School Board approves Bryan detention site, but not York, Jackson

By Dan McLeister For The Elmhurst Independent

ELMHURST — Elmhurst School District 205 wants to wait to see how the Madison School storm water detention project goes before it commits to other properties, according to School Board member John McDonough. At a recent School Board meeting, he said the Madison intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the City should be

going forward as soon as possible. The optimum time for construction would be when students are gone, according to McDonough, who is a District 205 representative to the Storm Water Communications Committee formed by Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley. For the Bryan school gravel lot, final design is not yet completed. In order to expedite construction, the City Council is asking for a School Board resolution as soon as possible. “I said we would try to meet their timelines so they can get the most effective use of the construction season as possible,” McDonough said at the most recent School Board

meeting. “I said in regard to future projects, the Board wanted to go one project at a time.” A letter from Dist. 205 Superintendent David Moyer to City Manager Jim Grabowski indicated that “the Board is interested in coming to closure only on that project (Bryan) at this time. When that agreement is finalized, the Board is open to the possibility of discussing options at other sites.” The City has proposed storm water detention projects at sites such as York High School and Jackson Elementary School. “However, the Board also continues to question whether dual usage options can be

implemented in such a way that effectively protects the interests of students and programming for children who attend Elmhurst District 205 schools, and therefore, it would like to monitor how the Madison property performs as part of any future decision making that might include dual use options,” Moyer told Grabowski. McDonough noted that the School Board wanted to see what the full impact might be on the use of the properties by students. He said that the impact may not be as intense as some of the other sites that the Board is considering. “It will give us some guide-

lines as to how to use a property for storm water detention and another purpose,” McDonough said. “One of the things we will have to determine is when will we be comfortable enough with what has happened with one pilot project to determine that, yes, we are willing to commit to other projects.”

Obituary

Robert Hamilton Kaiser, 73 ELMHURST — Robert Hamilton Kaiser passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 in his home in Charleston, West Virginia, at the age of 73. His unexpected death has left his family and friends devastated. Born in Chicago, Bob moved to Elmhurst where he attended Hawthorne, Sandburg and York High Schools. He began his professional career in 1971 in Niagara Falls, N.Y. with Union Carbide’s Metals Division in Research and Development. In 1991, “Dr. Bob” moved with what had become Elkem Metals Company first to Pittsburgh, and then later to Charleston, W. Va., where he worked at the alloy plant until his retirement in 2004. After retirement, Bob continued to help others through his extensive volunteering, especially with the AARP Tax Division, Habitat for Humanity’s homebuilding projects, and West Virginia Public Radio telethons. His unique perspective on life warmed the hearts of many and will be sorely missed.

Bob is survived by his beloved children Rolf (Shannon Bonds) Kaiser of Tiburon, California; and, Gretchen (Frank Flannery) Kaiser of Sisters, Oregon. Especially dear to “PaPa’s” heart were his two young grandchildren, Will and Isla. Also surviving is his wife Pauline; even though they had been separated for years, their relationship remained close. In addition, his sister Donna (John) Wagner of Elmhurst and their sons Deane and Jeffrey. In lieu of flowers, Bob requested memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army, Iowa State University, or a charity of the donor’s choosing. A Celebration of Life was held on Tuesday, February 23 at the First Presbyterian Church of Charleston. The family plans to arrange an additional local memorial service in the spring. We have created a webpage at echothis. com/bob/ that will include a more detailed obituary and favorite pictures of the man who was loved so much. In addition, all are welcome to contact the family at wemissyoubob@gmail.com.

Robert, all of whom preceded him in death. Dr. Cronin was a scholar athlete at Fenwick High School, graduating in 1944, and went on to study Pre-Med at the University of Notre Dame, where he also earned a monogram letter in football. He graduated in 1946. He turned down an offer to play professional football, choosing instead to attend Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1950 and became an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Dr. Cronin completed his residency at the University of Illinois’ Research and Education Hospital in Chicago. He practiced in Elmhurst and at Loyola for 55 years. In 1954, Dr. Cronin enlisted in the Air Force and worked as an orthepedic surgery resident at the Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul. He began his medical practice in Oak Park, seeing patients at Elmhurst Memorial, St. Anne’s and Loretto Hospitals. In 1960, the Cronins moved to Elmhurst. In the early 60s, he and a group of 10 doctors purchased the land at Palmer and Kenilworth in Elmhurst, where they built a medical office building that still stands. In 1986, Dr. Cronin bought out the other doctors and partners and took over full ownership of the building. It became not only an office but also the central campaign office for those who went on to seek political office like son Dan. Heisman winner credits

