Market lamb weigh-in scheduled for this month MONROE — An identification program for all market lambs to be exhibited at the 2016 Green County Fair will be conducted on Saturday, April 23, at the Green County Fairgrounds in Monroe. Lambs will be weighed and identified between 9 and 11 a.m. in the south end of barn #7. Only lambs that are identified on this date will be eligible for exhibition in the market lamb classes and to sell at the Green County Fair Meat Animal Auction. All market lambs that will be shown at the Green County Fair will be weighed and given RFID ear tags. Each exhibitor can identify a maximum of 5 lambs. Market lambs being identified for the Green County Fair can weigh no more than 105 pounds at the weighin. There is no minimum weight; however, it is suggested that lambs weigh at least 50 pounds or more in order to make the 110pound minimum weight at fair time that is needed to sell in the auction. Since the market lambs will be tagged with official USDA tags, they will no longer need to have scrapie tags at the fair. Exhibitors are reminded that all breeding

sheep will still be required to have a USDA scrapie tag before being allowed onto the fairgrounds this summer. The only exception to this is for breeding animals that have breed registration papers and a breed tattoo. If sheep exhibitors plan to exhibit breeding stock, they can order their own free scrapie tags by calling 1-866-873-2824. These tags should be ordered early since it usually takes several weeks before they are received from the United States Department of Agriculture. Only Green County Fair market lambs need to be pre-identified at this weighin. Animals that will exhibited in the sheep breeding show classes at the fair are not required to attend the weigh-in. Market lambs for the Wisconsin State Fair will also not be identified at the Green County weighin. Wisconsin State Fair requires that all lambs be self-identified by the exhibitors. Auction record books and other show information will also be distributed to exhibitors at the identification day. Contact Mark Mayer, UWExtension Dairy and Livestock Agent, at 608-3289440 for more information.

Herb Kohl Educational Foundation increases value of student scholarships

MILWAUKEE — High school seniors who were invited to the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation luncheon in Chippewa Falls earlier this month were stunned and delighted with the surprise announcement that all 2016 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation scholars will receive an additional $2,000 toward their scholarships, effective immediately. Students were notified by the foundation in March that they had been chosen to receive $3,000 scholarships from the foundation; instead, their awards will be $5,000. Herb Kohl asked Heidi Taylor-Eliopoulos, Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District Superintendent, to make the announcement. She learned the news just minutes before the program began. Scholars, their families, and other invited guests greeted the news with enthusiastic applause.

The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and teacher Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl in 1990. Annually, the foundation awards 200 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. In 2015, the program was expanded to include the Leadership Award for outstanding school principals. To date, the foundation has awarded $10.2 million to Wisconsin educators, students, and schools. “We are totally overwhelmed by the generosity and benevolence of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation,” said Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools Executive Director Sharon Schmeling. “By increasing the award to $5,000 per student, Herb Kohl is doing even more to help these outstanding students finance their higher education. We are so grateful that Wisconsin is home to such a visionary

philanthropist who is rewarding excellence in education so generously.” “During his time in office and through the creation of the Herb Kohl Foundation, U.S. Senator Herb Kohl has positively impacted the lives of countless Wisconsin residents,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers. “Kohl Foundation awards help bring equity for students wanting to further their learning and educators with student loan obligations. On behalf of the greater education community, I would like to thank Senator Kohl and the Kohl Foundation for their generous increase in awards and continued dedication to our schools.” “Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation. I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future. They’ll make many sacrifices to achieve their educational goals, and I want to help them succeed,” Kohl said. All scholarships for high school students graduating in 2016 have already been awarded. Herb Kohl Foundation Excellence Scholarship applications for students graduating in 2017 will be available at www.kohleducation.org beginning in September.

BRODHEAD — This week, Brodhead Memorial Public Library joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating the dynamic changes that are happening in today’s libraries. April 10–16 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians and library workers. Libraries today are more about what they do, for and with library users as opposed to what they have for patrons. Libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where people can collaborate using new technologies, learn how to use a 3D printer or just relax. Our library offers access to a variety of print and digital resources, including HeritageQuest which provides access to genealogical information; LearningExpress Library, which provides practice tests and tutorials on a number of subjects; the Wisconsin Newspapers Digital Research Site, where patrons can access daily and weekly newspaper archives from around the state; and Wisconsin’s Digital Library, commonly referred to as Overdrive, where patrons can download electronic books, audiobooks, and movies. All of these resources can be accessed in person or online. Libraries of all types are evolving to meet the needs of the communities they serve. At the Brodhead Memorial Public Library, we are transforming by bringing new materials, programs, and technologies to our library. In May, the library will offer patrons an opportunity to digitize old photographs using new, easy-to-use technology. We are also working on plans to bring more programming for adults and children to the library. Finally, the library helps transform the com-

munity by providing educational and recreational materials as well as exposure and training on new technology. “Service to the community has always been the focus of the library,” said Angela Noel, Library Director, “Libraries level the playing field for people of any age who are seeking the information and access to technologies that will improve their quality of life.” Libraries are many things to many people. They work with elected officials, small business owners, students and the public at large to discover and address the needs of their communities. Whether through offering e-books and technology classes, materials for English-language learners, programs for job seekers or offering a safe haven in times of crisis, libraries and librarians listen to the community they serve, and they respond. Brodhead Memorial Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by offering patrons a fun and relaxing way to connect with the library and themselves, a bookmark coloring contest! Visit the library during National Library Week, grab a bookmark and supplies, and color yourself calm. When you are finished, display your creativity and enter to win a coloring book. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. For more information, visit Brodhead Memorial Public Library at 1207 25th Street, call 608-897-4070, or see the library’s website at brodheadlibrary.org.

