Younger special needs students will transfer to Emerson

By Dan McLeister For The Elmhurst Independent

ELMHURST — Responding to parents’ concerns, District 205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer said students in the upper primary grades at Field Elementary School will be allowed to continue there until

they complete fifth grade and are ready for middle school. The administration’s previous plan was to transfer all special needs students from Field to Emerson Elementary in the coming school year. At a January 26th meeting, Moyer indicated that the Board of Education had authorized the funds necessary to pay staff for the next three years to accommodate this request. The previous evening, the administration hosted a meeting at Field with parents of

students with special needs in grades 3 - 5. Administrators called parents of students in K - 2 to tell them that students in those grades will move to Emerson next year. A date has not yet been set for an informational meeting to explain to those connected with Field School (parents and staff) the various space constraints expected over the next few years related to programs. “The thing to remember is that the issue is fluid,” Moyer

stated. “We can only give out information that is available now. We don’t know all of the information now about what could happen about enrollment projections. At this point we will anticipate that space issues will continue. “We will make it work and we will complete a phased approach and commit to the staffing required for the input we received from parents.” School Board President Shannon Ebner commented that, “We are moving quickly

tonight.” On January 12th much of the discussion in a four and a half hour meeting was spent on the special needs students. Initial consideration of the transfer began in July of 2014. Former Dist. 205 Superintendent Dave Pruneau had said that consideration needed to be given to moving the special needs classrooms before changing attendance boundaries to address expanding enrollment and space needs at Field.

ELMHURST — The City of Elmhurst announced last week that the largest stormwater project since the early 1990s is scheduled to begin on February 8, 2016. The Walnut/Myrtle/Evergreen Stormwater Improvement Project will entail the construction of a series of storm sewer pipes along various streets and a drainage outfall to the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control facility. It will provide 20 acrefeed of overland flood relief to 76 homes located in the Walnut/ Myrtle/Evergreen area, adjacent to the quarry. The estimated cost of the project is approximately $4.5 million. In the 1990s, following the flood in August 1987, the City and DuPage County implemented the Elmhurst levee and Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility projects to protect Elmhurst residents in the event Salt Creek overflowed its banks again, as it did in 1987. The City has retained Bolder Contractors, Inc., of Cary, Ill., for this project. The construction of the new large diameter storm sewer will provide addition relief to the existing storm

ELMHURST — Police Chief Michael Ruth has recommended the use of three license plate readers (LPR) to apprehend, deter and prevent criminal activity from occurring within Elmhurst. The Police Department recently had the opportunity to use three LPRs on a trial basis and the results were positive, according to Ruth. Based on historical crime trends, Ruth said common escape route locations are: St. Charles eastbound at Fair;

North Ave. eastbound at Clinton; York Street eastbound between Industrial and Lake Street. Ruth said only three locations were chosen for recommendation because the LPRs are quite costly, projected at approximately $40,000 for the three locations. The costs could be paid from Asset Forfeiture Funds (obtained from selling assets seized from criminals). He also said there would not be white strobe lights to indicate LPR location like there are in Chicago. The LPR recommendation will be discussed at a future City Council meeting. At a meeting of the Public Affairs and Safety (PAS) Committee on January 25, Ruth

reported that a trial period produced significant, measurable and proven success in identifying and helping to apprehend suspects responsible for criminal activity that occurred in and around Elmhurst. Examples include home burglary and auto theft. Alderman Chris Healy (5th Ward), chairman of the PAS Committee, said safeguards would prevent any “Big Brother watching” concerns some people might have. He said the only information obtained was what any person standing on a street corner would get by writing down license plate numbers. Healy noted that the LPR would not be used to determine if a motorist had a City sticker. Ruth said there is no identifi-

able personal information contained in a license plate capture. He said the data on the hosted server could only be accessed by authorized law enforcement officers with a valid Originating Agency Identifier number issued by the Criminal Justice System of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Ruth noted that a license plate reader is used at O’Hare Airport. Other municipalities using LPRs, according to Ruth, are Darien, Downers Grove, Elgin, Franklin Park, Hickory Hills, Lombard, Naperville, Skokie and Wilmette. Other agencies include Illinois State Police, Chicago Drug Enforcement Agency, Chicago FBI, Kane County Sheriff and U.S. Customs Service.

