Operation Dropbox has record year of donations, support from the community
The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is pleased to announce the results of the 5th Annual Operation Dropbox donation drive to benefit Veterans Path to Hope, a local organization whose purpose is to support local veterans in need in the areas of housing and employment assistance, transitional living, basic needs (food, furniture, household goods, etc.), peer support activities, caregiver training, and counseling.
This year, Operation Dropbox saw an unprecedented level of community support, with 87 organizations participating as drop site locations for public donations, shattering the program’s previous best of 31 participating organizations. The total weight of donations for 2024 also surpassed last year’s total of 5,466 pounds, reaching 8,283 pounds.
On June 11, the MCDH convened volunteers from the McHenry County Medical Reserve Corps and Veterans Path to Hope at the McHenry County Division of Transportation
to hold a state-mandated exercise, utilizing the donations collected to simulate the process of unloading and distributing medical countermeasures during emergencies.
Operation Dropbox, now in its fifth year, has grown tremendously, showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting local veterans. The success of this event is made possible through the collaboration of the MCDH, Veterans Path to Hope, McHenry County Veterans Assistance Commission, McHenry County Division of Transportation, and the dedicated volunteers from the McHenry County Medical Reserve Corps.
For more information about Veterans Path to Hope, please call (815) 321-4673 or visit veteranspathtohope.org.

Christmas in July coming to Volo Museum July 26-28
Celebrate the spirit of Christmas with family fun, fantastic entertainment
Santa is coming early this year to the Volo Museum, and the public is invited to share in what surely will be a most magical, memorable experience.
“We are preparing a summer celebration like no other,” said Jim Wojdyla, marketing director for the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road, Volo. “Join us July 26, 27 and 28 for ‘Christmas in July,’ a unique, festive extravaganza that will bring holiday cheer to the heart of summer.”
Visitors can immerse themselves in a sun-soaked holiday adventure, as museum officials deck the halls and create a Summertime Santa’s Workshop. There, families can meet Santa and his elves, capture the magic with a Summer Santa photo session, and share their holiday wishes.
Unleash creativity and craft delicious treats at a cookie-decorating session. Dive into festive arts and crafts, coloring activities, holiday ornament-making and more. Kids can even get a jump start on their Christmas wish lists, with a letterwriting station and special North Pole delivery services available on-site.
Adding a dash of nostalgia to the merriment, the legendary Rock-afire Explosion animatronic band, of ShowBiz Pizza Place origin, will perform their rarely seen live Christmas shows dating to 1982 and 1987. Concerts will take place approximately every 30 minutes beginning at 11 a.m. July 26-28, and are included with regular admission.
“These are shows that people probably have not seen anywhere live since the 1990s,” said Brian Grams, museum
director. “It is a very rare opportunity.”
Grams and Wojdyla anticipate terrific crowds for the Christmas in July festivities, especially given the Rockafire Explosion’s clearly enduring draw.
Throngs of appreciative visitors attended when Volo first debuted their refurbished set on June 2. “People traveled from all over the country — West Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Michigan — so we learned just how popular these guys are and to what extent fans are willing to go to see them,” Grams said.
The band’s enclosed stage features broad, outdoor courtyard-facing doors that open when a concert is about to begin. “Rather than attempt to share these Christmas concerts with fans in inclement December weather, Christmas in July is the perfect opportunity,” Grams added.
“This will be great family fun.”
The Volo Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. All Christmas in July activities are included free with a Platinum, Gold or Volo Museum ticket.
Platinum and Gold passes provide a two-day experience with free admission the second consecutive day. Admission starts as low as $24.95 for adults and $13.95 for children ages 5 to 12, with free entry for children ages 4 and younger. Separate single-day admission to the Jurassic Gardens dinosaur park is $16.95 each; free for children 4 and younger. Museum members enjoy free admission to all attractions.

Local community leader honored with invitation to event at Fort McCoy
Paul J. Hettich Contributor
The United States strives today to engage the civilian population and conduct community outreach activities and events to tell the “Army” story. Many U.S. Army installations conduct events such as concerts, celebrations, and tours, which allow civilians’ access to experience them and observe what Army life looks like.
On Monday, June 17, the 88th Readiness Division (Fort McCoy, Wisconsin and Fort Snelling, Minnesota) hosted a Community Leader Engagement to inform and educate selected civilians for this opportunity. The 88th Readiness Division Public Affairs Office and Strategic Outreach Planning Team invited 20 distinguished visitors including elected local representatives and senators, business and corporate leaders, community partners, etc. for this Community Leader Engagement.
The Community Leader Engagement started with a welcome by the 88th Readiness Division Commander, Major General Baker. The first event was the Medical Simulation Center, a stateof-the-art center where Soldiers train in real-world medical situations ultimately culminating in complex military medical and Sol-
diering events. From there, participants had the opportunity to fire M4 rifles in the simulation weapon complex. Next, some participants flew in Blackhawk Helicopters while others visited the Fort McCoy Historical Museum and Barracks. The final event was going to a range in the field to actually observe Soldiers from Rockford, Illinois qualifying on their M4 weapons. Mrs. Michele Bauman, Avon Township Supervisor (Lake County, Illinois) was recommended by U.S. Army Reserve Ambassador – Illinois Colonel (Retired) Paul J. Hettich of Antioch, to attend this event. Michele is an Illinois elected official and also serves as a member of various organizations, including the Grayslake area Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, National Exchange Club, and co-founder of the Lake County Military Families United As One. Without previous experience in the military and a daughter who sought to serve her country, Michele founded the Lake County Military Families United As One, as a venue to connect those affiliated with the military and experienced backgrounds with newcomers to the military life. Michele diligently advocates for the U.S. military and has
built a relationship with the Round Lake Recruiting Station due to her only daughter, Madeline enlisting there.
This is a unique story in which, both the mother (Michele) and daughter (Madeline) were actually training at the same time, doing Army “stuff” with Michele firing an M4 at the weapons simulation center at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, and Madeline working with her M4 to zero at Fort Sill, Oklahoma hundreds of miles apart. Perhaps a more sobering moment, Michele shared, was the medical simulation center tour. It was surreal for her to see the training simulations and learn that the training she saw was to prepare medics to be ready to go into a hostile environment to help save the lives of Soldiers. Michele’s daughter’s job will be in medical logistics where Madeline may be responsible for ensuring that medics have the equipment they need to help our injured Soldiers. Every Soldier has a job, and every job has a role in the Army. At the rifle range, Major General Baker made an impactful statement, saying ‘our enemies were shooting at us because of the flag we wear on our uniform.’ Her daughter wears the same uniform as every Soldier. Michele left the Community Leader Engagement event, she noticed an American flag inside a display cabinet and when she looked closer at the flag, there was a picture of a Soldier and the words Freedom is Never Free. That Soldier was someone’s son. Less than one percent of people serve in the military today. For families with a military service background, enlisting in one of our military branches may be relatively normal and uneventful. However, for a family and a daughter without any military experience, to join the Army was a life-changing event. This is where the crucial role of community support comes in, making the transition smoother and the journey less daunting for these families.
Michele Bauman was with her only daughter, Madeline, throughout the entire Army enlistment process - a process, which was difficult, complex, and long, but ultimately extremely rewarding. Madeline joined the U.S. Army Reserves and was recently accepted into the Northern Illinois University ROTC program. The 88th Readiness Division Community Leader Engagement was an educational, professional, and humbling experience for the new military mom.
