ment portion of the meeting. Mayor Steve Morley, who led discussion at previous meetings, was out of town on business.

By Dan McLeister For The Elmhurst Independent

ELMHURST — Alderman Jim Kennedy (6th Ward) said The Storm Water Communications Committee is working through issues with School District 205 and the Elmhurst Park District about sites for temporary water storage after a storm. “Hopefully we will make more progress at the next meeting on September 10th and get further down the road,” stated Kennedy, who was leading discussion at the August 27th meeting. At the beginning of the meeting he said no votes would be taken that night. Commenting on various opinions by member of the public about the impact of new construction on flooding, the alderman said “let’s base comments on facts, not speculation.” To about 25 people in the audience and to the over 50 percent City survey respondents saying storm water should be a top priority, Kennedy stated: “We have listened and we have heard you.” Three audience members spoke during the public com-

Emily Bastedo, a member of the School Board for District 205, commented that there were “heated arguments” at a recent School Board meeting.

“The seven of us all have different opinions. I am very frustrated,” said Bastedo, who was attending her first-ever Storm Water Communications Com-

mittee meeting. Other D-205 Board members attended previous Committee meetings.

City Manager Jim Grabowski noted that the City’s lawyers and School Board attorneys have gone back and forth with various drafts of an Intergovernmental Agreement about storm water retention. In one verbal exchange Kennedy asked Bastedo, who is a lawyer, to give an exam-

ple of what the School Board meant by the educational purpose provision where District 205 might need water retention land for another purpose in the future. “I don’t know. I don’t have a crystal ball,” she replied. “Limiting the power of the School Board is a big sticking point.” “We do not want to spend

a bunch of money and get kicked off the land,” Kennedy commented. “The lawyers should figure it out.” For Elmhurst Park District sites being considered by the City, Jim Rogers, executive director of the Park District, said each of the proposed five sites would be a separate item in an Intergovernmental Agreement. The five proposed

sites are York Commons, Golden Meadows, East End, Crestview and Seminole. Vince Spaeth, a member of the Elmhurst Park Board, stated that it should take it a piece at a time, not all five together. Grabowski commented that the City “needs to clarify a lot” about termination clauses.

She stated that the School Board was near a final document about storm water retention on the Madison School site. “It has taken the School Board a long time to get comfortable with a document about the Madison site,” she said. “We are really close.” More work needs to be done on a proposal for Sandburg

VIEWPOINT Opinions far removed from reality receive no credence, reader says In the August 27 issue of The Elmhurst Independent Editor Dee Longfellow wrote a “Viewpoint” piece defending Leslie Leader. Ms. Leader had previously written a piece in which she called Elmhurst residents concerned about flooding “complainers.” Ms. Longfellow noted that many people wrote to the paper taking issue with Ms. Leader’s assessment of the flooding issue and her labeling of those who are speaking up about it. Ms. Longfellow’s defense of Ms. Leader rested on Ms. Leader being a “columnist” and not a “news reporter.” Since her article appeared in the “Viewpoint” section it was Ms. Leader’s opinion, not news. Ms. Leader, thanks to the First Amendment, is free to express her opinion, which she did. Ms. Leader’s written opinions “do not contain factual news per se, just her thoughts on various topics.” As such, according to Ms. Longfellow, readers should not attack Ms. Leader for exercising her free speech rights. And so I won’t. But, as Ms. Longfellow had to admit, Ms. Leader’s piece began with a recounting of a city meeting about flooding at which she said only 18 residents attended. Ms. Leader then did some hypothetical math and con-

cluded that only a tiny fraction of those who have suffered flooding actually bothered to attend a city meeting about the problem. Folks, she summed up, were just complainers. But Ms. Leader got the facts wrong. There were far more people at the meeting. So, in fact, Ms. Leader’s opinion began with a bad job of journalism -- she incorrectly reported on an event that occurred in the city. Since her husband is an alderman, I can’t imagine how this could have happened. But it did. For a moment, Ms. Leader actually was a news reporter -- and a bad one. And, as often is the case, opinions based on flawed facts can themselves be flawed. While I recognize peoples’ right to assert that the world is flat, their opinions are so far removed from reality that I give them no credence. Perhaps Ms. Leader needs to look a little further to see that not only is the world round, but also that many people in this town, myself included, are extremely concerned about flooding and that our concerns are very real. If she fails to do that, I see no reason why anyone would read her column. I certainly would not. Jon Baker

My Mom the Wonder Woman By Vi Larson

I

t was back in the Great Depression era that my mom set out to show men, like Annie Oakley did, that women could do anything they set their minds to do. And they could often do them as well or better than the men. In most things, mom was a very “proper” lady who minded all the lady-like “rules” and got on well with my dad. It took a lot to get her “dander” up. But once in awhile it did happen, and here’s one of those instances that I remember so well.

VIOLET LARSON

It was one of those super hot Saturday’s in the summer time. My Dad and the other men in

the house (my mother’s Dad and her brother were both living with us at the time) were very busy working in the yard and cleaning up around the outside of the house. My Mother needed to go to the store for groceries, but the men were too busy to drive us there or even to babysit my two brothers and me. So Mom took the three of us on the bus to 22nd street in Berwyn where all the “good stores” were and she picked up all the groceries it took to feed a large family. Needless to say she was extremely tired and exhausted.

We arrived home to find all three men sound asleep in various parts of the house, and there in the driveway was my Dad’s new four-door red Ford. My mother did not know how to drive but she was so mad at the whole situation it didn’t stop her from grabbing the keys and telling us kids to stay on the front porch and behave. Well, she started the car and figured out how to shift gears, as she had been watching how the men did it. She backed out, shifted into first and off she went around the block. My oldest brother went in and woke the

men and they were hysterical. They were out waving her down and she kept going around and around until she was sure she could do it well. From that time on my mom was the best driver, and she didn’t have to drag three kids and a ton of groceries on busses ever again. Never underestimate the power of a woman!!!

