Lou Mastro, Samer F. Najjar, M.D., who is a vascular surgeon, and Susan Tyberski, executive director of the Elmhurst Hospital Foundation. On Friday, December 4, Mastro threw the switch to light all the trees along the promenade in front of the hospital in what was a beautiful spectacle.

These three beautiful dogs are pictured with their handlers at the Love Lights reception held on December 4 at Elmhurst Hospital. The animals are specially trained to provide therapy to disabled patients in the hospital’s care. Besides being trained in therapy, the dogs are absolutely beautiful.

unners, walkers and bikers on the Prairie Path are treated to an eight-block stretch of native prairie in western Elmhurst, thanks to the longtime efforts of Elmhurst resident Keith Olson. The Great Western Prairie stretches from Spring Road west to Salt Creek, just north of the Prairie Path. “The land was between two railroad tracks and it wasn’t wide enough to develop so it stayed a prairie,” Keith said. “It’s the oldest living thing in Elmhurst and has been there since the ice ages about 10,000 years ago. It’s a living museum.” The six-acre space is owned primarily by DuPage County but the Elmhurst Park District has a contract to maintain it. “It works out really well,” he said. “The county is happy not to have to send mowers. We are on very good terms with the DuPage County Forest Preserve and they always include our cleanups on their list of events.” Back in the 1970’s Keith was instrumental in getting the space designated as a natural area. “I’ve always been interested in nature and love the north woods in Wisconsin and the national parks,” he said. “So there were some public hearings in the late 1970’s about this space and I got involved. The key first step was preserving what’s there. We like to talk about preservation rather than restoration because it’s always been there.” Keith has taken the lead in organizing monthly volunteer workdays on behalf of the Elmhurst Park

District. Crews of volunteers come from schools, Scout groups, churches, businesses and community organizations. The turnout ranges from a few people to 63 once this year. “A York teacher named Dustin Felix sends us a lot of his AP students,” he said. “Whole Foods employees came out to do a project. We have Scout groups. And I have an email list that I send to people who might want to volunteer. For many years it was postcards but email is faster.” Each month they tackle projects like weeding out tree growth and invasive species. Because trees surround the space, the volunteers are vigilant about ensuring that tree seeds don’t take root in the prairie. Anyone in the community is welcome to drop in and volunteer the third Saturday of each

month (except December through February) and can call Pat O’Neil at the Elmhurst Park District at (630) 993-8900 for details. Key to the prairie’s success is a burn that Keith supervises each spring. “We burn the whole area to get ride of non-native plants,” he said. “Two-thirds of the native plants are below ground and nicely protected by the soil. They are adapted to come back after fire but the nonnatives are not. It destroys a prairie not to burn it.” The Great Western Prairie includes the Shooting Star Trail, named for a flower that is plentiful in the spring. Visitors can follow a map with 16 trail markers, each featuring a native plant with a drawing and information about the best viewing time. The path includes a wide variety of native species such as Big Blue Stem, Indian Grass, Rattlesnake Master, and Prairie Dock. Keith occasionally shares seeds with other communities if Elmhurst has excess. This year he shared Carolina Rose and Spiderwort. Keith has a science background and taught chemistry at York, but has taught himself most of what he knows about prairies. “I took one class in college in field biology but it was non-prairie. Every year I learn something different – common names, technical names – and it’s mostly from reading and listening to people and occasionally attending prairie conferences.” In addition to his prairie expertise, Keith has recently become a student of movie theaters. He purchased a gift membership to the Elmhurstbased Theatre Historical Society of America and published his first article, “Theaters of New Mexico” in the Q3 2015 issue of the Society’s “Marquee” magazine. Keith and his wife now live in a condo on York but first moved to Elmhurst in the 1960’s and lived for many years on Berkeley, just a block and a half from the Great Western Prairie.

