Green County hosts Area Animal Science Day The 2016 Southern Wisconsin 4-H Area Animal Science Day was hosted by Green County on Friday, July 1. Area Animal Science Day ishosted by three counties in the state of Wisconsin every summer. It gives 4-H and FFA members an opportunity to expand their communication and decision-making skills through judging and great experiences. Other purposes of the event include increasing the availability of educational opportunities in the 4-H Animal Science Projects and furthering youth’s knowledge of animals through breeding, market evaluation, and management information. This year’s Green County event included a dairy cattle showmanship contest, evaluation of dairy cattle in both the junior and senior division, and livestock evaluation for both juniors and seniors. The livestock evaluation included beef cattle, goats, sheep, and swine. For the evaluation contest, 4-H and FFA judges used their knowledge to place the four animals in each class based on breeding or market characteristics. In the senior division, the students had to give reasons
as to why they placed a specific class to a state specialist. This helps the students improve their confidence, defend their reasoning, and work on their decision-making abilities. For the junior judges, there was an educational program and group reasoning justifications. Green County had a total of 17 4-H members registered in the contest. Reece Rufer took 1st Place Individual in the Senior Livestock Judging Contest. Marissa Vosberg took 1st Place Individual in the Junior Dairy Judging Contest. Vosberg led the Junior Dairy Judging Team to a second-place finish with teammates Natalie Roe, Nicholas Roe, and Emma Hendrickson. The The Senior Dairy Judging team consists of Coach Kelsi Mayer, Clayton Mahlkuch, Cole Mahlkuch, Brian team will be moving on to the state McCullough, Ryan Smith, and Coach Mike Marean. competition. For our Senior Dairy Judging Team, Ryan Smith had 1st Place for Reasons. Our Senior Dairy Judging Team took 4th Place overall, which included Ryan Smith, Cole Mahlkuch, Brian McCullough, and Clayton Mahlkuch. Thank you to all of the producers, volunteers, and steering committee members forthe hard work in making this event a huge success!
Junior Dairy Judging participants include Natalie Roe, Averey Marean, Emma Hendrickson, and Nicholas Roe, front row, and Coach Aaron Breunig, Marissa Vosberg, and Devin Gilson, back row.

Wisconsin author to hold book signing in Monroe Join Kris Leonhardt and the Green County Historical Society at the society’s museum for a book signing on Saturday, July 30 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30. Leonhardt will sign copies of her book, Showstopper – The Adler Family and the Dawn of the Movie Industry. She will also answer questions and have a small display on hand. In Showstopper – The Adler Family and the Dawn of the Movie Industry, Leonhardt takes readers back through time, before production companies fought for box office sales, before movie theater marquees beaconed people to their doors,
Kris Leonhardt
and before actors made millions. The Adler family was a part of show business long before Hollywood became the mega center
of movie production. While fate positioned J.P. Adler to become a successful showman, it was vision and persistence that helped him thrive. While building one of Wisconsin’s largest independent theater chains, J.P. struggles with the heavy hand of the production companies along with a multitude of obstacles. Growing up in a life of privilege, J.P.’s daughters, Anne and Bette, find success outside the theater; however, the family business would remain a permanent fixture in their lives. Copies of Leonhardt’s book are available on Amazon or at the museum.

Members of New Horizons 4-H Club met Sunday, May 15. The thought for the day was “Find happiness in everything you do.” Maylee Brauer led the flag salute. Justin Moore led the club pledge. Roll call was answered by naming a flower. Updates were given on pizza sales and events members have attended. The educational moment was spent on how to fill out fair entries. Plans were made for a fair sign, and May birthdays were recognized. Cloverbuds Chance and Roxane Ace, Jaydon Brauer, and Shannon Day gave a safety talk. Other talks were given for archery, arts and crafts, drawing and painting, and foods. Those who gave talks were Connor, Maylee, and Royce Brauer, Jaena LeGault, and Justin. Members met Sunday, June 18. The thought for the day was “A home is a house with a heart inside.” Roll call was answered by naming a word that rhymes with June. Everyone had a different word. That was cool!
Connor Brauer led the flag salute. Cloverbuds led the club pledge. We decided to do a community service project for veterans. The educational moment was how to remove permanent marker. June birthdays were recognized. We started on plans for next year. Talks and demonstrations were given. Everyone told what they would like to conserve and why. The most unusual answer given was memories because we could take them out and enjoy them over and over. Other talks given were horse, intergenerational, photography, and exploring your environment. Royce Brauer told us about going to Adventure Camp. We went outside and enjoyed fuzzy chickens and a rabbit. Following the meeting, members went shopping for a gift for new arrival, Daegan Brauer. Fair is coming! The new 4-H year begins Thursday, September 1. That is the time to join 4-H. Get in on the fun! To join New Horizons 4-H, call Paul at 608-9345377.

