The sky above Berens Park had a colorful array of kites flying on Saturday, Aug. 6 when the Elmhurst Park District hosted the 3rd annual Kite Fest. There were games, music, even a hola hoop contest. The only disappointing “guest” that day was the wind, which came and went.
Sandburg Middle School invites the community to celebrate the recent passage of the new Annie LeGere Law, as well as the dedication of a tree in her honor, on Saturday, August 27, at 9:30 a.m. on the front lawn of the school, 345 E. St. Charles, Elmhurst. Annie was a Sandburg student who died last year from a severe allergic reaction. The foundation
established in her name worked with State Senator Chris Nybo, who represents Elmhurst, to sponsor the bill. This bill provides police and other public safety personnel with the ability to carry, administer, or help administer, epinephrine auto injectors if they have completed training. Experts say there is no doubt that this new law will save lives.

The End of an Era Coach Joe Newton: ‘This XC season to be my last’ Kern takes reins as Interim; level of mobility needed sidelines legendary icon By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT
To say it’s the “End of an Era” is an understatement. As they say, “you know the day’s coming, but you’re never prepared for it.” It might be the day you have to teach your teenager to drive or take the car keys away from an aging parent. That is the best way to describe the overall mood inside the Yorker Room at York High School on Wednesday afternoon, August 3, when a press conference was held for a special announcement from Joe Newton. Many speculate Newton might never retire for the simple reason that he never knows who’s coming up the ranks of the next class of participants in cross-country. Considering all outstanding young men he has coached over the years, every now and then, an outstanding runner like Don Sage, Sean McNamara, or Andrew Smith comes into the fold. Next year, there could be someone even better. Therefore, Joe Newton can’t retire! Or can he? Apparently he can and will after this upcoming fall season of cross country, as it was announced on Aug. 3 Newton did not attend the press conference, it was his son Tom who made the announcement and read a statement from the long-time, wellloved coach. “It is with mixed emotions that I inform the City of Elmhurst, York Community High School, and all previous and future York Community High School Cross Country Runners, that my father, Coach Joe Newton will be retiring from coaching at the end of this season,” said Thomas Newton. “The last 60 years
have been the best years of his life and I can tell you that he truly believes that York High School and the Elmhurst community are the greatest places to be.” The main issue that forces the retirement is his limited mobility, which is a pretty big requirement for coaching cross country. But despite his limitations, Newton plans to “coach by phone,” son Tom said. “As you know, when coaching young high school athletes, a level of mobility is required to maintain a championship program,” the younger Newton continued. “I know that if my father’s mobility was such that he could keep up with the young men of the York High School Cross Country program, he would love nothing more than to continue with coaching. However, his mobility has been increasingly difficult to maintain at the level that is required to sustain such a program that he has built over the last six decades.” He went on to say the family had had numerous discussions about what is best for the XC program at York and all future York High School cross country runners. “We, the family, believe strongly that this is the best decision for all parties involved and that includes my father,” Tom said. He went on to praise the school and the program his father had made his own for the past 60 years. “I would also like to take this time to thank District #205 administrative personnel, York High School, the City of Elmhurst, parents of the runners who have come through the program, teachers who supported my father and the program, but most of all the men of the long green line for the love and support that they have given my father over the last sixty years,” said Tom. Charlie Kern takes reins as Interim Head Coach “What has made this decision possible is the thought that my dad’s successor would be none other than Mr. Charlie Kern,” Tom went on. “He will always be very special to

