Dental implants are the closest cousin to natural teeth. They are permanent false teeth anchored right into your jawbone, just like your natural teeth. They’re more stable than dentures, and eating is done with ease and comfort. Many patients find implants give them a more positive self-image and more confidence. Implants can be used to stabilize dentures and bridges, replace just one tooth or to rebuild an entire jaw of missing teeth. The best part is that they look and feel just like natural teeth. Dental implants are reliable. Patients have retained them for more than twenty years with a better than 90% success rate.

From Our Family To Yours

Dental implant treatments does require a greater investment of time and money, but in the long run, it’s well worth it.

CBE shares behinds-the-scenes tour with 70 students ELMHURST — Seventy kindergarten students from Jackson School recently had a field trip to Community Bank of Elmhurst to see the inner workings of a bank. CBE Chairman of the Board Bill Gooch provided the tour for the children and could not say enough about their behavior.

“I was so impressed with how well-behaved those students were,” he said. “They were polite, they were inquisitive, they raised their hands to talk. And, if it ever got a little noisy, the teacher just held up her hand with the fingers extended and counted down 5-4-3-2-1 as she closed each finger. Before she got to the end, you could have heard a pin drop.

“I wish I’d known about that when my kids were little!” After a tour of the vault, the children got to go behind the tellers’ cage, where they saw how the pneumatic tubes work at the drive-thru windows. They also watched as a pile of coins was dropped into a sorter. They were told about the numerous layers of glass at the drive-thru teller windows.

“While it’s not actually bullet-proof, it is thick enough that the chances of a bullet getting through that glass are very slim,” Gooch said. Each child was given a gold dollar coin and a pencil twisted into a dollar sign. They even sang two songs about money before having their picture taken with Gooch and other bank staff.

he Uptown Shop, which recently moved to 129 No. York St., the former site of Leonard’s Men’s Store across from what used to be Plass Appliances, has evolved into a high-end luxury gift shop one might find in a hotel lobby. “In 2004 to 2005 or so, the shop was leased in sections and each space belonged to a different person, so everyone could do their own thing and that’s why the store looked sort of messy, with furniture everywhere,” said owner Kathleen. “For the last ten years or so, it’s been much better, but this location is better yet.” Kathleen explained that the layout of the floor at the new location has wider aisles, making it more stroller-friendly. It’s also easier for workers to see the entire store so as people come in, they can spot custom-

for Mother’s Day, a jewelry line called Alex and Ani offers a wide selection of charm bangles – stackable bangle bracelets with charms of various themes such as Mother, Sister, Sailboats, or the Tree of Life. The shop also carries Trollbeads, a large selection of Vera Bradley bags, and accessories and stationery from the Kate Spade line.

There is a men’s line of personal care products from Duke Cannon, including an item called “Offensively Large Lip Balm.” The shop carries water bottles and thermos containers from a company called Corkcicle that keeps liquids cold for as long as 12 hours, Kathleen said. One such vessel is the perfect size to hold a full bottle of wine! At the check-out desk, shoppers will find the Lokia bracelet. These simple pieces are primarily made of clear silicone beads, except two — one bead is pure white, another is black. According to Kathleen, the white bead contains snow from Mt. Everest; the black bead has mud from the Dead Sea. “So what you have is a little something from the highest point as well as the lowest point on Earth,” she explained. “It’s supposed to keep you in perfect balance.” Hours at the shop are Mon., Tue. and Wed. from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Thurs. and Fri., 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and, Sundays 12 noon to 3 p.m. For more information, call 630832-9200 or visit UptownShop. com.

ELMHURST — About 100 people gathered for a reception at Wilder Mansion on Thursday, April 28 to celebrate the new name and new logo for the Elmhurst WalkIn Ministry, which will be the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (EWAN). The official rollout of the name takes place on May 1. Because the agency used the marketing students at Elmhurst College, designing new materials was cost-effective, according to EWIM/EWAN executive director Jackie Crnkovich. The class who worked on the project came up with six different ideas for the logo which were then presented to the Board of Directors. The student whose design was chosen was Erin Bartholomew, a junior at Elmhurst College who is also an Elmhurst resident. Bartholomew was also honored at the reception. “The board was truly impressed by how good their work was,” Crnkovich said. “The students all put a lot into this project and choosing the winning look from among their designs was difficult, but in the end, we could only use one,” The board felt Bartholomew’s logo best reflected the mission and spirit of EWIM, soon to be EWAN.