The Second Best Real Estate Value in Elmhurst... The second best real estate value in Elmhurst, in our opinion. We bought this house in February of 2015 with the idea of downsizing (2790 sq ft). It is one of only fourteen single family homes in the private Prairie Manor association in central Elmhurst. You will need two steps to enter the main floor (unlike some of the newer homes offered in Elmhurst) where you will find a great room with a cathedral ceiling and fire place. The great room opens to the kitchen and dining area. There is a private deck off the dining area for grilling and enjoying your favorite wine. In addition, still on the first floor, there is a powder room, den, master suite and laundry room. You could live your whole life on the main level. The second floor has two bedrooms, a full bath, and a “bonus” room over the garage we call Grandpa’s room, where Grandpa gets sent to watch the Golf Channel. The basement is huge and dry and stores not only our downsized possessions but also our three kids’ extras. The association takes care of snow plowing and lawn maintenance (which is wonderful).

Timothy Christian boys basketball team opens conference season Trojans’ girls basketball team defeats Guerin Prep By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The Timothy Christian boys basketball team opened the Metro Suburban Conference East Division portion of its schedule with a 60-31 loss to Illiana Christian in Lansing. Illiana led 16-4 after the first quarter and 32-14 at halftime. Ben Lodewyk led the Trojans with 11 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 effort from the freethrow line. Trayvon Williams added six points, four rebounds and three steals. Jared Rhiner and Joey Davidson each had four rebounds, while Josh Caver and Jonny Strube each had two blocked shots. Timothy shot 9-for-55 from the field and 1-for-18 from the 3-point line, while accumulating 13 steals on defense. The

loss dropped the Trojans to 2-3 overall. In earlier action, the Trojans concluded play in the Lisle tournament with a 47-45 loss to Chicago University High. Timothy led 19-15 at halftime, but trailed 36-31 after three quarters. The Trojans came back to tie the game at 45-45 on a late 3-pointer by Davidson. University High then hit two free throws with eight seconds left for the final margin. The Trojans missed a shot at the buzzer. Lodewyk led Timothy with 22 points. He also earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Timothy Christian girls basketball The Timothy Christian girls basketball team split a pair of recent games. The Trojans dropped a 48-24 Metro Suburban Conference East Division game to Illiana Christian. “We didn’t play horrible, but we struggled to score,” said Timothy coach Michele Strube. Timothy rebounded to record a 61-26 MSC East victory against Guerin Prep.

Youthful York girls basketball team showing positive signs Sophomores Rufus and Dennis leading Dukes in scoring By Mike Miazga

ELMHURST — The York girls basketball team started the season going 3-3 in its first six games.
But that record doesn’t tell the true story of the team’s start out of the gates.
The Dukes scored a recent win against Prospect to finish second in their own Thanksgiving tournament and then dropped a recent five-point decision (36-31) to Proviso West in their West Suburban Conference Silver Division opener.
“Those three losses are by two possessions each,” said York coach John Constable.

“We lost to Downers by four, Niles by four and Proviso by five. And in every one of those games at some point in the second half we had a lead.”
Constable liked how the team looked on defense in the loss to Proviso. “I thought we were extremely prepared in that game,” he said. “It might have been one of the best defensive efforts to this point. We only allowed 36 points and they came in averaging more than 50 points. But we left 10 points at the free-throw line and we had a couple critical mental mistakes and turned the ball over late in the game. That really swayed things. We also had some open looks that didn’t fall. We were right there in a position to win. It was tough offensively, but on the defensive end I thought we

York boys basketball team off to strong start
Dukes win conference opener; also play well in Palatine tournament By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — After a good start to the season at the Palatine tournament, the York boys basketball team picked up right where it left off.
The Dukes recorded a 68-52 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win at home against defending league champion Lyons Township. It was the home opener for York.
The win moved York to 4-1 overall.
The Lyons Township win follows York’s 3-1 performance at the Palatine Thanksgiving tournament.
 At Palatine, York opened

play with a 79-47 victory over Chicago Tilden. York led 18-9 after the first quarter and 35-25 at halftime. York outscored Tilden 19-12 in the third quarter and 25-10 in the fourth quarter.
Nick Trapani led the Dukes with 14 points (two 3-pointers). Jack Julian had 11 points and four steals. Jack Morrissey had 12 points (two 3-pointers), four steals and shot 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Patrick Grabowski had nine points and seven rebounds, while Ryan Camp had eight points and five assists. Rich George finished with nine points (4-for-4 free throws). Jordan Gray had six rebounds. York made seven 3-pointers and had 17 steals in the contest.
The Dukes then dropped a 66-55 game to Deerfield. York led 18-9 after the first quarter and 26-23 at halftime. Deerfield outscored York 20-11 in the third quarter and 23-18 in the fourth.
Trapani led the Dukes with 21 points, which