MORE REASONS TO EAT BLUEBERRIES

There has been much research into the health benefits of blueberries. Blueberries are low in calories, high in fiber and rich in antioxidants and nutrients. Studies suggest they may help promote cardiovascular health by improving blood flow, as well as contribute to brain health and improve memory and cognition. Blueberries may also improve insulin sensitivity. Research also suggests that they may help fight cancer. Like cranberries, they may stop bacterial growth in the bladder to help prevent urinary tract infections. Their phytonutrients may protect the retina from sunlight damage.

advocacy. One thing he is concerned about is the cost of education, and he advocates for ways to improve this. He tries to put MARK POCAN new ideas forward and make things better. This is Rep. Pocan’s second term in congress, but his first time serving during a presidential election year. He said that the behavior of some of the candidates saddens him. He is hopeful that it will become more respectful in the general election cycle once the parties have had their conventions and chosen their candidates. Pocan took many questions from the students. One question he was asked was whether he aspired to a higher office. He said the feels you should not look ahead but do what you want to do well and focus on that. He also said that what he feels is important are the things people are talking about around the kitchen table. Another student asked him about his favorite part of his job. Pocan said that helping the people in his district navigate through issues was his favorite part. He added that if anyone ever needs help, they should reach out to his office. Lastly, he encouraged all of the students who were old enough to vote in the elections.

ORFORDVILLE — Mark Pocan, Representative from the Wisconsin Second Congressional district, visited Camden Mueller’s civics class on Monday, April 4. Juniors and seniors who wished to also attended. Pocan told students about his district, which is one of eight congressional districts in Wisconsin. His district is broken into thirds. One-third is made up of residents of Madison. Another third is made up of residents in the rest of Dane County. The remaining counties of Green, Lafayette, and Sauk, along with portions of Rock and Richland, make up the final third. The committees Pocan serves on are the Budget Committee and the Education and Workforce Committee. He explained that the Budget Committee is one of three committees that are involved in the budget process. The other two are the Ways and Means Committee and the Appropriations Committee. He explained the Education and Workforce Committee covers pre-Kindergarten through twelfth-grade, as well as higher education. It also covers minimum wage, job training, and other items related to the workforce. Pocan explained that there are three aspects to his job. First, he works in Washington on an average of three weeks a month. There, he works on passing bills, making amendments and serving on the committees. The second aspect of his job is helping the people in the district. He can help navigate problems his constituents may be having with the VA, the IRS and other issues. He said he is happy that he has had a lot of success in this area. One example he gave was helping a Korean War veteran get the medals he had coming to him. The third part of Pocan’s job is

Statewide tornado drill to happen tomorrow MONROE — Tanna McKeon, Green County Emergency Management Director, announced that April 11 through 15 is Wisconsin’s Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week. Green County Emergency Management, Wisconsin Emergency Management, the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) have once again teamed up to sponsor the state-

wide tornado drill scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, April 14. A mock tornado watch and warning will be issued. The mock tornado watch will be issued at 1 p.m. A mock tornado warning will then be issued statewide at 1:45 p.m. In addition, for the first time, a mock tornado warning will also be issued at 6:55 p.m. Most tornado touchdowns occur between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., so this second tornado

drill was added to allow families and businesses the chance to test their tornado and severe weather plans. The tornado drill will take place even if the sky is cloudy, dark, or rainy. If actual severe storms are expected in the state on tomorrow, the tornado drills will be postponed until Friday, April 15 with the same times. If severe storms are possible Friday, the drills will be cancelled. Some communities in our

area may be blowing their tornado sirens during the mock warnings. Many radio and TV stations across the state also issue the test tornado warnings. Mock alerts will be issued on NOAA Weather Radios, and many radio and TV stations across the state also issue the mock alerts. The statewide tornado drill is a great opportunity for schools, businesses and families to test their emergency plans about what to do and where to go

when severe weather strikes. During Tornado Awareness Week, Green County Emergency Management will be giving away several weather radios and a first aid kit. Go to their website; www.greencountyem.com and their Facebook page for more information. GCEM’s website provides great information and resources to help you with emergency preparedness plans. Bobby Cassell, manager of the Green County Habitat for Humanity, displays some of the retail store’s inventory.