About 75 people came to Wilder Mansion on Thursday, April 28 to support the Elmhurst Walk-In Ministry and its recent name change to the Elmhurst WalkIn Assistance Network (EWAN) effective May 1. Lincoln on soft lockdown after bullet found in restroom Classes carry on as police, evidence techs investigate By Dee Longfellow For The Elmhurst Independent

ELMHURST — According to the City of Elmhurst, the Elmhurst Police Department was summoned to Lincoln Elementary School on the morning of Friday, April 29, to investigate after a small caliber bullet was found in one of the bathrooms. The school was under a soft lockdown while police conducted a search. Instruction

continued as usual in the classrooms, but movement throughout the building was restricted. The origin of the bullet was finally identified about 10:30 a.m. The investigation revealed that the bullet was originally found on the outdoor playground. Police oversaw evidence technicians who used metal detectors to ensure that all evidence had been found and the playground and school were returned to safety. Police stated that there was no danger to anyone at the school and that classes could proceed. As a precaution, and to reassure parents and students, police remained at the school until dismissal.

Park Board to resurface tennis, roller hockey courts at Eldridge ELMHURST — In a perfect world, surfaces would last forever and we would never need to replace courts, driveways, and paths but that is far from the truth here in the Midwest. Every year the Park District reviews conditions of all courts in the District, and this year identified that severe cracking and surface issues due to heavy usage and aging, make the courts at Eldridge Park the priority for 2016. Police unveil new vehicle: An ATV complete with sirens and lights

That’s Sergeant Matt Himpelmann in the driver’s seat of the Elmhurst Police Department’s new all-terrain vehicle, but he’s not heading to the golf course. He’s demonstrating the ATV recently obtained by the Department, thanks to a grant from Union Pacific. While it’s outfitted like a “real” police car (including sirens and flashing lights!), the car can go places a “real” police car can’t, such as along the Illinois Prairie Path.

Don’t wish it away… traffic, development, long waits are a good thing

I

magine the York Titans in purple and silver taking the field at the MidDuPage Community School. Every now and then I get on my high horse about life in Iowa, especially in times like these – when new development is cropping up all around us, causing inconvenience to drivers, workers, shoppers and others who frequent the downtown area. Something has to be said again because too many people are looking at these new growth opportunities as bad things, that they’ll cause “too much traffic.” Even a Zoning Commissioner recently commented, “how much more traffic can we take?” The answer is, as much as will come. Why? Because, trust me, you don’t want the opposite. My small town in Iowa had 2500 people back in the 1960s, a brand new elementary school, a brand new high school (from which my class was the first ever to graduate – in both cases), a new community swimming pool and its one-and-only traffic light (we had stop signs, but just one red-

Under my father’s fedora... Dee Longfellow

Editor yellow-green light), stopping traffic flowing along Highway 20, a major thoroughfare that still crosses the entire state. (Ask the RAGBRAI folks, if you don’t believe it.) Those days – from 19501975 – were the heyday for Rockwell City, the very LeaveIt-To-Beaver town nestled in farmland that transported farm kids in on buses. We townies had to walk. Before you gripe about the train, imagine if it stopped coming altogether. We used to get annoyed walking to downtown Rockwell City because frequently, you had to wait for freight trains to pass. Soon, the

trains stopped coming. Eventually, the tracks were actually removed. Annoying as it was to get caught by that traffic light on Highway 20, it was soon replaced with a stop sign. Now, there’s nothing there at all to stop traffic from passing right by the town I once called home. We often grumble about the fact we can’t park right in front of our downtown destination. Well, you sure can in Rockwell City. The few restaurants and shops that are left often have plenty of parking right in front. That’s is because no one comes there any more. Then there’s the high school. In the 1989-90 school year, Rockwell City High merged with another school in a town called Lytton (whose slogan, by the way, used to be emblazoned on a water tower reading, “Hottest Little Town for Business West of Chicago.”) Really?? Who decided that? Doubt it’s true any more! The school changed its name to “Southern Cal” – for southern Calhoun County – not California! Now the school is known as

State Senator explains support of stop-gap funding legislation I joined my Senate colleagues on April 22 in unanimously approving two bipartisan measures to bridge funding both for higher education and for critical human services. The proposals aren’t ideal solutions, but they represent compromise and include the needed financing for the programs. It is important to note that this stop-gap funding for higher education and human services resulted from cooperation and productive conversation between legislators, legislative leaders and the Governor. The measure we unanimously approved contains funding

from the Education Assistance Fund: more than $350 million for state universities; more than $74 million for community colleges; more than $169 million for Monetary Award Program (MAP) grants; and $6 million for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. This funding will have an immediate impact on the lives of Illinois’ residents. The Senate also approved a measure that appropriates $600 million from the Education Assistance Fund to higher education and $441 million from the Commitment to Human Services Fund to help pay for critical human services programs. This proposal is

currently pending in the House of Representatives. During this process, my Senate Republican colleagues and I fought to ensure that any budget bills advanced be fully funded, and not provide a false promise like other measures recently advanced by Democrat legislative leaders. The challenges aren’t over and debate will continue. But these measures demonstrate Illinois lawmakers’ interest in resolving the state’s issues. I look forward to getting more work done together, especially enacting a responsible full budget. Chris Nybo State Senator, 24th District

