Marengo Dance Troupe Places First in Worldwide Dance Contest By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent

Rio Ottolino developed a passion for dancing when she saw ‘The Nutcracker Suite’ at the age of 3. She has been competing since she was 9 years old and has won a number of competitions. At age 13, she looked at her mother and said, “I wanna teach.” “Last May, for her birthday, we moved everything out of the living room. We converted the entire front room for her dance studio,” Kris-

tin Ottolino, Rio’s mother, tells me. Last summer, at age 14, Rio took on five girls in each of three classes: ‘Minis’ ages 4-5 years old, ‘Petites’ ages 6-9 years old, and ‘Juniors’ of 10-12 years old. The girls come in for classes on Fridays for five weeks. They then hold a recital at Joe’s Place in Marengo. Rio provides their outfits for the recital which is attended by 70 people and she treats the girls to pizza afterwards. Following the recital, Rio recruited the older students: Samantha DiMaria, sisters Alyssa and Audrey

Schubert, and Alexis Mortimer and they formed the Goin’ Solo Dance Team. They learn a new dance, choreographed by Rio, record their video in the gym at St. John’s Lutheran Church and submit their video in the Fall, 2015 Starz Dance Competition which is a world-wide competition. The five girls dance to the song ‘Chandelier’ by Sia. They compete in the Rising Starz Division and receive a Platinum score with 1st place in their division. Rio also submitted an award-winning solo dance routine to ‘Cali-

fornia Dreamin’. Her choreography received 44 out of 45 points for a nearly perfect score. “It was so exciting,” Kristin Ottolino said. “I’m extremely proud of those girls. They did fantastic for their first time out. Rio had an absolute blast. She’s all about dance. She practices solo for an hour when she gets home from Marengo High School, then she does her homework. She is pulling all ‘A’s at school. She wants to do it again [teach] next summer. The team will be competing throughout the 2016 season.”

Celebrating January By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent

January tends to be a slow month for everyone, wedged as it is between the festivities of Christmas in December and Valentine’s Day and Fat Tuesday in February. However, if you research them, you can find reasons to celebrate each day of the month. We can all find the well-known New Year’s Day on January 1, Three Kings Day on January 6 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 18. But January 18 is also Peking Duck Day and Winnie the Pooh Day. If you are looking for reasons to celebrate in January, how about some of these? January 3 is Fruitcake Toss Day. You can do this alone or with friends. There is no one right way to toss fruitcake but if you have friends that also received fruitcake, see who can

throw it the farthest. Do not throw it at someone as the fruitcake could cause injury. Also, if you do not toss the fruitcake today, you must keep it until next Christmas. January 9 is National Take the Stairs Day. (Anyone who observed National Weigh-In Day on January 4 is probably already doing this.) January 17 is Ditch the New Year’s Resolutions Day which leads into January 19 and Rid the World of Fad Diets & Gimmicks Day. This is followed by Women’s Healthy Weight Day and National Granola Bar Day on January 21. Local Quilt Shop Day on January 23 is paired with January 24th’s Visit Your Local Quilt Shop Day. The 24th is also National Bible Sunday, National Compliment Day and Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day. How you mix and match your celebration of these events is up to you.

January 27 is National Chocolate Cake Day and the 28th is not only Blueberry Pancake Day [isn’t it a good thing that we observed Ditch the New Year’s Resolutions Day?], it is also National Kazoo Day. If you are thinking that these events are all very frivolous, then January 29 is the day for you. It is Curmudgeons Day. It is also National Corn Chip Day and National Fun at Work Day. Sci fi/Fantasy fans can appreciate January 2 which is National Science Fiction Day followed by January 3, J. R. R. Tolkein Day [author of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy].Alarmingly, January 16 is Appreciate a Dragon Day. On a more serious note, January is National Blood Donor Month. Also, National Pet Safety Day falls on January 2, War on Poverty Day is January 8 and Remember Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

comes on January 9. January 10 is Save the Eagles Day followed by January 11’s National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Religious Freedom Day is January 16 and World Religion Day on the 17th. National Sanctity of Human Life Day and Civil Rights Day are both on January 18. Holocaust Memorial Day comes on January 27 with the School Day of Non-Violence and Peace coming on January 30. Pick a day and there is more than one way to celebrate it in January. It might be serious, fun, frivolous or downright silly [I did not mention No Pants Subway Ride Day on January 10 or National Nothing Day on January 16] but there is far more to January than a few days that separate Christmas and Valentine’s Day. For more reasons to celebrate in January, visit www.holidayinsights. com or www.holidays-and-observances.com/january

Where to recycle Christmas Roof collapses on Harvard business trees in McHenry County By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

Now that Christmas has passed, many people are trying to dispose of their real Christmas trees. Instead of throwing the trees into the garbage, there are several options between now and February to dispose of them in a more nature-friendly manner. Many municipalities have opted to offer ‘recycling’ programs for the trees to be turned to mulch. No trees can be bagged or have tinsel or other décor of any kind on them at the time of drop off/pick up. Here are the options in the County by area/town. Not all cities are offering these programs at this time.