Slices of life
Chaos happens when you are out of sorts
Ever experience a day when things are slightly off kilter? When the normal becomes abnormal, often in an almost imperceptible way? The order of the universe is lagging, your controller fails to control and you’re thrown a degree (or two) off course. Thought processes and actions seem to be deregulated and your brain refuses to function in a straightforward, logical manner. If there’s a way to mess things up, or confuse them, you’ll do it – even with the simplest of endeavors. This condition is exponentiated if you are multi-tasking, and who among us isn’t? It’s like you are looking at a farsighted world through a nearsighted lens. Similar to a dog chasing its tail or a hamster running on one of those wheels – going through all the right motions, but getting nowhere. It can happen to the best of us. It happened to me last week. It started first thing in the morning, in the shower, but I didn’t know it at the time. I wasn’t yet aware I was functioning in the fogginess of an off-kilter day. My circumstance became apparent an hour or so later, when my newly washed hair clumped itself into a greasy mess, as though I’d forgotten to rinse out the conditioner. Which, unfortunately, I had. I didn’t have time to deal with my predicament because I had to taxi a kid to sports practice and satisfy an imminent need for ingredients to make a birthday cake for another one of the people I gave birth to.
By
JILL PERTLER Contributor
So I combed through the mass atop my head as best I could and hoped it didn’t look as bad as I thought it probably did. I rushed in and rushed out of the grocery store and thankfully didn’t see anyone I knew, because when I got home and took a look-see in the mirror I realized things were worse than I’d thought. I’d forgotten another grooming detail: makeup. I’m not a super model (not even close) but I don’t usually venture to the store without a little mascara and blush. When I realized my mistake, I (well) blushed. Before I could correct the situation, birthday boy had an imminent need to shower, so I grabbed my makeup kit and headed for the other bathroom. Before I got there, I was waylaid by an email issue and my attention shifted from my face to cyberspace. Foggy days are distracting like that. You don’t know if you are coming or going. The email was coming, but by the time I got it figured out, I was supposed to be going. To the dentist. With another kid. This time, however, I remembered about the makeup. I was in dire need of imminent application. There was just one issue. I’d car-
ried the kit from one bathroom to… Where? So, as I’m yelling at the one kid to brush his teeth, I’m in a frenzy, trying to retrace my steps to find where in the heck I put the makeup, which can’t work its magic on my face if it’s lost. On a normal day, I would remember where I’d put the makeup because normally a person keeps track of those sorts of things. But when you are out of sorts, chaos happens. And although you’ve created it, you are the last to figure it out so you keep getting yourself
into these hot little messes, which almost seem to beget one another and multiply the overall frazzlement. That is the nature of a scattered day – when your brain and your body operate as two separate entities and you are left somewhere in the middle to mop things up. Or to look for makeup, which I did find and I did apply prior to the dentist appointment, which we got to on time. (Whew.) Afterward, we returned home with a new toothbrush, dental floss and no cavities. The day was taking a turn for the better and I de-
cided to cut my losses. As far as I’m concerned there are a couple of things you can do to reduce the commotion of a foggy day. You can muscle through it, or you can escape, via a nap. I chose the latter. And I didn’t even mess it up. That’s almost as good as a new toothbrush and no cavities. But not quite. Amendment would allow voters, not parties, to reshape districts
We Illinoisans know a lot about an entrenched struggle between our two parties. Today, a word about our legislature. Under current law, the party in power can determine the shape and population of each legislative district, so that each one will include the maximum number of its supporters and locate its opponents in a less desirable district. That way,
they can continue their power and make it difficult indeed for another party to take over. As a result, we have some districts that are very oddly-shaped to say the least. An amendment has been readied for the ballot this fall, supported by the petition of many thousands of voters; the amendment would enable an independent, non-partisan body to re-shape the districts to best represent its residents. While there may yet be an issue in court on this, when it is on the ballot, it deserves the support of every voter who believes that we must be a democratic people - that is: not a Democratic people or a Republican people but a people who can then trust that election victors will have been elected democratically. Glasses break, beds shake as O’Hare impacts Elmhurst City vows to fight as it joins Noise Compatibility Commission
By Dan McLeister FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT
City Council voted to join the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission “in light of the ongoing, continuing negative impacts of airplane runway noise from O’Hare Field that are frequently articulated by residents.” A resident from N. Kenilworth said at an August 1st City Council meeting that it was almost like an earthquake as a shower curtain fell and glasses broke about 3 a.m. on a recent Saturday. City Manager Jim Grabowski told aldermen at the August 1st meeting that things were anything but quiet recently as changing airplane flight
patterns came over Elmhurst as part of a six-month airport plan to “fly quiet” by rotating routes over various suburbs. He said the Mayor and he would be writing a letter to the Commission to oppose the testing. “We are not waiting (for more runways to be added],” Mayor Steve Morley said. “We will be aggressive.” More runways are scheduled for 2020. Grabowski noted that runways would not be expanded until more gates are added. There is a $300 million proposal to add nine new gates. Alderman Bob Dunn (2nd Ward) stated that residents called him about
beds shaking and that there was a lot of chatter on social media. Alderman Norm Leader (2nd Ward) noted that he too had received a lot of calls about “low flying airplanes in the dead of night.” “We will continue to protest mightily,” he assured. The O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission was formed: To determine certain Noise Compatibility Projects and Programs to be implemented in the O’Hare area; To oversee an effective and impartial noise monitoring system; To advise the City of Chicago concerning O’Hare-related noise issues; To provide a forum for direct citi-