Here’s what’s going on at the Elmhurst Park District ELMHURST — The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on Jan. 27 at the district’s administrative building at 375 W. First Street. Commissioners Doug Ennis and Anthony Pelosi were absent from the meeting. There were no comments from the public at the meeting. Board discusses sale of G.O. bonds Board members voted unanimously to approve the district’s timeline for the 2016 sale of general obligation bonds. Christi Jacobson, the district’s director of finance and human resources, noted the timeline of the plans for nearly $660,000 in general obligation bonds (principal and interest). More than half of that amount (about $345,000) will be allocated for 2016 capital projects. The remaining amount of nearly $315,000 will be used for interest on debt. Jacobson said that the timeline calls for the district to receive the bond proceeds on Aug. 1 and pay them off on Nov. 16. She said the short issue time of three and a half months has discouraged some banks from submitting quotes. Last year, the district reportedly contacted about 15 banks regarding bids for general obligation bonds. The district received one quote. Contractor chosen for Greenway Trail connection Board members voted

unanimously to contract with TERRA Engineering, Ltd. for Phase 3 construction engineering of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail connection. Executive Director Jim Rogers explained that David Landeweer, who has been the district’s Salt Creek Greenway Trail project engineer since 1998, recently left his current firm and joined TERRA Engineering, Ltd. District staff recommended contracting with TERRA to retain Landeweer’s experience historical knowledge. Angela Ferrentino, the district’s director of parks and facilities, stated that Landeweer has a proven track record with the district for nearly 20 years. Federal grant helps fund Greenway project Commissioners also voted unanimously to approve a resolution committing the district’s matching funds for the trail connection project, which calls for the installation of a 360-foot long by 8-foot wide asphalt trail connection, south of Butterfield Road. In 2010 the district was awarded nearly $500,000 in Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) grant funding. The federal grant, which is managed by the state, reimburses recipients for up to 80 percent of a project’s costs. The estimated cost to the district for Phase 3 engineering and construction is about $90,000. The grant funding will reportedly cover the remaining amount of more

than $363,000. Rogers stated that the 360foot trail connection will eliminate a potentially hazardous route for bicyclists. The current route requires trail users to ride toward oncoming traffic on the shoulder of Brush Hill Road. He noted that the process of building the connection has been delayed because of disputes between adjacent property owners in the area. Rogers and Ferrentino said the district is hoping to begin the project in April. Rogers explains dispute with City over shutoff valve The portion of the meeting dedicated to storm water management included a summary of the Jan. 14 subcommittee meeting at Elmhurst City Hall that included representatives from the park district and the city. Rogers stated that the district and the city have a philosophical difference regarding the requirement of a shutoff valve at the proposed detention basin at York Commons. Rogers said the park district remains firm in its position that a valve be included at the site. He reiterated that position when he spoke during the public comment segment of the Elmhurst City Council’s Jan. 18 meeting. The proposed basin at York Commons will reportedly be provide 10 acre feet of storage of storm water and alleviate flooding of nearly 40 homes on Crescent Avenue. A 48-inch pipe would direct storm water into the basin.

Rogers said the park district received a letter from the city on Jan. 26 that summarized the city’s position, which questions the need for a shutoff valve at the proposed York Commons site. Greg Wolterstorff, an engineer for V3 Companies, briefly addressed the questions at the Jan. 27 board meeting. Wolterstorff and Rogers both noted that V3 has not conducted its own modeling of York Commons and is basing its findings on information provided by the Christopher Burke Engineering—a firm the city has utilized for storm water studies. Rogers stated that the park district hired V3 Companies to conduct a peer review of Burke’s findings and not to conduct its own city-wide studies. Commissioner Vince Spaeth, who also noted that the park district’s decisions are based on information provided by the city and Christopher Burke Engineering, stated he feels good about the district’s demand for a shutoff valve at the proposed York Commons site. Spaeth and Wolterstorff also stated that a shutoff valve at the site would not be as complicated as the existing pumps the city already uses to manage floodwaters along Salt Creek. The storm water subcommittee will hold its next meeting on Feb. 18. The park district board will hold its next meeting on Feb. 10.