Cronin with saving his career Proud of his ties to Notre Dame, Dr. Cronin became a specialist for injuries suffered by athletes -- in a way, he was one of the first-ever doctors of “sports medicine” as it is known today. A great accomplishment that made him proud was working on Notre Dame quarterback John Huarte. While playing for the Fighting Irish, Huarte was told by doctors in South Bend he would need surgery after separating his shoulder. Legendary Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian urged Huarte to drive into Chicago to see Dr. Cronin, just to make sure the surgery was really necessary -- turns out it wasn’t! According to Parseghian, Dr. Cronin felt the shoulder would heal itself with rest, so they decided to “let Mother Nature handle it” and it apparently worked out. Huarte, of course, went on to not only win the Heisman Trophy, but also to play in the NFL, including a stint with the Chicago Bears. He always credited Dr. Cronin for “saving his career.” Lots of children and grandchildren, lots of success Dr. & Mrs. Cronin boast a long list of successful children, who range in occupation from doctors to lawyers to accountants to pilots to architects and more. At the top of that list is Dan Cronin, former state Senator, now serving as DuPage County Board Chairman – a position considered close to

being a governor, due to the size of the County. Also among the high-profile children of Dr. Cronin is daughter Cindy Cronin Cahill, who served as Elmhurst City Treasurer back in the 1980s. And when you have a lot of children, you inevitably had a lot of grandchildren -- 38 to be exact. Dr. Cronin’s grandchildren range in age and in talents and were a great source of pride to him. Many have taken up the art of Irish dance and would all come out for parades and special events, as Dr. Cronin drove a tiny red sports car. Arrangements and memorial requests A wake was held on Wednesday, March 9 at Gibbons Funeral Home from 3-8 p.m. Friends and family will meet for a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 134 Arthur Street. Interment Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery in Elmhurst. Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Church, 134 Arthur Street, Elmhurst; or to Loyola University Medical Center: Department of Orthopaedics, 2160 South First Avenue, Maywood, 60153. Rest in peace, Dr. Cronin. Your contributions to this earth were many and you will be long remembered for the legacy you left behind. Funeral services were handled by Gibbons Funeral Home in Elmhurst.

Villa Park official says North Avenue poised for transformation By Dee Longfellow For The Elmhurst Independent

VILLA PARK — During the course of two ribbon-cuttings held by the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce at new businesses on Friday, Mar. 4, The Independent was able to catch a few moments with Jan Fiola, community and economic development director for the Village of Villa Park, who has been very busy of late. “We’re excited about the new boom of development on North Avenue [in Villa Park],” she told The Independent in an exclusive interview. “Harley Davidson is working closer to open its event center and with it, offer its Riding Academy for new and inexperienced Harley riders.” New tenants are coming to North Park Plaza as well, according to Fiola.

“We’ve got the AT&T store going in outside of Target. There’s a dentist going into the space as well,” she said. “Then, we’re expecting to [sign agreements] to bring a Chipotle, Firehouse Subs and a Dunkin Donuts to North Park Plaza. Once we have interest from national retailers, others will usually follow.” The property east of North Park Plaza is currently under construction. Salvage Art has also signed a contract to renovate its space, Fiola said. A well-known gas stationconvenience store known as Ricky Rocket’s is coming to North Avenue at Ellsworth. It was approved at last week’s Planning & Zoning Committee meeting, according to Fiola. It will likely be approved at the next meeting of the Village

Board of Trustees. “We are really proud of what is going to be a transformation of North Avenue,” Fiola said. “We’re happy to see companies like Firehouse Subs and Chipotle – national chains – take notice of Villa Park.” Following the lead of other growth-oriented communities like Elmhurst, Fiola said the Village soon expects to host a Business Brokers meeting, bringing together business and commercial real estate agents, builders and developers, to share information about available properties, talk about current projects in progress and for general networking. It is also a good time for the Business Brokers to meet Village staff and hear what programs and incentives might be available to them.

Continued from page 6 Feb. 24 • A victim in the 300 block of N. Highview told police she received a call from a store’s security department regarding a store charge card. Police said an unknown suspect opened a charge account using the victim’s maiden name and purchased goods. The victim doesn’t know who may have used her identity to open this account. • The owner of a cigar shop in the 100 block of W. Park Ave. told police that he received a phone call from his security company, advising him that the burglar alarm at his store had sounded. He gave proper codes and told them not to call the police because he thought it was a false alarm. Upon arriving at the store at 7:15 a.m., the owner found items missing, including lottery tickets. • A victim in the 600 block of W. North told police that an unknown suspect broke the passenger side rear window of her parked vehicle. The suspect then removed her property inside the vehicle. Feb. 17 A complainant at a store in the 600 block of N. York Road told police that an unknown suspect came into the store at around 10:14 a.m. and stole a large floral arrangement and vase. Security cameras were able to capture the suspect leave the store and parking lot in a vehicle. An officer was

able to make contact with the suspect, and he will come into the police department to discuss the matter. June 21, 2015-Feb. 15 A victim in the 100 block of E. Quincy told police she had recently received a 1099

tax form for 2016 in the mail, which indicated that an unknown suspect(s) had apparently used her identity to file a 2015 tax return. Victim has contacted the company that filed the tax return and received an affidavit to sign and return.