South Central Calhoun Community School and includes Rockwell City, Lytton, Lohrville, Lake City and Jolley. (Yes, there’s a Jolley, Iowa – every now and then, an obituary reads: “Jolley man dies.”) All of those towns were smaller than RC to begin with, so if RC’s population has been reduced by one-third – from 2500 to 1700 last I heard – the others must have fewer than 1000 residents. Besides that, the sports team is no longer the Wildcats, but is now the Titans; school colors that used to be blue and white are now purple, black and silver. Imagine if York merged with Willowbrook in Villa Park, Addison Trail, Fenton in Bensenville, or any or all of the Glenbard Schools and became Central DuPage High School. Imagine if we no longer wore green and white, but suddenly wore silver and purple. Imagine if York teams were no longer the Dukes but were suddenly, the Titans. Worse yet, what if Central DuPage High was located in Lombard or Bensenville and

Elmhurst kids had to be bussed there!? Never, you say? It couldn’t happen? Well, it can and did in small-town Iowa. Despite the homey appeal of Elmhurst, you do not want to wish away the traffic, street lights, bulging school attendance, the inability to park right in front of your destination, or even the inconvenience of detours and congestion as new buildings are under construction. Rockwell City would kill or die for new construction. Or holding classes in annex buildings due to the number of students. Or a traffic jam (that doesn’t include a tractor). Or having to wait for a train. Or having to park and walk, the need for a parking deck. If you don’t support development, you have no right to complain about taxes. New development brings new residents and new business and they all help split the tax bill with the rest of us who enjoy living here. Don’t wish it away. And, as I always say: “Don’t make fun of Iowa with your mouth full.”

The city and park district are also discussing the amount of fencing to be placed at the basin site.

Systems had not done enough testing to its software system prior to releasing it. He said the trouble in February seemed to be related to the amount of CPUs (central processing units) dedicated to the registration system. At the time of the Feb. 20 spring/ summer registration, the park district’s registration system had eight CPUs. Rogers said that was the amount of CPUs recommended by Vermont Systems. The CPUs devoted to the district’s registration system have since been tripled to 24. The district has conducted recent tests on its system. Commissioner Ennis, who served on the ad hoc committee formed to examine the problems with the Feb. 20 registration, said he is confident the online registration system will be much more responsive to consumers during the upcoming registration on May 7.

Online issue fixed, should be working Bid for HVAC at Courts Plus when May 7 registration begins awarded to Trane Board members also discussed the recent upgrades to the district’s online registration system. The district made the upgrades after the system failed to perform at acceptable speeds during the first day of spring/summer registration on Feb. 20. The district has since worked with its registration software vendor—Vermont Systems Inc.—to improve the process. Rogers said that Vermont

Board members voted unanimously to award a contract of nearly $64,000 to Trane of Willowbrook, to replace the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment of the racquet area at Courts Plus. The equipment has reportedly reached the end of its useful life. The district’s contract with Trane also calls for the addition of supply and return ductwork into the main hallways.

Almost $88,000 budgeted to replace lights in tennis area Board members also voted unanimously to approve a contract of nearly $88,000 to replace the lighting fixtures to the tennis area at Courts Plus. The contract with Wesco of Woodridge calls for the purchase of 62 light-emitting diode (LED) light fixtures for the six indoor tennis courts at Courts Plus. The 62 LED fixtures will replace the 72 existing 1,000watt fixtures. The new energy efficient fixtures, which have a five-year warranty, will reportedly reduce electric power consumption by up to 62 percent and yield energy and maintenance savings of more than $25,000 per year.

This problem, which may arise from abnormal skeletal growth or habits such as tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, or extended pacifier use, can result in difficulty biting, chewing, and swallowing. If left untreated, an open bite can lead to even more serious problems, including jaw joint popping and jaw pain. The first step in correcting this malocclusion rests with identifying its cause and correcting it. When a harmful habit is the culprit, the orthodontist can either educate the patient or intervene with an orthodontic appliance that breaks the habit before starting treatment. Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to clean. The spine curvature disorder “lordosis” is characterized by excess inward curvature of the lower back. As a result, when looking at people with lordosis from the side, their lower backs form a defined “C” shape. and they appear to be sticking out their stomachs and buttocks. This abnormal curvature of the spine can lead to excess pressure being exerted on the spine, which leads to pain. While lordosis can appear in childhood (“benign juvenile lordosis”) without any identifiable cause, it can also affect people of any age for reasons that include poor posture, obesity, osteoporosis, intervertebral disc disorder, and kyphosis (excessive outward curvature at the mid-back), among others. Treating underlying causes helps reduce associated pain, muscle spasms,

tingling, or numbness.