Only local traffic will be allowed on closed streets. The contractor will be install-

On a daily basis, there will be a significant amount of truck traffic that will haul excavated materials, haul in stone or sand backfill, and deliver large concrete pipe and precast structures. The construction area will start at First St. and Highland Ave. moving east to Myrtle, then north on Myrtle to Second St., east on Second to Evergreen Ave., and north on Evergreen to Third St. The storm sewer improvement will end at the intersection of Third and Evergreen. The City will post updates periodically to keep residents informed on construction progress, road closures, and other items on the Walnut/Myrtle/ Evergreen Stormwater Improvement Project blog as part of the City’s new web site at elmhurststormwaterplan.org.

Cats don’t take orders from humans I

have two cats, or better put, they have me. Cats aren’t actually owned by humans. It’s a fallacy perpetuated by dogs that delight in being owned and coming when they’re called. My cats grace me with their presence when they want, not when I call. They strut through the house with the dignity of royalty. Never mind they were both abandoned as kittens. One was found in a cardboard box on the side of the road, the other wandering the parking lot of a home improvement store. Technically, they have humble roots and should be thankful we took them in and provided a warm spot for their naps. But they know nothing of technicalities or humility. They are cats. And as such, they are assured, without any hint of a doubt, they are the supreme beings of our domicile, the plan-

et, and most likely the entire universe. They possess powers and authority incomprehensible to mere humans. Not only that, they may want to kill us. Cat research made the news recently when a study compared domestic cats to larger cats in the wild saying both breeds have strong characteristics related to dominance, impulsiveness and neuroticism. And, both are predators with an instinct to hunt and eat their kill. Some researchers concluded that our cats would

kill us, if only they could. Trouble is, we’re too big. So although cats are smarter and better than humans in every way possible, in this case, size does matter. In addition to their extremely honed balance, super-kinetic jumping skills and other worldly hunting abilities (among countless additional attributes) my cats are telepathic. At various times of the day – at their choosing – they sit atop a perch on the cabinet directly in front of the TV and stare with the tenacity and intensity of Spock doing a mind meld. This is because I think they are attempting a mind meld by telepathically sending the message, “Give me all the catnip, simple worthless human.” Unfortunately, as a simple human, I am not as evolved as the feline species and as such have not yet mastered the skill

of telepathy. I can only guess what they desire because when I get up to fetch a cup of tea from the kitchen, they follow me greedily and alternate the death stare between their treat dish and yours truly. Which brings me to the most astounding and impressive fact about my elusive and elite felines. Despite their haughty temperament and persnickety demeanor, I’ve taught one of them to perform a cat trick. He doesn’t exactly perform on demand. He has to be in the right frame of mind and know it is time for his daily dose of nip. Then, and only then, he will shake hands. That’s right. My cat shakes hands. If I hadn’t witnessed the feat (or better put, paw) with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have thought it possible because as a general rule, my cats don’t

do anything I ask of them. They also don’t particularly like people pawing with their paws, which under normal circumstances would make shaking hands with a human a deplorable experience. It probably is deplorable. I never said my cat enjoys shaking his paw. I said he will do it – for the right price, or in this case cat treats. I’m sure there will come a time when his hatred for cat tricks overcomes his desire for treats. At that point he will probably give in to his cat instincts and attempt to kill me. For now, though, I still have the upper hand. Jill Pertler is an award-winning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Don’t miss a slice; follow the Slices of Life page on Facebook.

City announces changes to downtown parking areas

ELMHURST — There have been some recent changes to parking in the downtown area. With the Addison Avenue Parking Deck now open, City officials have started the rollout of the Customer Only Parking initiative. The new Customer Only Parking limits parking spaces on a majority of streets throughout downtown to be reserved for customers only with a threehour parking limit. Employees and business owners will be unable to park in customer-only spaces and are encouraged to park in designated employee parking areas instead. The new Addison Avenue Parking Deck has designated employee parking space on the 5th and 7th floors, in addition to $2 daily fee spaces on the 6th floor. Part-time employees working less than 25 hours per week can obtain a special parking permit, which will allow them to park free on the 7th floor of the new deck and in the municipal parking lot located on the corner of Michigan and Elmhurst Avenue. Throughout the next few weeks, the staff of City Centre as well as the City will be notifying local businesses of these changes and will post appropriate signs throughout the area.