More crime news… Youth accused of library fight released to parents

Battery was reported between two young people at the Elmhurst Public Library on February 26. At around 7:38 p.m., police were advised that two youths were arguing over the use of library space. The suspect reportedly grabbed the victim by the neck and pushed him against a window. The suspect admitted he had battered the victim. An officer spoke to both parties and their respective parents.

Suspects leave salon following alleged fight

On Feb. 28, officers were called to a fight in progress at a nail salon in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:46 p.m. The suspect, who was not identified, told the other people in her party to get up and leave the salon. When the manager said the suspect still needed to pay for unfinished services, the suspect replied they were not going to pay for anything. The suspect and her mother were advised they were not to return to the salon in accordance with a no-trespass notice.

Victim claims to be harassed, threatened in library lot

On Feb. 26, a complainant told police that while stopping at a stop sign in the Elmhurst Public Library parking lot, the vehicle behind her began honking. As she drove to the drop-off lane, the driver behind her continued to honk, yell profanities at her and exit his vehicle with his hands raised, saying, “Who wants it? Because one of you is going to get it.” The man’s words and actions alarmed the complainant. An investigation is pending.

Watchdog duo: ‘It’s not their money; it’s the taxpayers’ money’

Join the ABT Party I
Don’t forget to vote March 15, unless you’re voting for Trump

Many community newspapers profile and make endorsements of candidates for political elections, such as the Primary coming up on March 15. Here at the Independent we cover local elections and profile candidates, but we don’t typically endorse specific candidates, but if we do, it’s only at the level of alderman and mayor. We don’t tell our readers how to vote, but we try to keep them informed as best we can, knowing people are often too busy to follow every race in-depth. We REMIND them to vote, we advise the dates and times the polls are open. In the past we have not ever endorsed at the County or State level, and certainly not at the national level – until today. This year The Independent has decided to make an endorsement solely for Republican Primary in the race for President of the United States. Our recommendation is to vote for somebody, anybody, except Donald Trump. We urge you to join the ABT Party – Anybody But Trump. Simply put, Trump’s candidacy is based on loud talk and no substance. He has put down women, journalists, medical doctors, people of other races, while embracing – well, at least not declining – the support of David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the KKK, up until March 3. (As an update, on March 3, pressure forced Trump to denounce Duke and disavow him and his support. Also on March 3, Trump announced that he would consider a run as an Independent (no relation!), if the heat from the Republican Party didn’t let up. “I’m not being treated the right way [by the Republican Party], I’m not being treated properly,” he told reporter Jake Tapper on the CNN news show “State of the Union” on March 3. His poll numbers and results in the primaries so far show him with a very strong lead. And he’s taking credit for all the “new” voters in the Republican party, whom he believes have come on board just to support him. Donald Trump is an embarrassment to our country and to the Republican Party. It might be too late to reverse this train wreck, but on March 15th, Republican voters in Illinois will at least have a chance to make a statement. We urge you to join the ABT Party and vote for somebody, anybody, but Donald Trump. Pete Crugerm Publisher Dee Longfellow, Editorial Coordinator

happened to be listening to The Joe Walsh Show one afternoon earlier in the year on WIND-AM

560. The mere mention of Walsh’s name—he was a one-term GOP Congressman in the 8th Congressional District—usually draws ire from most liberals and admiration from most conservatives who’ve ever listened to his program. Walsh has hosted events in Elmhurst—his most recent was held in January at the Diplomat West Banquet Hall on North Avenue—and whether you love him or loathe him, there is no gray area with Joe Walsh. You always know exactly where he stands on every issue. One particular segment addressed a topic that most everyone who pays taxes can agree on, whether you lean conservative or liberal: How taxpayer dollars are spent by public officials not only in Springfield, but also in municipalities and school districts across the state. Walsh interviewed Kirk Allen and John Kraft who, in 2010, started the Edgar County Watchdogs, which has a website: EdgarCountyWatchdogs. com. (Edgar County is located south of Danville and east of Charleston along the Illinois-Indiana border.). He also had the duo on his program last month. Allen and Kraft described themselves on the program as “a couple of (military) vets” who were “lied to locally by our public bodies,” so they got together and decided to do something about it. “We learned the laws that we could utilize to hold them accountable.” A retired Air Force vet, Allen was serving as a township supervisor, emergency medical technician and a volunteer fire chief in the small community of Kansas, Ill. He described a situation in 2011 that first got the ball rolling to start the Edgar County Watchdogs -- an 11-day-old baby that

Sandro Sez... Mike Sandrolini Columnist apparently was not breathing. Allen responded to a 9-1-1 call from a young parent, but when he got there, the child was fine. “The child appeared blue because [the child was wearing] a blue nightie,” Allen told the Joe Walsh Show. “I called the dispatchers and said, ‘How come you weren’t on the phone with this person, giving infancy CPR? I go to the 9-1-1 meeting, addressed the Board and they assured me that all of our dispatchers were certified. “That was a lie. They haven’t been for six years, no license for the 9-1-1 dispatch center. And they did not have the required EMD certifications from IDPH.” Allen concluded that “if they were going to lie to me about that, what else are they lying about?” “I began to look and it’s never stopped,” he said. They have since uncovered hundreds of incidents of corruption throughout the state and their website gets tens of thousands of hits per month. The site also has a hotline on which they field between five and 10 tips per day from throughout the state. They try to follow up on those tips as time permits. “We need a staff to answer all the tips every day,” Allen told the show. One thing is certain: Allen and Kraft aren’t afraid to confront public officials and governing bodies, which they’ve done frequently.