}The tournament went real well for us. We got better as the tournament went along.” — York coach Vice Doran included a 7-for-10 night at the 3-point line. Morrissey had 11 points and six assists. Grabowski had six points, as did Nick Kosich. Camp and Julian each had four assists. York made 13 threepointers in the game and shot 50 percent from the 3-point line.
York rebounded to record a 68-50 win over Rolling Meadows. York led 14-4 after the first quarter and 29-19 at halftime. York used a 23-12 third quarter to further pull away.
Morrissey led the Dukes with 15 points. Trapani had nine points, while Julian had eight points and six assists. Angelo Martucci had seven points, as did Kosich. George also had seven

points, while Grabowski had six points and five rebounds. Camp had four assists. York made eight 3-pointers, had 13 steals and shot 54.6 percent from the field.
The Dukes wrapped up the tournament with a 56-39 win over Palatine. York trailed 13-11 after one quarter and led 28-27 at halftime. An 18-1 run in the third quarter gave the Dukes more breathing room.
Morrissey led York with 14 points and four assists. Grabowski had 13 points, while George finished with nine points. Trapani chipped in with seven points. York shot 54.1 percent from the field and made seven 3-pointers.

ting an example for the rest of the team. It is with their leadership and example that the other girls are learning.” Newcomers to the team include juniors Jessica Cwik and Juliana Gescey, along with sophomores Lauren Gould and Carly Laurx. York is coming off a 2014-2015 season where it won the West Suburban Con-

ference title and advanced to the state meet as a team. “This is a mentally tough team,” said Schroeder. “They know how to dig in when things get difficult during a tournament and work hard to pull themselves back out when they are struggling. They don’t give up.” Schroeder noted while York may not have a lot of varsity experience, it does have important intangibles such as dedication and hard work. “We’re a young team this year, but they are working hard in practice to get better at one thing every day,” she said. “With that kind of dedication we will see a lot of improvement by the end of the season. We are making changes to the bowlers as a whole to make sure we are following the same program and style of bowling. With consistency we should see very positive results.” Gould and Laurx are two sophomores who are showing promise in the early going. “Lauren and Carly are very athletic and are working very hard to make changes to get better. Neither one had ever done bowling before joining last year. They have a lot of raw talent that we are working on polishing up.” Schroeder also is once again thrilled with the team’s chemistry. “We always have really nice girls on the team,” she said. “They are genuinely kind to one another and support

shot 49.1 percent from the field and hit 35 of 76 three-point attempts (46.1 percent).
Morrissey was named to the alltournament team at Palatine.
“The tournament went real well for us,” said York coach Vince Doran. “We got better as the tournament went along. Our younger kids are gaining experience each game. It was nice to get four games in. I thought we played really well offensively, but we are not where we need to be on defense at this point. But our defense continues to get better each game.”
Doran was impressed with Morrissey’s play in the tournament as well as Camp’s. “Ryan Camp did a lot of things well for us,” said Doran. “Our seniors are stepping up and doing what we expect seniors to do. This was a very good start for us. We know we have a tough road ahead of us and we’ll have to come out ready to play in every game we play.”