VP Village President to run for U.S House of Representatives Bullwinkel seeks Dem nomination in 8th District now held by Duckworth By Paul DelGuidice For The Villa Park Independent

VILLA PARK — Last week, Villa Park Village President Deborah Bullwinkel announced her intention to seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. House of Representatives in Illinois’ 8th District. Current holding the seat is Tammy Duckworth, who chose not to run for a third term in the House, opting instead to run against incumbent U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Illinois) in the upcoming November 2016 election. Bullwinkel, 47, a communications consultant, was first elected to the Villa Park Board of Trustees in 2009. In 2013, she successfully ran for Village President. The announcement of her intentions to seek the Congressional seat in the 8th District came on Tuesday, August 25, just one day before the 95th anniversary of ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women full voting rights in the United States. In her announcement, she stressed her gender and called out the Republicancontrolled House of Representatives by releasing the following statement: “Every day, politicians in Congress zealously attack middle-class families and women.

Whether it is fair wages and pay equity, economic opportunity for the middle class, paid family leave, or access to good health care and reproductive rights, extremist Republicans in Congress will fight any positive change. If you’re a working person, and especially if you’re a woman, the assault never stops. I won’t back down from that fight.” Democratic challengers

For the seat include Hoffman Estates lawyer/small business owner Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Michael Noland of Elgin, who is currently serving the 22nd District as a State Senator. State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-23rd), also of Villa Park and Bullwinkel’s predecessor as Villa Park Village President, briefly campaigned for the 8th District seat but stepped out of the race in July of this year.

Asked why she thought she was the best choice to represent the 8th District, Bullwinkel was quick to point out her years of public service. “I have several years as a public servant at the local level,” she said. “I’m in the trenches with residents every day. Many local issues translate to the national level: economic development, employment, health care.” In addition, Bullwinkel point-

ed out her experience as a communications consultant and her work with senior citizens, veterans and people with disabilities. She feels it “gives her a unique perspective on issues affecting her constituency.” “I’m a natural born advocate,” she said. “I help people solve problems.” Bullwinkel also related that

PARK BOARD NEWS Here’s what’s going on at the Elmhurst Park District… • The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on Aug. 26 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street. Commissioner Anthony Pelosi was absent

from the meeting. • Discussion of IGA continues Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers provided an update of the district’s ongoing negotiations with the City of Elmhurst regarding the plans to construct storm water detention basins on park property, including York Commons and

Golden Meadows. Attorneys representing the district are negotiating with city attorneys to create an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) to allow the city to build the basins. Rogers noted that the city had recently sent the park district a draft of an IGA. He said the district responded to the city’s draft on Aug. 25. Rogers said the two sides are working on a master IGA

• IDNR expectations discussed as well Rogers also talked about a recent meeting with representatives of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) regarding the city’s plans to construct a basin at Golden Meadows Park. The park district acquired that site with Land and Water Conservation funds. The property, therefore, must be replaced with property in equal size, value and recreational usefulness. The park district and the city want to know if the IDNR would sign off on an agreement that would allow the construction of the basin to begin before a replacement property is acquired. The district and city also want to know if the IDNR would allow a dual use site at Golden Meadows, which would allow the site to serve as a detention basin and a recreational area, which could eliminate the need to acquire another site. Rogers said that the IDNR is willing to consider any proposals put before them. East End Park, Wild Meadows Trace and Crestview Park were also acquired with IDNR open space land acquisition grants. The IDNR, therefore, would be involved in any agreement between the city and park district to construct basins at that site. Rogers said the IDNR would consider proposals at each site on a case-by-case basis.

that will include legal terms applying to the construction of storm basins on all park sites. He also said the agreement between the two sides will include an addendum specific to the characteristics of each park property. In addition to York Commons and Golden Meadows, the city has proposed the construction of storm water detention basins at East End Park, Wild Meadows Trace and Crestview Park.

• Board considers new indoor sports facility The Aug. 26 park district board meeting also included discussion about the possibility of constructing a new indoor sports facility in Elmhurst. Earlier this year, the board provided consensus for park district staff to start the process of conducting a feasibility study. City of Elmhurst staff and development, planning and zoning committee are also considering a study regarding the construction of

an indoor sports facility. The park board discussed the possibility of sharing the cost of a feasibility study. Park district staff estimates that such a study could cost between $25,000 and $40,000. Park district staff furnished the board with recent studies conducted for park districts in Naperville and Woodridge. In researching the potential of a study, Elmhurst Park District staff is considering three firms. One of those firms conducted the study for the Naperville Park District, while another put together the study for the Woodridge Park District, which is in the process of building an indoor facility. “The way that I view this process, strictly from the Elmhurst Park District’s perspective, is I believe now is the time to investigate this indoor sports concept,” stated Rogers. “There’s more of a buzz now about it than I have ever seen in my 20-plus years at the district.” Rogers also said that he did not think it would be a good idea for the park district to assume it could generate enough income from such a facility to operate it and pay off the debt from its construction. He said at a previous meeting that the cost of building an indoor facility could be approximately $20 million. The facility being built in Woodridge reportedly has an estimated cost of $18.7 million.

• Pomerance trust grants Park District $110,000+ Near the end of the meeting, Rogers informed the board that the district had just received a distribution from the trust of Eugene Pomerance, who served three terms on the Elmhurst Park District Board. Pomerance, who died in September 2014, served on the board from 1959-1965, 1967-1973 and from 19891995. Rogers said that Pomerance’s trust sent the district a distribution for $110,285. Additionally, the trust sent a distribution for $15,700 to People for Elmhurst Parks Foundation (PEP). Rogers noted that Pomerance was instrumental in the establishment of PEP and the Illinois Prairie Path. Pomerance was an Illinois Prairie Path Board member for 46 years, from 1968 until 2014. The park district board will hold its next meeting on Sept. 9.