Doctors of Chiropractic are not only trained in problems dealing with the spine, but we are also formally educated in clinical examination and diagnosis of the entire human body. Through the use of conservative, non-surgical, drug-free care, YORK CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC provides chiropractic treatment from acute symptomatic relief to wellness care. Call 630.834.8536 to schedule an appointment. You have nothing to lose – and vibrant health to gain. We’re located at 486 Spring Road.

Obsession with smartphones getting out of hand

O

ver the course of my lifetime (I’m in my 50s; just turned another year older on Tuesday) I’ve seen the standard telephone morph into today’s smartphone—which, if you ask me, should replace one of the Seven Wonders of the World, given the awe and reverence (and attachment) most people have for their particular device. I started out on a rotary dial phone as a tot in the 1960s, then moved to a touch-tone phone, adding a message machine during the 1980s, a cell phone in the early 2000s, and finally plunging into the world of smartphones (with some apprehension) just before July 4, 2014. As our nation approaches its 240th birthday this summer, it makes me wonder what the Founding Fathers would have done after signing the Declaration of Independence if smartphones were all the rage in 1776. Let me guess: Ben Franklin takes out his iPhone 6S with its force-sensitive touchscreen, 3D Touch and second-

Sandro Sez... Mike Sandrolini Columnist generation fingerprint recognition, gathers John Adams, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, et.al., around him … and snaps a half-dozen selfies. Call it revisionist history. Once I purchased my smartphone, I told more than one friend that I would never take a selfie. Proudly, that vow has never been broken. I posed the following question in a previous rant on this page concerning selfies, but it bears repeating: What is the fascination with sticking your phone 20 inches from your face and snapping a pic? Call me a middle-age curmudgeon (believe me: I’ve been called much worse by readers over the years), but to me, taking

selfies is the embodiment of narcissism. Consider two recent examples: First, a man wearing what was later determined to be a fake suicide explosive belt hijacked an EgyptAir flight from Alexandria to Cairo, diverting the flight to Cyprus. He was reportedly unstable and distraught over issues involving his estranged wife. The alleged hijacker held passengers and crew members hostage, eventually releasing several. Well, a story in the Daily Telegraph reported that one of the last passengers to be released, a 26-year-old British man, asked one of the crew members to ask the alleged hijacker if he could take a selfie with him. And the hijacker agreed. So here’s this jamoke with a stupid grin on his face standing next to the suspect who, mind you, is still wearing what was believed to be a suicide explosive belt. Let’s proceed to Exhibit B of selfie self-absorption, which I find far more infuriating than

the smilin’ Brit striking a pose with a suspected hijacker. In February, it was widely reported that a group of beachgoers in Argentina grabbed a baby Franciscan dolphin, considered to be close to extinction, out of the water. Then, several of the beachgoers passed the dolphin around—to take selfies with it. Their seemingly unquenchable thirst for selfies apparently satisfied for the moment, the baby dolphin was set down in the sand. It died. What I’d prefer to call these egocentric fools can’t be printed in a family newspaper. I could go on about other instances out on the highways and byways of Chicagoland to further illustrate society’s preoccupation with smartphones. For instance, the time I approached a four-way stop on West Street in Elmhurst, north of North Avenue. There was only north- and southbound traffic; vehicles at the four-way stop were neither in the eastbound nor westbound lanes. Well before I stopped, I noticed the first

vehicle in the southbound lane remained stopped, with four vehicles behind it. At least 30 seconds had passed. “Why aren’t they going?” I mumbled under my breath. As I proceeded northbound—that lead vehicle remained stopped, mind you—I took a quick glance inside the vehicle and noticed the driver looking down at their smartphone. Just as I was about to lose hope that more of suburbia’s population was becoming victims of the smartphone zombie apocalypse, I ran into a fellow the other night at a local establishment whom I’ve known for quite a while. Following a few minutes of chit-chat, he reached into his back pocket. In his hand was a retro model flip phone. He mentioned that he had been using a smartphone, but traded it in for the flip phone. I know of several beachgoers in Argentina who should be forced to turn in their smartphones and use dumb phones from now on.

Local resident’s art to appear in EC Capstone project Elmhurst’s own Shayna Lacy among nine chosen to be part of 48th Annual Exhibition

ELMHURST —Elmhurst College senior Shayna Lacey, a resident of Elmhurst, will present her culminating art project dur-

ing the Elmhurst College Art Department’s 48th Annual Spring Capstone Art Exhibition. Lacey’s concept for her four oil paintings is the connection between the four elements and the energy humans share. The high point for every graduating art major, the Capstone Exhibition requires students to create a body of work in their area of concentration, then plan the exhibition and design all of the promotional materials for it.

This year’s exhibition features the work of nine art students working in a variety of media, including ceramics, multimedia, oil painting, photography, silk screening and graphic design. It will be on display from May 7 – 28 in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center and in the Barbara A. Kieft Accelerator ArtSpace. A public reception will be held on May 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in both locations. Admission to view the exhibit and to attend the reception is free.

