Albany School Board meets and fish identification on this eight-day trip, which would be excellent for students’ college applications and scholarship applications. The cost estimate of the trip would be $3001, and it would be limited to 20 participants. The date would tentatively be June 10, 2017. A representative from the Albany baseball teams presented Albany High School Baseball Future Projections. He said that he would like for the Albany baseball team to try to survive in 2017, but that they need to decide by Wednesday, June 1 whether they think they will have enough players. For the 2017 projected roster, they have 12 projected players. This leaves them at risk of forfeiting games due to illness and eligibility issues. If they were instead to join Evansville, they would add to 30 kids there. They could also join Monticello. A parent suggested that the baseball team join Evansville, where they could get the needed development of young players. A freshman, instead of being on varsity, would play for a number

of years on lower teams. Also, they would have the possibility of playing on a summer league team and a better chance of receiving a college scholarship. Connie Gregorson and Sue Tinker, Elementary Special Needs Teacher, presented PBIS teams, Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. They think these have been very effective. In the discipline process, there are three overreaching themes: to create a place that is safe for students, to create a place where everyone can function together, and teaching. Gregorson said, “Kids need to know what expectations are. The staff looks for the least restrictive environment for the children. We can teach compassion.” A school parent thought the discipline in the classroom was going beautifully, but thought that things had repeatedly gotten violent in the halls. Board members were also concerned about outside and the cafeteria. Sherri Cleasby suggested the possibility of hiring a disciplinarian who could monitor hallways.

Parkview Athletic Booster Club to add equipment to Fitness Center

ORFORDVILLE — The Parkview Athletic Booster Club has formed a committee (Fitness Center Committee) to raise money to add new equipment to the Fitness Center at the Parkview JR/SR high. The group has recognized that the new facility is wonderful, but it needs more equipment. The group has met with members of the community, coaches, school staff, and students and devised a three-step plan for replacing the current fitness center equipment. The goals are to: provide and maintain safe and clean equipment; meet the physical needs our athletes require to perform at their highest level; meet the community’s need for a full fitness center; increase district use of facilities; and raise $50,000. The committee has raised approximately $15,000 in donations since it formed. The Parkview Athletic Booster Club donated $4,500, which was used to purchase adjustable weight benchers that have already been

placed in the weight room. Another set of equipment should be arriving soon. A core training group for students has been formed. It meets on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8 and Fridays from 5:30 p.m. to 7. Coaches from both youth sports and school sports have encouraged their athletes to participate and make fitness a lifestyle, not just something they do when their season starts. The group hopes this new program will change the way our student athletes look at physical fitness and reap the rewards of personal growth as an athlete and a student. All Parkview students are invited to attend these free workouts. This class is run by Ami Jo Schumann and Ryan Walker. The group is also offering a Brick Dedication, which allows donors to have a brick placed on the wall outside of the fitness center to commemorate a loved one, a family name, a business, a favorite athlete or inspiration-

A case for kindness By Amy Giza, Ed.S., M.S.E. School Psychologist

ORFORDVILLE — Bullying has been a huge topic lately. Experts and laypeople alike debate on the best way of handling and preventing these repeated, targeted acts of cruelty toward people with less power (in terms of social standing, athletic ability, academic skills, etc.). A big push has been made for having a zero-tolerance policy. This focuses on the consequences given after an incident has occurred. Others push for more preventative measures by introducing students to the idea that they should stand up to bullies. When I think about behavior change, I think about what behaviors we can teach to help replace the unwanted behavior. If you’ve ever quit smoking, think about what you taught yourself to do with your hands instead of picking up a cigarette. What is the opposite of bullying? What could a person do where it’s impossible to bully others at the same time? Answer? Practice kindness. Kindness - treating others in a friendly, generous, and considerate way - is an important part of what makes us human. It is needed for building bonds and working together with others. Not only that, but studies indicate it also