And You Are…Christena Gunther

isiting a museum, theater or other cultural institution can be a challenge for people with disabilities. A movement to make culture accessible to everyone has taken root nationwide and an Elmhurst Historical Museum employee has been recognized for her contributions to the cause. Christena Gunther joined the Elmhurst Historical Museum two years ago as the Community Programs Coordinator, which involves planning public programs such as architecture walks and gallery talks for people of all ages. She also supports the process of making the museum’s exhibits accessible. “I weigh in from the perspective of accessibility in strategic planning and exhibit planning,” she said. “We are fortunate that the Glos Mansion (home of the Elmhurst Historical Museum) previously served as City Hall so some upgrades had already been made, like making the front door accessible. But it’s not just about physical access, it’s also thinking about our visitors who are blind or deaf and how they can be part of the story too.” Christena has a brother who is an artist and has Down syndrome. While studying arts administration at New York University, she wrote her graduate school thesis on programming in museums for adults with disabilities. She went on to work in accessibility at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. During her seven years in New York, Christena became involved with an organization that provided networking opportunities and resources for people working in cultural accessibility. When she moved to Chicago she searched for a similar group and found that it didn’t yet exist. “I did informational interviews with people in Chicago and we saw a need for a group to share ideas about accessibility between cultural institutions,” she said. “So about two and a half years ago, I founded a group that we call Chicago Cultural Accessibility Consortium (CCAC). I have co-chairs and a steering committee made up of people from cultural institutions and people with disabilities. We host monthly

professional development speakers and serve as a network.” While she worked in New York, Christena also began attending an annual conference called LEAD, Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability. Hosted by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the conference brings together arts administrators from across the country to focus on improving the accessibility of cultural institutions. “The Kennedy Center is the gold standard when it comes to cultural accessibility and they’ve done wonderful things for many decades,” Christena said. “They started the LEAD conference about 15 years ago and have continued to expand it. It’s a great conference and really brings together my interests in museums, art, and adults with disabilities.”

The conference concludes with an awards dinner, which includes the presentation of an Emerging Leader award to someone who has been attending the conference and is an advocate for accessibility within their organization and community. This year, Christena and her CCAC co-chairs were honored to receive the Emerging Leader award. The award read, “The CCAC is an excellent example of what leadership in the field of disability and cultural arts can do.” Patrice Roche of the Elmhurst Historical Museum, who originally brought the accomplishments of Christena to the attention of the Elmhurst Independent, said the following about her: “Christena is working with other institutional leaders to continue to improve access to every cultural arts institution. As you might imagine, we’re very proud of Christena and glad she is a member of our staff!”

Presenting the award for ‘Good Works’

Board Chairman Dee Longfellow reads the plaque to Pete DiCianni, who was given the A. J. “Toche” Terrones Good Works Award, an annual award presented to someone who has contributed a great deal to the Chamber Golf Outing. The award is named for former Chamber executive Toche, who passed away the night before the golf outing several years ago. It has been presented annually ever since.

GroundLink drives for major growth in Chicago market New Chief of Sales calls Elmhurst home, soon company will too By Dee Longfellow For The Elmhurst Independent

ELMHURST — GroundLink is a global car service that leverages a proprietary technology platform to provide seamless, reliable and consistent ground transportation for travelers worldwide in most major cities and 110 countries. Sound like a lot of buzzwords you’d find in a corporate mission statement? Well, perhaps so but to put it very simply – be prepared to have an entirely new experience when you need ground transportation, a ride to the airport or the service of a limousine. And you’ll do it through an app on your phone. Offering transportation through an app is a relatively new concept, but it is growing every day. While a few other companies have started similar ventures, the field is very new and GroundLink feels poised for a great deal of

MICHAEL MOORADIAN

growth here in the Chicago market, which will be headquartered right here in Elmhurst, where the company’s new Chief Sales Officer Michael Mooradian lives. The Independent had a chance to sit down with Mooradian, to learn more about what GroundLink does, the market for the service and how Elmhurst might benefit (hint: JOBS!).

After a career in sales management with global organizations in the technology and travel industries, including vice president of worldwide sales for Chicago-based Orbitz for Business, Mooradian was tabbed by GroundLink to take over the grand expansion they anticipate here in Chicago. Ever since coming to this market, the company has grown each year, Mooradian said, making Chicago the company’s 4th largest market in the U.S., behind New York, L.A. and San Francisco. (It should also be noted that GroundLink operates in 110 countries throughout the world; London is its largest market in Europe.) “We have experienced 25% yearover-year growth in Chicago in number of rides,” he said. “Everything is automated, everything is mobile driven.” How it works If you’ve used a limo service to be picked up at the airport, you know some of the frustrations. All you are given is the license plate number of a limo or car, so you stand out on one of those islands with the shelters and watch hopefully as car after car after car drives by. One

person recalled doing it in the rain and snow, so you’re not only fighting the wind and weather, but also watching your luggage, as you strain to see the license plates on the cars approaching. When it seems like forever, especially in bad weather, you start to think, “did I miss it?” With GroundLink, the mobile app contains everything. You text the company when you have retrieved your luggage and, after dispatching a vehicle, you receive on the app the name and a photo of the driver, a photo of the vehicle, the make, model, etc. You even receive their appropriate mapping via GPS, so there’s no worry that a shady driver might take you out of your way in an unfamiliar city, just to run up the fare. “In 2003, the company started in New York,” Mooradian said. “It was the first to build and develop the technology to book over the web. We experienced real growth in 2007, so we took our web technology and applied it to a smartphone app. We own all the technology