Senior captains lead the way for York girls bowling team Campo, Baubly return with state experience By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — Senior leadership is paramount on any var-

sity high school athletic team. And the York girls bowling team certainly has that covered. The Dukes are led this year by senior captains Dana Campo and Emma Baubly. “They are the leaders on the team and have been to the state meet before,” said York coach Katie Schroeder. “They know what it takes to get there and are set-

IC Catholic Prep boys bowling team showing early-season improvements Shuflit and Slowinski notch personal records By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The IC Catholic Prep boys bowling team made strides in three early-season contests.
The Knights lost to Chicago Christian in their season-opener, but were missing two returning bowlers from the varsity lineup.
At the Plainfield North invitational, the Knights increased their pin counts in each of the six games they bowled. At Plainfield North, Tim Shuflit improved on his personal record.
In a meet against Elgin St. Edward, the IC Catholic Prep varsity team lost a close contest, but the Knights’ junior-varsity team recorded a victory. CJ Slowinski improved upon his personal record in the St. Edward meet.
In addition to Shuflit, a junior, the Knights also return seniors Joe Pecoraro, Nick Slowinski and Dillon McMahon, along with sophomore Vince Cerasuolo.
Slowinski, a sophomore, and freshman Amber Lewis are key newcomers to the team for new Knights head coach Sarah Palandri.
“We have a good mix of returners and new-

comers to the team,” she said. “Our returners do a good job of working well with and teaching those new to the sport, as well as keeping up team morale.”
Palandri said recent practices have proven beneficial. “They have improved upon their focus during our practices and working on the drills,” she said. “The results are shown in better overall pin counts from last year and more consistency within a game.”
Palandri has been impressed thus far with the efforts of Shuflit and Slowinski in particular. “Tim already has broken his personal record in our first invitational,” she said. “CJ is new to the program, but has been making huge strides with his consistency. He’s the most improved in just these few weeks.”
Palandri also likes the team dynamic that is in play. “I like the diversity of the group,” she said. “We have one female bowler (Lewis) and she never is left out and is fully embraced by the team. We also have students from every grade level represented and no one grade level is separated.”
As far as goals for the season, Palandri would like to see the team achieve several milestones. “Goals for the season are to get a varsity win this season, improve our pin counts for those matches against state-bound teams and have bowlers qualify for sectionals.”

— York coach Katie Schroeder each other. It’s a constant with this program. We have a lot of competitors on this team. They have a desire to do well and to win and it keeps them focused and working hard every day in practice.” Schroeder said the goal once again is to get to the state meet as a team. “Our goal always will be the same--to get back to the state meet,” she said. “Because we are young and growing our focus is not on where we start but where we finish.” York opened the season at the Plainfield Central invitational. “We had a rough start, but we finished strong and saw a lot of positives.”

That certainly is the case for York senior softball player Gabby Magnifico, who is headed to Valparaiso University in Indiana to continue her career next year.
My best friend (Oak Park-River Forest’s Emily Richardson) and I play travel softball together (last year for the Oak Park Windmills, this upcoming season for the Wasco Diamonds) and she is going to Valpo as well,” said Magnifico. “We both got recruited and we both made the decision to go there. We both had good opportunities.”
Magnifico didn’t need her arm twisted in choosing Valparaiso. “The school as a whole has a vibe that is so awesome,” she said. “The softball coach is awesome. They are building up the program and that’s exactly what I was looking for.”
Magnifico said she first became acquainted with the school after attending a camp there. It was one of many college camps

York’s Gunst to continue golf career at Division I Mercer By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — York senior boys golfer Will Gunst found himself a great situation.
He is referring to Division I Mercer University in Macon, Ga.. That’s where he will continue his golfing career next fall. Gunst recently signed his National Letter of Intent to attend the school.
“It’s a great situation for me,” he said. “The school is in Georgia where they have great weather. I also can get in there and play if I can play well enough. There were some other schools out there that maybe I could have gotten into but I might not play the first couple years. I really love the coach. He’s a very nice guy. It’s a great school that is very good academically. The school overall was a great fit for me. I went down there for a visit and I liked the school and the coach.”
Gunst is thrilled to have the opportunity to play at the Division I college level. “It’s awesome,” he said. “It was definitely a goal of mine throughout my high-school and junior career. It definitely was a goal but to get scholarship money is a great bonus.”
Gunst admitted making the decision was a big relief. “During the summer it was kind of a stressful process,” he said.