contributes to improved health, less stress, greater self-esteem, less depression, better concentration, and improved performance in school. When we’re kind to others, the brain releases endorphins, which activate feelings of happiness and connection. These feelings not only encourage the giver of kindness to continue being kind, but they also encourage the receiver to experience these feelings, as well. Kindness is the gift that keeps on giving; the more we give, the more we receive, the more we give. It is, after all, the golden rule: Treat others the way that you want to be treated. When we experience the warm feelings kindness provides, the brain also releases extra serotonin. This chemical gives us a boost in or ability to sustain attention, remember information, and learn new things quicker and easier. When this becomes a habit, schoolwork actually becomes a little simpler. When we’re feeling happy, confident, and encouraged to spread kindness to others, there is less of an impulse to act in a way that would be harmful to others. There is less of a need to bully. Consider the student who

al words. The bricks vary in size depending on the dedication level, and all allow for three lines of text. The Fitness Center Committee is also selling pulled pork sandwiches at all concession stands on Saturday, April 23. The Albright Invitational track meet starts at 10:30, the varsity softball invitational starts at 9 a.m., and the varsity baseball doubleheader vs. Belleville starts at 11. The Orfordville Youth Wrestling group is donating the pulled pork, which can be purchased as either a sandwich for $3 or a meal deal for $5. The Parkview Fitness Center is available not only to students, but area residents, as well. Memberships run from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31 each year with different cost depending on the membership. A summer membership is also available to district residents for $45 for June through August. A complete list of fees is available on the Parkview School District website under JR/SR High School, Athletics, Fitness Center.

CUT DIABETES RISK

A diet that includes berries, red grapes, parsley, thyme, celery, tea and even chocolate and wine in moderation may be associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, according to new research. These foods contain compounds called flavonoids. Investigators found that eating high levels of flavones and anthocyanins (certain subgroups of flavonoids) was linked with lower levels of inflammation, lower insulin resistance and better blood sugar control. Experts say, while the results are exciting, to keep in mind that the study found an association, not a cause-and-effect relationship.

BRODHEAD — Is your yard looking bleak? Would you like to add a pop of color near the bushes? Brodhead High School’s horticulture and FFA department have you covered. Brodhead High School students are selling their own grown plants at an annual plant sale. The sale will be held at Brodhead High School on Monday, May 2 through Saturday, May 7. Sale hours are 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Plants available for sale include geraniums, petunias, marigolds, impatiens, spike plants, vinca vines, creeping jenny, and begonias. Funds raised from the sale will be used

toward plants and landscaping for the school agriculture department. The greenhouse where the plants are raised was established in 2003 with the help of Brodhead FFA Alumni members. These same members pay to heat the greenhouse. Agriculture students and FFA members spend the entire year raising and studying the plants as part of their curriculum. Not only are you bringing home a beautiful plant by participating in the plant sale, but you are contributing to a student’s agriculture education. “My favorite part of the class is getting to watch the plants grow,” Lexi Picard, senior, said of her experience in Becky Wellnitz’s horticulture classroom. “I really enjoy connecting with nature.”

Brodhead Community Gardens holds sign-up BRODHEAD — The Brodhead Community Gardens are ready for the new growing season. Those who have rented garden plots in the past must sign up by Sunday, May 1 to hold their place for the coming year. New gardeners are welcomed to join. You may sign up in person on Sunday, May 1 from 4 p.m. to 6 at the Community Gardens. Plots will cost $15 each, and tilling is scheduled for the first week of May. Please do not plant anything until tilling is complete. A new fence has been installed, intersecting several existing garden plots. Several gardeners will need to move to new plots. This will only affect the plots on the south side of the middle garden. There are empty spaces available for new and existing gardeners.

For more information, please contact Tiff Bates at 897-4728. The Brodhead Community Gardens are located on an acre of land behind Gasser True Value Hardware. Community Residents may use the land to grow what they wish. The spaces are approximately 20 feet by 25 feet or roughly 500 square feet. Each family may reserve up to four sections and may use the same plot year after year. Participants are asked to use limited amounts of fertilizer, use organic herbicides and insecticides, and clean up the space by Oct. 15. All vegetables are property of the grower. The gardens will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the summer months for planting, weeding, and harvesting. Water will be available on site.