Drinking low-calorie cranberry juice may modestly reduce blood pressure. Participants in a recent study were given either 8 ounces of low-calorie cranberry juice twice a day or a placebo drink. After 2 months, the cranberry juice group showed a 3-point drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Cranberries, like most berries, are rich in flavonoids, which may help relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. It’s important to note the use of low-calorie juice since regular cranberry juice may have high levels of added sugar, which could negate the beneficial effect.

Dinah is a three-year-old white, orange, and gray domestic shorthair cat. She likes to play shy when she meets new people, hiding in her kitty condo, observing the world from the shadows. Leslie Reynolds CH., in conjunction with the non-profit organization Health Awareness Clinics, will be conducting two hypnosis seminars next month. Both are free and open to the public, though a five-dollar donation will be appreciated. The first seminar will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3 at the Super 8 hotel in Monroe. The second seminar will be held on Thursday, August 4 at Fibs restaurant north in Brodhead at 7 p.m. Anyone 16 and over is welcomed to attend. There is no pre-registration, but please arrive 20 minutes early to sign in. According to the Surgeon General, Dr. Satcher, and the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 400,000 Americans die every year from illnesses directly caused or worsened by being overweight. Approximately 65% of all adults are overweight or obese, as are nearly 33% of our children. These rates have steadily risen over the past decade and continue to rise. According to a recent report from CNN, this weight problem is not confined to just the United States; other countries are reporting a significant increase in their population’s weight, as well. According to the USA Today (October 4, 2003) scientists are reporting how obesity leads to shorter life spans. Overweight people who are non-smokers lose 3 years of their lives, obese people who are non-smokers lose 7 years of their lives, and obese people who are smokers lose 13.5 years of their lives. Both the Surgeon General and the Centers for Disease Control
agree that smoking is blamed for 435,000 deaths a year. That’s over 800,000 American’s who die every year from preventable deaths. The Washington Post published a report in June of 2004 explaining that smoking cuts your life span by 10 years. The good news is that it is possible for many to get those years back by stopping smoking and/or losing weight. Hypnosis has been recognized by the American Medical Association since 1958. In fact, the AMA now recommends and endorses hypnosis. Leslie Reynolds, C.H. one of America’s leading hypnotherapists said, “Aside from being completely safe, hypnosis is the easiest and most effective way to stop smoking and lose weight. Hypnosis is a mental process, not a physical process. Don’t look for something you can feel or touch. It’s very similar to a meditative state. A hypnotist goes from talking to a subject’s conscious mind, which makes up approximately 12% of his/her brain, to talking to his or her subconscious mind, which makes up the remaining 88%. This process is also called ‘bypassing critical faculty.’ Breathing, blinking your heart beating is all covered by your autonomic system, your subconscious mind. That’s the main reason hypnosis has such an incredibly high rate. Hypnosis works with your subconscious mind. By doing this, it takes will power out of the equation.” For more information on hypnosis and hypnotherapy, please visit HealthAwarenssClinics.org.