SPRINGFIELD — A 2012 study found that Illinois suspends more African-American students than any other state in the U.S., including a Black-White suspension disparity that is the highest in the country. To address this alltoo-apparent problem and the overall frequency of out-ofschool discipline, a new law will help to ensure that all students are in school and off the streets as much as possible. The new law will address the

frequency and racial disparity of suspensions and expulsions in several ways, including the following:

ity of cities, where the focus is selling to corporations, to become their provider of black car services.” The company takes more steps than other companies in checking a drivers’ background, making sure insurance is adequate and up-todate. “We expect our drivers to have $1 million general liability insurance on their own, but also we have a $6 million umbrella insurance policy on top of that,” he said. Other companies often don’t complete background checks on their drivers. The advantages… GroundLink seems to have anticipated all the pitfalls of the industry and is working to solve things before they become problems. The edge they believe to have over their competitors is multifold: GroundLink owns the technology to operate the smart app. The platform is used to book rides, dispatch vehicles, bill accounts, send receipts, even collect customer feedback on the spot.

GroundLink offers a more thorough way of vetting drivers for safety and for insurance coverage. GroundLink is committed to giving its customers the best possible experience. Its technology can even advise if flights are late. GroundLink is the only limo service that offers an on-time guarantee – yes, you read that right. “We are the only black car service provider that offers an on-time guarantee,” Mooridian said. “If a driver is more than five minutes late, we give a refund of up to $75 toward a future trip.” If you have a concern that requires immediate attention, GroundLink also has a hot line. “If you really need to talk to someone, you can call 24/7 and get a real person!” Mooridian said. It’s the wave of the future, he assures. “It’s a matter of convenience. The ‘millennials’ all want to use their phones, so it only makes sense to follow what is most appealing to them.”

His new Labor Day tradition is letting someone else do the work! He’s smart enough to enjoy this new phase of his life — and to be prepared for whatever the future brings.

That’s how the other companies save a great deal of money. But GroundLink takes it a step further. “The company provides a technology enabler which also provides traditional black-car services – to and from the airports, downtown to a concert, to corporate meetings – the big difference is that we’re scheduled in advance,” he said. “In some markets, we have ‘ondemand’ services, but not yet in Chicago.” The company is primarily focused on business-to-business or B2B clients – catering to corporation most of all. “We have sales people in Washington, Dallas, New York, and other markets,” he said. “Our sales reps are scattered through a good major-

New dog walking, pet-sitting service business opens ELMHURST — Area pet owners now have a new professional dog-walking and pet care business in Elmhurst neighborhood, scheduled to open on Saturday, September 5, 2015. The company is called “Honey’s Dog Walking, etc.” What makes the business different is that the owner Kris Dotson only walks two dogs at a time – be they from the same family or not. Dotson is a certified professional in Canine/Pet CPR First Aid, is insured and is an experienced dog-walker, cat caregiver and more. She also offers in-home wellness checks for pets, she will water plants and bring in the mail and newspapers. “This is where the ‘etc.’ in my business name comes in,” Dotson said. “It is my goal is to make it much easier for Elmhurst resident pet owners to travel and/or work by using my services.” Honey’s Dog Walking, etc. is a member of PUPS, an Educational organization for professional pet sitters/dog walkers. Dotson is also a member of the National Association of Professional Women and is constantly pursuing ongoing/continuing education. Dotson needs at least three days’ notice before a client plans to travel so she can visit the home, become familiar with the pets, review needed services and confirm the assignment. For more information, including rates, or to reserve a dog walker or pet sitter, please call 630-841-5098 or send an e-mail to: hdogwetc@yahoo.com.

York boys soccer team ready to roll under new coach Majewski Dukes roster mixed with experience and youthful promise By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — It’s a new era for the York boys soccer team. The Dukes are now under the direction of first-year coach Lukasz Majewski. He takes over for longtime coach Markus Roy. Majewski previously coached in the Fenton boys program and with several area youth teams. Majewski played at Leyden

High School and noted he was part of the program’s first and only unbeaten West Suburban Conference Gold Division championship team. He went on to play soccer at Triton College and Aurora University. “I’m very familiar with the teams in the area here,” said Majewski, who teaches in Plainfield and lives in the western suburbs. “I’m aware of the conference and the teams on both sides of Silver and Gold divisions. This job sounded very intriguing to me. I wanted to get back into coaching and this opportunity came back. It

York girls golf team hits 100 all-time win plateau Special milestone for coach Tilden achieved against Hinsdale South By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — Barb Tilden started the York girls golf program in 1999. Some 16 years later Tilden was given a nice reward in terms of how far the program has come. York’s recent West Suburban Conference victory over Hinsdale South at Sugar Creek was the program’s 100th all-time dual-meet win. “The program has come a long way,” said Tilden. “We’ve had a lot of special players come through the program. This particular senior class we have is a phenomenal group of girls. They are very enthusiastic. It’s a very nice group that always tries its best. These seniors are pretty special.” York celebrated the milestone with a balloon presentation.

York’s Duke mascot also was in attendance. In the win, York (which beat Hinsdale South 165-200) was led by medalist Christine Millins, who shot 40. Megan Backman and Jenny Diamond each shot 41, while Lauren Cairo shot 43. York won the junior-varsity contest 197-262. Maggie Milkowski was the medalist with a 47. Mia Spedale added a 49, while Katie Wegmann shot 50 and Annie Grasse had a 51. The Dukes opened the season by hosting Maine South and Willowbrook at Sugar Creek. York shot 165, while Maine South was second and Willowbrook third. Backman and Katie Beth Pasternock shared medalist honors with 39s. Cairo shot 43, while Ellen Foley and Tarryn Becker each shot 44. York won the JV meet at Twin Lakes with a 162. Wegmann was the medalist with a 38. Jenna Koeppen shot 40. Spedale shot 42, while Milkowski also logged a 42.