s temperatures being to rise, there is a feeling in the atmosphere that drives us outdoors, delivers us from our winter hibernation doldrums and into planning mode. Plants are sprouting, birds are singing, and daylight lasts longer, which means it is an excellent time to get ready for the planting season. If you are looking for something rewarding and healthy to do this spring, I would recommend planting a garden. How well will your garden grow? GARDENING TIPS Research gardening Plan ahead and look for garden information on the internet, in books, or in magazines. a tremendous amount of work. Container gardens (using pots or raised beds) can be enough. Work your way up. Find the perfect spot Decide what environment plants like to grow in. Do they need full sun, shade or a mix of both? How is the soil? Is there plenty of water? Do you have enough space? If you need more space, consider renting a garden plot. The Rock County Community Garden offers rental plots. They cost $35 for one plot and $60 for two plots. Garden plots are approximately 20’x 25’. Green County Master Gardeners to present on climate change MONROE — The Green County Master Gardeners will be holding their monthly meeting on Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m. at the Green County Justice Center’s multi-purpose rooms. Meetings usually include speakers or tours for learning and are open to the public to attend. Due to last month’s meeting being cancelled, our speaker this month will be Mary Nelson, one of our own Green County Master Gardeners, who will be speaking on “Our Changing Weather and Climate in the Great Lakes Region.” Nelson will discuss the societal impacts of these changes and what actions can be taken to slow the rate of future climate change. She was previously involved with the MATC Clinical Technician Program and now devotes a great deal of her time to plant gardening and improvements. The Green County Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association was formed in Green County in 2004 to provide Master Gardeners with opportunities for professional development and community service. This past year, members of the association volunteered 185 hours of community education and 1856 hours in community service projects in Green County.

Master Gardener Volunteers also assist the UW-Extension Office in responding to horticulture questions and offer information through a column published in local newspapers. The Green County Master Gardeners Association meets on the fourth Thursday of the month from February through October. Association officers for 2016 will include Mary Jackson, President; Marilyn Sandin-Ross, Vice President; Kristi Leonard, Secretary; and Lynn Lokken as Treasurer. Anyone interested in horticulture and gardening is welcomed to join the association. You do not have to be a Master Gardener to be a member. For more information on the UW-Extension Master Gardener program, contact Mark Mayer, Agriculture Agent, at 608-328-9440.

Ash Borer continues moving in By Siara Schwartzlow Editor

BRODHEAD — Spring cleaning goes beyond organizing closets and pricing items for a rummage sale. When the snow melts and flowers begin to bloom again, it’s time note the condition of the trees around your home. Over the past several years, people have become more aware of the Ash Borer, a beetle that feeds on Ash trees. Right now, there are at least 12 infected trees in Brodhead. Richard Vogel of Brodhead’s Public Works Department said, “They won’t die this year, but next year and maybe the year after, they’ll die.” One way to tell whether a tree has been infected is to note its color. White spots may indicate an infestation. Also, woodpeckers may spend more time around an infected tree because they eat Ash Borer larvae. Once an infected tree dies, it becomes more difficult to remove. “A dead Ash tree that’s been infected is a little more dangerous,” Vogel said. Because infected trees are so brittle, there is an increased danger of limbs falling while the tree is being removed. Also, cleanup becomes much more difficult. “It’s more dangerous to take down a tree that’s dead than to be proactive,” Vogel added. If you believe you may have an Ash tree that has been infected, you have several options. If the tree is close to the street, you may call your local Public Works Department. They can determine

whether the tree is a private tree or a city tree. If it is determined that the tree is private and is not

the responsibility of the city, you should contact a wellinsured tree removal service promptly.

If you don’t have a green thumb, find someone who does By Siara Schwartzlow Editor

BRODHEAD — Gardening doesn’t come as a second nature to everyone. It’s important to consult an expert before you get started this spring. Linda Ahrens of Ahrens’ Acres has thirty years of experience in planting and gardening. Through the time she has spent working with gardeners, she has developed a list of advice. One of the most common questions Ahrens receives is whether it is safe to plant as soon as the weather warms up. “A lot of people think they can plant once the weather is nice,” Ahrens said. Many people planted potatoes on or near Good Friday when the weather was a little warmer. This is generally safe, but the potatoes may not make it because there hasn’t been much sun.