The O’Hare Noise Commission also shall cooperate with the City of Chicago in seeking agreements with the airlines using O’Hare and the FAA, as appropriate, with respect to aircraft noise mitigation and related matters.

DO YOU KNOW SQUAT? Whether teenagers are interested in strengthening their bodies for sports or they simply want to look more buff, many perform “squat lifts” as part of their weight training regimens. Starting from a standing position with a weighted barbell on the shoulders or above the head, a squat lift involves bending the knees and hips to lower the torso and accompanying weight and then returning to the upright position. While a “front squat” involves carrying the weight in front of the chest, a “back squat” entails placing weight on the shoulders behind the neck. X-ray analysis of squat lifts reveals that back squats put the lower spine in a more horizontal position, increasing the risk of stress fractures.
Chiropractic treatment is a strong choice for both preventative care and as treatment for injuries that have already occurred. At YORK CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC, we take a total look at the total picture and formulate lifestyle changes that will help you maintain your health. We have state-of-the-art equipment – let us help you. Please call 630.834.8536 to schedule an appointment. We’re located at 486 Spring Road, where our goal is to understand your needs.
P.S. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to stress fractures of the spine, which is an argument for finding an alternative exercise to squat lifts.

Because farsighted individuals see distant objects more clearly than near objects, they must often squint their eyes to read and perform other up-close tasks. Unless this refraction error is corrected with prescription lenses before a farsighted child reaches first grade, he or she is likely to lose ground on reading skills. This was the finding of the first large-scale study to examine farsightedness and reading readiness among 4- and 5-year-olds. It is estimated that 4 percent to 14 percent of preschool children have moderate farsightedness, which children rarely complain about because they are not aware that anything is wrong with their vision. Thus, it is highly recommended that parents schedule comprehensive eye exams for their preschoolers. Eye exams for children are extremely important. Experts say 5 to 10 percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. Early identification of a child’s vision problem is crucial because, if left untreated, some childhood vision problems can cause permanent vision loss. To learn more, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. We make exam findings easier and more accurate from toddlers to seniors. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Common signs of farsightedness include difficulty in concentrating on near objects, eye strain, fatigue and/or headaches after close work, aching or burning eyes, and irritability or nervousness after sustained concentration.

Boland way to straighten teeth. Instead of Licensed Specialist brackets andOrthodontic wires, Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners that patients wear over their teeth. Each set of aligners is designed to be worn for about two weeks before being replaced with the next in the series. To address the compliance issue with teens, Invisalign Teen employs wear indicators that fade from blue to clear as they are worn. Invisalign Teen may also come with special “eruption tabs” that help keep space open for unerupted teeth, making it possible to treat a wider range of conditions.