“I didn’t have a real idea where I was going to school. Once highschool season kicked in, things started to fall into place. It was a relief to get it off my shoulders. It’s not on my mind. I can play golf without any worries.”
Gunst isn’t resting on his laurels simply because he has a college destination chosen. “The coach at Mercer wants me to play in amateur tournaments,” he said. “I’m practicing every day to get better so I hopefully will be prepared when I go down there. I’m still working on my game. I’m going to the dome at White Pines (in Bensenville) and I’m doing a program at Carriage Greens where you work on your game as well.”
Gunst has fond memories of his time in the York program. He was part of the 2014 and 2015 teams that qualified for the Class 3A state tournament. “I am fortunate to have been on a very competitive team all four years,” he said. “I played with Jordan Less (headed to Northern Illinois University to play golf) for four years and he is a great player. We were competitive and successful. To make state twice in a row is a big accomplishment, especially for a program that hadn’t been there in a half century. It was nice to put our names out there and hopefully that tradition goes forward at York.”

therapy and even work with little kids in pediatrics,” she said.
Back on the field, Magnifico played second and shortstop

for the Dukes as a junior after playing the outfield her first two years. Valparaiso, she said, recruited her as a utility player. “I will go in there and play wherever they want me to play,” she said. “This is my dream. Since I was a little kid I wanted to play Division I softball. Now it is a reality. It’s basically a dream come true.”
Besides softball, Magnifico used to be a tumbler. “I tumbled on the side. That was before I tore my ACL in softball. I had to stop,” she said.
Magnifico hurt her knee in York’s last regular-season game a year ago. “I should get cleared to play again in two weeks,” she said earlier last week.
Magnifico was part of a 2015 York team that won 27 games and advanced to the sectional championship. “Last year was one of the best years we’ve had in York history,” she said. “That’s pretty awesome.”
Magnifico has been playing the sport for more than a decade. In fact, baseball and softball are a family affair for Magnifico, who noted her dad played baseball, while mom played softball. Her brother also plays baseball. “I love the competitiveness of softball,” she said. “And you get to meet a lot of wonderful people through the game. I fell in love with softball as a young girl. Softball always has been in my life.”

• GIRLS

Continued from page 23 were very good. I think Proviso West is going to shock our conference with some of the talent they have. They are pretty good.”
Constable said the team’s overall preparedness this season has paid dividends. “We have an understanding of who we are and what our responsibilities are,” he said. “We have the ability to help each other with rotations and to be where we are supposed to be. Every game we’ve had a different strategy and scouting report based on the opponent’s personnel and the girls have been able to adjust and take those adjustments and make them work. Against Proviso we played at a much faster pace and were able to execute things that we haven’t had a chance to work on much and that helped us get turnovers and got us back in the game and put us in a position to win the game. And on the defensive side I’m impressed with the way we’ve picked up on things.”
On the individual side, junior point guard Jackie Saco has enjoyed a strong start to the season. “She has done a particularly good job handling the ball and not turning it over,” said Constable. “She distributes the ball well and calms us down and gets us into our offense. I’ve been very pleased with the way she has handled herself. Against Proviso they pressured us from start to finish and Jackie did a tremendous job. I couldn’t be more pleased.”
Out of the gates, York has been led in scoring and rebounding by a pair of sophomores. Danielle Dennis was averaging 8.0 points and 8.0 rebounds through the first six games. “Danielle has been outstanding,” said Constable. “She had 17 points and 10 rebounds

— York coach John Constable against Prospect. She’s had a great start to the season.”
Caylin Rufus is the team’s leading scorer at 10 points a game and is the second-leading rebounder on the team at 7.0 rebounds. “With Caylin and Danielle I’m encouraged to see that type of production from them. They are going to get even better as the year goes on.”
Kelly Polte, the team’s only returning starter, returned to action after being sidelined by illness to start the season.
“It’s outstanding to have Kelly back,” said Constable.
Megan Backman, the team’s leading returning scorer, underwent knee surgery recently, Constable said. “She might get back at some point this season,” he added.
Looking at the overall body of work through six games, Constable is happy with where his group is at. “The games we’ve lost have been by a couple possessions,” he said. “None of the girls that are seeing a lot of minutes saw a lot of time last year. I’m thrilled where we are. In all of those games we were in a position to win. That bodes well as we move forward. When we identify who we are on the offensive end and that catches up to where we are defensively, we have the potential to be a very good team. We’re going to keep working at it.”
Rufus was named to the York Thanksgiving all-tournament team.