The Dukes also dropped a 160-178 WSC decision to Downers Grove North at the Downers Grove Park District course. Pasternock had a 42 for the Dukes. Foley and Backman each shot 45s, while Millins had a 46. York won the JV match against Downers North 215227. Milkowski and Wilms tied for medalist honors with 53s. Grasse shot 54 and Wegmann shot 55. Backman, Foley, Cairo and Pasternock are senior returners for the Dukes, while Millins and Becker are juniors. “We’ve seen a lot of improvement since last year from the girls who are back,” said Tilden. Tilden said York again conducted its 500 Club promotion where players are encouraged to get in 500 holes of play or practice-time equivalent in the offseason (15 minutes of practice equals 1 hole). Four players reached the 500 plateau. Tilden has been pleased with what she has seen on the course

thus far. “I am pleased, but the girls get down on themselves sometimes,” she said. “I tell them it is still early in the season. We don’t want them peaking this early in the season. We want them to be playing their best golf come conference tournament and regional time, not now. It’s OK to have some blips

as long as they keep trying hard and improving.” York also competed in the Joliet invitational at Inwood. The Dukes took fifth out of 15 teams. Foley and Millins tied for 16th place individually, while Becker came in 20th place. Those three players earned Top 20 medals.

was something I was extremely interested in.” He takes over a York team comprised of eight seniors. “The majority of the team is upperclassmen and we have five sophomores and one freshman,” he said. “We have guys who are very eager to get in the lineup and produce. My philosophy is the best 11 players play. That creates competition.” Senior goalie Nick Sasanelli will be a key contributor for the Dukes. “We have some strong leaders with experience on defense,” said Majewski. “But for the most part we’re a young team.” Majewski also is looking for big things from seniors Aiden Richards (defense) and Seamus Ward (defense). “These guys have the experience at the varsity level,” the coach said. “We are going to count on their leadership.” Majewski said younger play-

ers such as sophomores Joe Reinhofer (midfield), Robert Meade (midfield) and freshman Edgar Roman (defense) also will help. “We don’t have a lot of experience and we’re playing in a new system,” said Majewski. “Right now we’re a work in progress. As long as they buy in to what we are teaching and make the necessary adjustments during and after games we will be OK. This is all new to the returning players and obviously the new players. We have to figure out how to finish. It’s an absolutely fantastic group of kids to work with and it’s a good mix of kids. It’s not all seniors. We’ve had zero issues with the older guys and the younger ones. The older guys are showing them the ropes. We are becoming a team, which is nice to see.” Sasanelli, Ward and Richards are the team captains.

York boys golf team shoots 1-over-par as team in win Morris’ 35 keys IC Catholic Prep in victory By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The York boys golf team had itself a fine showing at Village Greens in Woodridge recently. The Dukes shot 1-over-par as a team en route to a 145149 West Suburban Conference crossover win against Downers Grove South. “Both teams played well and it was a nice win,” said York coach Jim Borel. Tom Manning led the Dukes with a 2-under 34. Will Gunst added a 1-under 35,while Mark Leali and Mitchell Russell each shot 38. York also notched a 151-162 non-conference win over Maine South at Carriage Greens Country Club in Darien. “It was a nice win against a good Maine South team,” said Borel. Gunst shot even-par 35 in the win. Jordan Less added a 38, while Manning and Russell each shot 39. “We are starting to play well and the kids know we can get better, which is exciting,” said Borel. Earlier, York finished third

out of 28 teams at the downstate Limestone invitational. York shot a 302 in the tournament. Less led the Dukes with a 72 for 18 holes. Manning shot 74, while Leali shot 77. Gunst finished with a 79. After the Downers South win, York was averaging 150.7 strokes per nine holes. Gunst, Less and Manning all were averaging 37.5 for nine holes, while Leali was at 39.2 and Russell at 39.7. IC Catholic Prep golf The IC Catholic Prep golf team recorded a recent 157189 non-conference win over Northridge Prep at Fresh Meadows. Trey Morris led the Knights. He was the meet medalist with a 35. Connon Leahy added a 39. Charlie Schoonveld shot 41. Maddie Hurt and John Hoffman each shot 42s. Timothy Christian golf The Timothy Christian boys golf team went 2-1 during a recent three-match stretch. The Trojans recorded a 193-206 victory over Riverside-Brookfield and also scored a 173-275 win over St. Joseph. Jimmy Brush was the medalist in the win against St. Joe’s. Timothy also dropped a 155198 match to Wheaton Academy.

were 6-4, 6-3 winners at No. 3 doubles and Riek and Toohey were 6-4, 6-2 winners at No. 4 doubles. York closed out the tournament with a 6-0 win over Hersey. Shaw was a 6-3 ,1-6, (10-8) winner at No. 1 singles. Claire Meyer was a 4-6, 6-3, (10-6) winner at No. 2 singles. Brigman and Hennessy were 7-6(4), 7-5 winners at No. 1 doubles. Riddle and Liz Mazzocco were 6-2, 6-2 winners at No. 2 doubles. Tara Meyer and Aloia were 1-6, 6-3, (10-6) winners at No. 3 doubles, while Fonorow and Brunke were 6-0, 6-0 winners at No. 4 doubles. York is coming off a 2014 season where it went 16-10, won a sectional team title and took 26th in the state as a team. The Dukes graduated six seniors from last year’s team who qualified for state, including four-time state player Angela Avgerinos, who is playing at Butler. Key returners for the Dukes include Shaw, Paist and Hennessy. Paist was an all-conference player in 2014, while Shaw and Hennessy each hit the 20-win barrier last season. Key newcomers include seniors Brigman, Claire Meyer, Tara Meyer, Cushing, Lubertozzi, Toohey and Aloia, juniors Riddle and Liz Mazzocco, soph-