Sugar Creek Junior Golf program off to a great start

ELMHURST — The golf industry may be suffering across the country, unable to attract young golfers to the game, but Sugar Creek Golf Course is a definite exception. The summer of 2016 will be a busy one for junior golfers at Sugar Creek. Registration for junior golf programs, including golf camp, lessons, and programs, opened on February 20, 2016 and to date, 400 young golfers have registered. Sugar Creek added 100-participant capacity in 2015 to accommodate more golfers and also moved to an online registration system with the goal of making it easier and faster, so parents can avoid long lines and hand-written paperwork. In 2010 Sugar Creek Golf Course was one of only three facilities in Illinois named a Top 100 Play Golf America facility by the PGA America.

onald Wilki was recently recognized by the York Township as part of its “Remember When” campaign to honor some of the veterans living in the area. Wilki is a resident of Elmhurst Born and raised in Chicago, Donald Wilki was drafted into the Army in September 1951. He attended basic training at Indian Town Gap, Penn., then deployed to Seattle, where he boarded a ship for Japan. The next stop was Seoul, Korea, where Wilki was assigned to the 45th Infantry Division as a replacement for a company clerk. Wilki received training in typing and studied administrative duties. He learned SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) of the Army, regulations, Army jargon and how to handle correspondence. After graduating, he was assigned to “H” Company and eventually earned the rank of Corporal. Wilki was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service for his extraordinary skill as company clerk, despite being in a combat situation. He also earned the Combat Infantry Badge. One of his memories from that time of his life happened on the night of June 21, 1952, when he was involved in what he called a “big fire fight.” While acting as the ammo bearer for two other soldiers, they were bombarded by the Chinese, as Wilki fed the mortars to the men. The crew fired hundreds of rounds from 6:30 p.m. until 4 a.m. the following morning. As enemy shells fell – John Valle closer, the crew worked faster. “We worked too fast to be frightened,” Wilki said. “The gun barrel grew so hot that a shell popped out from the accumulation of gases and landed nearby. Luckily, it was a dud.” “After the firing stopped, I was tired but it was a feeling of accomplishment when we stopped the enemy.” Wilki returned to the States in June 1953 and was stationed at Camp Crowder in Missouri until he was discharged. Now a retired Highway Engineer for Cook County, Donald and his wife Pat were married for more than 50 years until Pat passed away last year. They have three children and six grandchildren. Donald belongs to Veteran organizations and presently is active at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elmhurst. “They and all my comrades are in my daily prayers.” Wilki said. “York Township is proud of Don Wilki and we just wanted to express our gratitude for his service to our country by honoring him in our ‘Remember When’ display at Township Hall,” said York Township Supervisor John Valle. Any veteran living in York Township who would like to share their pictures and stories about serving our country are invited to contact the Senior Center at 630-620-2424. “We will display them in the glass case on the lobby wall in Township Hall,” Valle said. “We are proud of our men and women who served to make this country as great as it is.” In addition to your story, the Township would like a photo of you during your time of service as well as a current photo, so people can see you Then and Now.

Legislation in House lets local government decide about townships Effort began by Governor’s executive order signed in 2015 By Dee Longfellow For The Independent

ELMHURST — In a release received from the office of State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park), the Independent learned that legislation is currently being considered in the Illinois House of Representatives to allow local government to make the decision on the consolidation of townships, which will save taxpayer dollars and reduce the size of government. While DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin has been

touting the benefits of dissolving township government, this action will put the decision in the hands of local community government. Conroy said she would be supporting the measure. “Illinois has more units of local government than any other state in the country,” she said. “There is still more to be done to reduce waste and ensure that tax dollars are being spent efficiently, and this bill helps to achieve that goal.” While there is no mechanism currently on the books to eliminate township government, Senate Bill 388 would give local voters the power to merge

Industrial accident causes no injuries Pictured is the Elmhurst 255 building, also known as the Hahn St. development, where a scaffold appears to dangle precariously above the street. York St. was closed for about two hours on Wednesday, April 27, after the equipment slipped out of place, but luckily no one was injured. According to workers at the scene, it was the masonry company’s work structure that malfunctioned. Elmhurst police and fire officials were on the scene to assist with closing the street and ensuring the safety of workers and observers.

Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti. With nearly 7,000 separate government entities, including state, county,

One of the first taxing bodies Cronin addressed was the DuPage Water Commission, which was running a deficit when he was first elected County Board Chairman. As bright as the news was in February of 2015, the state still faces numerous financial woes. “We can’t cut our way out of debt,” Rauner said. “We need to bring in more revenue to make Illinois more attractive to businesses.”