The York girls gymnastics team recently participated in the “10 for 10” campaign for a local Holiday Gift Mart.

Under the leadership of team captains Justine O’Leary and Anilu Rios, York gymnasts collected and donated more than 100 gifts for needy families. In addition, they made 50 ornaments to be handed out at the Gift

Mart sponsored by Mission Church. “The girls liked this particular organization because they don’t just give gifts to needy families,” said York coach Tammy Henderson. “Instead, a Holiday Mart is set up

where parents can come in and choose their own present for their child and buy it for just a few dollars instead of at retail prices. As a coach I was very touched not only by their generosity, but by the empathy and concern that many of them had for families that have such need.”

Forest High School. For the Dukes, the evening was a huge success both on and off the ice. In addition to recording victories by both the varsity and junior varsity teams, York teamed up with OPRF for a very successful toy collection to benefit local families. Since 2009, the York Hockey Club has collected new toys to share with under-privileged children throughout the community during the holiday season. The club collected approximately 1,000 toys as part of this year’s event. “Toys for Tots is a wonderful program and we are so pleased to be able to give back to our community,” said Jessica Gatti, York Hockey Club President. “This is another way this hockey season that our players have stepped up as leaders off the ice.” York Hockey Club players made donations on their own and solicited support and donations from family members and friends. More than 25 volunteers from the York Hockey Club aided in setting up and running the single event col-

lection. In total, toy donations were collected from more than 80 families and businesses. In a true showing of sportsmanship, the OPRF players, families and coaches made donations to the York Hockey Club’s effort. York players and families responded in-kind with donations of non-perishable food items for the Huskies’ to distribute to local food banks as part of the OPRF Hockey Checks Hunger program. “It is special to see two opposing clubs come together in their generosity for causes like these,” said senior defenseman Trevor Corsello. “These programs really are bigger than the games we played on the ice.” The Dukes proved to be more generous in their philanthropic endeavors than they were as hosts to their league opponents. In the opener, York’s junior varsity team ran its league record to a perfect 15-0-0 with a 2-1 victory. York jumped out to an early lead on a goal by junior Anthony Trankina before the Huskies tied the game in the second

period. The game remained knotted until junior Matt Davis scored with about two minutes left to save the win for York. In the finale, York’s varsity squad shutout Oak Park River Forest 2-0 behind the 20 save effort of senior goalie Jack Buckley. The Dukes’ goals came off the sticks of senior Ryan Pedote and junior Michael Rouzer. York Hockey Club returns to the ice on Friday, December 11th when Lyons Township will visit the Addison Ice Arena. For more details visit www.yorkhockeyclub.org.

Displayed salon style and entirely filling the walls of the Founders Lounge in the Frick Center, the art represented in this show demonstrates the full range of media produced by art students, including paintings, drawings, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design and digital art. “This exhibition is a great overview of the work done by students taking art courses either as an art major, a fine art requirement or an elective,” said Elmhurst College Exhibitions Director Suellen Rocca. “I like the very inclusive nature of the exhibition, in which we try to show a work by each student who has participated in an art class this semester.” The show runs through Friday, Dec.

18 in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center (190 S. Prospect Ave., Elmhurst, elmhurst.edu/campusmap). The Frick Center is open days and evenings. The show is free and the public is welcome. The Fall Student Art Exhibition is one of roughly a dozen shows that Elmhurst College will present this academic year in three campus venues. The college also exhibits more than 100 works in its Student Art Collection, which features selected exemplary work purchased from graduating seniors. The collection is on permanent display on the third floor and lower level of the A.C. Buehler Library. The library also is home to the College’s unparalleled collection of Chicago Imagist and Abstractionist Art, which explores the vibrant, often outrageous, yet precisely crafted works of Chicago artists between 1950 and the present. The collection is displayed throughout the library’s first floor and lower vestibule. The exhibits are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Suellen Rocca at (630) 617-6110 or srocca@elmhurst.edu.

