Korean War vets hold state reunion in Rockford By Margaret Downing REPORTER
On July 16, Deputy Council General Jaewoong Lee addressed approximately 45 Korean War veteran and their spouses at the Korean War Veterans Association Annual State Reunion held this year at the Holiday Inn and Hoffman House in Rockford. Deputy Council Lee had this to say in speaking to attendees: “First of all I would like to convey my congratulations to the Korean War Veterans Association of Illinois for its dedication and hard work on today’s memorial ceremony. Also, my special thanks go to Robert Fitts, Commander of the Illinois KWVA - and all the veterans and families for being with us here today. Please send my regards to other veterans who can’t be here today due to health issues. “When the war broke in 1950, the United States sent 1.8 million troops to Korea to defend freedom and democracy. Most soldiers might not have previously heard the name of the country of Korea, much less its location. “Still, they were brave and defiant and fought fiercely with Korean soldiers. Their value is still resonating among Koreans who remember them. They also showed deep kindness and friendship to ordinary Korean civilians. “Many soldiers perished and more than 100,000 were injured or missing in action. On behalf of the Korean government and all Korean people, I pay tribute to all Korean War veterans living and to those who perished in saving my country. Without their devotion and sacrifices, South Korea would not exist today - and I would not be here either. “The small, poor, devastated country they fought for has grown to be one of the most prosperous countries with full-fledged democracy. We even call this ourselves ‘a miracle.’ In the course of our growth, the help and cooperation by the United States was indispensable. “As a most important ally in Northeast Asia, Korea has consistently strengthened its bilateral relationship with the United States. The values and interests of our two countries are remarkably well aligned. “The Republic of Korea/American alliance with strong U.S. troops continuously stationed in the South Korean territory has been the firm bedrock for stability and prosperity of the Kore-

an Peninsula, and it will continue to hold our two countries together. Indeed, the alliance has never been better. “Earlier this year we witnessed North Korea again conducting nuclear testing. In its wake, the United Nations Security Council adopted Reso-
lution 2270 containing the most comprehensive and robust sanctions. “At this juncture, alliance and the combined role of South Korea and the U.S. to permanently change North Korea’s dangerous and provocative behavior is more prominent than ever. “Now is the time for the international community, along with South Korea and the United States, to fully implement the sanctions so that North Korea will feel pressure and make the right strategic choice. The Korean government is going to spare no efforts in dismantling the North Korean nuclear and missile program, and in bringing back peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and beyond. “As we all know, the Korean War is sometimes called the ‘forgotten war.’ But it will never be forgotten by the South Korean people, tens of
thousands of veterans, their families and friends. On this occasion to commemorate the Korean Conflict, I once again send my praise and thanks to all of you who have safeguarded our country through the years with an enduring devotion.” KWVA members and spouses are involved each year in a reunion, held in different cities, such as Springfield, Rock Island, Danville and Rockford. According to KWVA Director and Recruiter Robert “Bob” Fitts of Rock Island, there are currently 10 chapters throughout the state of Illinois and 800-900 members. The Korean Conflict lasted from June 1950 until July 1953. A total of 33,739 Americans gave their lives in the war and as of a year ago, seven million veterans were still living. Members keep in touch through chapter meetings, reunions and their bi-monthly newsletter, “Graybeards.”

On the go: Pokémon Go craze gets people out of the house
t’s all the rage and a cutting-edge craze – sweeping not only the nation, but the entire world. If you don’t have an inkling of understanding about what the verve is all about, chances are you’re aware of the buzz about Pokémon Go. And, if you’re like me, you wish you had the foresight to invest in the Nintendo Company a couple of months ago. Pokémon Go is a new game played on mobile devices. On July 12, less than a week after it was first released, the app became the most active mobile game in the United States ever with 21 million users. This thing is bigger than Candy Crush Saga. Mobile apps are a dime a dozen (or often free, as is the case with Pokémon Go). Except this game is different from the others in one major way. It is location-based. You can’t play while sitting in your living room. The game requires that you go out. Into the real world. To find and catch imaginary Pokémon (animal-like