On Wednesday, April 27, the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI) held its annual Spring Luncheon and Expo at the Diplomat West. Each year, the luncheon offers a salute to a different industry and this year’s selection was those members working in finance and insurance. Following a welcome by ECCI president & CEO John R. Quigley, Board Chair Tim Gurrie offered greetings, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Andrea Pokrefke of Suburban Bank & Trust and an Invocation offered by Cathy Bajkowski of CB Health Insurance. After lunch, Quigley gave a special

presentation to Marilyn K. Gaston, director of finance for the City of Elmhurst, who is retiring as of May 1. Gaston has been a positive influence on the City and its finances for the past 27 years she has been employed there, earning numerous awards and recognition. She was highly praised by elected officials at a recent City Council meeting. Honorees were each called forward to be presented with a certificate and for a photo. More than 30 companies were recognized. The event was sponsored by Suburban Bank & Trust (SBT), Thrivent Financial and Turner Acceptance Corporation. Sponsors of the Expo were SBT and Yoga By Degrees.

“By finding a sunscreen you like that suits your activities, you’ll be more apt to apply it often.” Kirkpatrick notes that with so many choices, finding sunscreen that works best for your lifestyle and properly applying it can be confusing. Luckily, some brands are helping simplify selection. For example, BullFrog now segments sunscreens according to the activity and environment in which they will be used. these quick tips for maximum skin protection: • Broad-spectrum sunscreens contain both UVA and UVB protection. Select one with an SPF of at least 30 and apply evenly 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors. One ounce is the right quantity to cover the whole body. Don’t forget ears, back of neck, hands, tops of feet and top of the head, if exposed. Reapply every two hours and after swimming, sweating and towel drying. • Going swimming? Use sunscreen engineered for water resistance. The hydrophobic polymers contained in BullFrog Water Sport make it a good option for intense water sports. Or toss some Ocean Potion into your beach bag -- the brand’s new H20 Sport SPF 50 spray has an oil-free, instant dry formula and is PABA- and paraben-free. Whatever sunscreen you opt for, don’t forget to reapply after exiting the water. • If you’re playing a sport where you need to keep hands grease-free, use an alcohol-based gel that dries quickly. (StatePoint) Protecting skin from the sun is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Unfortunately, many people fail to take sufficient measures year-round, but especially in summer when skin exposure tends to be at its peak. Men can be particularly neglectful. Indeed, fewer than 15 percent of men use sunscreen regularly when outside for more than an hour, according to the Center for Disease Control. “This summer, make sun care a habit,” urges Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick of the Brevard Skin and Cancer Center.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team on a roll Knights win third-place game at ICCP-Timothy Christian tournament

By Mike Miazga Correspondent

hings are starting to fall into place at the right time of the year for the IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team. As of late last week the Knights were on a three-game winning streak. In recent action, IC Catholic Prep edged Hinckley-Big Rock 4-3, scored a 4-0 win overAurora Central Catholic and won 2-1 over crosstown neighbor Timothy Christian in the third-place game of the ICCP-Timothy Christian tournament. The Timothy win put the Knights at 8-6-3 overall. In the win against Hinckley, freshman Olivia Hurt had two goals. Grace Fuller and Katie Hendricks each had one goal. In the win against ACC, Hurt had three goals, while Hendricks had one goal. Fuller and Liz Maloney each had a goal in the win against Timothy. “We played a solid team defensive game,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Tom Schergen, talking about the Timothy victory. “We stayed strong on defense and took the opportunity to attack when it presented itself.” Schergen credits the team’s recent surge partially to having an almost fullstrength roster. “The weekend before we had 14 of 22 players available due

to injury and prom,” he said. “Against Timothy we were close to being completely healthy. I thought the Timothy game was a complete team effort from the defense to the midfield to the forwards. Everybody played a part.”

IC Catholic Prep also has enjoyed strong play from freshman goalie Gabby Smola. “She’s solidified things in the back for us,” said Schergen. “She’s been on a roll. We’re playing the hot hand.”

Schergen added the team also has improved things on the chemistry end with players from all four grade levels coming together. “We’re at a point now where they are used to each other,” he said. “That blending process where you have the seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen coming together is coming to fruition.” Hurt had seven goals in a recent four-game stretch and as of last week was leading the team in goals with 14. “Olivia has come into her own,” said Schergen. “She’s always been a threat, but now she’s figuring out when to make the most impact and is taking advantage of scoring opportunities.” The coach also lauded the work of central defenders Kaitlyn Grady and Tess Reardon. “Those two have been healthy all year,” said Schergen. “They have been our rock. They have been a solid force all year in the back. They’ve played every game back there and have more than held their own.” IC Catholic Prep played St. Edward and Guerin Prep earlier the week at home. Saturday is the annual IC Catholic Prep-Timothy Christian Crosstown Cup events. The girls soccer teams will play at 10 a.m. at Lewis Stadium (at Plunkett Park). The two baseball teams follow at noon. The IC Catholic Prep and Timothy softball teams will play a doubleheader at 10 a.m. at Plunkett, while sophomore baseball starts at 10 a.m. as well. “Three home games in a row is wellneeded after a lot of traveling the last few weeks,” said Schergen.