Algonquin- Waste Management will pick up trees from curbs until Jan 13. Trees must be 6ft or less (or cut to size) and will be chipped. No bags allowed. Crystal Lake- Drop off at Algonquin Township Road District at 3702 US Hwy 14 by Jan. 31 -Drop off at Nunda Township Road District at 3518 Bay Rd. 2nd Saturday of the month through March *open to Nunda township residents only* -Drop off at Dorr Township Road District at 12322 Davis Rd. (Woodstock) by Jan. 31 *open to Dorr township residents only* Harvard- Drop off at Rush Creek in twin oaks parking area at 20501 McGuire

Rd. by Jan. 17 *open to all McHenry County residents* McHenry- Curbside tree pick up runs until Jan. 15 Ringwood- Drop off at Glacial Park Harts Road parking lot, intersection of Route 31 and Hart by Jan. 15 Woodstock- Drop off at Dorr Township Road District at 12322 Davis Rd. (Woodstock) by Jan. 31 *open to Dorr township residents only* The mulch produced by these trees at McHenry County Conservation District locations (Ringwood, Harvard, and Algonquin Township- Crystal Lake) will be available for free at a later date.

Exceptionally heavy sleet and snow caused the roof of a building in Harvard to collapse on the evening of Mon. Dec 28. For the second time in eight years, one of the buildings housing the True Value Hardware’s Distribution Center’s roof collapsed due to the weight atop it. Fortunately there were no injuries. Over 10,000 square feet of the roof gave in during the collapse. The last time this happened was in March of 2007. That collapse ceased operation in that portion of the building for two business days. The section of the warehouse where the roof has been compromised will remain closed until repairs can be completed. As of Wednesday Dec 30. operations were still limited. The collapse was also assessed by the Harvard Fire Protection District to ensure proper limitations were put forth to ensure employees safety in the meantime. The constraints will limit production and capabilities

for an unknown amount of time. The building houses over a million square feet of warehouse space in total. Damage to product, if any, is unknown at this time. The extreme weight of the heavy snow is unusual based on the inch measurement of the snowfall. Located at 306 Division Street in the heart of Harvard, in a lot which is just south of where Division (AKA Route 14) intersections Route 173, the True Value building was in the center of an area that saw numerous temporary road closures due to inclement weather. Routes 14 and 173 both had partial closures at certain points Monday. Over 4 inches of dense snow fell on Monday, causing various accidents throughout the county and other weather related hazards. Fortunately the only damage in the True Value occurrence was to property. Others struggling with the snowfall and disasters were not so lucky. More snowfall continued to accumulate throughout the week which may slow down reopening of operations.

Attorney General Madigan: new year brings new laws Nursing home cameras; protections for sexual assault survivors, crime victims and workers effective Jan. 1 STATEWIDE — Attorney General Lisa Madigan highlighted new laws initiated by her office that went into effect Jan. 1. In 2016 Illinois will become the fourth state to explicitly allow electronic monitoring devices to be installed in resident rooms in nursing home facilities. House Bill 2462 sponsored by Rep. Greg Harris, D-Chicago, and Sen. Terry Link, D-Waukegan stemmed from complaints Madigan’s office received from nursing home residents and families who were concerned for their relatives’ care and safety. The new law allows residents of nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities or their family members to purchase and install video or audio monitoring devices in their rooms. “The new year will bring new peace of mind for nursing home residents and their families, because for the first time, they will have the option of installing recording devices to ensure their loved ones are receiving appropriate care,” Madigan said. Madigan noted that video and audio monitoring can be used as an added tool to help resolve disputes about suspected abuse or negligence. In addition, the video and audio monitoring allowed by this law can be helpful to nursing homes by alert-

