& BABY BOOMERS,
To our family, friends, and the Burlington, Paddock Lake, and neighboring communities:
In 1906, shortly after the great California earthquake, William Reineman came from California to Burlington, Wis. He settled into the Burlington community and started Reineman’s Hardware and General Store. His son Willis joined the family business and continued operating Reineman’s Hardware. In the late 1950s, he joined the True Value Hardware Cooperative, and the business became Reineman’s True Value.
Around that time, Fred Koenen joined the Reineman’s business and helped it to thrive in the community. In the late 1970s, Fred purchased Willis’ shares in the business and became the CEO of Reineman’s. The Koenen family has been involved with Reineman’s True Value since. Fred, his wife Mary Jo, and their three children - Cheryl, Jeff, and June - all spent time in the business. In 1985, Cheryl’s husband, Bill Ahler, started in the business and eventually became manager of the Paddock Lake location. Cheryl’s children - Samantha and Marissa - and June’s future husband, William (Wilbr) Weyrauch, all worked at the family business.
In the early 2000s, Fred started to step back, but never away, from the daily operations of Reineman’s True Value. At that time, Cheryl, who started in 1979, and Jeff, who started in 1980, started taking over the daily operations of the business, thriving in Burlington, Paddock Lake, and Waterford - although Waterford was eventually closed.
Since 2020, Cheryl and Jeff had been working on the succession planning of the Reineman’s True Value legacy. This was especially difficult because Cheryl and Bill’s children moved out of the area, as did June and her husband. The succession planning has taken many twists and turns, but the future of Reineman’s True Value will be arriving.
The decision has been made that Reineman’s True Value in Burlington and Paddock Lake, as well as Burlington Square, will be sold to Mark and Angela Heineman of Delavan. This transition will be taking place on Nov. 1, 2024.
Even though the businesses are being sold, Cheryl, Bill, and Jeff are planning to remain on top help the transition, up through the next year. We are looking forward to working with the Heinemans to keep the hardware store thriving in Southeast Wisconsin and to remain strong members in the communities.
The initial decision to sell Reineman’s was extremely difficult and emotional for the Koenen and Ahler families, as we have been involved with Reineman’s for over 40 years for Cheryl and Jeff, and Fred for over 60 years. We are looking forward to this next chapter in our lives, and we are looking forward to still being active in our communities and helping the hardware stores to remain strong and active in our communities.
With gratitude and thankfulness,
Fred and Mary Jo Koenen, Cheryl and Bill Ahler, Jeff and Amy Koenen, and June and William Weyrauch