Allen and Kraft utilize public pressure and the media in their efforts to uproot public corruption. They routinely exercise the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), and when necessary, they’re not shy about filing lawsuits to gain access to records. During the summer of 2014, Kraft even made a citizen’s arrest. He had the entire Clark County Park District board arrested at a board meeting because board members violated the Illinois Open Meetings Act by not allowing public comment at the meeting. (Clark County is located just south of Edgar County.) The sheriff arrived and told the board that Kraft had the right to make the arrest because board members had broken the law. Closer to home, Allen and Kraft have been on the front lines regarding the more than $700,000 severance package that former College of DuPage President Dr. Robert Breuder was scheduled to receive after announcing in January, 2015, he was going to retire this March. However, the COD board ended up firing Breuder last October and denying him the severance package. Breuder filed a wrongful termination suit shortly thereafter. “We were first looking into the high salaries of public officials so I did a FOIA request for Dr. Breuder,” Kraft told the Joe Walsh Show. “They (COD) refused to give it (Breuder’s W-2 form) to me (in December of 2013). So we ended up suing them over it.” Allen says government waste and spending, particularly at the local level, “goes on everywhere we’ve looked” and describes the waste as “unbelievable.” “We’ve lost our moral fiber,” he said. “There’s absolutely no regard or understanding that it’s not their money -- it’s the taxpayers’ money.”

LWV welcomes C.O.D. acting president to offer update ELMHURST — Join the League of Women Voters of Elmhurst on Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave., to hear from College of DuPage acting interim President Joseph Collins. Recently, the Higher Learning Commission placed the College of DuPage, which has more than 29,000

students, on probation for concerns with the school’s integrity and governance. With that in mind, the League will be asking about the fate of the students, the use of the community’s tax dollars, the reputation of the school and how, we as citizens, can help move the politics out of the council. It is designed to encourage all of us to look at District 502’s future.

The League is an issues-oriented, member-directed volunteer organization that is committed to open, responsive, and effective government brought about by informed, involved citizens. For more information, visit lwvelmhurst.org. This program is free and open to the public. It is not an Elmhurst Public Library program.

Smithsonian exhibit opens at Elmhurst History Museum March 18 Celebrates the invention of the post-WWII American Backyard

ELMHURST — Perennial signs of a suburban summer include the smell of hot dogs on the grill, the sound of a mower on a Saturday afternoon, pool parties, and get-togethers on the patio. The Smithsonian explores the evolution from the front porch to the outdoor living room in Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard. The new traveling exhibition will be on view at the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst March 18 through May 29. Through rare photographs, historic drawings and period advertisements, Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard takes visitors on a journey to the mid-century backyard of the 1950s and ‘60s—from the rise of the suburbs and tract houses and the beauty of postwar garden design to the birth of

the environmental movement. The exhibition was organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). America in the 1950s In the 1950s, America was a nation emerging from the shadow of World War II, searching for ways to enjoy its newfound peace and prosperity. Postwar trends such as the Baby Boom, a growing middle class, the doit-yourself concept, and a dramatic rise in home ownership remade much of the U.S. and contributed to the development of the suburban backyard. The mid-century backyard became an extension of the house, a room designed for relaxing, recreation, and entertaining. Private backyard pools were an affordable luxury for many, and the patio became the perfect place for a backyard grill and patio furniture made with new materials like plastic and aluminum. The goal of WYSE is to introduce students with the course content and a level of competition of science or engineering at the college level. Tests are written by faculty from schools across the Midwest and each increases in difficulty from the regional level to sectionals to state finals. Sectional testing are scheduled for March 17 at North Central College. The Illinois State Finals will take place in mid-April.

Scenes from Emerson’s Science Olympiad

Wishing on a star, and five-star living. There is a difference.

“There are opportunities to engage us spiritually, physically and intelligently. Sara learned to play bridge; I’m in the fitness center every day. Our friends think we live at a resort. It’s everything we could’ve wished for.”

For Dr. Sunny and Sara Andrews, living at Park Place means fully enjoying every amenity, service and convenience — and that’s made all the difference in their retirement. But you won’t often catch them in their apartment; they’re almost always taking part in a class, course or club somewhere on our campus. Read more of the Andrews’ story at ParkPlaceElmhurst.com. Request a brochure or schedule your personal visit by calling us at 1.800.941.1514.

Peter Nicholas developments handled by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty

This photo of a worker performing his tasks on a portion of the Hahn Street development, now known as Elmhurst 255, was taken on Feb. 22 from the parking lot at Angelo’s Restaurant. The scene at the construction site changes daily, as the project continues toward its completion. More photos on pages 22 and 34.