ing them to employees who may be involved in abusive or unacceptable behavior, and allowing them to take disciplinary measures. After the General Assembly passed House Bill 2462 with overwhelming support, it was signed in August. The new law, which is Public Act 99-0430, will: Allow for audio and video electronic monitoring devices in resident rooms; Require resident and roommate consent; Make nursing home residents or their representatives responsible for the purchase, installation and maintenance expenses of the devices; Prohibit facility retaliation against residents for the use of the devices; Provide for recordings to be admissible into evidence in administrative, civil and criminal proceedings; and Provide misdemeanor and felony penalties for any person or entity that intentionally hampers, obstructs, tampers with, or destroys a recording or an electronic monitoring device. Attorney General Madigan highlighted additional laws that go into effect on Jan. 1: Cracking Down on Unlicensed Employment Agencies Senate Bill 1859 (Public Act 99-0422), sponsored by Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, and Rep. Cynthia Soto, D-Chicago, enables the state to take stronger action against employment agencies that operate without a license or violate the state’s Private Employment Agency Act. In November, Madigan filed lawsuits against three unlicensed Chica-

go employment agencies that targeted Latino workers for employment at Chinese buffet-style restaurants. Workers interviewed by Madigan’s office described long workdays, poor wages, high-pressure work environments, crowded and substandard housing conditions, verbal abuse, discrimination and threats of violence. The new law will enable the state to better track licensed employment agencies, impose stronger penalties for those that operate outside the law, penalize businesses that knowingly use unlicensed employment agencies, and offer greater protection for workplace whistleblowers. Protecting Victims of Crime Senate Bill 1866 (Public Act 99-0444), sponsored by Sen. Kimberly A. Lightford, D-Maywood, and Rep. Christian Mitchell, D-Chicago, requires vendors who provide hospital, medical, dental and counseling services to victims of violent crime to wait until the Court of Claims issues a final decision on a victim’s crime victims compensation claim before demanding payment or referring unpaid bills to a debt collection agency. The need for this new law stemmed from frequent instances in which vendors would take action to collect on a crime victim’s bill while payment from the state was still pending, which can be emotionally traumatizing for the victims, as well as harmful to his or her credit rating. The Office of the Attorney General, the Court of Claims and the Office of the Secretary of State jointly administer the Crime Victims Compensation Program (CVCP),

which provides eligible victims of violent crime with financial assistance for certain expenses connected to the crime that are incurred after insurance, Medicaid or other benefits have paid. After receiving an application, the Attorney General’s Office will provide written confirmation that a compensation claim has been filed, which the victim can provide to vendors. Protecting Survivors of Sexual Assault House Bill 3848 (Public Act 99-0454) brings Illinois into compliance with the federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which requires the state to certify that sexual assault survivors are not being billed for medical forensic examinations as a condition of receiving federal grant funds. Sponsored by Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, and Sen. Melinda Bush, D-Grayslake, the law prevents survivors of sexual assaults from being re-traumatized by expressly prohibiting hospitals, emergency room physicians and other providers of sexual assault services from charging the survivor or sending the survivor a bill. Hospitals must also provide a written notice to survivors when they are discharged, explaining that they may not be billed and providing information regarding who survivors should contact if they receive a bill. Under the new law, fines may be imposed on providers who bill or refer a survivor to a collection agency.

McHenry County News / January 7, 2016 - Page 7

The Internal Revenue Service reminds individuals and businesses making year-end gifts to charity that several important tax law provisions have taken effect in recent years. Some of the changes taxpayers should keep in mind include: Rules for charitable contributions of clothing, household items Household items include furniture, furnishings, electronics, appliances and linens. Clothing and household items donated to charity generally must be in good used condition or better to be tax-deductible. A clothing or household item for which a taxpayer claims a deduction of over $500 does not have to meet this standard if the taxpayer includes a qualified appraisal of the item with the return. Donors must get a written acknowledgement from the charity for all gifts worth $250 or more. It must include, among other things, a description of the items contributed. Guidelines for monetary donations A taxpayer must have a bank record or a written statement from the charity in order to deduct any donation of money, regardless of amount. The record must show the name of the charity and the date and amount of the contribution. Bank records include canceled checks, and bank, credit union and credit card statements. Bank or credit union statements should show the name of the charity, the date, and the amount paid. Credit card statements should show the name of the charity, the date, and the transaction posting date. Donations of money include those made in cash or by check, electronic funds transfer, credit card and payroll deduction. For payroll deductions, the taxpayer should retain a pay stub, a Form W-2 wage statement or other document furnished by the employer showing the total amount withheld for charity, along with the pledge card showing the name of the charity. These requirements for the deduction of monetary donations do not change the long-standing requirement that a taxpayer obtain an acknowledgment from a charity for each deductible donation (either money or property) of $250 or more. However, one statement containing all of the required information may meet both requirements. Reminders The IRS offers the following additional reminders to help taxpayers plan their holiday and year-end gifts to charity:

Qualified charities Check that the charity is eligible. Only donations to eligible organizations are tax-deductible. Select Check, a searchable online tool available on IRS.gov, lists most organizations that are eligible to receive deductible contributions. In addition, churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and government agencies are eligible to receive deductible donations. That is true even if they are not listed in the tool’s database. Year-end gifts Contributions are deductible in the year made. Thus, donations charged to a credit card before the end of 2015 count for 2015, even if the credit card bill isn’t paid until 2016. Also, checks count for 2015 as long as they are mailed in 2015. Itemize deductions For individuals, only taxpayers who itemize their deductions on Form 1040 Schedule A can claim deductions for charitable contributions. This deduction is not available to individuals who choose the standard deduction. This includes anyone who files a short form (Form 1040A or 1040EZ). A taxpayer will have a tax savings only if the total itemized deductions (mortgage interest, charitable contributions, state and local taxes, etc.) exceed the standard deduction. Use the 2015 Form 1040 Schedule A to determine whether itemizing is better than claiming the standard deduction. Record donations For all donations of property, including clothing and household items, get from the charity, if possible, a receipt that includes the name of the charity, date of the contribution, and a reasonably-detailed description of the donated property. If a donation is left at a charity’s unattended drop site, keep a written record of the donation that includes this information, as well as the fair market value of the property at the time of the donation and the method used to determine that value. Additional rules apply for a contribution of $250 or more. Special rules The deduction for a car, boat or airplane donated to charity is usually limited to the gross proceeds from its sale. This rule applies if the claimed value is more than $500. Form 1098-C or a similar statement, must be provided to the donor by the organization and attached to the donor’s tax return. If the amount of a taxpayer’s deduction for all noncash contributions is over $500, a properly-completed Form 8283 must be submitted with the tax return.

New year resolutions are so last century

W

e made ‘em, broke ‘em and forgot ‘em in less than a month. Ditch the “lose ten pounds” or “save more money” or “marry George Clooney” statements. George is off the market. Losing weight or saving money or finding love are steppingstones to a greater goal. What is it that you really want? You want to feel fit, healthy, confident and secure in your body or in your finances or in your relationships. What you truly want deep down is peace, love, contentment, happiness, joy, confidence, security. What will get you there? Making the right choices. Choose a word that resonates with you and what you want. If you are focusing on your weight and health, choose a word like FIT or ACTIVE or HEALTHY or VIBRANT or LIGHT or ALIVE or whatever rings your bell. That word is your guidepost for making decisions throughout the year. When faced with the buffet, don’t berate yourself by saying “I promised myself I would

lose ten pounds this year, but dang I want that molten lava cake. Oh well, maybe next year.” Hang on to a word like VIBRANT. As you pile items on your plate, you let that word bounce around your head. Does this choice make me feel more vibrant? As you select your menu every day, you can ask yourself if three donuts and a large Dr. Pepper make you feel vibrant. If so, fine, partake and enjoy. No guilt. If you feel donuts today don’t feel like a good choice, choose something else that feels like it is part of a vibrant lifestyle. It’s not about a static plan of losing ten pounds, it’s a grander plan of having a life that is vibrant. It’s

always about how you want to feel. Each day tell yourself, “I will make choices today that support my vibrant life.” Your word is to be used as a course corrector, not a stick to beat yourself with. No shame, no judgment. This is your word, you pick it, you own it! It’s a word that feels good and helps you on your path to what you want deep down. I have used various words since I started doing this new way of doing resolutions. I’ve used JOY and TRUST more than once. With every choice, I asked: Does this bring me joy? For Trust, I held on to that word as I grew deeper and deeper being able to trust myself, and my decisions. I trust that I know what is best for me and I trust that if I act accordingly, it will work out for my greater good. My hubby has used words like PLAY and AWARENESS. This year he chose GLEEFULLY. I chose LOVE. In all things, my guide is to just be love. Easier said than done.