Green Cares releases annual report Green Cares Food Pantry opened in August 2009 to create increased availability to emergency food sources for the growing population of low income families in Green County. Green Cares, the largest food pantry in Green County, is located approximately one mile west of Monticello. Green Cares is open more frequently than the other pantries in the county, making it more accessible to the growing population in need of food. Clients are asked to schedule appointments during regular business hours in order to receive pantry services; however, walk-ins are not turned away. Green Cares is open on Tuesday evenings from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with expanded Tuesday hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month, Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon, and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will open for emergencies. All Green County families under 185% of poverty are able to come to the pantry once every month to receive food. The amount of food the client receives is based on family size. Food that is provided within the monthly allocations includes cereal, fruits, vegetables, rice, potatoes, soups, juice, shelf milk, pasta, spaghetti sauce, and bread. Frozen foods include hamburger, chicken, pork, luncheon meat, and venison. Personal hygiene items are included when available, such as shampoo, soap, toilet paper, dish soap, laundry detergent, and diapers. Pantry usage continues to grow, both in terms of unduplicated individuals and families, and in number of trips to the pantry each year. In 2013, Green Cares assisted 383 unduplicated families comprised of 1,180 unduplicated individuals. In 2014, the number of unduplicated families increased to 467, and the unduplicated individuals rose to 1,461. In 2015, the unduplicated families rose slightly to 483 and the individual number increased to 1,526. Families also increased their trips to the pantry; during 2014, 33% of families used the pantry 8 or more times during the year. During 2015, that increased to 37%. Green Cares provided over 158,500 pounds of food to the families during 2013. During 2014, Green Cares provided nearly 220,000 pounds to our families, and in 2015, this amount grew to 252,331 pounds. Green Cares continues to provide food to approximately 800 individuals each month. While the majority of families come from the Monroe area, all communities in the county are served by Green Cares. Green Cares uses monetary donations to purchase food from Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin at a discounted rate, at times for $.18/pound. Currently, Green Cares is purchasing approximately 7,000 to 9,000 pounds of food each month at a cost between $4,000 and $7000. When certain foods are not available through Second Harvest, Green Cares purchases foods from area businesses at a discounted rate. Like 2014, the amount of purchased food by the pantry was less than amount donated during 2015. Without food donations from private and corporate entities, Green Cares could not provide the volume of food now being distributed. Green Cares is very unique for its size; there are no paid staff members. Southwestern Wisconsin Community Action Program (SWCAP) donates administrative costs and supervisory oversight to Green Cares. It is also impor-

tant to note that SWCAP does not and cannot fund the Green Cares Food Pantry. Green Cares volunteers must raise $80,000 each year to cover the costs of the pantry. Green Cares does receive United Way funding, which accounts for about 20% of the revenues needed to maintain pantry services. While the local economy is better than it was a few years ago, food insecurity issues remain in Green County. The University of Wisconsin-Madison Institute for Research of Poverty in April 2015 issued “Wisconsin Poverty Report: Poverty Rises in 2013 Despite Growth in Jobs.” The following is a quote from this report: “Despite an increase in employment in 2013, market-income poverty remained flat, and both official poverty and the WP.M. (Wisconsin Poverty Measure) poverty measures showed an increase in poverty. This increase is unexpected in a time of economic recovery, and suggests that the recovery remains fragile for low-income families. Some of the increase is driven by increases in elderly poverty, which may be sensitive to the inflation adjustments used in cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security and SSI benefits. “ During 2015, Green Cares experienced a substantial increase in elderly seeking assistance (22.50%)

and disabled individuals (21%). Collateral reports indicate ablebodied individuals are working, but the household income isn’t sufficient to put food on the table each day of the week. Thank you to the 139 individuals who volunteered 3,901 hours in 2015 to keep the pantry open.