ELMHURST — The Elmhurst office of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group announced last week that it would represent residential sales for two Illinois new construction developments designed by award-winning architect Peter Nicholas, founder of Nicholas Design Collaborative Ltd. Case Study Houses 2111 in downtown Highland Park consists of four modern single-family residences arranged around a central auto court reminiscent

of European-style piazzas and Flite Series, located in Ottawa, Illinois, near Starved Rock State Park, which consists of four modern townhomes that are part of Heritage Harbor Ottawa, a 142-acre master-planned marina resort community located on the Illinois River. Broker Diane M. Karpman of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group represents residential sales for both projects. Peter Nicholas started Nicholas Architects in 1989, which eventually became Nicholas Design Collaborative Ltd. He is a native of California, but decided to relocate to Chicago largely because of his interest in urban architecture. Nicholas won a 2015 ALA Award of Merit for the design of Case Study Houses 2111.

York boys basketball team wins fourth regional title in a row Dukes opened play in Class 4A East Aurora sectional earlier this week

third-quarter run put York up 27-26 after three quarters. York moved to 19-12 with the win against Naperville North. “I am really proud of the kids,” said Doran. “We have good players here who go out and execute. It’s as simple as that. We have really good basketball players at York and we have good, young kids. And our younger kids are gaining experience seeing us play and that only helps the program. We have a freshman (Nick Kosich) who starts for us, plus a sophomore and two juniors who play and are contributors. We also have a strong mix of seniors and good young players gaining valuable varsity minutes especially in huge games. It’s invaluable for the kids in terms of development.” York opened play in the Class 4A East Aurora sectional against West Suburban Conference Silver Division foe Glenbard West earlier this week. Glenbard West won both of the conference meetings earlier in the season. Glenbard West is the No. 2 seed in the sectional. York is the No. 6 seed. “Both were pretty tight games. In the last one Glenbard West extended its lead in the fourth quarter,” said Doran. “We feel good about the matchup. Our kids will be ready.” If York defeated Glenbard West earlier this week it will face either topseeded Benet Academy or No. 4 seed Hinsdale South in the sectional championship game Friday at 7 p.m. at East Aurora. York’s Rich George and Sean Jeneman both advanced to the sectional portion of the Class 4A state 3-point shooting contest.

By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — It’s a four-peat for the York boys basketball team. The Dukes defeated Naperville North 47-40 to win the Class 4A Lyons Township regional title. It was York’s fourth regional title in a row under fourth-year coach Vince Doran. “We defended very well,” said Doran. “To hold a high-scoring team such as Naperville Central to 40 points you are doing a good job. We did a good job keeping them off the glass. They are an outstanding rebounding team, especially on the offensive glass. We held them to three offensive rebounds. That was crucial for us to be successful.” York also defeated Naperville North 45-40 to win the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic tile this past December. Naperville North was the No. 3 seed in the sectional. “It’s nice having seniors who have been around and understand the regional championship environment and have the ability to step up and lead the rest of the guys on the team,” said Doran. “It was a huge difference for us.” Down the stretch, York’s Ryan Camp hit a big 3-pointer after Naperville North had tied the game. After Camp’s 3-pointer, Jack Morrissey’s steal and basket put the Dukes up by five points. York trailed 8-7 after the first quarter but came back to take a 17-14 lead into halftime. The two teams each scored 14 points in the third quarter. York outscored Naperville North 16-12 in the fourth quarter. Patrick Grabowski led the Dukes with 16 points on the strength of 6-for-8 shooting from the field. He also was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Morrissey had 11 points and six steals. Camp had eight points and five rebounds, while Jordan Gray had five points and 10 rebounds. York shot 43.6 percent from the field and 11-for-12 from the free-throw line (92 percent). IC Catholic Prep’s Lyles wins three awards Four-year manager Juan Navarro honored as well By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — IC Catholic Prep boys basketball player Will Lyles had himself a productive senior season. And that production was rewarded with a trio of recent honors. Lyles was named to the all-Metro Suburban Conference West Division team. In addition, Lyles was the recipient of the team’s Glue Guy Award and the Hustle Award. “Will has a big ceiling for his potential,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “I would say he was our most improved player. He showed big improvement from the beginning to the end of the year in addition to the growth he’s had since freshmen year. He’s

going to continue to grow and will be a good player wherever he decides to play next year.” The Glue Guy Award is voted on by the IC Catholic Prep players, while the Hustle Award is given based on a vote of the coaching staff. “The glue guy holds the team together and does all the little things,” said Tyrrell. “You don’t ask much of him because he does it already. The kids voted on the hustle award. He probably won every sprint we ran and sometimes he would lap guys because he would go so hard.” IC Catholic Prep finished the year 13-15 overall and ended 3-9 in conference play. The Knights defeated Lisle in the regional semifinals and lost to top seed Aurora Christian in the regional title game. “Lisle was a fun game for us,” said Tyrrell. “The kids played great. They locked down and battled and pulled out the win. We got down early against Aurora Christian and