Four common diabetes myths debunked (StatePoint) Knowing the facts about diabetes is important for everyone, as living a healthy lifestyle can play a key role in helping to prevent and control the disease. To help, the Certified Diabetes Educators at Nutrisystem are debunking some common myths. Myth: I’m a healthy weight -- I can’t get diabetes. Truth: Although there is a clear connection between being overweight or obese and developing Type 2 diabetes, genetics and other lifestyle factors like diet can play a role as well. By maintaining a healthy weight, eating a nutritious, balanced diet and engaging in healthy habits like

regular exercise, you can decrease your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Myth: People develop diabetes because they eat too much sugar. Truth: Consuming excess calories (from sugary and non-sugary foods) can contribute to excess weight and obesity -- both of which are associated with Type 2 diabetes, but sugar is not the singular cause of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is the result of genetics and additional unknown factors, while Type 2 diabetes is the result of a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors. Healthy hint: Even if you only use sugar substitutes as sweeteners, consuming

excessive calories from other foods can still contribute to developing Type 2 diabetes. Myth: If I have diabetes, I have to follow a restrictive diet that includes no carbs and definitely no dessert. Truth: You might be surprised to learn that generally speaking, individuals with diabetes can follow the same healthy diet recommended for the general public -- one that includes lean proteins, non-starchy vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and fruit, and that minimizes saturated and trans fats, salt and sugar. Carbohydrates are an acceptable and necessary part of a healthy meal plan. However, pay attention to portion. Optimal carb counts vary, but the American Diabetes Association recommends starting with 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per meal, and tweaking depending on your body’s response. Some good carbs to consider include whole grain breads, pastas, rice and cereals, plus starchy vegetables like potatoes, peas and corn. Fruits, beans, milk and yogurt also count toward daily carbohydrates. Those with diabetes can also still enjoy sweet treats in small portions on special occasions. Myth: If my blood sugar doesn’t improve right after losing weight, it never will. Truth: It may take time for the body to adjust to the new way of eating. If you don’t see quick improvements, be patient. Also, stay in touch with your doctor since your medication or insulin may need to be adjusted. To make eating right a snap, consider following a structured meal plan like Nutrisystem D, which provides preportioned meals to help manage diabetes. More information can be found at www. Nutrisystem.com. Getting the formula right for a healthy lifestyle is not just an art, it’s a science -particularly if you have diabetes. Take steps to learn more about the disease and make positive lifestyle changes to support your health.

It’s a FOUR-PEAT for IC Catholic’s Dance Team Group heads to state championships Jan. 29-30

ELMHURST — For the fourth consecutive year, IC Catholic Prep (ICCP)’s Competitive Dance Team has secured a coveted spot at the IHSA State Championship for Competitive Dance taking place this Friday & Saturday, January 29 & 30 at the US Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. The preliminary rounds for Class 1A begins at 10:15 am on Friday, with finalists announced at approximately 1:00 pm. The top 10 teams will proceed to the state finals on Saturday. ICCP has a history of impressive dance results including winning multiple state championship titles through Team Dance Illinois (TDI). In 2012, the school won TDI’s State Title for Lyrical. Since Competitive Dance became officially recognized by the IHSA four years ago, the team has qualified for the IHSA state title each year, narrowly missing the finals in 2013. “This season’s FIRE routine has had exceptional results in competition and we feel strong going into the state championships,” says IC Catholic’s Head Coach, Elyse Skalka. The team is led by senior captains Claudia Koch, Maeve Gillette, and Clare Ryan, all of whom were named “All Conference” in 2016. In his speech before the audience at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting and Talent Showcase, Ralph Pechanio (pictured here, left) said he was honored to be joining a very exclusive “club” of the most outstanding people in the Elmhurst community. Not only has Pechanio been a tireless volunteer for the Chamber of Commerce, but also he has chaired the Veterans Committee and the Memorial Day Parade Committee, to name just a few of his efforts. He has recently rejoined the Chamber Board of Directors to serve as Treasurer. Pictured with him is Ken Bartels, who presented the award.