omores Fonorow and Paist and freshmen Brunke and Riek. “We are very excited to work with 13 new varsity players this season,” said Heimann. “Many of these girls have been varsity-ready for at least one year, but last year’s strong senior class did not provide opportunities with the varsity. Most of these players competed on the JV 1 team in 2014 that finished 16-1 with their only loss to Hinsdale Central.” Heimann noted last year’s JV 1 team, coached by Kara Dollaske, finished in second place in the conference beating all teams except Hinsdale Central in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division. The team also had non-conference wins against the likes of Lake Forest, Glenbrook South and Maine South. “We will have a very deep team up and down the lineup card,” said Heimann. “Seventeen freshmen came out in the program this fall, which we are very excited about. There will be great competition throughout the area and we will play a very competitive schedule. We are still looking at who will fill each of the singles spots and who will make up the doubles combinations as it is in the early going. It should be a very exciting season.”

Timothy Christian girls volleyball team still imposing By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The Timothy Christian girls volleyball team graduated a lot of talent from last year’s team that went 36-3, shared the Metro Suburban Conference East Division title and advanced to a Class 3A sectional final. But the cupboard is far from bare for coach Scott Piersma. Back for the Trojans are senior setter Dani Van Laten, junior middle Ava Venema and junior outside hitter Kendra Teune. Timothy graduated eight seniors from last year’s squad. “Dani has really taken over that setter’s role after doing it last year,” said Piersma. “Ava and Kendra both will help us. They played up as sophomores.” Junior Zoe Stanton takes over at libero, while sophomores Olivia Hoekstra and Abby Groters will help as well. Hoekstra is an outside hitter, while Groters played usually played one rotation last year, but will increase her responsibilities this year as a defensive specialist. Also on the varsity are Alison DeBoer, Grace Mill-

er, Hope Zastrow, Heather Kocol, Nikki Kwasigroch, Emily Schmidt and Rachel Stoll. “The girls know we’re different than last year’s team,” said Piersma. “We’re not looking to slow down. They know we can put up good numbers as long as we keep working hard and fill the holes that are left from last year. They are doing a great job. I’m very happy with where we are at.” Timothy will present an imposing front line at the net. “We still will be one of the tallest teams when we walk in the gym,” said Piersma. “Ava is 6-2, Kendra is 6-1 and Dani is 5-10 and we have a sophomore Tracy Westra who is 5-10 or 5-11. We’re still very imposing at the net, which is good for us.” Van Laten’s presence will be another key piece to the puzzle. “It’s always good to not have to start with setting,” said Piersma. “We had Jenna Lodewyk for so long and then at the end of her sophomore year Dani had to play in the state tournament. Dani’s our floor leader and the girls look to her. They know she knows how I want things to run. This

is my third year with her. It’s great to have a floor captain like that for another year.” Piersma stressed defense will be a difference-maker for his squad. “Defense will have to be the key thing for us,” he said. “It’s serve-receive and ball control. That’s where we can kind of get in funks. When we are on with that, we are tough to stop. The girls are working on the consistency. The girls are coming along as a whole. With only six girls returning it’s like trying to mesh two teams together. We have six back from the varsity and then eight from the JV. Time together on the court has been very important. They have been working on getting comfortable with each other.” Piersma sees his team in the picture in the MSC East with Chicago Christian and Illiana Christian. “It’s the usual teams,” he said. “Chicago Christian probably lost as much as we did. Illiana lost a little as well. It will be a good mix. We’re shooting for winning or sharing the conference title for a fifth year in a row. That would be real nice to accomplish.”

IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team plays first-ever game Meurer scores first goal in program history By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The brandnew IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team made a favorable impression in its first-ever game. The Knights dropped a close 2-1 decision to Aurora Central Catholic that officially kicked off the nascent program. ACC led 2-0 at halftime. “I told them we would win the second half and we did,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Javier Andrade. “We dominated the second half and had some good runs.” Andrade said Will Lyles and Hector Ramirez specifically were in on those good runs creating quality opportuni-

ties to score. The coach added midfielders Francisco Monteon, Alex Meurer, Jack Hill and Zen Tverdokhlib controlled half the field, preventing ACC players from moving forward. The coach also had high praise for defenders Josh and Jon Simmons, Kristopher Askew and Joshua De La Cruz, as well as goalie Ben Johnson. “Ben had a great night and so did our strong and fast defenders,” said Andrade. Meurer scored the first goal in program history on a penalty kick. “I am very proud of the team since it was their first game ever as a team,” said Andrade. “After a week-and-a-half working with the players they have shown me tremendous improvement.” Andrade added the team also was aided by Joseph Sloan,