Diving right in By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The secret to York junior Peter Barabolak’s success? Time and refinement. Barabolak continued to put in extra time diving over this past off-season and rather than focus on new dives, he simply kept working on the ones he already knew. “I practiced a lot in the off-season again,” he said. “I didn’t learn any new dives. I just worked on the same dives I had and made sure I got better and better and more consistent each day.” His strategy yielded results that were quite satisfactory. Barabolak ended up finishing 11th in the boys’ state diving competition in Evanston and earned himself a state medal. During the off-season Barabolak continued to work with the Windy City Dive Club out of the University of Illinois at Chicago. “The club helped me out a lot,” he said. “I didn’t take a half year off. I was able to be fresh and ready for the high school season. I was ready to go when we started.” With the club team, Barabolak competed in a regional diving event. “It was at the University of Chicago and was one

couldn’t battle back. We didn’t play as well as I had hoped.” Tyrrell labeled the season “up and down.” “That’s how it ended in the playoffs,” he said. “We needed to be more consistent. Still, we saw a lot of encouraging things.” Tyrrell noted the Knights won the Coal City Thanksgiving tournament and also won the IC-Westmont Christmas tournament. “We also made it to our fifth regional title game in a row,” he said. Tyrrell also lauded the program’s underlevel teams. The sophomore team went 26-2 and won the St. Laurence tournament, while the freshman team went 22-4 and won the Lisle tournament. “We have a lot to be proud of,” said Tyrrell. Tyrrell cited strong end-ofseason play by Austin Reed and Matt Sutton among others. “Austin was in the talk for

all-conference,” he noted. “He came on strong in the second half of the season. He’s a junior who we expect big things from. Matt Sutton also came on strong and played better.” Sophomores Luke Ricobene and Amari Reed were brought up for the playoffs. “Luke and Amari got a little experience and that will help them for next season,” the coach said. The Knights lose seniors Angel Ramirez, Garrett Cheng, Jack Ricobene and Lyles. “We’re thankful for our seniors,” said Tyrrell. “They were dedicated to the program over the years.” Tyrrell also praised the contributions of senior team manager Juan Navarro. “We must say thank-you to Juan Navarro,” he said. “He was at practice and helped out in all the games. He has been with the program for four years and has been an integral part of a successful program. The guys

like him. A position like that doesn’t get a lot of glory. It’s a hard job. Practices get long. The season gets long. It’s rare to have someone stay all four years. Juan did that and was a big part of the team.” Tyrrell noted Navarro’s brother, Marco, will join the varsity next season. He was the sophomore team manager this year. With talented players returning and a strong underclass system, Tyrrell is looking forward to the 2016-2017 season. “We feel good about the future,” he said. “It’s always tough because you don’t want to lose your last game of the season and especially in the regional championship because it takes so long to get there. Our juniors have a year of experience on the varsity and hopefully the sophomores can come up with their energy and enthusiasm and we will do some big things next year.”

of the bigger meets,” he said. “You are diving with people who are similar to you or better than you. It’s was kind of like being in a conference, sectional or state meet.” Barabolak said his consistency in particular this past season went to another level. “I was more consistent with my dives,” he said. “Plus, a lot of my DD’s (degree of difficulty) were

pretty good. I was able to hit most of my DD dives in the range of 40-50 points.” Twisting dives are Barabolak’s specialty. “They have the highest DD,” he said. “I’m pretty good at them and hitting those dives helps a lot.” Barabolak explained during a typical larger meet,

York’s Waldherr goes long By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — York junior Flanagan Waldherr did not take a direct route to distance swimming. And in the end, that’s just fine with him. “Freshman year I swam the 100 breaststroke,” he said. “We went to a freshman invite and I swam the 400 there and did pretty well for that distance. I started swimming distance more in the offseason and started contributing to the sopho-

more team.” Waldherr’s been contributing ever since on the distance front and this year qualified for the state meet in the 500 freestyle. “I really like the challenge of the 500,” he said. “It’s a hard race. I definitely like swimming it and knowing I put everything into it. There’s the distance part of it and the mental end. You have to focus and keep your mind on the race. If you are not mentally focused you will not do well. It’s a painful race and that’s where the mental part

ELMHURST — The York girls track team finished fifth at its own recent Fonzino Invitational recently. Downers Grove North won the meet. York won the 3,200 relay with a time of 9:49.9. Elizabeth Hagstrom took second in the 3,200 with a time of 11:20.0. Sophia Kilgast was sixth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:55.2. York placed fifth in the 800 relay with a time of 1:58.3. Hagstrom took third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:14.7. The Dukes also were fifth in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:28.0. Rosie Moll took sixth in the long jump at 14-5 1/4. Molly Evans was third in the triple jump at 32-3 1/2. Jeanette Morley was second in the high jump at 5-6.