Judge’s ruling adds IBS to medical marijuana program ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) sufferers in Illinois soon may qualify for a medical cannabis card. A Cook County judge ruled that Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Director Nirav Shah must
reconsider his refusal to add IBS to Illinois’ medical cannabis pilot program. The judge, like the others in trials involving migraines and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), said Monday that the director based his

decision on his own study and not the recommendations of a state-appointed medical cannabis advisory board. Plaintiffs attorney Michael Goldberg agrees that the director is ignoring the advice of his own advisory board. “The advisory board has clearly said that there is therapeutic value to relieve the symptoms of IBS with medical cannabis,” Goldberg said.
Goldberg said many people with IBS are prescribed pain killers that can make the pain worse. “There are thousands of patients out there with legitimate conditions that are suffering when they’re being prescribed opioids,” Goldberg said. However, Goldberg said this judge left Shah more wiggle room to again deny the condition by allowing his own study to be presented to the advisory board. The evidence in
his study may be enough to sway the board to recommend against adding IBS to the list of approved conditions. The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders said IBS affects 10 to 15 percent of Americans. IDPH spokeswoman Melaney Arnold said the department is reviewing the order and considering its next steps.

House race, Madigan’s fate significant to Illinois’ future BY ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK
The journey to the November election has been dominated by a power struggle over the state’s budget between Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic supermajority in the General Assembly. Since taking office last year, Rauner has tried to introduce reform to the state, which hasn’t had a balanced budget since 2001. However, Springfield Democrats, led by House Speaker Michael Madigan, have blocked many of
Rauner’s ideas and insisted that the governor’s agenda would not be in the best interest of the middle class. With the election just months away, the importance of the House races cannot be understated. “House races are always critical, because what stands in the balance right now is whether or not the Democrats and Speaker Mike Madigan will maintain their supermajority,” said Paul Lisnek, political analyst for WGN-TV and host of Politics Tonight. Lisnek said as long as Democrats maintain the supermajority, they
have the power to undo anything Rauner vetoes. “People that look at the budget crisis and the state of Illinois’ finances are pretty much disgusted by the whole thing and sick of it all,” Lisnek said. “The problem is when they go to vote, very rarely does anyone throw out their own representative.” This election, 27 Democratic incumbents and 16 Republican incumbents are attempting to hold onto their House seats. In the Senate, there are 12 contested races. However, Democrats
in the senate have a larger margin, and don’t face the same level of threat to their supermajority as House Democrats. “Right now, the loss of a supermajority is just at the line and a loss of a couple of seats could be costly to the speaker – so some of those races become critical,” Lisnek said. In an attempt to break the supermajority, Rauner has renewed his call for legislative districts to be drawn by an independent commission instead of legislators. The governor also is pushing for term
limits. “Rauner talks about term limits and issues like that because what he’s trying to do is take power away from people who have been there forever,” Lisnek said. First elected in November 1970 to represent House District 22, Madigan has been House Speaker since 1983 with the exception of two years when Republicans gained control over the House, Madigan is the longest-serving House speaker in Illinois history and one of the longest-serving state House speakers in U.S. history.

