Albany youth basketball players are excited to practice on their newly installed backboards. Long-time custodian Buck Nipple recalls the previous hoops being installed sometime in the mid-seventies. The new backboards are heightadjustable which will allow younger players to shoot at an eight-foot-high hoop. Physical education teacher Jill Schott is excited about the new additions to the elementary gym, too. “Having four adjustable backboards will be extremely valuable when teaching younger students essential basketball skills specific to shooting,” she said. “They will find greater suc-

Ramos wins Rural Teacher of the Year award By Aurora Daniels

Penny Ramos of Juda School District was recently honored by being named the 2016 Wisconsin Rural Teacher of the Year. The Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance recognized her during the annual Rural Schools Conference on Nov. 10 in Stevens Point. Currently a fourth-grade teacher at Juda Elementary School, Ramos has made a positive impact on students and student achievements. She has also demonstrated leadership in the school district and in the community. “I am honored to receive this recognition,” Ramos said. “I feel very fortunate to work in a district with so many dedicated teachers who truly care about helping students achieve. Juda is a great community where parents, community members, and businesses all care about the school and our children.” Ramos graduated in 1984 from the Juda School District. She then attended the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater and earned her

degree in education. Ramos now teaches in the same place where she was first taught, and she is giving her talents back to the community. Highly respected by the staff and students, Ramos demonstrates positive leadership in everyday activities around the school. Juda School District Superintendent Traci Davis nominated Ramos for this award. “I have had the pleasure of being her principal/ superintendent for the past four years, and she has been an invaluable resource to me,” Davis said. “Ramos is knowledgeable about the subject matter she teaches and the developmental level of the students. She is organized, engaging, and is always trying to stay abreast of the best practices in the education field.” Ramos has constantly been a thoughtful and caring teacher throughout her years at Juda School. Her love of teaching and her compassion for her students is illustrated by the cutting-edge instruction she presents in her class-

Juda’s Penny Ramos accepts the 2016 Wisconsin Rural Teacher of the Year award.

By Beth Blakemore CORRESPONDENT

The Nov. 14 Albany School Board meeting included subjects such as administrative reports, overtime for hourly workers, an Athletic Director’s report, scholarships, and a tech. ed position. Connie Gregerson started the administrative reports with information on a Wisconsin Rural Advocacy Award, which was given in Stevens Point. The entire school held a mock election. A book fair fundraiser brought in over $2,500. The first round of math testing was completed. The Student Council had a red ribbon week, which focused on the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Homecoming week went well. Students played their first powder puff game. The high school math team placed second in Plattevillle. There was a Financial Aid Night COURTESY PHOTO Brodhead Independent-Register at the school. The girls went to State in cross country. SENIOR OF THE WEEK The senior of the week is Miranda Klitzman. She will be attending Blackhawk Technical College to obtain her associate degree in nursing to become a nurse practitioner. Her favorite high school memory was senior Homecoming Week. Her advice to underclassmen is, “Study and get good grades because it will definitely help in the long run!” Her role model is Mrs. Bredeson, her English teacher. In high school, her favorite class is English. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL On Tuesday, Nov. 15, the Panthers won their first game of the season against Madison Country Day. The final score was 82-16. Chelsea Burkhalter scored a gamehigh of 21 points. Of those 21 points, she hit three three-pointers. Maddie Roth score 15 points and also made three three-pointers. Alexis Goecks and Mackenzie Byrne scored nine points. Hannah Powers and Erika Decker added

room every day. Also a lead supporter of the community, Ramos co-chairs the Recreation District. Whether it be through painting picnic tables, cleaning bathrooms, or mowing the yard, Ramos has been integral in keeping the park a viable option for the community to use. Ramos’s support for the school and community has been greatly appreciated by those students she has taught and the community members she has helped. She is very deserving of this honor for all she has done to make the school a wonderful place to learn. The Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to the aid and support of rural school districts through providing a strong rural education. By being selected as the 2016 Wisconsin Rural Teacher of the Year, Ramos is now qualified for the National Rural Education Association Teacher of the Year Program. The school and community support Ramos in this next level of competition.