A mom’s talents run deep

M

y talents never cease to amaze me. Multi-talents, actually; I am multi-talented and living in a household where my elaborate skills are acknowledged and revered. Well, maybe not revered, but they are used on a daily basis. There are certain things – many things – at which I excel. I am so good at so many things that virtually no one but me is able to do them. Lots of them have to do with the fact that I have super X-ray vision. I can see practically invisible items that no one else can. My acute sense of eyesight enables me to see crumpled paper, crayons, Hot Wheels and Legos from five feet away, which is the approximate distance from my eyes to the floor. The non-adults in my family can’t see across this vast expanse, even though most of them have eyes that are much less than five feet from the floor. My finely tuned eyesight can also make out dog hair on the carpet, food splatter in the microwave and (ahem) droplets on the toilet. My world is a fuller, more colorful place because of my tremendous eyes. I wonder what the world looks like to normal people? I’ve also been blessed with supersonic hearing. My ears are nearly bionic. They can detect sounds – like a running toilet, dripping faucet, breaking glass or wrestling in the living room – that

are lost to average human ears. The kids living with me (my offspring) were apparently born with normal ears, because they couldn’t recognize a running toilet if they were seated atop it. Sophisticated spatial talents – I’ve got those, too. They come in quite handy. I feel great sympathy for the people who weren’t born with groovy spatial talents like mine. These poor souls aren’t able to load and unload the dishwasher, fold clothes or even line up the 18 pairs of shoes and boots scattered by the back door. These tasks are far beyond the capabilities of people with everyday skills. It takes someone with a fair amount of genius to load the dishwasher. As incredible as this all may seem, my list goes on. I was born with the empty gene. I possess the amazing and astounding ability to discern whether something is full, or empty. Take a box of cookies. Most of the young people in my house know how to open the box and eat the cookies, but they are unable to determine when the box is empty. They simply take the last cookie, and leave the box on the shelf in the pantry. It takes years of practice to be able to lift an empty cookie box and know, without a doubt, that all the cookies are gone and it is time to toss said box in the garbage. I am lucky my kids have allowed me the opportunity for so much practice. As far as talents go, mine

Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE

run deeper than the pile of Legos on my living room floor. For instance, I possess instantaneous laundry finesse; this enables me to assess a discarded item of clothing and immediately know whether it belongs in the closet or laundry pile (but never, ever on the floor). I can exchange an empty roll of toilet paper for a full one with just two hands. Pairing mittens – not to mention socks -- is practically my forte, and not only I am able to identify when a toilet needs flushing, but I can complete the task with one flick of the wrist. You might find it hard to believe that I possess skills that surpass the dreams of regular people, like my kids. Bless them. They take my talents in stride and treat me like my gifts are completely normal. Even a super-human, super-mom wants to feel normal a couple of times a week. I am lucky -- they are so good to me. What more could I possibly want? Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Don’t miss a slice; follow the Slices of Life page on Facebook. This is a rerun of a column originally published in 2008.

But the more I dwell in the energy of love, the more energy it generates in crazy ways. I love my new vacuum cleaner. Seriously. I love our home. No secret there. I love my gray hair (a year ago letting it go natural was a big choice and I TRUSTED.) I love my work and my clients and every project. I love what we have planned for 2016 and I love the open spaces on the calendar for serendipities. Oh that’s another good word! To be on the lookout for serendipities always creates more. Maybe I’ll have two words this year! You get the idea. The word is a focus tool to help you stay on the path of achieving what it is you really want. If you

want more money, pick a word like RICH or WEALTHY or ABUNDANT or SAVVY. With every choice, ask if this is what a savvy spender would do. If not, wallet stays firmly closed. You will save more money because you choose to live like a rich, wealthy, abundant, savvy person. Hop on over to my blog at kellyepperson.com and share what your word is or write me at info@kellyepperson.com. I would LOVE to hear from you! Richard Sherman, “Most of the farm shows today are sold out as farmers are seeing how well farm shows work in conjunction with their internet research, and companies realize that they have to be out talking directly to the farmer. All of our exhibit space is filled, and we do have a fairly long waiting list. In addition to the new companies discussed above, large spaces will be taken by many show regulars who are displaying their newest products.” Among these are O’Connell farm drainage plows, Z&J farms, Rexco, Case IH, Kunau implement, Brokaw, Birkey’s, Iowa farm equipment, River Valley turf with John Deere, AGCO, Salford, Yarger, Wingfield, Fertilizer dealer, Correct truck, Vermeer, Calmer cornheads, Martin equipment and Vern’s. Show admission and parking are all free and the show hours are Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closing day, Tuesday, Jan. 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The QCCA expo center is located at 2621 Fourth Ave. in Rock Island, and it is easiest to take 5th Ave. and then turn left at 26th St. on to the 4th Ave. at the Expo Center parking lot. Franks urges special session, around-the-clock effort to address budget crisis State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, issued the following statement Wednesday, urging Gov. Bruce Rauner to call legislators to Springfield to work around the clock to address the state’s budget crisis: “With the dawn of the new year, Illinois will have gone more than six months without addressing the unprecedented fiscal and political crises we face. Every day, court orders require state agencies to spend money that we do not have and our public pension systems continue to operate without desperately needed reforms, adding to our already unsustainably high mountain of debt. “Taxpayers cannot afford to have Illinois’ leaders continue to pay lip-service to this crisis, acknowledging the damaging effects of excessive borrowing and the personal tragedies that