American Legion Post to hold Community Military Ball By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT
According to a release received at the Independent last week, the Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187 will hold a Military Ball community fundraiser event on Saturday, September 10 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Post at 310 W. Butterfield Road in Elmhurst. This event will showcase military tradition and include a formal dinner and dancing. A short address by Medal of Honor recipient Allen James Lynch will highlight the formal part of the evening. Entertainment at cocktail hour and dinner will be provided by the Jazz Combo and the String Quartet from Elmhurst College. After dinner, guests can dance to the sounds of the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. According to Event Chair Bill Shanklin, the Legion hopes to raise awareness and funds for the Post, which provides many important services for our veterans and
active military personnel. Among many other services provided by the Legion are assistance for veterans and their families with VA benefits paperwork, community color guard services, color guard training, college scholarships Allen Lynch for members of Congressional Medthe community, al of Honor recipient and an annual Thanksgiving Day meal for naval recruits in basic training. “Our post is an important resource for our veterans, active duty military personnel and our community in general,” said Post Commander John Scudder. “Our members
have proudly served our country and our post provides needed support for them and their families. Our dining room and lounge are open to the public.” Scudder said he was especially proud of the Post’s annual Thanksgiving Day event. “Each Thanksgiving we host more than 200 Navy recruits in basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station,” he said. “Many community partners help us with the event, including the Elmhurst Public Library which provides computers for the recruits to communicate with their families. The recruits usually have little or no contact with their families during their approximately two month training program. Telephones, games and a traditional Thanksgiving dinner are also provided to these young folks volunteering to serve our nation.” Shanklin promises a first class event for all who attend. “We hope to expose attendees to some
military tradition they would normally not get to experience. Tickets for the formal/semi-formal event are available to the public,” he said. “In addition to the short formal program, attendees arriving before 6:30 p.m. will get to experience a formal military receiving line, including the opportunity to meet Medal of Honor recipient Allen Lynch. The formal dinner will include both prime rib and salmon and the event will feature an open bar. “I personally am looking forward to dancing to the sounds of the Elmhurst College Jazz Band after dinner. And I have a few surprises up my sleeve that will be sure to entertain all in attendance.” Tickets are $125 each or $1000 for a table of ten. There will be free valet parking that evening. A recent measure signed by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to make small amounts of cannabis possession a civil offense rather than a criminal one says it could save the state’s prisons millions, according to one state representative. State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) pushed for a measure last year decriminalizing possession of 15 grams, which the governor amended to 10 grams with a veto. This year, lawmakers took the governor’s changes and passed it through both chambers of the General Assembly. The governor signed the law Friday. Cassidy says the law could save the state’s prison system an estimated $10 million a year. “And that’s only at the state level. That’s not where most of the people are actually being held. Most of the time and impact is at our county jails either pre-trial or with misdemeanor time served and with our law enforcement’s time on the streets,” Cassidy said.
The law makes possession of 10 or fewer grams of marijuana a finable offense of no more than $200. State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) applauded the governor’s signing of the bill, and said this means some young people won’t have a criminal cloud over their future. “You get these records and you can’t get hired, you can’t employment, you can’t get housing,” she said. “The repercussions are ridiculous.” However, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police Director Ed Wojcicki said his organization has issues with modifying the DUI standard from zero tolerance for marijuana to allowing some threshold for drivers. “Society still has to sort out how they’re going to deal with drivers who have small amounts of cannabis in their systems,” he said. Advocates of the law suggest the science of testing impaired drivers continues to evolve and become more fine-tuned.