York boys water polo team earns No. 1 sectional seed Dukes’ boys gymnastics team preparing for postseason By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The York boys water polo team was 15-6-2 overall and 4-1 in West Suburban Conference action through late last week. The Dukes recently beat No. 10 ranked (by www.illpolo.com) Neuqua Valley by a 9-7 score. Through late last week York was ranked No. 13 in the state. The Dukes also scored a recent 14-4 win over Palatine. York has received a recent boost from Luke Nowak. “Luke has been our secondleading scorer over the past two weeks,” coach Brian Drumm said. “He is more of a defensive-minded player so it’s exciting that he’s putting the ball in the net now as well. He gets better by the day. He led us in scoring (last week), which is something he has never done before. He was our most improved player last year and keeps getting better.” Tim Evely was leading the team in goals, while Tyler McKenna was tops in assists and steals. “Individual players are improving their personal games,” said Drumm. “For instance, Luke Nowak and Jordan Jopes have been our main defenders and now they

are scoring goals. Danny Stumpf and Alex Marlott have been offensive presences for us, but now their steals totals are up. The offense has improved. Everyweek a new guy starts scoring more consistently.” Jopes is back from a knee injury. “Jordan’s return has been important to our success,” said Drumm. “He can defend anyone in the state one-on-one.” McKenna continues to excel in net for the Dukes. “Tyler has been tremendous,” said Drumm. “He is one of the best passers in the state and has been solid all season in goal.” York recently received the No. 1 seed in its sectional. “There are some very good teams in our sectional who also have their eyes on the sectional title,” said Drumm. “Fenwick and Oak Park-River Forest are solid teams with dangerous players and they’re both well-coached. Curie and St. Patrick can’t be overlooked either. It will be a very competitive tournament.” York boys gymnastics The York boys gymnastics team has seen recent tangible results stemming from its season-long improvement. John Gill recently took second on rings at the Ken Scorza invitational. Gill scored an 8.4 in that event. He also won the rings competition at the Jeff Levin sophomore invitational with that same 8.4 score. Kelvin Stevens placed third

on parallel bars at the Jeff Levin invitational with an 8.6 score. As a team, York took fifth at the Ken Scorza with a 132.8 score. The Dukes also scored a 131.6 in a recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division triangular meet with Glenbard West and Downers Grove North. “We have really improved on rings, p-bars and pommel horse over the last several weeks,” said York coach Alex Banasiak. “Consistency has substantially improved leading to an increase in those events by around a point each.” In addition to Stevens and Gill, both sophomores, classmate Jake Anderson also has taken steps forward in recent times. “They have improved their all-around scores by several points since the beginning of the year,” said Banasiak. Senior Michael Stumpf also has been a constant in several events. “Michael has been a rock on floor and vault and has not missed a set all year,” said Banasiak. “This consistency has been infectious to the rest of the team.” York will head to the Glenbard West sectional on Friday. “I have really enjoyed seeing the team grow together,” said Banasiak. “The underclassmen have been asked to fill big holes left from last year and have done a fantastic job filling in the gaps.”

a pair of recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division games. In a 6-0 loss to Oak ParkRiver Forest, the Dukes were limited to three hits. Phil Schlitter had a double. Josh Hovance had a hit and a stolen base, while Frank Romano also had a hit. Matt Riecker took the loss. He pitched three innings and struck out four. Brennan McGovern pitched the final four innings and fanned four. York also lost a 7-6 backand-forth contest to Hinsdale Central. Timothy Christian baseball team records victory against Fenton Brush’s two doubles spark come-from-behind triumph By Mike Miazga Correspondent

Fenton led 2-0 in the first inning, but Timothy trimmed the score to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning. Jimmy Allen singled and advanced to third on Josh Anderson’s hit-andrun single. York girls soccer team wins pair of games Dukes continue to get contributions from cast of many By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The York girls soccer team went 2-1 during a recent three-game stretch. The Dukes recorded an 8-0 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win against Proviso West and also scored a 2-1 WSC crossover win against Hinsdale South. York lost 2-0 to Downers Grove South in WSC Silver play. The 2-1 mark put York at 6-7 overall and 1-3 in WSC Silver play. Dukes interim coach Stevan Dobric was particularly pleased with the squad’s play against Hinsdale South. “It was a great team effort for a win against Hinsdale South,” he said. On the individual level, Jenna Lundgren, Maggie Bleyer, Gaby Uribe, Madison Casey and Jenna Dvorak each had three goals or more. Mady Schiller, Bailey Stearns, Cassidy Privett and Kristen Viola each had a goal or more. Ffyon Hund, Schiller, Bleyer, Lundgren, Uribe, Rachel Teague and Viola each had two assists or more.