classes. The board discussed overtime pay for hourly workers. This was for those working on the yearbook and on game clocks, etc. The Athletic Director, Dereck Doescher, wished to thank all fall coaches. Cross country was successful, as well as Albany-Evansville football, named division champions. Winter sports present a challenge. Twelve players were signed up for the varisty and JV basketball teams, but only eleven showed up for practice. This means it will be hard to have both a JV and varsity team with players only allowed to play 3 halves. As a result, the school will support only a varsity team. There is $10,000 dollars in the scholarship fund without a Scholarship Committee. A Scholarship Committee needs to be formed to decide how to spend the money. Teachers could be writing grants. The Monticello School District has offered a fulltime position to a tech. ed. teacher the district shares with Albany. In order to keep him, Albany will need to consider offering him incentives; otherwise, the district will need to seek a new teacher to fill his position.

Nick is working on mosaics, Charlayna is working on tattoo art, and Abbey is working with mixed media. MUSIC DEPARTMENT On Nov. 17, Juda hosted the eighth-grade conference band event. Students from the Six Rivers East Conference gathered in Juda to rehearse for the day and perform a concert that night. We would like to thank all of the bands in our conference for participating in this event. They attended the University’s metal casting center, TechWorks,

they paid two visits to the University’s foundry, and they even got to pour molten metal! High school seniors can apply if they plan to continue their educations at accredited schools and if their households receive electricity or natural gas from the co-op.

Instead of using paper forms as in past years, Rock Energy now is accepting online applications. Just visit www.rock. coop, click on Your Benefits, and scroll down to Scholarship Programs. An independent scholarship committee will judge applicants on general merit, cooperation, leadership abilities, financial need, and class ranking. The deadline for submitting applications is Wednesday, Jan. 11. If you have any questions, please contact Barbara Uebelacker at 866-752-4550 or barbu@rock.coop.

The 2017 budget for Green County has passed! Thank you to all who attended the county board meeting on Nov. 9 or called a supervisor to voice opinions about the budget. All input is important and valued. There are no surprises or anything out of the ordinary in the budget compared to previous years; it is a tight budget, but comprehensive. There are a few one-time expenditures, including a video conferencing system, an IT audit and IT equipment, the hydrogeological study, replacement of a John Deere mower, and painting the clock tower to name a few. Being a new supervisor and this being my first time seeing the budgeting process up close, I am excited and optimistic about the knowledge and skill involved in our local county government. Residents of Green County, you are in good hands.

The Nov. 9 meeting covered more than just the 2017 budget. There were several other orders of business on the agenda, one of which was the approval of a resolution authorizing a new position at the Sheriff’s Department, specifically a new full-time dispatcher position. According to Sheriff Rohloff, deputies are often times taken off patrol in order to cover at the dispatch office. The effect is that there are fewer deputies available to respond to calls. Adding a dispatcher position will increase the safety of our county, and our deputies will be able to respond to calls more efficiently. As we are winding up our calendar year the usual winding down of our countryside is in full swing, getting ready to rest the fields and farmers until spring. The last of the crops are being harvested, bales are appearing in fields, snow fencing is sprouting along the roadsides, and snowmobiles are getting tune-ups in anticipation of winter recreation. It

The latest research on this topic suggests that a consistent attitude of gratitude may have multiple health benefits including better cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, an improved immune system, less stress, better sleep, and reduced risk of depression. To foster thankfulness, start your day by giving thanks for five people in your life. Be thankful for simple things (morning coffee, sunshine, running water). Acknowledge your riches, count your blessings. Look for the positive in negative situations. Express thanks to others with words and deeds. Keep a gratitude journal; record a few things each day.