“Without sun, they’re not going to grow,” Ahrens said. “They’re just going to sit there, and when they just sit there, they rot.” Right now, the weather is unpredictable, and while it may be warm this week, it may cool down in the near future. “Some plants can take the colder weather,” Ahrens said, “but we never know what the weather is going to do.” That’s why she recommends waiting until midMay to plant, especially delicate plants like tomatoes and peppers. Impatiens are especially fragile. “They have a very watery stem, so they will freeze easily,” Ahrens said. While some plants and vegetables are more resilient, like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi, and hostas, it’s a good idea to note a pattern in the weather

before planting. Plants generally need at least 45- to 50-degree low temperatures to thrive. Now or very soon, gardeners may begin planting perennials. And alreadyestablished strawberry plants that are covered may soon be uncovered. Though gardening may seem to require a lot of monitoring and background knowledge, beginners shouldn’t shy away from it. “Start small,” Ahrens said. “Don’t make it a job.” Trends in gardening are beginning to cater to the beginner, as well. Small gardens are becoming very popular. Some people even confine their growing to pots. “The new thing is to use raised beds,” Ahrens said. “Start with a couple of tomato plants. Then next year, make another or make it a little bigger. Just don’t ever over do it.”

Siara Schwartzlow photo

Now is the time to transplant hostas

Hostas are just beginning to come up. Now, when the plants stand just a couple of inches tall, is the time to transplant. As one of the most resilient plants, hostas are the perfect choice for beginning gardeners.

• KINDNESS

Continued from page 5 wants attention and support from her friends, but the way that she gets these things is to lead the charge against someone less popular or less athletic. She gets what she is looking for by bullying, but this only shifts the negative feelings to someone else. We could help the student find new ways of gaining attention and support without having to share the hurt. But how do we teach our kids kindness?

We can start with compassion and empathy. A good place to begin is modeling these qualities in our own actions. We show kids how to be patient, even when we’re not feeling particularly calm ourselves. We encourage using problem solving strategies to handle difficult situations. This will help kids slow down and think about effective and kind ways of responding instead of simply reacting out of anger. Certainly a firm system should be in place to deal with bullying situations when they occur, but teaching kindness may be a proactive way to reduce such

incidents. This week, make an extra effort to try some random acts of kindness. Encourage your family to try it, too. You may find that taking just a few minutes to do something kind for someone else, even a stranger, may lead to a lot of good in your own life. And maybe the people your kind acts reach will be inspired to be kind to others. Sharing this experience with our families will only help this chain reaction grow. Maybe together, we can make a world that has less room for bullying.

Beckman Mill ready for 2016 season BELOIT — Opening day is set for Saturday, May 7 from noon to 4 p.m. at Beckman Mill County Park, located west of Beloit. Those who come to opening day at the Beckman Mill can taste chili and homemade corn muffins made from corn ground right at the grist mill. The food will be served in the pavilion area of the park. Corn grinding demonstrations will occur at the historic Beckman Mill, and the cooperage/museum will be open for tours. Coopers were carpenters who constructed wooden barrels and other types of wooden containers. The Goodhue family originally used the building as a cooperage in the 1840s for making barrels to contain whiskey, flour and meat. Gary Hess, author of Roll

Out the Barrels, will be in the cooperage with a display and books to sign and sell. Also in the cooperage/museum is a display of items from early one-room school houses and more from bygone days. Dick and Val Dunagan will sing and play their dulcimers. The mill began extensive renovations in 1990 with the formation of the Friends of Beckman Mill. The group continues its preservation efforts, which have been accomplished by volunteers and their expertise in building, construction, and engineering. The site has been listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Also located in the park is the Griinke Creamery and Gift Shop building, which will be open to the public. A raffle will be held on Sept.