IC Catholic Prep football team schedule packed with elite opponents Rival Bishop McNamara comes to Elmhurst Aug. 26
By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT
The IC Catholic Prep football team won’t have to wait long to get its rematch. The Knights will kick off the 2016 season at home at Lewis Stadium on Friday, Aug. 26 against defending state-champion Bishop McNamara from Kankakee. This is the same McNamara team that handed the Knights both of their losses last season as book-ends, to kick off the 2015 season (49-32 loss in Kankakee) and to end the season (42-14 loss in the state semifinals in Elmhurst). McNamara (13-1 last season) is one of six playoff teams on IC Catholic Prep’s 2016 schedule. After facing McNamara in Week 1 under the lights, the Knights will head to the Chicago south suburbs to face St. Laurence out of Burbank. St. Laurence advanced to the state semifinals as well last year (10-3 record). That game takes place in Week 2 on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. The Knights then play a pair of Metro Suburban Conference crossover games in Weeks 3 and 4. IC Catholic Prep travels to Elmwood Park on Friday, Sept. 9. Elmwood Park, a member of the MSC Red Division, went 4-5 last year. Fellow Red Division entrant Chicago Christian heads to Elmhurst on Friday, Sept. 16 for a 7:15 p.m. game. Chicago Christian went 1-8 in 2015. The Knights, the defending larger-enrollment division champions of the MSC, kick off MSC Blue Division play on Friday, Sept. 23 in Elgin at 7 p.m., against St. Edward. St. Edward moved to the upper division this season, trading places with Aurora Central Catholic. Also, the conference switched the division names from geography-based West and East to color-based, Red (smaller-enrollment teams) and Blue (larger schools). St. Edward went 6-4 last year and made the state playoffs. Riverside-Brookfield, which advanced to the state quarterfinals a year ago, comes to Elmhurst on Friday, Sept. 30 for a 7:15 p.m. game. The Knights conclude the home portion of their regular-season schedule on Friday, Oct. 7 against Wheaton Academy (7:15 p.m. start). Wheaton Academy went 6-4 last year and made the playoffs. The Knights wrap up the regular season with a pair of road conference games. IC Catholic Prep goes to Glen Ellyn in Week 8 to face Glenbard South (Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:15 p.m.). Glenbard South went 6-5 last year and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. Fenton will host IC Catholic Prep in Week 9 on Friday Oct. 21 at 7:15 p.m. The Bison went 2-7 last year. The nine opponents on IC Catholic Prep’s schedule this year had a combined record of 58-39 in 2015. This is also the first time the Knights will not play a single day game or Saturday game. All nine contests occur on Friday nights under the lights.

Appreciation from columnist to readers and to another columnist
ne of the many joys of writing this weekly newspaper column, and my weekly email newsletter, is the feedback from you. As I have been sifting and sorting as we clean out, pare down, and pack up, I have found so many “love letters” that I have saved over the years. Thank you! Some of the response is via email and this past January I received correspondence from a reader in one of the suburbs that runs my column in their weekly paper. Helen stated that she was 88 years old, had been a widow for 30 years, and been a paraplegic since the age of 21 due to polio in 1949. Already quite an intriguing gal. Then Helen informs me that she too writes and was tickled to read that we had both written on the same subject one week, just in a little different form. She continued: “On the Sunday before my column came out, our pastor’s message was on the word “integrity” and I told him we must have been reading each other’s minds, and then when you basically used the same idea in your column, I was blown away.” My response was of course that great minds think alike.
By
KELLY SIMMONS Columnist
It delights me that a woman who is 88 contacts me via email. Then to learn that she is independent, been in a wheelchair her entire adult life and still submits a regular column to her local paper is inspiring. Helen then sent me via snail mail a copy of the story of her polio. It was written so long ago, she says, that it was done on her antique typewriter. Seeing typed pages warms my heart. Reading the other stuff she sent intrigues me too. An interesting character, this Helen Perrine is. She comments on my marrying a Simmons, and states that she is related to the Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons. “His father and I were first cousins or his grandfather and my mother were siblings.” Helen also confides that she wrote a book, only 20 copies, for her family to outline their life history and get

The scene was a beautiful winter landscape, a horse-drawn sleigh on the snowy path through the woods to the church. It was lovely and then I noticed it was hers. Helen painted it, “in her 88th year.” Again, this lady is a force to behold. She had written to me originally when I wrote about holding on to one word to be the anchor for your upcoming year. That was what her pastor had talked about in his “integrity” message and what she had written about in a way that same time. Helen has seen a piece on TV about a guy who makes jewelry with one word embossed on it that could be the word to define your future. She wondered what Einstein would have selected and if Martin Luther King would have selected DREAM. She wrote to me that her word would be IMAGINATION. I love it. Thank you, Helen, for being a shining example that life is up to us to make it wonderful and full. I believe I will still be writing when I am 88, and hopefully someone will still find me interesting then. For now, I’m signing off to Helen and all readers, with deep appreciation. Cheers!