comes in.” In recent years Waldherr said he’s shaved close to 50 seconds from his 500 time. This year in particular, he credits some of his improvement to the way York’s practices were structured. “This year we split things up into specialties,” he said. “People who swim strokes practice together and the distance people practice together. You are able to focus and get a solid distance pace in with your workouts. We had four distance swimmers this year and it was us and one of the coaches. You get quite a bit of personal attention. There’s no opportunity to slack off even if you wanted to.” Waldherr said a key to swimming a good 500 race is the kick. “The kick is something I’ve struggled with quite a bit in the past,” he said. “I’ve been working hard on it.” Waldherr was thrilled to make the state meet for the first time. “It meant a ton,” he said. “It’s what I’ve been working for the whole season. It’s the ultimate goal. I couldn’t tell you how I felt when I made it because

Junior qualified for boys state swimming meet in 500-yard freestyle I almost was in shock. It was incredible.” Waldherr lowered his time from 4:58 during the season to 4:45 in the postseason. He swam a 4:50 in sectional last year. Waldherr also was impressed with the state meet environment at Evanston Township High School. “The state meet was crazy,” he said. “You go in there and there is a lot of waiting involved because it is such a big meet. When you are warming up in the pool there is so much energy and there are a lot of people there. The crowd was crazy. It was a big adrenaline rush. It’s a completely different game once you get there. That’s probably the most people I’ll ever see in one swimming meet.” Waldherr is no stranger to swimming. His older siblings, Alex and Bailey, both swam and played water polo at York. Alex Waldherr plays on the club water polo team at Miami-

Ohio. Both Waldherr’s parents were swimmers and played water polo. They met playing water polo at the University of Illinois. Younger sister, Moleigh, is an eighth grader at Bryan Middle School and participates in both swimming and water polo. Waldherr, who swims for the Elmhurst Swim Team in the offseason, would like to swim at the college level. In his spare time he enjoys tinkering with electronics. “I like to take apart anything whether it’s broken, old or obsolete and see what I can make of it,” he said. “Right now I’m trying to make a 3-D printer out of different parts. I saw something on 3-D printing and it stuck with me and seemed like a fit.” Waldherr also is excited about the prospects for his senior season at York. “ I want to get back to the state meet,” he said.

A diver must do two each out of the front, back, reverse, inward and twisting, plus another of the diver’s choosing. “I do three twisters because that’s my best category,” he said. “That’s about 150 points.” Barabolak noted at the state meet 48 divers started out in the preliminaries doing five dives. “Guys are doing their highest DD’s to try and get the most points possible there because they trim the field from 48 to 16,” he said. The 16 divers who advance then perform three more dives and the field is trimmed to 12. The final 12 divers then perform their last three dives for a total of 11. “With the first eight you have to do at least one from each category,” said Barabolak. “I did two twisters in my first five. I wanted to rack up the most points. Cutting from 48 to 16 is a big gap. Those 48 divers are close—everybody is stacked up. With the first five you want to get the most points possible. Everybody is really good and

consistent.” Barabolak can’t trace the origins of how he started using twisting dives. “I have no clue,” he said. “It just came to me. Once you understand them they are pretty easy. A twisting dive happens pretty quickly because you are only on a 1-meter springboard.” Barabolak was candid with his assessment of his state performance. “I was pretty happy about it,” he said. “I felt I did pretty good. I missed one or two in the first eight and could have scored more points.” With one state medal in his possession, Barabolak is looking forward to his final highschool chapter next season. “My goal since the beginning of the season was to get into the top 12,” he said. “We’ll see what happens next year. There were three seniors ahead of me. Hopefully I can move up even more. I’m going to keep practicing. Next year I’m going to have even more focus and determination to move higher up.”

York varsity hockey club wins conference championship Both JV and varsity teams won it all ADDISON — The York Hockey Club registered a 3-2 win over Nequa Valley High School to complete a comefrom-behind best-of-three game series win and capture the 2016 Illinois High School Hockey League West Division varsity championship. The team’s championship completed York’s IHSHL sweep as the junior varsity Dukes beat Waubonsie Valley a week earlier for the title in the junior division. “This is the first time in the history of the club that both of our teams have won the IHSHL West Division conference championships in the same season,” said Coach Bruce Turpin. “This bodes well for our program.” In the varsity finale, the Dukes jumped out to an early lead when senior Joseph Levin carried the puck into the York offensive zone and delivered a pass to junior Elliott Fafinski in the high slot. Fafinski took a shot on net that Levin tipped