York boys’ basketball team goes 2-1 during recent three-game stretch Morrissey leads team in scoring against Hinsdale Central and Proviso West By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The York boys basketball team posted a 2-1 record during a recent stretch against three West Suburban Conference Silver Division opponents. York notched a 54-43 WSC Silver win against Lyons Township. York led 14-10 after the first quarter, 29-15 at halftime and 45-28 after three quarters. In earlier action, the Dukes downed Hinsdale Central by a 41-37 count. York trailed 12-10 after the fist quarter and 21-19 at halftime. But the Dukes used a 14-7 thirdquarter run to gain the lead. “It was a slower-paced game,” said York coach Vince Doran. “Both teams know each other so well. Points were at a premium for sure. All possessions were big. We had to cash in when we could because there were not a lot of opportunities at times.” Jack Morrissey led the Dukes with 13 points (2-for-3 three-point shooting). Jordan Gray added 12 points, while Nick Kosich had six points on two 3-pointers. Gray led the Dukes with six rebounds. Ryan Camp had four steals, while Morrissey had three steals. York shot 42.4 percent from the field in the win and held Hinsdale Central to 40 percent shooting. “We only had 11 turnovers, which is a positive sign that we are taking care of the ball,” said York coach Vince Doran. “We would like to be at single digits in turnovers. We had

only 12 against Proviso West and 11 against Hinsdale Central, which is not bad.” York also dropped a 53-48 WSC Silver game to Proviso West. York led 17-11 after the first quarter and 29-16 at halftime. However, Proviso West outscored York 37-19 in the second half. “We led all the way, but had a poor shooting quarter in the fourth,” said Doran. “We were 7-for-23 from three. That’s 30 percent and it’s not going to get it done. We had a sevenpoint fourth quarter, which was tough. Proviso has a nice team.” Morrissey led the Dukes with 14 points. Jack Julian added 13 points, while Patrick Grabowski had six points. Morrissey connected on 4 of 6 three-point attempts. Julian made two 3-pointers. York shot 37.5 percent from the field. Grabowski led the Dukes with five rebounds, while Morrissey had five assists. Julian added four assists. Morrissey had three steals. “Jack Morrissey played well against Hinsdale and Proviso,” said Doran. “He had a nice weekend. “I also thought Jack Julian had a pretty good weekend.” York was 4-3 in WSC Silver play after the Lyons Township win. “We want to do a better job in the league in the second half,” said Doran earlier last week. “We want to try and improve. We’re looking at a lot of tape from the first time we played these teams and we have a good idea of what we can improve on. It was a very good thing that we beat Central. That gave them their second loss, but we slipped up against Proviso and could have controlled our own destiny if we won that game. The league always is exciting. It’s totally up for grabs. There are a lot of teams all bunched up right now.”

shorthanded in the game with numerous players away on a school retreat. St. Laurence led 19-5 after the first quarter and 35-11 at halftime. Troy Burrows led the Knights with 10 points. Amari Reed had eight points and two steals. He shot 6-for-6 from the freethrow line. Matt Sutton added seven points and Austin Reed had five rebounds. The Knights also split a pair of recent games with Aurora Christian and Timothy Christian. IC Catholic Prep lost by three points to Aurora Christian (55-52) and downed crosstown neighbor Timothy Christian by seven (67-60). “We’ve seen Aurora Christian the last three years,” said

}Our bench has been extremely enthusiastic in games. They are a positive influence for us.” — Coach TJ Tyrell IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “We’ve seen them a lot in the regional. It’s developed into a nice little rivalry. This time it was a back-and-forth battle. We were up by two points with a minute to go and couldn’t put things away. Here was a tip out with a rebound after a free-throw miss and they hit a