ICGS 6th graders explore ancient civilizations at University of Chicago Last month, 6th-grade students from Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst enjoyed a firsthand look at artifacts from ancient civilizations they have been studying in social studies class. The students toured the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, founded in 1919 by James Henry Breasted with the financial support of John D. Rockefeller Jr. Pictured are ICGS 6th graders standing

in front of the most spectacular object in the Mesopotamian collection — the 16-foot tall, 40-ton, human-headed winged bull (lamassu). The lamussu, which includes an image of King Sargon, was excavated by the Oriental Institute between 1928 and 1935 at Sargon’s capital city DurSharrukin (modern Khorsabad).

State budget struggles cause cuts to senior meals program Without $700,000 due from Springfield, County must close sites

LOMBARD — Due to the ongoing State of Illinois budget difficulties, the DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC) will be forced to reduce its home delivered meals/“Meals on Wheels” and Community Dining programs in January, leaving thousands of DuPage County seniors without a safety net. Beginning January 11, 2016, DSCC will be forced to close its eight Community Dining sites and to reduce “Meals on Wheels” delivery to Mondays and Thursdays only. Each year, approximately $700,000 from the Illinois General Revenue Fund is specifically committed to homedelivered meals for vulnerable seniors in DuPage County. The State of Illinois has been operating without a budget since July 1 and DSCC has not received this funding. The agency has been using reserve dollars and other funding to keep the

“Meals on Wheels” program running. However, these funds are now exhausted and DSCC can no longer operate this program at full capacity. “It is heartbreaking to have to scale back our Meals on Wheels operation,” said Executive Director Marylin Krolak. “For the past seven months, we have been able to cover the costs of this program, but we can simply no longer do so. We hope our state legislators resolve this situation as soon as possible so that DSCC can resume operating our “Meals on Wheels” program at full capacity, and restore our Community Dining program which is suffering indirectly.” With the help of hundreds of devoted volunteers, DSCC’s Well-Being Check program will continue to operate five days a week, to ensure seniors their safety and health. Donations to support DSCC and the “Meals on Wheels” program can be made through DSCC’s website at dupageseniorcouncil.org or call 630620-0804 for more information.

Free hospital program targets prevention of type 2 diabetes ELMHURST — EdwardElmhurst Health is offering Jumpstart Your Health to help community members make lasting changes to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 37 percent of U.S. adults (51 percent of those 65 and older) have a condition called pre-diabetes, which means a person’s blood glucose (sugar) level is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. However, it may lead to type 2 diabetes, which can cause heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and circulatory problems. A person may have pre-diabetes if they: • Are 45 years of age or older; • Are overweight; • Have a family history of type 2 diabetes; • Are physically active fewer than three times per week; • Had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes) or gave birth to a baby that weighed more than nine pounds. Jumpstart Your Health is a

year-long program that incorporates lifestyle changes to help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. The program stresses weight loss and moderate physical activity, which has proven successful in preventing or delaying diabetes in people who have or are at risk for pre-diabetes. The program will be offered at several locations beginning in January. There is no fee for participants thanks to support from the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation and grant funding from the Lions Club International Foundation, Lions District 1-J and Elmhurst Lions Club. The program is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention effort.

To learn if you qualify for this program, Elmhurst Hospital will offer free pre-diabetes screenings, starting in January. For more information and screening days/times, call (331) 221-0429. If you’ve already been told by your physician that you have prediabetes, call (331) 221-0429.

BLOOMINGTON — Elmhurst resident Maggie Patchett recently starred in the Illinois Wesleyan University School of Theatre Arts production of Blown Youth, a play by Dipika Guha. Blown Youth offers a twist on the classic Shakespearian drama Hamlet by putting a woman at the center of the world. Main character Celia and her friends attempt to create a perfect community of young women, yet their utopian vision soon starts to fray as the women’s bonds of friendship unravel. Illinois Wesleyan’s production marked the Midwest debut of Blown Youth. Patchett is a senior, majoring in theatre arts. At Illinois Wesleyan, she has also appeared in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and the lab theatre production of Problem Child. She did an internship at Lifeline Theatre in Chicago.