result from service disruptions, but then act as if petty bickering is the best we can do. The leaders of any corporation facing a similar set of circumstances would be working around the clock to find solutions, but unfortunately, this is not the case for Illinois. “The crisis that we are in demands leadership from all 177 members of the General Assembly and from the chief executive of the state. Unfortunately, right now, we don’t even know where the governor is. I, however, know where we need to be. “The governor should call legislators back into session immediately and be prepared to keep us in Springfield until the job is done. Each of us was elected to serve the people of this great state, not play politics on taxpayers’ time and money. Enough is enough.”

Create a financial calendar for the new year By Nathaniel Sillin

When was the last time you made a financial resolution on New Year’s Eve? If you can’t remember, you’re in good company. The Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America’s annual New Year’s resolutions survey (https://www.allianzlife. com/about/news-and-events for 2014 reported that 49 percent of respondents said that health and wellness were their first priorities for the coming year, up from 43 percent in 2013. Only 30 percent ranked financial stability as their top goal for the year. In 2016, maybe it’s time to push financial fitness to the top of your list by creating an annu-

al financial calendar that helps you save, spend and invest a little smarter. Here are some suggestions to build your calendar: Set three important money goals for the year. Three money goals may not sound like a lot, but if you’ve never thought about money goals before, establishing these targets can make a major difference in your financial life. Set goals that address key money concerns or serve as a springboard for a solid financial future. Choose what makes sense for you, but here are three basic goals to start with: Create or reset your budget. If you’ve never made a budget before, spend a month or two tracking everything you spend. Review your findings closely

and see whether you’re spending less than you earn. If not, determine if you can cut spending to direct more funds to meet key goals. If you already have a budget, consider reevaluating your finances to see where you could cut costs. Build an emergency fund. An emergency fund (http:// www.practicalmoneyskills. com/emergencyfund) contains between three to six months of living expenses you can draw upon only in a real financial emergency such as unemployment, illness or a major unplanned expense. Save for something special. Make one of your three goals a fun goal – a vacation, a new bike, a wardrobe upgrade – something that feels like a reward. Here are calendar items that might help you reach those goals. Make sure you note staggered receipt dates for each of your three free credit reports (https:// www.annualcreditreport.com) from Experian, TransUnion and Equifax so you can keep a steady eye on your credit and spot irregularities if they hap-

pen. Prevent severe money surprises by marking key repair or replacement dates on home, appliance and other personal expenses that might be coming up in the future. Use the time you have now to schedule inspections and estimates for each so you’ll be able to start setting aside funds in advance. Retirement readiness is another key calendar item. At least once a year, consider reviewing your holdings in retirement or investment accounts to make sure they’re still performing as you’ve planned or if not, whether you need to restructure the investments in your portfolio. Put the open enrollment dates for employer- or self-employment benefits on your calendar and then mark a date several weeks before to allow you to start thinking through necessary changes. The way you choose employer or self-employment benefits is a key part of your financial planning and should intersect with other independent money decisions you’re making for yourself and your family. Insurance renewal dates are important to mark as well. If

you’re not comparison-shopping for the auto, homeowners or health insurance coverage you buy on your own, there’s a good possibility you’re losing out on money, service or coverage. Set two dates each year to review your overall finances. You might consider dates in June and November to see how you’re doing with budget, savings, spending, investment and tax issues. The June date is for corrective actions; the November date is to determine the lastminute spending, savings or tax moves you want to make before December 31 and to set financial goals for the New Year. If you work with a qualified financial or tax expert, consider involving him or her in the conversation. Bottom line: If you use a calendar or datebook to keep on schedule, add important money dates and activities so you can meet your lifetime financial goals.