While Illinois saw some gains in employment last month, its manufacturing sector is still bleeding jobs. The June ADP regional employment report shows Illinois added 7,400 jobs in June, but lost 1,200 manufacturing, mining and construction jobs. In another blow to Illinois’ bluecollar sector, employers announced another 600 planned layoffs under a state law requiring notice of mass firings. Illinois Manufacturers Association Vice President Mark Denzler said Illinois’ manufacturers are leaving for greener pastures. “Illinois is losing manufacturing jobs while our neighbors in Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan continue to grow manufacturing jobs,” he said. Denzler said the jobs that are being eliminated are the lifeblood of Illinois’ middle class, and that the average manufacturing job in Illinois averages $70,000 annually in wages and benefits. Illinoisans need to remember what each lost job represents, he said. “Every one of these jobs lost has an impact to a family,” he said. “Whether it’s the husband or wife, it impacts that family and their kids. It effects whether they can go on vacation or send their kids to college.” Illinois needs to enact reforms to worker’s compensation laws and property tax relief to keep employers and attract new ones, according to Denzler. ADP’s report shows the Midwest region gained 32,000 jobs last month. Illinois’ manufacturing sector didn’t see any net changes in the May report. Illinois’ Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification report lists announced layoffs from all sectors, not just manufacturing. The law requires employers with at least 75 employees to give 60 days notice before laying off as much as one-third or more than 250 members of their workforce.

said it three times – or even more, considering this entire Beetlejuice family turned up in downtown Elmhurst on Saturday, October 24 for Elmhurst City Centre’s annual ‘BooTiful Saturday’ celebration. After a movie at York Theatre, kids of all ages in costume were invited to trick-or-treat at the many participating businesses and shops in downtown. More photos inside this issue.

The latest mass layoff report features more than 950 jobs on the chopping block from nine different Illinois employers. The largest announced layoffs for July come from the National Opinion Research Center, or NORC, in Chicago. The market research firm slated more than 280 layoffs as part of a restructuring, expected to begin in September. NORC spokesman Ron Jurek said the organization is growing, just not in Illinois. “We do data collection that spans multiple time zones and to set us up to provide the coverage that our clients need, we took the hub and spoke model approach,” he said. Jurek said Illinois’ current business climate had nothing to do with the decision to move. NORC announced in July that it was opening a new survey research center in Wichita, Kansas, where it would be recruiting 300 interviewers. Jurek said four staff from Chicago will be

headed to Kansas. Despite the announced remote call center in Kansas and another in New Mexico, Jurek said NORC will keep a presence in Chicago. “The 285 folks are the folks that actually are affected,” he said. “We’ll have about 160 folks remain in Chicago; and of the 285 folks, the vast majority are part-time, intermittent employees.” Among other expected layoffs reported in July are 130 jobs at several western Illinois Jiffi Stop locations because of a change in ownership. Will County automotive parts manufacturer Bergstrom will see 50 layoffs due to a relocation. July’s reported 950 layoffs was more than June’s report of 592 layoffs, but less than May’s report of nearly 1,300 layoffs. State law requires businesses to report mass layoffs. The state then makes resources available for workers to find retraining and placement into other jobs.

Report: More than 950 jobs leaving Illinois
Wounded military veterans have come together to practice yoga at local studio. Yoga has proven to have many benefits for people living with PTSD and physical injuries. On Saturday, Aug. 6, the Wounded Warriors Project hosted a yoga class for veterans injured in the line of duty and their families, as well as first responders who served during, on or after September 11, 2001, and became injured either mentally or physically.
The class was held at Yoga by Degrees at 1042 So. York Road. The veterans are now eligible to receive a complimentary three-month membership at Yoga by Degrees, so they can continue to take classes and receive the benefits of yoga. Yoga membership benefits may still be available to veterans, even if they missed the August 6th class. To find out, contact: seldridge@woundedwarriorproject.org. For more information, visit yogabydegrees.net or woundedwarriorproject. org.