Three new businesses welcomed in Orfordville By Derek Hoesly CORRESPONDENT

The investment in small businesses shined on a breezy Saturday morning as three businesses held ribbon cutting ceremonies in downtown Orfordville. The three businesses included 100 Proof Design Co., Gramma Habba’s Vintage Treasures and More, and Valz Primz. The owner of 100 Proof Design Co. is Becky Strupp. She and her family moved to Orfordville a year ago. The push that Becky needed to start up 100 Proof Design Co. came from her husband, Don. He wanted his garage back, which was filled with a

lot of items Strupp would use in her store. She always wanted to set up a shop that was more than just your average little flee market store. One of Strupp’s passions is promoting art, both modern and classic. Art is present throughout the shop, but she would love to have more local artists’ work to display. The thing that makes 100 Proof Design Co. unique is the wide array of items that customers can purchase. Some of the items for sale include soap from local soap maker, Dirty Bear Soap (Ericka Sloniker) and jewelry from Deb Mortl, out of Mequon, who makes hand recycled skateboard

jewelry. A special Christmas feature will be handmade chocolates from Elizabeth and Daniel Donoghue (The Chocolate Caper-store front in Oregon). The store hours for 100 Proof Design Co. are 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. On Saturday mornings, the shop hosts a coffee club from 10 a.m. to noon in the month of November. For just $5, you can bring your own mug and drink all the coffee you want and make new friends. “I really want this to be a community place, not a place you stop in and

look around and you leave,” Strupp said. “I want this to be a place where you lean up against the bar and have a cup of coffee and talk about what’s going on in town and things that are happening.” Another shop new to Orfordville is Gramma Habba’s Vintage and More. Owner Tammy Grover Hahn runs a full-time cleaning business in Beloit, where she manages about 30 employees. When this opportunity arose, it had to fit into her schedule. Hahn says has a love for the hunt and resale of vintage items. “I sell vintage in the raw,” Hahn said. “I don’t do anything with my products. I buy as is, and I think in this day and age there are a lot of people that like that kind of stuff.” Hahn believes firmly that not only will Gramma Habba’s Vintage Treasures and More succeed, but so will 100 Proof Design Co. and Valz Primz. She believes the community will continue to support these new businesses. The store hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8:30

a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday by appointment. When asked about the impact of the economic board, Hahn said, “It’s been a good ride. They’re there to help us. They want us to thrive putting in the money that’s available to fix the exterior and to help us inside with whatever we need.” The third shop welcomed to Orfordville last weekend is Valz Primz. Owner Valerie Lund repurposes old windows and anything rusty. “I love rusty!” she said. Most of the items in the shop are one-of-a-kind. Lund usually doesn’t make more than one of the same item so people aren’t buying the same product. The store hours for Valz Primz are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday by appointment. Orfordville will be having a Shop Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26. This is a great chance for people to come out and support these local businesses.

Veteran’s Day at the Parkview School District

Children’s Christmas Benefit coming Dec. 3 The 18th annual Children’s Christmas Benefit will be held at the Orfordville American Legion on Saturday, Dec. 3. Many exciting holiday events will highlight this year’s benefit. At 5 p.m., a lighted Christmas parade will proceed through downtown Orfordville. At 6 p.m., the evening will kick off with a delicious pork chop supper sponsored by the Rock County Pork Producers. Donations will be accepted for the meal. Santa Clause will be on hand for the children. Raffles will be held throughout the evening. The Stateline Playboys will provide entertainment from 8 p.m. to midnight. Bring your entire family for an evening of holiday fellowship and fun! The toys and gifts collected during this event are distributed discreetly and confidentially among local county children so their Christmas will be merrier. The purpose of the benefit is to give to the kids what they would not otherwise have during the holiday season. One hundred percent of the contributions raised at the benefit go directly back into the community.