Ryan Assmusen, Marc Natividad, Jorge Garcia, Juan Navarro, Joseph Pecoraro and Brian Ruiz. IC Catholic Prep also dropped a 3-0 game to Montini. “Even though we lost, the players did well,” said Andrade. The Knights trailed 1-0 at halftime. “Montini has a good team. They moved the ball around and they had a nice second goal,” said Andrade. “This was only our second varsity game and I like what I see. These players are developing and the two teams we played have had programs for several years.” Johnson again stood out in goal for the Knights. “Ben had another excellent game,” said Andrade. Andrade was especially impressed with how the team responded in the second half

against Aurora Central. “A lot of people thought we would lose by a lot,” he said. “I told them at halftime they could do this. All we had to do was pressure the other team. We had to pin them down. I told them ‘show me’ and they went out there and won the half, 1-0. We were on their side 85 percent of the time in the second half. We kept pushing and pushing. Someone said we’d get beat 8-0 or 10-0 in the first game. After seeing what I saw from our team, it’s a win for me. It was the first time we ever played a game as a group. These other teams are established and have been together. I want to develop these players.” Andrade said ball control has already taken a step forward. “They have learned how to touch the ball better,” he said. “We let the ball run. We don’t

let the players run. We want to dribble. I’m from South America and that’s the way we touch the ball. It’s give-andgo, give-and-go and deliver. What’s most impressed me so far is these kids are playing with heart and integrity. I told them don’t play for me, play for yourselves, your pride. I told them their parents came all the way to Aurora to see them play, now show me what you’ve learned.” Andrade is looking forward to seeing even more progress. “I am going to build this program,” he said. “Like I’ve said, I’m planting the seed. When we plant the seed it will grow. I don’t care how much we are winning or losing by. If we win by 10 or lose by 10, it doesn’t matter. I want to see these kids improve and I want to see them play with fight and never give up.”

“Jordan is a special player. He’s healthy and he’s gained some weight,” said Krefft. “He’s doing a nice job. On the offensive side we’re hoping to run the ball a little better this year.” Lamborn, senior Pat Guinan, Rodriguez and Kenneally are the team captains. On defense, IC Catholic Prep welcomes back Silva at middle linebacker, plus its entire secondary of senior Frank Soto (cornerback), junior Matt Sutton (safety), Guinan (cornerback) and Rowell (safety). Kenneally is back at defensive end and Rodriguez is back at a linebacker spot. Krefft said junior James Lytton and junior Matt Jordan will help at linebacker. “With our defense it’s the same as it has been. We keep it simple and we’re aggressive,” said Krefft. “It’s nice having our entire secondary back and some linebackers back. The experience factor is big. Most of these kids had the opportunity to play quality competition last year. They shouldn’t be seeing anything new out there.” Krefft said another encouraging point is the fact the Knights were competitive in the vast majority of their games last year. “If you look at it, we were 4-5,” he said. “That doesn’t tell the story. We had three games where we missed by a touchdown or less. We had a lot of juniors last year. That leads us to take a positive outlook. We have great seniors now. We have 14 seniors, which is a good class for us, and they

all are great kids, who are IC Catholic Prep men and do a great job competing. They haven’t stopped working since last year. I have a lot of optimism. The IC Catholic Prep tradition is a proud one and we want to get back to the playoffs. Hopefully we are a touchdown better than we were each game last year.” Krefft said Glenbard South and Riverside-Brookfield will be two teams to keep an eye on in the Metro Suburban Conference West Division. “Glenbard South, of course, and R-B. Those are kind of the two teams you look at as being toward the top of the conference,” he said. “We are going to fight and claw. We’re going to have to work for it. There is a lot of talent in the conference. It could go either way. It will be a situation where every game you have to go out there and compete.” On the coaching front, former NFL player Matt Bowen (who lends his football expertise to several Chicago media outlets throughout the year) has joined Krefft’s staff as secondary coach. “Matt’s friends with Mike Calcagno on our staff,” said Krefft. “He came out one day to practice. You want to talk about a great coach. He works with everybody in the program. He teaches the kids. He’s awesome and he enjoys what he is doing and he enjoys the details of the game. He’s done a nice job helping with game planning and practice planning. We’re on the same page philosophically. The knowledge and

experience he possesses is off the charts. The kids love him. He’s a special guy. It takes a different kind of person to coach and relate to young kids. He’s outstanding. It’s next-level stuff with him.” Krefft again praised the efforts of his entire coaching staff. “It’s all about putting kids in positions to be successful as a program,” he said. “The last four years, the staff we’ve had here has been outstanding whether it’s Roger Kelley on

defense or Tony on the offensive side. They’ve all done a great job.” And now Krefft and the Knights are ready to tackle the season head-on. “It goes back to the senior class here,” he said. “It’s a good group off guys. We’re not the biggest team out there, but we have great leaders. We are going to fight and claw and compete against a very challenging schedule. We’re ready for it.”

2015 Knights football team has some experience Looking to take next step By Mike Miazga Correspondent

ELMHURST — The IC Catholic Prep football team has some familiar faces in key places. The Knights return a number of key contributors from a 2014 team that went 4-5 overall. Back on offense for IC Catholic Prep are sophomore quarterback Luke Ricobene, junior running back Jordan Rowell and senior wide receivers Jose Rodriguez and Pat Jordan. Junior Jim Kenneally (tackle) and senior Jeremy Annicella (center) are back on the offensive line. “The players coming back from last year have definitely stepped up,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Bill Krefft. The Knights also will benefit from the contributions of senior linemen Anthony Silva and Jesus Unzueta Jr., along with senior tackle Jack Lamborn. “On offense we are much further along than we were last year,” said Krefft. “Last year was the first year in the new system with coaches Tony Navigato, Mark Schultz and Kevin Cooney. We have a lot more knowledge with it this season. Luke is a sophomore this year and he has some experience now in the system. He played seven varsity games last year.” The Knights also will benefit from the talented Rowell in the backfield.

Paying off a debt

Dee Longfellow, currently Chairman of the Board for the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, gave a short presentation to Bill Gooch of Community Bank of Elmhurst. Jokingly assuring the crowd Gooch was no tightwad, she told everyone how he had given her $20 at last year’s outing to buy raffle tickets. Now, a year later, she is paying him back with interest. “The Wall Street Journal’s prime rate last year and today is 3.25%,” she told Gooch. “So, $20 at 3.25% interest compounded daily over a period of a year means you get an extra dollar. And my father who was a banker for 35 years would be impressed I did that much math!”