ELMHURST — The Timothy Christian girls basketball team recorded a pair of recent wins against Willows Academy and Elmwood Park. In a 47-26 non-conference win over Willows, Dani VanLaten led the Trojans with a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Olivia Hoekstra added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Allison Zeilstra had eight points and seven rebounds. Grace Miller finished with seven points and three steals. “It was a great game by all our players,” said Timothy Christian coach Michele Strube. In a 44-30 Metro Suburban Conference East Division win over Elmwood Park, Hoekstra led the way with 10 points. Miller added eight points. Timothy also lost 57-48 to Nazareth Academy in non-conference action. “We played a good game, but we fell short in the fourth quarter,” said Strube. VanLaten led the Trojans with 14 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Hoekstra added 11 points, while Zeilstra had seven points and three steals. Timothy Christian boys basketball The Timothy Christian boys basketball team scored a hard-fought 57-52 overtime win over Illiana Christian in Metro Suburban Conference East Division action. Timothy led 14-4 after the first quarter and 22-11 at halftime. Illiana outscored Timothy 19-13 in the third quarter and 15-10 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Ben Lodewyk led the Trojans with 16 points and four rebounds. He shot 3-for-4 from the 3-point line and also was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Jonny Strube added 16 points and shot 5-for-7 from the 3-point line. Joey Davidson added 11 points, five rebounds and two steals. Trayvon Williams had five rebounds and two steals, while Josh Caver ad two blocks. Timothy shot 47 percent from the field in the game. Earlier, Timothy lost 53-45 to Wheaton Academy in MSC crossover action. Timothy led 17-9 after the first quarter and 26-21 at halftime. “In the middle of the third quarter they tightened their defense and we had some empty possessions,” said Timothy coach Jack LeGrand. “They went on a nice run to take the lead. We tried to make it close down the stretch but couldn’t get it done.” Wheaton Academy outscored Timothy 32-19 in the second half. Davidson led the Trojans with 14 points and four rebounds. Lodewyk added 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. “Offensively we couldn’t get it going,” said LeGrand. “We were shooting the ball well, but then they tightened the defense up and had some good defensive stops. We had a couple of empty possessions on the offensive end that hurt us. From early in the third quarter to the beginning of the fourth quarter we went without a field goal. We also were outrebounded (38-25), and that was a little concerning. Wheaton Academy hit a couple big threes down the stretch and one of their players had 24 points, which gave us problems. Wheaton Academy is a similar team to us. Their season has been up and down as well. In this game they made the plays when they needed to. Both teams are similar in that we’re teaching the importance of ball security and improving on the team game on both offense and defense. We got a little stagnant offensively and some of that is on us and some of that is on the Wheaton defense. They made some adjustments.” Timothy improved to 7-11 overall and 4-3 in MSC East play after the Illiana win.

three late in the game. It was a nice play.” Austin Reed had good distribution games against Aurora Christian (8 assists) and Timothy Christian (6 assists). He had 22 points in the Timothy Christian win. “Austin has been doing a great job seeing the floor and getting his teammates involved,” said Tyrrell. Tyrrell also lauded the efforts of Will Lyles and Jordan Rowell in recent games. “Will gets better each week,” he said. “He has an extra soft touch around the basket. He had four dunks in a four-game stretch. He’s getting up there and he has confidence doing so. It’s been a pleasure having Jordan Rowell back. He’s a positive role model and an outstanding athlete. He’s led us in rebounds since he came back. He had 10 rebounds against Timothy Christian and has

been averaging 8-10 rebounds a game. That’s not too bad.” The loss to St. Laurence left the Knights at 11-9 overall. “We’re starting to be more patient offensively and are staying composed down the stretch,” said Tyrrell. “We’ve had so many close games. We’ve had a triple overtime game and another overtime game. We lost to Chicago Christian earlier in the year by two or three points. Being in those close games has taught the kids to never give up. It’s exactly what we need going into the playoffs. It’s great that multiple kids are getting involved and we’ve stepped up our energy, which is what we need. We’re still very optimistic that our regional is winnable. Anybody can come out of it.” Tyrrell also tipped his hat to the team’s bench players, including Trey Morris, Troy Simonides and Jack Ricobene. “Our bench has been extremely enthusiastic in games,” he said. “They are a positive influence for us. Trey, Troy and Jack have been the leaders with the chants. The guys are upbeat and are having fun.” IC Catholic prep played Elgin St. Edward earlier in the week in a Metro Suburban Conference West Division game.