There are no administrative fees taken from the fundraiser, and the organization is entirely volunteer-driven. This event is sponsored by the Rock County Pork Producers, Rock County Dairy Promotion Council, Rock County Beef Producers, Rock County Farm Bureau, Larson Acres, Inc., Rock County 4-H, Seneca Foods, Orfordville American Legion, Country Pride Meats, Stables Bar and Grill, and Rock County Supervisor Brian Knudson. There is no charge for the evening’s entertainment or the meal. Donations will be accepted. All cash contributions will be used specifically for purchasing hats, mittens, boots, clothing, toys, and supplies for children from birth to high school age. The contributions also supply a Christmas meal to each of the families. Community members are encouraged to join in the fun and holiday spirit so that so many deserving children will have a merrier Christmas this year. Anyone with questions on this event should contact Brian Knudson at 608-897-6726.

Students wave flags at the end of the Veterans Day program at the Parkview Elementary School on Nov. 11.

Parkview school and district report cards released The Parkview School District earned four stars out of five on the state report card from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, issued for the 2015-16 school year. Based on the star rating, Parkview exceeds expectations for educating students. Report cards are issued based on four priority areas: student achievement in English language arts and mathematics, student growth, closing gaps between student populations, and measures of readiness for graduation and postsecondary success. Each school in the Parkview School District also received an individual state report card score. Parkview Elementary earned four stars out of five. Based on the star rating, Parkview exceeds expectations for educating students. Parkview Junior High and Parkview High School each earned three stars out of five on state report cards from the Wisconsin Department

of Public Instruction, issued for the 2015-16 school year. Based on the star rating, Parkview meets expectations for educating students. Parkview administers several internal assessments throughout the year to monitor student achievement and target instruction to identified growth areas. The teachers and administration in each school have analyzed the results provided in the report cards and are using the information, along with the results from internal assessments, to continue advancing the achievement level for all students. The results from the internal assessments are consistent with the results shown on the state report cards. The 2015-16 report cards underwent major changes that were part of Wisconsin Act 55, the 2015-17 state budget. Those changes include variable weighting to address the impacts of poverty on student achievement, a new model for measuring student

growth based on value-added methodology developed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the legislative requirement to change from the Badger Exam offered through the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium to the Forward Exam. Because report cards rely on multiple years of data, the 2015-16 report cards are based on one year each of Badger and Forward exams for grades three through eight and the ACT Plus Writing, as well as Dynamic Learning Maps assessments in grades three through eight and grade 11. The third year of data came from the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam and Wisconsin Alternate Assessment for Students with Disabilities. Using data from three different assessments in calculations, along with other legislated changes, makes comparisons of school and district performance to prior report card ratings inaccurate and inadvisable.

ed with a volley of shots by American Legion members, followed by “Taps,” played by Parkview senior Miranda Connell. In the afternoon, PES held their first-ever Veteran’s Day program. Sixth-grade teacher Sean Donagan had raised students’ awareness of what a veteran is a few weeks ago when he put up the Veterans’ Memorial Wall at PES. Music and band teacher Charlene Ulichny put on an amazing Veteran’s Day program with the help of the students. The students sang songs while the visitors were arriving and finding their seats. The American Legion then presented the colors, and everyone sang “TheStar-Spangled Banner.” Paige Valley, sixth-grade student and student council president, led the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The pledge was followed by an explanation of how Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Ms. Ulichny then asked all veterans present to stand for a round of applause. The veterans were told that students had made thank-you cards for them and that they would hand them out at the end of the program. A video of Red Skelton explaining the meaning of the words of the Pledge of Allegiance was then shown. This was followed by a video of the song “A Pittance of Time.” Students then sang “God Bless the USA.” Captain James H. Goodrich, who served in Vietnam in the Air Force, presented Ms. Strandt-Conroy with a certificate thanking the school for honoring veterans. Strandt-Conroy handed the certificate to teacher Sean Donagan for his effort to raise awareness of veterans with his wall project. Donagan said he put up the wall to remind students that anyone who served is a veteran, not just someone who died in a war. Students then sang a medley of patriotic songs (“America the Beautiful,”“My Country ‘tis of Thee,”“Yankee Doodle,” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag”) while sixth-grade students handed out small flags to students and guests. Once the students received their flags, they started waving them. Students continued to wave their flags as they were dismissed.