Back-to-School tips to keep kids healthy and safe (StatePoint) — Back-to-school prep means more than a trip to the office supply store. Help kids stay strong, healthy and safe this school year by putting wellness front and center. “Thinking about back-to-school now can help parents keep kids on track for a healthy summer and start to school,” says Dr. Sandra Hassink, MD, FAAP, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics. With that in mind, Hassink recommends taking the following steps.

Ease into the School Schedule

Ease the back-to-school transition by

keeping bedtime and meals scheduled during the summer and adjusting timing as school approaches. If your child has been going to bed later than usual, begin adjusting his or her bedtime earlier toward the end of summer. Depending on age, children and teens need between 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep nightly. For young children, arranging to see their new classroom and meet their new teacher before school starts can calm first day jitters. Go over the school schedule with your child, including how she will get to school and what the plans are for after school time.

The back-to-school season is a good time for scheduling a pediatric exam. Create a list of items you want to discuss with your child’s pediatrician. This list should include ensuring your child is up-to-date on vaccinations, a crucial part of preventive care. It’s a good idea to build a medical home with a pediatrician by sticking with one doctor or medical practice throughout childhood and adolescence. The doctor will be better informed of your child’s medical history and aware of any emerging problems. Beyond medical testing, pediatricians are well-equipped to counsel patients and parents on emotional and social issues, as well as issues that often crop up during adolescence, such as smoking, drugs, drinking, sexual activity and depression. “Parents can ask a pediatrician about anything related to the care of their child or teen, medical or not,” says Dr Hassink. “The visit can be a good way to bring up these issues.”

Consider Sports

Sports can foster confidence, cooperation and healthy habits, and the start of the school year brings many opportunities to join various programs. Hydration, nutrition and proper conditioning are important for any sport, especially those with intense training in warm weather. Schedule a sports physical with your pediatrician to discuss your child’s overall health and how to prevent injuries.

Talk Safety

If your child will be walking to school, travel the route with him to assess its safety. Find out about traffic patterns and crossing guards. Teach your child safety rules like looking both ways. If possible, have your child commute with an older sibling or neighbor. If your child will be riding a bike or skateboard, be sure he wears a helmet. Review basic rules for safer riding. Bus riders should also be mindful of safety rules, like remaining in one’s seat and listening to the driver. More back-to-school tips can be found at www.healthychildren.org. As a parent, you can take steps to help ensure your children are prepared for a happy, healthy school year.

ESO kicks off new season with actor Brian Dennehy ELMHURST — “A Season of Celebration” promises to bring excitement and musical delights to Elmhurst Symphony audiences as both Stephen Alltop, ESO’s Music Director, and Rika Seko, ESO Concertmaster, celebrate their 20th anniversaries with the orchestra. Concert programs ranging from Mozart to Copland are sure to please a wide range of musical tastes, and special events throughout the season will infuse the concert experience with a celebratory flavor. The season opener on October 17 at 7 p.m., “Copland’s Music of the Heartland,” features the acclaimed stage, screen and television actor Brian Dennehy, who will narrate two remarkable works: Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait and Schwantner’s New Morning for the World, based on the powerful speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. Stanger Young Artist Audition winner Joshua Brown plays Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie, and the ESO performs the Suite from another Copland favorite, Appalachian Spring. A barbeque dinner with two seatings will precede the concert, and Dennehy will join guests for a brief visit during this time. Reservations are required; visit elmhurstsymphony.org for ticket information and details. “Mozart Madness,” featuring six of the finest singers in Chicago performing arias and scenes from three of Mozart’s operatic masterpieces, with staging and supertitles, follows in November. In January, “Vivaldi, Telemann and Beyond” offers glorious gems of the Baroque period by Vivaldi, Telemann and other favorite composers, performed by members of the ESO. The Apollo Chorus takes center

stage in March when it joins forces with the ESO and a stellar cast of soloists in a not-to-be-missed performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah. The season ends in May with “Mutual Admiration: Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky,” highlighted by Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat, performed by Rika Seko and her long-time friend, Venezuelan-born violist Anibal Dos Santos, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor. Concert dates are as follows: Copland: Music of the Heartland Saturday, October 17, 2015, 7 p.m. Mozart Madness Sunday, November 15, 2015, 3 p.m. Vivaldi, Telemann and Beyond! Sunday, January 24, 2016, 3 p.m. Mendelssohn’s Elijah Sunday, March 13, 2016, 3 p.m. Mutual Admiration: Beethoven, Mozart & Tchaikovsky Saturday, May 7, 2016, 7 p.m. You can still subscribe for the 55th season of the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra as it performs in the state-of-the-art facility at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church. In this spectacular season the Symphony will offer five different concerts; patrons can choose packages of three to five concerts or individual tickets. To become a member or request a season brochure, call (630) 941-0202 or visit elmhurstsymphony.org.

The PPI is an easy-to-understand alert system that informs the public about the risk of contracting WNV, as well as the steps that should be taken to protect themselves and their families. The PPI widget provides residents with a real-time snapshot of WNV activity in the county, which ranges from zero to three, zero meaning there is no risk and three announcing a high level of risk with multiple confirmed human cases of WNV. Many community partners including townships, municipalities and park districts, also have the PPI widget posted to their homepages. DUPAGE COUNTY—The DuPage County Health Department reports that the number of mosquito batches testing positive for the presence of West Nile virus (WNV) in DuPage County is increasing and that consequently increases the risk that residents might contract WNV. The Health Department advises residents to be cautious and avoid mosquito bites, but they should not curtail outdoor activities. The weather forecast for the next week includes warmer temperatures and that also increases the potential for the increased presence of WNV. No human cases of WNV disease have been reported in DuPage County this year. The Health Department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) widget has been raised from one