cartoon creatures) and hatch their eggs. Makes perfect sense. Hatching eggs requires a couple of things: a virtual incubator and walking. If kids (and kids who have already technically grown up) want to hatch an egg, they first place it in an incubator located on their phone. Then they get moving. In the real world, in real time. Eggs take anywhere from two to 10 kilometers to hatch. For those of you not living on the metric side of things, one kilometer is a little more than half a mile. The app keeps track of the distance you’ve traveled and hatches the egg accordingly. And don’t even think about cheat-
ing the system. Distance counting stops when a player exceeds a certain speed, so driving in a car doesn’t count toward egg hatching. You’ve got to hoof it. Players travel between places like PokeStops and PokeGyms (located at various places around town) to capture and battle – all while they are outside, exercising without even realizing it. Here’s the Poké magic: they just think they are having fun. There hasn’t been anything this ingenious since kick-the-can. At least that’s this mom’s perspective. Pre-Pokémon, I was the one battling – to get my kids off the couch and away from the screen. Now they’ve still got the screen, but at least they are off the couch. Playing outside. With friends. Poke me. Nothing this popular can skate (or walk) by without some amount of criticism. People walking or biking while staring at their phone screens is like distracted driving without the car. Walking the streets after dark
may put kids at risk of not being seen by motorists. And, players hunting Pokémon at places like museums, cemeteries, memorial sites and fire stations isn’t always embraced by the non-players visiting or working at those sites. Still, I’m a proponent. My kid hasn’t played any indoor video games in the last week. If you are the mom of a 14-year-old boy, you understand the immensity and nearly miraculous significance of that statement. I’ve heard adults (myself included) lament nostalgically over the good old days, when summer and childhood meant getting on your bike and exploring the woods or going to a nearby park and whiling away the hours until it was time to go home for lunch, or maybe even supper if you’d eaten a big enough breakfast or packed yourself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My kid is doing that. His bike is broken, so he’s been riding mine – a
no speed, over-sized, fender-laden mom bike if you’ve ever seen one. He doesn’t care about his lack of fancy wheels because he is having fun. He leaves in the morning and makes a quick pit stop for lunch. His face has developed a warm summer glow. He’s meeting up with friends and finding new ones. The game’s even taught him about kilometer conversion. So, for now I can overlook the fact that his summer reading isn’t yet complete. We’ll get to that. Summer should be a time of playing outside with your friends. This new game may not be perfect, but it isn’t a perfect world. I’ll take what I can get. And for this summer, at least, it’s all about the go. Pokémon Go. he joy house sold in nine days. We were in the mountains on vacation when we got the realtor’s message. The text message came through but not voice mail. No signal for hours until we got to our B&B for the night. All we knew was, “Call me. We have an offer.” It was a good offer. We did the countering over the phone that night and reached an agreement. The realtor emailed us the contract and we signed electronically. The next morning our B&B owner asked if we wanted to buy his place. We seriously considered it. you looking for?” “Oh, it could be anything, it just has to feel right.” Realtors hate Zillow.com, but I’ve been addicted this past year. We got home July 4 and a for sale by owner condo popped up on Zillow. July 5 we did a drive by and the owner was outside. We made an appointment to tour two days later. It was the one. Ease. A condo gives that. We can be gypsy travelers and have a home base. The place has a good view, quiet and peaceful, high ceiling and a fireplace. It’s not a “normal” condo surrounded by other condos where you either look at your neighbor building or a parking lot. We have trees, a green yard, and a natural pond. Private. And someone else mows. No one has a view into our windows. Not that I roam around naked, but I could. The fireplace is not standard condo - it is floor to
ceiling stone. We did a couple visits and pulled the trigger. We’re going condo. 1750 square feet so it’s not tiny, but we’re being very selective what gets moved. The releasing of stuff is in full force. It feels good. The idea of a condo had appeal and we had looked before, but didn’t find. When we took a breath and said it let it be easy, this one appeared. That’s our dream lifestyle motto, let it be easy. Things have been falling in to place seamlessly, with the sale of this one and the purchase of that one. Every morning I write in my journal, let it be easy. So far, so good.

“dream lifestyle.” So as we looked at properties, we asked ourselves if this felt like ease and fun (our guiding words.) We’ve looked at many amazing homes, mansions and condos and condos that were as big as mansions. The house on the hill with 6 bedrooms, the tudor with 10 acres, the barn and buildings that were once a half-million dollar property and now needed loving….did we want to take on a project? We knew we could make beautiful, but did it feel like ease and fun? In addition to here at home, over this past year we have traveled and looked, and on this mountain trip, we looked at places too. Cabins and Victorians and one that literally had a view to die for - we could not even make it up the treacherous mountain road. Nothing felt right. We’re not a realtor’s dream client. “What are

FOR THE RECORD ARE YOU A METAL MOUTH? Despite our best efforts, most patients in our practice have had at least one cavity and filling in their lives, and if you are in your thirties or older, there is a good chance that at least some of your flings were made of metal. Recently these fillings have become a controversial topic in the health press. This material, known as “amalgam,” is actually a combination of silver, tin, copper, zinc, and - at the top of the controversy - Mercury. Many of us remember being introduced to mercury in an elementary school science class. As the only metal that is liquid at room temperature, it was always fun when the teacher showed us how an actual metal can flow inside a tube, but drop the tube or break a mercury filled thermometer and look out! As toxic poison it had to be cleaned up with extreme caution. So if mercury is so dangerous, what the heck is it doing in your mouth? While metal amalgam fillings do give off small amounts of mercury vapor, most researchers, including The American Dental Association Council On Scientific Affairs, have concluded that unless there is a specific allergy these types of fillings pose on personal health risk. But visit our office today and you will find that we recommend doing “fillings” (also known as “dental restorations”) with other materials. Why? There are many reasons. Here are just a few. 1. BEAUTY. There is no doubt about it - silver fillings are not attractive. The modern materials we use these days are tooth colored ones, so only your dental team needs to know that your beautiful smile once contained a few cavities. 2. BONDING. While a traditional filling is simply wedged into your tooth, making it more prone to breakage, most of the more modern materials actually adhere to the tooth itself. In many cases this means that less healthy tooth need to be removed in order to perform a proper restoration, and these materials are less prone to “leaks” where decay and bacteria can easily form at the junction of the tooth and restoration. 3. EXPANSION and Contraction. Ever have trouble removing the lid on a jar? Run the lid under some hot water and it pops right off. Why? The heat causes the metal lid to expand slightly. Well, the same thing happens with an amalgam (metal) filling. And years of expansion and contraction from eating hot and cold food can damage the tooth and the restoration. Choose a more modern material and go have that ice cream and coffee. Yum!!
Any questions? at Rockton Dental Care your health and comfort come first! Feel free to give us a call at 815-624-2626 to schedule an appointment or to discuss any dental health matters