The Wells Davis Young Neal American Legion Post 209 held a Veterans Day program at Parkview JR/SR High at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. Chief Petty Officer Karl Stuvengen, U.S. Marine Corp, was Master of Ceremonies. The colors were presented, Stuvengen led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the high school concert choir sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Stuvengen reminded the audience that a veteran is anyone who has served in the military. Stuvengen added that the desire to defend what we hold dear, freedom, is the reason men and women serve in the military. Col. Mark A. Freitag, U.S. Army, retired, was the speaker. Freitag currently serves as City Manager for the City of Janesville. Freitag thanked all of the veterans in attendance for their service. He said that Veterans Day is a day of remembrance. It was originally called Armistice Day and was established on Nov. 11, 1919, by President Woodrow Wilson in honor of the armistice signed a year earlier. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied Nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as the “Great War.” In 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all veterans who served in the military at any time. Freitag spoke about the many different reasons a person may have to join the military. He said, “No one desires peace more than a soldier.” He spoke about some of the important experiences he had in the military and how they affected him. He also said, “No media can capture what life in the military is like; you must live it.” Freitag listed some of the things he misses now that he has retired, including the people he served with, the discipline, and the camaraderie. He encouraged those who wish to serve to do so, but to do it because they want to, not because someone else wants them to. After Freitag’s speech, Parkview teacher Cam Mueller gave a salute to veterans. The ceremony conclud-

Monroe man to display handmade plane at annual Fly-In BY DIANA VANCE

Flying in the wild blue yonder is Dave Waller’s dream. But he not only wanted to be a pilot. His dream was to build his own airplane. Four years ago, he began the job of constructing all the many wood pieces that go into building a plane. He was guided by plans from 1934. “The plane is made of Spruce, which has the best weight-to-strength ratio,” he explained. Waller found a business in Madison that sells the wood. “I am lucky to have a place nearby where I can get the proper wood,” he said. The wood comes 20 feet long, one foot wide, and 1.5 inches thick. He cut all the many pieces for the frame of the plane. Once he began constructing his plane, nothing could stop him. He is a clever man and found places to build the plane no matter what the season was. In the winter, he worked on his plane in his two-car garage. In warmer weather, he worked outside on his large cement driveway. And when it rained, he took one wing off the plane and set it up in his garage to work. Working on the plane is really a job of love for Waller. He puts hours and hours into building something that he

will cherish. He said he has one more year to go before it is completed. He will cover his plane with Dacron, and the propeller is made of Ash and an African wood called Padauk. “It will be tough as a baseball bat, and I will use a chain saw to cut it out,” he said with the smile of someone who knows what he is doing. Once finished, he intends to take flying lessons. He thinks it will be a galloping experience of up-anddown not too far off the ground at first. He believes that he will in time get the feel of the plane and understand the instruments. It just takes practice, and he is more than willing to be patient. Waller will attend the Brodhead Fly-In mid-July, an event that draws pilots from all over the United States and countries abroad. “This past July, there were pilots from the Netherlands, Brazil, England, and a guy I struck up a friendship with from Australia,” Waller said. Waller shared his excitement over the coming summer’s event. “There will be 700 planes there just like mine,” he said. When his plane is finished and his flying lessons mastered, Waller, with the freedom to fly, will explore he excitement that the sky will offer.

Pet of the Week

Cartwright is a four-year-old neutered male. Incredibly loving and wonderfully attentive, this black and white kitty is more than a pet; he is a forever friend. Cartwright’s curious green eyes are dazzling, as is his affectionate personality. He will always manage to bring a smile to your face while never leaving your side. A friend to other cats, Cartwright is a kind feline who can share his space with other furry faces. This devoted critter would do well in almost any loving household. The shelter is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and all holidays, with afternoon hours only Wednesday through Sunday. See website: www.greencountyhumane.org for new arrivals of cats and dogs, adoption fees, and upcoming events.