“We have really improved our intensity and desire to be to the ball first,” said Dobric. The coach likes the progress he’s seen on both ends of the field. “We have a strong team offense and have been unable to score against only two opponents this season,” said Dobric. “On defense, we have a much better shape and continue to work as 11 on the field.” York has benefitted from the strong play of goalies Ellen Foley and Amanda Healy. “Our goalies have done a fantastic job this season and will be greatly missed next year (both seniors),” said Dobric. Dobric also has seen Schiller take her game to another level. “Mady has really shown improvement,” he said. “Her positive energy, desire to improve and willingness to do her best for the team is amazing.” Dobric noted York has improved while playing a steady of dose of strong teams. “We have played a very tough schedule this season and have learned many lessons that will only make us stronger going into the playoffs,” he said. “We are a very strong team and will always support each other on and off the field. As a team, the girls are very excited to show what they can do in the playoffs.”

the league win. Charlie O’Brien exploded for six goals and an assist in the Marmion win. Brendan O’Brien added three goals and an assist, while Max Czyzycki had two goals and an assist. IC Catholic Prep coach Tom O’Brien noted a key in the game was moving Pat Guinan into the faceoff position in the second half. IC Catholic Prep held a 7-3 faceoff edge in the second half after Marmion held a 9-6 advantage in the first half. Guinan also led the team in the game with 10 ground balls. Garrett Cheng added seven ground balls, while Gavin Gecsey had six ground balls. Through late last week, Char-

lie O’Brien was leading the team in goals with 27. Czyzycki had 15 goals, while Troy Simonides had 11 balls. Guinan was leading the team in ground balls with 59. Brendan O’Brien had 33 ground balls and Gecsey had 28. Sam Buffo was the team leader in assists with 13. The Knights had one conference match scheduled this week against Montini. After playing Montini, IC Catholic Prep heads to Aurora to face Waubonsie Valley on Thursday, May 12 and Downers Grove to face Downers Grove South on Saturday, May 14. The Knights return home Monday, May 16 at 7 p.m. against West Chicago.

Timothy Christian boys tennis team scores key win over Illiana Trojans were off to 12-0 start By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The Timothy Christian boys tennis team faced a pair of recent tough challenges. And both times the Trojans conquered said challenges. Timothy recorded a 5-0 win over Metro Suburban Conference East Division rival Illiana Christian and also scored a 3-2 MSC crossover win against Glenbard South. Both Illiana and Glenbard South were unbeaten going into their matches withTimothy. The two wins moved the Trojans to a perfect 12-0 overall and the Illiana win bumped their conference record to 4-0. In the Glenbard South match, Timothy’s Nathan Daniels was a 6-3, 7-6 winner at No. 1 singles. That victory secured the team win for the Trojans. In other recent action, Timothy was fourth at the St. Charles East invitational. Daniels was second at No. 1 singles. Daniels was 11-1 through late last week and had wins over Ty Krill and James Zandstra, both state qualifiers a year ago. “Nate worked hard all winter on his game and has only lost to Nate Dell from Glenbard West,” explained Timothy Christian coach Keith Mills. “He has looked strong all season.” Mitch Evenhouse and Ben

}We have done a good job recently of getting motivated and focused for the tough matches.”

— Timothy Christian coach Keith Mills Lodewyk both were 13-1 mostly at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles. The No. 1 doubles team of Jared Rhiner and Jack Wells were 10-3 together. “We have done a good job recently of getting motivated and focused for the tough matches,” said Mills. “It had been an issue of staying focused and playing hard every point. The St. Charles East tournament was good. Every match was very competitive.” Another key contributor for Timothy of late has been Nick Silvia. “Nick has ben a key to our recent wins,” said Mills. “He started the season at second singles and then switched into doubles. He’s 9-1 in doubles playing all three positions. But because we have a lot of depth, he often plays third doubles where he has dominated with different partners.” Joel Daniels was moved up from the junior-varsity team to varsity and has played mostly No. 2 singles. Daniels is a sophomore. “Even though he has three losses at that position, Joel is

improving his game with more power on his serve and is putting away more shots,” said Mills. Mills is pleased with the renewed focus he’s seen in recent matches. “Overall, we knew we had a veteran team and should be tough to beat,” he said. “I have seen some slippage in play at times mostly in doubles due to a lack of focus. We have to improve our doubles consistency. Matches have been up and down. However, we have come through against the tough competition. Beating Illiana 5-0 is a big step toward the conference title. As far as the last third of the season, we have our sights set on going undefeated.” Timothy competes in the Fenton invitational this weekend and will head to the Lyons Township sectional for the postseason. “Nate (Daniels) should get a high seed (at the sectional) and have a good chance for state,” said Mills. “The doubles teams may have a shot as well depending on how we finish the next three weeks.”