Habitat for Humanity donation drive a success MONROE — Habitat for Humanity of Green County is very grateful for the generous response to its recent 1st annual Spring Donation drive. Residents of Green County donated kitchen items, household appliances, tools, tables, chairs, and gardening equipment. Shelving, vanities and toilets were among the most common donation. There were many small donations such as light fixtures and small hand tools. Residents who had large

items to donate had these items picked up without a charge by a Habitat for Humanity truck. Habitat for Humanity is urging Green County residents to not only continue their generous donations, but to also purchase items from the store. With the increase in donated inventory, there are many items customers can choose from for their own use. Profit generated from sales at Habitat stores enable Habitat for Humanity to perform various projects for the area.

These projects have helped many Green County residents receive help with home repairs, additions, and construction. Habitat for Humanity of Green County’s Resale Store is located at 1001 30th street in Monroe. The phone number is 608 329-4024, and the email is Store@greencountyhabitat. com. The store is open on Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Season looks bright for Albany baseball ALBANY — The 2016 baseball season is underway, and the Comets are hoping experience can help them compete in a very good Six Rivers East Conference. Practice began March 21, which meant players had to start their spring break a little later than the other students. The Comets will have a roster of 15 players to start the 2016 season, seven of which have had significant varsity experience over the last few years. Those seven will be critical in the success the Comets see on the field this spring and will be big in helping lead the younger players as they develop. The pitching staff will be led by junior Brock Gilkes. Gilkes was the Comet’s best statistical pitcher last year and has seen varsity innings the last two seasons. He throws a lot of strikes and has the ability to keep the Comets in every game he throws. Senior Tyler Dahl will look to help Gilkes by taking some innings on the mound, as well. Dahl throws hard and will need to command the strike zone. If he does that, he will be a tough pitcher to face. Junior Travis Oliver and freshman Corbin Kelley will also be looking at getting some varsity innings. Senior Cole Trapp will return to the Comets’ lineup after taking a year away from baseball.

He will be the team’s primary catcher and has already shown that his arm is good enough to deter a lot of baserunners. He brings leadership and excitement to the team, some things that the team missed when he was gone last year. The infield will be led by shortstop Tyler Dahl. Like Trapp, Dahl took a year away from baseball last year, but he brings with him a ton of talent and experience at shortstop. Dahl was an All-Conference player at shortstop his sophomore year and has already showcased a great arm and consistent play at the position in practice. Brock Gilkes will look to keep his 3rd base job when he is not pitching, but Corbin Kelley should see some time there when Brock is throwing. Junior Drew Kennedy returns after starting almost every game at 1st base last year. Kennedy is a big target and reliable fielder at 1st. Second base will look to some young players in freshman Josh Dahl and sophomore Hunter Brewer. Both should have chances to make impacts this year. Other infielders who will develop this year and fight for a spot are junior Kyle Hulbert at 1st base and freshman Sammie Boeck at 2nd base. The outfield will return all three starters from last year. Juniors Trevor Muller and Tra-

vis Oliver will man left field and center field respectively. Both have great baseball instincts and will make it hard for opposing players to find places to put balls they can’t catch. In right field, senior Clay Spooner will improve on his defensive skills and become a more consistent right fielder. Spooner will also spend some time as the team’s designated hitter. Young players learning from these guys who will develop and look to find spots are juniors Zach Schliem and Jordin Stodola. Sophomore Sam Zach will also develop and compete for an outfield role. The Comets will play their home games at the Village Park in Albany. Concessions are available at each game, and most games will start at 5:00 p.m., unless otherwise noted in the Courtesy photo schedule. Please come out to The team huddles in a sign of solidarity and preparedness for the park to watch some Comet the upcoming games. Baseball this spring. MONROE — The Natural Resources Convention Service and the Green County Land and Water Conservation Department are organizing a field day to answer questions regarding cover crops and soil health. Randy Kesler, a local farmer, is struggling with what to do about his field, which appears to be covered in cover crop residue. He says that he’s “not sure what they’re going to do with that field to plant it”. He’s worried that the residue will tangle up in his row cleaners on the corn planter, so he might do some tillage. This is one topic that will be discussed at the spring cover crop field day next Tuesday, April 19. Randy and Chad Kesler are hosting the morning session of the cover crop field day at their farm at N3256 County SS, east of Monroe from 10 until 11:30 a.m. They planted oats, radish, crimson clover, berseem clover, and Austrian Winter Peas last August as a cover crop after

winter wheat. They selected the mix for the best chances it would winterkill and not have any added management this spring. The afternoon session, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., will be at the Ron and Ryan Syse Farm located east of Blanchardville. The site is located at W9248 County H. The variety of cover crops planted last August include annual ryegrass, daikon radish, oilseed radish, crimson clover, spring peas, hairy vetch, purple top turnips, spring peas, sun hemp, pearl millet, and winter peas. The spring cover crop field day is a great chance for farmers to revisit a site if they attended a fall field day to compare the difference of plant material left after winter. “The soil surface management is the key to soil health. Cover crops provide many benefits for soil health,” says Jason Thomas, District Conservationist with the Green County Natural Resources Conservation Service.