11th at 4 p.m. The prizes include a beautiful quilt made by The Sew & Sews and a study group with Rock Valley Quilters Guild for first place; a prize a basket of Beckman Mill items ($75 value) for second place; a one-year family membership in a 25th anniversary cup for third place; and $25 cash for fourth place. Mill tours are offered May through October from 1 to 4 p.m., or tours can be arranged by appointment. Other special events also are scheduled such as: Ice Cream Social and Artists at their crafts on Sunday, July 17 and Heritage Sunday, Sept. 11. Beckman Mill County Park is located six miles west of Beloit at 11600 S. County Road H. For more information, call 608-751-1551 or email: info@beckmanmill.org

Recycling options available for used agriculture plastic MONROE — Area farmers now have the opportunity to dispose of their used plastic film from wrapped bales, bunker covers and silo bags every Wednesday at the Green County Landfill. The landfill is located between Monroe and Brodhead and is accepting used agriculture plastic film from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. The agriculture plastic recycling program is free and open to all farmers from surrounding counties to dispose of their used plastic. Green County has successfully collected and recycled over 125 tons of used plastic over the past two years; however, that represents only a small amount of the estimated 500 tons of agriculture plastics for silo bags, bunker cover and bales wraps that are sold annually in the area. Green County bales the used plastic into one-ton bales, and a recycling vendor then provides the trucking to their plant in Arkansas, where it is recycled

into trash can liners. Burning used plastic is illegal, and farmers can be fined for this practice. Burning used agriculture plastic is not only illegal, but it also releases dioxins into the environment that are hazardous to both humans and animals. The Green County recycling program provides area farmers with a free and legal method for disposing of their plastic and also frees up expensive space in our landfills. While the local plastic collection will continue on Wednesdays, many area dairy and livestock farmers may have an even more attractive option for recycling their plastic starting later this spring. Revolution Plastics, the recycling vendor the county is working with, will be expanding their offer of providing free dumpsters and on-farm pick up to several hundred more area farms. UW-Extension and the Green County Landfill recently con-

ducted a pilot program with Revolution Plastics in which 88 area farms received free dumpsters and on-farm pick up since last summer. Due to the success of the pilot program, the company now plans to offer this program to several hundred more area farmers in 2016. Green County will serve as the hub for the rollout of this new program with farmers within a 70-mile radius of Green County being given first chance to participate. After farmers in the immediate area are served, they will then expand out to a larger geographical area. Dairy and livestock farmers interested in enrolling in the program that provides free use of a dumpster and on-farm pick up can register to get on a waiting list by going to the Revolution Plastics web site at: http://www. revolutionplastics.com/. Only #4 plastic from silo bags, bunker covers, bale wraps from

Motor vehicle crash At 8:20 p.m., Green County, Lafayette County Deputies, Argyle Fire, and EMS responded to a truck versus farm tractor crash in the West 9500 block of County Highway C in the Town of Adams. A pickup driven by a minor was traveling eastbound on C when the driver became distracted, looked down, and collided with a farm tractor pulling a manure wagon. The minor was not wearing a seatbelt, and his airbag deployed. He received injuries and was transported to the Monroe Clinic ER by the Argyle EMS. The pickup he was driving received very severe damage and was towed from the scene. The farm tractor was driven by Alan J. Berg, 53, of Argyle. The tractor was not damaged, and Berg was uninjured. The manure spreader received minor damage and was driven from the scene by the operator. Wednesday, April 13 Motor vehicle crash At 11:59 a.m., deputies along with Browntown Fire, South Wayne Fire, and Green County EMS responded to the West 8900

block of State Highway 11 in the Town of Cadiz for a motor vehicle crash with injuries. An investigation revealed that Douglas L. Larson was wearing his seatbelt, and the airbags did not deploy. Larson was transported by EMS to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. farms, greenhouse covers, and drip tape from the greenhouse industry are accepted through this collection. Plastic twine, mesh bale wraps, plastic jugs and all other types of plastic containers cannot be recycled through this program and will not be accepted. While the newer technology allows for these plastics to be recycled, the plastic still needs to be relatively clean, meaning it cannot contain large amounts of mud, manure, gravel, or silage. Because it is not practical to remove all the dirt from the used plastic, it cannot be recycled if it

is not relatively clean. Farmers are asked at a minimum to shake any excess mud, gravel, dirt and feed off the plastic before storing it for recycling. It is also recommended that the bottom portion of silo bags be landfilled instead of being recycled. For more information about the Green County Ag Plastic Collection program, go to the Green County UW-Extension web page at: http://green.uwex.edu/, or contact Mark Mayer, Green County UW-Extension Agriculture Agent at 608-328-9440 or mark.mayer@ces.uwex.edu.