Diabetes workshop complements treatment for a healthy life “I’ve always been independent. I’ve always had courage. But I didn’t always own my diabetes.”- Mary Tyler Moore In Wisconsin, there are 475,000 adults with diabetes and 1.45 million adults with pre-diabetes. For people who have type 2 diabetes, it is important to receive good medical care, but that is just half of the equation. Diabetes education is needed throughout your lifetime, not just at diagnosis. Learning to manage your diabetes from the start can help you have fewer health problems from diabetes later. Healthy Living with Diabetes, a program proven to help you manage your diabetes and complement existing treatments, teaches diabetesspecific self-management skills in nutrition, exercise, and medication. It also covers techniques to deal with symptoms of diabetes and working with your doctor to see better results. Stanford University developed this program to be different from appointments with a diabetes educator. In fact, it
is meant to work in conjunction with diabetes education concepts. Healthy Living with Diabetes is not an individualized program and does not consider any person’s individual health care needs. It is a group program for people diagnosed with pre-diabetes, diabetes, or persons whose loved ones have been diagnosed with diabetes. It is designed to help participants make life changes to reinforce the concepts they learn from diabetes education. All specific health care questions will be directed to the person’s health care team. Best of all, Healthy Living with Diabetes is a fun, educational workshop that will allow you to connect with others who are living with diabetes. This program will meet six times at the Monroe Clinic beginning Wednesday, August 10 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $10, and scholarships are available. Space is limited to 15 people. If you are interested in signing up, please call the Aging & Disability Resource Center at 608-328-9499.

Green County Sheriff’s Report All charges reported here are merely accusations. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Sheriff’s deputies reported the following incidents occurred. Sunday, July 10 OWI, damage, child abuse At 6:11 a.m., deputies and Monroe police conducted a traffic stop of Ethan D. Studer, 20, (driver) and Matthew D. Siegel, 18, (passenger) both of Monroe, in the 700 block of 30th Street in the City of Monroe. Studer and Siegel were suspects in two separate cases -- one for criminal damage to property in the city and one for battery/child abuse in the county. During the investigation, Siegel was arrested by Monroe police for a Department of Corrections Probation (violation) Warrant and Criminal Damage to Property. Studer was arrested for Operating while under the Influence (First Offense) and Operating with a Prohibited Alcohol Concentration (First Offense). Studer was also cited
for Unlawful U-turn midblock. Studer was released pending court. Deputies later arrested Siegel on a Child Abuse charge. Siegel was jailed pending court. Domestic abuse At 9:14 p.m., deputies responded to a residence in the North 6800 block of County Highway E for a disturbance. An investigation resulted in Trent W.D. Kuebli, 23, of Albany, being arrested for Domestic Abuse-Disorderly Conduct. Kuebli was booked into the jail pending bond or court. Monday, July 11 Domestic dispute At 2:16 a.m., deputies investigated a Domestic Dispute that occurred in the North 1500 Block of State Highway 69 in the Town of Monroe. An investigation resulted in the arrest of Ramiro Ramirez Vazquez, 26, of Monroe, on charge of Disorderly Conduct. Ramiro Ramirez Vazquez posted bond and was released. The incident remains under investigation with other charges pend-
ing against another subject. Warrant At 9:40 a.m., deputies arrested Ricky S. Coplien, 31, of Brodhead, at the Green County Justice Center on a Child Support Warrant. Coplien was jailed pending bond or court. Motor vehicle crash At 9:59 a.m., deputies and the Brodhead Fire Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on County Highway OK, west of County Highway F in the Town of Decatur. Nicholas K. Beahm, 18, of Appleton, was eastbound on County Highway OK at a high rate of speed when he entered a corner. The vehicle left the right side of the road and entered the gravel shoulder. Beahm attempted to correct the direction of travel, causing the vehicle to veer back onto the roadway and into the westbound lane of traffic. The operator overcorrected, causing the vehicle to again cross the eastbound lane of traffic and entered
the ditch on the south side of the highway. The vehicle collided with a power pole. The vehicle sustained moderate passenger-side damage and was towed from the scene. The airbags did not deploy in the crash. Beahm sustained injuries but refused medical treatment. Beahm was wearing his seatbelt and was cited for Failure to Maintain Control of the Vehicle. He was released pending court. Warrant At 6:54 p.m., deputies arrested Martha P Gonzalez Delgado, 44, of Brodhead, at a residence in the North 1300 block of Mount Hope Road on a Green County Warrant for Failure to Appear at Court for Operating without a License, Third Offense within Three Years. Town of Decatur. An investigation resulted in Bailey J. Stephan, 19, of Albany, being arrested for Battery. He was jailed pending bond or court. Tuesday, July 12 Warrant At 10:39 a.m., Jamie Charles Barreau, 34, of Monroe, was detained at the Green County Justice Center on a Child Support Warrant. Barreau posted bond and was released.