York junior varsity hockey club wins league title Dukes go 25-1, head to playoffs ELMHURST — On Saturday, Jan. 16 the York junior varsity hockey club finished league play with a 5-0 victory over Naperville Central. The win gave the Dukes a 25-1 record to claim the regular season conference title. York came out playing its fast-paced style from the puck drop against a tough Naperville team. Anthony Trankina opened the scoring with a wrist shot at 3:14 of the first period, assisted by Matthew Anikel. The Dukes opened up the

game in the second period with goals by Anders Caster, Colin Stasica and Anthony Trankina’s league-leading 30th tally of the season. York’s defense was solid, as it has been all season, anchored by goal tender Dylan Reynolds. The Dukes nailed the game shut in the third frame on Castler’s second goal of the contest. The trademark balance of the team was in evidence during the shut-out. The Dukes have given up just 17 goals in 26 games while scoring 135 in league play this season. Next stop for the club is the playoffs and state tournament.

Your mind needs to be clear and focused in order to have productive practices and reach goals. The seniors lead by example and the underclassmen look up to those girls. This is a team that doesn’t get nervous or stressed out. They go do it and have a great time performing and dancing. They don’t freak out. They just go out there and do what they love to do and what they want to do.” Gillette said she couldn’t ask for a better way to cap off her high school dance career. “It’s all I was hoping for this year,” she said earlier last week. “It means a lot. This is probably the last time I will perform in a team competition. It’s very special because I’m doing it with this team. It means even more because of that. This is my favorite team.”

York girls bowling team wins Hinsdale South Ed Puck tournament Dukes preparing for upcoming postseason play By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The York girls bowling team is gathering up some strong momentum heading into the postseason. The Dukes recently won the Hinsdale South Ed Puck invitational and also took third at the Hinsdale Central invitational. At Hinsdale South, sophomore Lauren Gould took second with a 1,058 series. Senior Emma Baubly was third with a 1,055, while junior Jessica Cwik placed fourth with a 1,051.

Sophomore Nora O’Brien took 12th overall at the Leyden 6X6 tournament with a 1,020 series for six games (170 average). “The girls in our program come in with relatively no bowling background so it’s amazing to see what they can accomplish after only a single season and what the older girls have done over the past few years,” said Schroeder. “Jim Hedman (York assistant coach) and I have worked incredibly hard over the past three years to build a successful program that will continue year after year. The girls work just as hard to see these results. It’s an amazing thing to be part of a team with a clear vision and a work ethic to make it possible.” York competed in the WSC tournament at Stardust Lanes in Addison earlier this week. President’s Weekend seminar sheds light on Lincoln’s legal career Sign up for ‘Lincoln on the Eighth Judicial Circuit’ seminar at Elmhurst Historical Museum on Feb. 13

ELMHURST — For 23 years, Abraham Lincoln rode Central Illinois’ Eighth Judicial Circuit, building his law practice and his political base through his relationships with the circuit lawyers and their judge, David Davis. A team of lawyers, led by Davis, gained the Republican nomination for Lincoln at the Convention in Chicago in May of 1860. The split of the Democratic Party made the nomination tantamount to election. The circuit, with its leaders and its lawyers, was truly Lincoln’s “ladder to the presidency.” In honor of Lincoln and in celebration of President’s Day, the Elmhurst Historical Museum presents an in-depth seminar on Saturday, Feb. 13, titled, “Lincoln on the Eighth Judicial Submitted photo Circuit.” Abraham Lincoln’s legal career will be the subject of an inThe Lincoln seminar will fea- depth seminar at Elmhurst Historical Museum on Saturday, ture Guy Fraker, a Blooming- Feb. 13. ton attorney who has made an ical climb. www.elmhursthistory.org (in the avocation of following in LinThis special presidential learn- Adult Programs section). Neighbors concerned over dogs in the elements On Jan. 22, an officer responded to the 800 block of N. Lombard St. to investigate complaints of excessive barking by a dog and concerns due to the cold temperatures. The dog was outside at time of arrival and was barking, but not excessively.