in for the goal. York made it 2-0 later in the opening frame when freshman Aiden Mann stole a pass and was off to the races on a breakaway. Mann pulled up just above the left circle and took a slap shot that beat the Nequa Valley goalie to double the Dukes lead. A strong forechecking effort, led by York seniors Mark Dorsey, Zach Johnson, Grey Miller and Ryan Pedote, kept the Wild Cats offense under control for most of the game. Late in the second period a tripping call left the Dukes short-handed for two minutes. After nearly killing off the penalty, thanks in part to strong play by senior defensemen Will Borrows, Trevor Corsello and Tom Sieracki, the visiting team was able to break through just before the man advantage expired and cut the Dukes lead in half. courtesy photo Fifteen seconds later, the The York Dukes hockey club celebrates on the ice after defeating Nequa Valley 3-2 to take the Wild Cats scored again to 2016 Illinois High School Hockey League West Division varsity championship. tie the game and the Dukes looked rattled. Elmhurst Children’s Theatre presents Guys and Dolls ELMHURST — With its unforgettable songs and a cast of gamblers, gals and gangsters, ECT’s Guys and Dolls is musical entertainment you can bet on. Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Guys and Dolls originally conquered Broadway in 1951, running for 1200 performances and winning five Tony Awards including Best New Musical. It was subsequently made into the beloved film starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. “It’s neat to see the kids so excited about this particular show,” said director Samantha Rose. “There are so many trends in musical theatre today, and I’m kind of old school, so to watch them get excited about a classic American musical is a thrill.” Set in the hustle and bustle of Prohibition-era New York City, Guys and Dolls includes fan-favorite songs as “Luck Be

A Lady,” “Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat,” and “A Bushel and a Peck.” Channeling his inner Frank Sinatra, Mason Lampa plays gambler Nathan Detroit. “This role has been a lot of fun to play, especially learning how to talk like a gangster,” explained the Bryan 8th grader. “There are a lot of funny scenes but one of my favorites is ‘Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat.’ It’s a lot of fun.” This is Tessa Olson’s first show with ECT. She is in 7th grade at Bryan Middle School. “I love ECT because it’s really inclusive,” she said. “You get to meet kids from different schools and make new friends.” “Directing ECT kids is an honor and a blast,” added Samantha Rose. “There is such a high level of musical talent

amongst this company – higher than I have ever had the opportunity to work with before, especially with this age group.” The 48-member cast includes Elmhurst community children in grades 5-8. The actors have been rehearsing their skills for the past two months, while plastering show posters throughout town. Phil Videckis is the music director and Caleb Wimbush is the show’s assistant director. Guys and Dolls runs Friday, March 18 at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 19 at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 20 at 2 p.m. Performances take place at Bryan Middle School, 111 W. Butterfield Road. CHAMPAIGN — Illinois sustainability champions have been recognized every year since 1987 through the Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Awards (IGSA). Applications are now open for the 2016 IGSA, the nation’s longest standing state environmental award program, through which companies, municipalities, and organizations are acknowledged for their efforts for minimizing their environmental impact and having positive economic and societal consequences for their sustainability actions. The award program is a service of the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Public and private Illinois organizations statewide are implementing strategies to save money and resources by eliminating wasted energy, water, and material in their manufacturing and other activities. The Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Award is an

opportunity to be recognized as a leader in your sector for environmental efficiency and sustainable leadership. Four recent winners show how they did it in an on-line video profiling of: Nestle Inc. Jacksonville, Ill.; the City of Galena; a small business “Beelove” of Chicago (makers of raw honey and honey-infused skin and haircare); and, the City of Arcola. “Advancing the ‘Triple Bottom Line’ catalyzes economic and job growth within Illinois while still preserving our natural and cultural resources,” according to Kevin O’Brien, ISTC director. Applications are available on the IGSA website at istc. illinois.edu/info/govs_awards. cfm They will be accepted until 5 p.m. Friday, May 20. Sponsorship opportunities for the awards ceremony are also available: questions can be referred to istc-govsawards@ illinois.edu. Applications must be submitted on-line. The 2016 Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Union League Club of Chicago, 65 West Jackson Blvd., Chicago.

“This agreement provides a tremendous amount of value to the Information Technology department,” he said. “We’ll be able to partner with DuPage County on projects, initiatives, software and hardware platforms, and short- and longterm planning in order to better serve the people of DuPage County.”

Note: The post office requires a new request form every three years. If you have already mailed in your form, please disregard this notice.

“It will allow us to leverage technology and ensure work being done isn’t being duplicated by both agencies,” he said. “We’ll also be able to take advantage of staffing resources and technical expertise with both agencies.” Joe Potenza, Chief Information Officer for the Forest Preserve District, agreed.

for other agencies in DuPage County and beyond.” Forest Preserve District Commissioner Jeff Redick, District 2, said the partnership gives each agency the ability to implement operating efficiencies that will provide higher levels of service at a greater value to the people they represent.

WHEATON — The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County approved an intergovernmental agreement at its March 1 meeting, which authorizes the District to partner with DuPage County on special projects. The agreement is expected to improve efficiencies and save taxpayers money. The agreement is expected to

be considered for approval by the DuPage County Board on March 8. Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore said the agreement between the two agencies was borne out of a commitment to explore cost-saving partnerships, identify efficiencies and reduce costs that the Forest Preserve Board of Commissioners and County Board share. “This is a powerful tool that will allow the Forest Preserve District and County to serve our constituents in a more efficient and more effective way,” he said. “This provides the outline to allow us to move forward and will serve as a model
